Students are learning to create PowerPoint (or the Apple equivalent, Keynote presentations) in early elementary school.  Here are some simple PowerPoint themes to help you and your students get started!

PowerPoints are a ‘slide show’ on a computer. Each slide is like a page in a book.  Students can write their ‘story’, add pictures, sound effects, and videos.

Initially, have the student create a ‘paper’ draft of his/her first PowerPoint Presentation (PPT) to plan what the presentation will look like.  Depending the student’s age or abilities, the student can write an outline for each slide or write the full text for each slide.

Class Project

The classroom teacher should walk the class through step-by-step instructions on how to create PPT slides and if desired, how to add features.  Consider creating a class PPT presentation; divide the students into groups and have each group create a slide or several slides that will be combined for the class presentation.  For younger students, the class PPT could be an alphabet book.  Each slide would be a letter in the alphabet, with a picture that is associated with the letter.  Add a fun sound clip too!  Example:  The ‘A’ slide could have a picture of an airplane, the word ‘airplane’ (or sentence about an airplane) and a sound clip of an airplane flying.  Students can draw the picture or find a picture on-line.  The teacher can demonstrate creating the first slide or two, then the student groups can create the rest of the slide deck.

Another class project could be to create a PPT about their class.  This PPT could include a slide for each student and staff (take digital pictures of the class/staff), the classes’ schedule, class rules, etc.  This PPT can be shown to parents during Open House and each student can keep a copy of the PPT.

All About Me

If the students are learning to write, for homework, ask the parents to help the student answer these questions:

  • Slide 1:  Name
  • Slide 2: My family
  • Slide 3: My pet(s)
  • Slide 4: I like to _____.
  • Slide 5: I like to eat _____.
  • Slide 6: I like the color ____.
  • Slide 7: My favorite thing about school is ____.

Students can bring in pictures, send in digital pictures or draw pictures. For students who are working on writing/story skills, the classroom teacher may determine how many slides are required and/or the minimum length of text per slide.

Favorite Pet (Day as your pet)

  • Slide 1: Title, author, illustrator
  • Slide 2: Main characters (intro your pet)
  • Slide 3: Setting
  • Slide 4: Favorite activity #1
  • Slide 5: Favorite activity #2
  • Slide 6: Favorite activity #3
  • Slide 7: “My favorite part”

School Day

  • Slide 2: Main characters (teachers, classmates)
  • Slide 3: Setting (Mrs. B’s classroom)
  • Slide 7: Ending
  • Slide 8: “My favorite part”

Book Report

  • Slide 2: Main characters
  • Slide 4: Important event #1
  • Slide 5: Important event #2
  • Slide 6: Important event #3

Create a PPT about your student’s eye condition, IEP modifications, preferences, technology that the student uses, etc.  For ideas, see the post on Samantha: Self-Advocating Transition to Middle School Video .  A video like Samantha’s can be embedded into the PPT presentation or the video content can be written and incorporated into the slide deck.  For additional Advocacy ideas, see the post on College Preparedness #3: How to Explain Accommodations .

This Advocacy PPT can be shared with the IEP team, current staff and next year’s staff (at the end/beginning of the school year)

How to create an Accessible PPT

Create a PPT to share with Teachers (or peers) about how to make an accessible PPT or Word Document.

Teacher Hints

  • Once the students have prepared their presentations, discuss how to include accessibility features, such as adding alt text to images, so that the PPT is accessible to everyone.
  • Have each student write the content (text) of each slide before adding pictures, animations, sounds, and other features.
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired Hint: Pre-teach how to create PowerPoint slides, if your student would benefit from one-on-one instruction.
  • For students who use a screen reader, be sure that pictures are named appropriately to identify the picture (vs. a random number).  Once the image is placed into the PPT, be sure to include Alt Text descriptions.
  • For information on how to create an accessible PPT, see the attached Creating Accessible PowerPoint and/or go to the post, 7 Ways to Create an Accessible PowerPoint.

Find out how a high school teacher like Jamie Barkin uses Piktochart to improve learning in the classroom for her students.

Pro tip: make your presentation as interactive as possible. Students have an attention span of two to three minutes per year of age. To keep minds from wandering off, include some interactive games or activities in the lesson. For example, if you conducted a lesson on the respiratory system, you could ask them to practice breathing techniques.

Maintain eye contact with your students, and you’ll get instant feedback on how interested they are in the interactive presentation.

Make School Presentation Visuals Without the Hassle of Making Them From Scratch

School presentations, when done right, can help teachers engage their classes and improve students’ education effectively by presenting information using the right presentation topic.

If you’re pressed for time and resources to make your school presentation visuals , choose a template from Piktochart’s template gallery . Aside from the easy customization options, you can also print and download these templates to your preferred format.

Piktochart also professional templates to create infographics , posters , brochures , reports , and more.

Creating school-focused, engaging, and interactive presentations can be tedious at first, but with a little bit of research and Piktochart’s handy templates, you’re going to do a great job!

12 Interactive PowerPoint Activities Your Students will Love

12 Interactive PowerPoint Activities Your Students will Love

At Slides with Friends, we're all about trying to make your life as a teacher a little bit easier. We want to provide as many tools, tips, and as much support as possible. That's why we share on topics like Review Games , Student Wellness Activities , and Tools for Measuring Student Engagement .

While we usually focus on how you can use Slides with Friends specifically, we want to bring you something a little different this time. We've compiled 12 of our favorite interactive PowerPoint activities you can use with your students. All of the activities are designed to engage your students in ways they'll love. Even better, these activities let you use a tool you're probably already familiar with.

And read to the end for an exciting new announcement!

Annotated Images

Annotated images let you teach history (or literature! or geography!) using detailed annotated images from your latest lesson. We're big fans of using visuals in the classroom. And with good reason! A study released by the Journal of Education and Practice found visual information is mapped better in students' minds across multiple types of thinking skills. By introducing more visuals to a lesson plan, and using tools like PowerPoint, lessons are more likely to be remembered.

powerpoint presentation for primary students

You can introduce annotated images on PowerPoint by picking out relevant images and adding captions or labels to them and presenting them as you teach. You can add descriptions, draw arrows, or points of interest on the image.

Check out this fun example from Ditch That Textbook .

powerpoint presentation for primary students

Even better, provide a few unique images of the lesson you just presented and have the students create their own annotations. Then, as a class, have each student present their image in PowerPoint.

Photos as Story Prompts

More visual learning! Using photos as storytelling prompts can be a great way to spark your student's creativity! PowerPoint is an ideal platform to display the photos, as it provides you the flexibility and versatility to show one photo at a time in case you want the students to focus exclusively on that image.

Simply ask them to write a story based on the photo in 1-3 sentences, and compare answers afterward. Encouraging different interpretations of a single image also helps foster critical thinking skills and encourages students to use their own perspectives when expressing their ideas.

Interactive Maps

Interactive maps are a fantastic way for students to learn about their world without leaving the classroom! And one of the easiest ways to show off these maps is through PowerPoint. Plus, PowerPoint makes adding hyperlinks to specific places (like pins), so you can click through areas of interest without having to open up a separate browser page.

If you're looking for a simple tutorial on how to create a lesson-based interactive map, check out this one from eLearning Industry . For more exploratory maps, check out the tutorial below (which includes the free template!).

Battleship Review Game

We love a good game here at Slides with Friends, so it shouldn't be a surprise to see so many options on this list. However, before doing research for this article, we had no idea Battleship could be played on PowerPoint!

In the template below, you can add words and to reveal the space beneath the words, students have to:

- Conjugate the Verb

- Use the Word in a Sentence

- Define the Word

Or one of any fun combinations.

We love this idea for language classes especially, but can also be used for vocabulary in any subject.

You can check out the whole presentation here.

Crossword Puzzle

Crossword puzzles are a timeless and popular way of testing knowledge and keeping minds alert. They can be used in the classroom to reinforce concepts and skills related to any subject, making them a great teaching tool. Crosswords can help students learn new vocabulary words, polish their grammar, understand history or science topics better, or firm up mathematics concepts.

And an easy way to do a crossword in the classroom is by using PowerPoint. You simply need to create a blank and a filled puzzle on PowerPoint and then fill it out with your class.

Check out this step-by-step guide on the best way to quickly create a crossword puzzle in PowerPoint.

Tests and quizzes are absolutely no fun, so if you can find an easy way to quiz your students in a fun way, that's a win-win! One of our favorite ways to do this is by creating a quiz show on PowerPoint.

By using those hyperlinks we mentioned above, you can easily create your own questions, assign point values, and include sound effects (or music!) to make your students feel like they're actually in a game show!

This 6 Steps to Create a Multiple Choice Quiz is a great way to start designing your next PowerPoint quiz. If you're looking for multiple ways to create a quiz show for your students, check out the detailed tutorial below .

Video Gallery

We've talked quite a bit about visuals here, not just because PowerPoint is a great tool for visuals, but because visuals are so extremely helpful in the classroom.

One way to incorporate visual activities into your classes with PowerPoint is by creating video galleries. This is especially useful if you have limited access to videos and need to play them in a certain order.

You can create a video gallery presentation by manually inserting the clips into slides or creating a series of hyperlinks to take the class through certain processes. You can also add captions, notes, and questions for further discussion.

Scavenger Hunt

A fun activity to incorporate in your classroom through the power of PowerPoint is a review scavenger hunt.

Scavenger hunts can be an engaging way to go over the material and test knowledge at the beginning or end of a unit. PowerPoint is a great tool to use when designing a scavenger hunt if you are working with students online. With the tool, you can hide clues in images, ask questions that are linked to hyperlinks, and even add video clips as hints.

Scavenger hunts also offer quite a bit of versatility in the classroom. You can have students work individually or in groups, depending on your goals for the lesson.

You can reference our Virtual Scavenger Hunt guide, which includes several hunt lists, for ideas on what to bring to your students.

Choose Your Own Adventure

PowerPoint slides can also be used to create engaging interactive experiences. PowerPoint's slide-linking feature allows you to jump between slides with the click of a button, providing users with their own “Choose Your Own Adventure”-style gaming experience. As a result, you can create an interactive story with a different ending each and every time.

While this activity will take quite a bit of upfront work, once you have it done, you can use it for countless classes.

We highly recommend this tutorial by The Training Lady on how to plan out your next PowerPoint adventure!

powerpoint presentation for primary students

Picture Reveal

Picture Reveal is a great PowerPoint activity that encourages students to think critically. In this activity, you can present an obscured picture and provides clues as to what it could be. Students must then utilize their knowledge and logic skills to work out what the picture is by eliminating incorrect answers based on the clues provided until they eventually get the correct answer.

Picture reveals are a great way to review material from previous lessons or current topics. They can also act as an introduction to a new lesson. Plus, we can't stress this enough, visuals!

Word Search

Word search games are a great way to review vocabulary and help students learn new words. Using PowerPoint, you can create custom word searches by entering the target vocabulary words in a grid. Then draw lines connecting each letter to form words! You can even add visuals that correspond with the theme of your word search for an extra challenge.

Word search games are perfect for when you have some leftover time during class or if you want to review material from earlier units. A PowerPoint word search is also great for helping students recognize spelling patterns in unfamiliar words and promoting active learning as they look for the hidden words in the puzzle.

Student Presentation

powerpoint presentation for primary students

One of the best ways to get your students engaged in the classroom is to have them lead the show. And PowerPoint is such an awesome tool for students to present their own material.

With a little guidance, you can have older students create mini-presentations about topics they've studied in class or even on their own. Not only will this allow you to assess what they've retained from studying, but it also allows your students to practice public speaking skills and become more comfortable with online presentations - essential in today's digital world!

With PowerPoint, you can easily turn any student project into an engaging presentation everyone will enjoy.

Use Slides with Friends for Your PowerPoint Activities

PowerPoint has been a vital tool in the teacher toolbox for decades. There are so many fantastic ways to use PowerPoint to engage and interact with your classroom.

Slides with Friends is excited to announce a new feature for our slide decks - A PowerPoint upload!

Now you can create your slides in an already-known program, or use slide shows you've already made, and with a click of a button upload them to Slides with Friends!

Free Powerpoint presentations for teachers

As a teacher, PowerPoint can be a valuable tool for creating engaging presentations that help students understand complex information. To use PowerPoint effectively, here are some tips:

1. Before creating your presentation, plan out the key points you want to cover and organize your content in a logical manner. Define your learning objectives and consider your students’ needs and backgrounds.

2.Keep your slides simple and avoid excess text. Use bullet points or key phrases instead of lengthy sentences. Remember, your slides should support your teaching and not replace your verbal explanations.

3.Incorporate relevant visuals such as images, charts, graphs, and diagrams to enhance understanding and engagement. Visuals can help illustrate complex concepts, make information more memorable, and cater to different learning styles.

Maintain consistency: Use a consistent design throughout your presentation. Choose a clean and professional template and stick to a limited color palette and font selection. Consistency creates a cohesive visual experience for your students.

Use animations and transitions sparingly: While animations and transitions can add visual interest, too many or excessive effects can be distracting. Use them judiciously to emphasize key points or to reveal information gradually.

Practice good slide structure: Divide your content into sections or topics and use clear headings. Number your slides or include a progress indicator to help students track their progress during the presentation.

Engage your audience: Incorporate interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, or discussion questions into your slides. This helps to promote active participation and ensures students remain attentive and engaged.

Provide clear navigation: Use hyperlinks or navigation buttons to enable easy movement between slides or sections. This allows you to adapt to the flow of the class, respond to questions, or revisit previous content as needed.

Incorporate multimedia: PowerPoint supports audio and video files, so consider including relevant multimedia content to enhance understanding. For example, you can embed videos, audio clips, or simulations that demonstrate concepts or provide real-life examples.

Practice and time your presentation: Rehearse your presentation beforehand to ensure a smooth flow and familiarize yourself with the content. Pay attention to your pace and timing to ensure you cover all the material within the allocated time.

Remember, PowerPoint should complement your teaching, not replace it. Use it as a tool to enhance your lessons and engage your students effectively.

Coffs Harbour primary school students make rare discovery of pink mangrove lobster

feel good Coffs Harbour primary school students make rare discovery of pink mangrove lobster

A small crustacean on the back of a person's hand.

Students on an excursion in northern NSW have come across a pink mangrove lobster.

The creatures are seldom seen and there are only about 40 sightings on record.

What's next?

An Australian Museum Research Institute professor says the discovery shows the environment is in "good shape" and encourages people to explore their surroundings.

A school excursion to a northern New South Wales coastal estuary has generated unexpected excitement after the students discovered a marine creature rarely seen above ground.

The year 6 students from St Augustine's School at Coffs Harbour were paddleboarding along Boambee Creek Estuary when they ventured among the mangroves to explore.

It was then that one of them, Mimka, sighted a crustacean unlike any she had seen before.

"It was like a hot pink, about the size of a yabby, a bit bigger," she said.

"It was sitting on top of the sand bank near the mangroves.

"I've been yabby pumping with my dad before and I knew it was something more special than a yabby."

Two smiling primary school girls sit across a desk from their male teacher.

Teacher, Nick Lambert said he knew they had found something rare and identified the creature as a pink mangrove lobster.

"I had a friend send me a photo of one a couple of years ago … so I have been on the lookout for one of these," he said.

"There's only been about 40 recorded sightings of pink mangrove lobsters in Australia … they are tunnel dwellers, and rarely seen above land."

"I didn't scream as loudly as the kids, but I think I was definitely more excited as I had an idea of how special it was."

'Most people will never see one'

Mr Lambert sent a photo of the discovery to the senior principal research scientist at the Sydney-based Australian Museum Research Institute, Shane Ahyong.

"When I saw it, I thought, 'Fantastic — it's really nice someone has found one,' because most people will never see one in their life," he said.

"They can have a metallic sheen … they are a gorgeous animal, so it was a really lucky find for the school group."

Professor Ahyong said the 40 recorded sightings of pink mangrove lobsters in Australia were listed in the Atlas of Living Australia, an online database of records from different museums.

"The pink mud lobster is a small creature, up to eight to 10 centimetres long and they burrow in the mangrove swamps and mangrove mud," he said.

"We call them a lobster, but they aren't related to lobsters — they are more closely related to yabbies.

"They occur from south-eastern Queensland down to Western Port Bay in Victoria, but they seem to be most common in NSW, from the North Coast down to Sydney."

Professor Ahyong said the discovery of a pink mangrove lobster was very encouraging and an indication that the surrounding environment was healthy.

"They rely on a high-quality habitat to survive, so if they are around that's a good sign and indicates the habitat is in good shape," he said.

Professor Ahyong said he encouraged people to explore their local environments.

"I love it when people find these things because it tells them there's a whole lot more out there than they think," he said.

"It's great to encourage exploration and inquisitiveness and appreciate the natural values of what we have in our areas."

BML Summer Students Share Their Science Through Short Films

  • August 06, 2024

Coastal Marine Research (BIS 124) was taught at Bodega Marine Laboratory during Summer Session I by Professor Eric Sanford. Undergraduate students in this course received training in all aspects of the research process and then put their new skills to work during independent research projects conducted in teams of two. Students shared their research findings via a scientific talk delivered at the BML Student Research Symposium on August 1, and a final paper archived in the Cadet Hand Library at BML.

Students also developed science communication skills for engaging non-scientists. Students produced 3-minute films to highlight their research for general audiences and premiered their work at a Film Festival at Bodega Marine Lab on July 30.  These films are now available to watch below.

Story content, sacramento state to begin construction on new student housing building that will provide affordable beds for undergraduates.

powerpoint presentation for primary students

By Daniel Wilson

August 06, 2024

Sacramento State is building another hive to house its Hornets.

Construction will begin this October on Student Housing III, a five-story, 97,100 square-foot facility that will accomodate 335 students. The building is scheduled to open in June 2026.

The portion of Parking Lot 2 in front of Riverview Hall where Student Housing III will be located.

California’s Higher Education Student Housing Grant Program (HESHGP), which the University received for 2023-24, will cover $41 million of the $69 million project. The program helps colleges and universities provide affordable student housing and beds, at no more than 30-50% of the area median income.

“We are excited to be entrusted as a campus to receive funding for the project to serve California’s Affordable Housing needs,” said Felicia Linstrot Johnson, associate vice president for Facilities Management .

The grant program adds 285 affordable housing beds to campus. Students who qualify for affordable beds may be housed across any of the University's eight residence halls.

The HESHGP also aligns with the University’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals, providing affordable housing for lower-income students and improving enrollment and retention by lowering the overall cost of attending college.

At its July meeting, the California State University Board of Trustees approved the building’s design as well as additional funding, which will include CSU revenue bonds and ongoing housing revenues and campus housing program reserves.

The 335 new beds join the existing 2,100 on campus, which accommodate 7% of the student population. As of May, 600 upper division students were on the housing waiting list. The new building will help alleviate that need but can also house eligible first-year students if needed.

“Having more students living in the residence halls will help us retain students,” said Samuel Jones, executive director for University Housing Services. “Residence hall students typically have higher GPAs, and the campus will be more vibrant with additional students living on campus.”

Student Housing III will be located at the northeast corner of campus in a section of Parking Lot 2 near Riverview Hall and Desmond Hall. The facility will serve as a gateway to the North Village student housing complex, with a pedestrian walkway from the nearby crosswalk.

Additional parking spots in Parking Structure 5 will be allocated for residential students to offset the reduction of some spots from Lot 2. Additionally, schedule adjustments may be made for future Move-in Day events to accommodate traffic that typically utilizes that section of the parking area.

The building is designed by Gensler and it will be built by West Sacramento-based Brown Construction , whose president and CEO, Ron Brown, is a Sac State Construction Management alum.

The facility’s ground floor will include a recreation room, academic lounge, conference and classroom spaces, gender-inclusive restrooms, a mail room, and support staff apartments. In addition to student housing rooms, which include 164 single, 75 double and 7 triple occupant units, the upper four floors will each include a study area, private telehealth or study rooms, a student computer and TV lounge, and a kitchenette.

The building’s exterior will feature plenty of shade trees, study space, room for student programs and recreation, a barbecue area, and outdoor gaming equipment such as ping-pong tables.

Sustainability efforts include a wide use of natural light and ventilation, low-emission glazed windows, energy efficient interior and exterior lighting with daytime controls and occupancy sensors. Charging stations for e-bikes and scooters will also be available.

“The project is going well. Brown and Gensler have been easy to work with and have been able to meet our program needs in this hall,” Jones said. “This building will be the focal point for all students to have access to the first-floor amenities such as the Academic Study Hub, which includes computers, print smart stations and project space, and the recreational lounge.”

Colorado schools have AI roadmap to guide students and teachers into brave new world

powerpoint presentation for primary students

When schools open their doors in a few weeks, educators, administrators, parents and students will have a new guide for incorporating artificial intelligence in the classroom.

The Colorado Education Initiative released its roadmap Tuesday as a set of guidelines to help integrate AI into education policy and curriculums. The group hopes its guide will help students gain a competitive edge in the evolving technology. Colorado is believed to be the 20th state to roll out an AI roadmap for educators.

“We can use AI for great things, and we've got a responsibility to help our kids be ready,” said Karen Quanbeck, vice president of state partnerships for the Colorado Education Initiative, a nonprofit that collaborates and innovates with schools, districts and the state. “But at the same time, we've got to step into this cautiously.”

CEI brought together more than 100 people — including teachers, students and tech experts, both rural and urban — to create the roadmap.

Local school districts set policies in Colorado, so they define their own rules about new teaching or learning technology.

“We wanted something that was practical, not prescriptive, but usable for especially those districts that don't have the infrastructure,” she said.

The roadmap focuses on three main areas: teaching and learning, advancing equity, and developing policy for transparent and ethical use.

Teaching and learning

The report said it’s crucial for students to grasp concepts like AI “hallucinations,” data privacy and the potential for bias in AI. They also need to know how to use AI technology effectively, ethically and safely.

“Even in entry level jobs we’re seeing that companies are expecting people to be able to understand and implement AI … It’s becoming so critical that schools are teaching it for the future success of students,” said one student in the report who sat on a working group.

The roadmap provides examples of how AI can support students. Those uses include tailoring curriculum to match a student’s learning pace, serving as a real-time tutor, helping students bring imaginative ideas to life, building code, developing writing or math skills, exploring careers and correcting grammar for language learners.

For educators, the roadmap said AI has the potential to increase the amount of time available to work directly with students and reduce time spent on activities that could be automated, such as administrative work, grading, differentiating lesson plans, and data analysis. It can generate individualized feedback on student assignments, for example.

The roadmap also shares AI’s shortcomings, such as its limited ability to understand emotional and cultural nuances or perform complex decision-making. It also cannot stand in for peer-to-peer exchange.

Advancing equity

The roadmap recommends that schools engage families and students, particularly English language learners and rural families, to ensure that all students can learn about AI. It recommends giving all students the opportunity to not just complete passive assignments, but to analyze, build, produce and create using AI.

“We want to make sure that kids have opportunities not just to be consumers of AI but to also create with AI,” said Quanbeck.

Right now, Colorado doesn’t analyze disparities in access to classroom technology across different regions and schools. The roadmap calls on the state to conduct audits to identify inequities and then provide equipment and software to bridge the gaps.

Some teachers are already creating lessons to educate students about how AI can perpetuate biases, for example, in who gets loans or how it’s used to distort elections.

Transparent and ethical use

Many Colorado districts already have existing policies on data privacy and ethics that will suffice, said Quanbeck. But the roadmap prioritizes “fluid guidance” over rigid policies because AI is changing so quickly. It encourages experimentation and exploration for teachers and students while maintaining privacy safeguards. And it advises transparency in how data is used, how it will be stored and how to navigate data sharing practices with subcontractors.

The roadmap concludes with next steps for school districts, like creating a task force on AI and updating conduct and discipline policies, as well as for statewide organizations. The roadmap also includes many resources to help districts develop policies but also help teachers with lesson plans and boosting their knowledge.

A pilot program called Elevate AI is launching in eight districts. CEI received a $2.9 million state grant and support from the Gill Foundation to run the pilot. What the schools learn from that program will be used to revise the roadmap.
