“For the last few years I lived here, I was the same height as I am now, so why am I astonished at the low hang of countertops, or that I can catch my reflection in the mirror that hangs high on the wall? Sometimes peering at that tired, but devilishly handsome, man in the mirror evokes the same, bittersweet feeling of vertigo you get from visiting your old primary school, as you stand 3ft higher than you’re supposed to, like some befuddled Lemuel Gulliver.”

In his essay , O’Reilly reflects on his time visiting his father in his childhood house. He recalls his memories inside the house alongside his son’s experiences today and how they are similar. He also explains how pleasant it is to be in the house again, as it evokes warm, cozy memories of his upbringing. While much has changed about the house, every visit remains as nostalgic as ever.

You might also find these essays about camping trips helpful.

“I always smile when I remember fishing with my Father. Many years have now since passed since those Saturday morning fishing trips. Time has taught me that the bond between Father and Son is what made those memories special to me. Now when I close my eyes I can remember those days since passed with joy and with a remembrance of the love I have for my Father.”

In this short essay , Dziegielewski describes memories of fishing with his father. He recalls every detail, from the fresh smell of the lake to the sound of a fishing bobber. Most importantly, however, he remembers how his father taught him the skill of fishing. This made him love his father, even more, allowing him to look back on these memories fondly.  You can also check out these essays about development .

“Water also drives many of our decisions — from the seafood we eat to our most romantic moments, and from where we live, to the sports we enjoy, and the ways we vacation and relax. We know instinctively that being by water makes us healthier, happier, reduces stress, and brings us peace.”

Bajaj recalls a memorable experience in which she dove into a deep pool after her mother had told her not to. She remembers the feelings of curiosity and excitement she felt and how despite her nearly drowning, she remembers that time happily. Reflecting on the memory, she also explains how water has helped her become more satisfied, peaceful, and happy. Our childhood memories shape us and provide us with the basis for the rest of our lives.

4.   I Would Have Liked Childhood More Without the Pressure to Grow Up by Jane Coaston

“I felt like I was given no time for trial and error. My choices were either to make the very selective local club soccer team or never play the sport again, be a genius or give up. Because being bad at anything was the worst possible sin I could imagine committing.”

Coaston writes about a more negative aspect of her childhood: the constant pressure to “not be a kid anymore.” She recalls several things expected of her, including having exceptional grades while being athletically gifted at the same time, with “no time for trial and error.” She feels everything was expected of her, and she did not have time to discover herself by making mistakes. She wishes parents would not rush their children along and let kids be kids for a while.  Check out these essays about growing up .

“I remember calling home once when I was spending the night at a friend’s house. I was homesick and just wanted to come back home. It was near midnight, but my mom drove over and picked me up. It was in these little moments that I especially felt loved. These were moments when I really needed my mom, and she was there for me. As a mother of a one-year-old now, I treasure these moments too.”

In her essay , Castleberry recalls her childhood memories involving her mother, including ones in which her mother entertained her and her friends and picked her up from a late night at a friend’s house. She remembers the small things her mother would do for her and how she was always there when she needed her. In raising her daughter, Castleberry strives to be the same mother that her mother was for her.

Narrative Essay on Childhood Memories

Narrative essay generator.

Childhood memories are the treasures of our past, vividly painting the innocence, adventures, and joy of our early years. These memories, both sweet and bittersweet, form the mosaic of our identity, influencing who we become. This essay delves into the essence of childhood memories, exploring their impact and significance through a personal journey back in time.

The Magic of Childhood

Childhood: a period of life where every day feels like a new adventure, filled with curiosity and wonder. My childhood was no different. It was a time when the smallest things felt like grand discoveries, from finding a caterpillar in the backyard to the first time I rode a bike without training wheels. These moments, though seemingly small, are monumental in the eyes of a child. They represent growth, learning, and the boundless joy of living.

A Journey Back in Time

One of my most cherished memories takes me back to my grandmother’s house, a quaint cottage nestled in the heart of the countryside. It was a place out of a storybook, surrounded by lush gardens and towering trees that whispered secrets with the wind. My summers there were filled with endless days of exploration, from the crack of dawn until the stars claimed the sky.

The Garden Adventures

The garden was a magical realm where imagination had no bounds. My cousins and I would embark on epic adventures, pretending to be explorers in a mystical land. We built forts out of branches and leaves, declaring them castles of ancient times. The garden was our kingdom, and in it, we were invincible. The laughter and shouts of our play still echo in my mind, a reminder of the carefree joy of youth.

Lessons Learned

Amidst the fun and games, childhood also presented its set of challenges and lessons. I recall a particular rainy day when our garden escapades led to a muddy disaster. Our clothes were stained, and the indoors became a canvas for our muddy footprints. The scolding that followed taught us the importance of responsibility and the consequences of our actions. Yet, even in that moment of admonition, there was love and the gentle guidance towards making better choices.

The Power of Friendship

Childhood is also a time when friendships are formed, bonds that often last a lifetime. I met my best friend under the most unusual circumstances, a mishap during a school play where a missed cue turned into a comedy of errors. Instead of embarrassment, we found laughter and a friendship that stood the test of time. It was through these friendships that I learned the value of trust, support, and the sheer joy of having someone to share life’s moments with.

As the years passed, the innocence of childhood gradually gave way to the responsibilities of adulthood. The endless days of play were replaced by schedules and commitments. Yet, the memories of those carefree days remain, a beacon of light guiding me through life’s challenges. They remind me to find joy in the simple things, to approach life with curiosity, and to cherish the bonds formed in the innocence of childhood.

Childhood memories are more than just moments of the past; they are the foundation upon which we build our future. They teach us lessons, shape our values, and influence our paths. As I reflect on my journey through childhood, I am grateful for the experiences that shaped me, the challenges that strengthened me, and the joy that filled my days. These memories are a precious gift, a reminder of a time of innocence and wonder that continues to inspire and guide me as I navigate the complexities of adulthood.

My Favorite Food and Childhood Memories

My favorite food since I have been very young is a hamburger topped with cheese, cooked medium rare. An obvious reason for why this would be my favorite food is the fact that a cheeseburger is the single best tasting food that has ever been prepared. There are, however, many other explanations for my choice, which are rooted in sociological factors related to the environment in which I raised. These factors have no doubt crept themselves into the subconscious of […]

Riley’s life in San Francisco is very different. The story is told from the perspective of Riley’s emotions that are each portrayed as different characters. Riley’s emotions or “characters” in the movie all have their own purpose. Joy is the leader. Her main concern is to keep Riley […]

Childhood Sexual Abuse – Preceding Hypersexualized Behavior

Hypersexual behavior is differentiated from paraphilia, or sexually deviant behavior, based on the criteria that hypersexual behaviors still fall within socially normal sexual activities (Kafka, 2010). Paraphilia refers to activities that do not fall within reasonably expected behavior, such as sexual interest in children or non-living entities (DSM-V, 2013). Both are defined as intense and frequent sexual behaviors that bring distress or other unintended negative consequences. This report looks at childhood sexual abuse, commonly referred to as CSA, in terms […]

Holden Caulfield’s Childhood Memories

“All Changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another”(Anatole France). It’s okay to feel scared to face a new time or change in your life but sometimes we have to make a change to move on, even if it frights you. In the book called “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger. The protagonist of this […]

Traumatic Childhood Memories

Most people are well aware of the concept of repression before ever stepping foot into a psychology class. The notion that a memory can be recalled after years of ignorance is a commonplace assumption, bringing with it the further assumption that it is a well-proven theory with the backing of researchers of psychology. Upon closer scrutiny, both the definition of and support for repression are seen as they truly are—complicated and controversial. The theory of repression originated with Jean-Martin Charcot […]

All about the Late Great Aretha

Aretha’s net worth is an astonishing 80 million dollars. Did you also know that one her childhood friends was Smokey Robinson, and that in 1960 Aretha signed with Columbia Records. Now that you know a little bit about the Queen of Soul, lets learn more about her life. Aretha […]

Childhood Memories Influence on our Adult Lives

History In counseling I believe the psychodynamic approach is very important, which is why I chose to write about it in this essay. Psychodynamic approach states that events in our childhood have a great influence on our adult lives, shaping our personality. Psychodynamic approach started off in 1895 when Sigmund Freud and his advisor wrote a book called “Studies on Hysteria.” “In the book they explained their theory: Every hysteria is a result of a traumatic experience, one that cannot […]

Childhood Memories about Garage Sales

Everything Must Go The words seemed to stare down at me; block letters written in Sharpie and filled with a sense of melancholy and urgency. After years of going to garage sales, I had become accustomed to seeing this sign all around the neighborhood, yet somehow I was always intrigued by the possibility of finding a new treasure among piles of sundry items. Throughout my childhood, garage sales had always been part of my family's weekend routine. Saturday mornings were […]

Childhood Amnesia

It is evident in humans around the world to lack the ability to recall childhood events such as the places they were and what emotions they felt. The first and most famous explanation comes by Sigmund Freud in 1953, who first offered an explanation to this phenomenon and introduced the term of Childhood Amnesia. In 1910, Freud referred to this phenomenon as the inability to recall episodic memories from the first two years of life and he credited repression of […]

My Childhood Memories about Learning English Language

I sat outside of my grandparents’ house with my cousin. As we looked upon the night sky, a tiny object which resembled a speck of light flew among the stars, and she told me that I would be riding in one of those one day. I experienced my first airplane flight at the age of three, only this wasn’t a typical vacation where my family and I would return home after a few weeks, nor was it an ordinary move. […]

Personal Narrative: my Childhood

I grew up in an Indian culture that has a high-power distance. Power distance refers to a way in which power is distributed and people’s attitude towards the differences. This meant that I grew up in a culture that truly believed that valued power in society. Individuals with the most power were the ones who were able to have the highest amount of control and thereby the most respect in society. These individuals often hold high positions in society. One […]

My Plans for Christmas were Ruined

One time each year, enchantment and spark take flight. Each home fills with joy as little children are nestled in their beds. Parents tiredly make their way to bed as the last present is wrapped tight with red thread. The house is all decorated with wreaths and the stockings are hung on the mantle beneath. Candle lights twinkle and glow as the glorious pine tree glimmers with pride. The clock chimes and finally Christmas arrives. Beneath the tree lays an […]

Annotated Bibliography: False Memory and Children

The study was trying to examine whether children with high callous-unemotional (CU) traits and children with low CU traits had different emotional memory. The high CU group was hypothesized to have fewer false memory on negative word lists than the low CU group; and bow groups should perform the same on neutral word lists. 46 elementary school children were recruited based on the responses on the CU subscale of the Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD) completed by their parents. Then, […]

Echoes of Home: the Deep Resonance of “The House that Built Me”

In the tapestry of life, certain threads run deeper than others. For many, the idea of home, particularly the house where they grew up, is one such thread. There is an ineffable quality about our childhood homes, an almost sacred aura that remains long after we've moved on. The phrase "The House That Built Me" captures this sentiment exquisitely, suggesting not merely a physical structure, but a vessel of memories, experiences, and lessons that have, in many ways, constructed our […]

Home Sweet Home: a Study on International Students’ Experience

Our ancestors put a lot into the concept of a house. Even the Old Testament ark saved Noah from the flood, becoming a symbol of the life of a new, better civilization. Turning to countless riddles, proverbs, conspiracies, we see that the house symbolized both the real and the spiritual world. From time immemorial, he was a talisman for a person from evil. Even all the components of the house had their own special, not only everyday, but also spiritual […]

Childhood Memories Essay

  • 100 Words Essay On Childhood Memories

One of the most important things we can treasure throughout our life is our memories. They mould our personalities since they contain all of our information and experiences from the past. We all have memories, both positive and negative. Memories are the small things that make life flow more smoothly. They shape our personalities since they include all of our information and life experiences. The most wonderful and magnificent time of our lives is when we are children. It is that time in our lives when we were without sorrows and concerns. Our adult lives are greatly influenced by the recollections of our youth. They influence our future and way of thinking about the world.

Childhood Memories Essay

Any person's heart has a special space for childhood memories. Childhood is the earliest stage of life, and what a child learns and observes from his or her family, teachers, and classmates will determine what that child learns in the future. Therefore, a child's future and memorable childhood are both the responsibility of parents and other family members.

As one gets older, they become more and more sentimental about their childhood, which is the best time in their lives. People often feel happy when they think back on their youth because it was the most carefree and enjoyable time of their lives.

When I was a kid, I loved spending time with my family. One of my favourite childhood memories is going to the park with my mom and dad.We would go on the swings, play in the sandbox, and go down the slide. It was always so much fun. Another great memory is going camping with my family. We would hike through the woods, roast marshmallows over the campfire, and tell stories around the fire. I loved spending time outdoors and exploring nature. I have so many great childhood memories, and I cherish them all. Spending time with my family was always the best part of my day. I'm so grateful for those memories and they will always be close to my heart.

When we reconnect with our childhood friends, our inner child is always present. No matter how mature we consider ourselves to be, the instant we are with old friends, we revert to being children. When we reunite with old friends after a long absence, memories also drive our conversations. The trip down memory lane is bittersweet because we miss a time that is gone but yet treasure its happiness. Some people might act like children when they see sweets, while others might become enthusiastic when they see swings. Similarly, visiting places that you used to frequent as a child brings back many emotions and memories associated with the place.

Importance of Childhood Memory

Our adult lives are profoundly impacted by our childhood recollections. The happiest moments in our lives come to mind. Our future and mentality are built on the experiences of our childhood. Happy people tend to have fond memories of their childhood. A person's future can also be impacted by unpleasant childhood experiences.

Childhood lessons serve as valuable life lessons and memories for the rest of one's life. It is relevant to issues like family and societal values, morals, understanding the significance of friendships, and treating adults with respect.

Childhood experiences have a profound impact on the development of virtues like self-control and a positive outlook on life. These principles, which are crucial for success in adulthood, cannot be picked up quickly. They must be learned over time.

Although they don't define a person, childhood memories can be very important in one's life. It is not certain that a person with pleasant memories always lives a happy life and a person with sad memories always lives a chaotic life. Difficult childhood experiences might occasionally make a person stronger, empathetic and resilient.

It may be argued that childhood memories keep our inner child alive. Every person always has a child inside of them. At any point in life, it may just appear out of nowhere. It can also be shown in the tiny things we like doing on a daily basis.

My Favourite Childhood Memory

Childhood memories are always fun to recall after a tiring day at work. My fondest memories are all of my friends running together, friends creating mischief together, and playing cricket in the gullies. Summer holidays used to be just as fun and exciting. My friends and I would play football matches where we would imagine ourselves as our favourite football player. The losing team had to buy the winning team chocolates from the neighbourhood shop—we all would share and have a great laugh over it. When not playing football, we would play hide and seek in the gullies. Everyone would tactically hide and control their laughter lest someone finds them and screams ‘Gotcha’. After all the time spent playing outside, we would have to go back home to complete our holiday homework. My mom used to make my favourite meal during the holidays. It was always a pain to imagine the end of summer holidays and going back to school. Childhood was indeed a memorable journey that we still recall after a tiring day.

💡 Coming Up with Childhood Memories Essay Ideas

Perhaps you got lost in your memories and cannot choose the best one to describe in your essay. Or maybe you have a bad memory and cannot recollect something specific to write about. If that’s the case, here are some recommendations for you.

Childhood Memories List: How to Write

Don’t know where to start? Try creating a list of your memories to decide which ones you need for your paper.

The picture shows examples of what to include in a childhood memories essay.

There are our top tips on making a childhood memories list:

  • Write down everything that comes to your mind. What are some significant memories from your childhood? Every little experience starting with your earliest memory matters. Of course, you don’t need all of this information for your essay. Still, it will help your brain to start working in the right direction.
  • Try to focus on specific things such as holidays, trips, or food. Everybody’s favorite childhood memories are often connected with them. Remarkable events also might include school, neighborhood, hometown, presents you received, and your achievements. Nostalgia is your best friend in this case.
  • Divide your memories into categories. Good childhood experiences such as receiving a dream present or adopting a pet belong to one category. Life-changing events, key achievements, and unfortunate accidents can go into other categories.
  • Try not to avoid bad childhood memories. It’s not the most pleasant thing in this task. But sometimes, writing about bad situations or challenges is a good strategic decision for your paper. It can also help your personal growth.

How to Remember Childhood Memories

What is your earliest memory? A frightening fall down the stairs? Or perhaps blowing candles on your second birthday? Whatever the content, it is probably short and vague.

When we grow older, our recollections of early childhood become fragmentary . In fact, a profound memory loss occurs, which psychologists call infantile amnesia (you can learn more about it from the article “ New perspectives on childhood memory ”). Memories formed during early childhood are more fragile than those formed later in life.

That’s why it’s a great idea to write down our childhood recollections. This way, they’ll stay with us even after they lose their rich vividness and start to fade altogether.

Essay on Childhood Memories

Memories are one of the most crucial things we can cherish throughout our lives. They build up our personality as all our knowledge and previous experiences are stored there. Memories can be both good and bad. There are memories either from long ago or from the recent past. In our critical times, we may get some refreshment by recalling our memories. We can run our lives smoothly with the help of these memories. Memories help us in many ways. We can rectify ourselves from past mistakes. Childhood memories are treasured by all of us. They make us smile even in our old age.

Importance of Childhood Memory:

Childhood memories are very significant in our lives. We can recall the best times of our lives. Childhood memories build up our future and way of thinking. People with good childhood memories are happy people. On the other hand some bad childhood memories also affect the future of an individual.

The things a person learns during childhood remain as important lessons and memories for life. It applies to things like family and society values, morals, learning the importance of friendships and being respectful to adults. Without learning proper manners, people can become reckless and take unnecessary risks in life.

Childhood memories are also strongly related to good habits such as proper discipline and cultivating the proper attitude in life. These values, which are very important for success in adult life, cannot be learnt overnight at a later stage.

A childhood memory definitely does not define anyone but they play a pivotal role in one’s life. It is not necessary that a person with good memories always lives a prosperous life while a person with bad memories always lives a hazardous life. Sometimes, ghastly childhood memories make a man stronger.

Nevertheless, it can be said that the inner child is kept alive by childhood memories. There is always a child inside every person. It may come out all of a sudden at any stage in life. It may also be expressed every day in the little things that we enjoy doing.

Our inner child is especially seen when we meet our  childhood friends. Regardless of how grown up we think we are, we go back to kids the moment we are with old friends. Memories also take up the bulk of our conversation when we meet old friends after many years. The trip down memory lane is bittersweet as we long for a time we will not get back but also cherish its joy.

Some may be excited about seeing swings, some may act like a child when they see panipuri. The reason behind the facts is we are reminded by our childhood memories every time. The same happens when we enter the children’s play park and are reminded of our favourite rides. It is even more so when we ate ice cream or our favourite ice candy when we were 5 years old.  Hence, childhood memories play a very vital role in our lives.

My Childhood Memories:

I was born and brought up in a very adorable family. I have grown up with my elder brother with whom I used to play a lot. I remember each and every game we used to play together. Every moment is very precious to me. In the afternoon, we used to play cricket in our nearby ground. The memories of playing in the ground together are mesmerising.

Another beautiful thing I can remember is flying kites. It used to be one of the most exciting things of my childhood. Even the older members of the family participated with us. We used to fly kites on our terrace. The kite-flying programme would last for the entire day.

Another beautiful thing I can remember is my visit to the zoo with my family. We made one zoo visit every year. They used to be those very simple yet fun-filled family picnic moments. We would carry packed food from home that my mother used to cook. My elder brother would click several photographs of us. When I look at those pictures now, the memories come alive. Today, so many things have changed but my childhood memories are still fresh in my heart. It feels so refreshing to relive them again and again. My childhood memories are very close to my heart and make me smile on my difficult days.

Perhaps the time I remember very fondly was going to swimming classes. I have always loved playing in the water, and swimming in clear pools was always an exciting activity. Even though I loved the water, at first I could not swim as I was not aware of the basics of the sport. Slowly, as I learnt to kick and paddle, it became easier to swim in shallow water. The big test was swimming in deep water as it was a terrifying thought and simultaneously exciting. I still remember the day I decided to let go of my fears and dived into the deep end of the pool. The instant I jumped into the water, the fear was gone, and I swam like a fish to the other end of the pool. That day also taught me a valuable lesson about taking the first step in any daunting task.

Conclusion:

We should all cherish our childhood memories as they can always be our companion, our “bliss of solitude.” Simple things hold grave meaning when they are from their childhood days. The days were free of complexities and full of innocence. Hence, they are so close to heart.

For example, a child growing up in a close-knit and supportive family may have fond and comforting memories, while a child from a dysfunctional or abusive family may recall traumatic or distressing experiences. These family dynamics can influence a child's sense of security, self-esteem, and overall well-being, ultimately shaping the way they remember their childhood. Furthermore, cultural and societal norms and expectations also play a significant role in shaping childhood memories. The cultural values, traditions, and beliefs that surround a child can influence the activities they engage in, the relationships they form, and the experiences they have. For instance, a child growing up in a collectivist culture may have more communal and group-oriented memories, while a child in an individualistic society may have more individual-focused memories. Moreover, societal factors such as economic status, access to education, and exposure to media can also impact childhood memories. Thus, it is essential to consider the cultural and societal influences when exploring the significance of childhood memories, as they provide important context for understanding and interpreting these formative recollections.

3.1. Family Dynamics and Memories

Family dynamics play a critical role in shaping childhood memories and influencing an individual's development. The interactions, relationships, and communication patterns within the family unit have a profound impact on how memories are formed and perceived. A nurturing and supportive family environment can create positive and cherished memories, while a dysfunctional or strained family dynamic may lead to more negative or distressing recollections. Family rituals, traditions, and customs also contribute to the formation of childhood memories and often shape an individual's perspective on family values and cultural identity. Furthermore, the role of parents, siblings, and extended family members in a child's life greatly influences the memories that are formed. The quality of the parent-child relationship, the presence of authoritative figures, and the level of emotional support provided within the family all contribute to the significance of childhood memories. Additionally, the dynamics between siblings and the relationships with other relatives can impact the overall landscape of one's early memories. It is important to recognize that family dynamics vary across cultures and societal contexts, leading to diverse experiences of childhood memories. The cultural and societal influences on family structures, values, and traditions further shape the way in which childhood memories are formed and perceived. Thus, understanding the significance of family dynamics in the context of childhood memories sheds light on the complex interplay between individual experiences and broader cultural influences.

4. Impact of Childhood Memories on Adult Life

The impact of childhood memories on adult life is a topic that has garnered significant attention in recent years. One aspect of this impact is the effect that childhood memories can have on an individual's relationships and attachment styles as adults. Researchers have found that early experiences, such as the quality of attachment to primary caregivers, can significantly shape an individual's relational patterns in adulthood. For instance, individuals who had secure attachments in childhood tend to be more trusting, have better communication skills, and form healthier, more stable relationships as adults. On the other hand, those who experienced insecure or disorganized attachments may struggle with intimacy, have difficulty trusting others, and exhibit avoidant or anxious attachment styles in their adult relationships. Understanding the connection between childhood memories and adult attachment styles can help individuals become aware of and address any negative patterns or behaviors that may stem from early experiences. Furthermore, recognizing the impact of childhood memories on adult relationships can be beneficial for therapists and counselors working with individuals struggling in their interpersonal dynamics. By addressing and processing early childhood experiences, individuals can gain insight into their relational patterns and work towards developing healthier and more fulfilling adult relationships. Ultimately, exploring the significance of childhood memories in shaping adult attachment styles is crucial for understanding and improving interpersonal connections in adulthood.

4.1. Relationships and Attachment Styles

In exploring the significance of childhood memories, one area of great importance is the impact they have on adult relationships and attachment styles. Research has shown that early experiences, particularly those related to attachment figures such as parents or primary caregivers, can have a profound influence on the development of an individual's attachment style. These attachment styles, which include secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized, can shape the way individuals form and maintain relationships throughout their lives. Children who have experienced secure attachments with their caregivers tend to develop a secure attachment style, characterized by trust, confidence, and the ability to form healthy, lasting relationships. On the other hand, those who have experienced inconsistent or unresponsive caregiving may develop an anxious or avoidant attachment style, leading to difficulties in forming and maintaining relationships in adulthood. Moreover, individuals with disorganized attachment styles may struggle with unresolved childhood trauma, impacting their ability to regulate emotions and establish secure connections with others. Understanding the impact of childhood memories on attachment styles is essential for recognizing and addressing relationship patterns that may stem from early experiences. By acknowledging the influence of childhood memories on adult relationships, individuals can work towards forming more secure attachments, fostering healthier connections, and ultimately enhancing their overall well-being and emotional fulfillment. Thus, exploring the significance of childhood memories in relation to relationships and attachment styles sheds light on the lasting effects of early experiences and their implications for adult life.
