Today, we are making this year’s annual feature update Windows 11, version 24H2 (Build 26100.712) available in the Release Preview Channel for customers to preview ahead of general availability later this calendar year.

Windows 11, version 24H2* includes a range of new features such as the HDR background support, energy saver, Sudo for Windows , Rust in the Windows kernel, support for Wi-Fi 7, voice clarity and more. It also includes many improvements across Windows. For example, we are introducing a scrollable view of the quick settings flyout from the taskbar, the ability to create 7-zip and TAR archives in File Explorer (in addition to ZIP), and improvements for connecting Bluetooth® Low Energy Audio devices. We will be sharing more details in the coming months on many of the new features and improvements included as part of Windows 11, version 24H2 leading up to general availability. Please note that the new AI features such as Recall announced earlier this week will not be available on your PC after installing this update today as they require a Copilot+ PC. As part of this update, we’re also evolving the Copilot** experience on Windows as an app that will be pinned to the taskbar. This model also allows Microsoft to more agilely develop and optimize the experience based on user feedback. Windows Insiders in the Release Preview Channel can install Windows 11, version 24H2 via our “seeker” experience in Windows Update. This means if you are an Insider currently in the Release Preview Channel on a PC that meets the Windows 11  hardware requirements , you can go to Settings and Windows Update and choose to download and install Windows 11, version 24H2 if you want. Once you update your PC to Windows 11, version 24H2, you will continue to automatically receive new servicing updates through Windows Update (the typical monthly update process). This month, Tammy Swierczynski and other parents in the Sun Prairie School District near Madison criticized their school board for purchasing the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) reading curriculum for $1.2 million. Swierczynski, who’s also a board member with the Wisconsin Indian Education Association, was relieved when the Sun Prairie School Board recently agreed to contract with her and the association to review the curriculum for any harmful content, and offer revisions.

Amplify representatives said the current edition of their curriculum is free of such biased content. Company representatives said it was the first edition of the curriculum, made by a different company, that received condemnation from Indigenous groups after it was used in other parts of the country. This second edition rights the wrongs.

“CKLA 2 nd Edition is not Eurocentric,” the company said in a statement. “In fact, the program works hard to expose students to cultures from across the globe … All our content is research-based and reviewed by a diverse group of individuals. … We are committed to engaging with all stakeholders to ensure we’re presenting historically accurate information and diverse perspectives.”

Erickson is skeptical. She said it was, in fact, the second edition that she reviewed, and found the inaccuracies and stereotypes.

Erickson is a school board member for the Cedarburg School District, which had approved and is using the Amplify CKLA reading curriculum as is.

“That is the version that teachers in my district have complained to me about and the same version Sun Prairie is fixing,” she said, referring to the agreement to have the Wisconsin Indian Education Association review the material.

She said using the curriculum is not a good look for Cedarburg, which in October became the first school district to be ruled “not in compliance” with Act 31 by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Act 31 is the mandate that public schools in Wisconsin must teach accurate education about Indigenous peoples. The mandate was derived from the so-called “Walleye Wars” of the 1980s in which northern Wisconsin saw often racist and violent protests against Ojibwe people practicing their treaty rights to harvest walleye.

Erickson said she hopes the revised edition of the Amplify CKLA curriculum her association is working on for Sun Prairie will become the model for other school districts in Wisconsin to use.

But they don’t have to use it.

That's because a separate education measure, Act 20, has no requirement for representation and diversity.

Act 20 was meant to improve reading among young students, and includes criteria based on scientific research shown to improve reading scores. It prohibits “three-cueing” teaching that asks students to look for clues in pictures when they’re trying to read.

The Amplify CKLA curriculum was approved by the Department of Public Instruction’s Early Literacy Curriculum Council based on criteria that includes phonics, oral language development, vocabulary building and instruction in writing.

A criterion for including representation and diversity was originally included in Act 20, but was removed by Republican lawmakers.

State education officials said local school boards can still choose to include representation and diversity as a criterion for their curriculums, like Sun Prairie is doing.

Erickson said the methodology of the Amplify CKLA curriculum is great and has been shown to improve reading, but it’s some of the content that needs to be addressed to be compliance with Act 31.

A New Dawn for US-African Cooperation?

Although closer US-African cooperation would yield significant, mutually beneficial results, a lack of investment, depreciating currencies, and high interest rates are choking African economies and derailing critical initiatives like green industrialization. The United States can do three things to help overcome these challenges.

BASEL – Kenyan President William Ruto ’s recent visit to the United States could well mark a turning point in US-Africa relations. Closer cooperation would yield mutually beneficial results on issues ranging from economic growth to planetary sustainability. Yet a lack of investment, depreciating currencies, and high interest rates are choking African economies and derailing critical initiatives like green industrialization.

It is in America’s own interest to support Africa in overcoming these hurdles. Many African countries are perpetually in a state of economic or environmental distress. Because international borrowing costs remain high – owing partly to elevated interest rates in the US – governments have had to raid their development budgets to service their debts. According to the Finance for Development Lab (FDL), at least 20 low- and lower-middle-income countries globally will face difficulties in rolling over $600 billion in external public debt that comes due between now and 2026.

Moreover, both Africa and the US are increasingly suffering from the effects of climate change. The recent floods in Kenya were a tragic illustration of the need for rapid decarbonization and investment in climate-resilient infrastructure. Similarly, the tornados that recently upended people’s lives in Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas may augur the country’s worst tornado season in decades.

PlayStation Plus subscribers’ free Essential games for the month of June are SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake , AEW Fight Forever , and Streets of Rage 4 , Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Tuesday . Players can download the trio of games beginning Tuesday, June 4.

Sony revealed June 2024’s monthly free PS Plus games as part of a larger Days of Play announcement, in which the company promised deals on PlayStation hardware and games, as well as bonus titles for the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog. Days of Play 2024 runs from May 29 through June 12.

June’s free monthly games for PS Plus Essential kick off with SpongeBob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake , the platformer adventure game in which SpongeBob and Patrick get wish-granting — and reality-shredding — Mermaid’s Tears. The duo don a variety of themed costumes to conquer medieval, Western, and prehistoric worlds.

AEW Fight Forever is the wrestling arcade-style game that lets players mix it up as All Elite Wrestling superstars or play as their own customized wrestler. It’s the only place to get your Exploding Barbed Wire Death match fix on PlayStation this summer.

Streets of Rage 4 is the must-play side-scrolling belt-action beat-’em-up from Sega and developers LizardCube, Guard Crush, and DotEmu. Streets of Rage 4 revitalized the Genesis-era franchise with the return of fan-favorite characters, great music, and combo-focused gameplay. As Polygon editor in chief Chris Plante said in his review of the 2020 game , “ Streets of Rage 4 is everything I could have wanted from a true Streets of Rage sequel. I’m satiated.”

PlayStation Plus subscribers can still pick up May’s PlayStation Plus Essential games — EA Sports FC 24 , Ghostrunner 2 , Tunic , and Destiny 2: Lightfall — through June 3. (Actually, soccer fans can grab EA’s FIFA replacement through June 18.)

SIE is also filling up the PS Plus Game Catalog, accessible to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers, with a bunch of new games. On the PlayStation VR 2 catalog, Premium-level subscribers will get access to the following games, starting June 6:

• Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord
• Walkabout Mini Golf
• Synth Riders
• Before Your Eyes
• The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapters 1 & 2

Premium subscribers will also get access to the following PlayStation 2 games:

• Star Wars: The Clone Wars
• Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

While Extra- and Premium-tier subscribers will get access to the following games in the coming weeks:

• Dredge (PS4, PS5) — available May 29
• Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 (PS4) — available May 31
• Cricket 24 (PS4, PS5) — available June 5
• Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition (PS4, PS5) — available June 7

PlayStation Plus Essential is the lowest tier available in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s subscription service. It offers online multiplayer access, a monthly assortment of free PS4 and PS5 games, cloud storage, and discounts on PlayStation Store purchases. PlayStation Plus Essential costs $79.99 annually, $24.99 for a three-month subscription, or $9.99 monthly — a price that went up last August .
