Wii games for kids: The Nintendo Wii is more than just a gaming platform. It's a gaming platform designed for the kids of today just as the original NES was designed for kids of the 1980s and 90s. We take a look at some of the best Wii games for kids.

When the Nintendo Wii was first announced, I used to insist that it was a gaming platform designed for kids. It’s been a number of years since then and the games available on the platform are every bit as diverse as those who disagreed with me would come to expect. They were right — it’s not strictly for kids, but that doesn’t stop the Nintendo Wii from being the perfect gaming platform for kids.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii 

An old classic returns to the new (well, it’s old now) Nintendo Wii. It’s hard to go wrong with a game like the “New Super Mario Bros. Wii,” a game that delivers timeless gameplay with beefed up graphics, some of the most challenging levels a Mario game has seen to date and the best co-op the platform has to offer.  

Jump your way through dozens of missions as either Mario or Luigi and save Princess Peach from the likes of Bowser and his turtle minions.  

Super Smash Bros. Brawl 

Many kids love fighting games, but it’d be a mistake to let them get their hands on something like Mortal Kombat or Fight Night. With that in mind, Nintendo has “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” for the Wii. You can play as your favorite Nintendo character or even choose from a number of third-party characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Solid Snake.  

It offers all the fun and adrenaline-boosting intensity as any “real” fighting game, but with much more interesting characters and bloodless gameplay. 

Mario Kart Wii 

“Mario Kart Wii” isn’t exactly “Gran Turismo 5,” but that shouldn’t matter when what it offers is some of the most fun you can have racing against your friends. The Mario Kart series has seen release on every other Nintendo console, and this version is no less enjoyable than the others. More than just a mere port, “Mario Kart Wii” features the addition of new motorcycles and an online mode that allows you to go head to head against racers all over the world.  

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga 

There's a lot to be said about the Star Wars franchise but one thing that will always remain true is the fact that Star Wars will remain an eternal part of our childhood whether we were born in the 70s, 80s, or 90s.

With that in mind, the creators of "LEGO Star Wars" have brought the timeless franchise into LEGO brick form for every game console, including the Nintendo Wii. Through the game, kids today will be able to experience the excitement and exhilaration of the original trilogy interactively. With multiplayer support, they'll even be able to play the game with their siblings (if they have any) or their parents, who will undoubtedly enjoy the game as much as they do. What's not to like?

Donkey Kong Country Returns 

One of the most sought after releases for the Nintendo Wii is the new “Donkey Kong Country Returns,” a remake based on the classic DKC series. The new game sees the return of mine cart levels, vine swinging and collecting bananas and the golden letters that spell the word “KONG.” As a “2.5D” game, DKCR combines 2D gameplay with 3D graphics. 

Players take on the role of the titular Donkey Kong with Diddy Kong riding upon his back. Together, they must retrieve bananas stolen by the Tiki Tak Tribe (characters who look like Tiki heads) who have since replaced the Kremlings in the original game. In multiplayer, the second player controls Diddy Kong. The game can be played with both the Wii Remote or with the classic controller.  

Boom Blox Bash Party 

When Steven Spielberg surprised the game industry by saying that he was going to be designing a game, his announcement met with a mixed reception. Any doubts about his ability as a game designer was soon put to rest with the release of “Boom Blox” for the Wii, a game where players knocked down blocks of towers in a manner that exercised their creativity. 

“Boom Blox Bash Party” is the sequel to that game and it offers the same innovative experiences of its predecessor with even more levels (up to 400) of block bashing mayhem.   

Okami 

Originally made for the PlayStation 2, this undervalued title has found its way to the Nintendo Wii as one of its greatest games.  

You take on the role of the wolf Amaterasu and romp around a woodcut, watercolor styled sumi-e illustrated environment. The game is a mix of action and platform with puzzles to solve along the way. In “Okami” Amaterasu has to battle all kinds of strange creatures and earn money for purchasing better equipment and items needed to solve puzzles.  

“Okami” for the Wii plays better with the Nintendo WiiMote than it ever did with a regular controller thanks to the game’s drawing mechanic via the “Celestial Brush”. In this mode, players can pause the game to call up a canvas they can draw on to summon spells that provide players with an edge in both battles and puzzles.  

Kirby’s Epic Yarn 

“Kirby’s Epic Yarn” has one of the most unique aesthetics to ever feature in a game. Instead of featuring pixelated sprites or a dirt-smeared warzone, all of “Kirby’s Epic Yarn” takes place on a patchwork collage replete with embroidery, buttons and quild. Kirby’s metamorphosis takes on new forms as he can turn into a variety of string objects.  

Although not originally developed as a Kirby title, “Kirby’s Epic Yarn” feels like it was cut from the same cloth as any of the originals.  

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess 

This list would be incomplete without the inclusion of a single Zelda title. Originally intended for the GameCube, Twilight Princess was brought over to the Nintendo Wii with full WiiMote functionality. Although gamers may prefer to use the classic Nintendo controller to play this one, the game is no less enjoyable on the motion control device.  

While few games could ever live up to the standards set by Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess manages to hold its own superbly and succeeds as a Zelda title–delivering great adventure and excellent combat. It’s a somewhat darker game with more mature aesthetics by comparison to the previous Zelda titles, but it feels like a Zelda game all the same. “Twilight Princess” is a tremendous game in its own right and gamers both young and old can’t afford to give this title a amiss.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 

Arguably one of the best games on the Nintendo Wii, “Super Mario Galaxy 2” looks and feels almost exactly like its predecessor. That’s not to say that the game is simply more of the same, however. It’s “Super Mario Galaxy” done right, with its gravity-based gameplay polished close to perfection. Like the first game, Mario must manipulate gravity wells around planets to solve difficult puzzles, but with the addition of new powerups like the Rock Mushroom and Cloud Flower, which have to be used in the greatly diversified challenges offered by the game. In addition to the new powerups, the lovable green dinosaur Yoshi also makes an appearance.  

All in all, “Super Mario Galaxy 2” is one of the defining games of the Nintendo Wii platform. Kids will look back on it years from now and see it as the game that defined their childhood

I also give you the best Wii game for four-year-olds although they are already considered preschoolers. The reason is that the preferences overlap between these age groups. Very much depends on an individual child.

The LEGO series of games from Traveler’s Tales has been around for quite some time. If there’s a kid-friendly movie franchise out there, you can bet that a LEGO game is not too far behind. 

This particular game is one of the best on the Wii, especially for younger players. The game itself takes the Harry Potter story and strips it of the things that might be a bit much for the average toddler. That’s right – less death, fewer scary monsters, and no discussions about abusive aunts and uncles!

Instead, you get a hilarious little story with which your toddler can interact.

This game is probably better for ages four to five, though, as it does have some platforming sections and some of the controls do require precision.

If your child loves Harry Potter or LEGO, this might be the best game with which to start him or her off. It’s not perfect, but it will allow your child to have a great time.

In short, it’s perfect for younger kids. The bad news, though, is that this game might not be right for the very little ones. It’s more a mature four-year-old game because the platforming can get difficult in the higher levels.

Even with that said, the game does a good job of moving kids into ‘real’ video games. It’s just a hop skip from this one to platformers like New Super Mario Brothers, so don’t overlook the character. If Rayman Origins seems like it’s easy for your child, definitely consider jumping up to a harder tier of difficulty. If it’s too tough, you might be looking at video games a little too early for your child.

Mario Kart Wii is probably the easiest iteration of the game to grasp, with motion controls that make it easy for even a little one to understand. While some of the courses can be a bit tough, it’s still an excellent game for any child who is still learning how to play. Yes, the blue shell is still in this one.

Have fun losing races to your toddler who manages to get all the best items on the last lap.

Less a full game than a collection of mini-games, this one is the best showcase for motion controls that Nintendo ever made. It’s an absolute joy to play and something that your toddler is going to love.

If your toddler can swing a remote, he or she can play this game. Outside of menus, he or she won’t even have to press a button. Games like boxing and baseball are the easiest, I’ve found that kids have a weird tendency to love bowling more than anything else.

You’re absolutely not going to go wrong with this game collection.

• Games are and short and sometimes there’s too much repetition so your toddler may get bored

The playground is what you get when you take the concepts behind Wii Sports and add a schoolyard twist. A favorite among the pre-school crowd, this game adds favorites like tetherball and dodgeball to the mix while still sticking with basic motion controls.

As a parent, it’s hard to see this game as anything other than an expanded version of Wii Sports. Slightly older toddlers adore the game, though, mostly because of the setting. It makes them feel like they are playing on the playground at school and it’s hard to argue with that kind of immersion.

Teaching basketball to kids in the US is becoming a bit muddled, and the NBA is seeking solutions

Victor Wembanyama’s on-court warmup session before games when he played in France would last for about an hour. It consisted of plenty of stretching, lots of passing and dribbling drills, then a little bit of shooting.

The basics. The skills. Nothing else.

“It’s what you’re taught to bring to the game,” he said at the time, a year or so before the San Antonio Spurs made the French star the No. 1 pick in last year’s NBA draft .

Taught in some places, perhaps . Taught everywhere, not so much. There are many in the NBA — from Commissioner Adam Silver on down the line — sounding a bit of an alarm about how the development of young players in the U.S. differs from the process in other parts of the world, and how the model that seems to focus more on playing than practicing maybe isn’t the best method.

This year’s draft will once again reflect the shifting tide.

French stars Alex Sarr and Zaccharie Risacher won’t have to wait long to hear their names called during the NBA draft that starts on Wednesday night, and they might even be the first two picks overall. Sure, they’ve played a lot of games. But they’re in this position because most scouts deem them the most NBA-ready in the class, with games that are extremely well-rounded — a product of how footwork, passing, shooting, dribbling, the fundamentals were prioritized over highlight-reel moments.

“Those guys start playing so young, and more importantly, they’re not just playing when they’re young — they’re being taught when they’re young,” Denver coach Michael Malone said this past season, when asked why Balkan players — like the Nuggets star, Nikola Jokic — just seem more adept at skills like passing. “There’s a big difference. In the United States, AAU basketball, guys are playing a lot of basketball, but are they being taught how to play?”

It is the question that everyone is asking. USA Basketball is trying to find an answer, along with the NBA. And it’s not a new thing, either: longtime coach and now television analyst Stan Van Gundy says the problem partly stems from how winning is overemphasized at the youth level.

“Quite frankly, if you look around, we’re failing pretty badly in this country as a whole in teaching people basketball skills,” Van Gundy said. “You all notice it if who watch the NBA, because there’s a huge difference in just the skill level of the players coming from Europe and what we have here in terms of their ability to pass the ball and shoot the ball. We can’t even produce enough people who can do those things here that we’ve got to go across and try to find people who can do them. We’re not developing skills here.”

By the way, Van Gundy didn’t say those words this week or last week or last month. He said them when he was coaching the Miami Heat — two decades ago.

“You are kind of scratching at something that is a conversation a lot of NBA people are having right now,” Orlando Magic President Jeff Weltman said. “I think everybody is looking at youth basketball right now. There are very different models that you can pursue. ... It is something we need to continue to analyze and measure as we go forward. The league is changing and how do we recalibrate that toward the youth programs?”

Some coaches, at the youth level, say the answer is simple: It’s on them to do better.

Antoine Thompson is the boys coach at Stony Point High School in Round Rock, Texas, and his program reached the Class 6A state final this past spring. At Stony Point, fundamentals are paramount and it shows in the won-lost record — 38-2 this past season.

His solution: more practices, less games.

“We’ve gotten away from the old lineage way of teaching the game, starting with the very fundamentals, then practicing the game with a team concept. That’s gone out the window,” Thompson said. “And it’s getting bad because now it’s starting at the grassroots level and that used to be where the game was taught. We’re ignoring that now.”

Thompson points to Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic as the example. Doncic has been a pro since he was basically 14, part of the Real Madrid system before coming to the NBA. But how he got there is the key, Thompson said.

“He was playing in a club where the club was structured to teach the game of basketball before playing the game of basketball and we’ve inverted that here,” Thompson said “Now we play the game of basketball — but we don’t teach the game of basketball anymore.”

Maybe that will change. The NBA is thinking it might.

The league and USA Basketball are working together — former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is involved as well — to see what can be done. Some countries require all coaches at the youth level to be licensed and pass an aptitude test of sorts; that might not necessarily be realistic in a country as big as the U.S., but there’s always a better way.

“We think there’s definitely ways to improve the system,” Silver said.

The Duke of Sussex will be honored for his work with the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry will be honored at the 2024 ESPY Awards, which honors the best athletes and sports figures.

The Duke of Sussex will receive The Pat Tillman Award for Service, to recognize his work as the founder of the Invictus Games, which has hosted Olympic-style competitions for wounded service members since 2014.

"This one is for our entire service community," Harry said after learning of the upcoming honor.

Other sports greats who will be honored include former NFL player Steve Gleason, who will receive The Arthur Ashe Award for Courage for his years documenting his experience with ALS, and University of South Carolina basketball coach Dawn Staley, who will receive The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, for her contributions to women's basketball.

"It's our privilege to recognize three incredible individuals - Steve Gleason, Dawn Staley and Prince Harry," said Kate Jackson, the vice president of production at ESPN. "These honorees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalized and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity and perseverance, and we're thrilled to celebrate them at The 2024 ESPYS."
