Kerala Architecture - A Case study

The vernacular architecture of any place is evolved through ages by consistent and continuous effort for more efficient solutions. Housing typologies though a result of multiple determinants, climate and culture are the two most important determinants. Materials, construction, and technology are best treated as modifying factors, rather than form determinants. This paper studies the evolution of vernacular architecture of Kerala in response to climatic conditions and varied cultural influences it has been subjected to. The orientation of buildings", internal arrangement of spaces, the presence of internal courtyards , use of locally available materials and other socio-cultural factors have combined together to create the vernacular architecture as it exists today. Other than improved thermal comfort, the vernacular architecture of Kerala also gives a number of pointers towards betterment of architectural quality in modern architecture with respect to planning principles, aesthetics and building materials used in built form. Alongside, this paper also looks at the different architectural lessons that can be learnt from the vernacular architecture of Kerala to be applied to modern architecture practiced in Kerala to make it more culturally and climatologically contextual to Kerala.

The architectural language of India versatile and still it is changing. While considering Kerala, it has an architectural style that has more depth and independence which was not influenced by other foreign and only evolved from the cultural, regional and functional aspects. This architectural fashion has been followed for a long period of time and its essence is persisting. The Kerala traditional architecture has its high importance as it satisfied all the concerns contextually, culturally and functionally. The more important form is naalukettu style which has been constructed for many years and many are still naalukettu which has its glory. One of the finest examples for the traditional naalukettu is Paliyam house for the women’s of Paliyam family. But as the time changes, people changes, cultural values changes, climate changes, needs and requirement changes so as a result of these architectural fashion should also be changes or evolves. But as the traditional architecture has its roots deep every evolution has taken its essence and put out architecture that is functionally appropriate. But due to the European influence in the recent eras, as people tend to follow the European culture they also tend to follow the architectural style, at that time it was contemporary style which took the Kerala architecture to a new era. The contemporary architecture was seen all over during those times and still seen. One of the examples of the contemporary architecture style is the skewed house by lijo –reni architects at Palakkad.as the time goes the contemporary architecture got many defaults as they are not fully satisfying the architecture of Kerala through various aspects.so many architects tend to combine both these architecture styles to produce a style which is much more functionally and esthetically pleasing. There are many examples that could be seen of this architecture style like the shikara residence by the wall makers, the canopy house by the scribble engine, the glass encased house by the stapati architects. But these styles does not identifies as Kerala. Kerala architecture tends to the crisis of identity crisis as in the present era. The identity of Kerala architecture is lost and it is not gaining back again as the architecture is still changing. This identity crisis is evident……

Traditional architectural buildings may be found in major parts of Kerala and have developed through time via a steady, persistent search for optimal design. Traditional building architecture in Kerala has long been revered for its reliance on all-natural, low-tech solutions to ensure a pleasant living space. This review paper is a comprehensive investigation of these traditional architectures of the Kerala system. The inside environment is the result of several factors, including the building's orientation, the layout of its interior areas, the existence of a courtyard, the use of readily accessible local materials, the application of any unusual construction techniques, etc. Studies were carried out to conduct a quantitative study by keeping track of the building's temperature and other factors related to occupant satisfaction. The present study shows that the ambient climate management technique used in traditional Kerala building is quite efficient and have better climatic response while maintaining a comfortable internal temperature throughout the year.

We need to study the rich Traditional Architecture of these identified regions. In this interesting search, the amazing facts regarding similarities between Kerala's traditional Nalukettu houses and traditional Manor houses of South Kanara need to be highlighted. The Nalukettu is the traditional style of architecture of Kerala where in an agrarian setting a house has a quadrangle in the centre. Originally the abode of the wealthy Brahmin and Nair families, this style of architecture has today become a status symbol among the well-to-do in Kerala. Nalukettu is evident in the traditional homes of the upper class homestead where customs and rituals were a part of life. The Manor houses are the dwellings of Bunt community. They are usually set amidst the agricultural fields. The houses have large courtyards to perform all the activities of farming. Usually the products from the field are got separated, cleaned and stored. They have a large cow shed at the rear of the house.

The main objective of the study is to know the development of kerala architecture through ages and how the religious architectures have influenced pilgrimage tourism. Kerala architecture has grown through different periods in which each period has contributes different style, pattern and looks. Religious monuments and buildings of historic importance have a great role in pilgrimage tourism. Through the project, the importance and attraction of these religious sites have been conveyed, fulfilling the second objective of the project The project is concluded by getting to a point that, the pilgrimage tourism has seen a better growth (derived from the annual report of, Department of tourism, Kerala) and there could be a faster growth by preserving these sites and providing with the needs and wants of the tourists.

Sustainable architecture is gaining its momentum in recent years. Traditional architecture is sustainable as it satisfies the climatic and cultural needs of the people. Traditional architectural form of a region depends upon the climate, occupation, religion, socio – economic status, education, materials available and the other socio – cultural factors. Tiruchendur has a unique culture which can be revealed in its regional architecture character. Their dwellings reflect occupant’s activities in their lives, while adapting to the warm and humid climate. Tiruchendur is famous for its Arupadai veedu temple and develops a Hindu community. It has a very unique Brahmin settlement and brings in regional identity to that place. The characteristics of these dwellings have remained unchanged until the 19th century. But at present many houses are left in a ruined state due to immigration to urban areas and also due to changes adopted in the years. New houses that are built now, seem unsustaina...

The cultural heritage of any country is seen best exposed in its architectural monuments. The ways in which buildings are designed, constructed and decorated speak not only the technical and artistic capabilities of the craftsmen, but also of the aspirations and visions of the preceptors, for whom the construction is only a medium for thematic expression. Kerala abounds with many such architectural monuments-prehistoric megalithic,

ANCIPS 2024

75th Annual National Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society 2024

Organised by Indian Psychiatric Society Cochin Local Branch

January 18-21, 2024 | Le Meridian, Kochi, Kerala

paper presentation kerala

Welcome to ANCIPS 2024

President's message.

It’s a great privilege and honour to scribble this invite in the 75th official year of the Indian Psychiatric Society for its 75th Annual Conference. It gives a great feeling when you think that the flow of time is full of platinum glitter, but this feeling is not a gift. We have earned it bit by bit by a small-stepped journey of education, research, and service to the ailing humanity. Our elders have toiled profusely to soften and meld the stony darkness ahead and hence, we must regard this platinum glitter as a source of inspiration to meet the challenges in years to come. Considering the past, present and future of this glorious journey we have chosen an apt theme for the 75th ANCIPS – PSYCHIATRIC CARE: PROBLEMS, PROGRESS & PROSPECTS.

It’s true that history is made by effort, but often chance factors play their role and add some more elements of surprise to the memorable moments. We cannot forget the deadly COVID-Crisis which has left its sore footprints on memories of humankind. It played spoilsport for many IPS events for nearly 2 years, and we were forced to have our first post-COVID fully in person ANCIPS in the temple city of Bhubaneswar, and now we are going to meet in God’s own country for the historic 75th ANCIPS.

Platinum Jubilee ANCIPS in India’s greenest land! We are going to make history against the backdrop of nature’s mystery. It’s a lifetime occasion for all of us to be part of it. Please join not only to celebrate this platinum occasion, but also to cherish the past, examine the present, and make promises and plans for the future. Rest assured; the scientific program will be befitting to the occasion and the organising team lead by Dr Joseph Varghese and Dr Anoop Vincent is highly enthusiastic to set a new benchmark of world-famous Kerala hospitality.

Please register as an early bird to avail the maximum discount and help the organising team serve you better.

How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation of Your Research Paper

  • 4 minute read

Table of Contents

A research paper presentation is often used at conferences and in other settings where you have an opportunity to share your research, and get feedback from your colleagues. Although it may seem as simple as summarizing your research and sharing your knowledge, successful research paper PowerPoint presentation examples show us that there’s a little bit more than that involved.

In this article, we’ll highlight how to make a PowerPoint presentation from a research paper, and what to include (as well as what NOT to include). We’ll also touch on how to present a research paper at a conference.

Purpose of a Research Paper Presentation

The purpose of presenting your paper at a conference or forum is different from the purpose of conducting your research and writing up your paper. In this setting, you want to highlight your work instead of including every detail of your research. Likewise, a presentation is an excellent opportunity to get direct feedback from your colleagues in the field. But, perhaps the main reason for presenting your research is to spark interest in your work, and entice the audience to read your research paper.

So, yes, your presentation should summarize your work, but it needs to do so in a way that encourages your audience to seek out your work, and share their interest in your work with others. It’s not enough just to present your research dryly, to get information out there. More important is to encourage engagement with you, your research, and your work.

Tips for Creating Your Research Paper Presentation

In addition to basic PowerPoint presentation recommendations, which we’ll cover later in this article, think about the following when you’re putting together your research paper presentation:

  • Know your audience : First and foremost, who are you presenting to? Students? Experts in your field? Potential funders? Non-experts? The truth is that your audience will probably have a bit of a mix of all of the above. So, make sure you keep that in mind as you prepare your presentation.

Know more about: Discover the Target Audience .

  • Your audience is human : In other words, they may be tired, they might be wondering why they’re there, and they will, at some point, be tuning out. So, take steps to help them stay interested in your presentation. You can do that by utilizing effective visuals, summarize your conclusions early, and keep your research easy to understand.
  • Running outline : It’s not IF your audience will drift off, or get lost…it’s WHEN. Keep a running outline, either within the presentation or via a handout. Use visual and verbal clues to highlight where you are in the presentation.
  • Where does your research fit in? You should know of work related to your research, but you don’t have to cite every example. In addition, keep references in your presentation to the end, or in the handout. Your audience is there to hear about your work.
  • Plan B : Anticipate possible questions for your presentation, and prepare slides that answer those specific questions in more detail, but have them at the END of your presentation. You can then jump to them, IF needed.

What Makes a PowerPoint Presentation Effective?

You’ve probably attended a presentation where the presenter reads off of their PowerPoint outline, word for word. Or where the presentation is busy, disorganized, or includes too much information. Here are some simple tips for creating an effective PowerPoint Presentation.

  • Less is more: You want to give enough information to make your audience want to read your paper. So include details, but not too many, and avoid too many formulas and technical jargon.
  • Clean and professional : Avoid excessive colors, distracting backgrounds, font changes, animations, and too many words. Instead of whole paragraphs, bullet points with just a few words to summarize and highlight are best.
  • Know your real-estate : Each slide has a limited amount of space. Use it wisely. Typically one, no more than two points per slide. Balance each slide visually. Utilize illustrations when needed; not extraneously.
  • Keep things visual : Remember, a PowerPoint presentation is a powerful tool to present things visually. Use visual graphs over tables and scientific illustrations over long text. Keep your visuals clean and professional, just like any text you include in your presentation.

Know more about our Scientific Illustrations Services .

Another key to an effective presentation is to practice, practice, and then practice some more. When you’re done with your PowerPoint, go through it with friends and colleagues to see if you need to add (or delete excessive) information. Double and triple check for typos and errors. Know the presentation inside and out, so when you’re in front of your audience, you’ll feel confident and comfortable.

How to Present a Research Paper

If your PowerPoint presentation is solid, and you’ve practiced your presentation, that’s half the battle. Follow the basic advice to keep your audience engaged and interested by making eye contact, encouraging questions, and presenting your information with enthusiasm.

We encourage you to read our articles on how to present a scientific journal article and tips on giving good scientific presentations .

Best practices when creating a presentation from a Word document

Leverage word styles to help copilot understand the structure of your document.

By using Styles in Word to organize your document, Copilot will better understand your document structure and how to break it up into slides of a presentation. Structure your content under Titles and Headers when appropriate and Copilot will do its best to generate a presentation for you.

Include images that are relevant to your presentation

When creating a presentation, Copilot will try to incorporate the images in your Word document. If you have images that you would like to be brought over to your presentation, be sure to include them in your Word document.

Start with your organization’s template

If your organization uses a standard template, start with this file before creating a presentation with Copilot. Starting with a template will let Copilot know that you would like to retain the presentation’s theme and design. Copilot will use existing layouts to build a presentation for you. Tip:  Copilot works best with Word documents that are less than 24 MB.
