Answer: Evelyn heard music by sensing the notes in different parts of her body. When Ron Forbes tuned two drums to different notes and asked her to sense the sound without using her ears, she realized that she could feel the higher drum from the waist up and the lower drum from the waist down. She learnt how to open her mind and body to sounds and vibrations. It was sheer determination and hard work. When she played the xylophone, she could sense the sound passing up the stick into her fingertips. By leaning against the drums, she could feel the resonances flowing into her body. On a wooden platform, she removed her shoes so that the vibrations could pass through her bare feet and up her legs. She herself said that music poured in through every part of her body. It tingles in the skin, her cheekbones and even in her hair.

You have now read about two musicians, Evelyn Glennie and Ustad Bismillah Khan. Do you think that they both worked hard? Where did they want to ‘go’?

Evelyn Glennie is an inspiration to everyone. She grew profoundly deaf by the time she was eleven years old. She auditioned in Royal Academy of Music in London when she was not even seventeen years old and scored one of the highest marks in the history of the academy. In a field like music that’s entirely linked to listening, she began to sense music through different parts of her body. She brought percussion to the front of the orchestra. She was awarded with the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Soloist of the Year Award in the year 1991. She inspires people with her life and optimism.
Ustad Bismillah Khan belonged to a family of professional musicians. Shehnai was being used in temples and marriages, but the credit of bringing shehnai onto the classical stage goes to Ustad Bismillah Khan. He took to music in early years of his life. At the age of three, he was quite fascinated watching his uncles playing the shehnai. On the day of independence of India, he was the first Indian to greet the nation with his shehnai. He was strongly bonded to Benaras and the holy Ganga. He was awarded India’s highest civilian award- Bharat Ratna.

In the poem, the poet is speaking about the wind and urging it to drop gently. Then he says that strong winds are dangerous. He then demands that the wind investigate the destruction it has caused. In the opening line of the poem, the author alludes to the wind as a small kid. To begin, he said it comes softly, as if it were a kid. In the next paragraph, the poet kept repeating the term "crumbling" to emphasise that it all crumbles in the midst of a powerful wind. As a result, the poet wishes to convey that when the wind is powerful, everything breaks.
Furthermore, anything that is weak responds to adversity by crumbling or collapsing. As a result, the poet claims that weak individuals fail or break down anytime they meet adversity or a test in life.

I. 1. What are the things the wind does in the first stanza?
Ans: The poem starts with the poet describing the violent face of the wind. Wind with its violent action, especially during a natural calamity, breaks off the shutters of windows and scatters the papers in the room. It also throws down books from the shelf, tears the pages of the books, and brings down showers.
2. Have you seen anybody winnow grain at home or in a paddy field? What is the word in your language for winnowing? What do people use for winnowing? (Give the words in your language if you know them.)
Ans: Yes, I have witnessed women winnowing grain in villages. It is the process of separating grains from the chaff. It is majorly done for paddy crops. In the process, traditionally the dried grains are allowed to fall from a height. “Soop” is the winnowing basket that is used for the process and "ooswoni" is the term used in Hindi for winnowing.
3. What does the poet say the wind god winnows?
Ans: The poet has compared the traditional farming practices of winnowing with the destruction that the wind creates during a natural calamity. Winnowing is a constructive process and helps us collect grains for survival. On the other hand, the fierce wind, like the process of winnowing uproots all the crumbling homes, wood, bodies, lives, and hearts. It crushes and removes them entirely and only the best survives.
4. What should we do to make friends with the wind?
Ans: As human beings, we don't hold the strength to stand against nature. To make friends with them we need to build strong homes. We should also make ourselves physically and mentally strong by building strong, firm bodies and having steadfast hearts so that next time when such a calamity hits the area again, they are ready to combat and withstand it physically and emotionally.
5. What do the last four lines of the poem mean to you?
Ans: In the last four lines poem reminds everyone to be strong-willed because it is highly unlikely that a storm will not hit them again. We should be mentally strong to face all the challenges that life throws at us. These challenges do make the weak heart crumble and extinguish like weak fires. Contrary to its effect on weak people, challenges make the strong people stronger, just like wind makes strong fires roar and flourish. Having a positive attitude towards hardships not only makes them easier to deal with but also teaches a lesson that we carry with us throughout our lives.
6. How does the poet speak to the wind — in anger or with humour? You must also have seen or heard of the wind “crumbling lives.” What is your response to this? Is it like the poets?
Ans: There is a tinge of anger in the poet's tone while speaking to the wind. Strong wind breaks away the fragile items human beings have put together. They cause plenty of damage and destruction to both life and property and human beings are bound to submit to the cruelty of nature. Storms, cyclones, gales, and intense winds cause havoc on the land. They uproot trees, bring down houses, electric posts, and claim an encumber of lives.
Yet, I do not agree with the poet that the wind only ‘crumbles lives.’ The wind is also responsible for bringing rains and contributing to the water cycle. It lowers the temperature of the land and helps as a carrier of pollen grains too. With advancements in technology, the wind is also utilized for the purposes of energy harnessing using wind power plants.

Summary of the poem .
The poem is all about wind and we all know that wind is a natural phenomenon. In the poem, the poet has described the nature of the wind and addressed it as destructive in certain situations. He compares wind to the lives of human beings. He says that weak people break down quickly, but healthy people emerge out stronger. The poem also gives a fundamental lesson that we should be mentally tough and physically fit to survive life's hardships. However, a weak person tends to crumble and break down quickly. So we must befriend the wind just like we should befriend the adversities of life.
In the poem, the poet talks to the wind. The poet says that the wind comes delicately and softly. Then he describes that mighty wind is destructive, and it breaks the shutters and windows and scatters things like paper. He also says that weak beings like plants or children tend to get fearful or hurt whenever the wind is strong. The poet initially refers to the wind as a child. Later on, he calls it destructive, like a youth full of energy and violence. In an angry tone, the poet addresses the wind. Powerful winds are known to cause a great deal of harm and misery. It causes harm to land, water, and property. I.Sustainable development is an organizing principle for meeting human development goals while simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural systems to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services which the economy and society depend on. Sustainable development can be defined as the practice of maintaining the productivity by replacing resources used with resources of equal or greater value without degrading or endangering natural biotic systems. Sustainability
science is the study of the concepts of sustainable development and environmental science. There is an emphasis on the present generations' responsibility to regenerate, maintain and improve planetary resources for use by future generations.
II.Sustainability goals, such as the current UN-level Sustainable Development Goals, address the global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Sustainable development can be thought of in terms of three spheres, dimensions, domains or pillars: the environment, the economy and society. The three-sphere framework was initially proposed by the economist Rene Passet in 1979. It has also been worded as economic, environmental and social" or "ecology, economy and equity". This has been expanded by some authors to include a fourth pillar of culture, institutions or governance.
III.The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030. They are included in a UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda or what is colloquially known as Agenda 2030. The SDGs were developed in the Post-2015 Development Agenda as the future global development framework to succeed the Millennium Development Goals which ended in 2015. The 17 SDGs are: (1) No Poverty, (2) Zero Hunger, (3) Good Health and Well-being, (4) Quality Education, (5) Gender Equality, (6) Clean Water and Sanitation, (7) Affordable and Clean Energy, (8) Decent Work and Economic Growth, (9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, (10) Reducing Inequality, (11) Sustainable Cities and Communities, (12) Responsible Consumption and Production, (13) Climate Action, (14) Life Below Water, (15) Life On Land, (16) Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, (17) Partnerships for the Goals.
IV.Though the goals are broad and interdependent, two years later (6 July 2017) the SDGs were made more actionable" by a UN Resolution adopted by the General Assembly. The resolution identifies specific targets for each goal, along with indicators that are being used to measure progress toward each target. The year by which the target is meant to be achieved is usually between 2020 and 2030. For some of the targets, no end date is given. To facilitate monitoring, a variety of tools exist to track and visualize progress towards the goals. The intention is to make data more available and easily understood. For example, the online publication SDG Tracker, launched in June 2018, presents available data across all indicators. The SDGs pay attention to multiple cross-cutting issues, like gender equity, education, and culture. There were serious impacts and implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on all 17 SDGs in the year 2020.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change has emerged as one of the main environmental challenges facing the world today. As a result of climate change, the global mean temperature is estimated to increase between 1.4 and 5.8 °C (centigrade) by 2100. This unprecedented increase is expected to have a severe impact on the global hydrological system, ecosystem, sea level, crop production and related processes. The impact would be particularly severe in the tropical areas, which mainly consist of developing countries, including India, warned the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Like any other country, India too would be hit by temperature variations, like its adverse impact on agriculture and food production, water resources, forest and biodiversity, health and coastal management. This is in addition to the stress on the ecological and socio-economic systems that are already facing tremendous pressures due to rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and unscientific economic development.
Though global efforts are afoot to mitigate the impact of climate change and global warming, especially after the 2015 Paris Summit", the division still exists among the rich nations on its contributions to such efforts.
The ability of nations and their populations to tide over the crisis depends on their resourcefulness. While the wealthy could find funds for a retreat to safety, temporary accommodation and relocation, the poor might not be able to evacuate. Access to food, water and housing or energy might not be available or affordable to them. Those responsible for climate change are relatively insulated from its impacts, while those affected face greater adversities with limited resources.
The global organization Oxfam says, the world's richest 10% cause 50% of emissions and they claim over half of the world's wealth. Conversely, the poorest 50% of the population contribute roughly about 10% of global emissions and receive only about 8% of global income.
On the micro-level the impact of global warming and climate change on agriculture and healthcare greatly affects the poor, who do not have the wherewithal to survive its impacts.
Poor nations would have to bear the most severe impacts of climate change, as their dependence on agriculture and therefore, vulnerability to extreme heat is higher than rich nations.
* The Paris Agreement united almost all the world's nations-for the first time-in a single agreement on cutting the greenhouse gas emissions which are causing global warming. World is off track to meet Paris Agreement climate target.
