How we’ve selected the Year 6 maths worksheets

We are providing here a selection of the pdf Year 6 maths worksheets and, Year 6 maths tests that we believe can be used with minimal support by 10 or 11 year olds as part of their home learning.

The focus here is on retrieval practice . This means working on skills and knowledge a Year 6 should already have been taught (even if they can’t remember it yet!) and supporting them with strategies to approach SATs questions rather than teaching them new content.

Inevitably there’s a focus at this stage on ensuring pupils core number work is really sound, and on the topics that lend themselves well to Year 6 maths worksheets. There’s nothing here for example on identifying shapes or properties of shapes such as parallelograms or quadrilaterals because you can find these easily online already.

Primary National Curriculum guidance and links to other support is given where relevant alongside the maths worksheets.

Of course one of the skills the SATs papers test is identifying exactly what the question is asking for, and which maths operation to undertake. Year 6 SATs Reasoning Questions

Central to the new maths mastery approach to teaching maths at primary school is the idea that all children of all abilities should be able to solve multi step word problems in maths and reason well. This is why two of the three KS2 SATs papers are SATs reasoning papers.

While these aren’t on a SATs revision worksheet, there are plenty of examples here to help 10 and 11 year olds to practise these kind of questions.

Mortgage interest rates were mostly lower compared to a week ago, according to Bankrate data. Rates for 15-year fixed, 5/1 ARMs and jumbo mortgages moved lower, while rates for 30-year fixed mortgages stayed the same.

Loan type Today's rate Last week's rate Change
6.38% 6.38% N/C
5.68% 5.76% -0.08
5.99% 6.09% -0.10
6.54% 6.57% -0.03

Market mortgage rates shift up and down as the economy changes, policymakers and investors digest new data and lenders decide how much risk they’re willing to tolerate on a given day.

Historical mortgage rates: How do today’s rates compare to years past?

Mortgage rates tumbled in August after a weaker jobs report spooked investors and fueled further expectation for a Federal Reserve rate cut in September. That expectation still stands.

The Fed doesn’t outright determine fixed mortgage rates , but its decisions matter. Mortgages tend to increase or decrease with the 10-year Treasury yield, the effective yield rate on 10-year Treasury notes. The 10-year yield rises when there’s less demand for notes — and this tends to happen when investors feel confident in the economy, including monetary policy.

Still, the Fed, inflation and yields shouldn’t necessarily drive your decision to buy or sell a home. There’s no surefire way to time the housing market, either. If you’re financially ready to move, check mortgage rates regularly to help find the lowest-cost lender.

30-year fixed-rate mortgage holds firm

Today's average 30-year fixed-mortgage rate is 6.38 percent, unchanged over the last seven days. A month ago, the average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage was higher, at 6.51 percent.

At the current average rate, you'll pay a combined $624.20 per month in principal and interest for every $100,000 you borrow.

15-year mortgage rate moves down, -0.08%

The average rate you'll pay for a 15-year fixed mortgage is 5.68 percent, down 8 basis points over the last week.

Monthly payments on a 15-year fixed mortgage at that rate will cost approximately $827 per $100,000 borrowed.

5/1 ARM moves lower, -0.10%

The average rate on a 5/1 ARM is 5.99 percent, falling 10 basis points from a week ago.

Monthly payments on a 5/1 ARM at 5.99 percent would cost about $599 for each $100,000 borrowed over the initial five years.

Jumbo mortgage drops, -0.03%

The average rate for a 30-year jumbo mortgage is 6.54 percent, a decrease of 3 basis points from a week ago. A month ago, the average rate was above that at 6.70 percent.

At today's average jumbo rate, you'll pay a combined $634.70 per month in principal and interest for every $100,000 you borrow. Compared with last week, that's $1.98 lower.

30-year mortgage refinance holds firm

The average 30-year fixed-refinance rate is 6.35 percent, unchanged over the last week. A month ago, the average rate on a 30-year fixed refinance was higher at 6.52 percent.

At the current average rate, you'll pay $622.24 per month in principal and interest for every $100,000 you borrow.

When will mortgage rates go down?

With the widely-expected Fed cut in September, there’s room for mortgage rates to fall more for the remainder of this year and into next year.

“The expectation is that the Federal Reserve will be cutting interest rates multiple times over the next year or two, so a consistent downtrend in mortgage rates well into next year is a reasonable assumption,” says Greg McBride, CFA, chief financial analyst for Bankrate.

The sudden drop in rates in August spurred some homeowners to refinance, but that was short-lived. Homebuyers and homeowners largely plan to hold out for even lower rates, according to Bankrate’s recent Mortgage Rates Survey , which found that 47 percent of homeowners would need rates under 5 percent to feel comfortable buying a home in 2024.

For homeowners wondering whether to refinance, “the time to start thinking about it is when you can shave one-half to three-quarters of a percentage point off your rate,” McBride says.

Methodology

Bankrate displays two sets of rate averages that are produced from two surveys we conduct: one daily (“overnight averages”) and the other weekly (“Bankrate Monitor averages”).

Definitions

Personal income is the income received by, or on behalf of, all persons from all sources: from participation as laborers in production, from owning a home or business, from the ownership of financial assets, and from government and business in the form of transfers. It includes income from domestic sources as well as the rest of world. It does not include realized or unrealized capital gains or losses.

Disposable personal income  is the income available to persons for spending or saving. It is equal to personal income less personal current taxes.

Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) is the value of the goods and services purchased by, or on the behalf of, "persons" who reside in the United States.

Personal outlays is the sum of PCE, personal interest payments, and personal current transfer payments.

Personal saving is personal income less personal outlays and personal current taxes.

The personal saving rate is personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income.

Current-dollar estimates are valued in the prices of the period when the transactions occurred—that is, at "market value." Also referred to as "nominal estimates" or as "current-price estimates."

Real values are inflation-adjusted estimates—that is, estimates that exclude the effects of price changes.

For more definitions, refer to the Glossary: National Income and Product Accounts .

Statistical conventions

Annual rates. Monthly and quarterly values are expressed at seasonally-adjusted annual rates (SAAR). Dollar changes are calculated as the difference between these SAAR values. For detail, refer to the FAQ " Why does BEA publish estimates at annual rates? "

Month-to-month percent changes are calculated from unrounded data and are not annualized.

Quarter-to-quarter percent changes are calculated from unrounded data and are displayed at annual rates. For detail, refer to the FAQ " How is average annual growth calculated? " and " Why does BEA publish percent changes in quarterly series at annual rates? "

Quantities and prices. Quantities, or "real" volume measures, and prices are expressed as index numbers with a specified reference year equal to 100 (currently 2017). Quantity and price indexes are calculated using a Fisherchained weighted formula that incorporates weights from two adjacent periods (months for monthly data, quarters for quarterly data and annuals for annual data). For details on the calculation of quantity and price indexes, refer to Chapter 4: Estimating Methods in the NIPA Handbook.

Chained-dollar values are calculated by multiplying the quantity index by the current dollar value in the reference year (2017) and then dividing by 100. Percent changes calculated from real quantity indexes and chained-dollar levels are conceptually the same; any differences are due to rounding. Chained-dollar values are not additive because the relative weights for a given period differ from those of the reference year. In tables that display chained-dollar values, a "residual" line shows the difference between the sum of detailed chained-dollar series and its corresponding aggregate.

Mortgage rates fall to their lowest since April 2023. Here's where rates could head next.

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

August 28, 2024 / 9:53 AM EDT / CBS News

The Federal Reserve won't make its next rate decision until September 18, but homebuyers are already getting a break on borrowing costs, with the average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage now at its lowest point since April 2023.

The average rate on the most commonly used home loan dipped to 6.44% for the week ended August 23, the Mortgage Bankers Association said on Wednesday.

With rates declining, more home hunters are applying for mortgages, the MBA said. Cheaper borrowing costs could lure some would-be buyers back into the market after many were priced out by the double whammy of high borrowing costs — mortgage rates sat above 7% earlier this year — and record-high home prices.

Even though the Fed's next rate decision is still weeks away, mortgage rates are already declining because home loans are partially influenced by economic factors, such as the strength of the job market. Recent weak economic data, including an underwhelming July jobs report , have raised concerns that the U.S. economy is showing cracks under the strain of the highest federal funds rate in 23 years.

"Rates have now come down more than 80 basis points from a year ago," or 0.8 percentage points, said Joel Kan, MBA's deputy chief economist.

Still, purchase applications haven't changed much despite the lower rates and higher loan applications, he added. "Prospective homebuyers are staying patient now that rates are moving lower and for-sale inventory has started to increase," Kan said.

Where will mortgage rates go in 2024?

Economists are predicting that the Fed is likely to shave its benchmark rate at its September 18 meeting, although they're divided on whether the central bank will cut rates by 0.25 percentage points or 0.5 percentage points.

Regardless, a rate cut is likely to help revive the housing industry by helping to drive mortgage rates even lower, Moody's Analytics economist Mark Zandi wrote in a Monday research report.

"Rates appear set to fall below 6% in coming months as the Fed cuts interest rates," Zandi said.

Existing homeowners reluctant to sell

Still, one issue is the so-called mortgage rate lock, created when millions of homeowners refinanced their loans during the ultra-low mortgage rates available during the pandemic. Many homeowners locked in rates as low as 3%, which has provided a financial disincentive to sell their homes at a time when the mortgage rates are more than double that.

Even if rates drop below 6%, Zandi pointed out, it is "still higher than most existing homeowners are paying on their mortgages, but it is increasingly clear that rates are not going to fall back to where they were during the pandemic."

Zandi predicted that as rates inch lower, more homeowners will be willing to move, given the demands of life changes such as job changes or growing families.

"It is difficult to know how low mortgage rates must go to entice a homeowner with changed family circumstances to post a for-sale sign, but a rate with a 5% handle is probably sufficient," he noted.

Teen Vaping Trend Shows 10-Year Low

Recent polling information shows that the adolescent vaping rate fell to under 6 percent this year..

Vaping has decreased in this demographic.

Fewer adolescents are vaping this year than at any point in the last decade, government officials reported. This indicates a shrinking number of high school students who are using fewer e- cigarettes .

The latest survey numbers show the teen vaping rate fell to under 6 percent this year, down from 7.7 percent in 2023. More than 1.6 million students reported vaping in the previous month--about one-third the number in 2019, when underage vaping peaked with the use of discrete, high-nicotine e-cigarettes like Juul.

This year's decline was mainly driven by a half-million fewer high school students who reported using e-cigarettes in the past month, officials said. Vaping was unchanged among middle schoolers, but remains less common in that group, at just 3.5 percent of students.

"This is a monumental public health win," FDA's tobacco director Brian King told reporters. "But we can't rest on our laurels. There's clearly more work to do to further reduce youth use."

King and other officials noted that the drop in vaping didn't coincide with a rise in other tobacco industry products, such as nicotine pouches.

Sales of small, flavored pouches like Zyn have surged among adults. The subject of viral videos on social media platforms, the pouches come in flavors like mint and cinnamon and slowly release nicotine when placed along the gumline. This year's U.S. survey shows 1.8 percent of teens are using them, largely unchanged from last year.

"Our guard is up," King said. "We're aware of the reported growing sales trends and we're closely monitoring the evolving tobacco product landscape."

The federal survey involved more than 29,000 students in grades 6 through 12 who filled out an online questionnaire in the spring. Health officials consider the survey to be their best measure of youth tobacco and nicotine trends. Thursday's update focused on vaping products and nicotine pouches, but the full publication will eventually include rates of cigarette and cigar smoking, which have also hit historic lows in recent years.

Officials from the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention attributed the big drop in vaping to recent age restrictions and more aggressive enforcement against retailers and manufacturers, including Chinese vaping companies who have sold their e-cigarettes illegally in the U.S. for years.

Use of the most popular e-cigarette among teens, Elf Bar, fell 36 percent in the wake of FDA warning letters to stores and distributors selling the brightly colored vapes, which come in flavors like watermelon ice and peach mango. The brand is part of a wave of cheap, disposable e-cigarettes from China that have taken over a large portion of the U.S. vaping market. The FDA has tried to block such imports, although Elf Bar and other brands have tried to find workarounds by changing their names, addresses and logos.

Teen use of major American e-cigarettes like Vuse and Juul remained significant, with about 12 percent of teens who vape reporting use of those those brands.

In 2020, FDA regulators banned fruit and candy flavors from reusable e-cigarettes like Juul, which are now only sold in menthol and tobacco. But the flavor restriction didn't apply to disposable products, and companies like Elf Bar stepped in to fill the gap.

Other key findings in the report:

-- Among students who current use e-cigarettes, about 26 percent said they vape daily.

-- Nearly 90 percent of the students who vape used flavored products, with fruit flavors as the overwhelming favorite.

-- Zyn is the most common nicotine pouch among teens who use the products.

Your body ages rapidly in two 'bursts,' at 44 and 60. Here's how to prepare.

A new study shows that aging isn't a totally gradual or linear process. While the research comes with caveats, the findings could help us age more gracefully.

A middle-aged man, bent over and facing the camera as he deadlifts over 300 pounds in his garage.

In a   newly published study, Stanford scientists reveal we don't age gradually, as has been traditionally believed. Instead, we age at two significant "bursts" across our post-puberty lifespan: one in our mid-40s, the other in our early 60s.

The molecular changes that occur during each period could explain seeming sudden signs of aging such as the appearance of wrinkles, sagging skin, graying hair, muscle and joint pain, and increased vulnerability to viral infections.

“This study reveals why many people start to 'feel' their age rather suddenly," explains John Whyte, a family medicine physician   and a former director for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, who was not involved in the research. At the same time, he says, it “challenges the traditional view that aging is a slow, continuous process."

( When does old age begin, though? Science says it's later than you think .)

David Sinclair, a molecular geneticist, longevity researcher, and professor at Harvard Medical School, who was also not involved in the research, puts it more pointedly: "The research seems to fly in the face of current models of aging, particularly   the epigenetic clock   and other gradual and linear changes such as steady increases in blood sugar levels."

And while the study may not apply to everyone, Sinclair calls its findings "provocative" and says it indeed shows "large shifts in our biology in our 40s and 60s relative to other times of life post puberty."

The study also follows an evolving scientific view about how we age as other studies have pointed to similar periods where sudden aging seems to occur. "Plenty of research has shown that changes related to aging may occur more suddenly during certain times in our lives," explains Mitch McVey, a biologist at Tufts University who specializes in DNA repair and molecular mechanisms linked to aging, who wasn't involved in the research.

One of the Stanford study's authors, microbiome scientist Xiaotao Shen, says the team’s work also builds on previous findings, “collectively demonstrating that aging is nonlinear.”

But these findings don’t have to make you dread hitting your 40s and 60s. Understanding how and when we age can help individuals and healthcare professionals take specific steps to prevent—or at least prepare for—some of the most undesirable outcomes of aging.

How changes at the molecular level affect you

For nearly two years, the Stanford scientists behind the research measured   molecular activity by analyzing the microorganisms contained in blood, skin, nose, mouth, and gut samples that were taken every three to six months from 108 study participants of various ethnic backgrounds, whose ages ranged from 25 to 75.

The scientists used the samples to examine more than   135,000 different molecules and microbes including metabolites, lipids, proteins, and precursors to proteins (RNA molecules) that are known to be associated with immune health, cardiovascular function, metabolism, kidney function,   and muscle and skin structure.

( It's not your life span you need to worry about. It's your health span .)

Altogether, the samples formed some 246 billion data points (biomarkers) for the team to measure across the 50-year age span of the participants. "We were looking for when changes and disruptions most commonly occurred at a molecular and biochemical level," explains Michael Snyder, a co-author of the study and the chair of the department of genetics at Stanford Medicine.

The results show that 81 percent of the molecules didn't change continuously—as would be expected with linear aging—but instead transformed significantly around ages 44 and 60.

At age 44, some of the observed changes occurred in cells affecting metabolism—which could explain why we have a harder time absorbing and processing caffeine and alcohol as we get older; fatty tissue proteins—which could explain higher cholesterol levels and unexpected weight gain in middle age; and connective tissue proteins associated with skin and muscle structure—which could explain why skin starts to sag, wrinkles appear, and "why people have more issues related to muscle strain and injuries," explains Snyder.

At age 60, the team observed more of those same molecular changes along with notable new fluctuations in molecules related to kidney function and immune health. This, Snyder says, could explain why older adults are more vulnerable to diseases like COVID-19 and why cancer rates, kidney issues, and cardiovascular disorders increase so dramatically in our 60s.

Samuel Lin, an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School and a plastic surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, who was not involved in the research, explains that the molecular changes that suddenly occur during the first aging burst may be further exacerbated when we hit our 60s—with each period resulting in visible outcomes such as declining collagen and elastin production, reduced melanin, and hormonal changes that contribute to diminished skin quality and the graying and thinning of hair.

"These visible signs of aging are direct results of the underlying molecular and microbial shifts occurring within our bodies," he says.

Beyond the visible, Lin notes that shifts in microbial communities throughout the body can also promote inflammation—a key factor in many age-related disorders and chronic conditions.

Identifying such molecular changes occurring at these two distinct periods "is   useful because it tells us what things are likely to go wrong at these stages of our lives," says Venki Ramakrishnan, a Nobel prize-winning scientist and author of Why We Die: The New Science of Aging and the Quest for Immortality , who was not involved in the research.

Limitations and unanswered questions

Despite the benefits this knowledge could bring, the study has a number of limitations and leaves important questions unanswered.

For instance, one major caveat is that all the study participants live in California—increasing the likelihood of their having shared backgrounds, lifestyles, and similar environmental factors. "Because of this, our cohort may not fully represent the diversity of the broader population," says Shen.

The molecular changes observed in the study were also only tracked across multiple individuals of varying ages rather than within the same individuals over time. This missing piece may be essential because previously published Stanford research shows that everyone ages differently, so the study's results may be different in the same   individual   tracked for decades.

The study also did not include any participants over age 75, "which means it doesn't account for aging patterns in the later stages of life," adds Lin.

( What your biological age can reveal about your health .)

Of significant note, the research also doesn't get to the root of what’s causing these changes and doesn’t account for variations in diet or behavioral shifts such as someone experiencing high amounts of stress or diminished sleep quality. It also doesn’t consider whether a person smokes, drinks, or takes prescription medications that might also explain some of these molecular alterations.

In fact,   other research shows   that some people experience a "midlife crisis" in their late 30s and early 40s or a "late-life crisis" in their late 50s and early 60s—two time periods that coincide with these aging "bursts." In other words, "it's possible that associated psychological and lifestyle changes may be responsible for these changes in aging and not due to our inherent biology," explains Sinclair.

Can these bursts of aging be prevented?

Regardless of what’s behind these molecular changes, "the underlying causes of aging are very likely ones we have already identified," says Ramakrishnan, so we have a good idea about what can be done to prevent some of its most undesirable outcomes.

For one, Shen advises reducing your alcohol and caffeine intake when nearing your 40s or 60s as it becomes harder for the body to metabolize both substances.

Snyder recommends keeping an especially close eye   on cholesterol levels and speaking with your healthcare provider as you enter your 40s about medications that may be effective in managing it and reducing other fats in the blood.

( What lifting weights does to your body—and your mind .)

He also stresses the importance of regular exercise, "especially lifting weights to keep muscle mass," as well as drinking more water to counteract age-related kidney issues and consuming more antioxidant-rich foods to reduce adverse effects of oxidative stress.

Sinclair suggests limiting red meat and processed meat intake, eating more vegetables, prioritizing sleep, minimizing stress, keeping excess weight off, and staying active.

Also consider using skincare products that contain retinoids or antioxidants like vitamin C, "which can help maintain skin health by boosting collagen production and reducing free radical damage," advises Lin.

"While we cannot stop the aging process," he adds, "understanding the molecular changes highlighted in this research empowers us to take steps that can enhance our quality of life and help us age more gracefully."

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.
