  • Mitchell's Satyr

zoo presentation school

The prairie fens of southern Michigan are a stronghold for the Endangered Mitchell’s Satyr butterfly. We are working with Michigan State University, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Michigan Natural Features Inventory, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center to develp to propagate this rare butterfly. Offspring reared in the program may be used to supplement wild Mitchell’s Satyr populations.

  • Freshwater Mussels

zoo presentation school

Freshwater Mussels are one of the most fastenating groups of animals. Unfortunately they are also one of the most imperiled groups on animals with more than 70% of North American species listed as Threatened or Endangered. Our own Grand River is home to an impressive 32 different species, 19 of which are listed. The John Ball Zoo is working with scientists at Grand Valley State University to evaluate Grand River Mussel populations. During the 2023 field season, the team documented over 1,000 individuals from 27 different species. This includes the Endangered Snuffbox Mussel.

  • Habitat Hero

Community Science

zoo presentation school

The Habitat Hero program is focused on creating better urban pollinator habitat by giving away native plants to west Michigan community members. By giving away native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, we are inviting community members to provide crucial nectar sources for pollinators as well as become more involved in pollinator conservation in their own yards and gardens.

  • Kestrel Nest Box Monitoring

zoo presentation school

American Kestrels are one of North America’s most abundant raptors, but their populations have been steadily declining since the mid 1960’s. This year we have begun participating in the American Kestrel Partnership, run by the Peregrine Fund, to monitor local kestrel nest boxes and help better understand Kestrel population trends and biology.

  • Grand River Sucker Monitoring

zoo presentation school

Suckers are a very important, and often overlooked, group of migratory fish that inhabit the Grand River. Every spring they migrate upriver from Lake Michigan to spawn in tributaries of the Grand River. We are joining a project started by the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago to determine how changes in temperature and flow of the streams impact the spawning behavior of the suckers.

  • Turtle Road Mortality Surveys

zoo presentation school

One of the major threats to turtle populations is mortality associated with roads and vehicles. We have a team of trained volunteers who survey predetermined road crossing sites and report the number of turtles they find at these locations. We plan to use the data to assist in conservation decision-making regarding roads and turtles in west Michigan.

  • Michigan Butterfly Network

zoo presentation school

As part of our pollinator conservation work, we want to understand how native butterfly populations are changing over time. By training community members to use the Michigan Butterfly Network monitoring protocol, we are offering passionate people the opportunity to help contribute to our understanding of butterfly populations in west Michigan.

  • Bat Surveys

zoo presentation school

West Michigan is home to several species of rare and threatened species of bats. This summer we will have a group of volunteers collecting bat occurrence data by driving predetermined routes and using special recorders and software to identify bat species. The data will be submitted to the North American Bat Monitoring Project as part of their ongoing analysis of bat abundance and occupancy across North America.

  • Massasauga Rattlesnake

zoo presentation school

The Massasauga is Michigan’s only venomous snake and plays an important role in the ecosystem . Unfortunately, these snakes are declining in numbers and are listed as Threatened. The John Ball Zoo helps to educate the public on the plight of the Massasauga and helps conservation biologists study them in the field. Currently, we are assisting Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, Grand Valley State University, and Sarett Nature Center develop new technologies to monitor this secretive snake species.

  • City Nature Challenge

zoo presentation school

The City Nature Challenge is one of the world’s largest annual community science events. Started by iNaturalist in 2016 as a friendly competition between the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, this bioblitz has grown into a global phenomenon with over 500 cities participating. Taking place over the last weekend in April each year, the City Nature Challenge is all about getting outside and documenting the biodiversity in and around our communities while building and strengthening relationships with other people who are passionate about conserving local species. The West Michigan City Nature Challenge is Michigan’s only City Nature Challenge event, and encompasses Allegan, Barry, Kent and Ottawa Counties. We are excited to partner with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and many other local organizations to engage our communities in four days of exploring our biodiverse outdoor spaces.

The Biodiversity Investigations Field Mission was created in collaboration with San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and the San Diego Natural History Museum to enhance middle school student exploration and learning around the iNaturalist community science program and the Life in a Biodiversity Hotspot program. This is a three-part educational experience, in which educators introduce their students to iNaturalist; students actively explore biodiversity concepts at the Beckman Center, and students are led through an iNaturalist Biodiversity Investigation, focused on scientific research being conducted at the San Diego Natural History Museum. Our hope is that upon completion of this program, students are able to engage with active scientific research as community scientists, and walk away with a greater appreciation of San Diego's regional biodiversity and the role they play to protect it.

Available Programs

Animal Architects  - Different animals live in different places, all specifically made to help them survive.  But have you ever wondered how a nest is made, or why a butterfly uses a cocoon?  How do termites make structures taller than four refrigerators stacked on top of one another?  Together we explain these architects and how they are so good at creating these wonders.

Animal Wrappers - Not all animals look and feel the same.  Why are some things soft and other things slimy?  Together we look at the different "wrappers" of animals and use audience observations to explain adaptations.  Best for grades K-1.

Animals from the Path  - Your guide will take you into the Zoo and introduce you to some of our residents from the path. You will learn more about the individuals and some of the work the Zoo is doing with the species at the Zoo or in the wild. This encounter will be hosted from the public viewing side of the habitat.  Examples of animals are cougars, seals, alligators, arctic fox, or lions.

Animals Up Close  - Get up close and virtual with our animal ambassadors. Your guide will introduce you to the ambassador(s) and tell you about the species and share their personal history. Your guest could be an ambassador tarantula, frog, salamander, tortoise, snake, rabbit, armadillo, porcupine, lizard, bird or so much more.

Arctic Awareness - Our friends in the arctic can seem otherworldly: how do they survive when it's so different than what we are used to?  Explore the adaptations of different arctic animals and how these adaptations ensure their survival even in the coldest winters.

Biodiversity Basics - Designed with 1st graders in mind, we look at the differences between different creatures, why they are present, and what would happen if any of these features changed.

Carolina's Coolest - When you think of the zoo, you likely think of elephants and giraffes and rhinos.  While we do have amazing African animals at the North Carolina Zoo, we also have animals that live here in North Carolina that you may have never seen!   We will talk about birds, reptiles, amphibians, and all animals that can be found right here in our backyard.

Extreme Living - These superheroes are able to survive extreme conditions!  What can live in a volcano?  What can survive icy waters?  What can live without a drop of water?  This program will be sure to bring some cool facts to share with your friends.

Feet, Paws, and Claws - The different feet, paws, and claws of different animals serve a purpose, but why do they all look so different?  Discover the differences between our toes.

Living with Nature - Our free program for Middle School and High School students focuses on the conservation work we do at the North Carolina Zoo, whether that be discussing international research, regional conservation, or even just explaining how we can all be better stewards!

Magnifi-senses - All Science starts with using our senses!  Together we will use our senses to observe the senses of other animals at work.  This program keeps the wow factor, is fast paced, and great for students of all ages, as student observations and comments lead the discussion.

Snakes: Friend or Foe  - Snakes are exciting but sometimes scary.  Many people will kill a snake on sight, but is this the best response?  Are snakes our friends or our foes?  Come all levels of snake enthusiasts, from the most hesitant ophidiophobe to the budding herpetologist, we have facts for all.

The 3 Bears - Three bears are in North America: Black bear, Grizzly bear, and Polar bear.  How are they different?  Using the age-old story of the three bears and goldilocks, we compare these three bears and point out just have different they really are.

EDUCATION CLASS TOPICS

Pre-k – 2nd grade.

Senses Whiskers, antenna, floppy ears and tasting the air are some of the ways that animals learn about the world around them. Explore the five senses like never before as we meet animals with some unique ways to taste, touch, hear, smell and see.

It’s Alive In this class, we will explore four characteristics of all living things: eating, breathing, growing and reproducing. Meet our animals up close and learn how growing and changing is different for every animal; especially frogs and butterflies!

Food Web Fun This class is an introduction to the parts of a habitat and the way plants and animals function. We will introduce the concept of a food web and meet producers, consumers and decomposers up close through an engaging animal presentation.

3rd – 5th Grade

Expedition Rainforest Investigate tropical rainforests layer by layer and discover what makes this habitat such an important part of global health. The incredible biodiversity and animal adaptations found in a rainforest are an important part of this class. Meet animal species that call a rainforest home.

African Safari From lush rainforests to the driest deserts and savannahs in between, the African continent offers a variety of ecosystems and animals. Meet our African zoo animals and learn the unique adaptations that help them survive and thrive in their habitat.

Exploring Ecosystems We will follow the flow of energy from the sun through all parts of an ecosystem and eventually back into the environment through decomposition. Different components of an ecosystem, modeled by a food web and up close animal presentations, as well as human impact on these systems will be presented in this class.

6th – 8th Grade

Adaptations Adaptations are developed over time and help animals survive and reproduce. This class will focus on the amazing adaptations that animals employ when eating, defending themselves, moving from place to place and more. We will present zoo animals that have unique physical and behavioral adaptations.

Predator vs. Prey The predator/prey relationship is one of the most important in the natural world. It drives natural selection and is what all animals depend upon to live. Join the zoo as we look at the adaptations and strategies that animals have to survive in their habitat. Your class will meet animals from the zoo’s collection that demonstrate predator and prey characteristics.

Reptiles Roundup An in-depth look at what makes a reptile a reptile, the important role they play in ecosystems and the adaptations that have allowed them to succeed for over 300 million years. We will meet several species of reptile and discuss the features that all reptiles have in common.

New Saint Petersburg Zoo / Françoise N'Thépé and Aldric Beckmann

zoo presentation school

  • Written by Alison Furuto
  • Published on April 27, 2011

This new zoo, which will become the icon of a new cultural and scientific life in Saint Petersburg , will evoke immemorial time, an era of monumental architecture when much land remained untouched by human development. Designed by architects, Françoise N’Thépé and Aldric Beckmann with landscape designers Bruno Tanant and Jean Christophe Nani , this fabricated urban development will evoke Pangea, the supercontinent described by German meteorologist and astronomer Alfred Wegener. The site appears ordinary as the land conceals some of the mysteries of our origins. It will be home to animal and scientific research where our most recent knowledge, our most advanced techniques create an enveloping environment for visitors to explore. More images and architects’ description after the break.

How do we render this encounter of two aesthetic worlds born of the unlikely overlap of modernity and eternity? We use Copernicus’ transition from the closed world to the infinite universe. According to contemporary German philosopher Sloterdijk, the fundamental form of nature and thought is the sphere. This will be the leitmotif of the following proposal. An optimistic figure of perfection, the sphere offers a gentle transition of the radical changes of the image of the world extending from the disc imagined by Ptolemy with its geo-centred circles to the globe; from the simple inhabited entity to the very incarnation of the world.

zoo presentation school

The zoo as sphere is seen as a metaphor for the history of humanity, the deep connection between man and his environment and the link between self and other. It makes this coexistence possible by demonstrating the idea that it is possible to produce an ideal world that can easily translate to the real world. The spheres determine the variable boundaries of our living space, whether it has the intimacy of a bubble or the cosmopolitan immensity of a globe.

zoo presentation school

The project will develop a cult of the instantaneous, reveal the fleeting, heighten awareness of passing time, the emotion of the seasons and finally nature as a positive counterpoint to the urbanisation of the city of Saint Petersburg. This architecture and landscape will evoke a rich and multifarious land in which a multitude of animal discoveries are concealed for the pleasure and curiosity of visitors, young and old. The Primorskiy zoological park is cut off from its immediate neighborhood, gaining in density to become wild and mysterious: a park and garden as a place of popular privilege, the nobility of the future city.

zoo presentation school

Architecture disappears in favor of geography, controlled like the resurgence of a landscape to be discovered. The entity grouping of the set of utilities is crucial to the running of the zoo and becomes a signal, a view point, an identity-based relief between form and shapelessness pierced with cavities. Like a peninsula, it generates an above and a below which communicate and interpenetrate. It develops areas of light, uncertainties, views, reflections and depths offering the first emotions of a visit that will play with weather and seasons throughout six biozones: South East Asia with Japan, Eurasia, Africa with Madagascar, Australia, South America, and North America with the North Pole.

zoo presentation school

In this introduction to the globe, it will be the zoo’s job to make man, animals and plants relate to each other, through colors, through smells, through the immersion of our body in the body of nature. It will consist in presenting the impossible as possible and the unthinkable as obvious. We would like the zoo to be a place of experiences, sensuous and educational to begin with, and then physiological – a place where you discover nature at the same time as your own nature, the scene of an interaction between man and animals where reason aims at apprehending everything and refusing everything, the universal of belonging and the subjectivity of the individual. Artifice / Nature is the theme of an intriguing, mysterious, attractive, off-kilter strategy at the service of the animals and their well-being.

Saint-Petersburg Zoo

Designed by Anna Bolshakova and Vladimir Bolshakov .

Saint Petersburg Zoo identity

The new zoo in Saint-Petersburg is a brand new approach to communication with animals. There will be no cages in the zoo — the first zoo of this kind in Russia. The animals will be separated from people with natural objects: water ditches, altitude drops, and land forms. This feature is the foundation of the visual communication idea for the brand: “The new zoo in Saint-Petersburg is a communication without barriers.”

The zoo houses animals from every continent, with colour-coding used to identify the location. Each continent also has its own characters — bright, emotional and memorable stylized animals figures.

The identity is about evoking positive emotions. Friendly and funny characters play the main role in the zoo’s communication, each interacting with the visitors. Every element of the identity is individual and the characters play an inseparable role.

The new zoo in Saint-Petersburg. Bright emotions, exciting discoveries, a communication without barriers.

I love this. Fun, playful, cute, colourful… It makes me smile. And there aren’t many designs that generate that emotion.

E X C E L E N T E ! Bellísimo, sobre todo las aplicaciones de los íconos y el colorido.

Just fabulous! Totally love it. What I specifically like the most is the bold use of block colours, beautifully simple.

The whole colourful/playful/bubbly approach has been done many times.

But hot damn, does it work so well here. Awesome!

The design in itself is well done but I find it too disneyfied for a zoo. At least from my perspective, a zoo entertains but also educates and tells stories. Many zoos also carry out research. I find these aspects not acknowledged at all by the design.

I’m not so keen on the character style. Feels a bit like a graphic style has been chosen for reasons other than to be appealing to families. The only connection with the logo it seems is the dots as eyes.

That aside, the rest of the identity has been executed very impressively. I think the colour scheme, the clever use of media, and how it has been applied to products and outdoor advertising is great! My favourite bit is the logo. The simple use of eyes in ‘zoo’ is quite charming. A fun wee project.

What can I say – Amazing! I think kids and adults will love it, and it presents so many different ways to engage with people. Thanks for sharing.

Loving this one! The seemingly endless possibility in the application is just awesome!

Bright and playful, brings a lot of colour to Saint-Petersbourg’s often cloudy and rainy environment!

I wish that a brand new zoo would develop in St. Petersburg some day on some 160 ha such as the one in East Berlin, you know, a themed one with wildlife from Africa, Asia, Australia, South America and the Polar regions!

The San Diego Zoo Debuts Giant Pandas

thumb_74014.png

On August 8, the first pandas to enter the United States in 21 years, will make their eagerly awaited public debut at the San Diego Zoo.

Since arriving in late June, the pair has been acclimating to their home in the newly reimagined Panda Ridge. This innovative space is four times larger than the San Diego Zoo’s previous panda habitat and is inspired by the breathtaking, lush landscapes in and around giant pandas’ native habitats in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shanxi provinces. It features new shade trees for climbing, a diverse array of plants, and rolling hillsides that allow Yun Chuan and Xin Bao to navigate and explore vertically.

Yun Chuan (pronounced yoon chu-an) is an almost five-year-old male identifiable by his long, pointy nose. Xin Bao (pronounced sing bao) is a nearly four-year-old female best recognized by her large, round face and big, fluffy ears.

The process to bring giant pandas back to the United States has been years in the making. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year conservation partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on. The partnership has served as a powerful example of how, through diplomatic relations, there is a path to creating a sustainable future for giant pandas.
