Fact: recruiters spend only 6 seconds reviewing each CV. So poorly organized CVs inevitably get discarded. 

Having an effective CV layout is the first step to attracting their attention. And the second step is topping that CV with a compelling personal statement (also known as a personal profile, personal summary, or executive summary).

What is a Personal Statement in a CV? 

A personal statement for a CV is a short and compelling paragraph that summarizes why you’re the most qualified person for the offered role. It tells the reader who you are and what valuable qualifications you will be bringing to their company.

NB : Opening statement, personal profile, personal summary, or executive summary are the other common names for a personal statement. 

Many believe that the work experience section is the most important element of a CV. Yet, it is your personal statement that can end up making or breaking the success of your job application. 

Because it provides the reader with a quick answer to one question they have on their mind: Are you qualified for the job or not? 

Remember: You’ll be directly competing with numerous other applicants with similar skills and work experiences. A compelling CV statement sets you apart by giving the reader a condensed snapshot of who you are as a person. 

Do I Need To Include a Personal Statement On My CV?

The short answer is YES! A personal statement entices the reader to read your entire CV by giving them a preview of your most valuable skills. It also helps you differentiate from other candidates by explaining your background, motivation, and personal character traits concisely. 

In essence, a personal statement helps you express why you are the right choice for the job in one condensed paragraph.

Where Should a Personal Statement Go in a CV?

A personal statement goes into the header area of your CV. Include it right under your name and contact details as a separate, highlighted area. A good personal statement is about 3-4 sentences long and occupies not more than 1/4th of the page. 

Alternatively, you can design a two-column CV and allocate the upper sidebar area for your personal statement. As a recent survey found, 77% of recruiters prefer two-column CVs to single-column ones.

Whether you’re applying for an internship or looking for a part-time job , a compelling personal is a must-have for a student CV.

How To Write A Strong Personal Statement for a CV 

An effective personal statement summarizes your skills and experience in a relevant way i.e., it indicates how you can be of help to the employer. 

In short, a compelling CV personal statement: 

  • Lists your most marketable skills and qualifications 
  • Highlights your industry knowledge and work experiences 
  • Mirrors some of the key phrases, used in the job description 

And here’s how to write a personal statement that makes a mark.

1. Review the Job Description Once Again 

As you go through the role description, pay attention to the words, used by the employer, to describe the candidate’s requirements, duties, and personality. Keep those in the back of your head. 

These are the keywords you’d want to use all around your CV — in the personal statement, work experience, education, and skills areas. 

2. Do a Mental Tally of Your Skills 

Try to remember the times in your previous work roles when you accomplished notable objectives, went above and beyond expectations , or otherwise did better than your peers.  

Note down everything that springs to mind including your years of experience in a similar role, challenges you took on and the positive results achieved, new projects you kick-started – anything that has close relevance to this new position.

3. Make a Draft Personal Statement 

Write down a sample personal statement. Don’t worry about the length – just put as many details as you’d like on paper. Once you’re done, revisit the job description. See how your personal statement compares to the description. Does it paint a picture of someone who would fit the role? 

4. Edit for Clarity and Briefity 

A good CV personal statement shouldn’t be longer than 3-4 sentences. Take a critical look at your draft version and condense it to the bare essentials: 2-3 main skills, a major accomplishment, and a note on your motivation and/or personal traits. 

Other things that don’t belong in your personal statement are:

  • Explanation of employment gaps or present unemployment status 
  • Information about hobbies or personal interest 
  • Any mention of references or recommendations 
  • Irrelevant skills or work experiences

Be clear and focused

The best personal statements are those that really go for it. Not in an off-the-wall kind of way, but by revealing something unique about you or your academic ideas or practical experiences. This is no place to hide behind waffle.

There’s a wide span of media courses, ranging from the theoretical to the practical, and your statement should focus on the specific type of course you’ve chosen to apply for.

When it comes to media studies courses , start by being clear about the kind of degree you want to study. Do you want to analyse media, produce content, or a combination of both? Whichever it is, demonstrate that you’re focused about this. Outline why you want to study the course, and the knowledge, ideas, or practical experiences you will bring to it.Similarly, journalism personal statements need to set out why you want to study it, and how your knowledge and experience supports this – particularly in the case of professionally accredited journalism degrees . A vague, unsubstantiated ambition to be a journalist will not suffice.

Practical journalism courses

If you’re applying for practical journalism courses , competition for places could be fierce. Here’s a selection of tips, courtesy of Bournemouth University, the University of Sheffield, and De Montfort University:

  • State clearly why you want to study journalism, and explain that you know something about the work of the central figure in journalism – the reporter.
  • Demonstrate creative writing ability, a good presentational style, accurate spelling, correct grammar, and a sound grasp of the English language.
  • Read quality broadsheet newspapers and follow major developing news stories. Show you're aware of current affairs.
  • Maybe explain what you noticed about how the reporting of a topical event differed depending on which publication you were reading, and the impact this may have had on shaping public perception.
  • Show you understand the power the media has, and the importance of reporting facts clearly and concisely.
  • Show that you can express your own opinions and thoughts, and know how to tell stories to different audiences.
  • Demonstrate your interpersonal skills, persistence, and an ability to dig deep into a wide range of topics.

Work experience in your personal statement

For practical journalism courses, some (though not all) unis will insist on work experience.

  • If you can, try to gain some work experience within a media environment , ideally in a newsroom of a local newspaper office. Free newspapers, local or hospital radio, or a TV newsroom could also give you insights into the reporter's job.
  • What did you learn? What skills did you observe as being particularly important? How has the experience impacted on your motivation to further your studies in journalism? See our guide for how to make work experience count in your personal statement .
  • Alternatively, are there any other settings where you've written for an audience, such as your own blog or your school newspaper? If so, what have you learned from this about working towards strict deadlines, or how writing pieces for an intended audience can alter the language and style you use?

If you’ve already had journalistic work published or broadcast, produced a blog, vlog, or podcast yourself, had a great reference from some relevant work experience; or anything else that may be relevant, consider sending them a link or clip separately.

How to save your CV as a PDF document:

  • Click on File > Save As > Select “PDF” from the drop-down menu.
  • Make your CV visually appealing: For most applicants, their CVs should contain little design and colour. However, as you are applying for a job in the arts and design industry, you are allowed to be more creative with your CV. Try to showcase your design skills by producing a CV that looks both visually appealing and professional at the same time.
  • Adopt a standard CV structure: A conventional CV contains the following sections: personal details, personal profile, achievements, employment, education, qualifications, skills, hobbies and references. You should try to stick to this format as much as possible because it won’t catch employers off guard and make it difficult more difficult for them to find your important information.
  • Stick to two pages: As a general rule of thumb, the shorter the CV the better. Surveys have shown that employers only tend to spend around 30 seconds reading each CV so any CV that is long-winded or unfocused will automatically be rejected. Remember, the purpose of your CV is not to get you a job but a job interview ! Once you have secured a job interview, you can then share much more information about yourself with the employer.
  • Make correct use of white space: In your role as a multimedia designer, you will be designing visually appealing ads, banners, videos and animations. You are expected to know how to use white space (the area between design elements) to aid and improve the legibility and scannability of your document.
  • Use short sentences: Big, chunky paragraphs are boring and difficult to read so opt for short paragraphs, short sentences, bullet points and short subheadings to improve the impact of your CV.

The next part of your CV contains a short introduction to your CV known as a personal profile statement or CV summary .

It outlines, in brief, your personal characteristics, strengths, abilities and experience.

Employers use your personal statement to identify your suitability for the role.

You should write a specific personal profile for each different job you are applying for.

Guidelines:

  • Keep it punchy and to the point (no more than four to five sentences)
  • Use real-life examples, facts and figures
  • Use active voice such as “planned”, “implemented”, “managed”, etc.

The employment section contains details of any jobs you have had in your career to date, including full-time, part-time, voluntary, unpaid and work experience jobs.

Employers highly value relevant work experience so make sure you present this important information in such a way that it is easy to read and comprehend.

For each entry, write down the following information:

  • Start and end dates (if you’re still doing the job, just write “present” instead of the end date)
  • Your job title
  • The employer’s name
  • Your key duties and achievements

Tip: If you have a lot of relevant work experience, you can omit old or unrelated jobs from this section such as a part-time job you had in an unrelated field a long time ago.

The skills section is your opportunity to showcase the key skills that will help you in doing the job you are applying for.

For example, the ability to draw or animate is an essential requirement for a multimedia professional, so you should include this skill on your CV to demonstrate that you have what it takes to do your job well.

Tip: Don’t just write “design skills” because that doesn’t mean much! Instead, write something along the lines of, “Strong design skills, demonstrated in my ability to use InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop to create stunning graphics.”

That sounds much more convincing, right?

Useful skills to add to your Multimedia CV

  • The ability to use specialist audio, video and graphic editing/production software tools such as Adobe Premier, Photoshop, AfterEffects and Illustrator.
  • A good eye for design, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong creative design skills and a creative flair.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills – to liaise with other professionals and clients.
  • Strong organisational, time and project management skills.
  • A passion for information technology, product design and programming.
  • The ability to manage own workload and work towards agreed deadlines.
  • Excellent understanding of print processes.
  • Good knowledge of the latest trends in the design and technology industries.

Hobbies and interests (optional)

The hobbies section of your CV is optional, you may leave it out if you want.

However, it’s recommended to include this section on your CV if you have relevant hobbies and interests that could add value to your application.

For example, stating that you “enjoy creating graphics for my personal technology blog” demonstrates to the employer that you have a keen interest in design and technology, an essential requirement for any media professional!

You can include your hobbies such as shooting, editing and uploading videos onto YouTube.

Finally, you need to give details of your references .

Your references are people who can vouch for your personal characteristics, skills and abilities to the employer.

Your references could be many people such as your current or former employer, manager, teacher, etc. Basically, anyone who knows you well from past interactions.

They can’t be, however, a family member or friend.

Note: You may also write, “References are available upon request” if you do not have enough space for your references on your CV or do not wish to disclose them at this stage.

Tips to make your CV more effective

  • Proofread your CV: You should always proofread your CV for spelling and grammar mistakes, especially when applying for a role such as this one in which you will be responsible for creating important banners, ads, posters, web posts, videos and animations. If your CV contains mistakes, employers will assume that the work you will produce for them will also most likely contain mistakes! Print out your CV, read it out loud and see if you can spot any mistakes. Ideally, you should ask a family member, friend or colleague to proofread it too.
  • Write a tailored CV for each job: You should send a tailored CV for each job that you are applying for because the requirements, needs and expectations of each job or employer are slightly different. The closer match your CV is to the job specification, the better your chances of being invited for a job interview!
  • Include a cover letter with your application: A cover letter is a great way to impress the employer and stand out from the other applicants as only 1 in 4 applicants send a cover letter with their job application. Your cover letter will be an excellent opportunity to give context to your application, further explain your suitability for the job and encourage the employer to invite you for a face-to-face job interview.

A personal statement is a narrative essay that connects your background, experiences, and goals to the mission, requirements, and desired outcomes of the specific opportunity you are seeking. It is a critical component in the selection process, whether the essay is for a competitive internship, a graduate fellowship, or admittance to a graduate school program. It gives the selection committee the best opportunity to get to know you, how you think and make decisions, ways in which past experiences have been significant or formative, and how you envision your future. Personal statements can be varied in form; some are given a specific prompt, while others are less structured. However, in general a personal statement should answer the following questions:

  • Who are you?
  • What are your goals?
  • How does this specific program/opportunity help you achieve your goals?
  • What is in the future?

A personal statement is not:

  • A variation of your college admissions essay
  • An academic/research paper
  • A narrative version of your resume
  • A creative writing piece (it can be creative, though)
  • An essay about somebody else

Keep in mind that your statement is only a portion of the application and should be written with this in mind. Your entire application package will include some, possibly all, of the materials listed below. You will want to consider what these pieces of the application communicate about you. Your personal statement should aim to tie everything together and fill in or address any gaps. There will likely be some overlap but be sure not to be too repetitive.

If you are writing your first personal statement or working to improve upon an existing personal statement, the video below is a helpful, in-depth resource.

A large portion of your work towards completing a personal statement begins well before your first draft or even an outline. It is incredibly important to be sure you understand all of the rules and regulations around the statement. Things to consider before you begin writing:

  • How many prompts? And what are they? It is important to know the basics so you can get your ideas in order. Some programs will require a general statement of interest and a focused supplementary or secondary statement closely aligned with the institution's goals.
  • Are there formatting guidelines? Single or double spaced, margins, fonts, text sizes, etc. Our general guideline is to keep it simple.
  • How do I submit my statement(s)? If uploading a document we highly suggest using a PDF as it will minimize the chances of accidental changes to formatting. Some programs may event ask you to copy and paste into a text box.
  • When do I have to submit my statement(s)? Most are due at the time of application but some programs, especially medical schools, will ask for secondary statements a few months after you apply. In these instances be sure to complete them within two weeks, any longer is an indication that you aren't that interested in the institution.

Before you start writing, take some time to reflect on your experiences and motivations as they relate to the programs to which you are applying. This will offer you a chance to organize your thoughts which will make the writing process much easier. Below are a list of questions to help you get started:

  • What individuals, experiences or events have shaped your interest in this particular field?
  • What has influenced your decision to apply to graduate school?
  • How does this field align with your interests, strengths, and values?
  • What distinguishes you from other applicants?
  • What would you bring to this program/profession?
  • What has prepared you for graduate study in this field? Consider your classes at Wellesley, research and work experience, including internships, summer jobs and volunteer work.
  • Why are you interested in this particular institution or degree program?
  • How is this program distinct from others?
  • What do you hope to gain?
  • What is motivating you to seek an advanced degree now?
  • Where do you see yourself headed and how will this degree program help you get there?

For those applying to Medical School, if you need a committee letter for your application and are using the Medical Professions Advisory Committee you have already done a lot of heavy lifting through the 2017-2018 Applicant Information Form . Even if you aren't using MPAC the applicant information form is a great place to start.

Another great place to start is through talking out your ideas. You have a number of options both on and off campus, such as: Career Education advisors and mentors ( you can set up an appointment here ), major advisor, family, friends. If you are applying to a graduate program it is especially important to talk with a faculty member in the field. Remember to take good notes so you can refer to them later.

When you begin writing keep in mind that your essay is one of many in the application pool. This is not to say you should exaggerate your experiences to “stand out” but that you should focus on clear, concise writing. Also keep in mind that the readers are considering you not just as a potential student but a future colleague. Be sure to show them examples and experiences which demonstrate you are ready to begin their program.

It is important to remember that your personal statement will take time and energy to complete, so plan accordingly. Every application and statement should be seen as different from one another, even if they are all the same type of program. Each institution may teach you the same material but their delivery or focus will be slightly different.

The prompts below are from actual applications to a several types of programs. As you will notice many of them are VERY general in nature. This is why it is so important to do your research and reflect on your motivations. Although the prompts are similar in nature the resulting statements would be very different depending on the discipline and type of program, as well as your particular background and reasons for wanting to pursue this graduate degree.

  • This statement should illustrate your academic background and experiences and explain why you would excel in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (UMass Amherst - M.S. in Civil Engineering).
  • Describe your academic and career objectives and how the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies can help you achieve them. Include other considerations that explain why you seek admissions to the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and your interests in the environmental field (Yale - Master of Environmental Management).

  • Personal history and diversity statement, in which you describe how your personal background informs your decision to pursue a graduate degree.   • A Personal Statement specifying your past experiences, reasons for applying, and your areas of interest. It should explain your intellectual and personal goals, why you are interested in pursuing an interdisciplinary degree rather than a more traditional disciplinary one, and how this degree fits into your intellectual and personal future (Rutgers University - Ph.D in Women’s and Gender Studies).
  • Your application requires a written statement to uploaded into your application and is a critical component of your application for admission. This is your opportunity to tell us what excites you about the field of library and information science, and what problems you want to help solve in this field. Please also tell us how your prior experiences have prepared you for this next step toward your career goals and how this program will help you achieve them (University of North Carolina Chapel Hill - Master of Science in Library Science).

  • Personal Statement: In 500 words or less, describe a meaningful educational experience that affected your professional goals and growth and explain how it impacted you.   • Personal Statement (500 word minimum): State your reasons for seeking admission to this program at this institution.   • “Use the space provided to explain why you want to go to this type of program.” (AMCAS)
  • Address the following three questions(Though there is no set limit, most statements are 1–2 pages, single-spaced.): What are your reasons for pursuing this degree? Right Winger Outrage Over Kamala Harris’ College Resume Brutally Mocked

A conservative news website is getting thoroughly mocked on social media for attempting to gin up some controversy about Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Washington Free Beacon did a deep dive into Harris’ past work at McDonald’s that was breathlessly headlined, “‘I Did Fries’: Kamala Harris Claims She Worked at McDonald’s, but She Never Mentioned It Until She Ran for President. Did She Really Toil Beneath the Golden Arches?”

The Democratic presidential nominee has previously mentioned that she worked at McDonald’s after her freshman year in college to earn extra money.

She discussed the experience in an interview earlier this year with Drew Barrymore, saying, “I did fries, and then I did the [cash register].”

Former President Bill Clinton mentioned Harris’ McDonald’s job during his speech at the Democratic National Convention, joking, “I will be so happy when she actually enters the White House as president, because she will break my record as the president who spent the most time at McDonald’s.”

Harris formerly working at a fast food restaurant may make her relatable to Americans, so apparently, the Beacon wanted to ensure she was on the up-and-up. The article noted that Harris didn’t mention the Mickey D’s gig until a labor rally in June 2019, and it wasn’t mentioned in either of her memoirs.

However, what likely aroused suspicion for the Beacon reporters is that she left her job at Mickey D’s off her October 1987 job application for a law clerk position in the Alameda County district attorney’s office.

The Beacon notes that Harris did list several jobs in a section that asked for every position she had held in the last 10 years, but not McDonald’s.

Snopes was also unable to verify Harris’ employment at McDonald’s. HuffPost also reached out to McDonald’s, which didn’t immediately respond.

A Harris campaign official said on background that the vice president worked at McDonald’s during the summer of 1983 in Alameda, California, where she handled register duties and manned the fry and ice cream machines.

But after Free Beacon editor Peter J. Hasson promoted the story on social media, many people expressed that the publication was grasping at straws to make Harris look bad.

And, yes, there was mockery. And snark. Lots of snark, because, as many people noted, people applying for professional careers usually don’t list their high school or summer jobs in their applications.

Trump lashes out as DNC attacks throw him off message

Donald Trump isn't in Chicago but his presence hangs over everything and he is clearly following events here.

Ahead of Kamala Harris's speech on Thursday, a couple of Trump aides told me, a little implausibly, that the former president is not tuning into the Democratic National Convention because he has no interest in watching a Democratic Party "infomercial".

But one senior campaign official confirms, anonymously, that Trump is watching and is irritated by the attacks against him.

In the view of one ally who speaks to the former president every week, Trump wins in November if he sticks to talking about the economy, the border and crime.

At the start of this week, that looked possible. Trump scheduled a string of rallies, in Pennsylvania, Michigan, North Carolina and Arizona - each was themed to focus on exactly those political and economic topics.

But with night after night of anti-Trump speeches here in Chicago, staying on message has gone out the window. And it's not what his supporters tell him they want anyway.

The North Carolina event on Wednesday was vintage Trump - and it became a referendum on his own team's strategy. "They always say, 'Sir, please stick to policy, don't get personal'... and yet [the Democrats are] getting personal all night long, these people. Do I still have to stick to policy?" Trump asked.

Then he polled the crowd: more policy or go personal? His fans roared, they wanted the Trump show, not a list of boring economic proposals. "My advisers are fired!" he joked. Then he said he'd stick to policy but couldn't let the attacks go unanswered.

So the campaign strategy now seems to be at the whim of the candidate and the feedback of his crowds. That makes life difficult for his campaign advisers who repeatedly tell me their single biggest concern in this election campaign is whether they can keep Trump focused on issues and off the controversial personal attacks.

There have been a couple of those this week already.

Late on Wednesday night, Trump took to social media to criticise the Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who had given a rousing speech earlier in the evening. Trump clearly didn’t like what he heard.

"The highly overrated Jewish Governor of the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, made a really bad and poorly delivered speech," Trump wrote.

"I have done more for Israel than any President
Shapiro has done nothing for Israel, and never will."

The fact that he singled out Mr Shapiro as Jewish has not gone unnoticed. It was picked up on the US morning shows as an example of a racial dog whistle.

After the Obamas criticised Trump at the DNC on Tuesday night, he responded during his rally in North Carolina, and, again, there was a similar racial innuendo.

"Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night," Trump said. "He was taking shots at your president. And so was Michelle."

It's true that they did take pretty personal shots at him, but the use of Mr Obama's middle name has long been used to stoke racial animosity towards him.

The problem for the Trump team is that their candidate thrives on controversy which then dominates headlines, and this distracts from their attempts to point out weaknesses in his opponent's policy positions.

"It doesn't matter what he talks about for 45 minutes," one adviser told me on the condition of anonymity. "One comment or answer to a question gives the left all they need to change the subject."

Action taken against Labour Party for failing to respond to requests for personal information on time

We have issued a reprimand to the Labour Party for repeatedly failing to respond to people who asked what personal information the party held on them – known as a subject access request (SAR).

In November 2022, the Labour Party had received 352 SARs that required a response. Of that number, 78% had not received a response within the maximum compulsory time limit of three months, and over half (56%) were significantly delayed by over one year.

The backlog of SARs developed following a cyber-attack on the Labour Party in October 2021, which led to an increase in requests from the public.

The investigation followed over 150 complaints to us regarding the Labour Party’s handling of SARs in the year from November 2021 to November 2022.

Under data protection law, people have the right to ask an organisation if it is using or storing their personal information and receive a copy of any personal information held. They also have the right to ask an organisation to ensure that their personal information is up-to-date and accurate, or in certain cases, deleted .

During its investigation, we were also informed of the existence of a ‘privacy inbox’ that had not been monitored by the Labour Party since November 2021. The inbox contained approximately 646 additional SARs and approximately 597 requests for personal information to be deleted. While some of these may have been duplications, none of the requests had been responded to by the Labour Party.

Since engagement with the ICO began, the Labour Party has continued to take steps to address its backlog, including assigning three temporary members of staff to solely tackle the outstanding requests, allocating extra funds and implementing an action plan.

“Being able to ask an organisation 'what information do you hold on me?' and 'how it is being used?' is a fundamental right, which provides both transparency and accountability. It is vital that organisations do not underestimate the importance of responding to these requests on time.

“The public need to fully trust that a political party will handle their data correctly and respect their information rights. We welcome news that the Labour Party has now cleared its backlog of SARs and implemented further measures to ensure people receive a prompt response going forward.”

The reprimand details how the Labour Party failed to comply with their legal obligations under data protection law when responding to SARs during this period. We have advised the Labour Party to take the steps outlined in its action plan to make sure they continue to have adequate staffing in place to respond to SARs on time and ensure future compliance with the law.

Organisations must respond to a SAR within one month of receipt of the request. This can be extended by up to two months if the SAR is complex.

  • The Labour Party made the ICO aware of the cyber attack that impacted the party in October 2021. Following an investigation, the case was closed with no enforcement action taken.
  • The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent regulator for data protection and information rights law, upholding information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.
  • The ICO has specific responsibilities  set out in the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA2018), the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (EIR), Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR) and a further five acts and regulations.
  • The ICO can take action to address and change the behaviour of organisations and individuals that collect, use and keep personal information. This includes criminal prosecution, non-criminal enforcement and audit.
