Our thesis printing & binding is available with a range of standard cover colours and accommodates a wide range of page numbers.

Whether it’s a single book or a larger number, we manage the job in-house for fast and seamless service.

Thesis Binding Options

Thesis binding and comes with a range of cover colour options, including Black, Dark Blue, Silver and Quartz. They come with either matt or metallic finishes are also available.

Thesis covers can be foiled using a digital foil process, which makes it cost-effective and available for one-off books. Or if you wanted to stand out, you can include a cut-out window in the front cover that exposes content on the inside page.

Embossing is also available.

Please note that spine foiling is not available as a standard, in-house option, but can be arranged on request.

Thesis Print & Bind

We can print your thesis from a supplied PDF onto 100gsm, acid-free, archive quality paper. If you wish to print your thesis yourself, please print on paper no thicker than 120gsm.

We offer hard cover binding with a wide range of colours to choose from , with your choice of lettering on spine only or spine and cover. We also offer soft cover binding with plastic spiral, clear cover and card back. Please allow a minimum of 7 working days for hard cover binding and 3 days for soft cover binding. Should you require an express service (for an additional fee), please contact our office during business hours.

• Prepare your thesis for printing * - Avoid placing the page number to the left hand corner of the page as it would be near the spine and may be cut off while binding. - For double-sided printing, please place the page number to page centre. If you place the page numbers in the bottom right hand corner of each page and printed double sided, left hand pages will have page numbers near the spine or may be cut off. - You do not have to make the left-side border bigger to factor-in binding. Standard margins (minimum 20mm) on all sides will be sufficient and required. I agree to bind the thesis as supplied by me and all the binding information provided by me are correct.

Thesis Services

As the oldest bookbinders & manufacturing stationers in Victoria we pride ourselves on our craftsmanship and ability to do all stages of work in house.  

We have gone to great lengths to create a controlled environment in our Bindery which allows our bindings to mellow and stabilise in Melbourne's sometimes extreme climate.  Your work will then be shrink wrapped if requested.

We are not simply a factory or a backyard garage.

Our machines rehumidify print, thus minimising curl in the finished paper & stabilising it.

We import a variety of cloths, leathers and other materials due to the declining range available locally.

We have well qualified staff including graduates, apprentices and european qualified craftsmen.

Our type fonts for lettering are extensive, and we can engrave basically anything you require.  Including laser engraving and digital print.

We have a number of sewing machines and can impose your work into sections for a Rolls Royce job, should you so desire.

Whites Law Bindery has won numerous awards both locally and internationally and are recorded in the Victorian Manufacturers Hall of Fame for excellence.  We have been established for over 70 years.

We also restore and repair older books and documents and have one dedicated craftsman allocated to this area of expertise.

Now, how do I actually go about getting my document bound? 

Read below and for margins etc read our FAQs section

1) Either bring your printed pages to us. We will assist with the requirements and will then bind the work, and you can choose to collect it, or we can mail or courier it to you. Please make sure that paper grain runs with the spine. 

2) Or use our online automated process which generates a quote, and save yourself some time and effort. All we require is that your document be in PDF format. We print and bind and, once again, you can collect it, or we can mail or courier it to you. Word documents are not acceptable

3) If your document is not a standard A4 one, or if you want something a little different you can still do it by email. Similarly if it is a very big file. We have had a dedicated glass cable installed direct to our premises to handle such problems.

Please note that we use acid free paper which is certified as carbon neutral from sustainable forests, and are sewn, rounded and backed. Not square books.

Our leather bindings are gilded on the edges, or marble them ( extra cost) if you require something special. There are examples on this website and our Instagram postings.

Also be sure to read the FAQ for policies regarding 24 hour binding (there is no additional charge) and changes to orders once submitted (incurs charges). If you wish to use our online services, please click the "Order" button below.

Please note that printed copies of your thesis/exergesis are not required for the purpose of examination. Please see the Graduate Research Office website for more information about the examination process.

How to send your thesis for printing

• Request a quote for printing your thesis . You'll need to include details of how many pages, quantities required by you and your faculty, and a delivery address for the printed copies (there is no delivery charge if delivered to your office on campus - via internal mail bag - or to the TUSA Contact centre; delivery to your home address will incur a delivery fee.)
• Mercury Walch will email you a quote letter which will include a links for uploading the electronic file of your thesis for printing and for payment for your print order.
• You'll need to accept the quote via return email, pay for the printing and upload your files using the links supplied by Mercury Walch. Note that it is most economical for you to have the whole document saved to one PDF file. If work is divided into separate chapters in various files, you might incur extra costs charged on an hourly rate for additional work to collate, merge and print off multiple files.
• Mercury Walch will email you when your thesis is printed.
• Your thesis will be delivered to the address you specified when placing the print order.

To save money, many students take the opportunity and use a combination of types of binding for their Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis. The copies intended for submission are therefore bound with high quality leather binding . For copies for themselves or to be given away, the lower cost options of thermal binding or spiral binding are often used.

As a rule of thumb, the prices for printing and binding of extensive theses with leather binding range between 100,00 $ – 200,00 $, and for shorter academic works bound with thermal binding or spiral binding , between 20,00 $ – 70,00 $.

How much does it cost to have a bachelor's thesis printed and bound?

The two major factors to consider when deciding to print and bind your thesis are: the price and the turnaround time (keep an eye on your due dates). The price usually depends on your personal configuration. This includes; which binding you choose, how many pieces you order, which paper for printing you choose and whether you want extensions to your binding such as book corners or a ribbon.

How much does it cost to have a paper printed and bound?

The price for printing and binding a paper is dependent on a few factors. These include: how many pages you want to be printed and bound, your personal configuration (e.g which type of binding you choose), how many pieces you order or whether you want extensions to your binding such as book corners or a ribbon.

Where can I order the printing and binding of my thesis?

For the printing and binding of your thesis, you can choose between a usual copy shop or an online print shop. Advantages of an online printing service, like ours, are: ability to easily order from wherever you are, a quick turnaround and print time , delivery to your address, configuration of your binding with our 3D live preview and look inside function.

How long does the printing and binding of a thesis take?

The duration it takes to print and bind a thesis depends on where and how you make the order. You can either go to a copy shop or simply make an order online, through an online print shop like BachelorPrint. The advantages of an online print shop are that you don’t have to wait around in a store, you can do everything from the comfort of your home and the printing production time is short. Based on when you make your order, for example at 9am, we can print, bind and deliver your work within 24 hours (depending on your location)!

How can I save on printing and binding my thesis?

If you have a scholarship that covers binding and publication costs please email the CBE HDR student administration at  [email protected] . Otherwise please contact your Research School Office Manager who can advise regarding any school support available. If  APA scholarship , details are noted in the  APA Scholarship Thesis Allowance Policy .

Headbands & Archival Endsheets

Our Hard Cover books include top & bottom Headbands – chequered fabric that decorate and protect the edges of the spine of your book. Hard Cover books also use archival-quality Endsheets – the pages which attach your book’s body to its Hard Cover case, as well as heavy blank/fly pages on the front & back cover.

We can print your document from a PDF file (see sidebar), or you can mail your already printed document for Hard Cover Binding. Simply click your Hard Cover binding style above and follow the instructions. You will be prompted to print your order form. You’ll then pack it with your documents and ship us the package.

Shipping date is available on the day that you order. Tracking Number is available only if your order has shipped. For Printed Hardcover binding, shipping date will change based on the time you approve cover proof.

Thesis printing

HDR students are not required to print their thesis for examination. On occasion an external examiner may request a hard copy of a thesis but the Office of Graduate Research will contact you if this is required.

A final hard bound copy of your thesis is not required for the library. All theses will be stored digitally.  Students will be guided on how to upload their thesis to the library when their examination is complete.  However, if you would like to print a copy of your thesis for personal use then you may wish to consider Flinders Press for soft bound copies or TK Print for hard bound printing.

Research higher degree students can claim up to $500 towards the cost of thesis editing and optional printing and binding of the final thesis copy. Claims for the thesis allowance reimbursement must be lodged within one year of the final examined and University approved version of the thesis being uploaded to the Flinders Library repository. For reimbursement, please access Inspire go to the Degree Management tab and complete a HDR Allowance form or if you have lost access to Inspire please contact the RHD Scholarships team about your request.

Flinders Press accepts theses for printing and soft binding each week on Wednesdays before 10.30am. You will need to visit Flinders Press (Flinders Press Building, car park 9) with your student ID and print ready file. 

Normally the thesis will be ready to collect within 24 – 48 hours depending on work loadings. 

No Microsoft Word or Publisher files accepted – A4 format pdf only

Single sided B&W: 10 cents per A4 page Single sided Colour: 15 cents per A4 page

Cash not accepted – invoices will be emailed and can be paid online.

Soft Bound (coiling): $4.50 per bound item including A4 acetate clear front cover sheet and 200gsm plain board back cover.

Note - 220 sheets of paper is the thickest a book can be bound or it may have to be split into separate volumes.

All Australian National University theses are in digital form. You can search for them online through the  theses collection in ANU Open Research , and are also searchable via the  Library Catalogue .

The majority of ANU theses are openly accessible but a small number are restricted due to cultural sensitivities, copyright controls or other restrictions.

Digital theses

Digital theses can be searched online through the  theses collection in ANU Open Research .

The Australian National University Library’s theses collection holds the research output of the University’s academic community over the last 60 years. The first ANU thesis was awarded in 1953.

By digitising its print theses collection, ANU Library delivers the University’s unique and original research in a freely available, open access online collection. Digital delivery expands engagement with the Library’s collections, provides visibility to the university’s scholarship, and supports the careers of its academic community.

Restrictions

The majority of theses are openly accessible; however, some may not be available under open access conditions due to author or copyright restrictions.

If an author wishes to restrict access to their thesis (or part of it), they can elect to do so as part of the online submission process. If after 12 months an extension to that restriction is required, a new application must be completed.

In the case of a Higher Degree by Research thesis, approval is required from the Dean, Higher Degree Research and can be sought by filling out an  Extension of Thesis Restriction of Access Request Form  or emailing  [email protected] . If approved, the Open Research team will be notified and restrict access to the online version of your thesis in line with the decision made.

Hard copy theses

Hard copy theses can be requested  for reading within the Library, but cannot be borrowed.

The majority of theses are available for research or study, however some may not be available due to author or copyright restrictions.

To check whether access restrictions apply to a particular thesis, ask at the  Menzies Library  Information Desk or email the  ANU Library .

Non-ANU readers are advised to check in advance whether they will be granted access to a particular thesis.

• ANU Doctoral and Masters’ theses (1953-2018) –  Menzies Library
• Master of Law and International Law theses (pre-October 1987) –  Law Library
• ANU Honours theses – held by the  ANU Colleges
• ANU Law Honours theses (selected) – Law Library or online through  ANU Open Research
• Non-ANU theses (without access restrictions) are on the open shelves.

Finding theses

University of sydney theses, higher degree by research theses.

We hold theses written by the University’s Higher Degree by Research (PhD or Masters by Research) students in our collections.

You can find a University of Sydney thesis by searching the  Library catalogue . Select the “Advanced search” and then select “USYD Theses” from the “Material type” dropdown menu.

You can also find digital theses by searching directly in the Sydney eScholarship repository .

Access a digital or digitised thesis

Many of the University’s digital and digitised theses are openly available for download through the Sydney eScholarship repository .

Theses marked “University of Sydney Access” are only available to current University staff and students. Libraries and private researchers can request to purchase a copy of a University of Sydney Access only thesis for AUD$18.50 (incl. GST, within Australia) or AUD$40.00 (international requests).

To purchase a digital thesis, you need to complete one of the relevant request forms below and submit it to [email protected] :

• Individuals requesting a thesis, or library requesting on behalf of an individual
• Libraries requesting a copy to be included in their collection

All requests for copies of material held at the University of Sydney Library must comply with the  Copyright Act of 1968 .

Access a hard copy thesis

Theses that are only available in printed format can be viewed in the Rare Books and Special Collections Library , Level 1, Fisher Library.

We are currently running a project to digitise hardcopy theses. You can request an update to find out where a particular thesis is in our digitisation queue by emailing [email protected] .

We don’t digitise theses on request.

Honours or postgraduate coursework theses

Search for an honours or postgraduate coursework thesis in the repository , then use the filters on the left side of the results page to narrow by “Type”.

You can also search the Honours and Postgraduate Coursework theses collection for a faculty, school or discipline (if available).

There are limited numbers of honours theses in the Sydney eScholarship repository as we have strict requirements for submission of honours theses . If you can't find the thesis you're looking for, we suggest contacting the relevant faculty office.

Find a thesis from other Australian or New Zealand universities by searching:
