Sample College Admission Essay 1 with Feedback

Introduction.

We've discussed in a general sense what makes a good essay, but it's always helpful to look at specific examples and hear how admissions officers evaluated them. Included below is a sample essay. It's well-written and avoids the common admission essay pitfalls discussed in previous videos (listing off accomplishments like a resume, writing about someone else instead of making it personal, etc.), so it's not simple to know how an admissions officer will react. Read the essay, and then proceed to the follow-up video to hear from admissions.

Sample essay 1

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you (500 word limit).

A misplaced foot on the accelerator instead of the brakes made me the victim of someone’s careless mistake. Rushing through the dark streets of my hometown in an ambulance, I attempted to hold back my tears while two supportive Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) comforted me. Although I suffered a minor knee injury, the trauma of that accident still lingers.

Fast forward six years to the present. Now I am sitting in the back of the ambulance, a rookie EMT, with my purple gloves on, stethoscope around my neck, and a red medical bag in hand. I am also making sure we have the proper medical equipment stocked, including neck collars and long body boards. As I step out of the ambulance, a bitter breeze nips at my face. Shattered glass, two crushed car hoods, and traffic everywhere, the scene is put into perspective as I can finally see what is happening. I stop in my tracks. It is my accident all over again.

“Get the collars and boards, there is a possible back injury,” my partner whispers to me. I fetch the items, still attempting to deal with my conflicting emotions. Using the help of five other EMTs, we extricate the victim from the car and secure him to the stretcher. While in the ambulance, I realize now that circumstances have been reversed. This time, clutching the patient’s hand, I tried to soothe him, and he slowly calms down. I keep my composure and actively tried to help the patient feel as comfortable as I did. Keeping all of his personal belongings close to me, we wheel him into the busy emergency room and transfer him safely. As we leave, he looked into my eyes and I could feel his sincere gratitude. Rather than being an innocent victim, like the current patient was, I am now the rescuer.

Even though I felt the horrid memories rushing back, I kept my duties as a rescuer in the forefront of my mind. Keeping my cool in the face of extreme pressure I came out of the call a changed person: someone who can see a problem, regardless of any bias I may have, and focus only on what is happening at that instant. Confidently facing my own terrors, I felt as if conquering my fears allowed me to face my duties with a grounded and compassionate outlook.

Tears stream, limbs hurt, children cry: I am there, with a smile on my face, a stethoscope around my neck, compassion in my heart, happy to help and proud to serve.

And such a move always comes with a risk– risk of failing , risk of being ridiculed, or at best misunderstood by your peers who cannot comprehend your intentions, and prefer to sail on the waves of conformity .

Hiring managers are always in a hunt for exceptional people. Those who can think out of the box , bring new ideas onboard, and make a difference in the company . They cannot employ only such people, since it would not work. Anarchy would rule the place. But they always seek this one in ten or one in hundred employee, a person who will set the direction, someone the crowds will follow, someone who will inspire the others. And that’s one of the reasons why they inquire about risk taking in the interviews–about BIG risks.

Let’s have a look at 7 sample answers to this intriguing question. I tried to include on my list answers for a variety of situations and personalities , so hopefully at least one of them may resonate with you, and with the message you try to convey in the interviews–which can be also aversion to taking risks . 7 sample answers to “Tell me about the biggest risk you have taken” interview question

• I took a big risk in my last job of a marketing manager . Decided to come up with an innovative advertising campaign, something customers weren’t used to. But we had no historical data to backup the plans, and to project the success of the campaign. It took me a long time to convince the manager to give me a green light. But I eventually succeeded, and we went on with the campaign. We definitely stirred the waters of marketing industry, and people took notice –both the public and the professionals from the advertising business. At the end of the day though, the ads did not convert as we hoped they’d , and the campaign turned out with a negative ROI. And I lost my job , which is one of the reasons why I am here today. Would I take the same risk again? I probably would, because I do not aim for mediocrity, and in my view the potential benefit outweighed the risk . My employer seemingly had a different opinion.
• I am taking the biggest risk right now, changing my career . Look, I’ve earned great in IT. Close to one hundred thousands dollars annually. I’ve earned my reputation in the field, and got some new offers each year. But life isn’t only about making money . I experienced a burnout, and could not stand staring at the computer screen any longer. So I decided to throw fifteen years of professional experience out of the window , and look for a job in some NGO instead. Because I want to work with people, and I want to see meaningful purpose in my work . Certainly it is a big risk. Maybe I even won’t get the job, or won’t manage my expenses with the salary I will earn. But it is a risk I had to take , unless I wanted to feel miserable for the rest of my life.
• I haven’t taken any big risks in my life. And I want to tell you I am no risk taker. Carefully considering every decision, I always try to do the best thing for myself, my family, my employer. The jobs I’ve had up to this point did not really force me into situations that would entail some big risks. And I am grateful for it, because as I’ve already said, I am rather risk averse . And I’ve read your job ad carefully, and believe it is a great match for my skills and personality, and a great step in my professional career . Do not see any big risks here either to be honest.
• I’m just 21 years old . Didn’t really have time for some big risks in life, pursuing my education, trying to prepare for professional career. Sure, risk is a part of life, but I also believe that we should not take things too seriously . I pursued some relationship in the past that perhaps wasn’t an easy one for me, and I faced a disapproval from my family . But I really loved the person, and decided to go against the will of my parents. They were eventually right, the relationship didn’t work out, and my partner eventually ended up in prison… But I am still glad that I went after it , because I have my conscience clear, and the questions “what if?” does not haunt me in my dreams. I gave it a shot, took risks, it didn’t work. That’s it. Let’s see what risks await me in my corporate career.
• Starting my own business was the biggest risk I’ve taken. Of course, I made the decision before the pandemics . Had a clear business plan, made my calculations, everything looked great on paper. So I took a loan and went all in . And things looked promising at the start, though I was working for 80 hours each week… But you know what happened then. Pandemics arrived, it was a terrible blow to hospitality industry , I lost my income overnight, but the bills kept piling up, there was the loan and everything. So I eventually had to close the operation, sell what I could sell, bend my head, and accept that I would join the ranks of employees again. But you know what? Some people may ridicule me and laugh at me , saying I wasted money and years of my life. But those are the people who never tried anything, and in fact they envy me, and would give anything to have my courage…
• Maybe the biggest risk I am taking right now . I’ve got an offer from XYZ company just few days ago, but I decided to reject it , because you are my first choice . Sure enough, I have confidence in my abilities, and I knew I had a decent chance to succeed . And I believe my risk will eventually pay off, because I like your offer and your working environment more than I like what they offered me in the last place. Before anything can happen, however, I have to succeed in this interview. Anyway, in my opinion we should not accept the first offer, in any sphere of life. If we want to thrive and live the life we want to live, it is sometimes necessary to take risks and refuse offers we are given.
• I cannot remember a single one . Without a doubt we take some risks every day at work, simply because we do not have things fully under our control. Many factors come into play, and we can impact just some of them. But I always try to consider all variables , carefully gathering information, making informed decisions . Each decision entails a bit of risk–because of the variables which we cannot control. But I try to avoid taking big risks, and I believe I’ve succeeded to do it up to this point in my career, and hope to keep the same trend in your company.

Jobs for risk takers and jobs for risk-averse people

As a rule of a thumb, when they inquire about taking risks in an interview, it means the job will entail some risks . But it does not necessarily mean that they are looking for someone who loves to gamble , someone who isn’t afraid to bet everything on one card. Think about the job you will have with them. What kind of decisions you will make on a daily basis? What risks will they entail?

Think about it for a while, and try to find out what kind of employee they are looking for, and what attitude to risk you should show in your interview. If you aren’t sure, however, you can opt for a “safe” answer. Mentioning some risk you took in the past you show them that you can take risks, if necessary. But you elaborate on it, saying that you always try to make informed decisions , and avoid unnecessary risks for the business or for the employees…

The first essay option on the pre-2013 Common Application asked applicants to  Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

Although this option is not one of the seven essay options on the current Common Application, prompt #5 overlaps quite a bit with the question above. It asks, " Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others."

• Make sure your essay does more than narrate an experience; it needs to reveal something about you.

"Evaluate"—Make Sure Your Response is Analytical

Read the prompt for option #1 carefully — you need to "evaluate" an experience, achievement, risk or dilemma. Evaluation requires you to think critically and analytically about your topic. The admissions folks are not asking you to "describe" or "summarize" an experience (although you'll need to do this a little). The heart of your essay needs to be a thoughtful discussion of how the experience affected you. Examine how the experience made you grow and change as a person.

A "Significant" Experience Can Be Small

Many students concerned about the word "significant." At 18 years old, they feel that nothing "significant" has ever happened to them. This isn't true. If you're 18 years old, even if your life has been smooth and comfortable, you've had significant experiences. Think about the first time you challenged authority, the first time you disappointed your parents, or the first time you pushed yourself to do something outside of your comfort zone. A significant risk can be choosing to study drawing; it doesn't have to be about rappelling into an icy chasm to rescue a baby polar bear.

Don't Brag About an "Achievement"

The admissions team gets a lot of essays from students about the winning goal, the record-breaking run, the brilliant job in the school play, the stunning violin solo, or the amazing job they did as team captain. These topics are fine for an admissions essay, but you want to be very careful to avoid sounding like a braggart or egoist. The tone of such essays is critical. An essay that says "the team never could have won without me" is going to make you sound self-absorbed and ungenerous. A college doesn't want a community of self-consumed egoists. The best essays have a generosity of spirit and an appreciation of community and team effort.

An "Ethical Dilemma" Doesn't Need to be Newsworthy

Think broadly about what can be defined as an "ethical dilemma." This topic doesn't need to be about whether or not to support war, abortion, or capital punishment. In fact, the huge topics that dominate national debate will often miss the point of the essay question—the "impact on you." The most difficult ethical dilemmas facing high school students are often about high school. Should you turn in a friend who cheated? Is loyalty to your friends more important than honesty? Should you risk your own comfort or reputation to do what you think is right? Tackling these personal dilemmas in your essay will give the admissions folks a good sense of who you are, and you will be addressing issues that are central to being a good campus citizen.

Reveal Your Character

Always keep in mind why colleges require admissions essays. Sure, they want to see that you can write, but the essay isn't always the best tool for that (it's obviously easy to get professional help with grammar and mechanics). The main purpose of the essay is so that the school can learn more about you. It's the only place on the application where you can really demonstrate your character, your personality, your sense of humor, and your values. The admissions folks want to find evidence that you will be a contributing member of the campus community. They want to see evidence of a team spirit, humility, self-awareness and introspection. An essay on a significant experience works well for these goals if you thoughtfully explore the "impact on you."

Attend to Grammar and Style

Even the best conceived essay will fall flat if it is filled with grammatical errors or has an unengaging style. Work to avoid wordiness, passive voice, vague language, and other common stylistic problems .

Write a narrative essay about a risk you have taken.

Being an 18-year-old teenager has been the most memorable time in my life. Although a variety of new things came to me, I was excited to deal with all the changes. Not only was that time hard to forget, but so far it has also been the toughest time for me. I had to choose the universities I wanted to enroll in cautiously, then I sat for the most challenging examination in a student’s life - the national entrance exam. After a short period, I received a notification that I was admitted into HCM City’s Open University. I was so curious about how I was going to live in a different town and adapt to new environment. It is not frequently straightforward and smooth to move into a new city as you expected it to. The first obstacle I met was finding an appropriate hostel to live in during the time I was studying here. Because of not having a motorbike, I had to find a place which was near my college. I could not afford the hostel’s price myself, so I had to look for a roommate to share the costs. It could be hazardous because I could not know whether they were good people. Accordingly, I decided to live with my schoolmate to maintain my safety. I have always been told that HCM City is so bustling and congested that there will be myriad of frauds, scams and social crimes such as robbery, pick-pocket and even murdering. Any time I got on a bus or went to a crowded place, I must always be vigilant and hold my bag in front of me so as not to get pick-pocketed. Additionally, it was absolutely a nightmare for me to come home late in the evening. Despite the fact that there were many people on the way home, I still felt afraid and could not believe in anyone but myself. Traffic would be another issue I felt unaccustomed to when I lived in HCM City. The traffic here is so hasty, insane and complicated that a plenty of accidents occur every day. I felt like I was risking my life every time I got out. As a result of some people who did not obey the laws, I had to be more judicious to avoid unwanted dangers. They crossed the red light and went too fast, which made the traffic worse. Once I was shouted at by a man who did not want to wait in the congestion then he rode on the sidewalk and did not even care about the people walking there. Although it has been a year since I stayed in HCM City, I still felt hard to get used to the traffic here. After living independently for virtually a year, I was eventually able to take good care of myself, become more confident and learn how to protect myself from evildoers. I missed the time when I was a little daughter of my parents a lot, but I knew I had to stay strong. In spite of facing lots of new changes in this city, I am gradually getting used to them now. It was hard for me to adapt at first, but I still had my family standing by me and supporting me. I felt so blessed to have them in my life.

1. Don’t regurgitate your resume.

You have already listed your accomplishments and awards in your application. Don’t use this precious essay space to reiterate your accomplishments.

2. Answer the question.

The question says “Evaluate” not “Describe”. The Merriam-Webster definition of “evaluate” is “to determine the significance, worth, or condition of, usually by careful appraisal and study.” Thus, the majority of the essay should be determining the significance of this experience, not just describing it. In high school you learn that when you write an evaluative essay you must start with a clear stance, a judgment. In addition, you need to have evidence to support your stance. For this type of essay, strong evidence would be past experiences, people, and events in your life that can back up this judgment. Most of the time, the experience, achievement, risk, or dilemma is just the tip of an iceberg made up of a history of lessons learned, wisdom gained, and past experiences that combined to bring you to that point.

For instance, let’s say your significant risk was running for president of your student body. In order to truly evaluate this risk, you need to provide details about your past experiences, your surroundings, and the people who have influenced you in order to show the impact it had on you. For some students, it wasn’t a risk because public speaking is a cinch for them. For other students, it is a huge risk because the fear of rejection and public speaking are their biggest fears.

Also, don’t forget the “it’s impact on you” portion. Most students who truly “evaluate” the significant experience and not just describe it do in fact naturally include the impact it has on them. This could be a good way to determine if you are truly evaluating or just describing this significant experience.

3. Focus on 1 thing.

Though the essay question lists several items, it only asks for one particular thing whether it is an experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma. The key word in this question is “or”. Many students incorporate several things and this dilutes the answer in addition to not properly answering the question.

4. Keep it focused and detailed.

To piggyback on the above point, the reason why the question only asks you for one significant, experience, achievement…etc is because you only have a limited amount of words to describe it. Focus on just one thing, and back it up with specific and detailed examples.

5. What is the purpose of the question?

Like the “ Person who influenced you ” essay question , this question is once again a way for the admissions officers to discover your character. Look back at yesterday’s blog post to see a list of values and attributes that admissions officers want to see in a prospective freshman.

6. Don’t write about an ethical dilemma that will incriminate you.

I recently read an essay where the student talks about snorting cocaine and trying other drugs. By the end of the essay, I was emotionally moved; however, I don’t know if every admission officer would want to admit a student that has used drugs. It is very hard for students with a criminal record to get into the nation’s top colleges so I would generally advise students not to admit an act that was in violation of the law.

It is a well-known fact that taking risks can result in two things: success of failure. Some people say that taking risks brings to new very important findings, for example, in sports or science; others argue that taking risks can cause failure or even death, for example in finance or everyday life.

Some say that taking risks is inherent in people, and other people claim it contradicts instinct of self-preservation. To my mind, taking risks is a bit of all mentioned above, but there is no doubt that for each person taking risks is not the same.

I think that taking risks is an important and inevitable part of our lives; we all take risks, major or minor. I agree that if people want to succeed and achieve more they have to risk, at least, from time to time, or as Schwalbe puts it – to try something new (Schwalbe). I assume that all the athletes take risks to establish their records; they are likely to “40-30-30 Rule”, where 30 is the degree of the risk (Schwalbe).

This risk rule really works in sport and science, since all the experiments are a kind of risk; scientists take risks and get their results. To my mind, Schwalbe is right pointing out that the most of people regret on what they haven’t done rather on that they did. So in terms of getting rid of one’s regret a person needs to follow own instincts.

Nevertheless, it is necessary to admit that sometimes taking risk may cause very negative results; therefore it is necessary to be reasonable. I am impressed with the example provided by Ropeik about the woman who was afraid to fly because of terrorist (Dreifus). This woman decided to drive several states, and she died in a car crash.

In this case the woman should have think about the degree and possibility of risk in cars and planes. Regarding the fact that planes are the safest means of travelling, and the fact that possibility of terroristic act repeating wasn’t big, this woman should have gone by plane. This proves that there are some cases where thoughtful reasoning is needed.

Here I should stress that thoughtfulness is necessary in medicine where people’s lives are concerned. Doctors should carefully consider all the consequences and then make decisions. Doctors are not the only people who should be concerned about health; people should mind their health themselves. Every risk here should be thought over thousands of times to make no harm to oneself or somebody else.

At this point I would like to return to my statement that each person has his/her notion of risk. Someone may think that it is very risky to ride a bicycle, someone may be afraid to take a risk and visit another country or even unfamiliar place. I am sure that a person who goes in for extreme sports, may be very conservative in food and will never “take a risk” to taste some exotic dainty (here I don’t some religious or health restrictions, of course).

To my mind these humble risks can be taken, and there is something that can inspire people to take such kind a risk, this is an example of other person. For instance, in case with food, a person can see that other people taste that, so he/she can also try it; this person tries and, of course, starts trying to find those stupid reasons preventing from such pleasant experience. After this, I am sure, the person will continue taking such kind of risks.

As for me, I can’t say that I risk all the time. I can’t even provide any example of my big risk; I suppose my risks are still in future. I know that I am not afraid to take risk; at least I haven’t met some difficult situation when I was to risk.

Here I’d like to mention my friend, who is afraid of speaking. I can’t say she doesn’t talk at all, but she is not a public speaker, and she will never speak on something she is not sure about, and if she is asked something she doesn’t know thoroughly she just keeps mum. My friend is afraid of making mistake.

To my mind this is not right, for everyone knows if we don’t make mistakes will never learn. In this connection I would like to cite Carrol admitting that “failure is a good thing” (Carroll). Though, I wouldn’t agree that “success is boring” (Carroll). I’d rather admit that people should try to improve even successful things. A good example of this is Carrol’s daughter who seeks for the further development (Carroll).

To my mind, taking risks is essential for the whole humanity. It is impossible to imagine where we could be now if our ancestors didn’t risk to tame fire. All these great and little risks lead people to new discoveries, new opportunities. I think people should take risks and start something new; they can’t just sit and talk about achievement of others, they should take a chance and risk, leaving one’s fear behind, without being afraid of failure, because failure will only show the right way to go and succeed.

Short Version

Our life is full of risks. I also face many risks in my daily life. I mostly take risks not by choice, but it comes as an accident. I would like to talk about a situation when I had to face the severity of a risk.

It was when I was in 10th class. My mother remained ill for long time and my own health was not good.  Just before the exams, health of my mother worsened more and I was the only person to take care of her. I skipped the classes. I didn’t find any enough time to go through my books. My final exams were very near. I was very much worried about what I would do in the exam.

I consulted my teacher. Since I couldn’t cover my whole syllabus, my teacher advised me not to leave the hope. And he told me to first go through the important chapters. But I was still worried because it was a big risk to take. If the questions would not come from that part of the syllabus, then I would be almost black in the exam and would fail. Failing in exam would mean loss of one year.

It was a tough time for me. I followed my teacher’s advice and decided to take a risk by covering at least important chapters from the syllabus. I covered almost half syllabus of every subject and then I left it on the God.

Then after 15 days, it was the time of exam and I started appearing in the exams. I was very much lucky. It was as if God had helped me at that time. Fortunately, 90% of the exam questions were from the syllabus that I had covered and I performed well. And I could score very much satisfactory marks.

So the risk that I had taken paid me off well. I think it is much better to take risk Rather than giving up at once. But there is no doubt in saying that no risk means no returns. We would have to take risk if we want to gain something important.

So this was a time when I took risk and I faced positive outcome.

There is lot of misinformation also, that causes risk in planning and decision making.

Some people like to take risk to make money while others like to take risks just for fun, adventure and also to check their own capacities.

I also face risks in my daily life. For example, when I travel on the road, it is a single Lane Road from my Village to City, so that involves risk. Similarly when we take medicines or any treatment then there is risk of side effects. I mostly take risks not by choice, but it comes as an accident. I would like to talk about a situation when I had to face the severity of a risk.

Then my parents looking at my depression advised me to drop for a year and then restart the study next year, but I didn’t want to drop my studies for a year.

It was a tough time for me. Every day my heart would sink thinking about it. I remained in anxiety for many days. But I followed my teacher’s advice and decided to take a risk by covering at least important chapters from the syllabus. I covered almost half syllabus of every subject and then I left it on the God. By doing so, I knew I took a great risk but I could find no other option. So if the exam would come from that part of the syllabus which I had covered then surely I would perform well in exam, otherwise if not, then I would fail the exam because in those remaining chapters, I rarely had any knowledge. Then after 15 days, it was the time of exam and I started appearing in the exams. I was very much lucky. It was as if God had helped me at that time. ਇਹ ਉਦੋਂ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਦਸਵੀਂ ਜਮਾਤ ਵਿਚ ਸੀ. ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਮੰਦਭਾਗਾ ਸਾਲ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰਾ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੱਕ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਰਹੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਠੀਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ।  ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਠੀਕ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਗੜ ਗਈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੇਖਭਾਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਇੱਕੋ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਸੀ। ਮੈਂ ਕਲਾਸਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ. ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਨ ਲਈ ਲੋੜੀਂਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਲਾਜ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਚੱਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ। ਮੇਰੀ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਬਹੁਤ ਨੇੜੇ ਸੀ. ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਕਰਾਂਗਾ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਨਾਲ ਸਲਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ. ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਿਲੇਬਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਵਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਿਆ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਸ ਨਾ ਛੱਡ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਅਧਿਆਇਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਗੁਜ਼ਰੋ. ਕਈ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਤੱਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਚਲੀ ਗਈ। ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਅਧਿਆਇਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਵਰ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਲੈਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਖਤਰਾ ਸੀ। ਜੇ ਸਿਲੇਬਸ ਦੇ ਉਸ ਹਿੱਸੇ ਤੋਂ ਸਵਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਮਤਿਹਾਨ ਵਿਚ ਲਗਭਗ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਫੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ. ਪ੍ਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਫੇਲ੍ਹ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਦਾ ਨੁਕਸਾਨ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਫੇਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਉਦਾਸੀਨਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦਿਆਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਲਈ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਣ ਅਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਅਗਲੇ ਸਾਲ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰਨ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਸਾਲ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਣੀ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਜੋਖ਼ਿਮ ਮੈਂ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਸੀ, ਉਸ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਫ਼ਾਇਦਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਇਆ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇੱਕਵਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਰ ਮੰਨਣ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਏ ਜੋਖਿਮ ਲੈਣਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਹੈ।

ਇਸ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਉਹ ਸਮਾਂ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਜੋਖ਼ਮ ਉਠਾਇਆ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ।

ਮੈਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਲੋਕ ਅਕਸਰ ਪੈਸੇ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਜੋਖਿਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਉਹ ਸ਼ੇਅਰ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਡਾ ਜੋਖਿਮ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਮੇਰੇ ਕੁਝ ਦੋਸਤ ਸ਼ਿਮਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਦੀ-ਰਾਫ਼ਟਿੰਗ ਕਰਨ ਗਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਰਗਾ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਇਹ ਕਹਿਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੋਈ ਸ਼ੱਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਜੋਖਿਮ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਰਿਟਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ। ਜੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਹਾਸਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਜੋਖਿਮ ਉਠਾਉਣਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ।

Our lives are full of risks sometimes, Some risks we take after knowing that its a risk, but some risks come suddenly and we take actions without knowing. Actually, the end result can be positive as well as negative. Now I’m going to talk about a risk I took about a year back.

Last new year holiday I planned to go on a trip with 3 of my office friends to an area far away from our hometown. That area is full of rain forests, wildlife, and historic places and luckily we got a good hotel offer for the season. So we planned everything for about 2 weeks before the trip to make sure nothing will be missed. My three friends are also girls so we called this trip as an ” angels trip”, all our office staff also were well aware of this as we were planning it all the time.

Everything went as we planned on the 1st day and we visited some of the historic places and had a hike as well. We went in my car and I was the driver for the entire trip. Our 1st-day visits were over around 6.00 pm and suddenly there was a huge rain and we had to wait in a cafe for one and a half hours. Around 7.40 pm we started to go to the hotel which we booked and the google map helped us to find the shortest way to go there in an hour. We were so tired by that time and in 15 mints we came to that road which showed on Google map. The road was fine at the beginning with houses beside and people were on the road. But when we drive more and more we felt that we are somewhere where there are more trees and no houses or people. The road was narrower than in the beginning, but luckily a man was cycling on to the other side. So we stopped and asked about the road from him and he said there won’t be a problem to go. We felt quite fine and continued, and according to the map, we will be at the hotel in just 20 mints.

We got a bit scared as it was too dark and at the same time. There were no lights on the road and only trees and bushes. we found something blocking the narrow road in front of us and that was a wild elephant. We were shocked and I stopped the car and switched off the lights. We kept quiet for more than 30 mints till the elephant moved. That was so shocking as the elephant was not a small one and if it troubled us, there was no one to help even. Luckily he moved at the end and we had no option but to continue slowly expecting any attacks. I drove the car by my gut feeling as we all were shaking with fear at that time.

Once we arrived at the hotel we told the manager about what happened and he said we had come through one of the biggest forests which had a lot of elephants and even bears. We thanked God. As we were safe, but until now we never told this to our parents.

To be honest, risk plays a significant role in every person’s life because it not only increase the confidence level but motivates a person to do something new and challenging. I also experienced a situation when I helped a child by taking full risk.

It happened about two years ago. I went to Agra with my family to visit Taj Mahal; I travelled by train. The weather was very relaxed, and we all enjoyed very much by playing some games and eating some snacks which were prepared by my mother for the journey.

Suddenly I heard some noise, and I asked people what happened then one person told me that one child’s arm was stuck in the train gate. I said it to my family and also said to them that no one ready to help that child. But my cousin was willing to help him. I went with my cousin toward to the train door.

I told that to pull the chain to stop the train by an unfortunate chain was not working. So it was so risky to help someone in the running train. But we did not give up and try our best. My cousin holds me very tight when I was helping the child. Firstly, I gave some water to the child and then decided to move his arm very carefully because if I did hurry a child might be injured.

It took a half-hour to release the child arm from the train door. But I did it, and as a result, my cousin and I successfully released child without any injury.

 We all take risks in our life. • Sometimes we realise we are taking a risk, and sometimes we don’t even realise that we are taking a risk. • For instance, crossing a busy road is also taking a risk and boarding a train which has started is also taking a risk. • In these situations we don’t even realise that we are taking risks. • Here, I would like to talk about a situation when I took a risk and it had a positive result. • I have a pet dog, Nora, whom I take for a walk in the evening every day. • It’s a toy breed, shih tzu. • Our neighbours have a German shepherd, Bruno, which is very aggressive. • Everyone in our street is afraid of that dog. • Even I am very afraid of that dog. • They tell all of us not to be afraid of their dog as it is well trained and would not harm any known person. • But Bruno’s growl is worse than the Corona pandemic. • Normally they keep their dog leashed all the time. • One day, as I was walking in the street with Nora, Bruno escaped and came running towards us. • Nora ran the other side and her leash slipped from my hand. • I knew I had to act quickly and save Nora. • I came between that dog and Nora. • In that one second, I could imagine myself being bitten at several places and blood oozing out from all of them. • It was a big risk, but at that moment the safety of my dear Nora was the most important thing for me. • When I came between Bruno and Nora, I took Bruno’s name in a stern voice and told him to sit. • Surprisingly, he sat still and started wagging its tail. • I heaved a sigh of relief. • In the meantime, my brother had come out and Nora was safe in his arms. • I felt so happy that I was able to save Nora. • So, this was the risk I took which had a positive result.

Taking risks is important to attain success in life. Many people become successful, after putting up with a risk. Taking more stakes improves our chances of achieving future goals. I have taken many risks and here I would go to talk about a risk that I took and had a positive result.  Actually, last year my school examinations were going on. On the next day, there was my mathematics examination and I was very nervous. I did a lot of practice and the night before I didn’t sleep because I was preparing for my exam.  My exam was at 9. Am and somehow I got late and there were only 15 minutes left to enter the examination hall. I was in a very hurry. I took my bike and forgot to put the helmet. When I realized, I was far from my house, and I didn’t have time to come back. I took the safety risk to ride my bike without a helmet.  Fortunately, On the day, there were no police checking on my way. I drove my bike at terrific speed and reached the school at the time. I performed very well in my exam and thanked God, for the positive result of the risk that I had taken.

 I took the risk three years back when I was at home because of a lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. I lost my job then because my employer did not allow me to work under the work-from-home option. I was free and did not have money to make ends meet, so I decided to run the business to earn a livelihood.

 So I had no option but to do something, so I launched a digital marketing company. For that, I took online training and paid 50,000. It was a considerable risk for me because I took that money as a loan from one of my relatives, and losing it would have jeopardized my future.

 So I took that risk, and to my joy, it worked like a charm because, after the training, I got my first order within one week of launching my company. I did my work with determination, dedication, and discipline, and due to that, I earned goodwill, which helped me expand my business exponentially.

 That decision to put money into learning a new skill worked in my favour and has helped me a lot. These days, I am a seasoned digital marketer, and the credit goes to the risk I took during the lockdown period.

I have taken many risks in my life, which I remember clearly, but one risk that is very hard-breaking and hard to believe in is cliff climbing. When I went to Kashmir for a solo trip, I climbed a massive cliff of 3000 meters high. It was a cliff named K2 Krumanjan. The cliff was very high and had a steep slope. It was a young mountain’s cliff and was entirely covered with snow.

Many stories were there of people who had slipped from the clip and ended their lives. The clip was very steep and slippery, but I thought I would be able to climb it. I used a good pair of Skink shoes, a good rope, and a hammer to climb it.

It took me five hours to climb that cliff, which was challenging because it was freezing there. I was covered entirely with five layers of clothes, which greatly increased my body weight, and it was tough to climb a cliff at that time. This was a considerable risk, and I knew it could also end my life.

But I still took it, as I knew that the view from the mountain would be like heaven. So it happened: When I reached the top of the hill and looked around, I saw the whole of Kashmir covered in snow. Its trees, oversized lifts, and enormous cliffs looked small from that mountain.

I clearly remember seeing a lush, white-coloured beauty around me, which felt like heaven. The hard work I did for five hours was worth it, and I think it was tough to believe that I climbed that cliff alone. When I told my parents, I got scolded at first, but when I showed them pictures of the view I got from it, they were shocked to see it as it looked as much like heaven and was very beautiful from and was very beautiful to look at.

I stayed there for two hours. I had some hot water with me, and I drank it when I reached the top of the cliff. And I saw that beauty for just two hours, but still, my heart was not filled watching it. I wanted to watch it more, but as the evening was falling, I had to go down. Otherwise, at night, it would be very much more dangerous to come down, as it could give me more risk than coming up.

So, I ended my trip after spending the most beautiful two hours of my life watching the surroundings from that cliff.

I have taken many risks in my life, but one risk I clearly remember was during my 10th-grade examination. It was time for the board examination, and I needed to prepare for my physics exam.

I clearly remember having three chapters of mine left to revise and one to do entirely, and I was terrified. It was late at night as I was on holiday after the biology exam. The consecutive day was the physics exam.

I panicked and scared, but my mom suggested a lovely idea. She told me that I could wake up the whole night and study, and then go in the morning and take my examination. It would be hazardous.

I could also fall asleep during my examination, but I had some confidence in myself, so I did the show. I started studying, and I learned all night until 6 a.m. It was so that I completed all of my syllabus and revised it once.

I knew I was well prepared, but I didn’t realize that I was feeling sleepy. When I got outside my room and saw that it was already morning, and the sun was rising, my mother gave me a cup of coffee, which immensely helped me stay awake. Then I went for my examination, terrified that I would not fall asleep or forget anything, but it didn’t happen as I gave the examination very calmly and reasonably.

I knew the exam went well, and I slept for 7 hours when I returned home. After that, there was a 4-day holiday for the subsequent examination. At that examination time, I scored the highest marks in physics subject only as there were 99 out of 100 marks in my physics subject rather than any other subject. I was very proud of my decision; it helped me gain good marks without losing my confidence. I would not. I could not have left the work half-complete. It would not be perfect for me, and I would have failed the examination as it depends on the chapters only, which we do.

We don’t know how the examiner will grade the question paper. I think it was a very good decision for me, but I won’t suggest making that decision again as it is a risk only to not sleep all night and study.

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card: “ Describe a risk you took that you thought would lead to a terrible result but ended up with a positive result ”.

1. How should parents teach their children what a risk is?  

Parents can teach children what risk is through mock drills. For example, they should make the children participate in mock drills throughout various cities. They can also show them content on social media and other platforms where people take risks and pay the price. Moreover, parents should let children participate in various awareness programs where civil society makes the general public aware of the disastrous repercussions of taking risks. 

2. What risks should parents tell their children to avoid?

 Those risks can jeopardize children’s health and lives, so parents should tell them to avoid them. Taking risks in sports or study is different, and children must be encouraged to do that because they gain confidence. However, harming yourself physically and mentally could lead the children down the wrong trajectory, so parents should tell them to avoid those risks. 

3. Why do some people like to watch risk-taking movies? 

There is no denying that risk-taking movies provide thrills and excitement. Many people refrain from taking risks, and by watching these movies, they get flashes of inspiration to take risks in their lives. That’s why they prefer to watch such movies.

 4. What kinds of sports are dangerous but exciting? 

Various sports are dangerous but exciting. One is bungee jumping, where you fall from a thrilling but dangerous height. Many water sports are also harmful, like river rafting, which seems exciting because of various twists and turns. However, it is risky because a wrong fall can lead to physical damage.

 5. Why do some people enjoy extreme sports? 

Some people have this uncanny knack for participating in extreme sports because they get a lot of thrill and excitement. Moreover, in this modern era, the lives of the masses have become highly monotonous. So, through extreme sports, they get fun and spark back into their lives. 

6. Are action films popular in your country? 

Yes, action films are viral in my country because people watch them and feel excited, and some youngsters even try to copy famous superstars who do action.

7. Do you think it is good if a leader likes to take risks?  

Taking risks is vital for a leader to lead his team towards an impressive growth trajectory. However, that risk should not be at the expense of people’s physical and mental well-being. So, any risk that could improve people’s lives should be taken, and leaders must refrain from taking those risks that could tarnish people’s physical and mental health. 

8. Do you think men and women will make different choices about risk-taking?

  A few decades back, men’s risk-taking appetite was higher than women’s. However, times have changed. Now, women rub shoulders with men in every field. So, if there is a choice about risk-taking, it is more or less the same. However, women are more emotional; sometimes, they think more about their families before taking risks. 

9. What about the young and old?  

There is no denying the fact that as we grow old, our risk-taking appetite declines. When we are youngsters, we have a lot of adrenaline rush, which empowers us to take risks. So, the risk-taking tendency of a youngster is high compared to an old person’s.

When you're a teen, you feel invulnerable; you feel that nothing in the world can stop you, and that your life in front of you will be so incredibly easy. You never think that something will happen to you, or that you might have to put your plans on hold; you might as well be immortal. On August 9, 2012, however, that feeling of invulnerability was taken away from me, when I found out that my back pain was, in actuality, a large mass, 6 centimeters in size, on my ovary which needed to be removed. Surgery, up to that point, was likely my biggest lifelong fear, to the extent where I did not believe I could get my wisdom teeth out without suffering a panic attack. However, when faced with this mass that needed to be removed, and seeing the fear in my parents' eyes, I knew I had to face that fear in order to save myself. I went into what was supposed to be a 45-minute session of laparoscopic surgery. The surgery ended up taking seven whole hours, in which the spreading mass was removed, along with one of my ovaries and a section of my colon. This also left me with an ileostomy, which I had reversed a few months later. When I woke up from that first surgery and heard the outcome, I was surprised at how calm I was. While I did complain and get frustrated quite a bit, I soon learned to take my situation in stride, gaining a positive perspective. Everyone from my friends to my surgeons (and even I) was surprised at how much strength I managed to find in myself. Even when I discovered that I had ovarian cancer, I attempted to assuage everyone's fears and make them feel comfortable with my illness. At this point, I have started treatments and chemotherapy; I have only increased in strength and positivity. Even though I ended up losing all of my hair, I wear my wig with confidence, and I manage to make do even with the limited energy I have after treatments. This has affected my schoolwork as well; I was forced to drop out of the IB Diploma. Despite these obstacles, I learn as much as I can when I am not in treatment. In order to be honest and transparent about my situation, I let everyone in my school know about my condition. When they comment on how strong I am, I don't quite believe them - this strength does not come from me specifically, but is something I believe everyone discovers within themselves when they are put in this situation. Through these kinds of difficulties, I firmly believe that everyone finds the strength they need to endure. It helps immensely to have strong family and friendships to help you along the way. These things have helped me weather the storm of illness with grace and dignity.

Model Answer:

The rate of my success, resulting in taking risks, isn’t very promising except on a few occasions. Today, I would like to talk about one of those few occasions when I succeeded after taking a calculated risk.

Yes, it was more of a calculated risk because even though it exposed me to some kind of financial risk, it was counterbalanced by the assurance of a minimum benefit even if I didn’t succeed. Anyway, the risk, I am talking about, was taken by me about a year ago when I purchased a rather old model motorbike and fixed it.

The risk in buying that motorbike was that it needed some major repair work because of its old age, and very few mechanics in my town had some ideas about how to fix that type of motorbike at a reasonable cost. In other words, if those mechanics were not able to fix that motorbike at a reasonable price, the cost of fixing it would suddenly increase rather substantially. But the possible benefit of taking that risk in buying that old motorbike was that if I could fix it reasonably well and at a reasonable cost, I could easily sell it at a price as much as 10 times higher than what I really needed to spend in buying and fixing it.

However, so far, I have only talked about the possible financial benefits that primarily inspired me to take the risk. Another reason that motivated me to take that risk was that even if I wasn’t able to sell that motorbike at a profit, I could always offer it to my younger brother for his commuting from and to his university as he desperately needed his own transportation to save some valuable times on the roads, commuting on slow-moving vehicles.

But, in the end, I did succeed in fixing that motorbike and then selling it at a reasonable profit which really felt good. Besides, it was for the first time that I realized that taking risks doesn’t only bring us personal and financial success, but also teaches us how to solve tough problems in unfavourable conditions.

Well, there were also many incidents and ups and downs in my life where I had to choose the risky one. I will be talking about one incident which affected my life and turned it over.

Why Did You Take It?

I was in standard 12th and people say this was the time when students need to choose their career so that it becomes their profession later on. Well, it was a difficult time then. I was a science student but not really interested in the subject as I am interested in Literature. I had written my competitive exams, and the results were quite decent so that I can choose CSE in a government college.

What was The Result?

That is when I had to decide what to choose. Choosing CSE was a wise option because it had a secure profession. My mother had always supported me to choose my interests, but I also wanted to choose something to make her happy. Doing engineering was something that she liked. I had to choose something fast because the offer for CSE was to expire soon. Then, I did what I thought would risk my life. I opted for the long term to help me choose.

How Do You Feel About It?

I was very thankful to myself for choosing the risk because I had thought it through and now I am doing what I am interested in. My mother was the greatest motivation in my risk and she gave me the power to continue what makes me happy. I think taking risks can land you in three things, the same situation, a positive situation or a negative situation. But, as long as one is happy and satisfied with what they choose, they will achieve what they want.

Ielts speaking: what was it.

Taking risks can either lead you or bury you. People say a wise person never takes risks, but I want to say that a wise person always takes risks to become successful. Well, all the successful people today have taken risks in life that’s why they are standing there. According to the surveys people even say that only 10 percent of the population can take risks and achieve their dreams and these are the people who change society for the better.

I want to express one situation where I had to take a risk. Well, it was a mental situation but, needed to act fast. It was when I went to a zoo on a school trip.

I was usually with my friend’s group and we were walking around, talking, laughing and watching animals. Suddenly we heard cries and shouts from the side of the lion’s cage. The cage was big enough and it had a canal around the forest that the lion was living in.

When we reached there, half jogging and half running, we saw a ten-year-old kid, who had gone in through the barriers and had fallen into the canal which was not too deep. The kid was unconscious and his parents were crying, the father was holding his wife who was trying to jump in. Meanwhile, people were thinking and calling the zoo staff, who informed them that they will be there in 5 minutes. But, there was no time for that, the lion had stopped the child and was now crossing the forest.

Well, this was a situation where it was risky and I had to act fast. I got an idea, because people had brought a rope, but were not able to reach him. I ran to them and told them that they had to tie the rope around my waist and I would go down and when I held the child they would pull me up. Thankfully, the teachers were not around me and in 10 seconds I was tied to the rope and went down. The lion had sped up, watching me, it was going to jump in the water when they pulled us up.

The risk might have made me lose my life, but I couldn’t stand there watching a life gone. Their parents were more than thankful and people around cheered on me and told me that my parents were lucky to have a child-like me. I felt happy and glad that I helped him and now he is safe. Risks are meant to be taken.

It is dependent on the goal. Some people participate in extreme activities for the money, as sports are quite expensive. Sports also feel natural or in a difficult way for some people, and they do that as a passion for others. As a result, there might be a variety of causes.

Of course, particularly Indian films. They are very popular among my country’s youth, and events have occurred as a result of others attempting to mimic them.

Sample Answer

Every major decision we take in our lives has repercussions either way. People hardly come across choices that do not involve a certain degree of peril. However, alternatives that entail a greater magnitude of risk also accord higher returns. One such instance where I decided to go with the riskier alternative and was rewarded handsomely was when I let go of a seemingly lucrative job offer.

When I was looking for full-time employment after I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree, the amount of experience I had was almost negligible. Although the recruitment cell of my college brought several companies who wanted to hire freshers, I did not find a job role that suited me well. Finally, after almost two months of searching, I came across an organization that was actively recruiting freshers for the role of Business Development Executive. It was a well-paid position, considering the amount of experience required to be eligible for it. I applied for this position and was selected. However, at the very last moment, I decided to let go of the offer since I wanted to work as a Content Writer.

The decision seemed risky at the moment but eventually turned out to be the right course of action. Soon, I was selected as a Content Writing intern at a reputable organization which ultimately led to a full-time position at the company.

The whole experience turned out to be a vital lesson for me, and I learned that even in the face of hardships, we should not overlook our goals.

• Repercussions

Meaning: an unintended consequence of an event or action, especially an unwelcome one. Eg.: The declaration of war by Russia on Ukraine will have serious repercussions.

Meaning: involve (something) as a necessary or inevitable part or consequence. Eg.: This route might entail unknown risks and hurdles.

Meaning: to a large or generous degree; substantially. Eg.: They were compensated handsomely for their work on the project.

Meaning: so small or unimportant as to be not worth considering; insignificant. Eg.: Although the plan seemed to be profitable, the result was negligible.

Meaning: having a good reputation. Eg.: Professor Ray was a reputable man in his community.

One of the most crucial duties of a leader is to make decisions for their entire team. Often, leaders are faced with a tough decision between two or more alternatives that involve the risk of failure or undesired consequences. However, they must also have enough conviction and confidence in themselves and their team to make unpredictable choices that offer profitable results. Thus, I believe that it is prudent for a leader to take risks when necessary.

Do you think men and women will make different choices of risk-taking?

It is not a hard and fast rule that men and women will always make different choices when a certain degree of risk is involved. In many instances, a man and a woman might incline toward the same alternative. I believe that the nature of a person has a more significant impact on the proclivity of a person to take risks than their gender. That being said, women tend to be more reasonable when dealing with uncertainty than men in many cases.

Meaning: denoting products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population. Eg.: The aim of the company was to penetrate this unexplored market niche.

Meaning: excessive admiration or praise. Eg.: The adulation of BTS fans was quite visible during the concert.

• Paradoxical

A Nissan SUV burst into flames and burned out of control in a Maryland driveway before firefighters arrived, startling a family awake and sending them running from their home.

Vicki and Philip Hill of Bethesda told USA TODAY on Friday that their 2015 Nissan Murano caught fire around 5:30 a.m. on May 14 as they and their three children slept.

Doorbell footage shows the Murano smoking under the hood before catching fire and causing the vehicle's airbags to explode, waking up the Hills and their three kids, 5-year-old twins and a 7-year-old.

"I thought someone was trying to break into the house with a sledgehammer," Vicki told USA TODAY. "Luckily for us, our next door neighbor's dog woke her up early, I think, because he must have smelled smoke. She went to take him outside, saw that our car was on fire and called 911 about four minutes before I did."

While scary, fire could have been much worse

The family considers themselves lucky that the SUV was parked outside facing the street, rather than the garage, which is next to a gas line. If the car had been in the garage, they're sure the home would have exploded.

The family was in the process of finishing the garage so they could park their vehicles in it but things have been delayed, so that's why they parked the SUV in the driveway, Vicki said.

Now, she said they will likely never park cars in the garage again.

Family forced to pay for their own rental after vehicle fire 

Vicki has a Mercedes Benz that was parked near the Nissan Murano. It's undrivable at the moment, she said.

"The entire right side of that is damaged," she said. "All the wheels are damaged and the fire was so hot ... parts of the driveway are damaged and the garage door."

The family is using a rental car and had wanted Nissan to get them one but the company initially declined, the Hills said. The company eventually offered them a loaner on Friday afternoon but it wouldn't be ready until Monday or Tuesday, Vicki said.

Nissan has opened an investigation into the incident, the company told USA TODAY in a statement Friday.

"A technician has visited the Hills’ home and conducted an initial inspection before having the vehicle moved," Nissan said. "We believe it was subject to a recall but cannot make any further comment on this specific incident until the investigation is completed.”

The Hills said they were originally told it'd take Nissan between six and eight weeks to assess the wreckage in the driveway.

After the family spoke to local TV station FOX 5 DC , Nissan told them there would be an investigator in the area that could come and assess the situation. The investigator took a look at the vehicle Wednesday and got it taken away and stored elsewhere, the Hills told USA TODAY.   

Vehicle has a history of recalls

Since 2015, there have been numerous recalls for the Murano. 

Three of the recalls involve fires, including the most recent one filed on Nov. 8, 2019. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration , a fluid leak on the anti-lock braking systems (ABS) pump can result in an electrical short, increasing the risk of a fire in the SUVs.

Philip said back in 2016, there was a recall for a pump on the Nissan Murano. He took it to a service center to have it worked on.

When the fire department came out for the most recent incident, they mentioned the recalls but the Hills aren't sure what caused the fire.

"It could've been the recall or it could've been another issue with the vehicle," she said. "We're not going to know until Nissan concludes their investigation."

The family bought the car new and it only had 62,000 miles on it, the Hills said. Because of the damage to both their cars, they fear they will soon be responsible for two car payments.

Children are traumatized by vehicle fire

No one was hurt physically due to the fire but the Hills said their children aren't sleeping and were really scared.

"They're terrified every time they hear sirens. They cry," Vicki told USA TODAY. "We finally got this rental vehicle. They're afraid to get in it. They're worried at night that the other car is going to catch on fire now."

Vicki said she will never let her kids park in the garage when they're old enough to drive, citing the fire's psychological impact, which she said is being prolonged by the still-visible damage.

"We want to get our house and driveway fixed so the kids aren't looking at it all the time and reminded," she said. "You can still smell it out there even though the car's gone."

As of Friday afternoon, the family is waiting to hear from Nissan. After an investigator came out on Wednesday, the company said they'd be in touch within two weeks.

"We are waiting to see what happens with the investigation," Philip said. "What would be great to hear is 'We'd like to help you out with a loaner vehicle.'"

"The fact that it happened at all is very alarming but the bigger thing is the way that the company has handled it," Vicki said. "If they acted like they cared at all could have made a difference to us, I think."

They said they wanted to share their story so other families know how this could impact them.

"These things don't happen," Philip said. "They're not common. People need to be aware."

Learn more about mouth cancer, also called oral cancer, from oncologist Katharine Price, M.D.

Hello, I'm Dr. Katharine Price, an oncologist at Mayo Clinic. In this video, we'll cover the basics of oral cancer: What is it? Who gets it? The symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Whether you're looking for answers for yourself or someone you love, we're here to give you the best information available. Oral cancer, also called mouth cancer, forms in the oral cavity, which includes all parts of your mouth that you can see if you open wide and look in the mirror. Your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, roof or floor of the mouth. Oral cancer forms when cells on the lips or in the mouth mutate. Most often they begin in the flat, thin cells that line your lips and the inside of your mouth. These are called squamous cells. Small changes to the DNA of the squamous cells make the cells grow abnormally. These mutated cells accumulate, forming a tumor that grows in the mouth and often spread to lymph nodes in the neck. Oral cancer is curable if detected at an early stage. And like other cancers, a large amount of effort has been dedicated to determining causes and improving treatments.

The average age of those diagnosed with oral cancer is 63. Just over 20% of cases occur in patients younger than 55. However, it can affect anyone. There are several known risk factors that could increase your risk of developing oral cancer. If you use any kind of tobacco, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and others, you're at a greater risk. Heavy alcohol use also increases the risk. Those with HPV, human papillomavirus, have a higher chance of developing oral cancer as well. Other risk factors include a diet that lacks fruit and vegetables, chronic irritation or inflammation in the mouth, and a weakened immune system.

Oral cancer can present itself in many different ways, which could include: a lip or mouth sore that doesn't heal, a white or reddish patch on the inside of your mouth, loose teeth, a growth or lump inside your mouth, mouth pain, ear pain, and difficulty or pain while swallowing, opening your mouth or chewing. If you're experiencing any of these issues and they persist for more than two weeks, see a doctor. They'll be able to rule out more common causes first, like an infection.

To determine if you have oral cancer, your doctor or dentist will usually perform a physical exam to inspect any areas of irritation such as sores or white patches. If they suspect something is abnormal, they may conduct a biopsy where they take a small sample of the area for testing. If oral cancer is diagnosed, your medical team will then determine how far along the cancer is, or the stage of the cancer. The stage of the cancer ranges from 0 to 4 and helps your doctor counsel you on the likelihood of successful treatment. In order to determine the stage, they may perform an endoscopy, where doctors use a small camera to inspect your throat, or they may order imaging tests, like CT scans, PET scans, and MRIs, to gather more information.

What your treatment plan looks like will depend on your cancer's location and stage, as well as your health and personal preferences. You may have just one type of treatment or you may need a combination of cancer treatments. Surgery is the main treatment for oral cancer. Surgery generally means removing the tumor and possibly lymph nodes in the neck. If the tumor is large, reconstruction may be required. If the tumor is small and there's no evidence of spread to lymph nodes, surgery alone may be enough treatment. If the oral cancer has spread to lymph nodes in the neck or is large and invading different areas of the mouth, more treatment is required after surgery. This could include radiation, which uses high-power beams of energy to target and destroy the mutated cancerous cells. Sometimes chemotherapy is combined with the radiation. Chemotherapy is a powerful cocktail of chemicals that kills the cancer. Immunotherapy, a newer treatment which helps your immune system attack the cancer, is also sometimes used.

Learning you have oral cancer can be difficult. It can leave you feeling helpless. But remember, information is power when it comes to your health. This disease is survivable - now more than ever. Cancer that occurs on the inside of the mouth is sometimes called oral cancer or oral cavity cancer.

Mouth cancer is one of several types of cancers grouped in a category called head and neck cancers. Mouth cancer and other head and neck cancers are often treated similarly.

Mouth cancers form when cells on the lips or in the mouth develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell's DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do. The mutations changes tell the cells to continue growing and dividing when healthy cells would die. The accumulating abnormal mouth cancer cells can form a tumor. With time they may spread inside the mouth and on to other areas of the head and neck or other parts of the body.

Mouth cancers most commonly begin in the flat, thin cells (squamous cells) that line your lips and the inside of your mouth. Most oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.

It's not clear what causes the mutations in squamous cells that lead to mouth cancer. But doctors have identified factors that may increase the risk of mouth cancer.

Risk factors

Factors that can increase your risk of mouth cancer include:

• Tobacco use of any kind, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and snuff, among others
• Heavy alcohol use
• Excessive sun exposure to your lips
• A sexually transmitted virus called human papillomavirus (HPV)
• A weakened immune system

There's no proven way to prevent mouth cancer. However, you can reduce your risk of mouth cancer if you:

• Stop using tobacco or don't start. If you use tobacco, stop. If you don't use tobacco, don't start. Using tobacco, whether smoked or chewed, exposes the cells in your mouth to dangerous cancer-causing chemicals.
• Drink alcohol only in moderation, if at all. Chronic excessive alcohol use can irritate the cells in your mouth, making them vulnerable to mouth cancer. If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women of all ages and men older than age 65, and up to two drinks a day for men age 65 and younger.
• Avoid excessive sun exposure to your lips. Protect the skin on your lips from the sun by staying in the shade when possible. Wear a broad-brimmed hat that effectively shades your entire face, including your mouth. Apply a sunscreen lip product as part of your routine sun protection regimen.
• See your dentist regularly. As part of a routine dental exam, ask your dentist to inspect your entire mouth for abnormal areas that may indicate mouth cancer or precancerous changes.
