Horror-comedy has held Indian audiences in thrall since the early 2000s, with more than 100 films in the genre being released. Amar Kaushik’s “ Bhediya ” (literally “wolf”), Bollywood’s first creature comedy, despite its punishing length, is a terrifically entertaining romp through the jungles of Northeastern India that delivers pro-environment and anti-racism messages and also has the potential to become a franchise.

The accent in “Bhediya” is more on the often juvenile and sometimes scatological comedy than the creatures. When the creatures do appear, it is a triumph of top notch visual effects, executed by the team that also worked on blockbuster “RRR” at London’s MPC. Performances are excellent throughout with Dhawan and Sanon carrying the film with ease, but the standout is Banerjee, an actor who can pull off psychopaths and bumbling comics with equal felicity and timing.

With a running time of more than two and a half hours, the film overstays its welcome, compounded by the traditional Bollywood speed breakers of song and dance and romantic interludes, which periodically interrupt the werewolf tale plot. There are a couple of MCU-style Easter eggs in the end credits and the second of them places “Bhediya” squarely in the “Stree” universe. A franchise surely beckons.

A movie theater would probably be the best place to see “Kill,” a bloody Hindi-language Indian beat-em-up set on a train to New Delhi. The movie features a handful of visually dynamic fight scenes, choreographed by action directors Se-yeong Oh and Parvez Sheikh (“Fighter,” “ War ”), directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat , and shot by cinematographer Rafey Mehmood . “Kill” also features a threadbare plot and a few too many lulls between action scenes, so you might need to be seated before and focused on a big screen to see it at its best.

Thankfully, these blemishes aren’t so significant as to deflate the movie’s prevailing mood. You might still leave the theater wishing you cared more about Amrit (Lakshya), a one-man-army commando, and Tulika ( Tanya Maniktala ), a mostly defenseless woman on whose behalf Amrit creams a few dozen heavies. A rowdy audience and/or loud sound system will likely give theatergoers the extra boost needed to keep this helium-light genre exercise moving.

“Kill” still feels long at 105 minutes. Produced by Bollywood figurehead Karan Johar, “Kill” skimps on many of the flamboyant melodramatic touches that have come to define contemporary Indian cinema for Western audiences. Moreover, there’s barely a conventional reason to root for Amrit as he tears through car after car of indistinct baddies. He meets but does not sweep Tulika off her feet after she celebrates her engagement—to someone else. She wants to show respect to her father (Harsh Chhaya), who, like her fiancé, disappears too quickly to matter. 

There are additional supporting characters, like Viresh ( Abhishek Chauhan ), Amrit’s best buddy and fellow National Security Guardsman, and Fani ( Raghav Juyal ), a brash young kidnapper who gets hung up on Tulika. They’re ultimately neither so interesting nor as important as the sheer spectacle of watching Lakshya and Chauhan flip, tumble, and hurl themselves around various train compartments. 

Oh and Sheikh’s choreography gets a better showcase here than in their recent Yash Raj Spy Universe collaborations, like “ Tiger 3 ,” whose action scenes were more focused on action figure poses and computer-generated mayhem. “Kill” frequently delivers the sort of action one might expect from a movie with an action-verb title, though one sometimes wishes that more time was spent with the train’s many other anxious passengers.

In theory, you don’t need to worry about the generic setup that Bhat and co-writer Ayesha Syed provide. Then again, several dramatic moments, both major and minor, drag when they should coast to the next big sequence. A handful of action scenes feel light and even look monotonous, partly given the limitations of the movie’s primary setting. These set pieces tend to be brisk and engaging but aren’t so relentless or intense that they’re entirely disarming.

The brawl that comes about a half hour into the movie feels like a wasted opportunity, despite strong choreography, given the distracting presence of other commuters, who aren’t cowering in the background but rather in close proximity to Lakshya and his opponents. A handful of crucial moments, where Amrit rallies or remembers why he’s fighting, look more like well-mounted rehearsal footage. You don’t need to be a Johar diehard to notice that an extra dash of melodrama is missing here, though his most recent rom-com, “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” is worth your time. 

“Kill”’s high-concept scenario is mostly a fun idea in search of better execution. To their credit, the on-camera actors look good when they work each other over, and the filmmakers do a fine job of not only keeping pace with their performers but also cutting their fights in such a way that you never have to strain your neck to see whatever’s just out of frame. The sound design also keeps a certain ambient tension up, and the spare use of music on the soundtrack keeps you wondering about what might be coming up next. Better yet, the blood and gore that erupts from a range of good and bad characters is also effectively surprising, at least on a moment-to-moment basis.

“Kill” often moves well enough that you might not care about the various bumps along the way until the end credits roll, by which point you’ll hopefully be too high on adrenaline to care. In thinking about why audiences should prioritize movie-watching in movie theaters, one shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss the pure lizard-brain pleasures of watching a no-frills crowd-pleaser deliver exactly what its title promises on as big a screen as you can find. Isn’t that what you crave from a good beat-the-heat summer movie, beyond air conditioning and concession stand treats? “Kill” tics off most of the essential boxes for a good popcorn flick, making it easy to resist but harder to pass up.

Stree 2 continues to blow away box office expectations, reaching a major global milestone in just 12 days. After Vicky (Rajkumar Rao) and his friends scare away the titular spirit that haunted the town of Chanderi, they face a new supernatural threat — a headless ghost who abducts women. The Indian horror -comedy sequel comes six years after the original movie, which also launched the franchise Maddock Supernatural Universe. Following Stree 2 's release during India's Independence Day, the horror comedy had an exceptional box office debut weekend, even cracking the United States domestic top 10 chart with $2.57 million and a global total of $9.1 million.

Now, according to Forbes , Stree 2 is dominating the Bollywood box office as the movie has now crossed $70.1 million globally . Of that total, $59.3 million comes from India. With this box office update, the movie has set many records, including the highest-grossing Hindi-language movie of 2024 (surpassing Fighter ), the second-highest-grossing Indian movie of 2024 (only behind Kalki 2898 AD ), and the ninth-highest-grossing Hindi-language movie of all-time. In addition, the horror comedy also ranks no. 19 as the highest-grossing Indian movie of all time.

How Is Stree 2 Dominating The Box Office & Breaking Records?

There has been a growing interest in supernatural bollywood movies..

Stree 2 's box office success comes at a unique time, with a growing interest in Indian supernatural/horror movies . While Bollywood has seen successes in the supernatural-horror genre, including Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Ram Gopal Varma's Bhoot , it has been tough to find a consistent general crowd. That narrative has since changed, as evident with Bhool Bhulaiyaa expanding into a franchise 15 years after the original movie and Ajay Devgn's Shaitaan finding similar success, with a sequel now in development. However, even Stree 2 's box office run is unprecedented for a horror/supernatural movie, when record-breaking Bollywood movies typically fall under romances , historical epics, or action blockbusters.

As Stree 2 continues to win at the box office, it makes the development of another sequel inevitable.

However, many factors contributed to Stree 2 's incredible commercial success. The original 2018 movie was a surprise hit and garnered generally positive reviews , with praise including the balance between the scare and humor and Rao's performance. The movie also made roughly $21.7 million at the global box office, encouraging a franchise that consists of four more movies with two more in development. Aside from one horror movie, three are part of the expanded universe — Bhediya , Munjya , and Stree 2 . However, except for Munjya , those movies have not found similar box office achievements as Stree and its sequel.

Ultimately, the sequel's success came down to its release strategy and the star power of Shraddha Kapoor. Stree 2 was released during the holiday period of India's Independence Day and the festivities of Rakshabandhan , giving the advantage of the five-day extended weekend. With it also being a sequel, there was strong familiarity with the movie's content, premise, and cast. In addition, the sequel also honed in on Kapoor's popularity with audiences, with marketing even putting her front and center. This is an interesting detail, as Kapoor doesn't have a huge screen time in the sequel compared to her co-stars Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, and Aparshakti Khurana.

Netflix has a great selection of Bollywood movies and for anyone who is looking for a new one to watch, here are some great picks.

As Stree 2 continues to win at the box office, it makes the development of another sequel inevitable. Producer Dinesh Vijan has already confirmed that Stree 3 is in development , with its release expected in 2026 . The movie also opens the door for more storytelling, with Kapoor's She still wondering around in the universe. Even with that, this would hopefully expand interest in the Maddock Supernatural Universe, with Vampires of Vijaynagar and Bhediya 2 slated for next year.

‘the lord of the rings: the rings of power’ review: season 2 of amazon’s fantasy prequel is too epic for its own good.

As Sauron continues fixating on precious jewelry, all of Middle-earth ramps up toward a world-changing, era-defining showdown between good and evil.

Throughout much of the second season of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings : The Rings of Power , characters accuse one another of playing right into the hands of the dark lord Sauron (Charlie Vickers). And while they’re often right about Sauron being behind this sinister scheme or that one, after a point, he has to acknowledge he can’t take all the credit. “You think too much of me,” he scoffs to one foe. “The road goes, ever winding, and not even I can see all its paths.”

The issue is largely one of imbalance. While The Rings of Power has always felt enormous, as befits both its continent-spanning plot and its eye-watering budget, its true secret weapon has been its emphasis on smaller, more personal plights. Lord of the Rings lore tends to slide off my brain like a fried egg off Teflon. But I found it easy enough in the first season to fall in with the friendship between the shrewd elf politician Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and the obstinate dwarf prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur), or the star-crossed romance between the valiant elf soldier Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) and the righteous human healer Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi). I became invested in the fate of Middle-earth because I cared about them, not the other way around.

Take Sauron. His human guise, Halbrand, spent the first chapter criss-crossing the continent with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and striking up a flinty-flirty dynamic that made his ultimate betrayal that much more devastating. By contrast, his elven guise, Annatar, spends nearly this entire outing in a single building, manipulating Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) so easily that he seems almost bored; for an entity whose sinister aims set the whole plot in motion, this Sauron is oddly static. Or take the Stranger (Daniel Weyman). When he’s simply hanging out with his Harfoot pals Nori (Markella Kavenagh) and Poppy (Megan Richards), he’s as charming as he’s ever been — maybe more so, now that he has the language to express a wry sense of humor. But he spends too much of the season inching toward a name reveal that rivals Solo ‘s for superfluousness, and too much else of it trying to evade an ominous figure (Ciarán Hinds) even more mysterious than he is.

When The Rings of Power does remember to check back in with more human-scale (or elf-scale, or dwarf-scale, or what have you) emotions, glimmers of its original charm return. Galadriel might spend too much of this outing obsessing over her shiny new jewelry, but she’s still blessed with Clark’s uncommon ability to generate chemistry with seemingly anyone. Durin IV and Disa (Sophia Nomvete) remain the cutest couple J.R.R. Tolkien never invented, and their warmth keeps the existential threats to the dwarven kingdom Khazad-Dûm grounded in real and relatable feeling. Surprisingly, the orcs emerge as one of the show’s more compelling factions — thanks in no small part to the bittersweet sense of tragedy underlying its vicious leader, Adar (Sam Hazeldine, replacing Joseph Mawle).

Then those moments march on, because this show has an epic endgame to get to, and it can only tarry so long before it needs to get back to getting its chess pieces into place. It’s too bad. At its best, television can bring us right into the action, until its characters’ joys or devastations feel indistinguishable from our own. Instead, by prioritizing grandiose lore over intimacy and heart, The Rings of Power puts its story behind glass. You’ll get to admire the series’ ambition and its beauty; you’ll come to understand how things happened and why; perhaps you’ll even formulate some ideas about what it all means. But precious little of it will feel like anything that might reach out and touch you.

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
