Writing your cover letter is like tailoring your sales pitch to a store’s target audience. If you’re wondering how to identify company needs, the job description will provide the necessary information.

While analyzing each job description , look for job skills the company emphasizes, like customer service or product presentations. Then, customize what you write in your cover letter accordingly, such as explaining how you use product presentations to boost sales by 38%.

Retail sales associate cover letter introduction

Just like learning a customer’s name is helpful while learning about their needs in the sales process, it’s also a good way to connect with the hiring manager reviewing your cover letter. You can often find a contact person in the job description or on the company’s website, so always greet a specific person when possible.

Connecting your top retail sales skills to the company’s mission is also essential. For example, you could write about how you’re eager to use your merchandising skills to create effective displays that enhance the shopping experience.

The intro below doesn’t make the right impact since the applicant doesn’t get into enough detail about how they’ll impact the retail sales environment or greet a hiring manager by name.

We’re lacking important details here!

I’m eager to be applying to your retail sales associate job opening. This looks like a fulfilling company to work for, and I think I’ll be a great addition to your team.

The opener below does a better job showcasing specific skills like troubleshooting and app installation that will make the applicant a great sales associate while aligning with Verizon’s mission to make a global impact.

A great intro connecting with company needs!

Dear Ms. Wright,

Embracing Verizon’s motto, “Built Right,” and understanding the power of communication, I’m thrilled to apply for the cell phone retail sales associate position at Verizon Wireless. My diverse skill set in network understanding, app installation and troubleshooting, and mobile device repairs aligns perfectly with this role. I’m excited about the opportunity to advance Verizon’s global impact.

Retail sales associate cover letter body

While performing product presentations, you know it’s essential to present specific details about how it’ll enhance the customer’s life to make the sale. The body of your cover letter works similarly.

Ideally, you’ll want to present some previous work achievements in this section that show your impact on the job. For example, how you use a consultative selling approach to identify customer needs and provide 54% more effective product recommendations.

Using relevant sales metrics is a great idea in this section, such as revenue generated or customer retention.

A top-notch body paragraph with relevant retail sales skills!

I profoundly enriched my skills in upselling and cross-selling at Dollar General. Aided by a keen understanding of our product range and customer preferences, I stimulated sales growth by an estimated 18%. I also utilized point-of-sale (POS) systems to facilitate seamless transactions and log customer buying habits for future reference.

writing a cover letter for retail sales position

Retail sales associate cover letter closing

You’re probably pretty familiar with closing sales on the job. Many of those same principles can be applied to your cover letter, such as using a call to action and thanking the hiring manager for their time.

Rephrasing your connection to the store’s mission and how your job skills fit in is also essential. For example, you could write about how you’re eager to work for a customer-focused company and are ready to use your solution-selling skills to achieve company sales goals.

The example below is too bland since it doesn’t capture the applicant’s specific retail sales skills or how they connect to the company’s mission.

A bit too bland!

Thank you for considering me for your retail sales associate position. I’m eager to use my sales skills to facilitate success as a part of your team. I look forward to discussing this position with you further.

Aaron Arnette

The closer below does a better job of showcasing the sales and people skills that will help the applicant succeed as a retail sales associate at Walmart.

A great closer connected to company needs!

My experiences have nurtured my versatility, adaptability, and people skills, which are vital for a vibrant retailer like Walmart. I’m excited about fostering engaging shopping experiences and bolstering sales growth as a retail sales associate. I can’t wait to discuss how my skills and experience can contribute to the Walmart Jacksonville team. Thank you.

Retail sales associates need many skills, from customer service to cross-selling, so listing all your skills would make it too long. Instead, try to focus on three to five that are highly relevant to company needs, such as product presentations and tech troubleshooting for a cell phone retailer.

Many previous work experiences can translate to show you’ll make a great retail sales associate. For example, you could write about how you generated donations at local events while volunteering with a nonprofit for disabled veterans. Or explain how you’ve studied diligently and planned your schedule to maintain a 3.94 GPA in school.

Even if some retail sales associate job posts have the cover letter listed as optional, you should still submit one with your application. It’ll help you stand out by showing your connection to the company’s mission and how your knowledge of loyalty programs and upselling will help you succeed.

  • Highlighting quantifiable achievements, such as the 20% increase in sales for six consecutive months, helps provide concrete evidence of a candidate's capabilities and past successes that are relevant to the Retail Sales Associate role.
  • Personalizing the cover letter by mentioning the company's culture ( "invigorating culture of customer excellence and innovation" ) shows that the applicant has done their research and is genuinely interested in the company's values and mission.
  • Emphasizing leadership experience and the ability to work under pressure by noting the experience in leading a team at a high-traffic store like Best Buy is particularly relevant for a retail environment that requires teamwork and resilience.
  • Mentioning a specific award ( 'Highest Customer Satisfaction' accolade in 2018 ) ties in the applicant's personal achievements with industry-recognized metrics of success, thereby establishing credibility and a reputation for excellence.

What are the basics of the design or format of your retail sales associate cover letter?

To start, here's a reminder for you: the Applicant Tracker System (or software that is used to assess candidate profiles), won't be reading your retail sales associate cover letter.

Recruiters enjoy reading retail sales associate cover letters with a standardized format that uses:

  • the same font as the resume (e.g. modern ones like Raleway or Volkhov are prefered over the clichéd Times New Roman or Arial);
  • single spacing to keep the content concise and organized (this is all ready for you in our cover letter templates );
  • a one-inch margin to wrap around the text, like in our cover letter builder ;
  • PDF as a file format, as it allows your design (and visual element) to stay the same.

Finally, we can't go on without mentioning the key sections of your retail sales associate cover letter.

In the top one-third, make sure to include a header (with your contact information, name, role, and date), a salutation, and an introduction.

Next, follows the heart and soul of your retail sales associate cover letter or its body.

End your retail sales associate cover letter with a closing paragraph and, if you wish, a signature.

The top sections on a retail sales associate cover letter

  • Header : This section includes your contact information, the date, and the employer's contact information. It's essential for the recruiter to know who you are and how to respond to your application.
  • Greeting : Address the hiring manager by name if possible; it shows you've done your research and are genuinely interested in the position at their specific retail establishment.
  • Introduction : Here, you should capture the recruiter's interest by briefly stating your enthusiasm for the retail industry and any key experience that makes you an ideal candidate for a sales associate position.
  • Body : Comprising one or two paragraphs, this section outlines your relevant retail experience, customer service skills, and any accomplishments that demonstrate your ability to succeed in a sales-driven environment.
  • Closing : Conclude your cover letter by reiterating your interest in the position, inviting the recruiter to review your attached resume, and indicating your eagerness to discuss how your skills can contribute to the team’s success during a personal interview.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Customer service skills: Demonstrates the ability to engage with customers, understand their needs, and provide excellent service.
  • Sales expertise: Shows a track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets and an understanding of sales techniques and principles.
  • Product knowledge: Reflects the ability to learn about products quickly and effectively convey features and benefits to customers.
  • Communication skills: Highlights the ability to clearly and effectively communicate with customers, colleagues, and management, both in writing and verbally.
  • Adaptability and problem-solving: Reveals an aptitude for dealing with diverse customer queries and issues, adapting to various situations with ease and resolving customer complaints effectively.
  • Team collaboration: Exhibits a history of working well within a team environment, supporting fellow associates, and contributing to a positive store atmosphere.

Personalizing your retail sales associate cover letter salutation

Always aim to address the recruiter from the get-go of your retail sales associate cover letter.

  • the friendly tone (e.g. "Dear Paul" or "Dear Caroline") - if you've previously chatted up with them on social media and are on a first-name basis;
  • the formal tone (e.g. "Dear Ms. Gibbs" or "Dear Ms. Swift") - if you haven't had any previous conversation with them and have discovered the name of the recruiter on LinkedIn or the company website;
  • the polite tone (e.g. "Dear Hiring Manager" or "Dear HR Team") - at all costs aim to avoid the "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Sir/Madam", as both greetings are very old-school and vague.

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Department Name] Director,
  • Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],
  • Dear Dr. [Last Name],
  • Dear Hiring Committee,

Your retail sales associate cover letter introduction and the value you bring

Moving on from the "Dear Recruiter" to your professional introduction .

Use those first two sentences of your retail sales associate cover letter to present the biggest asset you'd bring to the organization.

Don't go into too much detail about your achievement or the skill set, but instead - go straight for the win.

That is - what is your value as a professional?

Would you be able to build stronger, professional relationships in any type of communication? Or, potentially, integrate seamlessly into the team?

Choosing your best achievement for the middle or body of your retail sales associate cover letter

Now that you have the recruiters' attention, it's time to write the chunkiest bit of your retail sales associate cover letter .

The body consists of three to six paragraphs that focus on one of your achievements.

Use your past success to tell a story of how you obtained your most job-crucial skills and know-how (make sure to back these up with tangible metrics).

Another excellent idea for your retail sales associate cover letter's middle paragraphs is to shine a light on your unique professional value.

Write consistently and make sure to present information that is relevant to the role.

Thinking about the closing paragraph of your retail sales associate cover letter

Before your signature, you have extra space to close off your retail sales associate cover letter .

Use it to either make a promise or look to the future.

Remind recruiters how invaluable of a candidate you are by showing what you plan to achieve in the role.

Also, note your availability for a potential next meeting (in person or over the telephone).

By showing recruiters that you're thinking about the future, you'd come off as both interested in the opportunity and responsible.

Retail Sales Associate cover letter advice for candidates with no experience

If you're worried about writing your Retail Sales Associate cover letter and have no professional experience , we sure have some advice for you.

Turn recruiters' attention to your transferable or relevant skills gained thanks to your life and work experience.

Instead of writing about past jobs, focus on one achievement (whether from your volunteering experience, education, etc.) and the skills it has helped you build.

Alternatively, you could focus your Retail Sales Associate cover letter on your career objectives and goals. Always remember to make those relevant to the job you're applying for by detailing how you see yourself growing as part of the company.

Recruiters would be way more impressed with candidates who fit the job profile and can bring about plenty of skills and vision to the table.

Key takeaways

Writing your retail sales associate cover letter doesn't need to turn into an endless quest, but instead:

  • Create an individual retail sales associate cover letter for each role you apply to, based on job criteria (use our builder to transform your resume into a cover letter, which you could edit to match the job);
  • Stick with the same font you've used in your resume (e.g. Raleway) and ensure your retail sales associate cover letter is single-spaced and has a one-inch margin all around;
  • Introduce your enthusiasm for the role or the company at the beginning of your retail sales associate cover letter to make a good first impression;
  • Align what matters most to the company by selecting just one achievement from your experience, that has taught you valuable skills and knowledge for the job;
  • End your retail sales associate cover letter like any good story - with a promise for greatness or follow-up for an interview.

The best way to start a retail cover letter is by immediately grabbing the hiring manager's attention. This can be done by stating your enthusiasm for the role and the company, and briefly highlighting your most relevant experience or skills. For example, "As a passionate retail professional with 5 years' experience in customer service and inventory management, I was thrilled to see the opportunity to apply for [Job Title] at [Company Name]." This introduction not only shows your excitement for the role, but also gives a snapshot of your qualifications, making the hiring manager want to read more.

Retailers should end a cover letter by summarizing their interest in the position and their qualifications. They should reiterate their enthusiasm for the opportunity and express their eagerness to contribute to the company's success. It's also important to thank the reader for their time and consideration. The closing should be professional and polite, using phrases like "Sincerely" or "Best regards," followed by their name and contact information. It's also a good idea to indicate their availability for an interview or further discussion. This ending leaves a positive impression, shows respect for the reader's time, and reinforces the applicant's interest in the position.

A retail cover letter should ideally be about one page long. This length is sufficient to express your interest in the position, highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and demonstrate how you could add value to the company. It's important to keep it concise and to the point, as hiring managers often have numerous applications to go through. A lengthy cover letter might not be fully read and key points could be missed. In retail, communication skills are highly valued, and a concise, well-written cover letter can effectively showcase this skill.

Writing a cover letter with no experience in retail can seem challenging, but it's definitely possible. Here's how you can approach it: 1. **Start with a strong introduction**: Begin by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Mention where you found the job posting and if you were referred by someone. 2. **Highlight your transferable skills**: Even if you don't have direct retail experience, you likely have skills that can be applied to a retail setting. These could include customer service, communication, problem-solving, or time management skills. Use specific examples from your past experiences to demonstrate these skills. 3. **Show enthusiasm for the industry**: Retail employers often value enthusiasm and a positive attitude as much as experience. Show that you're eager to learn and grow in the retail industry. You can do this by mentioning any relevant hobbies, interests, or coursework. 4. **Research the company**: Show that you've done your homework about the company and its products. This will demonstrate your interest in the role and your initiative. 5. **End with a strong conclusion**: Reiterate your interest in the role and your willingness to learn and contribute. Thank the employer for considering your application and express your hope for an opportunity to further discuss your qualifications. 6. **Proofread**: Make sure your cover letter is free of errors and is professionally written. This will show your attention to detail, a key skill in retail. Remember, everyone has to start somewhere. Even without direct experience, your enthusiasm and transferable skills can make you a strong candidate for a retail position.

1. Craft the best header and headline for your retail cover letter

Writing an effective retail cover letter starts with giving it a pleasant visual flow .

Adding a cover letter header and cover letter headline to your document is the best way to do this. These elements provide the employer with key pieces of information that help to give an overview of who you are and what your cover letter is about.

Starting with your header, this element should contain:

  • Your name and professional title
  • Your professional contact information (phone number, email address, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • The name of the company or employer you are applying to
  • The address of the company or employer

Here is an example of a well-formatted retail cover letter header

John Doe , Retail Professional (123) 456-7890 | [email protected] | linkedin.com/in/john-doe

To: Sales Associates United 1234 Street Address Casper, WY 82601

As far as where to place your header, it should be located in the top left corner of the page. Your personal information should be in a slightly larger font than the employer’s information to help it stand out.

A few spaces below this information and centered on the page is your cover letter headline. This is a short title or introductory statement that lets the employer know what the main point or purpose of your letter is. In this headline, you should include:

  • A relevant keyword , such as the name of the position
  • A memorable number or trigger word that catches the employer’s eye
  • A strong adjective or verb to showcase your professional vale
  • A personalized statement that lets the employer know the letter is specifically for them

Here is an example of an excellent retail cover letter headline

My 3-Step Approach to Successful Sales in Retail & How I Will Apply these Skills at Your Company

Trigger Word/Number: 3-Step Approach Keyword: Sales, Retail Adjective/Verb: Successful, Apply Personalized Statement: Your Company

2. Make the information in your retail cover letter personalized

Speaking of personalization , this is one of the most important factors to consider when writing a cover letter. The term personalization (when used to describe a cover letter) means that all of the content found within the letter is tailored to be highly relevant to the employer.

Tailoring a cover letter in this way requires you to do some professional digging to uncover key facts about the employer and their business.

This may include:

  • The company values
  • An employee motto or pledge
  • Specific staff members (especially those responsible for reviewing applications)

As part of this personalization process, you should create a personalized greeting that addresses a specific person by name, such as the hiring manager or company CEO.

Here are 3 examples of personalized cover letter greetings

Dear Hiring Manager Jane Smith,

  • Dear Ms. Jane Smith,
  • Dear CEO Jack Parker,

3. Create a compelling retail cover letter introduction

The introduction to your cover letter is the first paragraph an employer will read after they have reviewed your header and headline. If your headline is effectively written, the employer should already be highly interested in what you have to say.

In turn, your introduction needs to be equally compelling to not only grab the employer’s attention but keep them interested enough to read on.

A compelling cover letter introduction will often include:

  • A short summary of your professional history in retail
  • Key specializations that make you a strong candidate for the position
  • A mutual acquaintance (when possible) — a mutual acquaintance can include a professional associate of the employer, a current or former employee, your professional mentor, or anyone else with professional ties to the employer

Here is an example of a compelling introduction from a retail cover letter

I am a dedicated retail professional with 5+ years of experience working as a sales associate and merchandiser. After recently becoming acquainted with Mr. Hank Josephs, a recruiter who works closely with your company, Mr. Josephs recommended I apply to your company. Given your company’s need for a talented visual display designer, I believe my specialized experience with managing product displays makes me the perfect candidate for the position.

4. Showcase your professionalism in retail with skills and accomplishments

With your introduction out of the way, the employer should now know exactly who you are and why you are applying to their business.

Now, your next key step is to highlight all the qualifications that make you the top candidate for the job. This should include your most impressive skills and accomplishments within retail to show the employer that you bring real value to the table as a future employee.

As you describe your skills and accomplishments, keep your sentences concise and highly relevant. The employer should be able to easily skim through this information to gather the most important points.

Here are 6 retail skills to describe in a cover letter

  • Exemplary customer service
  • Inventory management
  • Money handling and payment processes
  • Organizing merchandise and product displays
  • Assisting in-store customers
  • Promoting new products

Here is an example of how to describe an accomplishment in a retail cover letter

In my previous retail position at [Former Employer], I was highly regarded as one of the top sales associates thanks to my exceptional customer service and positive attitude. Over the two years that I worked at this company, I received a perfect 5-star rating from customers. Additionally, I applied my leadership skills to mentor other sales associates in providing excellent customer service, leading the store’s overall rating to rise from 3.6 stars to 4.5 stars on Google.

5. Craft an effective retail cover letter conclusion

The last, but arguably most important, step to writing your retail cover letter is to create a persuasive closing statement.

You have one main goal with your conclusion — to convince the employer to contact you.

Keeping this in mind, some of the most important information to include in your conclusion is the best days and times to reach you, when you hope to hear back from the employer, and when you plan to follow up regarding your application.

6. Job search resources for retail professionals

Ever felt like finding a job in retail is like hunting for a needle in a haystack? Fret not! From specialized job boards to the best networking platforms, here are resources that should be on every retail professional's radar:

  • Retail job boards: Specialist sites like AllRetailJobs or RetailCrossing exclusively cater to the retail industry, rounding up the best opportunities — from sales associates to store managers — in one spot.
  • Job search sites: Websites like Indeed , Glassdoor , and ZipRecruiter regularly list job openings in retail. Leverage their advanced search options to find openings that perfectly match your qualifications and preferences.
  • Professional networking: While LinkedIn remains a top choice, also consider retail-centric networks, like The Retail Network or NRF (National Retail Federation) .
  • Trade associations: Organizations like the NRF or Association for Retail Environments offer industry news, resources, and networking opportunities. Joining such associations keeps you abreast of industry trends and opens doors to new prospects.
  • Staffing agencies: Businesses like Adecco or Retail Options deliver recruitment services tailored for the retail industry, making them a great port of call in your job search journey.
  • Company websites: Never underestimate the power of going directly to the source. Retail giants like Walmart , Macy's or Best Buy have extensive career pages detailing current vacancies.

Remember, the retail industry thrives on personality and customer interaction. Highlight these skills throughout your job search, and you'll be an asset potential employers can't overlook.

If you have ever wondered how a cover letter differs from a resume, this article will tell you everything about the key differences between the two .

Retail Cover Letter FAQ

What specific skills should i highlight in my retail cover letter.

Retail is a customer-focused industry. Therefore, top skills to highlight include customer service skills, communication abilities, and sales techniques. Don't forget about your problem-solving skills and adaptability  — these show your potential employer that you can handle unexpected situations on the sales floor.

How long should my retail cover letter be?

Just like a good sales pitch, your cover letter should be concise yet compelling. Aim for one full page — around 250 to 400 words. Remember to make every sentence count.

Should I write a generic cover letter and tweak it for different job applications?

While it's okay to have a standard format, make sure each cover letter is personalized for the job you're applying for. Hiring managers can often tell if a letter’s been mass-produced, which could make your application feel less genuine.

What if the job ad doesn’t ask for a cover letter?

Even if it's not explicitly requested, including a well-crafted cover letter can show initiative and your genuine interest in the position. It gives you a chance to express aspects that your resume simply can't cover.

Should I follow up after submitting my cover letter and resume?

Generally, it’s a good idea to follow up 7-10 days after submitting your application. However, make sure to adhere to any instructions mentioned in the job posting. If it notes not to follow up, respect the employer’s process.

Ronald Vogel

Sales Director

2296 Woodbridge Lane

Detroit, MI 48201

Dear Mr. Vogel,

As a highly motivated and results-driven sales professional, my skills and experience make me an ideal candidate for the sales position at Brixor.

During my time at Enigma, I was responsible for developing new business opportunities and managing key accounts. One accomplishment that I am particularly proud of is successfully closing a deal with a major retail chain resulting in an 8% increase in revenue for my team. Without understanding customer needs and tailoring solutions to the client, that would not have happened.

What excites me about joining Brixor is the company's reputation for innovation and excellence in customer service. Seeing how the team uses cutting-edge technology to deliver personalized solutions that meet each client's unique needs is inspiring. I am confident that my experience in consultative selling and account management aligns well with the needs of Brixor's sales department.

I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to Brixor’s lead generation and customer retention strategies during an interview or phone call.

Sincerely,

This sample looks neat, right? Let's teach you how to write a sales cover letter like that.

Use the Best Structure for Sales Cover Letters

Above, you just witnessed our take on a sales cover letter that sells.

But what was so great about it? Was it the intro? The template? Maybe the closing?

The answer is yes—it's all of these things. A great cover letter for sales jobs is one that is structured just right and which is pitch perfect .

Here’s what you should include on a cover letter in sales:

  • your contact information ,
  • the company’s details,
  • an opening greeting or salutation,
  • an introductory paragraph,
  • examples of the value you'd bring to the sales team,
  • reasons why this sales job is ideal for you,
  • a closing paragraph,
  • sign-off statement and your name,
  • a postscript (P.S.).

That’s our recommendation on what to put in the perfect sales cover letter. It’s kind of like the BANT framework , but to get the sales job.

Make sure the related resume for sales positions is in tip-top shape, as well:

  • Sales Associate Resume
  • Sales Manager Resume
  • Sales Representative Resume

Address Your Cover Letter for Sales Positions Correctly

To start a cover letter for sales jobs, first create a header section with the contact details of you and the recipient.

List Your Personal Details

At the very top of your sales position cover letter, aligned to the left, is where you'll add your contact deets. Include your name , email address , and phone number , and a LinkedIn profile URL .

Optionally, you could choose to add your mailing address, job title, or branding statement.

Make sure it matches your sales resume to offer the sales manager a unified package.

Pro Tip : Don’t add the remainder of your social links, profile URLs, and portfolio information with your contact details as you did on your salesperson resume, unless the account executive cover letter template you choose includes an area for them .

Add The Date of Writing

A formal letter, such as a cover letter for sales, requires a date:

September 1, 2019

Whether you’re a director of sales or a store assistant, the date of writing is important on any formal letter (and a sales associate cover letter is a formal document).

Include Their Details

Next, add the addressee, which, in your case, is the hiring manager, sales executive, or HR director. Follow that up by inserting the company address just beneath.

Here’s what the finished sales job cover letter address area might look like:

address area on a cover letter

Addressing your cover sheet for resumes the wrong way is just like not including one at all, so make sure you get it right: How to Address a Cover Letter: Sample & Guide [20+ Examples]

Start Off on the Right Foot

The opening area, whether its a entry-level cover letter for sales or a senior sales position cover letter, is super important to get right.

Its prominent location ensures that it gets the most eye time, and if you’ve got to hook them here if you want a shot at them reading the rest of it.

Start with a Greeting or Salutation

Say you’re cold calling. After it rings on their end and they pick up, you just launch into your spiel: Hello, so would you like to buy our cutting-edge...

You can see why that wouldn’t work, right? You’re looking for conversion, not churn, and on your sales position cover letter, the same rule applies.

Finding the name of the dear hiring manager makes the difference between it feeling personalized and it seeming like it was mass-delivered to the entire sales district.

First names work miracles, as they immediately grab the attention of the Head of Sales or HR manager. But, you can be more formal and use their last name, if need be.

If you're unable to locate their name, don't stress. We've got some other ideas: Cover Letter Introductions [20+ Examples]

Craft a Strong Introduction Paragraph

The opening statement on a sales cover letter should be like the irresistible first line in any great sales proposal.

There are plenty of ways to go about this, but as long as they grab the hiring manager’s attention and makes them want to read further, you can’t go wrong.

Here's a great sales cover letter example opening:

Cover Letter Example for Sales Jobs: Opening Paragraph

As a longtime user and fan of Lansing’s peerless software offerings, I was thrilled to see the opening for an SaaS sales account manager. With my experience as an award-winning salesperson at AWS, I know I can use my skill set and product knowledge to become a valuable member of the Lansing sales team.

This sales cover letter sample is written about the company specifically. It gives a seductive taste of why you’d be perfect for their sales team.

It’s not only a great opening paragraph, but it’ll make them want to read more!

Show Your Worth in the Middle Paragraphs

It’s a hirer’s market . The odds don’t seem to be in your favor, but don’t stress. You’ll be one of the few who wrote a sales cover letter, and the only one who did it so masterfully.

These next two areas (a paragraph for each is suggested) give you plenty of room to motivate them to hire you; after all, a cover letter is also known as a motivation letter or letter of motivation .

Explain Why You’re Perfect for Them

You’ve stunned them with that seductively sick sales start. Now, time to quickly and expertly reel them in by showing how you’re the perfect fit for their sales team.

Here’s what a job applicant might say on a sample sales cover letter:

Sales Cover Letter Example: Middle Part

At my current role with AWS, I have many responsibilities and achievements that would translate well into a role with Lansing. AWS has numerous software and cloud services, many which have counterparts at Lansing, such as their virtual machines and the machine learning catalog. On top of that, my accounts there have often all been lucrative clients for the company, and I’m sure that I could achieve similar results at Lansing, such as:

  • Reduced Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) of main accounts by over 18%
  • Implemented new measures that increased lead generation by more than 37%

See that middle part of a cover letter for sales? With this compelling paragraph, they see that your acquired sales associate skills and sales experience makes you the ideal new hire for the sales job. Also, you prove it with quantifiable numbers.

Pro Tip : Remember using keywords on your resume ? It’s one of the most important ways to make sure it’s tailored . Add them on your inbound or outbound sales cover letter, as well.

Say Why They’re Perfect for You

You gave a powerful spiel just now. Good job! But now they look at you, the salesman or saleswoman, and get a bit guarded, like I wonder what’s in it for them?

It’s the same when applying to sales positions.

They already know money is a key part of why you’re selling them, but if that’s all there is for you, they’ll choose someone else. They don’t want to feel that you’re only in it for the money. You told them why you’re the best possible future salesperson, so now explain why this sales job is perfect for you:

Obtaining the SaaS sales account manager position at Lansing would be a dream turned reality. I’ve been a years-long fan and user of several of your consumer offerings, and there is no other sales team that would make me as excited to work for. Should I be honored with being chosen for the sales position, I’d certainly be the envy of my friends!

How about that sales job cover letter?

You’ve praised the company and explained why their sales team is the only one for you—the VP of sales or the hiring sales manager will feel like they just earned one hell of a commission after finding your cover letter!

Here’s a kicker for you. We’ve got a wealth of tips on these two central resume cover sheet paragraphs and on writing a senior or junior sales cover letter that will let you stand out: 35+ Successful Cover Letter Tips, Advice & Guidelines

Create a Compelling Finish for Your Sales Cover Letter

You’ve come so far, but don’t blow it yet by losing that momentum before you cross the finish line. Summon that second wind so you can end it with a powerful closing statement.

Use a potent closing sentence or paragraph to quickly tie it all together:

Sales Cover Letter Example: Final Paragraph

I would welcome the chance to discuss your current software sales objectives and show you how my successes at AWS can translate into growth and increased customer retention for Lansing.

This sales cover letter sample was easy-breezy, right? You wrapped it up with a bow by summarizing your cover letter in sales and then leaving the decision in their hands. For them, all they see is up and to the right!

Use a Complimentary Close

A closing sentiment followed by your name seals the deal.

Here’s how complicated that is:

Zosia Marigold

Not complicated at all, right? That closing sentiment (“ Sincerely ” here) is known as a complimentary close or complimentary closing, and that is then followed by your John Hancock to end the cover letter.

Ending strongly on a cover letter for sales positions is just as critical as an attention-grabbing start, like the perfect value proposition. Read this for more tips and examples: How to End a Cover Letter: Sample & Complete Guide [+20 Examples]

Add a Postscript to Seal the Deal

Wait, you said we were done!

I know, but just hear me out for one more moment, if you will. Adding a P.S., though not necessary, is a great writing hack when preparing a sales cover letter. Every great cover letter for salespeople contains a postscript.

Here’s what I mean:

Cover Letter for Sales: Example of a P.S.

P.S. I’d love the chance to sit down with you over a coffee and go over how I can bring similar results (12% increase in retention) to your company, as well.

A postscript near the end of a sales cover letter is a great way to seal the deal so you can get paid for sealing deals!

Key Takeaway

Writing a job converting sales cover letter wasn’t as complicated as you thought, now, was it?

Just remember to keep these points in mind for a successful cover letter for sales jobs:

Start with a bang —Your opening statement on your sales cover letter is important because it’ll determine if the VP of Sales or Director of Sales reads any further or slams the door in your face.

Show you belong together —This is your sales pitch, your spiel. Use the body area to show (and prove!) that you’re a perfect fit for the company and they’re the ideal sales team for you.

Finish strong —You held their attention to the end, but use a strong ending so they’ll be sure to move on to your resume and a lucrative sales interview.

Now you have a sales cover letter that’ll surely take you from Closed-Lost to Closed-Won in the company’s hiring funnel.
