A Queens teacher on Charlottesville: ‘It can’t just be teachers of color’ offering lessons on race

After racial violence erupted in Virginia last year, New York City teacher Vivett Dukes called on teachers to engage students in honest conversations about racism.

“We do our children and ourselves a disservice when we don’t have these difficult conversations as a part of our collective curriculums. However, many teachers from various walks of life are neither well-versed nor fully comfortable discussing race on any level with their students. Not talking about racism won’t make it go away.”

Why the phrase ‘with fidelity’ is an affront to good teaching

Too often teachers are blamed for bad curriculum, writes Tom Rademacher, Minnesota’s Teacher of the Year in 2014. And that needs to stop.

“It keeps happening because admitting that schools are messy and students are human, and teaching is both creative and artistic, would also mean you have to trust teachers and let them have some power.”

I’m a Bronx teacher, and I see up close what we all lose when undocumented students live with uncertainty

Two of Ilona Nanay’s best students started high school as English learners and were diagnosed with learning disabilities. But their educational careers came to an end after graduation because both were undocumented and couldn’t afford out-of-state tuition.

“By not passing the DREAM Act, it feels like lawmakers have decided that some of the young people that graduate from my school do not deserve the opportunity to achieve their dreams.”

I’m a Florida teacher in the era of school shootings. This is the terrifying reality of my classroom during a lockdown drill.

K.T. Katzmann is a teacher in Broward County, Florida. In this essay she shares what it’s like knowing that you could be the only thing between a mass shooter and a group of students.

“The experience of being isolated, uninformed, and responsible for the lives of dozens of children is now universal to our profession, whether because of actual emergencies or planned drills.”

I’m a Houston geography teacher. This is my plan for our first day back — as soon as it arrives.

Alex McNaughton teaches a human geography course in Houston. After Hurricane Harvey, he decided to move up a lesson about how urbanization can exacerbate flooding.

“Teachers have a unique power — the power to shape the minds of future generations to solve the problems that we face. Houston’s location means that it will always be susceptible to flooding. But by teaching about the flood I hope I can play a small role in helping our city avoid repeating some of the tragic scenes I witnessed this week.”

How one Harlem teacher gave his student — the ‘Chris Rock of third grade’ — a chance to shine

Ruben Brosbe, a New York City teacher, has a soft spot for troublemakers. In this story, he shares how he got one of his favorite pranksters, Chris, to go through a day without interrupting class.

“Dealing with him taught me a valuable lesson, a lesson I’ve had to learn again and again: At the end of the day, everything that we want to accomplish as teachers is built on our relationships. It’s built on me saying to you, ‘I see you,’ ‘I care about you,’ ‘I care about what you care about and I’m going to make that a part of our class.’”

Cut from the same cloth: Why it matters that black male teachers like me aren’t alone in our schools

Being a black educator can be isolating, writes William Anderson, a Denver teacher. He argues that a more supportive environment for black educators could help cities like Denver improve the lives of black students.

“Without colleagues of the same gender and cultural and ethnic background, having supportive and fulfilling professional relationships is much harder.”

I went viral for walking my students home from school in Memphis. Here’s what got lost in the shuffle.

For years, Memphis teacher Carl Schneider walked his students home to a nearby apartment complex. Then a photograph of him performing this daily ritual caught the attention of the national media. In this essay, Schneider reminds readers that he shouldn’t be the focus — the challenges his students face should. His call to action:

“Educate yourself about the ways systemic racism creates vastly different Americas.”

Keeping order in classrooms full of thriving young people doesn’t leave much time to truly reflect on our impact on their minds beyond the knowledge we’re trying to impart.

It’s often not what we teach in the classrooms, but in our interactions with students, we can accomplish the most. A brief conversation, compliment, or smile after class can mean a lot to a student. These moments can stay with young people and shape their lives long after we have moved on to the next pupil or the next class.

When we first met in your English class, I thought I would hate you forever. I hated how you made sure I was wearing my school uniform correctly and how you told me to stand up straight before answering a question in class. I wondered what clothes or posture had to do with language arts. Well, the dignity and discipline you instilled in me through what I thought was nitpicking about clothing, posture, and grammar helped turn me into the successful individual I am today.

What I really couldn’t stand were your high expectations. You wouldn’t accept anything unless it were the best we could do or the best you thought we could do — and sometimes that was more than I thought I could do. At the very least, what you thought was my best was usually more work than I wanted to do — not just for class, but for anything I did.

We argued so many times, especially at the beginning of the year. I can’t remember how often you kept me in during lunch. I thought it was a punishment, but now I realize you were making sure I had time to cool down when things got particularly heated. I would raise my voice and burst into tears, and I know I even made threats a few times. But you didn’t lose your temper, and you might have been the only adult in my life who never did.

You listened to me, no matter how loud I got, because you knew I needed to be heard. You were patient with me, even if I didn’t care. And you gave me second chances no matter how many times I screwed up.

When I think about your English class today, I may not remember what you taught us about Beowulf, but I do remember what you taught me about myself. What I can now recognize as your faith in my abilities showed me my true value beyond what I or anyone else believed. You showed me that I could be whatever I wanted, which was the most important lesson I’ve ever learned.

— A student.

To my teacher:

Looking back on my life, I know it would have been drastically different if I hadn’t gotten you as my science teacher in grade 7. I hope it wouldn’t have been bad, but I know how much I could have missed out on, and I’m eternally grateful I didn’t. You opened my eyes to what I could accomplish and become in ways that I would never have thought possible without you. I was a kid from a small town, and it was all I knew. I could have been contented with that, but you made me want to see what lay beyond the fields I knew, and for that, I am forever grateful.

I don’t remember what the lesson was about. Maybe it was meant to be about technology, space exploration, or the environment, but it didn’t end up that way. You told us about what the future had looked like when you were our age, about your hopes and dreams for what humanity could become and what you could have been. You talked to us about what you’d accomplished and what you regretted. I still remember what you told us about your life and how you’d gotten there. Nobody had shown us how to connect the dots before, from a wide-eyed kid to someone who could make a difference. That’s when I realized how much was possible.

I had so many dreams, and I don’t think I could have accomplished any of them without your example. You changed the way I thought about life and learning. I know I can do anything with enough dedication and hard work.

My former teacher,

I’m writing to you as a former student and a friend. Too often, we climb through life without a look back to express our connection with others and our gratitude for their presence in our lives. You engage, inspire, and empower your students daily, and I wanted you to know that we notice how much you care.

You don’t just try to figure out how to get information into their heads. You care about your students as people. Your class was always an environment where I was eager to express myself! You made me feel like you cared about what I had to say and valued my strengths and unique abilities instead of just focusing on how you could erase my weaknesses. You were excited to hear what I had to say, and I loved it when you said you learned something new from me or you’d tell me I asked a question that made you think.

Thank you for your time, your patience, and your realness. Thank you for encouraging me, supporting me, and caring about me. Thank you for seeing me as a partner in education, as someone who can teach others and learn. Thank you for inspiring me to learn and to help others the way you have.

With gratitude,

Your friend (Graduated)

Most teachers do not receive the admiration and respect that they deserve. Many of them work extremely hard, dedicating their lives to educating youth . They do not do it for the paycheck; they do not do it for the praise. Instead, they teach because they want to make a difference . They enjoy putting their stamp on a child whom they believe will grow up and make a significant difference in the world.

Why Show Gratitude

Teachers have likely impacted their students in more ways than most people understand. Most adults have had teachers who have inspired them in some manner to be a better person. So, teachers deserve praise. It's important to say thank you to teachers as often as possible. Teachers love to feel appreciated. It makes them confident , which makes them better. Parents and students can have a hand in this. Take the time to show your gratitude and say thank you to your teachers and make them feel appreciated.

25 Ways to Thank a Teacher

These 25 suggestions provide a way of showing teachers, past and present, that you care. They are in no particular order, but some are more practical if you are currently a student and others will work better if you are an adult, and no longer in school. You will need to seek permission from or interact with the school principal for a few of these ideas.

  • Give teachers an apple. Yes, this is cliché, but they will appreciate this simple gesture because you took the time to do it.
  • Tell them that you appreciate them. Words are powerful. Let your teachers know what you love about them and their class.
  • Give them a gift card. Find out what their favorite restaurant or place to shop is and get them a gift card to indulge.
  • Bring them their favorite candy/soda. Pay attention to what they drink/snack on in class and keep them supplied periodically.
  • Send them an email. It does not have to be a novel, but tell them how much you appreciate them or let them know what kind of impact they have made on your life.
  • Send them flowers. This is a terrific way to say thank you to a female teacher. Flowers will always put a smile on a teacher's face.
  • Do something memorable for their birthday whether it is giving them a cake, having the class sing happy birthday or getting them a special gift. Birthdays are momentous days that should be recognized.
  • Write them a note. Keep it simple and let them know just how much they mean to you.
  • Stay late and help them get organized for the next day. Teachers have plenty to do after students leave for the day. Offer to help straighten their room, empty trash, make copies or run errands.
  • Mow their lawn. Tell them that you would like to do something special to show your appreciation and ask them if it would be OK to come over and mow their lawn.
  • Give them tickets. Teachers love to get out and have a good time. Buy them tickets to see the newest movie, their favorite sports team or a ballet/opera/musical.
  • Donate money toward their classroom. Teachers spend a lot of their own money on classroom supplies. Give them some cash to help ease this burden.
  • Volunteer to cover a duty. This is a fabulous way for parents to say thank you. In general, teachers are not excited about covering duties, such as acting as the scorekeeper at a game or chaperoning a prom, so they will be extra excited when you do. Ask the principal first if it is OK.
  • Buy them lunch. Teachers get tired of eating cafeteria food or bringing their lunch. Surprise them with a pizza or something from their favorite restaurant.
  • Be an exemplary student . Sometimes this is the best way to say thank you. Teachers appreciate students who are never in trouble, enjoy being at school and are excited to learn.
  • Buy them a Christmas present. It does not have to be elegant or expensive. Your teacher will appreciate anything that you get her.
  • Volunteer. Most teachers will appreciate the extra help. Let them know that you are willing to help in any area that you may be needed. Elementary school teachers will especially appreciate this help.
  • Bring donuts. What teacher does not love donuts? This will provide an excellent, tasty start to any teacher’s day.
  • Contact them when they are sick. Teachers get sick too. Check on them via email or social media or text and let them know you hope they get well soon. Ask them if they need anything. They will appreciate that you took the time to check on them.
  • Post on social media. If your child’s teacher has a Facebook account, for example, let him know how much you appreciate all the things he does.
  • Be a supportive parent. Knowing that she has tremendous parental support makes a teacher’s job much easier. Backing a teacher's decisions is an excellent way to show your appreciation.
  • Tell the principal how much you appreciate your teacher. The principal  evaluates teachers  regularly, and this type of positive feedback can factor into evaluations.
  • Give them a hug or shake their hand. Sometimes this simple gesture can speak volumes in showing your appreciation. Be cautious when giving a hug that it is appropriate.
  • Send them a graduation invite. Let your teachers know when you have reached a milestone such as graduating high school and/or college. They played a role in getting you there, and including them in this celebration will let them know just how much they meant to you.
  • Do something with your life. Nothing says thank you like being a success. Teachers want the best for every student that they teach. When you are successful, they are successful because they know they had some influence on you for at least nine months of your life.

How to Foster Gratitude in Schools

Your optimism is infectious. You’re like the first domino in the domino effect. You impact my life every class with the theories we learn, and I subsequently pass on this knowledge to my family and friends. Thank you for always giving our class 100%.

A note like this is every teacher’s dream—and one of us (Jeffrey Froh) was fortunate enough to receive it from a student recently. The note didn’t only warm Jeff’s heart; it illustrated to him how establishing positive relationships and feelings of connection in schools can help transform youth.

essay gratitude towards teachers

But with budget cuts intensifying the demands on teachers and other school personnel, how can schools strengthen students’ connections to their teachers, schools, and communities?

We propose one answer that’s not only free but can be infused into existing curricula across subjects and grade levels: gratitude.

The two of us have been among the first researchers to study gratitude among youth. Since we started our research program in 2006, we’ve worked with thousands of children and adolescents across the United States (and we’re now expanding this work to Australia, Britain, Japan, and Singapore). Though the field is still new, we’re already learning how gratitude does more than just make kids feel good; it also improves their mood, mental health, and life satisfaction, and it can jumpstart more purposeful engagement in life at a critical moment in their development, when their identity is taking shape.

For instance, a recent study of ours found that teens who had high levels of gratitude when entering high school had less negative emotions and depression and more positive emotions, life satisfaction, and happiness four years later when they were finishing high school. They also had more hope and a stronger sense of meaning in life. Another study of ours , which followed students over six months, shows that feeling grateful motivates adolescents to help others and use their strengths to contribute to society.

That’s wonderful for the grateful students. But what about the others? Can students learn to cultivate gratitude—and reap the benefits?

In our research, we’ve tested concrete ways that educators can actually make youth more grateful—with very positive results. This research points to specific practices and principles that educators can weave into their classrooms.

Perhaps the most commonly used technique for boosting gratitude—among adults and youth alike—is a gratitude journal .

In one early study , we asked middle school students simply to list five things for which there were grateful daily for two weeks, and we compared these students to others who were writing about hassles in their life or basic daily life events. Keeping a gratitude journal was related to more optimism and life satisfaction and to fewer physical complaints and negative emotions. Most significantly, compared to the other students, gratitude journalers reported more satisfaction with their school experience immediately after the two-week period, a result that held up even three weeks later.

This exercise is easy to implement. Regardless of the subject, educators can have students jot down what they are grateful for before class begins. To make the exercise more potent students can describe why they are grateful for the things they list. Entries could even be posted on a gratitude wall as an artful reminder. We have solid scientific evidence that these practices boost students’ moods, broaden their thinking, and energize greater learning.

Another exercise we’ve tested is the gratitude visit , in which students write a letter to someone who had helped them but whom they’d never properly thanked; the students read their letter to them in person, then later discuss their experience with others who also completed a gratitude visit.

When we conducted a study of the gratitude visit, we found that students who began the study low in positive emotions reported more gratitude and positive emotions immediately after the study, and greater positive emotions two months later, compared with students who didn’t do a gratitude visit.

Building on this research, and research by colleagues, we have identified several key principles that educators can use to promote gratitude in their students—principles that we’ve incorporated into our own gratitude curriculum . This curriculum is intended to subtly instill grateful thinking in youth without requiring an explicit focus on gratitude. It emphasizes three key principles that can support a gratitude journal, a gratitude visit, or simply the practice of gratefulness in everyday life. They are:

1. Notice intentions. Try to encourage students to appreciate the thought behind gifts they receive—to consider how someone noticed their need and acted on it. Research suggests this goes a long way toward cultivating “an attitude of gratitude” among children and adults alike. For students in particular, knowing that others believe in them and their potential motivates self-improvement. To get students to reflect on the intentions behind the gifts they receive, teachers can prompt them with a question such as, “Can you think of a time when a friend (or parent, teacher, or coach) noticed something you needed (e.g., lunch), or remembered something you care about (e.g., collecting feathers) and then provided you with those things?” As students give examples, teachers could have them elaborate: “How did you know they helped you on purpose? How did you feel after they helped you?”

2. Appreciate costs. We also find it important to emphasize that when someone is helpful, that person usually sacrifices time or effort to provide the help. For example, teachers could ask, “What are some things your friend gave up to help you with that project?” Playground aids could say, “Wow, for your friend to come play tag with you, he had to stop playing soccer, which I know is his favorite game.” A librarian could point out “how nice it was for that student to let you use the computer instead.”

3. Recognize the value of benefits. Teachers can also foster gratitude by reminding students that when others help us, they are providing us with “gifts.” This is one reason why, in our gratitude curriculum, we prompt students to focus on the personal value of the kind acts of others. One way teachers can bring this up is to have students complete the sentence stem “My day (or life) is better because…” and give examples such as, “… my teacher helped me when I didn’t understand something” or, “… my coach showed me how to be a better basketball player.”

Studies of our gratitude curriculum have found that children’s ability to think gratefully can be strengthened, and with this change comes improvements in their moods. A weekly version of the curriculum produced these effects up to five months later. A daily version had immediate effects (two days later) and led children to write 80 percent more thank you cards to their PTA; even their teachers found them happier. That it can be infused into any program focused on kind, helpful—or “pro-social”—behavior makes it practical, too.

What’s more, we believe the benefits of gratitude can spread beyond students to teachers and staff, not only improving their work but helping to prevent burnout. This, in turn, can influence parents, providing common ground for investing in youth.

Perhaps most of all, gratitude is a social emotion—it brings people together. After reading his student’s thank you note, for instance, Jeff became inspired. Knowing the student was stressed about graduate school applications, he treated her to some coffee and guidance—first-hand evidence that expressing gratitude can strengthen ties between teachers and students.

By promoting gratitude in schools, we’ll foster these kinds of connections on a much wider scale, helping both students and schools to thrive.

Robert Emmons, one of the world’s leading scientist and expert on the subject of gratitude reveals that feeling grateful have many benefits for your body, mind, and relationships, especially towards your parents.

You have to understand that your parents are the closest people you have when you were young and they are the ones that you spent the most time with. Well, this may not be true for everyone, but it is true for the majority of the people out there.

Kindness and success start from home. Another important point to remember is that you will someday become a parent too. And thus, how you treat your parents will somehow leave an impact on your relationship between you and your children.

If you are grateful for your parents and always be thankful for the good that they have brought into your life, you will feel the same when you become a parent.

What Are The Best Ways To Express Your Gratitude Towards Parents

There are plenty of ways how you can express your gratitude and thankfulness toward your parents. One of the easiest and most effective ways is to just say “Thank you”.

When your parents cook a meal for you, when they help you solve a problem, when they do something for you, when they guide you, when they buy you a new shoe, when they give you money to live, do not forget to say thank you.

Another good way to express your gratitude towards your parents is to spend more time with them and accompany them. You do not have to wait until when their hair turns gray or when they are 80 years old only to spend your time with them. Remember how your parents spend their time and life nurturing you, feeding you and making sure that you grow up becoming who you are today? Do the same and take good care of your parents, this is one of the best ways to express your thankfulness to them.

Some people express their gratitude through composing a song, some write thank you letters, some show it through hugs and kisses, and some bring their parents for vacation. What about you?

Regardless of what you do to show your gratefulness towards your parents, the key is to make sure that you do it before time runs out.

As you might already know, expressing your gratitude towards people is something that will not only enrich your life but also enrich the lives of the one you express your thanks to.

Studies have shown that expressing your gratefulness toward someone has many benefits including raising your self-esteem, making you happier, and also giving you a sense of fulfillment in life.

And when it comes to showing your appreciation, one of the most important figures you should be thankful for will be your teachers. Most people who practice writing gratitude lists often miss out their teachers in the list because they only interact with their teachers in school. And after they get into the working world, materials and people around them are their main focus.

Do you know that teachers are the people who you spend the most time with besides your parents and friends? More importantly, a teacher’s mission is to educate you and make sure that you learn what you are supposed to learn in school. Their mission also often intertwined with life and inspirational lessons to motivate you to succeed in life.

Take Les Brown, the motivational speaker as an example. In his motivational speech, he often quoted the person who inspired and changed his life, his teacher, Leroy Washington. Brown was born poor and was labeled as “educable mentally retarded”. Despite the fact that Brown was a slow learner, his teacher never abandoned him, instead, he inspired him by telling young Brown, “Never let someone’s opinion of you become your reality”.

As you can see, your teachers play an important role in shaping who you are today. You are where you are right now because of the influence of your teachers. Regardless of whether your teachers have positively impacted your life, you should feel grateful for them at all times.

There are plenty of ways how you can express your gratefulness toward your teachers, including:

1. Write a thank you essay to your teacher. Show your appreciation through words and this is not a test, hence, write with an open heart and sincerity.

2. Buy a best-selling book for your teacher. Somehow, teachers should love to read and always pursue for improvement, be it in career or at life, right?

3. Show your appreciation by doing homework and follow the advice from your teachers. This is one of the easiest ways to show your gratitude towards your teacher. Just do your best and excel in school.

4. Say a simple “Thank you”, after every class. This small and simple act will profoundly change your teacher’s life.

5. Remember your teacher’s birthday and buy him or her a gift as a token of appreciation. And your teacher will remember you for the rest of his or her life.

The above are just some of the ideas on how you can show your thankfulness towards your teacher. It is not the idea that matter, the key is that you do something that your teacher will remember and receive your appreciation. Even if it is as tiny as a simple “thank you”, your teacher will feel it.

As students, many teachers and educators will pass through your life without remembrance. Therefore, starting from now on, do something and to express your gratitude to the people have guided you in life.

There is an old saying, “A friend in need is a friend indeed”, and friends hold a special place in our heart as they are the ones who will always be by our side whenever we need them. We simply cannot live in this world all by ourselves without friends.

Thus, it is important to express our appreciation toward our friends, especially those who have helped us when we needed them. There are many types of friends, some you will want to keep no matter the situation, some you will want to leave or spend less time with, and some are good for social and sharing.

Writing an appreciation essay or letter to express your gratitude toward your friend is not something new. In fact, it has been around for ages and a lot of people are using this method to show their gratitude and build better and more intimate relationship with the people they spend their time with. You do not really have to follow any format when writing the essay to your friends. They are your best friends, they know you and they will accept whatever you good you are trying to tell them.

However, no matter how informal you are, you have to be sincere in writing it. You will lose the point of the gratitude letter if you sound fake and are not serious. All you need to do is to express how you feel about them. Tell your friends how much thankful you are and how much they meant to you in your life.

Besides that, to make your gratitude letter more powerful, you can include a small gift with it. It can be a keychain, a pen, a book, or even just a mint, your friend will appreciate your effort even more. You do not have to wait for the right and perfect moment to do this. If you seriously are grateful for your friends right now, take out a piece of paper, and write down your thoughts and thank them.

There are many blessings that come from being grateful for the good things we enjoy in life. And everyone has their own religion in their hearts. Deep within you, you believe in something, a higher power, a God, or something that has the power to create the world. Simply put, God wants us to learn to be grateful and thankful for all the gifts He has created for us.

This is not only about being spiritual, in fact, science has shown that people who are grateful for their Gods tend to be healthier and happier. You have probably heard the saying, “Count your blessings”, and do you know that when you literally count your blessings, you will increase your emotional and mental health? When people are not grateful, they tend to complain and blame everything and everyone. This is a negative act that will destroy your life. When you think something negative in your mind, you will feel stress, anxious, frustrated, and also angry. This will directly affect your health.

Therefore, learn to be grateful for everything in your life, especially God, the higher power that created you and everything else in the world. When you show your appreciation, you will access a calmer state, you will feel more peaceful and this makes you feel good about yourself, and your life.

One very simple act of showing your gratitude toward God through praying. Depending on what religion you believe in, everyone prays differently. The method how you pray does not really matter, the key is that you are sincere in showing your gratefulness. Furthermore, you can practice writing a gratitude list. Just write down whatever things that you want to be grateful for. It can be your cat, your dog, your house, your wife, your children, your boss, the air you are breathing, the computer you have, or whatever you can think of. Feel the appreciate and express the gratefulness deep within you.

School is one of the most important places in our lives because it is where almost everyone spends the most of their time there. It is a place that is meant to nurture us, guide us, and equip us with the necessary knowledge to prepare for the world. Everyone has their own unique memories about their school, some were meaningful and nostalgic, some were funny, and some were embarrassed.

Whatever thoughts and memories you have about your school, it does not really matter now as you have gone through it and the past will remain history forever. You simply cannot change that, but there is one thing that you can do that will impact your future life, and it is to show your gratitude toward your school and your teachers.

Schools are great places where young people get together and learn not just academically, but also about friendship, teamwork, leadership, life, and also love. On average, a normal person about 12 to 20 years in a classroom and this is where we learn to interact with others and this is also where our characters and attitudes started to grow.

So how can you show your appreciation toward your school and be grateful for what you have gone through? Well, you can start with two parts. First, you can show your gratitude toward your school by helping your school. You can make a donation when you have extra money or you can spend time into helping your school such as cleaning or repainting the building.

Next, you can also show your gratitude by writing appreciation letters to your teachers. You set a good example of being a grateful person by expressing your thoughts and let the new young generation to follow. There are plenty of ways how you can contribute to your schools and teachers. When you have the sincerity, the ideas will automatically come to you.

What is a Gratitude Day? It is a day to show appreciation for all things, big and small. Gratitude Day was first celebrated in 1965, and it was officially adopted by the United Nations Meditation Group and recognized as a day where people from around the world and from all walks of life show their gratefulness on whatever things in life.

Studies have shown that people who are grateful for the things they have and the life they are living right now are happier, calmer, and able to perform and achieve more. According to the Law of Attraction, the more you appreciate what you have, the Universe will give you more of it. For example, if you appreciate and are grateful for the money you have, you will have more of it.

So how can you celebrate this day and make it meaningful and interesting? First, you can take a moment to appreciate your family tree. Pay attention to your family members, notice how they have supported you in the past, and then express your gratefulness to them. Tell your family how much you love them. Buy a gift for them if you want to.

Next, be thankful for your community. From the server at your local restaurant, the policemen, the nurse, to the baker down the street in your neighborhood, say thank you to them. Give and show your gratitude to them. And do not forget about your friends too. Your friends are an important part of your life because you have gone through the thick and thin with them.

Besides that, thank yourself for being who you are right now and for whatever you have had in your life. When you appreciate yourself, you will have more confidence and thus, able to accomplish more. When you show your gratitude toward the things you have in life, you will appreciate them and in return, you will live an abundant life.

  • Thank You Speech for Teachers

ffImage

Introduction to the Speech

The term "teach" comes from the Middle English word "techne," which means "to demonstrate or instruct." A teacher is a person that has played an important role in everyone's life. He or she shows their students the right path and educates them in the areas of wisdom, virtue, competence, and so on. Here we have provided both long and short thank you speeches for teachers for the students of Classes 1 to 12.

Long Thanks Giving Speech for Teachers

Greetings everyone! I am ABC and today I have the pleasure of hosting this program and delivering the thank you speech to teachers who have made us what we are today. This is a very emotional time for all of us because, on one hand, we are moving towards a new life. On the other hand, we are leaving our favorite place, our school, where we spent the most formative years of our lives.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of our teachers for preparing us to compete in the global marketplace. Our teachers are a symbol of our strength and will always be a  wonderful source of support for us all. They are tough in the form of fathers and loving in the form of mothers, caring for us as if we were friends, strict disciplinarians but always looking out for us. Our teachers are great individuals who have shaped us after our parents and made us wise to deal with the world. We've accepted everything and worked hard to overcome our flaws as a team.

I recall being a timid and introverted student when I first enrolled in this class. I've struggled with public speaking, and today I'm giving a gratitude speech for teachers who helped me overcome my shyness. This is due to the effort and care they showered on me. They didn't leave any stone unturned in their efforts to alter my personality and attitude.

I don't think I need to say that they've done a pretty good job of preparing me for the outside world. The teacher resembles a mentor and serves as an excellent role model for students. Every word spoken by the teacher is embraced by the students. Teachers are excellent and selfless people who accept each student without prejudice.

In comparison to other students, I found it more difficult to complete my projects and assignments. You took extra time to prepare me for the real world' and paid close attention to me. I recall a time in class 11 when I had given up all hope. You all encouraged me in your own unique way and shared stories of great people who rose to fame after adversity.

You instilled in me the importance of working hard and not compromising on small matters. All of these things I've learned from you. I am confident that all of my friends would like to express their gratitude to our dear teachers, as we are always grateful to all of you.

On behalf of myself and my classmates, I would like to express my gratitude to all of the  Teachers who helped us in our journey.

Short Thanking Speech for Teachers

When I first met you, I despised you. You made me stand up straight, which I despised. I despised the way you forced me to wear my uniform correctly. I despised the way you forced me to speak properly. Most of all, I despised the way you insisted on only accepting my work if it was the best I could do. And the best always seemed to necessitate more effort than I was willing to expend.

At first, we had a lot of disagreements. I recall being kept in a lot during lunch. And, despite my screaming and threats – and even a few tears – I recall you never lose your cool. You've always been very patient with me. You were always willing to listen to me whenever I needed to be heard.

I consider that period to be pivotal in my growth into the person I am today. You instilled discipline in me. You instilled in me the value of respect. You taught me much more than English, which was what you were supposed to be teaching me. You taught me that I was capable of much more than I or others believed. Instead of being a clown, I could be a success.

A motivator. An inspiration. An Enthusiast. These three qualities are just a few of the many you show every day with all of your students, including me.

Too often, we rush through the ‘ropes of life,' oblivious to the importance of taking the time to express our gratitude and genuine appreciation for the support you so generously provide for our development as not only students but also as global citizens.

Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for seeing me as a learning and sharing partner. Thank you for allowing yourself to be who you are. Thank you for being one of the few outstanding educators in the world. May you be an inspiration to others to achieve greatness as you have.

10 Lines for Thanks Giving Speech for Teachers

We have curated 10 lines for students of Classes 1 to 3 which will help them in writing a gratitude speech for teachers.

Thank you to all of the teachers who are present at this school. Because of your love, care, advice, and support, all of us students will become so capable.

For us, all of our professors have been a source of inspiration.

As I've gotten older, I've realized that teachers play a critical role in the lives of children.

They aid in the development of our interpersonal skills, communication skills, writing skills, overall gestures, and presentation skills.

For any school or educational center to exist, teachers must be present.

The great teachers who have been a part of this journey have given me the courage and self-confidence that I have today.

My professors have led and supported me as if they were my parents and friends, and as a result, they hold a special place in my heart today.

I believe I have learned a lot from first grade to the last session of 12th grade.

Thank you to all of my professors for helping me become a better citizen. Thank you all for attending this meeting.

Teachers have a significant influence on our lives. They influence our lives by passing on their wisdom, and they never fail to inspire us to dream, fight, and never give up. They work tirelessly every day to ensure our success. It's critical to recognize and honor the teachers who have devoted their lives to the advancement of the country.

6 Reasons Why I'm Grateful for My School

Springring Students' Blog

From extracurricular to academics, my school has assisted me in exploring a multitude of skills and activities. As a result, I am thankful for school since it has helped me discover my passions, pushed me to seek new experiences, and altered my personality. I am grateful for:

1 - MY GROWTH IN CONFIDENCE

As a child, I struggled with confidence and social awkwardness. On the other hand, participating in activities in school provided me with the opportunity to meet other students who shared my hobbies and interests. I gradually transitioned from an introverted position to a more social one through increasing interaction, making new acquaintances and gaining confidence. I can’t thank my school enough for having such a positive impact on my personality.

Furthermore, the activities I have participated in at school have provided me with leadership opportunities, competitions, and partnerships. For example, serving as vice president of the Student Council taught me to be a leader and take command.

2 - MY TEACHERS

The education process, which we started by learning to read and write, continues throughout life. We complete these processes with our teachers. As a result, I would like to thank everyone, especially my teachers, whose efforts I can not ignore. The people who have built me into the person I am. As a school teacher and as an educator who had the power to influence my mind to a great extent. Thank you to all teachers that created an environment of enthusiasm for learning, appreciation for growing and room for making mistakes along the way.

3 - MY FRIENDS

I am grateful to my friends for being there for me in my happy and challenging times. The ones that stood by my side and supported me in every decision I made. I am grateful for being able to cry with them over an exam we didn’t do well on. I am thankful to them for making my school experience memorable and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

4 - MY EXPOSURE TO DIVERSITY

My school had an incredibly diverse community which taught me about acceptance. I discovered that not everyone speaks the same language, dresses the same way, or eats the same foods at break time. I graduated from high school as a global citizen, interacting with people from many backgrounds and perspectives.

5 - MY LIFE LESSONS

My school did more than just teach me the academic curriculum. It gave me lessons in life that I would not have learned at home. But, it aided in my development as a responsible global citizen. For example, you can become or achieve anything if you work extremely hard and put all of your efforts into it.

6 - MY IBDP CURRICULUM

I never anticipated feeling grateful for my IBDP curriculum because it is a lot of work and sometimes more than a student can handle. But, I am aware that the quantity of work I had to complete during the last two years of school cannot be compared to the amount of work I would be assigned during college. Even though it required me to pull all-nighters, I am grateful for the knowledge and abilities I received from my subjects.

It is painful to know that my school life is coming to an end and that a new chapter of my life will begin. However, I believe that school truly prepared me for my future chapters. As a result, I am prepared to embark on my new journey.

Thank you Speech for Teachers

Teachers Day is a significant occasion for both the teachers as well as the students. It is a day for the students to thank their teachers for everything they have done for their welfare. A teacher’s prime concern is only the welfare of his/her students. That’s what s/he loves to do and is involved in it 24/7. What could then be better for the students than to express their gratitude towards the teachers by delivering a delicately written Thank you speech? A Speech written especially for the purpose will hit the mark and leave the teachers spell bound. Speeches have the potential to change the course of history and mend broken relationships.

Thank you Speech for Teachers on teacher’s day, farewell day etc

Below we have given short and Long Thank You Speech for Teachers in English.

These speeches are written in simple language to make them easily memorable and to impress the audience.

These speeches can be used during the functions of Teachers Day and other similar occasions.

You will surely impress your teachers and others present if you choose one of the below given speeches for the event.

Thank you Speech for Teachers – 1

Respected Principal, Teachers and My Dear Friends!

First of all, I would like to welcome you all to the occasion of our farewell day. I have been given this opportunity to host the program today. Well, this is a very emotional moment for all of us as we are getting promoted to a new life on the one hand; whereas on the other hand we are also leaving behind our most favourite place, i.e. our school where we spent the most significant growing years of our lives.

I would like to utilize this moment to thank all our teachers who prepared us for the world outside. Our teachers have been an epitome of strength and a great pillar of support to all of us. They have been as strict as father and as loving as mother, equally caring like a friend, a strict disciplinarian and yet always so approachable. Our teachers are wonderful human beings because they have accepted all of us with all the weaknesses and have worked upon us to overcome those weaknesses.

I still remember, I joined this school in Standard V, when I used to be the shy and introvert person. I faced difficulties in speaking in public and today, I am standing here to deliver the farewell speech. This is all because of the great and loving teachers I came across in this school. They never left any stone unturned to change my personality and attitude. Needless to say, they have worked on me even more to prepare me for the outside world. A teacher is essentially a mentor and a role model for the student. The student believes in the teachers and every word they say. They are noble and selfless people coz they accept each of their student wholeheartedly without any bias and favouritism.

My parents always say, that school period is the golden period in everyone’s life and I realize it now when I stand amidst all my favourite teachers and fellow friends to bid goodbye for a newer world.

I would especially take out some moment from this event to thank Ma’m X and Sir A for being my guide always and showing me the right direction and path to walk on. It was more difficult for me than the other students to accomplish the projects and tasks you assigned to us. You both have spent extra hours and shown special care to me in order to prepare me for the ‘real world’. I still remember the day in Class XI, when I had given up and lost all hopes; both of you encouraged me in your own special way and shared examples of great people who failed in the beginning and later became famous people.

You taught us to be persistent and chase the dream without compromising on small issues; that was one of several lessons I have learnt from all of you. I am sure, all my friends would like to share the word of gratitude with our loving teachers, as we have always been very grateful to all of you.

I thank all the teachers, Principal and all other staff on behalf of the fellow students and myself.

Thank you for being an indispensable part of our lives!

Thank you Speech for Teachers – 2

Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Fellow Students!

Today is a very emotional moment for us as it’s the last day of our school and after this event most of us will choose different paths in life. This event is organised annually, giving an opportunity to each one of us to thank each other, exchange contact details and promise each other to stay connected as long as possible; but I am a bit more lucky to get an opportunity to host this programme.

This is a special occasion for me and I am going to utilize this platform to thank the entire institution for nurturing me with so much of love and care. I would especially like to thank the teachers who have worked so hard towards educating us and transforming us from a raw to a mature and sensible individual.

I know, my life is going to change soon as I am moving to a new world entirely, where I’ll have to make my own decisions and there will be none to guide me with so much of intensity as my teachers have guided me so far. But I am sure, the lessons that I’ve learnt from my teachers here would remain forever with me.

A special thank to the Principal Sir, who trusted me and allowed me to take admission in this school even though I was late by almost 2 months due to some family mishap. This school for me is like my first home as I have spent most of the hours of my day here.

I can’t thank enough Miss A for taking care of me like a mother does to her child. There have been times when I’ve lost the hopes and she has scolded me like a mother, supported me like a friend and guided me like a mentor. Ma’am, you have not only built up my confidence, but have also taught me to be strong. You have prepared me for all the future battles and struggles. My life with you and under you has taken the best shape it ever could and I am going to miss you forever.

I would also like to thank our PT Sir, who has been very particular about the physical fitness and would not let us miss the class. Sir, though you have taught us the benefit of healthy living and physical fitness, but the best lesson I’ve learnt from you is about the time management.

While I’ve got the occasion to thank all my teachers, I can’t miss this moment to thank Miss B, our Arts teacher. For a bland person like me, she introduced ‘arts’ as sunshine. I could literally never even hold a colour pencil right, while she pushed me to win the drawing competition in standard VIII. Truly thanks, Ma’am.

This entire school is a treasure of knowledge for me and I’ve cherished each and every moment I’ve spent here. Though I am going to be physically away, I will always carry in my heart, the love, care, attention, blessing and teachings I’ve got from here.

Once again, thank you to all my teachers!

Thank You ABC School

Thank you Speech for Teachers – 3

Good morning respected principal, teachers and my dear friends.

I, on behalf of the entire school management welcome you all to this special ‘Teacher’s Day’ assembly session today.

Thank you so much to all the teachers present here in this school. We as students have been able to uplift ourselves just because of your love, care, guidance and support. Each of our teachers has been the motivation spirit for us in all respects. Being a teacher is a big time job. It is not limited to only that few hours of teaching in the classroom; it is much more beyond those hours. From preparing the teaching contents (before coming to the classrooms) to prepare the test papers; and then to conduct special mentoring sessions for their students. Everything that a teacher does is commendable with due respect to the efforts they put in.

Being a grown up, now I have realized that teachers play a very crucial role in the child’s life. Many major lessons of life beyond the defined syllabus lessons and scripted books are taught by our teachers only. They help us in building our friendship skills, our communication skills, our writing skills, our overall gesture and presentation skills, etc. Thanks to all the teachers for making us learn the tactics of overall existence.

For any school or educational centre to exist, it is very important for the teachers to be present there. Without teachers, there is nobody to dedicatedly execute the education practically for which these entities are built. For the morale upbringing of the child, presence of teacher in the life is very important. Teachers help in building the child effectively and efficiently.

We as students owe a huge amount of love, care, affection and respect towards each and every teacher that has ever been present in our life. I am obliged to have witnessed the presence of such great entities in my life. Since my kids care school till this last session of class 12th, I feel so content and complete when I look back on what I have learnt. This learning is much more than the scripted books.

The courage and confidence that’s built in me today is because of the wonderful teachers that have been a part of my journey. Thank you teachers acknowledging your efforts and dedication towards the upbringing of a child are completely incredible. My teachers have guided me like my parents and supported me like my friends. Because of which, they today hold such a special place in my heart.

Thank you teachers for making me a citizen that inherits a true character. This has been possible because of the learning given by you. I respect you all for all the deeds that you have done. Trust me existence of educational institutions without you people is just a hollow building, and I am sure the school management agrees with my thought. A teacher is by all means the most essential element in the schools. Thank you so much to each of the teacher.

Thank you everybody for being a part of this session. Please always stay connected to your teachers as they surely have something excellent to make you learn. Thank you!

Thank you Speech for Teachers – 4

Good morning to all. It is a pleasure seeing you all gathered here.

Today, through my speech I would like share a token of thanks to all the teachers that have been a part of my life.

Each teacher deserves tremendous love, care, affection and respect. We all should acknowledge the importance of presence of a teacher in our lives. They have made us capable of who we are today, they have built our character and have made us realize the path towards our dreams and towards the ultimate success. Our teachers have enabled us to identify the things that are good for us, they have helped us in knowing which path should we choose for.

Teachers are the strongest pillars on which all these educational institutions are built. It is a great achievement on being a teacher. You as individuals teach so many students and add on to the upliftment of the society by improving the literacy rate of the country. Teachers are a perfect blend of theoretical (educational) and practical (life) learning.

Thank you teachers for being the most essential inspirational source that has enabled us to be the person of dignity. You have built our character and have showcased us the path of success. You have try inspired each one of us to have dreams and have a focused approach in achieving these dreams and goals.

You as teachers have helped us brighten our future and made a person of true character because of the guidance that you have given us throughout our journey. You have nurtured us with the education and all the motivational learning. You as teachers have the power to mold the generations and make them understand the value of everything. Teachers tend to have a great emotional impact on the students due to which the learning effect from teachers is more intact and effective.

Thank you teachers for all the time that you spent on the students. Each of your small effort has made us capable of leading a great life today. Words are few but feelings are limitless to express our gratitude towards your efforts. You as teachers nurture so many children and work towards inspiring and motivating them for their own self. Presence of teacher is one’s life makes it more meaningful and drives his or her intentions on to the right path.

Though a single day has been dedicated or announced to praise the efforts of teachers; bit I would like to say you all that this entity ‘Teacher’ deserves the round of applause and appreciation every second. They are the ones who built the nation’s literacy gap and nurture the great citizens of the country.

Thank you teachers for existing in our lives and making it meaningful. You have been the parent at school. Your presence in our lives has shaped our future for the betterment of our and the overall country. Thank you for each and every thing that you have done.

Thank you! And, also a big thank to the entire audience for hearing me and also sharing your views. Thank you!

Thank you Speech for Teachers – 5

A very Good Morning to all the teachers present here and dear students. Today, we have assembled to celebrate a special day, a day when we get to thank our wonderful teachers for their contribution in transforming our lives. I am going to do just that from this dais today, on behalf of all the students of this school.

In home, our parents are our guardians, but when we step out of our homes, our teachers become our custodians. In school, there is no mother and no father, only teachers and lots of friends.

In teachers, we find a strict disciplinarian like a father and also a loving and considerate nature of a mother.  First of all, I would like to thank our teachers for being our mother and father, outside the safe precinct of our houses.

Our biological mother and father pay for our dues and other materialistic requirements, but the relationship that we share with our teachers is more spiritual than materialistic. A teacher is a mentor, a torchbearer when we are facing darkness. S/he often is our only hope when we lose confidence in our own self. Thank You teachers, for being the greatest inspiration of our lives.

A teacher’s contribution to the society and the nation is immeasurable and can’t be expressed in a single speech. A teacher is someone who has kept the interest of others above self.

Speaking of monetary benefits, the profession of a teacher is not very lucrative, yet some noble souls chose the profession passionately. Just because, they want to help mentor lives like ours. They have a passion for service towards their students. For which they deserve a huge round of applause.

They display an inexhaustible spirit in answering bravely, every question that we throw at them. Their answers never disappoint us and are always able to clear our doubts. Thank you teachers for all that academic support you give us.

Apart from helping us in academics, teachers help us in all the walks of our life. They don’t only teach us subjective knowledge but also moral values. Our conduct in the society is by and large a reflection of our culture at home and the teachings of our teachers.

Parents often pamper their child, often neglecting his/her misconduct or a bad attitude. In this case a teacher appears as a true unbiased mentor, preventing the child from being drifted away on wrong path.  Thank You teachers for being our moral guardians.

Without a teacher, students will have nowhere to go. They will be like misguided souls, lacking in motivation without a spirit to move on. A teacher is equipped with all the skills to turn a stone into a gem, to turn a dull, negligent student into a progressive and composed student.   Thank you teachers for this motivation and support.

Teachers never leave us alone on the journey of life. They share our joys, sorrows and even aspirations. We might move on and leave the teachers behind, but a teacher is always surrounded by aspiring and curious students. They smile through our faces, they cry through our failures and they cheer through our successes. Such is the level of devotion of a teacher, that s/he feels the joy of success with success of his/her student/s. Didn’t we owe a big thanks to our teachers?

Sometimes I wonder if would have achieved anything without my teachers; either in academics or in life. Even the courage to address you all from this dais today is gift of my teachers. Like me, they have inspired thousands of students, giving them a motive in life. Today, on behalf of those students, I thank the whole teacher community from the bottom of my heart.

Thank You!!

I remember him well: his toothy smile. His spiky shag haircut. His high cheekbones and ringing laugh.

I also remember what I called the teenager. Queer. Fairy. Even worse names.

We attended Anaheim High in the mid-1990s. I was a senior, he was a freshman. He was one of the few out students on a campus that was overwhelmingly Latino. He endured taunts, epithets and bullying, while cutting down his antagonists with withering insults more often than not.

It didn’t stop me and others.

I learned my homophobia from macho cousins and a father so anti-gay that when my classmate came over to our house for my sister’s party, my dad forbade us to go in the pool, lest something infect us. Homosexuality, my thinking went, was not just an abomination. “They” were a threat to the people I loved — Americans, Mexicans, Catholics, good people — by merely existing.

Americans approve of LGBTQ+ people living as they wish, but their support drops for trans people, poll shows

American support for LGBTQ+ people has surged since 1985, but support for transgender and nonbinary people lags, according to a new poll for The Times.

June 6, 2024

When my best friend, Art, told me to check my prejudice, I’d spout off a litany of biblical verses — Leviticus this, Genesis that, a hell of a lot of Paul. Nothing could convince me that I should stop my nastiness, let alone accept gay and lesbian people as normal.

An HBO movie changed everything. In Mr. Elder’s biology class, we watched “And the Band Played On,” based on the bestselling book by Randy Shilts about the early days of AIDS. I turned away in disgust at any hint of same-sex affection. But the story — about how the Reagan administration and society at large let a terrible disease spread because it first emerged in the gay community — haunted me.

I might have thought homosexuality to be terrible — but an uncaring government that let people die because of who they were was far worse. A few months later, I went up to my classmate and apologized. I was sincere, but I’ll never forget the understandable skepticism on his face.

I’ve been trying to atone for my sins ever since.

I told my brother when he entered fourth grade to tell me when he and his friends played a schoolyard game called Smear the Queer. One person randomly got the label, and everyone else threw a football at him. I knew it wasn’t a matter of if my brother would join in but when — because I was taught that game, too.

One day, he came home excitedly and reported that he and his friends finally played Smear the Queer. I explained what the word meant and what the game represented, and made him swear to never join again.

Professionally, I went on to slam politicians and groups that try to deny LGBTQ+ people their rights and dignity. Today, I have close LGBTQ+ friends and still get in heated debates with loved ones about their latent and overt homophobia.

I am an imperfect ally, though. I cannot erase the hurt I inflicted before, so I remember those dark days to remind myself that I can always do better.

That’s why a recent poll done for The Times by NORC at the University of Chicago and paid for by the California Endowment brought me some hope about this country’s long, painful journey toward accepting LGBTQ+ people — and was also a gut check on how much work there still is to do.

Christians hold signs as they gathered to pray and protest

The survey was a sequel of sorts to a pioneering 1985 Times project asking people how they felt about homosexuality. The differences between then and now are stark. Back then, 73% felt gay and lesbian relationships were wrong, which an accompanying Times story noted was almost unchanged from a similar 1973 Gallup poll. This most recent poll? Just 28% felt that way.

In 1985, 51% of respondents thought there should be workplace protections for gay and lesbian people. Today, the number is 77%. The older poll showed that 35% were “uncomfortable around gays.” This time around, the question wasn’t even asked.

The 1985 Times study was released with no photos or comment. This time around, we published our findings with moving essays by my current and former LGBTQ+ colleagues . The poll and essays were part of a project called “Our Queerest Century” that is live on our website and will appear in print as a special section June 23 .

These surveys show that beliefs do change with time and exposure. But while there’s more acceptance of gay and lesbian people today, a new intolerance has emerged. The 1985 poll didn’t ask about transgender people. The Times/NORC poll did — and the results are discouraging.

More than a third said they would be very or somewhat upset if their child came out as gay or lesbian (in 1985, the figure was 89%). But if the child came out as trans or nonbinary, the percentage increased to 48%. When it came to letting people “[live] their lives as they wish,” only 19% “strongly or somewhat disapproved” if the person was gay or lesbian. Trans or nonbinary? 31%.

Even more telling was a question about whether increased attention on trans and nonbinary people in the media and politics was good or bad. Only 16% thought it was good, while 40% thought it was bad (42% answered “neither”).

World & Nation

The Times Poll : American Views of Gays: Disapproval, Sympathy

In the midst of the AIDS epidemic, the American public has not eased its profound disapproval of homosexuality, but there are growing expressions of sympathy for homosexuals, the Los Angeles Times Poll has found.

Dec. 20, 1985

The poll unsurprisingly shows that politics and religion correlate with people’s opinions on LGBTQ+ issues. But I also feel that a lack of familiarity plays a huge role. While 72% of American adults in the Times/NORC survey said they knew someone who identified as gay or lesbian, only 27% said the same about transgender or nonbinary people. When you have a come-to-Jesus moment with someone you’ve been taught to see as “different,” you quickly realize how foolish you are.

Case in point: me, again.

A decade after my shameful behavior toward my Anaheim High classmate, I read a powerful column by Times sportswriter Mike Penner that revealed he would return from vacation as Christine Daniels.

“I am a transsexual sportswriter,” Penner wrote . “It has taken more than 40 years, a million tears and hundreds of hours of soul-wrenching therapy for me to work up the courage to type those words.”

I was so moved that I sent a note of appreciation through a mutual friend. To my surprise and delight, Daniels wanted to meet me to talk about dealing with sudden fame. I was then at the OC Weekly, and The Times had featured me and my column, “¡Ask a Mexican!” , leading to an avalanche of attention.

I was nervous, and not just about meeting a writer whose work I had long admired. I didn’t know anyone who identified as transsexual and worried that I would offend Daniels by asking an inappropriate question or using the wrong name or pronoun.

Pride flag is raised by a man in uniform outside a building while another man in uniform watches.

At a panini spot in Old Towne Orange, Daniels quickly disabused me of my low-key transphobia. I found myself focusing on the person before me: Kind. Hilarious. Brilliant. Happy. In the Weekly, I continued to proudly bash the ghouls who ridiculed Daniels, all the way to the sad day in 2009 when Mike Penner, who had returned to using that byline in The Times, died by suicide .

Today, as city councils reject calls to fly rainbow flags during Pride Month and school boards ban books and curricula that touch on anything LGBTQ+, as adults protest drag time story hours in the name of protecting children and hurl invectives at drag nuns while mocking the rise of “Latinx,” I remember my journey from hatred to humility.

I asked Bamby Salcedo, president and chief executive of the TransLatin@ Coalition, about the best way to change closed hearts and minds.

It’s not “about doing a training or checking a DEI box” she said, referring to diversity, equity and inclusion; it’s about having difficult conversations from a place of love, “because hate doesn’t win.” A heartfelt push back to someone’s anti-LGBTQ+ attitudes, Salcedo said, can “put out that seed of change. And if you plant it, la cosecha sale [the harvest comes].”

I remind myself that people can change — and those who’ve experienced a road to Damascus moment must urge others to follow our path.

The most avoidable sin is ignorance, after all, and all sinners must repent. Take it from one.
