The second passage also explains the event in more depth. A family day can be many things; remember that your readers are likely not familiar with what you're talking about, so details help them get a clearer picture.

Lastly, the second passage makes the importance of the event clear: it helped residents connect with younger family members, and it helped retirement homes seem less intimidating to children, so now some residents see their grand kids more often.

Step 6: Discuss What You Learned

By doing these duties and responsibilities, a student can learn and practice social rules.

Student life:  The period of life which is spent in school, college and at home in studying and learning to acquire knowledge is called student life. It is the time to sow seeds. It is the time to prepare them for the examination. It is the time to build their life morally, educationally, socially and physically.  The heat and dust of life and the hue and cry of the world generally do not move them.

Duty of the students: There are three duties of a man. They are duty to God, duty to parents and duty to mankind. But the main duty of the student is to study. They cannot keep them away from this duty. In their free time, they can go to serve the suffering people. The students are seen to spoil their free time by gossiping, roaming here and there or sitting idly. They can spend this time fruitfully for society. They can play important role during the national crisis. During flood, cyclones and famine students should stand by the affected people. They can collect money from the rich people to raise funds, rescue people, feed the hungry, and nurse the sick. The medical students may serve the sick with proper food, clothes, medicine, and other necessary things. All these remind us of Rabindranath Tagore’s words.

Nowadays we feel the need of good politicians in the country. The students can also be a good politician beside their studies. Making perfect citizens: Social work is a challenging job. Here, the sense of humanity, honesty, morality is a factor to do this volunteer service perfectly. In this case, the students get the chance to rectify them for the target of making themselves perfect citizens for the country removing any selfish motive. They also get the opportunity to apply their learning topic as an experiment through social work.

Students, in particular, owe a debt to the society. It is therefore their duty to do some kind of social service for others.

Students have no worries and cares about earning their livelihood and they have unlimited vigour and vitality. So they can be of great help in the field of social service. Almost eighty per cent of the population of India lives in rural areas. Most of the people living in villages are illiterate. They are the victims of many social evils. Students can do a great deal to improve the lot of the villagers.

During their vacation, students should go to the villages and serve the villagers. Students can also provide help to many other social organisations which are active in villages and provide different types of services to the people living in rural areas. They can help the sufferers of an epidemic or help in the famine-stricken area.

Students can also do something for the defence of their country. They can get training in first aid, fire fighting, air raid precautions, use of rifles, nursing etc. It has been found that students today are not interested in social work. They lead a dull, cheerless and irresponsible life. They idle away most of their time in going to cinemas. This is very deplorable. Such activities do not provide inner joy to individuals. On the contrary, students waste their money and precious time in these useless pursuits. Social service done with selfless efforts provides a great inner joy and keeps an individual happy, mentally as well as emotionally.

Firstly, Students can play the educational role in very successful manner. They can teach illiterate people in villages and towns whenever they have free time.. They may provide service to the members of the society in their time of need. Secondly, students can have discussions with common people everywhere on our social and political duties. We know that the putting garbage at proper places on roads and keeping the streets clean are very important. Students can tell the people how to do it. They can take part in cleaning and mending themselves.

Thirdly, students can work within social service organizations like Jaago Foundation, Red crescent etc. to provide help and guidance to the suffering humanity. They can utilize their time in assist helpless, poor and ill people in reaching hospitals. They can take out people from flood and earthquake.

Students get long vacation. It is criminal to let them go waste. Students from vital areas can help the villagers in agriculture. They can turn the fallow lands into smiling fields with their own hands. Students can demonstrate to the villagers the scientific methods of agriculture. They can teach them how to collect village refuse and turn it into manure which doubles the yield of crops per acre. They. can impress the villagers that to burn cow dung is to burn gold. It is the students who can do immense social service in the Community Projects and National Extension Services. They can brings about a revolution in the villagers and completely change the face of the country.

Illiteracy is rampant in India. It prevails in every nook and corner. Students owe a debt to society. It is their duty to impart education to their illiterate brethren. They must give in the same measure as they have received and are still receiving. The villagers cannot exercise their right to vote intelligently and correctly if they cannot read a book or a newspaper. The students can do a lot in this respect and they must not shirk off their responsibility.

True social service lies in learning the dignity of labour, learning to do things with our own hands. Students must serve the masses as a matter of national duty and as a labour of love. It would be in the interest of the country if social service is made compulsory for the award of a University degree.

To sum up, every one must work hard to raise India. More work falls to the share of the students as they are more energetic than others. Students must have a burning desire to serve India. They must not expect any reward in return. A good action is its own reward.

Like others, students have also their duties towards the society. Students are the future citizens of the country and have different roles to play. Though they should devote a greater part of their time in attending to their studies they should spend a portion of their time in the service of the people. It is needless to say that they get much time for merry making, playing, amusements, touring etc. apart from their routine life of study. Students should cultivate the spirit of service from the very formative stage.

Most of the time of a student is wasted in idle gossip, in roaming and in fruitless work. It is better to utilise the power of youth in socially productive work than to squander our precious time in loitering at the market place or before theatre hall.

If a student utilizes his time fruitfully and in socially useful work he gets contentment. Contentment is his satisfaction with his position. Students should remember that they are born for the improvement of the society by instilling the spirit of service in them. They can help the mankind in the best possible way.

If a student does not have the will or spirit to work he cannot succeed in life. We elevate our life style by doing well to the society. Social service is a voluntary work and one cannot be compelled to do a work. Social service fulfills two conditions. It helps one to utilise the leisure hours and the society gets benefited by it.

Students should be taught how to serve the people of their country. They may teach reading, writing and arithmetic to the vast majority of illiterate Indians. They may render service to the members of the society in their time of need. They may relieve the suffering of the masses by nursing the sick.

Spreading education is no mean service. They can make the illiterate masses aware of their rights and duties. Once zeal is created amongst the students illiteracy may be wiped out. The Government cannot fulfill the ambitions of the vast mass of people.

Hence the students can guide the people in the right direction whether it is a question of digging canals or constructing educational institutions. Sympathy and fellow feeling should be imparted the students to do some noble works for the people.

People of our country are not aware of how to keep the atmosphere hygienic. People can be taught by students how to lead a life of cleanliness and how to keep their lives free from diseases.

Students can co-operate with people on matters of public interest such as education, sanitation, trade and commerce. Students can participate in cleaning drains, ponds during the leisure hours. They can help people during natural calamities such as earth quake, flood, drought, cyclone by collecting funds from different sources.

Students have a spirit to work but the guardians and, teacher should guide them in the right way. Social service can be safely managed if they can be guided properly. Our leaders should guide them in the right way.

The Charlestown Division of the Boston Municipal Court hosted a Law Day Celebration on May 1st during a ceremony which featured remarks from court leaders: Charlestown First Justice Lisa Grant, Boston Municipal Court Chief Justice Tracy Lee Lyons, Probation Commissioner Pamerson Ifill, and Clerk Magistrate Helen White. The 2024 Law Day theme is "Voices of Democracy." 

Harvard Kent School 6th graders participated in an essay content during which the top three students were awarded prizes. First place winner Linna Mai read her essay, titled  "What Law Means to Me." The second and third place winners are Lorelei Kielbasa and Iyobosa Uwague. The students were treated to a tour of each department as well as the Charlestown Court Museum, located on the court's second floor. The Museum features artifacts and items that celebrate Honorable George Lewis Ruffin, who in 1883 became the first African-American judge in the United States. Judge Ruffin, who presided over the Charlestown Court, was also the first African-American to graduate from Harvard Law School four years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. In addition to the tour, the Charlestown students were served lunch.   "It was a very well received event and we hope to host this celebration annually," said Jeffrey Kyi, BMC-Charlestown Assistant Chief Probation Officer.

‘IU Birdman’ and other urban legends: Grad student digitizes Bloomington campus folklore

According to Indiana University Bloomington legend, a male student who lived in McNutt Quadrangle in the mid-1960s became known for a bird-like call every evening that began slowly and rose to a hysterical, shrieking laugh. The so-called “IU Birdman” allegedly became so popular that students would fill the parking lots at McNutt and Foster quadrangles to hear the call.

That story persisted for years and even made its way into essays by folklore students.

Research into campus legends such as the “IU Birdman” typically has required hours of digging through boxes of student papers. But a graduate student’s class project to create a digital collection of these legends now makes it easier to find and read them.

Elise Suarez, a Master of Library Science student in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering , collected and digitized 25 legends specific to IU Bloomington and created a website where the legends are accessible and easy to find through searches by subject, location, legend types and dates.

“For this project, I wanted to look at IU urban legends because I did a similar project as an undergraduate, about student urban legends in folklore,” Suarez said. “It was interesting to still see these legends in 2020 that dated back to the 1950s.”

Campus legends can offer insight into people’s fears and anxieties, Suarez added.

Her project was for Luddy associate professor John Walsh ’s Digital Libraries course.

“This was a very intriguing one to me,” Walsh said. “I personally find the IU focus interesting, the campus legends. Some of my own research revolves around pop culture and comics, so I find ghost stories interesting and fascinating.”

Suarez, who earned bachelor’s degrees in folklore and ethnomusicology, history and English at IU Bloomington, knew of the campus legends from her coursework and involvement with the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Student Association , which hosts an annual ghost walk where campus legends are shared.

Suarez said she knew where to find the papers she sought, having worked with Indiana University Archives ’ vast and renowned collections for all of her undergraduate degrees. She was also motivated to create her digital collection by the temporary shutdown of in-person research at IU Archives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now more things have moved online, so if you are not able to get to campus personally, it’s great to have it in one place,” she said.

“I do think digitizing should be done more. The Irish National Folklore Collection in Dublin is digitizing its folklore content, for example. The trend is going that way.”

During the fall 2023 semester, Suarez said she spent 12 hours in IU Archives’ Reading Room, going through hundreds of student papers from 1958 to 1972 to find Bloomington campus legends. Carrie Schwier, IU Archives’ outreach and public services archivist, helped her obtain boxes of papers to search and clarified locations of campus buildings that no longer exist or have been renamed.

As part of her research, Suarez had to consider whether any prior consent met current standards, or whether names and other personal information would need to be redacted on the digitized version. She chose 25 essays from the Folklore Institute ’s student papers collection, including “The Hatchet Man,” “The Teter Quad Ghost,” “The Pickled Arm” and “The Roommate’s Death.”

Suarez used a scanner in the Reading Room to create digital versions of the papers. She built the Indiana University Legends website where the papers now live using CollectionBuilder , an open-source framework created by IU alumni Devin Becker and Olivia Wikle — both professional librarians who took Walsh’s Digital Libraries course and earned Master of Library of Science degrees. Suarez said she designed the website to be helpful to researchers and the general population.

Walsh said he was impressed by Suarez’s project.

“Elise was a very good student in the course, and there were a lot of good projects,” Walsh said. “I’ve had a lot of good projects done on personal collections, but I encourage working with other departments and repositories on campus; Elise’s project is a good example.”

Schwier said she enjoyed working with Suarez and loved her project.

“In my job I partner with a lot of teaching faculty to get students to do this type of thing. I love seeing historical research of the archives used for university purposes and students creating new knowledge,” Schwier said. “This was an example of Elise bringing her knowledge of folklore to the existing collection and creating a map for it.”

Suarez would like a career involving archive work, possibly for a museum or university, and said the hands-on experience of the course project was great preparation for such work.

Although the campus legends project was originally for class, Suarez said she hopes it can have use beyond that. The website link is listed under the collections and archives section on the website for the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology in the College of Arts and Sciences , is part of her staff profile with the department and has been shared through the department’s social media channels. Schwier said Suarez’s website could be shared with researchers who are interested in urban legends, and could be included in the web archiving that University Archives does to preserve examples of websites.

Suarez’s project could be the start of a wider project to preserve the university’s entire folklore collection.

“I have a dream for this collection, ideally that it would all be digitized so that the data can be used for all sorts of digital humanities projects,” Schwier said. “This website is like a first step, like a concept proposal that could be done on a larger scale with the collection.”

Maryland Higher Education Commission STUDENT SUCCESS WITH LESS DEBT

Teaching fellows for maryland scholarship.

Who May Apply?​​

• Applicants who are enrolled or plan to enroll at an eligible institution in an undergraduate or graduate program.
• Applicants seeking to change careers to pursue a course of study or program in an academic discipline leading to a Maryland professional teacher's certificate. 
• Applicants must agree to work as public school or public prekindergarten teachers in the State upon completion of their studies at elementary and secondary schools that have at least 50% of the students in the school eligible for free or reduced-price meals (FRPM). 
• Enroll full-time or part-time at an eligible institution pursuing a course of study or program leading to a Maryland professional teacher's certificate.

Note: An individual who has been employed as a teaching assistant at a public school or public prekindergarten program in Maryland for at least 2 years may apply and is eligible to hold the scholarship as a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student.  

A recipient of this  scholars​hip may not hold a Maryland professional teacher's certificate.

How to Apply?

Applicants for the Teaching Fellows for Maryland scholarship must submit the online application through their​ MDCAPS account. The online application and all required documents must be submitted by December 31,  2024,   for consideration of the award.

​ Service Obligation Requirement

An applicant awarded the Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship must sign and return a promissory note agreeing to begin fulfillment of the service obligation as follows:  

A recipient of the Teaching Fellows scholarship must teach in a public school or public prekindergarten program in a high needs school (as identified by MSDE), or in a grade level or content area in which there is a shortage of qualified educators:

• For a recipient who receives a scholarship as an undergraduate or graduate student, the service obligation is for 2 years.
• If a recipient is unable to perform the service obligation required because there are no available positions in a qualifying school, grade level, or content area, the recipient may work in any public school or public prekindergarten program in the State. 

Students are responsible for verifying that their place of employment is at a high–needs school, grade level, or content area with a shortage of qualified educators. ​

Eligible Institutions

The Teaching Fellows for Maryland Scholarship may be used at a:

• ​Maryland public senior higher education institution that possesses a certificate of approval from the Commission and has a department, school, or college of education, or
• Maryland private non-profit institution of higher education that possesses a certificate of approval from the Commission, has a department, school, or college of education, and agrees to provide a matching grant to an undergraduate or graduate student who receives a Teaching Fellows of Maryland scholarship.

• Hood College (Undergraduate students)
• Johns Hopkins University School of Education (Graduate students)
• Loyola University Maryland (Undergraduate and graduate students)
• Maryland Institute College of Art (Undergraduate and graduate students)
• Notre Dame of Maryland University (Undergraduate and graduate students)
• Stevenson University (Undergraduate and graduate students)
• Washington College (Undergraduate ​students)

​​Award Amount

An award applicant is eligible to receive an award contingent on the availability of funds as follows:

• ​At a Maryland  public senior higher education institution , the scholarship award is equivalent to 100% of the annual tuition, mandatory fees, and room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate.
• At a Maryland  private nonprofit institution , the scholarship award is equal to the lesser of:
• 100% of the annual tuition and mandatory fees of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) and 100% of the room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution; or
• 50% of the annual tuition and mandatory fees of a resident undergraduate or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution and 100% of the room and board of a resident undergraduate student or graduate student, as appropriate, at the institution.​​

A private nonprofit institution must provide a matching scholarship award in an amount equal to the State award provided for tuition & fees only.  Private nonprofit institutions are not required to match State funds awarded for room and board.

Renewal Requirements

A recipient is eligible to receive a renewal award for up to three years if the recipient

• Continues to be a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student.
• Continues to make satisfactory progress toward a degree, and maintains the standards of the institution.

If a recipient of the Teaching Fellows of Maryland scholarship is enrolled in a course of study that is determined by the institution to require five years to complete, the recipient may renew the annual award four times. The recipient must submit a “Program of Study" appeal, by the deadline, providing documentation of the program of study requirements.​

36th African American Scholarship Essay awards tackles subject of social media

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Northwest Louisiana students take on the subject of social media to earn a scholarship to the schools of their choosing.

On June 1, at 1 p.m., the 36th Shreveport-Bossier-DeSoto African American Scholarship Awards Committee will present its annual ESSAY Scholarship Award at the Shreve Memorial Library, Walette Branch, 362 Hearne Avenue, Shreveport.

Each high school graduate was asked to think about and write a 300-word double-spaced essay on “Does Social Media Do More Harm Than Good”. During the event, the students will share their essays.

Over 20 scholarships will be given to various students, who graduated from schools in northwest Louisiana to attend the college of their choice
