Resume tips.

There is an old adage that implies a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Your job search is composed of numerous links and the ability to produce an effective resume is a vital link to this chain. Consider the following when approaching this potentially intimidating task:

  • There are no hard and fast rules.  An effective resume reflects your “uniqueness” as an individual.  IT IS YOUR STORY and should be regarded as a “Living Document”, requiring updates several times each semester.
  • The “story” told on your resume should reflect a TRUTHFUL summary of your accomplishments.  Misrepresentations and overenhancements always lead to trouble with potential employers.
  • You only get one chance to make a positive first impression! Make sure your “story” is told free of grammatical and spelling errors.
  • Have fun with this project – it should be an enjoyable “story” for you to produce!
  • Remember, resumes don’t get you jobs – they get you interviews.  Hence, another important link to your career chain!

Your resume “story” should be composed of several relevant “chapters”.  The following are suggestions for each of these:

  • Not all modern-day resumes include an objective statement.  If included, be specific to the point of what you are looking to achieve or obtain with your internship or job search.  Most employers are scanning resumes very quickly looking for key words and if the first item they encounter is a weak objective statement, there is a good chance you may not make it to the first round of interviews.
  • School(s) attended (usually do not include high school).  If multiple, list the most recent first.
  • Degree (Associates, Bachelor of Science, Masters, Doctoral) and date receiving degree.  Spell these out versus using abbreviations (BS, MS, PhD, etc.)
  • Major(s).  Include Option/Emphasis within major if offered.
  • Grade point (optional)
  • Thesis/Dissertation title for graduate level degrees
  • Percent of college education financed by self

Relevant Coursework

  • Although often times looked upon as “filler” by employers, specific coursework may be beneficial for research-based or technology careers in which certain lab techniques or computer skills are desired.

International Experiences

  • Today’s college student is provided the affordable opportunity to experience a diverse array of study abroad or international experiences.  These experiences definitely belong on a resume as recruiters recognize their value.  They may also be very beneficial in answering many of the behavioral-based questions asked during the course of an interview.  Tell me about….
  • On the resume, limit each experience to a couple brief sentences summarizing the major purpose or accomplishment of the trip.

Work Experience

  • Organize chronologically – most recent first.
  • Utilize bolding to emphasize “company” and italics for “position title”

Company , location Title,  dates of employment Bullet (describe job responsibilities/job accomplishments) Bullet Bullet

  • Utilize bullets to summarize responsibilities and accomplishments (Example - capstone internship project) rather than paragraphs. Quantify if possible.
  • Bullets can be complete or incomplete sentences.
  • Incorporate action verbs (get a list of these!) and “buzzwords” associated with your area of interest.
  • Watch verb tenses – past vs. present.  Pronouns are usually not necessary – “I”.
  • Avoid word redundancy (Example - repetitive use of same verb in bullets).
  • Farm background??? Make sure you include it on resume as recruiters recognize work ethic and values associated with it.  Include specifics – farm size, crops, livestock, machinery, ownership, etc.
  • Can include volunteer activities in this section.
  • Remember, regardless of the type of job, there are always universal tangibles that can be pulled from the work experience.  Example – teamwork, customer service, management responsibilities, computer skills, etc.

Activities & Honors

This is one of the most important sections of the resume as recruiters are looking to hire potential leaders.  If you don’t have any activities – find some!  It is never too late to start.  Include the following:

  • Campus clubs/organizations (list specific offices held – ex. President)
  • Professional organizations
  • Fraternities & sororities
  • Volunteer activities
  • Scholarships
  • Dean’s List
  • Honorary academic memberships (Alpha Zeta, Gamma Sigma Delta, etc.)
  • Other academic recognition

Note: As a freshman and sophomore it is acceptable to include important activities/honors from high school (Valedictorian, Iowa FFA Degree, etc.) on your resume.  However, as you progress during your college years these activities should be replaced with current college activities and honors.

Publications & Presentations

This section is usually reserved for graduate students but may occasionally apply to undergraduates.  If applicable, list appropriate authors, publications, conferences, etc.

  • List them on your resume!
  • There is no magic number on how many to list (3-4 is standard).
  • Keep current and include references from academic and work experiences.
  • Be detailed (name, title, work affiliation, address including zip code, email and telephone number)
  • Always ask if they will serve as a reference and inform them when you are applying for specific positions. Extend a note of “thanks” for their efforts if you do get the position.

Other tips for a successful resume include:

  • In most cases a two-page resume is acceptable.  Curriculum Vitae may be longer.
  • Use white or light-colored, standard size (8-1/2” x 11”) paper, printed on one side.  Since many resumes are faxed or photocopied, do not use dark, marbled, speckled, or heavy paper.
  • Mail resumes and cover letters in large manila envelopes to avoid folding.
  • When emailing a resume, include specific name (example - John Doe Resume) of resume in email subject line.

Top 10 resume trends in 2024: what you need to know to stand out.

For most people, resume writing is a daunting task.

Job hunters wonder about how to improve their resume. Mary, a director at a large company, called for help with resume writing because she was losing her job. She said, “I’m sure my resume doesn’t represent me very well. I want it to be impressive, but I’m stumbling on how to create it. I hear people say they send out dozens of resumes with no response, which makes me very anxious. How must I differentiate myself to get an employer’s attention?”

For most people, resume writing is a daunting task. The stakes are high. Yet, you may be unaware of the current resume trends you need to consider. Here are the ten resume trends to understand to help you showcase your uniqueness and capabilities and stand out to an employer.

Self-Marketing. Self-analysis is essential to do before you start writing. Think of your resume as an advertisement trying to get an employer to buy the product, and that product is you. Outline what you are best at doing. Note your top strengths. What are relevant credentials and experience to emphasize? Identify your best accomplishments.

RESULTS. Employers hire you based on your previous achievements and the belief that you can repeat those if they hire you. Each work description must focus on sharing measurable results and outcomes. Be specific. Employers value concrete accomplishments. Emphasize if you made the company money, saved money, started something, made an innovation, or created a new tool, process, system, or program. Incorporate numbers and percentages into your bullet descriptions. Have your most impressive accomplishments and best experience near the top of the description.

Prioritize. Target what is most important to employers. Determine the key elements they seek and tailor your resume to their needs. To identify the key points to highlight, review several relevant job openings. Focus on the top three to five qualifications and duties they advertise for. Incorporate that information into your resume to demonstrate that you have what a potential employer values.

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Highlight. Showcase your success. Under your work history, you should use bullet points to create each statement. The most effective way to develop these is to use the formula: Actions = Results, noting what you did and its impact. For example, “Developed and executed a new email fundraising campaign, and the results increased donations by 21%.” Or state the dollar amount if that is impressive.

Keywords. Research the job description, paying close attention to the required skills and qualifications, and align your relevant skills accordingly. Identify the more critical tasks, such as project management or process improvement, and sprinkle these sparingly throughout the resume, especially in the work descriptions and in the summary section. Include any relevant industry terms, too. Don’t try to “keyword stuff” throughout the resume, as the ATS may reject your resume, and a recruiter may disregard it, viewing it as being too generic or lacking.

Action verbs. Under your work descriptions, start each sentence with an action verb. Use words highlighting the skill or accomplishments, such as Led, Drove, Analyzed, Designed, Originated, Implemented, Established, etc. Avoid repetition, and don’t use that same action verb to start a statement within a particular work description. Write the sentence in the past tense, even for your current position.

ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). ATS is a human resources software that works as an online database or a digital filing cabinet when you submit a job application. It’s not very sophisticated and requires search engine optimization. Avoid any creative resume style. Simple formatting is the key to getting through the system’s filters. Eliminate columns, tables, text boxes, headers, footers, graphics, color ink, or PDFs (unless specifically requested).

Qualifications. Employers hire someone with the skillset necessary to succeed in that advertised job. They want a person who is not underqualified or overqualified. Carefully evaluate the role before you hit “apply.” Assess your skills, education, and experience to ensure the job closely fits your background. Refrain from applying for a job if you don’t have 80% of the qualifications required.

Soft skills. These traits help show how you fit into the job role and match the company’s culture. Include appropriate ones to supplement your hard skills. The top soft skills employers value beyond excellent oral and written communication are collaboration, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, leadership, adaptability, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

Competencies. Employers find no value when you list a lot of competencies, such as project management, team leadership, results-driven, etc., in one section since you aren’t demonstrating exactly where you used these abilities. Avoid creating this section. Instead, inserting these competencies into the work history and summary of qualifications is much more effective. That way, you illustrate how you have that skill and apply it on the job.

Key Takeaways

  • ChatGPT is a versatile tool that can help with tasks like writing customized resumes & cover letters.
  • The AI can generate original jokes and memes, as well as explain complex topics in an easy-to-understand manner.
  • ChatGPT can assist with mathematics, music composition, coding, media file manipulation, and health improvement.

Artificial intelligence tools have seen a meteoric rise within the last few years. We've been wowed by AI writing tools, AI image generators, and even AI self-portraits. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has gotten a lot of attention for its numerous uses. To help you leverage this tool, here are 15 ways you can also use ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Home screen

If you've somehow missed the whole ChatGPT buzz, or you're not exactly sure what it's all about, let's help you get up to speed. ChatGPT is a conversational artificial intelligence chatbot that can answer just about any question you throw at it.

You can think of it as a supercharged Google Search. Rather than just providing links or snippets, ChatGPT generates thoughtful, conversational responses to queries. It synthesizes information from diverse sources into cohesive answers on nearly any topic, similar to how a knowledgeable human would respond.

While not infallible, ChatGPT demonstrates an impressive ability to understand natural language questions and offers nuanced explanations in a lot of fields.

ChatGPT is more than just hype—it has practical uses. Here are some cool day-to-day uses for ChatGPT you can try right now.

1. Quickly Write a Customized Resume and Cover Letter

If you're currently job-hunting, one of the most tiring parts of the job application process is writing a personalized resume and cover letter for every job you apply for. You need custom-made copies for each job to increase your chances of getting hired. ChatGPT can help you create a customized resume or craft professional cover letters in minutes.

We asked ChatGPT to write a resume for a content marketing role at a fictional SaaS company, and it was near perfect.

Resume created by ChatGPT

We also prompted it to prepare a cover letter for the same role, and the first result wasn't bad.

Cover letter written by ChatGPT

Notice how detail-rich and well-formatted the resume and cover letter are? How did I do it? I pasted my LinkedIn profile details, and then asked ChatGPT to write a resume for the target role "using LaTex." I copied the result, pasted it in a free latex editor like Overleaf , and compiled it.

2. Create Original Jokes and Memes

What's life without a bit of fun? Whether you're looking for a good laugh or to create some hilarious jokes to impress your friends, ChatGPT can come in handy. Sure, AI chatbots aren't exactly known to be great comedians, but ChatGPT shows some potential. We asked ChatGPT to tell us a joke about Apple and foldable smartphones; we'll let you judge the results:

ChatGPT joke about foldable phones

ChatGPT can also create images, so you can also play around with meme ideas. Here's one to try: Ask ChatGPT to create a meme about the grind of 9-to-5 jobs.

3. Explain Complex Topics

Sometimes, simply Googling a topic doesn't give you a clear understanding. Think of topics like wormholes, dark matter, and all those head-spinning theories. Or maybe it's a weird sport you don't understand.

ChatGPT could be useful in explaining them in layperson terms. We prompted ChatGPT to "Explain wormholes like I'm 5," and here's the result:

ChatGPT explains Wormhole

We also prompted it to explain the internet similarly. It wasn't too bad, either.

4. Solve Tricky Math Problems Step-by-Step

Whether you're looking to tackle complex algebra problems or simple math problems that are too tricky to piece together, ChatGPT is particularly strong at handling math. You'll need to present your problems clearly and concisely for the best results. We prompted ChatGPT to answer a tricky math problem, and here's the result:

5. Write Music In Almost Any Genre

One of the most exciting things you can do with ChatGPT is writing a song. It might sound like a bad idea at first, but it's really a fun thing to try. The results can be amazing when you get the prompts right. The key to getting the best result is to provide as many details as possible about how you want the song to be. Need a mix of English and some Spanish with a touch of Afrobeat style? Just say it.

If you really want to find out how good your lyrics would sound in an actual song, you'll need to head over to a tool like Suno.ai to turn the lyrics into music. Just paste the lyrics into the tool, make some tweaks and listen to what ChatGPT could make.

6. Write, Debug, and Explain Code

Whether you're an experienced programmer or a newbie, you're bound to run into a few bugs in your code from time to time. ChatGPT can help you narrow down the problem within your code, saving you hours looking for a misplaced comma. You can also write entire blocks of functional code snippets from scratch or analyze existing code bases to figure out the best ways to use them. There are endless ways you can use ChatGPT in programming .

We prompted ChatGPT to write a simple to-do list app using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and here's the result:

We also got the AI chatbot to write us a simple Tetris game, snake game, pong game, and even code a complete chat web app from scratch . ChatGPT is a very useful programming tool.

7. Create, Edit, and Modify Media Files

With ChatGPT, you can create, edit, modify, and read from a wide range of media files. The feature which is available on the ChatGPT Plus plan provides an interface to programmatically create images, modify videos, adjust audio tracks, and retrieve crucial metadata from media files with ease and precision.

To learn more about manipulating media files with ChatGPT, read our guide on how to use the ChatGPT Code Interpreter feature .

8. Decide What to Watch Next

ChatGPT is one of the most powerful movie recommendation tools on the internet if you know how to use it. While there are dozens of powerful movie recommendation tools you can get your hands on, ChatGPT stands out because of the accuracy and precision you get from simply describing the kind of movies you want using simple natural language prompts.

We asked ChatGPT to give us some movies that are similar to "The Walking Dead" and here's the result:

Not sure how to use ChatGPT as a movie recommendation tool? We've previously put together a detailed guide on how to use ChatGPT to decide what to watch next .

We've put together a guide on how to use ChatGPT to improve your health .

12. Translate and Learn In Multiple Languages

ChatGPT is a great tool to have around if you need to work in multiple languages. It is fluent in dozens of languages. If you're a content creator who would love to reach a wider audience, ChatGPT could be incredibly useful for creating content in multiple languages.

Sure, there's Google Translate, but writing in one language and translating to the other means context and language-specific tones could be lost. When we compared ChatGPT to Google Translate in translation tasks, ChatGPT was noticeably better in several metrics.

With ChatGPT's latest voice mode, the tool has become even significantly more powerful for those trying to learn a new language or communicate with someone that speaks a different one.

13. Prepare for a Job Interview

With a few intelligent prompts, ChatGPT can help you get your dream job . You can use it to generate hypothetical scenarios in a job interview, possible questions, intelligent replies to possible questions, and many other useful interview prep tips.

We created a hypothetical situation during an interview and asked ChatGPT for help. Here's the result:

14. Write Essays on Almost Any Topic

While we strongly advise you to write your essays yourself, ChatGPT can compose amazing essays on a wide range of topics, even the most complex. If the tone of the resulting write-up doesn't suit your test, you can teach ChatGPT how to write like you so you can get the chatbot to replicate your writing style.

15. A Chat Companion

When all is said and done, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot. Despite its almost endless use cases, ChatGPT is a very accommodating companion when you need someone (or a robot) to talk to.

ChatGPT companion

Despite ChatGPT's impressive capabilities, the AI chatbot is not infallible. Consequently, exercising caution with ChatGPT's information is highly advised. Always strive to verify any critical data from ChatGPT before applying it, especially for important health or financial choices. While ChatGPT is a game-changing tool, it is still a work in progress, and human oversight remains essential.

How to use ChatGPT to write your resume

screenshot-2024-03-27-at-4-28-37pm.png

Back-to-school season is here, which means applications to their next academic ventures, internships, or first jobs are top of mind for many students. Whether you're seeking to launch your career or you've been in the labor market for decades, there's one thing we can all agree on -- creating a resume that attracts the eye of recruiters is a challenge.

How to use ChatGPT to write:  Cover letters  |  Code | Excel formulas | Essays

Landing a job that aligns with your qualifications and expectations is hard enough. You also have to sum up all your professional experiences and strengths in one application -- and the heart of that application is your CV or resume.

The ideal resume is a concise one-page document that highlights your academic, professional, and leadership achievements, which is just as difficult to assemble as it sounds. OpenAI's  ChatGPT  can make the resume-building process a breeze.

How ChatGPT can help build your resume

You can use ChatGPT to generate ideas and bullet points for your role from scratch or to refine and optimize your current points that are not hitting the mark. Beyond key points, the AI tool can help you answer questions about putting together your resume. Here's how to get started.

Side note:  We are using ChatGPT, but you can use any AI chatbot -- there are plenty of capable AI chatbots to choose from .

1. Choose a resume template

ChatGPT will help you with the text in your resume, but you'll need to pick a template before you get started. The program you're using to write the resume -- such as Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or Canva -- will likely have a resume template already.

Also: How to use ChatGPT to digitize your handwritten notes for free

A quick Google search for resume templates will also bring up hundreds of editable templates you can import into your program of choice.

2. Sign in to ChatGPT (optional)

On April 1, 2024, OpenAI stopped requiring you to log in to ChatGPT. You can now access ChatGPT simply by visiting ChatGPT's website . However, if you want to take advantage of certain perks, such as being able to revisit the chat later, analyzing PDFs , or digitizing hand-written notes , you need to sign up to access those features.

Also:  How to save a ChatGPT conversation to revisit later

Signing up is easy. Go to OpenAI's ChatGPT homepage and open an account by creating an OpenAI login or using your existing Google or Microsoft account. ChatGPT is free, so the sign-up process is simple, requiring no credit cards or obscure information.

3. Add text

If you want ChatGPT to generate text for your resume from scratch, all you have to do is ask.

Whether you want it to generate your professional summary or an individual bullet, ask it directly. For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you write a short, professional resume summary about my role as a tech reporter?" Within seconds, it generated what you see in the screenshot below.

Also:  How to get ChatGPT to browse the web for free

Although ChatGPT can create content ready to be copied and pasted into a resume, you should tweak the text so it is personalized to your experiences and doesn't look like a chatbot wrote it.

Employers want to learn about what makes you unique. Without your assistance, the chatbot can only access generic content about your role. You can also use the  Custom Instructions  feature to share some details about your role and interests that ChatGPT can reference when outputting the text to give it a little more nuance.

4. Use ChatGPT to revamp your text

Whether you fill out the template yourself before using ChatGPT's assistance or have an existing resume you want to enhance, ChatGPT is a great resource for polishing up text.

All you have to do is copy and paste your text and ask ChatGPT to make it better.

Also: The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT and other interesting alternatives to try

For example, I asked ChatGPT, "Can you make this resume bullet sound better: 'I write stories about technology.'" Within seconds, it outputted an elaborate bullet point that incorporated a professional tone and made that simple sentence more complex, as seen in the screenshot above.

Once you get your result, you can always tell ChatGPT to tweak it further with prompts like, "Make it shorter" or "Can you include [additional details]?"

How much does it cost for ChatGPT to write my resume?

ChatGPT is currently free to use regardless of what type of writing you use it for, which includes resume-building assistance.

How can ChatGPT help me with my resume?

ChatGPT can generate text for different parts of your resume, including your professional summary and individual bullet points for each experience.

Also:  How to nail the 'Do you have any questions for me?' part of the interview

The chatbot can also help enhance your current resume by optimizing your text. If you have any questions about how to format your resume and what to include, ChatGPT can give you some answers.

What should I put in my resume?

Ideally, you want a resume to highlight all your career accomplishments. This can include any educational, professional, and leadership experiences that are meaningful to you. You should also include as much detail about your unique experiences to make you stand out from other applicants.

Trump to resume outdoor rallies with bulletproof glass

By Nicole Sganga

Updated on: August 15, 2024 / 8:05 PM EDT / CBS News

The U.S. Secret Service is arranging for former President Donald Trump to resume outdoor campaign rallies a month after a gunman targeted him at a rally in Pennsylvania .

The Secret Service plans to surround Trump's podium with bulletproof glass, according to two federal law enforcement officials.

While this measure is typically used to protect sitting presidents, the Secret Service is making an exception after the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally on July 13, when the gunman  took several shots at Trump, grazing his ear before a Secret Service sniper killed him.

The plan was first set into motion by then-Secret Service director Kim Cheatle in the immediate aftermath of the rally. The Secret Service typically pre-positions personnel around the country in battleground states so they can be within driving distance of campaign rallies, which enables faster transportation of the ballistic glass to events.

The Secret Service declined to comment on its reported plans.

Within weeks after the shooting, Trump vowed to continue appearing at outdoor rallies and said the Secret Service had " agreed to substantially step up " its operation. The Secret Service had already increased its security efforts around Trump — in fact, the Butler rally was the first event of the 2024 campaign where the agency's highly trained counter snipers were deployed to secure a campaign event for the former president.

But the event was plagued by security lapses, and in the wake of the attempt on Trump's life, Cheatle resigned . The acting Secret Service Ronald Rowe disclosed that Secret Service counter snipers did not have radio communications with local law enforcement that day. Instead, the agents relied on text messaging, with local Butler County tactical teams sending Secret Service snipers two pictures of Crooks via text message at 5:45 p.m., about 26 minutes before shots were fired.

The Department of Homeland Security is assisting the Secret Service in establishing a committee to explore the permanent creation of a uniform communication channel. This would enable the Secret Service, federal law enforcement officials and state and local law enforcement officials assisting the agency to radio one another with greater ease, allowing communication between law enforcement entities that typically transmit messages on separate frequencies.

The panel is still being assembled, with assistance from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and will be led by Heather Fong, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas' senior counselor for law enforcement and acting assistant secretary for the Office for State & Local Law Enforcement. Fong is also a former San Francisco chief of police.

Notably, Rowe has conceded that problems with communications among law enforcement agencies on July 13 delayed critical information from being relayed to the Secret Service as local law enforcement pursued the gunman in the minutes leading up to the shooting.
