List of best creative writing courses in Singapore

About Creative Writing

Creative writing starts with imagination. As imagination has no boundaries so does creative writing is boundaryless. Writing such as technical, formal, research, and legal is based on facts, so there are restrictions. You cannot use imaginative language, in facts whereas, there are no norms to be followed in creative writing.

Your perspective in creative writing is the most unique thing and that’s why your writing stands out as the most unique. Some use creative writing as a tool to vent their thoughts while some use it to journal their day-to-day experiences.

Creative Writing Courses in Singapore Help Every Age

Creative writing helps everyone in one or the other way. From children to old age people, anyone can utilize the benefits of writing and make their life more meaningful.

Children may go through the processing of many thoughts. They may not know what would help them and what would not. But, insisting they write daily might help them in many ways. A child may feel insecure about sharing his thoughts and this may create anxiety and depression. Anxiety and depression are difficult to overcome.

Imagining creatively and writing down the thoughts that come to his mind, a child can learn to boost his confidence and overcome anxiety and depression. Creative writing also helps his imagination power to grow. Creative writing courses in Singapore help children achieve their skills in writing.

Young Generation:

Everyone is busy out there doing jobs, businesses, daily work, etc. No one gets the time to relax and feel calm. As a way to relax your mind and be calm, you can write a daily journal. Daily journal means to report the occurrence of events on a daily basis and learn from them. This helps in understanding what is happening in your life and also makes you feel relaxed by rearranging those thoughts which are going random.

Old Generation:

Old age comes with its own perks. You may have retired from your work. Your health may not support you. All your kids and grandkids might be busy doing their work. This may make you feel lonely and make it hard to continue your life. In order to make yourself busy and to keep your mind fresh to enjoy life, you can do creative writing consistently on a daily basis. This helps you to keep your mind occupied feel less distressed and let you understand a new phase of life.

Types of Creative Writing

Poetry writing:.

Poetry writing is an art. It is like music that comes with a flow and rhythm. A poem uses a short number of words with larger and deeper meanings. Below is an example of a few lines from the poem Middle Passage by Robert Hayden.

“8 bells. I cannot sleep, for I am sick

with fear, but writing eases fear a little

since still my eyes can see these words take shape

upon the page & so I write, as one

would turn to exorcism. 4 days scudding,

but now the sea is calm again. Misfortune

follows in our wake like sharks (our grinning

tutelary gods).”

From these lines, one can deduce different meanings and perspectives. How Robert explains writing eases his fears in just a few lines.

Novel Writing:

This is the favorite thing that most writers love to do. Writing a novel and publishing it in your name and receiving a bestseller award is what writers love to do. But writing a Novel is not an easy thing to do. It requires many skills like imagination, vocabulary, character development, good story, etc. This type of creative writing is the most loved one. The greatest authors of all time are Leo Tolstoy, William Shakespeare, James Joyce, and many more. You can read their writing and get inspired by how to write.

Daily Journal Writing:

This type of creative writing includes writing the occurrence of the events daily. If you are going through a tough phase in life and don’t know what to do and whom to tell, then you can start writing a daily journal. It is best to exercise to express your feelings and let the negativity inside you go from within you. You can write about 250 to 500 words daily. There is no specific format for writing the daily journal. Whatever comes to your mind, you can note it down. This can also be a learning exercise for you.

Playwriting :

Playwriting is intended to be used in theatres. Playwriting is focused on character development so that there is one protagonist and antagonist. Having two opposite characters makes the play more interesting for the audience. While writing a play one has to keep theatre in his mind. The special effects used in theatre, the entry, and exit of actors, and the costumes according to the character all are necessary from a playwriting point of view.

Scriptwriting :

Scriptwriting is similar to playwriting. The difference between scriptwriting and playwriting is scriptwriting is written for movies and television shows and playwriting is written for theatre. Everything else remains the same. Scriptwriting demands character development and an interesting story as in playwriting.

Fiction Writing :

Fiction writing is based on plot, character, and meaning by the writer’s imagination. Fiction writing is utilized on Television, in Plays, Movies, etc. The best authors for fiction writing are J K Rowling, Stephen King, and Ernest Hemingway.

Non-Fiction Writing:

In this type of writing, there is a slight difference from fiction writing. Nonfiction writing consists of real events and not the imagination of the writer

Master of Arts in Creative Writing and Publishing

Master (Coursework)

Provided by

  • School of Humanities (SOH)

Programme Type

Full-time, Part-time

SoH Graduate (Coursework) programme

As the centre of English language culture in Asia, Singapore’s social and civic influence and allure are enormous. In the fostering and shaping of the next generation of Singaporean writers, NTU has been the dominant institution for the past decade. Few Singaporean writers of esteem, locally or internationally, are without a connection to NTU – from Singapore’s greatest poet Boey Kim Cheng to young internationally-celebrated novelists such as Sharlene Teo and Amanda Lee Koe. The Creative Writing and Publishing MA aims to extend this influence to publishers – a contingent that will not only shape the civic appeal of Singapore literature for decades to come, but fan out across Asia and act as Singapore’s representatives to the rest of the literary and publishing world.

We have an incomparable teaching track record through our offering of an undergraduate Minor in Creative Writing – the only programme of its kind in Singapore and South-East Asia, as well as graduate research programmes in Creative Writing at the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy levels.

This long-standing collaboration dates back to 2011 when NTU ran The Singapore Writing Residency programme, with a grant from NAC to NTU for established local and international writers of excellent standing. We are currently the sole academic institution in Singapore managing the largest writing residency programme in the Asia Pacific region.

Learn about digital design and hone your publishing skills especially in emerging digital technologies including podcasts, audio books, games, web design and publishing for tablets, e-readers, and mobile devices.

  • Student-driven customization Besides the core areas of creative writing and publishing, you may elect to take courses across either creative writing or publishing depending on your interest. You will also have the option to either write a creative thesis or undertake an internship in a related industry.

The admission requirements are as follow:

  • A good bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • International applicants whose medium of instruction was not in English at the tertiary level should have an IELTs score of 7 or a good TOEFL Score of 100*.
  • Candidates may be interviewed to assess their suitability for postgraduate studies and for a holistic assessment of their academic capacity.
  • No prior course work or training in creative writing or publishing is required.

MA Creative Writing

The programme develops the writers, editors, publishers, cultural curators and writing teachers of tomorrow who create narratives that migrate from Singapore to the world's exponentially growing literary production and publishing market.

You will acquire a deep appreciation of the written word and the construction of written forms such as poetry, creative non-fiction, fiction, screenplays and ficto-critical writing through standard modules and regular writing workshops and peer learning.

You will gain both breadth and depth through workshops devoted to all the major genres – fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama – followed by a creative thesis project written in the genre of your choice. This sustained study of writing, editing and publishing provides you with a critical, theoretical and historical framework for analysing literature, art, communication and arts pedagogy.

Intensive graduate writing workshops with visiting writers (including Asian and Singapore voices), consultations with our published writing faculty, workshop peers, guest writers and industry professionals improve writing, reading and editing abilities, while providing meta-lessons in perception, creative problem-solving, social-emotional intelligence, communicative precision, interpersonal diplomacy, community, empathy and human nature.

You will be able to participate in local and regional writing festivals to build awareness of networks, circulation and reception of the written word. Graduates have already made a significant mark through works published by international literary publishers, as well as winning literary awards, particularly in Singapore.

Professional education: Learn from established and emerging writers from Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Professional network: Study alongside novelists, poets, playwrights, video game writers, screen writers and non-fiction writers.

Industry connection: Attend and participate in literary festivals in Singapore and Southeast Asia.

Real-world knowledge: Develop your understanding of the Singapore and global publishing industries.

The LASALLE MA framework is one that aims to provide graduates with a competitive edge that will meet the demands of the dynamic cultural and creative sector.

The MA framework has the following common structure:

Core modules You will study three core modules* according to your chosen programme of study. These modules aim to equip you with discipline-specific skills relevant to your area of research inquiry. *For the MA Art Therapy and MA Music Therapy programmes, there will be additional modules for clinical placements.

Common module – the Agora The common module, the Agora, has been designed to prepare you for the intensely collaborative experience of a creative career. You will be guided to reflect on the ‘place’ of your particular discipline in society, the economy and the environment. You will consider and experiment with combining your discipline with others (multidisciplinary), blending your skills and knowledge with those of other disciplines (interdisciplinary) or even discovering new ways of working together (transdisciplinary).

The Final Research module Research methods will be embedded into the Final Research (thesis) module. Within this module, formal and dedicated ‘research weeks’ will occur in the first and second semesters. The research weeks will be distinctive points within your programme to allow you to concentrate fully on your research. The spread of its delivery is intended to provide you time to reflect, synthesise and consolidate your learning, and develop your research questions. You will also be provided six hours of supervision of your research.

Besides the immersion in the postgraduate research culture built through shared learning modules, the MA framework provides a transformative educational experience designed to shape you into a future-ready professional, equipped with the skills and expertise demanded by the industry.

LASALLE uses a 5–point Grade Point Average (GPA) system, which will be applicable to all students admitted with effect from AY2024/25, to track students’ academic progress throughout their studies. Students receive letter grades for each module taken. Each grade corresponds to a grade point as shown below:

Letter grade Grade point
A+. 5.0
A   5.0
A-  4.5
B+  4.0
B   3.5
B-  3.0
C+  2.5
C   2.0
D+  1.5
D   1.0
F   0.0

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) represents the grade point average of all modules attempted by the student. A minimum CGPA of 2.50 is required for graduation.

The computation of CGPA is as follows:

All modules, including repeat attempts, are included in the computation of the CGPA with the exception of modules that are exempted or where students were absent with valid reasons.

The classification of award and corresponding CGPA requirement are as follows:

CGPA range Classification of award
4.50 – 5.00 MA (Distinction)
2.50 – 4.49 MA

LASALLE recognises the important role of artists and designers in creating a sustainable and caring world. The curriculum provides opportunities for students to identify and explore issues around sustainability (from ecology and global climate change to the sustainability of their own creative practices and wider cultural communities) and care (for the well-being and advancement of oneself and others).

The College actively encourages students to engage with and investigate these crucial contemporary issues as part of their studies, including through their projects, and critical and creative outputs. Through interdisciplinary learning and strong engagement with these topics, the aim is to empower students to lead the way towards sustainable practices and caring communities within the cultural and creative industries.

Basic materials for learning are provided by the College.

The invention of writing has been a defining moment in the evolution of human civilization. Writing has been one of the most significant modes of communication available to us for expressing our thoughts, visions, and beliefs with each other. Across the ages of history, as writing evolved as a skill, a man started experimenting with different types of writing materials and tools, and thus developed the many styles of writing. As writing styles continue to evolve, today in the millennial world,  people seemed to be intrigued and fascinated by the new catchword – creative writing. As a result of this, many creative writing courses in Singapore are providing training to make people skilled.

List of best creative writing courses in Singapore

What is Creative Writing?

In simple words, creative writing can be explained as the art of essaying your imaginative thoughts creatively. It is how best one can craft and beautifully play with words or sentences. Some people possess the gift to write what attracts their audience’s attention, while others go through structured courses to pick up the nuances of the trait.

The ideation of any creative writing is inspired by mundane things but its value is enhanced by its presentation style which would makes it stand out. The niche of a creative writer, therefore, dwells in the individual’s ability to uniquely narrate an article as a story while keeping in mind the target audience.

Types of Creative Writing

Creative writing has been around in many forms and styles for quite some time. However, the invention of the typewriter in the late 19 th century gave a boost to the growth of creative writing. Although, in earlier times, poetry was considered one of the first forms of creative writing, however as times evolved and writers were influenced by their immediate surroundings and society, that was eventually reflected in the writing; giving rise to many other forms and styles of creative writing.

Through its journey so far, creative writing has undergone many experimentations, permutations, and combinations; often being subjected to a change in writing material or tools, or style of writing. For a considerable time in the past, people were used to the comfort of using paper as the most useful material for writing, until the internet came knocking.

Now, with the boom in the internet and technology, the art of creative writing has reached out to a new platform, with a diverse range of areas where writing skills are required to increase the target audience base to more successful careers for creative writers as akin to a decade ago.

Even though there has been an upsurge in the creative writing market due to the internet, there are still some writing styles from the past which are still in vogue. Only the look and feel have changed since we are used to reading them from an online platform rather than a copy or a book.

Let Us Understand the Types of Writing That Are Predominantly Trending in Creative Writing.

1. Poetry Writing

This has been one of the oldest forms of creative writing styles. It will not be out of place to consider this as the foundation of most of the writing styles that are in use today. Most of the writing from history discusses epics being written in rhythmic verses describing a story or anecdote of that era. It is still holding on to its fort despite stiff competition from new emerging styles of writing.

2. Fiction Writing

This style of writing mostly deals with composing imaginative narratives which may or may not have any factual bearing on the real world. In this, the writer conveys his viewpoint to the audience by creating a web of words around a pseudo-real world. This genre of writing has many varied types depending on the structure, format, or number of words such as novels, short stories, screenwriting, etc.

3. Non-fiction Writing

In contrast, non-fiction is a more generalized form of writing which includes any written content that does not have any imaginative narrative to it. They are mostly rooted in the assumption of hard facts. Often the such type of style can be written for informative or instructional benefit. Being a fact-based writing style, these can be presented either objectively or subjectively in various literary types such as educational books on various subjects, biographies, academic papers, journal articles, etc.

In the last few years, another offshoot of this style that is gaining momentum is creative non-fiction writing, which is written on the same premise of factually accurate information as non-fiction writing. But it is different in the sense that here writer projects the same information in a more dramatized way as if narrating a story to the reader.

Thus, this uses the creativity of crafting the article from fiction writing while sticking to the baseline of using hard facts as in usual non-fiction writing. Most biographies, news articles, editorial columns, magazine articles, personal essays, diary writing, memoirs, etc. come under this style of writing.

4. Screenwriting

Also known as scriptwriting, this form of writing is very similar to friction writing, especially when writing a novel. But the only addition is here the entire story is divided into different sub-structures describing more in-depth the characters, the environment, and the plot. The narratives are also in direct speech with dialogues mentioning the conversations between the different characters as well as their expressions being tagged here. Due to the detailed structure of this writing, it is mostly used in movies, theatre acts, plays, television dramas, or web series.

What will you study on the Novel Writing MA?

This course is divided into five modules taken over three terms (if studied full time) which take you through the full process of writing a novel. While exploring in depth such key techniques of fiction as plotting, narrative voice, characterisation and background research, each module is also designed to be flexible and to allow you to bring your own writing interests and projects to the assignments, extending the boundaries of your current practice through self-reflection, research, analysis, and creative exploration.

Here is a brief overview of what you will study each year

Writing as a Novelist (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module explores key writing techniques such as narrative, setting and characterisation, with reference to literary examples and the different methods used by writers in the creative process. This is an opportunity for you to explore the scenes and characters of your planned novel or develop a variety of ideas and approaches if you have not decided on the content of your story.

Reading as a Novelist (30 Credits) - Compulsory

Building on the 'Reading as a Writer' concept (most famously explored in Francine Prose's book), this module explores how published writers handle the technical and ethical problems which are likely to present themselves in your writing. Through a combination of weekly 'practical criticism' exercises and an online 'book group' you will develop the analytical skills to improve your own writing and the problem-solving techniques to overcome any obstacles in your approach.

Research: Writing, Markets, Audiences (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module explores the methods fiction-writers employ to research elements of their stories, as well as investigating the reasons why research is necessary – to provide authenticity, to avoid error, to create verisimilitude, and even to get inspiration. You will also learn about researching the possible markets, audiences and publishing outlets for your creative work.

Developing and Publishing the Novel (30 Credits) - Compulsory

This module moves on from the 'portfolio' focus of earlier modules to deal with the challenges of working on a specific novel. Through a series of writing exercises you will begin to evolve characters, explore themes and refine settings for your planned novel. This is an opportunity for you to begin the sustained prose narrative that is expected in the following dissertation.

Major Project (60 Credits) - Compulsory

Your final dissertation is an opportunity for you to take all the knowledge and skills you have acquired in the preceding modules and apply them to 20,000 words of an original novel with a synopsis for sending to an agent or publisher and an accompanying critical commentary.
