2023 Research Methods e-Festival
The 2023 Research Methods e-Festival took place between 7 and 9 November 2023. The online NCRM event was organised as a celebration of research methods with an interdisciplinary focus.
Our programme included 100 sessions in a variety of immersive formats. These ranged from "what is" and "how to" talks, to more research-focused webinars, expert panels doing deep dives into particular topics and workshops.
The event was the 10th edition of the Research Methods Festival, which takes place every two years. It will be the second edition to be run online, with the first e-festival held in 2021 . NCRM has run the Research Methods Festival since the third edition in 2008.

Keynote: Evidencing Impact
The keynote session at the festival focused on evidencing research impact. Professor Mark Reed discussed easy-to-use tools that enable researchers to monitor, evaluate and evidence the impact of their work.
The talk took place at 12:30 on Tuesday, 7 November. It was free to attend, open to researchers in all disciplines and sectors and did not require registration to the full three-day event.
The session concluded with an announcement of the winners of the NCRM Impact Prize. Find out more .
Video poster competition winner
As part of the 2023 Research Methods e-Festival, we showcased video posters from current postgraduate researchers. The video posters were broadcast during the e-festival and attendees of the event voted for their favourite, with a prize being awarded to the most popular.
The winner was Joanna Grace, whose video was titled Towards a Methodology for Doing Research with People with Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities. Read more and watch Joanna's video .
Ten finalists were selected from a longlist of almost 50 applications. They were invited to create three-minute video posters, which were all featured at the online festival.
The shortlisted candidates were: Bethan Pell; Courtney Franklin; Elena C. Altmann; Emily MacLeod; Jennie Lister; John Parkin; Marifatul Amalia; Paul Vanags; Suse Gibson.
Event details
Festival passes were available for a flat fee of £10, which gave attendees a choice of all the festival's 100 main sessions.
We ran a series of workshops alongside the festival that require separate registration. The workshops were two-hour intensives that were limited to a maximum of 30 participants and charged at £2.50 per session.
The e-festival was be held on the interactive online platform Whova . The platform enables users to create an online profile, pick the sessions they would like to attend, watch videos in our poster competition and network with other attendees.

Machine learning for international business research.
Masterclass Leads: Thomas Lindner (University of Innsbruck), Laurenz Tinhof (Vienna University of Economics and Business)
Time and Date: 5 July, 10am-1pm CET
In this workshop, we cover the conceptual foundations of machine learning (ML), and how ML complements the battery of empirical methodologies usually applied in IB research. After having established the conceptual basics, we will proceed to implementing simple ML methodologies in the script language R, using recent machine learning packages. In the last part of the workshop, we will introduce workshop participants to an ML architecture we developed for predicting subsidiary profits abroad, and participants will be able to edit and improve the ML architecture in a case study of using ML for IB research. We will close with Q&A about applications in current research projects and teaching.
Surviving the Review Process: Behind the Scenes of Submitting Qualitative Papers to IB Journals
Masterclass Lead: Rebecca Piekkari (Aalto University School of Business)
In this workshop we will cover the issues involved in publishing qualitative research in IB journals. Professor Rebecca Piekkari, an Area Editor of Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), will discuss the process with editors and author teams of papers that have recently been published in JIBS and JWB. Workshop participants will get a behind-the-scenes understanding of the key challenges that the authors faced, lessons they learned, and the key turning points and insights they obtained during the review process. Participants will also hear advice from editors about how authors can maximize the chances of their papers making it through the review process. The workshop will provide opportunities for workshop participants to pose questions of the presenters and reflect on the workshop content.

Drawing on my experience of more than 25 years as an anthropologist of business and organisations, we will begin with a discussion of what makes a study “ethnographic”, and about how ethnography in business draws on, and develops, work done in more traditional settings. We will consider various theoretical and practical traditions in ethnography and their relevance to business and management. We will then engage in various practical exercises aimed at developing participants’ skills as ethnographers and at instilling an “ethnographic mentality” for use in fieldwork.
Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and the Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) in IB Research

This workshop introduces and encourages the combined use of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and the necessary condition analysis (NCA) that enables researchers to explore and validate hypotheses following a sufficiency logic, as well as hypotheses drawing on a necessity logic.
PLS-SEM belongs to a family of regression-based methods for estimating models with latent variables developed by the Swedish econometrician Herman Wold (1985). Since the 2000s, PLS-SEM has gained widespread popularity in a variety of disciplines among them (international) marketing and management research. The method estimates theoretically established causal-predictive relationships between latent variables (i.e. constructs measured by observed indicators). The results can empirically substantiate the determinants (X) that lead to an outcome (Y). Authors who interpret their PLS-SEM findings often use expressions such as “X increases Y” or “a higher X leads to a higher Y”. The interpretation, therewith, follows a sufficiency logic. Understanding relationships in terms of sufficiency logic is extremely relevant. Researchers, for instance, aim to understand the factors that lead to a stronger intention to use certain technology by applying different theories of technology acceptance; or they aim to understand the factors that contribute to a higher loyalty of their customers.
In contrast, the NCA is a relatively novel research methodology that has attracted much attention in the academic community in recent years. The NCA follows a necessity logic (“X is necessary for Y”) and can identify necessary conditions in data sets. A necessary condition is a critical factor for an outcome: if the necessary cause is not in place the outcome will not materialize. Hence, the necessary condition can be a bottleneck, critical factor, constraint, disqualifier, etc. The right level of a necessary condition must be put and kept in place to avoid guaranteed failure. By adding a different logic and data analysis approach, an NCA adds both rigor and relevance to theory, data analysis, and publications.
Against this background, with a combined use of PLS-SEM and NCA, we can determine the factors that produce the best possible outcome (i.e. the should-have factors; sufficiency logic) and those that are critical for an outcome (i.e. the must-have factors; necessity logic). Importantly, the should-have factors can only increase an outcome after the must-have factors have been taken care of. If necessary conditions are ignored or neglected in a field where we theoretically assume they exist, the result will be incomplete findings and recommendations. PLS-SEM is an approach to identify the determinants that can increase an outcome. NCA identifies the necessary level of a determinant that is needed to enable the outcome (Richter et al., 2020).
In this workshop, we will, therefore, introduce sufficiency and necessity logic as well as the foundations of a combined PLS-SEM and NCA use. For a case study illustration we use the SmartPLS 4 software. We provide insights into the logic, assessment, challenges and benefits of a combined use of PLS-SEM and NCA.

Since its founding more than twenty years ago, the Institute for Qualitative and Multi-Method Research has welcomed more than three thousand graduate students and junior faculty.
Participants in IQMR are either nominated by their home school or department or selected from an "open pool" (largely funded by the National Science Foundation, with additional support from the American Political Science Association).

How to participate
There are four separate open pool competitions to attend IQMR 2024: the general open pool; applications from researchers at African scholarly institutions; applications from researchers at Latin American scholarly institutions; and applications from scholars based in the Arab MENA region. You can find links to the separate application forms in the table below.
Scholars admitted through the general track will have their participation at IQMR covered, receive a stipend to contribute towards cost of meals, as well as shared-accommodation for the duration of the program. General track attendees will be responsible for their own transportation costs to and from Syracuse University. Scholars admitted through the African, Latin American and MENA tracks will have participation at IQMR covered, meals, and shared-accommodation for the duration of the program, as well as roundtrip economy-class airfare.
Distinct from the open pool process, IQMR also accepts attendees who are nominated to attend by their home unit (center/department/school) using their own selection procedures. The participation fee varies depending on the number of people being nominated. For 2024, the participation fee per nominee is $1670 if one, $1640 if two, $1620 if three, $1600 if four, and $1580 if five. New Voices Initiative
IQMR’s New Voices Initiative aims to identify, encourage and support early career researchers (ECRs) who are interested in teaching at IQMR. Our hope is that each fall several ECRs will be selected through a transparent, competitive process, and will join the teaching team for particular module sequences during the following summer’s institute. Seasoned instructors will guide and mentor ECRs who are selected, and will learn from and draw on their fresh insights and perspectives about the methods being taught. The initiative’s broader goals are to grow the number and diversity of faculty who teach qualitative and multi-method research in the social sciences. As part of the New Voices Initiative, three ECRs were selected as teaching fellows at IQMR 2023.

Gabreélla (Ella) Friday
Gabreélla (Ella) Friday is a postdoctoral researcher dually appointed in the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Brown University. Her areas of specialization include mass incarceration, women, gender and sexuality studies, time and social theory, and social movements. She worked as a prisoner’s rights advocate, community organizer, and researcher for her forthcoming book project, Weaponizing and Resisting Time. Here, she explores incarcerated women’s relationship to and resistance of time in a rural upstate New York jail where she conducted four-years of ethnographic advocacy. Friday received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Binghamton University in 2022.
Rachel Schwartz
Rachel Schwartz is an Assistant Professor of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Her research focuses on civil war and its legacies, statebuilding, corruption, and human rights in Central America, as well as qualitative methods. Her book Undermining the State from Within: The Institutional Legacies of Civil War in Central America was published by Cambridge University Press in early 2023. Her research has been supported by the Fulbright Program and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), and her work has been published in scholarly journals like the Journal of Peace Research , Journal of Global Security Studies , Latin American Politics & Society , Revista de Ciencia Política, Small Wars and Insurgencies , and Studies in Comparative International Development . During the 2019-2020 academic year, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research (CIPR) at Tulane University. Schwartz received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019.
Please note that while we are hopeful that participants in IQMR 2024 will be able to gather in Syracuse next summer, we realize that this will ultimately be dictated by health circumstances. If we are unable to hold an in-person institute, IQMR 2024 will take place online. We will offer details regarding specific arrangements early next year once we have further information on the progression of the COVID pandemic, and faculty and student needs.
The Workshop on Quantitative Research Methods in Education, Health, and Social Sciences (QMEHSS) serves as an important venue on the University of Chicago campus for building an intellectual community of colleagues who share methodological interests. Workshop participants meet biweekly to discuss working papers and brainstorm solutions to methodological problems encountered in ongoing research. Participants have included faculty members, researchers, and students from the Social Sciences Division, Health Studies, Statistics, Public Policy, the National Opinion Research Center, the Consortium for Chicago School Research, and colleagues from the University of Illinois in Chicago. In addition, we have invited speakers from other major universities to share with us their latest work.
A pre-workshop session is designed to prepare students for active participation in intellectual discourse in the workshop. The pre-workshop sessions will be held in a hybrid format this year (2024-2025) before each workshop session, and will be scheduled at the beginning of each quarter based on MAPSS QMSA students’ schedules. What Does a TCRM Paper Session Look Like?
TCRM sessions are unique from other NCFR sessions. Authors submit their papers before the meetings and leaders in the field serve as discussants, providing detailed reviews of papers, again before the meetings. Authors’ papers and extended abstracts are made available prior to TCRM so that attendees can provide their own feedback on each paper during the session. In the past, we have had presenters summarize their papers at the beginning of the session. This year, authors will not describe their papers during the TCRM session. Instead, we are asking authors to provide an extended abstract to participants to read before the TCRM session, if they cannot read the entire paper. This process will allow us to get to the discussion quicker. The extended abstract should be about 1000 words and represent what authors would have presented at the beginning of a session in previous years. Sessions will include discussant comments, author responses, and audience feedback. The goal of these sessions is to provide deep intellectual conversation and substantive feedback to authors.

The deadline for TCRM submissions was March 15, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. PST.
Authors of accepted papers will be required to submit a full version of their paper, up to 35 pages (all inclusive) and extended abstracts (1,000 words), by August 16th, 2023 , and discussant reviews due by October 6th, 2023 .

2023 Workshops
The Penn State Workshops in Research Methods for Applied Linguists started in 2020 as a means to support researchers in designing, carrying out, and reporting research studies. Not only are research methods at the heart of any piece of research that we do, but the ways in which we design and use our research tools can have important consequences for the nature of a study’s findings and conclusions. In addition to these understandings, open science initiatives are encouraging us to be more transparent in how we plan, conduct, and share our research (e.g., sharing data collection materials, pre-registering analyses before data collection). In order to support researchers in carrying out high-quality applied linguistics research, our aims for these workshops has always been to provide free and accessible training in a variety of research methods used in the field, including considerations for research design, data collection, data analysis, reporting, interpretation, and publishing. Our workshops involve all stages of the research process and are led by international experts. In fall 2023, we are pleased to offer the following workshops:

Workshop on Quantitative Research Methods 2023
Lokniti-Programme for Comparative Democracy, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Delhi, invites applications for the summer ‘Workshop on Quantitative Research Methods ’, geared to train students of Indian politics, to be held in Bengaluru between second and third week of June 2023.
This is the 15th Summer School being organized by Lokniti-CSDS. Some of the leading scholars working on empirical methods in Political Science have been involved in designing this summer school. In this Summer School, there will be special emphasis on understanding of quantitative data on Indian politics. We plan to bring together a group of political scientists with the aim of providing them an opportunity to improve their skills in quantitative analysis. The selected participants will be given a set of readings before they come to attend the workshop and will be expected to attend lectures and practical data analysis sessions.
We invite the following categories of candidates to apply for this workshop (preference will be given to young researchers):
a). Teachers of Political Science in colleges and universities who are working on empirical subjects and would benefit from further training.
b). Research students of Political Science who are working on empirical themes for their M. Phil. or Ph. D. dissertations and can benefit from further training.
c). Any other person (including those from outside Political Science and outside academia) who are interested in making sense of politics by analyzing quantitative data.
Please send your detailed CV with a statement of research interest (those already registered for M. Phil or PhD should clearly mention the topic of their dissertation along with a brief summary of the objectives and methodologies used) in about 500 words. Applicants should also go through the questionnaire used for the National Election Study 2019. The questionnaire can be accessed here . Participants are expected to submit a 500 words Note on a research question that interests them based on this questionnaire. Selection for the workshop will be made on the basis of these two write-ups submitted by candidates besides their CVs. The last date for receiving the applications closed on 17th April 2023.
Please note that this is a full time residential training course and candidates admitted to the workshop are expected to stay at the Institute and engage in full time work on all days during this period.
Participants need to bear their travel expenses from their place of residence to Bengaluru and back. The exact dates of the Summer School will be announced later. The host institution will take care of the accommodation and food for all the participants for the entire duration of the workshop.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The workshop is primarily aimed at Doctoral Students – who are actively pursuing research. Considering that the candidates might be at different stages of their respective research work, the stipulated 30 sessions across 10 days have been bifurcated into two weeks. The first week shall serve as orientation to the different facets and fundamentals of research
methodology. The second week shall provide a hands-on experience to statistical tools such as Factor Analysis, Structural Equation Modelling, Panel Data and Time Series Analysis, Cluster and Discriminant Analysis, etc. using STATA, SPSS and R. e-library resources and Paper Clinics are opportunities where the participants can enhance the quality of their working papers and know about the opportunities for publishing. The participants shall be provided an exposure to field study at JHARCRAFT (Jharkhand Silk Textile & Handicraft Development Corporation Ltd.) manufacturing centre, near Ranchi. Where they will observe and interact with artisans and understand how this organization is contributing to their livelihoods.

Sessions in the workshop will be taken by faculties from institutions like IIM, IIT, NIT and other Central Universities.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Research scholars currently pursuing their M.Phil./Ph.D./PDF in social science (Commerce, Management, Economics etc.) disciplines from recognized Universities/Institutes across India are eligible to apply.
A maximum of 30 participants shall be shortlisted (10 from local, 10 from within the state and 10 from rest of India).

- The selection for the course will be made as per ICSSR guidelines.
- No leave of any kind is permissible during the course period.
- Selected participants will have to bring their laptops.

There is NO registration fee for the selected participants.
ACCOMMODATION & TRAVEL ALLOWANCE:
Accommodation arrangements shall be made for outstation participants. Travel costs of participants shall be reimbursed only for second class/sleeper class/bus fare (through the shortest route & up to a maximum extent of Rs. 1000) on the production of original tickets.

1. Introduction
State of the art on positive energy districts, 2. methodology.
- Setting: a café-like environment with small, round tables, tablecloths, colored pens, sticky notes and any interaction tool available.
- Welcome and Introduction: the host offers a welcome, introduces the World Café process, and sets the context.
- Small-Group Rounds: three or more twenty-minute rounds of conversations occur in small groups. Participants switch tables after each round, with one person optionally remaining as the “table host” to brief newcomers.
- Questions: each round starts with a context-specific question. Questions may remain constant or be built upon each other to guide the discussion.
- Harvest: participants share their discussion insights with the larger group, often visually represented through graphic recording.
- Objectives of the workshop and preparation. The first step of the World Café approach is to identify the main objectives. For this workshop, there was the need to investigate the current landscape of PED research, as well as to have a benchmark and collect feedback on the current research activities within Annex 83. Questions were structured in order to frame the current state-of-the-art understanding of the topic. A mapping of the potential different stakeholders in the PED design and implementation process was carried out at this stage. As a result, municipalities, community representatives, energy contractors, real estate companies and commercial facilitators, as well as citizens, were identified as main target groups. Later, the follow-up discussions were built around these main actors. Further, the mapping of the stakeholders’ involvement was carried out for better understanding the complexity of relationships, roles and synergies as well as the impact on the design, implementation and operation stages of PEDs.
