The rebuttal to those that think that studying the media, in all its forms, is in some way unimportant when compared to more practical, rather than text-based, subjects is therefore obvious: how are we to play an active role in creating the world around us if we are unaware of the way in which it is already being shaped? As I have progressed through my own study in the field, I have been enthused by growth of my own understanding of both the analysis and creation of media forms and am keen to learn more that I may, ultimately, pass this understanding on to others.

I am currently studying towards the Diploma in Creative and Media; which has provided an excellent balance between teaching textual analysis and enhancing my understanding of the media’s effects and introducing me to the industrial aspects of working within the field. As I am especially intrigued by the cultural contexts in which media is both produced and consumed this dual approach has proven to be the best possible way to expand on these interests. It has also proven to be an excellent development of my previous study of Media to BTEC level (completed in January 2009) and, I believe, my consistently solid grades throughout these two courses exhibit my overarching and ongoing interests and commitments within the field.

I have also taken every exciting opportunity throughout my schooling to gain both specific and transferable skills through work experience and volunteering. My work experience placement within my school’s City Learning Centre (CLC) introduced me to the realities and pressures of the working world, as I was tasked with creating a website from scratch within the two-week period. Alongside the technical and design aspects of the build, I also found that I quickly evolved strong teamwork skills, which are essential for working on collaborative project work at undergraduate level. Leading a team for part of the project also showed me that I possessed, and enjoyed using, good leadership skills and guiding others through processes that they previously did not understand. This experience, combined with my strong belief that an understanding of the media is crucial for everyone, has inspired me to look into teaching Media Studies as a potential future career. Working as a mentor to a Year 7 student has also proven a rewarding experience, adding to my potential future teaching ambitions by giving me a better idea of what is involved while also allowing me to play an active role in my school community.

Playing an active role in my community has also been a strong motivator in my extra-curricular activities. I am a keen sportsman and was the captain of my local football team for 3 years, leading them to two finals. This position was a good chance to demonstrate how strong leadership and teamwork work in tandem to produce good results. As an amateur boxer, my relationship between my coaching team and myself has also demonstrated the value of this dynamic from another perspective. Taking the determination and commitment I have learnt through these activities into my weekend job as a waiter has allowed me to quickly be offered extra responsibilities, proving my ability to apply these same positive attributes in all areas of my life.

Having shown commitment, ability and a hardworking attitude in all activities, I believe that I have what it takes to become a valuable contribution to any course or university. More importantly, I also believe that my strong passion for my subject will not only help me to succeed but will also inspire others, whether through working as a team at undergraduate level or fulfilling my ultimate goal of passing my knowledge onto subsequent generations through teaching.

Digital media degree personal statement example (1a)

Imagination is a wonderful thing. It breed concepts and ideas that when complimented with knowledge, can mould our world into a more radical and entertaining place to be. I hold a great ambition and desire to contribute my two cents to the ever expanding and exciting field of Digital Media. The prospect of a career with such broad exciting potential really attracts me to this area and one I feel I can thrive in.

It was during my days as an immature student (2005-2008) that I discovered my creative streak. Through the tuition of my housemate I picked up the guitar which soon won the lion’s share of my spare time. However, before long I grew unsatisfied learning the work of others so I began trying to write my own lyrics and music. I haven’t stopped since. I find it a great form of creative expression and fancy the idea of creating videos and multimedia to bring ideas to life. Also during my recent backpacking experiences around Asia, Australia and New Zealand I unearthed a passion for photography that I would previously never gave much thought to. But with such beautiful scenic locations in abundance, it was hard not to get the camera out. I became friends with a fellow tourist on my travels who had done a Digital Media course in the U.K. and he really opened my eyes to the sector. I have continued this since and would be eager to learn the professional approach to the art.

I regret not realising this enthusiasm a few years earlier as it may of led me to this point a lot sooner. Electronic & Computer engineering seemed appealing to me at the time as I love technology and would be a self-confessed gadget freak. But if I am honest, ultimately I was not ready for a course so technically challenging and secondly the heavy reliance on mathematical based modules contributed to my struggle. So when I recently decided to return to Higher Education I had to ask myself a few questions.

1. What do I truly and honestly want to do with my life? 2. How can I utilize my skills and interests to achieve my ambitions? 3. Which is the best route to make it happen?

The answers to these led me to pursue a career in Digital Media.

For much of my employed life I have been in the service industry. Most notable would be my four years with Lidl Supermarkets . They place a lot of emphasis on teamwork and organization and it is with these traits I feel would help me in any given project and working with others. In early February I’m due to take a Web Design course over twelve weeks which awards a City and Guilds iTQ Certificate of Unit Credit in Website Software Level 2. And following this I will undertake an ECDL Certificate in Image Editing in order to gain skills and knowledge of Photoshop. In doing these I’m hoping to get a little head start before September.

In conclusion, I deeply wish to be given the opportunity to release my potential in such a creative environment. Embracing the technologies of today and utilizing them to bring to life my imagination is something I would relish. Developing my hobbies and interests into a career gives me great incentive and one I will devoutly strive to achieve.

Film, cinematography and media personal statement example.

I want to direct films. Directors have complete control over what is projected on the screen and, with this ability; they can hold the audience's attention. I want to be able to use my imagination to do just that. My imagination helps me visualise scripts, books, and even how a film could have been better.

I have had a passion to work in the media industry since I began studying media at my secondary school. On my current college course I've found that I have been most motivated when I have been working on the production stage of a project: as a camera operator or director, and this has given me the desire to continue studying in these areas at university.

In the last year I have been taking part in the Bafta Student Mentoring program outside of the college. This has given me valuable experience in working as part of a team within the media industry. It helped me to improve my communication skills and it gave me the belief that I have the potential to do this as a job in the future.

Within my college I have just started working as a Student Ambassador; helping one of my lecturers teach diploma student about the editing program Adobe Premiere. Taking responsibility for other people has boosted my confidence and has helped me increase the commitment I have to take my studies further.

Many aspects of my hobbies and interests are to do with media and the media industry. I especially enjoy watching films and television programs because it helps me gather ideas for different projects I may have in the future. I try to look at films critically: to see where some productions may have gone wrong and how they could have been improved.

My other hobbies include reading. My favourite authors are Dan Brown and JK Rowling; their books have assisted me in improving my creative mind and imagination. During my leisure time, I socialise with my mates at the park, pub, club, and cinema; and this improves my communication skills. Most of my time, not spent at home, is spent in Ireland with my Dad. Whilst over there, I have to frequently take care of my sister and am trusted with this responsibility.

The film genre that most appeals to me, and the type of film I would most like to make myself, is “horror” or “horror comedy”. The directors that have most influenced me are Rob Zombie (particularly “Halloween”, released in 2007, and “Halloween II,” released in 2009) and David Hackl (particularly “Saw V”, 2008). My most influential directors within the “horror comedy” genre are Keenen Ivory Wayans and David Zucker (particularly the “Scary Movie” film series).

I consider myself a focused, organised and determined person. It has been my ambition for a several years now to make a career for myself in the media industry; ideally working in film production. I believe that a place on your course would really assist me in achieving that goal by developing the skills that I have already acquired and adding to my experience and confidence. As well as benefiting, I also think I have a lot to contribute imaginatively and creatively as a student. For all these reasons, I hope you'll consider my application seriously.
