A Quiet Place: Day One Review

Pretty much the best case scenario for a prequel..

A Quiet Place: Day One opens in theaters Friday, June 28.

It’s impressive just how great A Quiet Place: Day One is. Not that the first two Quiet Place movies weren’t good – they’re both strong films in their own right. But this spinoff/prequel to those earlier films introduces new characters in a new setting that successfully elevates both the tension and the emotional impact of John Krasinski’s nearly dialogue-free horror films. The result is the series’ best movie to date.

As the title implies, Day One brings us back to the very beginning, to the day sightless alien creatures with extremely sharp hearing first crash down to Earth. Yes, we saw some of this invasion play out in A Quiet Place Part II’s harrowing prologue, but the big difference here is a change of scenery: Where that sequence was set in a small town in Upstate New York, Day One takes place right in the middle of Manhattan. That change gives the action a different feel, which only expands as the movie charts the first steps toward the post-apocalyptic world established in the first two films.

A Quiet Place: Day One Gallery

Our main character this time out is Samira (Lupita Nyong'o), who’s in town on a day trip during a time of personal crisis. As fate would have it, she won’t be catching a bus home that afternoon, due to the nightmarish creatures who show up and mercilessly wipe out any humans they hear in their vicinity. Nyong'o is a proven talent – she has an Oscar for a reason. And yet, perhaps because she’s only made a handful of movies since her breakout performance in 12 Years a Slave , every new role she plays feels like a reminder of what a terrific actor she is and how effortlessly she holds the screen. The opening scenes of A Quiet Place: Day One establish what Samira’s life is like and the impulsive hostility she’s sometimes capable of – an efficient explanation of what causes her behavior. But it’s Nyong'o’s performance that does the heavy lifting of quickly connecting us to her, so that we’re invested even before the world starts ending.

As the survivors of the aliens’ initial attack process what happened and how quiet they need to be to avoid detection, Samira finds a new focus. She knows exactly where in the city she wants to travel. Her reasoning becomes clear as time goes on, and by that point, writer-director Michael Sarnoski (taking over for Krasinski, who returns as executive producer and receives a “story by” credit) has fully immersed us in this story, grounding an outrageous premise in a relatable emotional core.

What's the best horror movie of 2024 so far?

Sarnoski pulled off a similar trick in his first feature, 2021’s Pig , turning the story of Nicolas Cage tracking down his stolen pet foraging pig into something so empathetic and soulful. The other Quiet Place movies have powerful, compassionate moments of their own, but Day One manages to dig deeper. In a film that only sparingly uses dialogue, Sarnoski and his talented cast manage to convey a lot through brief yet meaningful glances and small observations. The prequel underlines the awful, nearly impossible plight of its protagonists. Could you truly stay silent while moving fast? Or if you were in terrible pain? Or if you were just plain terrified? There are several wrenching moments throughout that demonstrate just what an ordeal this would be, and why so many wouldn’t survive it.

This is especially true once Samira meets British law student Eric (Joseph Quinn). Barely holding it together, Eric latches on to Samira. He sheepishly follows her, whether she likes it or not, and their dynamic adds more heart to Day One. We see how Eric and Samira rapidly forge a real connection, even though they can’t really speak to one another. Quinn is wonderful at displaying Eric’s sweetness and vulnerability through his actions, rather than any big monologue, and he proves to be the perfect scene partner for Nyong'o.

I’ve spent a lot of time talking about the emotional components of A Quiet Place: Day One, so I should also note that this movie is truly scary and often intense as hell. (It gets an extra jolt in IMAX, where the sound design genuinely made me feel like I was in the middle of a city under siege.) There are terrific scenes throughout that ratchet up the tension, such as when our heroes must travel through a flooded subway tunnel. When the aliens attack, it’s brutal and memorable – this is one of the harder-edged PG-13 films in recent memory. Sarnoski gets a lot of visual mileage out of the creatures swarming the streets of New York and scurrying across skyscrapers, which is especially impressive considering how many other monster movies have used the city as their backdrop. There’s a genuine dread that sells this as a believable look at how people would react to a situation so beyond comprehension and so out of their control.

Day One is mainly a two-hander between Nyong'o and Quinn, though Alex Wolff (who worked with Sarnoski on Pig) does good work in a smaller role. Djimon Hounsou also pops up to reprise his role as Henri from A Quiet Place Part II – the only real attempt to establish more connective tissue to the larger Quiet Place franchise. It’s fan service, but to the film’s credit, there isn’t any eye-rolling foreshadowing of what Henri’s future holds. (You can absolutely enjoy Day One without any prior knowledge of A Quiet Place.)

There’s one other significant character: Frodo, Samira’s therapy cat. As a cat lover, I was nervous for Frodo from the get-go – after all, this is a film series that kicks off with the death of a young boy. I won’t say whether Frodo makes it out alive or not, but I will say that the two cats playing him, Nico and Schnitzel, give excellent performances. Granted, the extent to which Frodo never meows or cries out – no matter what is occurring around him – requires a tremendous suspension of disbelief. Look, I have cats, and they truly won’t shut up when they’re hungry. But Frodo is just built different, okay?

A Quiet Place: Day One shows that the horror franchise can thrive without its core characters and can go even further in terms of how impactful its stories can be. Day One combines expertly done moments of terror and tension combined with a story about two people it’s easy to care for, as we watch them forge a relatable human connection while trying to evade freaky alien monsters with really strong hearing. It’s both the best A Quiet Place movie to date and one of the best movies I’ve seen in 2024.

A Quiet Place: Day One finds touching moments between the silent scares

The action starts over in New York City, led by great performances by Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn.

One of the weirder things about living in New York City during the coronavirus pandemic was how the outdoor advertising froze. On the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a billboard for A Quiet Place Part II stayed up for months, even though the movie never opened and all theaters were closed. This forgotten curiosity from a difficult period — as well as many of the troubling emotions I felt living through the 9/11 attacks — came to mind during the latest entry in this alien invasion franchise, A Quiet Place: Day One . As with the others in the series, this is not an upbeat picture, but it is effective and unsettling without being too gory. 

As the title suggests, this entry is a rewind back to when the nasty and aurally sensitive creatures first invaded Earth. We saw this in the prologue of Part II , but that was tucked away in a little town. What, you may have wondered, would it have been like in a place that, as the opening titles inform us, hums at a continuous 90 decibels, equivalent to a constant scream?

Writer-director Michael Sarnoski has his PG-13 cake and eats it too during the initial assault by suggesting mass carnage, but with so much smoke and debris, he doesn’t have to show too much. Our eyes and ears on the event, Sam ( Lupita Nyong’o ), is also knocked unconscious pretty quickly. When she wakes up, the survivors huddling in a theater have already surmised that the monsters are drawn to noise, so it’s important to keep mum. (It’s not too long before Sam puts together that louder noises take precedence over quieter ones, so you can talk behind cascading water, as John Krasinski did back in the first movie.) From there, it’s a lot of crouching and freezing in place whenever the baddies are near, a similar move from the other movies, but if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Sam came to New York on a group outing (to a symbolically resonant puppet show) with a hospice facility. She’s in the final stages of terminal cancer and is understandably sour about her condition. Her prime motivator in coming to New York, however, is to grab one last slice from Patsy’s famous pizzeria in East Harlem (having been there, I understand.) Once she realizes she’s on borrowed time as it is, but without access to her pain meds, her final quest is to risk it all to have one last bite of pie from this legendary spot. (Okay, we’ll learn that her emotional attachment to this place is more than gustatory, but let’s leave some mystery for now.) 

Joining Sam on this unexpected journey to her potential doom is her fluffy and extremely camera-ready cat, Frodo . (I suppose it’s the Ear of Sauron causing troubles here.) Also along for the ride is a friendly but a little skittish English dude named Eric (Joseph Quinn) who doesn’t really know anyone in New York City and is understandably freaked out about all the vicious aliens that keep leaping down from surrounding buildings and killing people. The two quickly form a bond based on pure terror (and not much talking) that is the heart of the movie. That’s a real credit to these two performers and their marvelously expressive faces, telegraphing what in other films would require whole blocks of dialogue with just their eyes. 

Another good thing about Day One is that you’ll get a really good look at the aliens crawling all over Manhattan from some sky-view shots. We still don’t really know why they want to kill everyone (are they eating the people? I’ve seen three of these movies and still don’t know) but the fear that even the slightest sound will summon them from anywhere is even scarier in the urban environment than in the previous installments out in the sticks. A quick shot of Frodo the cat chasing a mouse implies that, hey, mass murder is just in the nature of these interplanetary freaks.

For any New Yorkers watching, however, some of the movie’s effectiveness will be kneecapped by some of the fakest- looking New York stand-ins you’ve seen in a while. (With the exception of a few shots, production was held on soundstages in the U.K. and in London.) It’s not a dealbreaker — not even using the wrong font on signs for the subway — but it is a little annoying. It just makes me respect movies and shows shot in Atlanta or Toronto that don’t pretend to be somewhere else. 

But I get it. It had to be New York because the city is an island, and, as was revealed in Part II , the beasties can’t swim. (Indeed, Djimon Hounsou’s character from that film appears here, and we get to see part of a story he told.) More importantly, though, is evoking some of the iconography from 9/11. This isn’t uncharted ground — War of the Worlds and Cloverfield have this pretty well covered, in addition to the first few episodes of the Battlestar Galactica reboot — but it’s a rich vein for a good filmmaker to tap into. And Sarnoski does this in ways that feel earned, not exploitative. 

His previous movie, 2021’s Pig , was another one that could have easily taken a cheap route. That film starred Nicolas Cage as a reclusive ex-gourmet chef living in the woods with his prize truffle-hunting pig, who must face his past demons when his pig is kidnapped. In lesser hands it would have relied on “crazy Nick Cage” and not been the tender (albeit strange) drama it was. 

You can see this same sensitivity with performers in A Quiet Place: Day One . Nyong’o walks from Chinatown to Harlem for a slice of pizza even though aliens are killing everyone in the city. On paper, that’s idiotic. But somehow, this movie ends up being quite touching in between scenes when it’s making you jump. Grade: B+

Every human being requires a quiet place to spend some time occasionally, driven by an innate desire for savoring solitude and tranquility, minus the humdrum of daily life. My philosophies are more attuned to these lines of thought. My go-to place is the little patch of undisturbed green beside a small pond in our locality. Amidst the concrete jungle, this oasis still exists, for which I feel blessed. This is where I retreat whenever I wish to spend some time alone with my thoughts and far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is a little bench here where I sit and listen to music. 

Sometimes, I channel my pent-up feelings into creating sketches of the scenery around me. Sometimes I sit here just to gather my thoughts, especially when I have to take a big decision. The place has grown on me, and I have spent hours contemplating here. My family members know about my preferred quiet place near home, and they gracefully give me the space I desire, minus interruptions. 

I find myself more creative and collected when I am at this spot. It helps me get away from distractions and serves as a regular respite from the sundry affairs of life. As Patricia Highsmith rightly said, “My imagination functions much better when I don’t have to speak to people.” An occasional passer-by is all I get at times. I genuinely enjoy my little hideout in the heart of the city and feel grateful for how it rejuvenates me both inside and out.

Being a man of science, I am more inclined toward quieter places, enabling me to focus and develop my theories. I firmly believe in the peerless words of Aldous Huxley, who stated that “the more powerful and original a mind, the more it will be inclined towards the religion of solitude.” I am devoted to my passion which has now become my profession. Hence, I have chosen an attic on the top floor as my study, research, and relaxation area. 

The room contains shelves of neatly stacked books and periodicals, my laboratory and research equipment, my computer and other digital equipment, and my guitar and music system for de-stressing once in a while. The best part is that I can always take a break and take a quick stroll on the adjoining terrace of my home. This is a great stress-buster, especially when I am awake in the wee hours, working on experiments and research papers. This room reflects my personality and preferences. 

I rarely allow others, including my family members, into my preferred quiet place at home. They are also supportive enough to give me the space I need for analytical thinking. I also retreat to my room whenever I wish to practice my guitar skills, sing a song, blast some music, or simply think about something. It is my happy place and a room that gives me comfort. I have made my biggest life decisions here while having worked on some of my most radical theories. If I ever have to leave my city, I will miss my quiet place the most.

A Quiet Place: Day One review: a shockingly tense and moving sci-fi prequel

The transition from independent film to blockbuster moviemaking isn’t always kind to directors. In Hollywood’s current, franchise-obsessed era, that’s become especially true. While plenty of filmmakers have made the leap in recent years, only a handful of them (ex. Jordan Peele, Greta Gerwig) have been able to successfully bring their own distinct voices and perspectives to the franchise or blockbuster movies they’ve made. There were, therefore, reasons to wonder whether Pig director Michael Sarnoski would really be able to deliver  A Quiet Place: Day One as a film that actually felt like it was made by him, rather than by committee.

Lo and behold, that’s exactly what Sarnoski has done. The filmmaker’s follow-up to his acclaimed, Nicolas Cage-led 2021 directorial debut is a heartfelt, uncompromising thriller that frequently feels more like a grounded relationship drama than an apocalyptic alien invasion movie. With it, Sarnoski has effectively added more tools to his toolkit without sacrificing the aspects of his filmmaking that made Pig not only stand out from the rest of 2021’s movies but actually seem like the announcement of a new, truly promising writer-director.

Set before the main events of its franchise’s first two installments, A Quiet Place: Day One follows Sam (Lupita Nyong’o), a sickly woman who accepts an invitation from Reuben (Alex Wolff), a kind hospice worker, to take a quick day trip with a few of her fellow patients into New York City. While there, Sam’s plan to buy one last slice of authentic NYC pizza is turned upside down by the sudden, violent invasion of blind aliens that kill any human they hear. Trapped in one of the loudest cities in the world, Sam is forced to decide where her priorities lie as she and her scene-stealer of a cat, Frodo, try to make it across the Big Apple without making any discernible noises or dying.

Along the way, the pair are joined by Eric ( Stranger Things season 4 breakout star Joseph Quinn ), a British law student who — after nearly dying in a flooded subway tunnel — latches onto Sam and Frodo like they’re his life preservers. As Sam and Eric slowly grow closer together throughout Day One ‘s second half, the film inevitably calls to mind other postapocalyptic blockbusters like Children of Men and Logan , both of which similarly center around protagonists whose reluctance to connect with anyone else is gradually eroded. While the arc of Sam and Eric’s relationship is one that viewers have seen before, though, Day One makes it work.

Quinn and Nyong’o each give profoundly likable, charismatic performances as two characters whose lives could not be more different. Whereas Sam has seemingly little left in front of her when Day One begins, Eric is still waiting for his life to start. This difference allows the film’s leads to simultaneously complement and stand apart from each other. Quinn’s performance is one of rattled nerves and quiet disbelief; Nyong’o’s conveys the deeper, more resigned pain of someone who has had to come to terms with her world ending long before it did for anyone else. When Eric whispers, “This wasn’t part of the plan,” during a memorable scene around Day One ‘s midpoint, Sarnoski mines every ounce of emotion he can out of a subsequent cut to Nyong’o’s face as she silently responds with a look of pure, heartbroken understanding.

It is, unsurprisingly, in A Quiet Place: Day One ‘s quieter (no pun intended) scenes of connection and reflection that Sarnoski shines the most as a director. Working again with his Pig cinematographer, Pat Scola, Sarnoski hinges many of Day One ‘s biggest scenes on close-ups that understand just how powerfully expressive Quinn and Nyong’o are as performers. The film, consequently, emerges as the rare sci-fi blockbuster that isn’t oblivious to the power of the human face. Visually, Sarnoski brings his character-first approach to both Day One ‘s less-explosive scenes and its biggest set pieces, some of which are less nerve-shredding than you’d hope but all of which manage to beautifully use simple reaction shots to generate considerable levels of tension.

The film’s script, which Sarnoski penned alone from a story by him and A Quiet Place director John Krasinski, manages to find a mostly satisfying balance of action and human drama. Its back half, specifically, finds a pleasing rhythm that Sarnoski and editors Gregory Plotkin and Andrew Mondshein do their best to maintain for as long and consistently as they can. Sometimes, their efforts to do so lead to action sequences, such as a life-threatening detour taken by Quinn’s Eric to save Sam’s cat from an alien nest, that feel shoehorned in for the sake of briefly generating tension. However, the film doesn’t make this mistake enough times to result in it overstaying its welcome.

A Quiet Place: Day One sticks to its lean 99-minute runtime and yet still manages to organically build to a conclusion that is as emotionally cathartic as it is narratively satisfying. In doing so, the film demonstrates — just in case it wasn’t already clear — a firm understanding on Sarnoski’s part of what ultimately matters most, even in a movie as big and high-concept as his latest. Day One is an often stunningly made prequel that doesn’t concern itself with tedious tasks like further fleshing out the details of its franchise’s dystopian future or making unnecessary references to its two predecessors.

The film isn’t interested in anything other than its characters’ respective stories, and that allows it to achieve a profundity that is both unexpected and welcome. Not only is it the rare prequel that actually deserves to exist, but whether it’s making you jump in fear or cry, A Quiet Place: Day One has the power to take your breath away.

I have farmland in the hinterland of my city. It is far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That is why I get the much needed peace and tranquility over there.

During my childhood, my dad purchased this farmland to grow organic vegetables for our family.

Every weekend I visit this place to break the monotony of the urban lifestyle.

What do you do there?

Whenever I go there, I indulge in a myriad of activities. Firstly I spend some time doing farming. Although I am not an expert at it, I am well versed with the basics. During this activity, I get into a state of flow, and my time passes quickly.

How did you know it?

This studio belongs to Mr Masha Ali, a renowned Punjabi singer. He is my bosom friend and my neighbour too. He had opened it two years back and invited me as a guest at the time of its inauguration.

It’s a recording studio, so it’s remain occupied six days a week. However, every Sunday, there is a break. I have made it a part of my routine to visit this place every Sunday.

Being a voracious reader, I am always in search of a quiet place to read.

Recently, I found a place conducive to reading because of the serenity inside it.

The place is the library near my residence. It’s newly opened.

My mathematics teacher recommended this place to me.

Every day, I spend 5-6 hours at this place.

Initially, the primary purpose of going to this place was self-study. However, with time I have widened my friend circle. So after finishing my studies, I engage in a group discussion. Apart from this, I eat mouth-watering delicacies in the canteen.

The prominent reason for liking this place is the calmness offered by it.

Due to fierce competition these days, students need to carve out a niche for themself to gain success. And to achieve this aim, they need to work with determination, dedication and discipline.

For such a high-level preparation, a calm place is a must.

And I get the much-needed calmness and composure at this place. Because the management is strict and they allow only serious readers to occupy the space. All those people who engage in unnecessary gossips do not get permission to sit here.

This library is always full of ardent readers who always remain in a state of flow while studying. Upon watching them, I also get motivated.

In the last two months, there is a paradigm shift in my knowledge. Due to this reason, I have achieved higher grades in my recent tests.

'A Quiet Place: Day One' review: Prequel shrinks movie's silent world

Writer-director michael sarnoski takes reins from john krasinski in series' third entry..

In "A Quiet Place: Day One," the alien beings who really don't appreciate noise arrive here on Earth, the beginning of sending humans scattering, eventually, to the desolate surroundings we saw in 2018's "A Quiet Place" and its 2020 sequel.

We don't learn anything about their purpose here or from whence they came, or why, since they're obviously fans of silence, they chose to embark on New York City of all places. Rather, this tightly controlled thriller focuses on the first person experience of one New Yorker, who already has enough on her hands without an invasion of quiet-seeking alien monsters ruining her day.

That's Sam (Lupita Nyong'o), who is living out her final days in a hospice facility, waning away with terminal cancer, but still spunky enough to let everyone around her know how much she doesn't appreciate the way they smell. She's given a chance to go into New York City one last time — her last visit was supposed to be her last visit, she tells Reuben (Alex Wolff), who is organizing the trip — and off she goes, hoping to stop off at Patsy's, her favorite Harlem pizza spot, for one last slice.

It's a bad day to be in New York, it turns out. Or anywhere really, since the aliens make their sudden, unannounced descent and wreak havoc on not just the Big Apple, but anywhere where there's sound above a whisper. (So everywhere, really.) The city scene quickly descends into chaos, as people are forced to quickly learn that sound, any sound at all, is a no-no, and there's an extremely slight margin of error.

With her trusty cat by her side — this quiet place is no place for barking dogs, unfortunately — Sam navigates her way through the madness, essentially on her tiptoes. She's joined by Eric (Joseph Quinn), a doe-eyed stranger who clings to her like a lost dog, who tries to help her find her way to Harlem, where her beloved Patsy's awaits, even though she knows no one is going to be there doling out pies.

Writer-director Michael Sarnoski (2021's "Pig," starring Nic Cage) fashions this prequel as a soulful personal journey, set against a backdrop of pure chaos. He's not interested in the story's larger implications, but rather in telling Sam's story, using what we know about the "Quiet Place" universe as a backdrop.

Within that framework, "Day One" is mostly effective. There are some quibbles about the rules of sound and how much one can make without attracting the attention of the long-legged, highly irritable and utterly unforgiving monsters. (Would using the backdrop of thunder to let out a cathartic scream really be worth the risk?) And the Eric character is a bit of a wet blanket, and it's questionable how much tolerance Sam would really have for him.

But "Day One" is notable in the way it shrinks rather than expands the "Quiet Place" story. It feels like a bottle episode in a TV series, a one-off side story rather than a piece of opportunistic franchise expansion. For that, it deserves a tiny amount of applause, or at least a small, silent nod of appreciation.

And depending on what events I partake in, every trip holds its own fascination.

Normally, to burn up my energy and enjoy the sensation of sweat soaking my clothes and being physically exhausted, I would go trekking in the wild.This makes me feel alive again and rejuvenated. Sometimes, extreme sports like water sliding or cliff jumping are my favourites when I feel like pushing myself to the limit. Such kinds of entertainment require a good spirit of health and adventure, so they’re not for everyone.Every time I visit it, I usually spend 3 days in Alberta, and although it’s only a short time, I feel some of the burdens I have on my shoulder are swept away and I’m ready to face whatever comes next.

Silence Is Golden: A Visual Analysis of A Quiet Place

A horror film is a lot like bleu cheese. You either love it or you hate it. There is rarely ever an in-between. Of those people who do enjoy horror, some watch it purely for the thrill of the scare and the adrenaline rush that keeps your heart pumping and your muscles tense. Others, however, watch horror for the plot and the bone-chilling backstory that messes with your mind and makes you think. Whether you associate with the former or the latter, the 2018 film A Quiet Place has what you are looking for. It has jump-scares, terrifying monsters, and life-or-death odds, but it also has deeper themes interwoven into its gripping plot. Many acclaim the film for its strong portrayal of parental love, the sacrifices that accompany parenting, and the great fears every parent has for their children. Others find feminist ideas about strength and matriarchy in the main female characters. While both of these themes and others are present during the film, the entire plot also encompasses a compelling and overarching message about silence. A Quiet Place combines elements of modern horror with minimal dialogue in a way that emphasizes the art of listening and the value of meaningful communication in the midst of a society that is consumed by countless voices and opinions.

In multiple scenes throughout A Quiet Place , we are given glimpses of media that point toward its questionable role in our society as an outlet for noise. When the characters are seen walking through the abandoned town, newspapers are blowing around among the garbage and other abandoned items on the sidewalks. Instead of just being placed there as a filler or thoughtless prop, these papers add to the underlying plot. A few minutes into the first scene, a newspaper blows open and the front page is visible for a moment. It reads "It's Sound!" in large letters, referring to the realization that the creatures hunt using sound. Here, only a single, silent form of media is surviving in a world where noise is deadly. This hints at the notion that modern forms of media, which are often loud and overbearing, are not as important as they may seem. In an additional scene, we see a strategy room of sorts with a wall of snowy TVs. The appearance of these signal-less TVs shows us that media as we know it today is non-existent in this post-apocalyptic world, while the appearance of the newspapers shows that only a simplistic form of "old-school" media can still manage to survive. When compared with our society today, where we see the media's influence in everything we do, these small scenes beg the question: "What is the real importance of the media?" Today's media is constantly speaking out and adding noise to our lives, whether we want it to or not. When it was simply composed of journalism and newspapers, the media started out much quieter, solely speaking to audiences that wanted to listen. However, the dysfunctional examples of media in the film suggest that the modern media's booming voice is not as important as we may believe, and it may be distracting us from what really matters in the world around us.

In addition to this criticism of deafening media, we can see the representation of the creatures throughout A Quiet Place as yet another archetype for the media-encroached society as it stands today. These creatures have only one acute sense, hearing, and that is the only way they are able to hunt. In this way, they "feed off" of noise in a very literal sense. From the beginning of the film, the creatures seem to be unbeatable, with no small sound getting past their supernatural ears. In a similar but theoretical way to that of the creatures, society also feeds off of noise. Speaking out with one's opinions and beliefs is an inherently powerful thing, just as the creatures are all-powerful throughout the movie. However, these voices and opinions tend to build on each other, answering and arguing with one another until they reach a deafening pitch. By the ending scene of the film, the creatures' weakness is discovered, and it proves to be the same thing that has allowed them to thrive throughout the course of the movie: their sense of hearing. Too high of a pitch, like that created by Regan's malfunctioning hearing aid, is extremely painful to the creatures, debilitating them long enough for the Abbotts to overtake and kill them. Today's examples of heated social media arguments, flashy accusations, and fake news are representative of this dangerously high pitch of noise. Just like the destruction of the creatures, the same noise that society feeds on today may result in its ultimate demise and a state of chaos, if the frequency is allowed to climb any higher.

Another way in which A Quiet Place challenges societal norms with silence is through the eyes, or more literally the ears, of Regan, the daughter of the Abbott family, who can experience the world in ways others deafened by noise cannot. A short time into the movie, viewers are given clues that lead to an important discovery: Regan is deaf. This revelation adds a whole new layer to the plot of the story, while at the same time it lends a new respect to Regan's character. She is tasked with surviving in a world where noise means death, while not knowing what makes noise in the first place. In this way, we see the plot taking on a theme concerning disability in society. Regan portrays the immense difficulties many disabled people have to endure, and she exemplifies the misconceptions many have about the capabilities of this group of people. In an early scene, Regan is shown as irresponsible, and perhaps even culpable for her brother's death, when she gives him a toy that his parents had taken away from him. The toy makes noise, so their parents could only view it as a source of danger. Regan, on the other hand, sees a different perspective because she cannot hear it; she sees her brother's happiness in relation to the toy. In this way, Regan cannot be blamed completely for her actions because she saw a different side of the situation. In a similar way, the movie shows later on that the disabled can be better enabled than any "normal" person to take on certain situations. To that end, disabled people can provide a new perspective that others may not otherwise be able to experience.

The complete lack of music or noise that dominates the film allows us as viewers to connect with Regan and her disability in an intimate way, leading to a deeper appreciation and understanding of her strength and the power of silence. In the moments when we can hear the characters being stalked and chased by creatures, the stress of the situation rises and the suspense of the scene feels much like that of a typical horror film. However, when a similar scene plays out in Regan's perspective and all is quiet, the scene is still suspenseful, but it also takes on a clarity that can only come from silence. Without noise, our senses are not overstimulated, and we can focus better on what we see in the scene. By the end of the movie, we find that it is Regan who provides the main solution to debilitate and kill the creatures, a solution that stems from both her possession of hearing aids and her ability to see situations more clearly. Without her disability, she never could have known that her hearing aids could injure the creatures, and the clarity she experiences in these stressful situations allows her to come to this important conclusion before any of her family. Disability is often treated as a burden that can lower quality of life, but for Regan, it is just a different form of ability. As Regan shows us, silence is a powerful tool that can be used to our advantage if we allow ourselves to find it.

Although I have referred to A Quiet Place as a silent film, it does incorporate minimal sounds that accentuate the underlying messages of meaningful noise. During the most intense scenes, background music typical of horror movies is played, usually meant to build up suspense and thrill when the characters are in a scary situation. The viewer may not even consciously recognize that the music is playing until it abruptly cuts out, and the resulting silence is truly deafening. In these instances, we are meant to be viewing the scene through Regan's point of view. Sometimes we experience complete silence, while other times we experience a slight high-pitched ringing. The stark change from music to silence adds a deeper feeling to the intense scene, one that emphasizes the excessive stimulation that occurs when we are bombarded with noise. The realization that Regan experiences this choked silence all the time relates back to the idea that she sees situations from a different point-of-view, one that exemplifies the art of listening even though she cannot physically hear.

In addition to small samples of music, we are given a handful of powerful scenes in which the characters are able to speak aloud, and the gravity and importance of these situations is amplified by the stark contrast of sound against the silence of the rest of the film. During the two main dialogue scenes at the waterfall and in the sound-proof room, the characters' speeches are still hushed and cautious. There is a sense of physical relief through their facial expressions and body language. Because the characters hardly ever speak aloud to each other, dialogue adds a strong sentiment to the scenes that would had otherwise been lost. This is a direct example of the power of silence and the importance and meaning communication can have when it is not just noise.

From the start, A Quiet Place sets the stage for a powerful message hidden in a clever and entertaining plot. Silence in film is very uncommon, which places this film in a genre all its own. Listening to one another, whether it be through speech or action, is truly an art that has been lost in the jumble of media, politics, and social outcry that exists in our society today. Through its setting, plot, characters, creatures, and lack of dialogue, A Quiet Place creates a story that questions society's motives for being distracting and loud. In an interview, director and lead male actor John Krasinski describes the Abbott family's struggle when he says, "Living silently is impossible" ("A Quiet Place," YouTube). This is a fact proved throughout the movie, and it is also something that society struggles with in real life. Yes, living silently is impossible, but living loudly, without stopping to listen every once in a while, is not necessarily the answer either. If we want to avoid the societal "ruins" that the movie suggests, we must work to find a middle ground, where we speak only when we need to, listen fervently to those around us, and work diligently to be more observant and meaningful in our communication with others.

Describe a quiet place you like to spend your time in. You should say Where it is? How you knew it? How often you go there? What you do there? And explain why you like the place?

Introduction: People love the quiet place because it is the place where they do rest/ concentrate on their work. But nowadays it is tough to find such kind of place.

Library is a quiet place, but people can do only study there cannot do rest. Today, I would like to describe a place where I study/work and rest.

Where it is? and How you knew it? I live in a city , and my house is near to the bus stand. So there is no quiet place in my house because of buses horn and announcements. My brother goes to the library to study every day, but I do not like to go there because we have to sit on the chain whole the time to do study .

So my father purchased a farmhouse two years ago. It is about 10 kilometers away from the city. It is a very quiet place, and I love it.

How often you go there? So I go there twice a week and spend few hours over there.

And explain why you like the place? Whenever I feel depressed and sad, I go there. After spending some time alone, I feel fresh and relaxed . I like the place because whenever I spend time with myself, some new creative ideas generate my mind that helps in my study and painting.

2. Why is it quieter in the countryside? The main reason is the lack of traffic and industries in cities. Moreover, there is a lot of greenery which absorbs noise rather than reflecting it.

4. Compared with young people, do old people prefer to live in quiet places? I think both the old and young prefer quiet places but young people cannot enjoy the luxury of living in quiet places like the countryside as they cannot get good jobs there.

7. Do you need a quiet place when you are working? Yes, I do appreciate a quiet place when I’m working, but unfortunately, it is not always possible. So I’ve got used to some amount of noise around me.
