  • Do not forget to be familiar with your speech:   You need not memorize it, but be familiar with it.
  • Do not use your speech as a tool for hurting people: Writing a thank you speech is used mainly to show gratitude . If you’ve recently won an award — congratulations! There’s a good chance that a lot of hard work and blood, sweat, and tears went into the recognition you’re about to receive. Now, your biggest task is nailing the perfect award acceptance speed. After all, it’s important to show gratitude for the honor while also ensuring that your words will touch hearts and minds and hopefully inspire others to follow in your footsteps. But have no fear — we’re here to help.

From heartfelt gratitude to powerful storytelling, these examples showcase the key elements that make an acceptance speech unforgettable. No matter whether you’re leading a company, launching startups, writing books, teaching students, coaching teams, or giving advice as a consultant—there’s plenty for you to learn when it comes to crafting the perfect acceptance speech.

How to Give A Pitch-Perfect Award Acceptance Speech

Your award is a huge accomplishment that deserves to be celebrated. But before you start popping the champagne, there’s one more thing you need to do: prepare your acceptance speech.

While you could just say thanks and be done with it, doing so is a disservice to those who helped you get where you are. After all, an acceptance speech is so much more than just a simple thank you. It’s an opportunity to not just express your genuine gratitude, but also to acknowledge why the award is important and share the glory with those who helped you along the way.

Express Genuine Gratitude and Emotion

First and foremost, an acceptance speech is a chance to express your heartfelt appreciation for the honor you’ve received. This isn’t the time to be modest or downplay your achievements. Let your emotions shine through and show how much the award means to you.

Take a cue from Sandra Bullock’s acceptance speech at the 2010 Oscars. She was visibly moved as she thanked her mother, Helga B., along with all “the moms that take care of the babies and the children no matter where they come from.”

Acknowledge Why It Is Important

Beyond expressing gratitude, your acceptance speech should also acknowledge why the award is significant. What does it represent? Explain how the award is a reflection of your personal principles or highlights where you would like make changes professionally.

For example, when Malala Yousafzai accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, she used her acceptance speech to highlight the importance of education and the ongoing fight for women’s rights. “This award is not just for me,” she said. “It is for those forgotten children who want education. It is for those frightened children who want peace. It is for those voiceless children who want change.”

Share the Glory

Finally, a great acceptance speech shares the spotlight with those who helped make your success possible. This could be your family, your team, your mentors, or even your fans.

When Taylor Swift won Album of the Year at the 2016 Grammys, she made sure to thank her collaborators and supporters. “I want to thank the fans for the last ten years and the recording academy for giving us this unbelievable honor,” she said. “I want to thank all of my collaborators that you see on this stage.”

So as you’re crafting your own award acceptance speech, remember to express genuine gratitude, acknowledge the significance of the honor, and share the glory with those who helped you along the way. With these elements in place, you’ll deliver a speech that not only thanks the right people but inspires and uplifts your audience as well.

Writing Your Acceptance Speech

You’ve just been honored with a prestigious award and now it’s time to give your acceptance speech. It’s crunch time to create a moment that sticks and sparks motivation in everyone. But where do you even begin?

Crafting an excellent award acceptance speech takes some planning and preparation. You want to strike the right tone, share a meaningful message, and of course, express your heartfelt gratitude. Let’s walk through crafting an acceptance speech that’ll definitely make a mark.

Brainstorm Ideas

Before you start jotting down your speech, take some time to reflect on what this award means to you. Why is it significant? What does it represent in terms of your journey, your values, or your aspirations? Brainstorm some key themes or stories you might want to touch on.

In addition, ask yourself: “What challenges did you overcome? Who helped you along the way? What lessons did you learn? What impact do you hope to make with this recognition?” Your answers to these questions will form the bulk of your acceptance speech.

Write Your Speech

With your brainstorming done, it’s time to start putting pen to paper. Begin with a strong opening line that will grab your audience’s attention. You might share a surprising fact, a thought-provoking question, or even a touch of humor.

As you write the body of your speech, keep in mind the time constraint you’re working with. Most acceptance speeches are fairly short, so you’ll need to be selective about what you include. Focus on a few key points or anecdotes that support your central theme.

Be Specific in Your Speech

When it comes to expressing your gratitude, it’s important to be specific. Don’t just rattle off a generic list of thank-yous. Take the time to acknowledge the individuals or organizations that have played a significant role in your success.

For example, in her Golden Globes acceptance speech , Oprah Winfrey specifically thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as well as several other key individuals by name.

The Power of Storytelling in Your Acceptance Speech

One of the most effective ways to make your acceptance speech memorable is by incorporating storytelling. Share a personal anecdote or experience that relates to your journey or the significance of the award.

Again, consider Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes acceptance speech. In it, she opens with a story from her childhood, when she sat on the floor watching Sidney Poitier become the first African American to ever win a Golden Globe. As she states in her speech, “I have tried many, many times to explain what a moment like that means to a little girl…and it is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this same award.” With the power of storytelling, Winfrey highlights the men and women who have sought truth and justice no matter the personal cost.

As you craft your award acceptance speech, remember to brainstorm ideas, be specific in your gratitude, and harness the power of storytelling. Remember, just like the acceptance speech examples we’ve looked at, your words have the power to touch hearts and spark change in those listening.

Preparing to Deliver Your Speech

You’ve written a fantastic award acceptance speech, filled with heartfelt gratitude and inspiring stories. Now, it’s showtime. However, public speaking can be nerve-wracking, even for the most seasoned professionals. That’s why the key to a successful speech delivery is preparation. You want to be confident, polished, and engaging when you step up to the podium. Here are some tips to help you get ready for your big moment.

Rehearsing Your Speech

One of the best ways to calm your nerves and boost your confidence is by practicing your speech beforehand. Read it out loud several times, paying attention to your pacing, tone, body language , and emphasis. Consider practicing in front of a mirror or recording yourself so you can see and hear how you come across. In addition, grabbing a buddy or work pal to listen in can provide you feedback for improvement. Remember, the more familiar you are with your speech, the more natural and effortless it will feel when you deliver it for real.

Making Your Speech Memorable

When it comes to making your speech memorable, it’s all about connecting with your audience. Use eye contact, facial expressions, and gestures to engage them and convey your emotions.

You might also consider incorporating a memorable phrase or tagline that encapsulates your message. For example, in his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Martin Luther King, Jr. repeated the phrase “I have a dream” eight times, driving home his vision for a more just and equal society.

Respecting the Audience and the Clock

When delivering your acceptance speech, it’s important to be mindful of your audience and the time allotted. Express your gratitude sincerely, but avoid gushing or going overboard with your thank-yous. Similarly, respect the time limit you’ve been given. A short award acceptance speech is often more impactful than a long, rambling one. Aim to deliver your message concisely and powerfully, leaving your audience wanting more.

As you prepare to deliver your award acceptance speech, remember to rehearse thoroughly, focus on making it memorable, and respect your audience and the clock. With this game plan ready, stepping up to speak will feel a lot less daunting.

Avoiding Common Pitfalls in an Acceptance Speech

As you’ve seen from the examples above, a great award acceptance speech has the power to move and inspire an audience. But what goes into crafting and delivering a truly impactful speech? Here are a few final tips to keep in mind as you prepare for your big moment.

General Guidelines

While it’s important to express your gratitude and share your story, there are a few common pitfalls to avoid in your acceptance speech:

  • Don’t ramble or go off-topic. Stay focused on your central message.
  • Avoid clichés or generic platitudes. Be specific and authentic in your language.
  • Don’t forget to thank the important people, but keep your list of thank-yous concise.
  • Avoid inside jokes or references that may not resonate with your entire audience.

By steering clear of these pitfalls, you’ll ensure that your speech is clear, meaningful, and memorable.

Avoid Going Overboard with Emotions in Your Speech

When that award is finally in your hands, feeling a rush of emotions isn’t just common; it’s expected. This is particularly true if the honor marks a major highlight in either your work or personal journey. However, it’s important to strike a balance between showing genuine emotion and maintaining your composure.

While a few tears or a quavering voice can be powerful, going overboard with your emotions may distract from your message or make your audience uncomfortable. Aim to express your feelings in a way that is authentic but still allows you to deliver your speech effectively.

Remember, your award acceptance speech is an opportunity to share your gratitude, your story, and your vision with the world. By avoiding common pitfalls and finding the right emotional balance, you’ll be able to deliver a speech that truly resonates with your audience and leaves a lasting impact.

How to Give an Award Acceptance Speech to Thank, Inspire and Impress

sample of a thank you speech for an award

Let’s say you got nominated for an award and now you have to give an acceptance speech. It’s pretty important to give a good speech, no matter what you’re being awarded for. Looking good doesn’t hurt either!

So, how do you give a good acceptance speech for your award? First off, you should ask yourself what message you would like to convey to your audience.

Generally, an acceptance speech provides the speaker with an opportunity to not only thank the individuals who helped you win the award but also highlight ideas and issues that you care about and even inspire people to do something even bigger.

Which is why it’s important that you don’t mess up.

Writing a good speech, any kind of speech, requires a lot of time and preparation, in order to ensure that you are well prepared and have included any important details that you would prefer to not leave out.

Here are a few practical tips on how you can draw up your award acceptance speech.

What is an Award Acceptance Speech?

This is a type of speech given by an individual who’s receiving a prize, honor or an award. It is an unwritten tradition to share gratitude to individuals who you’d like or acknowledge or thank by giving a few words.

Your audience may be made up of your family and friends but also individuals in your industry who you respect and admire, so when giving an acceptance speech, ensure you make the best of it.

award-speech

As compared to other speeches, an acceptance speech does not include a beginning , body or conclusion and doesn’t need a PowerPoint display. In addition to this, acceptance speeches aren’t allotted a lot of time as you would with a keynote speech, so you will have to make it short.

Acceptance speeches also provide you, the speaker who’s accepting the award, an opportunity to either make a great impression , no impression or a terrible one. So, you have to be careful with how you write up and give your speech.

What are the m ain Goals of an Acceptance Speech?

Your goals with regard to this speech should be to;

  • Thank the individuals who helped you in whatever you did or in your career
  • Center on one idea that you want to leave your audience with, whether it’s motivating them to work hard or inspiring them to follow their dreams
  • Make a great impression

Since you’ll only have a few minutes to give your speech, focusing on one point or one of the most important lessons you’ve learnt in life is a good way to go.

Additionally, your speech should give your audience a favorable impression about you while also letting them know that you’ve thought about what you’ve said and that you’re respectful.

How to Write a Great Acceptance Speech

Most individuals who win an award start by thanking the individuals who helped them when they accept it.

There are many different ways of thanking people, so which one is applied in this context?   Being as specific as possible when thanking individuals is the best way to go.

Therefore, you should start by:

Be Specific

Thank people by telling them exactly what they did that assisted you

You should do this in a way that is meaningful. Saying “Thank you for your support” doesn’t really mean anything.

thanking

So instead, you should look at the individuals you mention and while addressing them by their names, thank them while telling them what exactly you are thanking them for.

For instance, you can say, “Lisa, you encouraged me after being rejected by 7 different publishing houses, you were there for me.”

This will make your speech much more interesting to your audience while also appearing sincere.

Pro-Tip: Make eye contact when thanking every individual while mentioning their name, as it will not only convey respect but also sincerity.

Tell a story

Great award acceptance speeches usually tell stories. While the time allotted to give your speech may be short, 30 seconds is enough time to give a short story.

You can either;

  • Recount an actual conversation you had with someone; be it a family member colleague or friend, about a challenge you had, how you conquered it and its relevance to the award you’re accepting.
  • Talk about an encounter that happened

Keep in mind though that if you’ll be telling a story , ensure that its relevant to the award, it’s brief and that you tell it in a way that captivates your audience.

Now that we’ve discussed how to prepare for and write your acceptance speech, we can now look into how you will deliver that speech.

How to Prepare for an Award Acceptance Speech?

Nothing is worse than having no speech prepared when you win a major award; fumbling on stage in front of an audience is not a good thing for anyone.

It also shows the individuals who nominated you that you do not respect them, so take some time and prepare.

First and foremost,

Make your speech memorable

Many of the speeches given at award shows are short, so if it isn’t memorable, it can easily be forgotten.

Good thing is you have a lot of resources at your disposal, the biggest being the internet. Thank heavens for technology! Everyone, including yourself, wants to give a great speech . Looking up great acceptance speeches on YouTube will provide you with amazing examples of great speeches.

award-acceptance-speech

Most of these examples are short, as acceptance speeches should be. Besides this, they also seen genuine, contain an emotional moment and are funny.

You may not have a funny bone in your body, which is okay as being funny will entirely be dependent on what you’ll be talking about in your speech. So, no pressure.

Rehearse your speech

It may sound ridiculous to practice your acceptance speech, especially considering that it’s brief. However, this is a great way to modify your speech to your liking.

You can do this by recording yourself giving your speech using your camera or phone.

Looking through the recording will help you pick out what you don’t like and what you like about it. This allows you to repeat your speech as many times as you want while implementing the changes you’d like until you feel happy and comfortable with its final form.

Once you are satisfied with your final take, know you already have it in the bag; you’re going to give a great speech!

Pro-Tip: Practicing helps get rid of the jitters and helps you feel more confident in both yourself and your speech.

How To Deliver Your Acceptance Speech

When delivering your acceptance speech, ensure that it’s at least entertaining . It doesn’t have to make the audience laugh so much that their ribs hurt. However, it also shouldn’t be so boring that people doze off or make conversation while you address them.

So, first off,

Don’t Be Boring

If your speech doesn’t have a few jokes in it or isn’t funny, at least try to include some emotion or a dramatic moment. Boring speeches make people want to gorge their eyes out and seal their ears, so they don’t have to look at you and hear you drone on. Don’t subject your audience to unnecessary torture.

bored-audience

Be entertaining. At the very least, say something entertaining, interesting or amusing, even if you’ll be making fun of yourself.

If you are going to show emotion, don’t go overboard

Blubbering through your speech isn’t interesting, so try to keep it together. This is where practicing your speech comes in, it helps you show just the right amount of emotion while still conveying your message to the audience.

Pro-Tip: A little emotion goes a long way, so don’t overdo it.

Using what we have so far discussed, you should be able to not only write a great speech but also present your speech to your audience in a memorable way.

Now, let’s look at a few things to avoid when giving your acceptance speech.

What to avoid in an Award Acceptance Speech

  • Do not tell your audience you don’t have a lot of time

This only uses up more time. Instead, use the time you’ve been given to the maximum advantage.

  • Do  not tell your audience that you’re nervous

Even though you might be nervous , other people may not recognize that you are. So, there’s no need to waste valuable time.

By the way, deliberately pausing or speaking slowly helps you overcome any jitters you may have. Thank me later once you try this trick of the trade.

  • Do  not thank too many people

Given that you’ll only have a few minutes to give your speech (at most), try to thank no more than five individuals.

You can send the people you didn’t thank on stage personal notes; that’s why such notes exist.

  • Do  not read your speech from a piece of paper

Not only is this devoid of sincerity, emotion and personality but it also looks scripted . Again, practicing helps you capture your main points in mind.

In conclusion, it all comes down to being genuine when thanking individuals, entertaining and leaving your audience with a good life lesson or something that inspires them. Show your audience that you, indeed, were worthy of getting that award!

thank you speech for nobel prize award

It is always expected for anyone who receives an award to give a speech. A thank you speech writing is a statement of appreciation or gratitude given to an individual or a group of people or entity. Often times we witness this during a famous movie or music award shows. But of course this is not limited to such event, as an thank you speech for an award can also be conveyed in an academic, business setting and many others.

Depending on what type of award ceremony you are attending, a thank you speech may be informal or formal, brief or lengthy in nature. Some of its contents are expected to convey a little background of the an awardee’s achievements. But overall when we achieve, we usually do so because of the help of others. Or people who served as inspiration for your success. Your speech of appreciation is the gift or acknowledgment you give in return for what was given you. So, if you want to learn how to compose a great thank you speech and deliver in a way that shows you really mean it, here are tips to consider along the way:

If you are expected to win or receive an award, its best to prepare a sample speech in advance. While doing so, you are well aware of your audience and who are in attendance. Based on the people in the crowd, go over what needs to be said or conveyed that would attract your audience and not seem too boring. Let’s say you have a group of young adults in the audience, so it pays to be have a witty introduction or an  anecdote. So whatever you think about, always consider your audience when you deliver you speech.

In some cases, awardees may talk a little about the award or achievement they have received. And the endeavors they had to go through in order form to achieve this. While it can be helpful and intriguing to include this subject, always make it short and direct to the point. You are here to give a speech not a seminar. There are always time constraints when it comes to award ceremonies. Unless of course, the awarding committee allows you to do so.

Start by thanking the the society or organization for the award, followed by a thanks for everyone who has helped you win this award. Determine beforehand who you are thanking for and their names in order. What are you thanking them for? Be specific rather than general. Naming what you are grateful for gives your thanks more meaning. Lastly, determine what their gift of time, expertise, encouragement mean to you? This is the best time to convey your praise and appreciation.

If your not too keen in telling any background story of your achievement, perhaps a brief light and pleasant story could be part of your speech. Saying something to keep the mood light and bring smiles to people’s faces will be appreciated. It pays to deliver something interesting to the audience that would get them to remembered you by.

As you get towards the end of your speech, think of something encouraging and meaningful to say. That others may be inspired to follow your footstep towards achievement. Or dedicate the honor. You can give special appreciation to a loved one or mentor by dedicating your award to that person.

Yes, it is highly advisable to rehearse beforehand. Most especially for first timers and if you have a bit of stage fright, practicing in front of a mirror or with family and friends can you give you a momentary feel on what it looks like to talk to a live audience. They can also give you additional tips as you do so.

I’d say it is, most especially one cannot achieve without the help of others. Also it a good way of relaying your appreciation since attaining such achievement is never an easy road to take. In this way it generates respect in the heart of others, it is a statement that can bridge gaps and build friendly relationships.

A speech is a formal or informal way of addressing a crowd of people with a particular topic on mind. Giving a speech allows you to address a group of people to express your thoughts and oftentimes, your opinion. You can find speeches in many different environments and with many different purposes.

It pays to be prepared whenever you are about to go on stage or face a lot of people. Having thought of a speech beforehand can give you the confidence and guidance as you prepare what to say to the people or community who has been of great help of you along the way.

Writing a thank you speech can be intimidating. It is challenging to remember all of the people who have helped you along the way. If you recently reached a personal, spiritual or career milestone, you may be wondering how to compose a ‘thank you’ speech. A ‘thank you’ speech needs to identify all of the people you are thankful for, as well as the specific things you are thankful for and their personal or professional meaning to you. While ‘thank you’ speeches are relatively straightforward, they can be tricky to write, especially if the list of people to thank is very large or very small.

Sample Thank You Speeches

sample of a thank you speech for an award

Prioritizing Your Thank You List

Step 1 Make sure you have a complete list.

  • Who helped you become the person you are today?
  • Who offered you the most encouragement?
  • What specific contributions are you thanking people for?
  • Who gave you the time of day when you really needed help?
  • Who offered valuable expertise at crucial moments?

Step 2 Start ordering your list.

  • For instance, under the category expertise, you could rank individuals from most to least important contributions of expertise to the project or award you are giving the speech for.

Step 3 Determine the top ranked people.

  • For instance, a ‘thank you’ speech at a wedding should be no longer than three minutes long.

Composing Your Speech

Step 1 Outline the structure of your speech.

  • In 1985, Sally Field spoke from the heart in her Oscar thank you speech. She said, “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now you like me!”
  • In 1970, at the age of 61, John Wayne was genuine about how long it took him to win, upon accepting the award for best actor for the role of one-eyed Rooster Cogburn. He said, “Wow! If I’d known that, I would have put the patch on 35 years ago.”

Step 4 Express humility.

  • For instance, you could say: “I am so humbled by this honor.”
  • You could also use humor. For instance, when George Clooney won best supporting actor in 2006 but lost the best director award, he drew on his self-deprecating humor. He said, “Well, it looks like I’m not winning best director…”

Step 5 Avoid verbosity.

  • If it is a short ‘thank you’ speech, it is often best to skip the intro entirely. The audience will know why you are giving the speech, so follow the example of Abraham Lincoln who always skipped the introduction.

Step 7 Write about the most important people on your list.

  • Once you have written about the most important individuals, you can always edit the speech later for concision.
  • Budget your time for each person. Remember that if you spend too much time on any one person, you may not be able to get to others who still really need to be thanked.
  • If your speech needs to be really short, you could say: "I would like to thank Charley, my wonderful husband for supporting me through the long nights. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to my beautiful daughters, Kiera and Emily. Mommy can play more now. To Jeff Goldstein of Caracas, for feeding my crew; to Jake, Mindy, Paul, and Gwen for staying up so late, so we could get it right..."

Step 8 Finish composing the body of your speech.

  • To recognize people by function, you could say, “I also want to thank everyone who brightened up this long journey with good humor, such as John, Johnny, Arjen, Peter, Ann, Zoe, etc.”
  • So, for example, you might say: "And for the catering, thanks to Joe, Mike, Mindy, and Jeanette."

Step 9 Compose a conclusion.

  • “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice (Meister Eckhart)
  • “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
  • “I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks” (William Shakespeare)

Timing, Memorizing and Practicing Your Speech

Step 1 Time your speech.

  • You could try using online script timers to get a rough sense of your speech time. However, you should still practice with a real timer because everyone speaks at a slightly different pace.

Step 2 Write keywords or phrases on note cards.

  • You could dress up in the clothes you will be wearing at the event.
  • Try practicing the speech at the event location to get more comfortable.

About This Article

Patrick Muñoz

Writing a thank you speech can seem intimidating, but if you make a list of the people you’re grateful to first, it should be relatively simple. Make a note of anyone who has helped you get to where you are now, whether professionally, supporting you emotionally, or giving you valuable advice. Order the list by how grateful you are to each person. When you write your speech, give the top few people more time and add a few details about how they helped you. Then, you can list the people further down the list together. For example, say, “And I also want to thank my colleagues, Peter, Ann, Zoe, and John.” Practice saying your speech out loud so you can keep it within the time limit. Thank you speech: how to perfect cordiality in a speech

Appreciation is the sincerest form of flattery. It makes people feel seen, and their efforts feel recognized.

Any leader worth their salt knows that the key to winning the loyalties of their team is regular appreciation.

Giving a thank you speech is not just good manners but gives an insight into your character. The acknowledgement only works if it comes from the heart and rings genuine.

So, how do you give a thank you speech?

Let’s jump into it!

Table of Contents

When is it appropriate to give a thank you speech?

In a company, at an award function, for friends and family, structure of the opening statement, thanking the speakers after the event, thanking the organization, thanking the organization team, have you missed anyone, concluding your thank you speech, mention people by name, positive ending, get it over with.

You don’t really need an occasion to thank somebody. However, in a more formal setting, there may be occasions that specifically call for it. The following are the times when it is most appropriate to give a thank you speech:

  • After getting a promotion
  • After celebrating an achievement
  • Appreciating your team after tackling a tough project
  • When receiving an award or recognition
  • When establishing a new venture

The list can go on endlessly as your field might have different occasions to give a vote of thanks. Make sure not to miss any opportunity to acknowledge the reasonable efforts of the people around you!

Things to keep in mind

When you’ve decided to give a thank you speech, you need to keep a couple of things in mind. This advice differs according to why you are giving a thank you speech and who is in your audience.

If your company is celebrating you for a milestone or recognition of hard work, make sure you don’t only talk about yourself.

Be generous with your words when talking about the company itself and the great work it does.

Elaborate on how much you enjoy working here and what exactly the company does the right to make it happen.

This will make sure your higher-ups feel appreciated for the work environment they’ve created.

If you are receiving an award by a third party for your work, make sure you adequately express how honored you will be selected.

It is always a good idea to highlight what a recognized organization it is and how you are happy to be a part of it.

If you’re giving a speech to thank friends and family, the setting is much more intimate. You can drop the formalities and talk about how special these people are to you.

As they have gone the extra mile to appreciate you, make sure you return the favor by talking about how lucky you are to have them and their support.

How to write a thank-you speech?

There is no need to beat around the bush with a thank you speech. You can simply start off by expressing gratitude.

An award or recognition means that you can simply open by thanking the company or organization for the honor.

You don’t need to come armed with quotes. In fact, that might actually seem much more disingenuous. Your opening statement also sets the tone for the rest of your speech.

Some factors might determine how formal or informal you need to be with your opening:

In a formal setting, it is best to keep it cordial. Assuming it is a suit and tie event, most people are dressed up and expecting you to keep it classy as well.

As such, we recommend you go for something along the lines of, “I’m so honored to be taking up this renowned stage. Words cannot express how grateful I feel to be the recipient of this award.”

An informal event can be anything from an intimate gathering of loved ones to anniversary parties of a broader range of friends.

In such an event, you can express yourself more freely and don’t have to hold back.

We suggest opening with something along the lines of, “I can’t believe my luck on being able to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I’m immensely

grateful for each and every one of you and honored to be taking up the stage tonight.”

We have drafted a script for your opening statement. Feel free to customize it as per your needs.

Good evening, Distinguished [name], Honorable [name], Mr. Chairman, Respect Host/Hostess, and all our beloved guests.

It is my honor and privilege to have been given the opportunity to present a vote of thanks on this momentous occasion.

I am honored to represent [Company/Organization] on this prestigious [Event] stage.

I’d like to give a respectful nod to the entire [other supporting/sponsoring organization, team, crew, special guests present in the audience] that have stood behind me to make this possible.

My gratitude extends to all the speakers as well as organizers and hosts due to whom we’ve all come together on this eventful night.

Another possible scenario as a host is that you might have to thank the line of speakers that took up the stage during an event. Please find and customize the script for this as follows:

Let’s hear a big round of applause for [name speaker], His/her incredible delivery on [speech topic] leaves us all leaving this Event a little more aware.

Pick up on the central theme and reiterate it as a reminder to the audience and to show the speaker that you were paying attention.

If there are more speakers, then follow suit and consider using these thank you examples:

I’d like to thank our second speaker [name speaker] for her take on [speech topic]. Her view on [central theme] was poignant and worthy of a big round of applause.

Furthermore, let’s also express a sincere appreciation for [name speaker] for gracing our stage with her strong opinions on [speech topic]. [Refer to central theme]

Following up, I’d like to thank [name speaker] for providing such an in-depth analysis of [speech topic]. [Reference]

We are grateful to [name speaker] for having the audience in stitches with her insightful yet light-hearted presentation. [Reference].

I would like to hear a resounding round of applause for [name speaker] for his/her inspirational speech that has surely revved up our drive to achieve more.

We are lucky to have the opportunity to listen to your craft and are leaving here today, all inspired by your beautiful words!

This script is for when you need to express appreciation for the organization that is holding this event. It is usually added to the end of a speech. Feel free to edit it as required.

And last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to [organization] for allowing us to use their beautiful venue.

Our utmost thanks to the logistic support that made this Event the smooth success that it has been. Our appreciation further extends to the technical team and organizers who’ve worked tirelessly for this [fun] evening.

In the case of sponsors: I would also like to extend my thanks to [brand name] as well as [brand name] for their enormous cooperation in making this Event possible.

Mix and match these various styles so that it doesn’t get repetitive as you speak.

As they say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Such is the case with this Event as well. There have been many people working for weeks across multiple group chats and meetings to make this possible.

Getting every detail right and lining up one after other fantastic speakers. Our biggest thank you to the dedicated organizing team for working on every tiny detail and helping create this amazing Event.

I cannot thank everyone enough for their involvement. Each and every one of you is to be credited for your dedication and the willingness to take on the completion outside the realm of their comfort zones!

Read the room and decide the degree of the flair of formality that needs to be adjusted. People will be happy that their efforts are being recognized. Just make sure not to be too ostentatious about it.

The only thing that is worse than not being appreciated for your work is being singled out or left out.

Make sure you think hard about all the people that have put in their time and effort. Are you sure you haven’t missed anybody? How about anybody from the following list?

  • People who sent out invitations
  • Special guests who made time for the Event
  • People behind the technical arrangements
  • The team responsible for location hunting, stage setting and lighting
  • Any musicians or other performing entertainers
  • People in the catering team
  • People from the press and media who are covering the Event

Now all your thank you speech needs is a neat bow to tie it up cleanly. Try this on for size:

Mr. Chairman, ladies, and gentlemen, I would like to thank all of you for being a wonderful audience.

It has been an absolute pleasure to have such a delightful crowd presence. Once again, I’d like to give a big round of applause to all of the speakers for gracing our stage with their well-refined speeches. One last round of applause for all of us here, thank you very much!

Extra Tips to Keep in Mind

While we’ve covered most of our tips, sometimes the simple things can get away from us. And you know what they say, “Better safe than sorry.” So here they are:

A handy tip for appreciation versus criticism is this: When acknowledging people for their good work, always use their name, however, when handing out criticism in front of a crowd, try to generalize as otherwise, you will end up embarrassing people.

Instead of simply thanking your team, use their names if possible in the given time limit. This will make your appreciation seem much more personalized.

Make a list of all the people you’d genuinely like to thank. If you have time, briefly talk about how they’ve helped you in your journey.

Emphasize how important they’ve been and how. Speak from the heart, and it will definitely ring true.

For phrasing, try something along the lines of:

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to give a special thanks to some of the amazing people without whom I cannot imagine standing up here on this stage. Name your supporters and give out your sincere thanks.

If you have extra time, you might want to add in a few lines to thank your supervisor or boss as well. It is customary to make sure they don’t feel left out.

It can be challenging to achieve this as we’re sure any crowd consists of so many people that someone is bound to feel left out.

Your goal is, don’t leave out any of the higher-ups and the important people. But don’t start listing just about everybody just because they are in the crowd. This can reduce the impact of your gratitude for people who have actually helped you.

You’ve given your thanks to so many people who’ve made you who you are. The stage has gotten quite emotional at this point, and your audience is looking at you.

You need to end on a high note. If you simply say your thanks and leave, it can feel incomplete and lacking.

Try to say something inspirational and uplifting. Suppose you’re being recognized for your work.

In that case, you can give your team a motivational boost by saying, “The journey is not yet over, but I can’t imagine being on this ride with any team that is more dedicated or competent than the one at [name].

Let’s wear these tires out and keep this smooth ride going!”

You can also go for dedication to your strongest support or mentor. Something like, “And lastly, I want to leave you with the words of my strongest support, my [name].

When I was full of doubts and insecurities, they’re the ones who said [something inspirational].

This award is for you and your belief in me. I hope I’ve made you proud. Thank you for everything!”

We know, we know, this is your moment on stage. After all, this is such an honor, and there are so many people to thank.

But your audience is eager to get to the catering table! Be considerate, and keep it clear but brief. You don’t want to take the audience through your entire journey.

A good thank you speech is no longer than two and at most three minutes. Use your time well and remember: It is always better to leave them wanting more than getting them to be like, “Get it over with already!”

There are many ways to show someone that you appreciate them. You can buy them a gift. You can write them a thank-you note. And in some cases, you can give a speech in their honor. There are plenty of occasions when you may find yourself in a position to give an appreciation speech.

Jump ahead to these sections:

  • Steps for Writing an Appreciation Speech

Sample Appreciation Speeches

If you’re graduating from high school or college, you might give a speech thanking friends and family members for their support.

If you own a business, you might tell your employees “ thank you for your support ” as part of a speech. Speeches can also be a great way to say “ I appreciate you ” to the people in your life who support you.

Here, we break down the steps that go into crafting an excellent appreciation speech. We also include excerpts of speeches from an assortment of occasions and audiences to draw inspiration from.

Steps for writing an appreciation speech

Step 1: Know Your Audience — And Your Place

Your speech will depend on a variety of factors. But the most important ones to consider are the setting and the crowd. If your speech is a casual toast between friends over a bottle of wine, it will be a lot more casual.

You can rely on personal anecdotes and the language you use will be more personal. If you’re giving a formal speech in front of colleagues though, your tone will be very different. Your speech will be a lot more structured and concise.

Step 2: Create an Outline

Whether your appreciation speech is long or short, it’s always a good idea to craft an outline ahead of time. This will help you make sure you don’t forget to mention anything you want to cover. Overall, most speeches will break down like the following:

  • Introduction: In an introduction, you will let the audience know who you are and give a preface of what you plan to say. For instance, if you’re recognizing a specific person in an appreciation speech, give a quick rundown of why they’re worthy of appreciation.
  • Body: Here, you’ll flesh out the points you made in your introduction. You can give more specific examples of things the subject of your speech has done, and you’ll expand on why those actions deserve gratitude.
  • Conclusion: In this final section, you can reiterate the points you made earlier in the speech.

Step 3: Grab People’s Attention with Gratitude

Start with a strong opening line. In a more formal speech, a quote about gratitude can be an excellent way to set the tone. In a more casual speech, you can avoid a quote. However, you should still stick with the theme of gratitude.

Step 4: Be Personal and Specific

In casual and formal speeches alike, you should feel free to be specific. If you’re giving a speech in honor of one person, you can list all of the things they do that deserve appreciation. If you’re thanking other people for their support, you can list the ways they helped you.

Personal anecdotes are a lot more engaging for listeners. They will also help you feel more connected to your material. The more connected you feel, the more confident you’ll be in speaking. These personal anecdotes can be funny, poignant, or a blend of the two. Again, this will largely be dictated by your audience and the setting of your speech.

Step 5: Practice Makes Perfect

For a casual speech like an appreciation toast, you can probably get away with speaking off the cuff. But any kind of pre-planned appreciation speech definitely benefits from repeated practice.

The more comfortable you are with the speech, the easier it will be for you to deliver it. If you don’t know your speech inside and out, there’s a good chance that you can be tripped up by certain words or turns of phrase.

Step 6: Time Yourself

When you’re practicing your speech, you should also be timing yourself. This means you should have a stopwatch going while you read your speech aloud. Speeches can be deceptive.

A few pages don’t seem like they should take that long to read. If you only read them over in your head, that can reinforce the notion that your speech isn’t that long. But it takes a lot longer to read something aloud than it does reading it to yourself.

If you don’t practice it out loud ahead of time, you may panic in the middle of your actual delivery. If you fear your speech is taking too long, you might start to read faster and faster, which could make the speech incomprehensible. Practicing it out loud can help you hit your ideal time target without having to rush.

Step 7: Keep Your Notes Handy

Even if you’ve practiced your speech until it’s practically etched into your brain, you always want to keep notes or an outline with you. No matter how much you practice, you may find yourself freezing up in the moment. If you don’t have notes handy, you might flounder. On the other hand though, you also shouldn’t keep your whole speech with you.

If you do, you might find yourself relying on it like a security blanket. You may end up just reading the whole speech straight from the paper without engaging with your audience at all. Both ends of the spectrum are too extreme, so it’s best to find a happy medium. Some people just keep their outline with them.

Other people write out the first sentence of each paragraph to jog their memory and help them orient themselves. As you practice, you’ll find the method that works best for you.

Step 8: Do a Test Run in Front of an Audience

Practicing for a speech on your own is important. But once you feel more comfortable with the speech, you should practice in front of someone. Ideally, you’ll rehearse it in front of people several times until you can keep your nervous responses in check.

This means delivering the speech without your heart racing and your speech speeding up to match.

Step 9: Weed Out Any Trouble Spots

Every time you practice your speech, you should be refining it until you can’t improve it any further. One of the big things you should be looking out for is your usage of filler words or speech disfluencies.

Speech disfluencies encompass those little noises like “um”, “er”, and “uh” that we tend to use when we aren’t confident. These can make people tune out because your discomfort makes them feel awkward in turn.

As you practice, pay attention to places where you’re inserting those disfluencies. Keep practicing them until you become comfortable enough to leave them out. Or, rewrite those sections so they come to you more naturally.

Step 10: End On a Good Note

Above all else, remember that this speech is intended to be a positive thing. An appreciation speech should make someone’s day .

Remember to end the speech by reaffirming specifically why you are showing appreciation.

Now that we’ve gone into what makes a good appreciation speech, let’s see some examples. These are just excerpts from longer speeches, but they may help demonstrate the sort of content you might be looking for.

Example of appreciation speech for graduation

Example of appreciation speech for graduation

“As I look around at all my classmates, I realize how much I appreciate you all. Many of us have relied on each other to make it through school and to our graduation day. We supported each other during tough times. We used each other’s examples to fuel us towards getting better grades. When someone was in danger of not graduating, we pulled together to get everyone to the finish line. We all owe a lot to our families for their support. But we should also be sure to appreciate ourselves.”

Example of appreciation speech for friends

“I’d like to take a moment to raise a glass in appreciation for Bethany. Everyone here has one thing in common — Bethany’s friendship. She has always had an uncanny knack for finding people in need of a community and bringing us together. From there, we’ve been able to find the other things that connect us. But if it weren’t for Bethany, most of us would have missed out on enriching, life-changing friendships. Bethany — here’s to you!”

Example of appreciation speech for employees or a boss

“As the year draws to an end, I’m proud to announce that it’s the company’s strongest year yet. We have grown by leaps and bounds and still managed to maintain profitability. Our client satisfaction scores have never been higher. And each and every one of you has played a role in our success.

"I want to thank our sales division for going above and beyond in meeting our clients’ needs. I want to thank our marketing department for creating materials that are very transparent about our mission. I want to thank the managers for leading their divisions by example. I could stand up here and tell you a half dozen things I appreciate about every person in this room, but I’m sure you’re all ready to hit the buffet line. So I’ll conclude by saying that I appreciate all of your contributions, and am so proud to be on a team with each and every one of you.”

Example of appreciation speech for mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa

Quote for example of appreciation speech for mom, dad, grandma, or grandpa

“Hello everyone! I’d like to thank all of you for coming here today in celebration of Grandma Joy and Grandpa Bill’s 50th wedding anniversary. As most of you know, I’ve never had a relationship last more than a year. Fifty years is an absolutely mind-boggling level of commitment to someone like me.

"There are so many reasons to love and appreciate Joy and Bill. There’s all the basic grandparent stuff. Joy taught me how to make amazing cookies and Bill taught me how to change a tire. But they also took me in when my home life was less than ideal. And when they realized some of my friends also had difficult lives at home, they opened up their den as a safe space. On any given day, you could find at least two or three misfit teenagers sleeping on their fold-out couch.

"Grandma and Grandpa, I’ll never be able to let you know how much I appreciate you. I know you probably don’t think you even did anything special. But you have made so many lives worth living thanks to your compassion and generosity. Thank you for always being there for others, just like you’ve been there for each other for five decades.”

Show People You Appreciate Them Through Meaningful Speeches

There are many ways to show gratitude . An appreciation speech is just one of them. Whether you’re giving a short toast or a lengthy speech, you can communicate your gratitude for someone.

These steps and examples should help you craft an excellent speech. Ultimately though, just remember to be sincere and personal. That’s the real key to successfully showing appreciation.

The speaker might devote much attention to the event, to the people who came to it, and to the people who contributed to the achievement of the award. Thank you speech for award sample can provide an example of how to build a speech for accepting an award for any kind of accomplishment and in any environment.

Dear colleagues, I am very glad to have a chance to deliver my speech on such a pleasant occasion. It is a large honor for me to receive an award for the implementation of the most successful project of this year. I am strongly grateful for this high recognition of the work that was done as far as I believe that every project deserved to be distinguished with this award.

Being honest, the way to this award and project realization was rather long and not easy. Starting from the moment when the project was only one small idea and until today, much work has been done. Bringing the idea into life required much effort, and many challenges arose on the way. However, every problem that appeared on the way was solved, and every obstacle was overcome. The importance of the project striving to ease the lives of a large number of people was the most powerful stimulus and the driving force, leading to impressive results. However, all of that would have been impossible without the coordinated work of the team that collaborated in order to overpass the barriers and to make the idea function properly.

Here, I would like to use the chance to express my deep gratitude to the members of the team who were working on this project for the last year. I believe that every participant of the project has made a weighty contribution to the project. It would not be an exaggeration when I say that it is an honor to me to be a manager of such a professional and highly devoted team. Our collective work has resulted in impressive results, and it is an achievement of each team member and project participant. The solution of problems, coming up with new ideas, developing plans were the results of common work and constant collaboration.

I must say now that the team has transformed into a family and our project became our child. I remember active and fierce discussions that resulted in new and well-developed decisions. I also remember time spent in the office after the working day ended as far as inspiration came then. I remember the support and friendly approach on the side of team members and willingness to help each other. I remember persuading the high management about the importance of changes, and I am happy that it was accomplished. Those were the great moments that taught me much, and I believe that they made the implementation of the project possible.

Today I am grateful to everyone who participated in the realization of the project. I believe that the work that was done within this project deserves an award, as well as everyone who devoted their time and effort to it. This project was a great starting point for a larger one, and I hope that it would ultimately result in an even larger success due to collaboration and creative potential. Thank you very much!

It already felt like a win when I found out that I am even being considered for this honorary award.

First of all, let me start by saying I am so grateful to be standing here in front of you with this award. Thank you to the senior authorities of this prestigious institution to recognize my work in all these years. All the contenders for this award, I look up to all of you. You have set the benchmark of excellence for me, and to be on the same list as you were already a great achievement for me.Teaching is always considered to be a selfless profession and many don't even acknowledge our efforts so the fact that our institution hosts an award ceremony for teachers is really commendable. We all are aware that teaching is a tough profession but when the administration, teachers, and parents award us with such a special honour it really solidifies our belief and boosts our morale to continue to do good work.

I am fortunate to start my journey as a teacher and offer my services to this institution. This institution and the incredible teachers who work here have taught me everything I know today. I have learned so much by just observing your work ethics, dedication, and commitment to your profession. I would like to give a special mention to all my colleagues. Your sincerity has inspired me to step up my game and to better. Being a teacher is no child's play, and it has been a long road to reach this point.

There were a lot of deadlines to be met, innovative and creative ideas brainstorming for keeping the children interested. The fun part of it all was the challenge which seemed difficult but always taught me new ways to deal with a problem or a new environment. It feels really great when we see our efforts give great tangible results. And it was a matter of time and constant work and perseverance to get here.

And last but not least I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the parents who have been so understanding and cooperative during the academic year and actually making changes in the schedule whenever there was an extracurricular event. Your tremendous support for all our staff has made this journey far more enjoyable and fulfilling, I dedicate this award to all of you.

I would like to thank my superiors who thought I was deserving of this beautiful trophy.

The teachers I was contending with are in no way less deserving, in fact, it was because of your hard work and commitment that I was motivated to do better. So I would request everyone to give a huge round of applause to all the teachers who always strive to shift the goal post each year and reach new heights.

Being a teacher is not easy, it is an unpredictable one and each day is new with the students. And must always be on the lookout for finding new ways to solve problems as each day presents itself with a new set of challenges. My seniors and my colleagues have helped me navigate the uncharted waters with so much patience and grace. I am so grateful to everyone who believed in me and helped me in my journey.

The most important ones being the parents, who have always supported me and all the teaching staff and considered our feedback valuable enough. I am here to deliver my speech on this occasion; it’s a great honour for me to be given accolades and award for the execution of the most successful and highly important project of this year. I am truly obliged for this great honour and recognition given by the management and the Board.

Being honest, the journey towards the project accomplishment and subsequently towards this award was not easy; in fact it was very long. Right from the moment when the idea was conceived to the outline of the project which was initiated later on and until today, a lot of work has been done. Transforming the idea to the real output required a good deal of efforts and various challenges came in the way. I was not alone though, I had my colleagues who walked along with me and my managers and supervisors who provided unconditional support to me. Above all, I am thankful to the Board members, CEO and the management who showed so much of trust and faith in me, which was the constant energy boost for me.

Together, we overcame every problem and challenges which have now become the milestones for us. The project was also very close to my heart because it’s about innovating means and methods to save energy and water and ultimately support sustainability. I am very glad to announce that we did it!

Initially, I assumed, it was really difficult to accomplish the desired result within the time that we had stipulated to ourselves. But, I would say, it was all team work and the never-ending belief in our hard work and honest objective. I would like to utilise this platform to express my deep gratefulness to the members of the project who worked relentlessly on this project for one year. Needless to say, every participant of the project has contributed equally to the project.

Being the Project Manager, I am greatly honoured to say that the team had converted into a family; our project being our child. I still remember the brainstorming sessions and the candid and ferocious discussions, sometimes at odd hours which ultimately resulted into the fruitful decisions. I am sure all my colleagues and team members do remember the time spent in the office after the working hours as and when an inspiration came in. Despite all the odds, we were certain about one thing that we were going to achieve success. The most memorable part of this project was to convince the higher management to introduce changes in manufacturing processes and methods. Though it was challenging, but I am glad that the management understood the essence of the proposal and thus our project was born.

The entire journey was a learning experience for me and with the success of this project; I am more energised and charged up to take up new and challenging projects which would work in the benefit of my organisation and the environment.

Once again, thank you everyone!

Have a great day!

Thank You Speech for Award – 2

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen!

First of all, I would like to thank the Jury members for selecting our company as the ‘ Best Employer of the Year ’ and honouring us with this award. Well, this is a very proud moment for me as it took approximately 5 years to reach this platform. But let me tell you, I didn’t walk alone; I was accompanied by all the valuable staff members and the dedicated employees who have worked day-in and day-out to make the company one of the most recognisable brands in India. Here, I would especially like to thank the customers too, who believed in us and gave us continuous business which motivated us to work harder to give them the best services in our capacity.

Being awarded with the best employer award means a lot for me because it means our employees love our organization and they are happy with us. Every year, we internally conduct a bi-annual employee survey to determine what we are lacking at and what we are good at. The employees are only asked to fill the survey without mentioning their name or department. We maintain this fairness so that we can actually work upon the weaknesses. I especially thank all the employees who had been very honest with the survey in sharing their feelings with us, because it motivated us to do better for them and thus, we are here today receiving this award.

Since last 5 years, our company has not only worked upon enhancing the product and services we offer, but the management and HR have also worked upon making the work culture better for our internal employees too. Our company works upon 5 basic philosophies: Stability, Compensation, Respect, Health Benefits and Work-Life Balance for the employees.

I would like to take some moment today to especially thank the Human Resource Department and the Management who have worked with much dedication and formulated policies that not just work for the benefit of the customers, but also helps employees maintaining their work-life balance and thus meeting the company’s common objective.

The last 5 years have been a great journey for us and we have also seen our due share of ups and downs in the company. The first two years, we were busy with establishing ourselves and creating a brand name and image and the next 3 years we worked in maintaining the image that we established. The company has also seen the downturn for 1 continuous year, but the constant and unconditional support that I have got from the staff, management, and the employees was outstanding, which motivated me to come over the challenge.

I would also like to mention the name of the shareholders, who have always trusted and believed us and have continued to invest in our company.

Last but not the least of course, winning this honour wouldn’t have been possible without my family’s moral support and inspiration; they are truly my backbone.

I sincerely thank each one of you for your continuous support and also all the internal and external stakeholders who are directly or indirectly involved in the making and functioning of our company.

With this note, I’ll end my speech with the promise that there are more such awards to follow.

Thank you Speech for Birthday

I am grateful to everyone who has always been a part of my journey, from my family to friends, from boss to my team and everyone. It is a pleasure to witness this beautiful moment in the presence of you all. On stage it is me who is taking over this award but on backend there are many people along with the great power of god who have enabled me to put in efforts and make me capable of getting this award. Each one of you has enabled me to bring the ideas into reality. My strength always increased on dealing with the challenges and overcoming them.

I cannot thank god enough for making my existence fruitful and ensuring that my focus drives through dedication throughout the deeds that I do for myself and the people related to me. This award is a symbol of the blessings that I have received during my journey till now. I am grateful of having held this award as a return towards my attempt towards my tasks with utmost purity and dedication.

Many challenges and problem appeared in the journey but with time and dedicated efforts each of them got solved and hence it is today that you all can see how blissful smile is accompanying me this evening. Each of my team members deserves this equivalent award for all the day to day tasks attempted by them. We always aim at working as a family and have a united focus on our dreams which enables us to work and cope with higher expectations. Our collective team efforts have resulted in such incredible results, and it is a great achievement of each individual team member.

I am glad to clear all the scrutiny levels and have the privilege of selected amongst all for this award. I cannot thank my parents enough for the education privilege that they have given me; without this it would have never been possible to reach such heights and stand in front of such skilled and well qualified people. This award is surely a reward for the past tasks successfully done by me and my team. But on the other hand, this reward will be a big time motivation for the projects coming our way. This will be the encouragement and rise in our enthusiasm for doing the best and reaching more great heights that make us eligible for receiving award every time at this huge platform of recognition.

My sincere gratitude to all for the tremendous ongoing encouragements that have throughout enabled me to put in the efforts and all time dedication for attainment of wonderful things. Collated team achievements much more mesmerizing than the partial achievements achieved through alone efforts. Thank you team for every time that you have held my hand to take everything together from all ends and make our deeds capable of reaching this huge stage.

Thank You everyone!

Business thank you speech

Let's write an employee appreciation speech.

By:  Susan Dugdale  | Last modified: 04-21-2021

There'll be those times, (hopefully a lot of them: many, many more than once a year on Employee Appreciation Day ), when as an employer or a manager you want to formally thank your team for a job well done in a speech.

To help you do that, here's an example employee appreciation, or business thank you, speech to use as a template. It covers off all the areas you'll most likely want to comment on or acknowledge.

At the bottom of the page, under the speech, you'll find a printable of the template to download.  I hope it's useful to you!

Graphic: Employee Appreciation quote. Text: Take time to appreciate employees and they will reciprocate in a thousand ways. Bob Nelson.

How to make this speech work best for you

If you've never given a thank you speech of this type before the best place to begin is by reading my notes on the benefits of giving thanks, and the most effective way to do it. Once you've done that you'll be ready to get maximum benefit from the template for your staff, your company, and yourself.

Be specific, direct, generous and frequent with your thanks

Thank you. They're two simple, yet extraordinarily powerful, words.

Studies show regularly and sincerely showing appreciation and gratitude for all the positive efforts employees make delivers benefits to employers and employees alike.  And focused specific acknowledgement is even much more effective than generalized.

The benefits of giving thanks include:

  • Increased job satisfaction leading to increased motivation, innovation and productivity
  • Increased loyalty which in turn means less loss of staff
  • Increased happiness and health for everyone in the work place, in their homes, and communities.

For more please see leader of the O.C. Tanner Institute, David Sturt's, article for Harvard Business Review:  The Easiest Thing You Can Do to Be a Great Boss ,  outlining the results of "two separate but recent studies involving nearly 3,500 employees, from startups to Fortune 100 companies."

And this article:  Giving thanks can make you happier  from Harvard Health Publishing, Harvard Medical School.

Do you know the difference between generalized and specific praise?

To make what you say count, to make it stick in minds and memories, praise, thanks and acknowledgement needs to be specific.

For example saying, "Thanks everyone for a job well done.", while pleasant, is generalized.

Who does it really apply to? What is the job being referred to?  Is everyone being praised regardless of the size and value of their contribution? Even the guy in accounts who bunked off as soon as he thought no one was looking?

The comment, although nice, is wide open. And because it is so broad, it is easily discounted as having very little value.

Contrast that with: "Thanks Robbie. Those extra hours you put in night after night for two whole weeks last March to get to the bottom of the problem with our analysis of data from the laboratories were a life saver. Your effort got the job back on track. We couldn't be more grateful for your perseverance and initiative."

This is significantly better.  You've let Robbie know his work is being seen and valued.

You've also let others listening know which is important for his self-esteem. To be a member of a group where excellence is openly and genuinely acknowledged makes everybody feel proud. This is effective, memorable praise. Something worth striving for.

We are people, and we want, and need, to be acknowledged by the significant folk in our lives: work, friends and family, for what we do well.

These are your next 7 steps:

1. Read the speech through to get an idea of what is covered, and how.

2. Scroll to the foot of the page to download the speech template.

3. Take sections out or, add pieces in, to fit your own situation.  For instance, you may not want to talk about challenges. So that section is cut out.

4. Replace all the purple highlighted words inside the brackets eg.  { Fill in project(s) name here. Example:  Data Digitization Project}  with what you want to say about your company and your people.

Please note - Some of the speech segments start with an explanation. These have been highlighted in light green and are not part of the speech itself. Eg:  Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

5. Once you have completed everything, say the speech out loud and record it.

6. Play it back and listen for any areas where you need to make changes. For instance:

  • Do the transitions work?
  • Are you repeating yourself?
  • Have you missed an important section out?
  • Have you mentioned everybody you can and have you been clear about why they are being called out?
  • Is the language too formal? Or too informal?
  • Is it too long?

7. Make all of the changes needed. Then record your speech once more and listen again. Repeat the process until you are satisfied.

Example business thank you speech

Friends and colleagues,

We all know why we are here today, so I'm beginning with the obvious: a simple, heartfelt, and well-deserved THANK YOU!

For those of you who took on the {Fill in project(s) name here. Example: Data Digitization Project} , I couldn't be more grateful! {Name some people you want to acknowledge specifically here. Example: Sandy, Darren and Joe} I know it wasn't easy at times.

Add a brief description of at least one of the challenges endured.

Standing on your feet all day on the cold concrete floor of {Change name to fit. Example: ABCD's Record room} instead of sitting at your desks in our warm, comfortably cozy and friendly {Change name to fit. Example: Quest} office, isn't anybody's idea of fun.

Change championship

Acknowledge the knock-on effect: how everybody, even those indirectly involved, was asked to accommodate and adapt for the duration of the project.

The same gratitude goes to those of you who were on this project part time. Thank you for taking time away from your other important tasks so that we could keep pace with our customer's goals and deadlines on this one.

Whether it was cooperating through {Enter specific examples of ways people worked to allow the project to go on. Examples: carpooling like Jo and Liz, Mike and Bob offering to double up on a few of the more tedious tasks, or simply through putting in some extra unexpected time that the project demanded like Fred and his two faithful side kicks: Dawn and Bruce,} , your efforts were appreciated.

Accountability

Acknowledging how responsibly the project was undertaken and the effect that had.

Through all of you coming in day after day and always putting your best foot forward, we were able to achieve so much. At the same time our client was assured of our commitment to the highest quality of work.

We did this by {Enter specific examples to illustrate. Examples: following the strict quality work standards set by Bill's team, being willing to work closely and cooperatively to fill in any gaps that arose, (Yes, that's a nod to Rose for stepping in.) , taking the initiative to go back over some aspect of the work that occasionally required double-checking. (Thanks Hugh.)}

I want you to know they are delighted with the accuracy we achieved. Without your shared pride and accountability, we simply could not have been so satisfactorily, so triumphantly, successful.

Acknowledging how people worked together.

As is true with any project encompassing so many different aspects, there were some ups and downs, but that's to be expected. Whether {Enter specific examples of team work. Examples: someone needed help analyzing, or data compilation was falling behind, or someone simply needed a ride to or from the office} ... everyone pulled together and worked as a team.

I know how much time and energy this assignment demanded, and I deeply appreciate all of your efforts, both individually, and collectively.

Customer focus

Acknowledging the result of satisfying/fulfilling the customer's need.

Merely completing this project was a hurdle in and of itself. However, congratulations are in order to each and everyone of you for a job so well done!

We've always known about your willingness to consistently go above and beyond. Now our client has experienced it too.

In fact, they are so satisfied they are currently in the process of retaining our services for another project!

Very few things speak more loudly about a company than a client wanting to be a repeat customer. So, not only can each of you be very proud of yourselves but we can all be proud that everyone on the {Enter the name of your company here. Example: Quest} Team will continue to benefit as a result of your contributions!

Thank you all, sincerely, for being true professionals, for being inspirational! You are a great team. This successful outcome, the result of all your hard work and dedication, is down to you. And, lastly thank you for the pleasure and privilege of working with you! Congratulations, once again!

Chad Dyer from MemesBams says:

"Saying 'thank you' to acknowledge or encourage desired behaviors at work is very effective, and a form of what’s called positive reinforcement.

Research has proven top performing teams and leaders give each other more than five positive comments for every criticism.

Acknowledging good behavior and actions actually reinforces and drives more good behavior. Goodness becomes self-perpetuating!

It’s also proven that positive reinforcement is more effective at changing behavior then dishing out negative feedback.

This holds true for both your colleagues, direct reports, and YES even your Boss. So, say 'thank you' more often through a speech, email, card, or private conversation.

* The story behind this business thank you speech

It arrived one day through my contact form - almost in the form it is now. A complete speech, from a complete stranger!

I emailed him to thank him for his thank you speech, and to ask if I could post it on my site. This is what he said:

Ms. Dugdale,

You're welcome for the contribution. Truth be told, as I was writing what I needed to be a "business" or "professional" type thank you speech, I was scouring the web for some well-placed anecdotes, tips to improve upon, or general all-around good advice to include in a thank you speech.

Surprisingly, incredibly difficult to find. Google may churn out billions of "results," but none were applicable. So, as I continued to compose my own, I happened across your website. I found it helpful in terms of examples of speech writing structure, some main points to include, etc.

Long story short, when I had finished it the other night, I just thought I'd pass it on when I saw that that was an option on your useful website. You may certainly post it as a "sample business thank you speech" on your page if you wish. Since, as I said above, they were incredibly difficult to come by.

If it helps someone else who, perhaps, has never written anything like that before and now finds themselves in the position of needing to, I'd be glad if my example could help them.

It seemed fitting to send it to you after using some of your tips to help me complete it.

Thank you for your rather enthusiastic reply! It was both a surprise and a delight for me. I'm glad to hear my speech brought a smile to your face too :)

Kind regards,

How to Write a Letter To Say Thank You

Writing a thank-you letter is a thoughtful way to express your gratitude for a gift, favor, or act of kindness. While it may seem like a simple task, there are a few key elements to keep in mind to ensure your letter is both meaningful and well-written.

1. Start with a Salutation

Begin your letter with a formal salutation, such as “Dear [Recipient’s Name].” If you are writing to someone you know well, you may use a more informal salutation, such as “Hi [Recipient’s Name].”

2. Express Your Gratitude

The first paragraph of your letter should clearly state your purpose for writing. Begin by expressing your sincere thanks for the gift, favor, or act of kindness. Be specific about what you are grateful for, and use descriptive language to convey your appreciation.

3. Share Your Thoughts and Feelings

In the second paragraph, you can elaborate on your gratitude by sharing your thoughts and feelings about the gift or favor. Explain how it has impacted you or how it has made a difference in your life. Be personal and heartfelt in your expression.

4. Use Specific Examples

To make your letter more meaningful, include specific examples of how the gift or favor has benefited you. This could include sharing a story or anecdote that illustrates your appreciation.

5. Offer a Reciprocal Gesture

If appropriate, offer a reciprocal gesture to show your appreciation. This could be a small gift, a favor, or simply an offer to return the kindness in the future.

6. Close with a Sincere Sentiment

End your letter with a sincere sentiment that conveys your continued gratitude. You can use a traditional closing, such as “Sincerely” or “With thanks,” or you can choose a more personal closing that reflects your relationship with the recipient.

7. Proofread and Send

Before sending your letter, take the time to proofread it carefully for any errors in grammar or spelling. Once you are satisfied with your letter, send it to the recipient and await their response.
