Friday night kicked off with a sleepover at my best friend Sarah’s house. Sandcastles, frisbee, and waves crashing provided endless smiles regardless of who ‘won.’ Inspired, we attempted boogie boarding for the first time facing challenges with giggles. As sunset neared, patrons arrived with musical instruments jamming merrily around crackling fire beside water reflections dancing to joy’s tune. Magic filled each moment.

Movie Night Memories

Back at my place, building pillow forts complete with string lights and snacks set the scene for a cozy movie marathon-wearing PJs. Our gang chose different films keeping company through various adventures together. Laughter and inside jokes sparked bonding that will carry within the heart’s library for lifetimes ahead like treasured bookmarks preserving stories between covers of life’s chapters. Fun freely given stays gold.

3 Successful Extracurricular Activity Essay Examples

The purpose of the extracurricular activities essay is for admissions officers to better understand how your extracurricular activities have shaped and motivated you. This essay shouldn’t restate the activities you’ve already shared in your resume, but should elaborate on their impact and significance to you as a person.

In this post, we will share three extracurricular essays, written by real students, that are strong responses. Read them to be inspired in your own essay writing!

Please note: Looking at examples of real essays students have submitted to colleges can be very beneficial to get inspiration for your essays. You should never copy or plagiarize from these examples when writing your own essays. Colleges can tell when an essay isn’t genuine and will not view students favorably if they plagiarized.

Essay Example #1

My fingers raced across the keys, rapidly striking one after another. My body swayed with the music as my hands raced across the piano. Crashing onto the final chord, it was over as quickly as it had begun. My shoulders relaxed and I couldn’t help but break into a satisfied grin. I had just played the Moonlight Sonata’s third movement, a longtime dream of mine.

Four short months ago, though, I had considered it impossible. The piece’s tempo was impossibly fast, its notes stretching between each end of the piano, forcing me to reach farther than I had ever dared. It was 17 pages of the most fragile and intricate melodies I had ever encountered.

But that summer, I found myself ready to take on the challenge. With the end of the school year, I was released from my commitment to practicing for band and solo performances. I was now free to determine my own musical path: either succeed in learning the piece, or let it defeat me for the third summer in a row.

Over those few months, I spent countless hours practicing the same notes until they burned a permanent place in my memory, creating a soundtrack for even my dreams. Some would say I’ve mastered the piece, but as a musician I know better. Now that I can play it, I am eager to take the next step and add in layers of musicality and expression to make the once-impossible piece even more beautiful.

What the Essay Did Well

This essay has a descriptive and engaging hook that immediately places the reader in the middle of the action and captivates us for the rest of the essay. The way the student describes playing piano as a full-body experience, from their splayed out fingers to their tensed shoulders, allows the reader to envision the student in front of them, passionately losing themselves in the music. Seeing the way they write about the piano is a sign that this student is dedicated to this extracurricular.

Another strength of this essay is how it shows this student’s character, particularly their determination. By describing the challenge of playing this piece, we can fully appreciate all that they had to overcome to be successful. Rather than simply saying it was a hard song, they show us how it was physically and mentally daunting: “ The piece’s tempo was impossibly fast, its notes stretching between each end of the piano, forcing me to reach farther than I had ever dared. It was 17 pages of the most fragile and intricate melodies I had ever encountered.”

This student knows how to make music in their writing, as well as on the piano. The use of elevated and creative language throughout the essay makes it flow smoothly for the reader. They take a rather simple story, but through their deft writing the student makes it both enjoyable and reveals details about themself.

What Could Be Improved

This essay could have been made even stronger if this student included details about them actually practicing. They go from telling us about how daunting this piece was to suddenly being able to play it months later, but admissions officers are curious about how you overcome challenges, not just the fact that you did.

Two or three sentences that describe the tedious process of practicing a particular scale or how they continuously messed up a certain bar of music would be sufficient to express what this student actually accomplished. Although space is tight in this essay, this would have been a better use of the third paragraph than what the student currently has.

Essay Example #2

My school’s newspaper and I have a typical love-hate relationship; some days I want nothing more than to pass two hours writing and formatting articles, while on others the mere thought of student journalism makes me shiver. Still, as we’re entering our fourth year together, you could consider us relatively stable. We’ve learned to accept each other’s differences; at this point I’ve become comfortable spending an entire Friday night preparing for an upcoming issue, and I hardly even notice the snail-like speed of our computers. I’ve even benefitted from the polygamous nature of our relationship—with twelve other editors, there’s a lot of cooperation involved. Perverse as it may be, from that teamwork I’ve both gained some of my closest friends and improved my organizational and time-management skills. And though leaving it in the hands of new editors next year will be difficult, I know our time together has only better prepared me for future relationships.

This response is great. It’s cute and endearing and, importantly, tells readers a lot about the student who wrote it. Framing this essay in the context of a “love-hate relationship,” then supplementing with comments like “We’ve learned to accept each other’s differences” allows this student to advertise their maturity in a unique and engaging way.

Personifying the newspaper is a creative way to demonstrate the role it plays in this student’s life. Because it is an unexpected tactic, it lets the reader appreciate the humor and wit of the author, while also being a lighthearted and fun response to read.

While Extracurricular Essays can be a place to show how you’ve grown within an activity, they can also be a place to show how you’ve grown through an activity. At the end of this essay, readers think that this student is mature and enjoyable, and we think that their experience with the school newspaper helped make them that way.

One strike against this essay is that in the first sentence it claims the student has a love-hate relationship with the newspaper, but the rest of the essay really only addresses their experience from a positive perspective. They say the “ mere thought of student journalism makes me shiver ” but there is little-to-no elaboration about the negatives. Since they poised their essay as a love-hate relationship, it feels like it is missing something without any discussion about the hate aspect of the relationship.

Essay Example #3

The cool, white halls of the Rayburn House office building contrasted with the bustling energy of interns entertaining tourists, staffers rushing to cover committee meetings, and my fellow conference attendees separating to meet with our respective congresspeople. Through civics and US history classes, I had learned about our government, but simply hearing the legislative process outlined didn’t prepare me to navigate it. It was my first political conference, and, after learning about congressional mechanics during breakout sessions, I was lobbying my representative about an upcoming vote crucial to the US-Middle East relationship. As the daughter of Iranian immigrants, my whole life had led me to the moment when I could speak on behalf of the family members who had not emigrated with my parents.

As I sat down with my congresswoman’s chief of staff, I truly felt like a participant in democracy; I was exercising my right to be heard as a young American. Through this educational conference, I developed a plan of action to raise my voice. When I returned home, I signed up to volunteer with the state chapter of the Democratic Party. I sponsored letter-writing campaigns, canvassed for local elections, and even pursued an internship with a state senate campaign. I know that I don’t need to be old enough to vote to effect change. Most importantly, I also know that I want to study government—I want to make a difference for my communities in the United States and the Middle East throughout my career.

The strength of this essay comes from its connections. It connects the student’s extracurricular activity to their studies and connects theirs studies to their personal history.

While this prompt is about extracurricular activities, it specifically references the idea that the extracurricular should support the curricular. It is focused on experiential learning for future career success. This student wants to study government, so they chose to describe an experience of hands-on learning within their field—an apt choice!

As this student discusses their extracurricular experience, they also clue readers into their future goals—they want to help Middle Eastern communities. Admissions officers love when students mention concrete plans with a solid foundation. Here, the foundation comes from this student’s ethnicity. With lines like “my whole life had led me to the moment when I could speak on behalf of the family members who had not emigrated with my parents,” the student assures admissions officers of their emotional connection to their future field.

Something that is missing from this essay is the emotional reflection this student has from their experiences in politics. They tell us they felt like a participant in democracy and they know they want to study government and make a difference, but for a really strong essay you need to dig deeper and tell the reader more about how this extracurricular makes you feel.

What does it feel like to be a participant in democracy? Liberating? Empowering? How did volunteering impact them personally? Did they develop a new appreciation for what it means to be an American? What feeling is this student trying to elicit by studying government? While all of these questions don’t have to be addressed, the idea is to inject more of the student’s feelings and emotion into the essay to help us better understand exactly what this extracurricular meant to them.

My Weekend Activities

My last weekend was so fantastic that I am sharing my experience with you here. I usually sleep a lot on a Friday night without any alarm. On this day, I woke up at 9 a. m.

After waking up, I did my homework. Then my mom told us that we were going to see our grandma today.

So, I was really excited about that. She goes to see our grandma every weekend, and I love that too. My sister was also very happy about that.

In the afternoon, my dad drove us there. My grandma wasn’t too happy to see us, but she was still glad to see us. She had one of my uncles who lived with her and some cousins. I had a really great time with them. On Sunday, we came back.

My Weekend Activities Example 1

My weekends are so much more interesting. I want to spend the whole weekend doing fun activities. I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

My last weekend was amazing and interesting. I’m going to share my experience here with you all. I really hope you’ll love this experience.

A zoo is an amusement park for animals. Many different animal species can be found there.  Some of them are dangerous, but most of them are friendly. You can play games with some of them, such as feeding them or petting them.

We spent around 4 hours there and went back home in the evening. And then we became fresh and went for a nice dinner at a beautiful restaurant nearby.

The restaurant was near the beach. I’ve been there before, and I love this place so much. We had some delicious food and went back home.

My Weekend Activities Example 2

My weekend is something I really look forward to. I really get to rest and relax from the other busier five days of school.

On Friday morning, I was overjoyed because I would only have to get up very early for this one day and then sleep whenever I wanted on weekends. Moreover, as a family, we could all spend some time on weekends.

This essay is about how great last weekend was for me. I was happy because I could do my homework quickly and complete it. I was busy helping my mother prepare food and looking after my little sister while she played.

In the afternoon, I helped my mother cook and eat lunch. We had a great time together. My niece was there too, and we played a lot.

After lunch, we went for a drive around town. It was so much fun that we really loved the day. On returning home, we were tired. We had tea and went to sleep early.

The weekend went by fast, and I had lots of fun. I look forward to the next weekend for more fun and relaxation.

My Weekend Activities Example 3

My weekend was great. I went to see the new Star Trek movie, and I dressed up as my favourite character. But the movie itself wasn’t very good, and I fell asleep. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one!

Creating Your Perfect Weekend

In pursuit of the perfect weekend.

What’s worse than a weekend that disappears instantly in a mess of exhaustion and chores? But it happens so often. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to work on improving your weekends!

You deserve time to rest and recharge, enjoy family and friend time, work on hobbies and pet projects. The perfect weekend involves doing these things AND being able to start the new week feeling refreshed and organised. You can totally do both.

Before we start, I’ll admit that a perfect weekend probably doesn’t exist. Not in any one format anyway. It’s different for everyone.

BUT you can work on making your weekends close to perfect for YOU. Here are some ideas to help you create your perfect weekend – whatever that looks like.

Cheer Up Your Inbox

Brighten up your inbox by subscribing to the newsletter. No pressure. And no spam.

Does the Perfect Weekend Exist?

There’s a LOT of pressure on weekends. The weekend is your precious time off, time to yourself, time with family and friends, time to run errands, socialise, relax, work out, chill out, sort out the house, get out the house, and all the rest… No wonder weekends can be just exhausting.

The other pressure on weekends is that we often find ourselves feeling guilty about slowing down and thinking about how we SHOULD be doing this or that. We then end up feeling disappointed when we don’t “have a great weekend” and end up with the Sunday night blues .

It’s true that no one bounces into work on Monday morning excited about how they had such an average weekend. But we don’t beat ourselves up about having a really mediocre Tuesday evening, so why does the weekend need to be so perfect? Time to let go of all that pressure. A weekend is two days to spend how you please. No more or less . Being mindful of this can play a big part in how much you enjoy your weekend.

In reality, the “perfect weekend” is going to be one which leaves you feeling both relaxed and energised. So how can you achieve that?

Let go of the pressure to do more, enjoy more, achieve more.

A weekend is two days to spend how you please. No more or less.

What Would Be Your Perfect Weekend?

What your perfect weekend looks like will depend on lots of different factors. Your lifestyle, family situation, work patterns, and personality type will all influence what constitutes a perfect weekend for you. My ideal weekend when I was single in my 20s looked a lot different to how it looks now years later with kids to look after. (Yes, I still want to spend it sipping cocktails somewhere beautiful, but these days there would a lot more naps involved.)

Your perfect weekend will also change depending on what’s going on in your life right now. Before the pandemic, many of us were desperate for a quiet weekend at home. After a year of staying home, we were desperate for a weekend away. Needs change with the ebb and flow of life.

The Perfect Weekend Challenge

This weekend, challenge yourself to forget all thoughts of what you should be doing, or where you should be going, and create the perfect weekend according to what you need most right now. Start be asking yourself a few questions:

  • What would make me feel happy?
  • What would make me feel relaxed?
  • What would make me feel energised?
  • What do I need more or less of right now?

This should help you to focus on what an ideal weekend would like for you THIS weekend.

How to Create Your Perfect Weekend

Perfect Weekend Ideas

Sometimes you don’t need to ask yourself what kind of weekend you want. Sometimes you just know exactly what you want to get out of a weekend, and what would make it perfect. These weekends tend to fall into some of these categories:

The Relaxing Weekend

The secret to a relaxing weekend is to leave everything else at the door – including all those thoughts about what you should be doing instead.

Forget about the niggling DIY jobs or other things on your to-do list that can wait. If it’s urgent, get it done beforehand and then go all-in and commit to a weekend of complete downtime. Watch all the TV you want, have an at-home spa day, order takeaway, enjoy the Perfect Sunday Morning . No guilt allowed.

The Social Weekend

Some of the most memorable weekends are the busiest. Sometimes you need to have a jam-packed weekend seeing friends and family, where you end up exhausted on Sunday night, but good-exhausted.

The Getting-Stuff-Done Weekend

Occasionally, the best Monday morning vibes come from knowing that you were really productive over the weekend and used it to sort out all the little life admin tasks that had been hanging over you. If you don’t have any weekend plans, take the time to sort out your paperwork, spring clean your house , batch cook for the freezer, or any other jobs that you never get round to doing in the week. You’ll cruise into Monday feeling like you’re winning.

The Working-on-a-Project Weekend

On a similar theme, if you have a project you want to complete, like redecorating a room, clearing out the garage, selling all your 1990s collector beanie babies on eBay (can it be done? asking for a friend…) then pick a weekend and get it done. It’s going to feel so good to get it finished.

The Getting Away Weekend

Ah, that weekend away feeling. Heading off on Friday, full of excitement, to somewhere new. If you haven’t had a weekend away since the COVID Beforetimes, then you’re not alone. Get dreaming. Start planning that next weekend away for when restrictions are lifted.

The Unplugged Weekend

Sometimes you want or need to shut out the world and have some proper quiet time (and not see anyone else’s Insta-perfect weekend). Sometimes you should do exactly that. Have a weekend where you only use your phone for essential calls and do Literally Anything Else. Read a book, go for a long walk, do a craft, watch old movies, have a games night, go on a family adventure. Be present. Old-skool weekends feel so good.

The Perfectly-Balanced Weekend

This is probably most people’s idea of the ideal weekend. It’s the one where we manage to fit in something relaxing , something social , and something productive , which is probably the holy trinity of weekend activities. Sounds obvious, but in truth not many weekends actually turn out like that. It might take a bit of planning, but it’s totally do-able. And if you’re wondering where you fit in the boring stuff like laundry and grocery shopping, there are plenty of ideas here for making the most of your time: How To Improve Your Weekend .

Not every weekend will be perfect. Some won’t even be good, because that’s life. But knowing what you want to get out of your weekend and not feeling compelled to do certain things gives you the best chance of making it perfect for YOU. Plus – the important thing to remember is that next week another weekend is coming.

How to talk about the weekend in English

Everyone loves the weekend. Weekends are a huge topic of conversation. Starting on Wednesday or Thursday, people will ask you about your weekend plans. When you return to work or school, you'll be asked how your weekend went. So it's helpful to have a nice range of phrases to use for these conversations.

The upcoming weekend

If you want to ask someone about the upcoming weekend in English, here are some common questions:

What are you doing this weekend?
Do you have anything going on this weekend?
Do you have any big plans for the weekend?
Do you have anything planned for this weekend?

If you have plans, you can tell people about them:

I'm driving to Baltimore with a friend.
I've got a date lined up.
Francine and I are taking the kids to the zoo.

If you don't have any plans, here are some good phrases:

I don't have anything planned.
I'll probably just stay at home and relax.
I just want to sleep in!

Of course, you might not want to know about other people's weekend plans. In that case, just wish them a happy weekend:

Enjoy your weekend!
Have a great weekend!
See you next week.

The weekend past

After the weekend is over, you can ask about it with these expressions:

How was your weekend?
Did you do anything fun over the weekend?
What did you get up to this weekend?
Did you have a good weekend?

Here are some answers:

It was awesome!
It was pretty laid-back.
I went out with some friends on Saturday.
I just puttered around the house.
I had a pretty uneventful weekend.

Things to do on the weekend

Here are some of the activities that people like to do on the weekend:

  • go out to eat
  • go out (to a bar or club)
  • see a movie
  • binge watch TV shows
  • chill out at home
  • catch up on sleep
  • lay around the house
  • do some housework
  • do some yard work
  • spend time with your family
  • take a road trip
  • go to church
  • get together with friends
  • have a cookout
  • have a house party
  • have a dinner party
  • have a big family meal
  • go shopping
  • catch up on work

Bonus: Which weekend do you mean?

One difficult part of conversations about the weekend is knowing which weekend you mean. Here are some example sentences to help you figure out what "last weekend", "this weekend", and "next weekend" mean, depending on when you say them:

Monday- Tuesday

Wednesday-Friday

Saturday-Sunday

General Rules:

essay about my weekend activities

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, what do you usually do on weekends.

Well, I think I do what most people do actually . At times I hang out with friends, go to the mall, watch a movie at the movie theater or eat some snacks . Other times I stay home and either play on my PC or actually prepare for the next week. Just ordinary stuff I  guess .

My Personal Answer:

As a grown up , I  have to say that my weekends have become quite boring. What I do is either work related , or I go shopping for groceries . Of course, I do try to make things more interesting, and on occasions I'd ask a friend out or organize a hike outside the city. Something else that I really enjoy is biking, so I'd do that too if I'm  in the mood  and the weather allows it .

Did you do anything special last weekend?

Well, actually lately my weekends have been quite similar . Because of the Covid-19 pandemic , I think most of us became a bit closed , introverted  and mostly stay home. Last weekend was the same for me, as I staid home and played video games . A bit boring, I know.

What will you do next weekend?

I don't have any big plans in the coming weeks , and so I guess I'll stay mostly home and play video games . This is for my free leisure time . Of course, I will prepare for the next week, do all my assignments , do some house work and stuff like that. I don't know if I'll hang out or not.  Haven't  decided yet.

Well, I'll definitely try to stay active , that's  for sure . I try to stay in shape and keep fit as much as possible . And so... I might bike around town, or try to work out at home. I have some equipment for working out... dumbbells , a bench and some barbells with weights . So, I hope I can spend some time on myself . Apart from that, the usual as always , some shopping , some house work and so on.

What do other people in your hometown usually do on weekends?

Well, If we talk about young adults and teenagers , well most of them stay online these days. Yes, some might go out to see their friends, but most of them will stay online and either play video games , mobile games or just get stuck on social media and scroll ... It's a little weird but that our generation .

Adults will definitely try to go out of the big city. In my country, many middle aged people invest in a small land or a small villa outside of the big city for a weekend getaway . During the weekend, they might go and fix something at the property , build up something, plant vegetables or flowers and so on. Many want to prepare a place like this for their retirement , and so they will go every week, adding more and more comfort to it, until it's perfect .

Are weekends enough for you to rest for the week?

Sometimes I do feel that I need longer weekends, that's  for sure . I think it depends on how heavy my schedule is. At times, when I have a lot of projects or assignments to work on , I have to spend the whole weekend working, rather than having fun. And then, I feel that I need a few more days, to really relax .

To be honest, I didn't have a proper weekend since I was a college student . As I'm mostly self-employed and independent , I work 7 days a week , without any really free weekend. I always have something to do, and it's either related to my work, another project I come up with or dealing with family business . So, I cant remember when was the last time I could forget everything and just lie down for 2-3 days, without having to do anything.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation Essay for Students and Children

500+ words essay on how i spent my summer vacation.

Summertime is the most awaited time of any student’s life . It gives them a break from the scorching sun and blazing heat. We got up early in the morning at 7 o’clock, despite no school. We had trainers who would teach us different things each day. On the first day, I got to learn karate, which was very amusing and helpful. Further, I learned how to play sports like basketball , table tennis, and volleyball.

Finally, came my most awaited part. We were taught painting and unique tips to master this art. I learned it quickly and started enjoying painting. My passion for painting began from this summer camp , and I will forever be indebted to it.

My Grandparents’ Place

After my summer camp ended, my whole family decided to visit my grandparent’s village . It is situated away from the city and is full of lush and greenery. I love spending time with my grandparents so I was very excited to visit their village.

We stayed there for over two weeks, and that throughout that time, I was at my best behavior. I used to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning to take a stroll with my grandfather. Then all the family members would get together to have breakfast full of healthy things and fresh fruits from the farm nearby.

In the evening, we would sit by our grandmother’s bed and listen to stories. Then, my siblings and I used to go to the terrace and play games. We would also gaze at their stars all night, as we did not get that in the city.

In short, this is how I spent my summer vacation. It was definitely one of the best times of my lives. I got to learn new things and spend valuable time with my grandparents. I feel blessed to have a loving family with whom I can enjoy my summer vacation.

Short Paragraph on My Last Weekend (459 Words)

essay about my weekend activities

Here is your short paragraph on my last weekend:

Weekend is always a fun because it’s time to spend with your loved ones. It’s time to relax, break the boredom and bury all the tensions in some corner of your mind.

People of all ages enjoy weekend and makes plans in advance on how they are going to spend them in the best possible way.

I am one of those people who eagerly wait for the entire week & prepare a list of what I am going to do on weekend.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

I like spending my weekends with my friends and family but sometimes I get confused on how to spend them. Sometimes I go out and watch movie if I get to know that some good realizes has come.

Last Sunday was going bad as I had planned nothing because all my friends and family were out of the town. I was totally screwed up & was fully prepared to spend a boring day ahead which I never wanted but unfortunately I didn’t had any choice left with me.

I decided to go out to shop some apparel for me to make myself happy & buy some stuff for my college project. But fortunately I had an unexpected treat by my old friend which made my day. I woke up late at 9 am because I knew waking up early is of no use. I took up shower had tea & breakfast dressed up and moved out of the house at 10 AM. As soon I locked the house I saw one lady coming inside my house.

I was surprised to see her. She was my best friend Sneha whom I had not seen for 2.5 years. I unlocked the house and welcomed her in. We were great pals and had spent really good time together. But Sneha’s father got transferred to Delhi so she moved to Delhi.

We both were very glad to see her after a long time. She told me that she had 3 days holiday so she decided to come to Mumbai to spend those days with me. We both talked for hours about what new things happened in our lives in these 2.5 years.

We went out at Juhu beach and had fun like we used to have in the old times. We made sand castles and took pictures. We had food at the nearby restaurant. She did not allow me to pay for anything. Then we hired a cab to visit places where we spend out childhood.

In the evening we went to watch the movie named “Warriors”. We enjoyed it immensely as it was really good. After watching the movie we came back home at 9 pm. It was a great weekend.

How to Make the Most of Summer

You don’t need a vacation to embrace a sunnier state of mind.

An illustration of an office desk, chair, and trash can submerged in a swimming pool. A beach ball is suspended over the water. A man wearing a tie is lying on a pineapple pool float and he is floating on the water.

By Jancee Dunn

Summer may be a few weeks away, but Memorial Day weekend is often when people start asking if you have vacation plans. And for many reasons, including work demands or a tight budget, the answer might be “nope.”

But you can still find ways to enjoy the summer even if you can’t get away, whether it’s getting more ice cream into your life, bringing flowers from your backyard to work, or taking a nightly firefly walk.

The trick is to look for small opportunities to appreciate the season, said Peter Economou, an assistant professor of applied psychology at Rutgers University. “You do have to create them,” he added. “They won’t just fall into your lap.”

So I asked him and other experts for advice on how to savor the summer.

Create a summer ritual at work.

If you work indoors, see if you can move any tasks outside, such as taking a call or a meeting in the park, said Cal Newport, an associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University and the author of “Slow Productivity.”

Working outside, he said, varies your day, connects you to nature and can unlock more interesting thoughts .

If you can’t work outside, eat lunch outdoors, Dr. Economou added. On warm days, he said, sometimes he’ll take a break to watch pups at a nearby dog park.

You can also establish some low-key summer rituals at work, like a Friday night drink with co-workers, suggested Kandi Wiens, a workplace stress researcher at the University of Pennsylvania and the author of “Burnout Immunity.” Emphasize that it’s optional so no one feels pressured, Dr. Wiens said.

Or you could organize a potluck lunch where each person brings a favorite summer dish every week, Dr. Wiens added. (This corn and tomato salad recipe is my go-to.)

Seize the daylight.

If your work hours are flexible, ask your supervisor if you can come in an hour ahead, so you can leave earlier and enjoy the extra daylight hours, Dr. Economou suggested.

Since the sun sets later this time of year, your time after work “can feel like a whole extra day,” Dr. Newport said.

So during the summer, try to be “extra committed” to leaving work on time, he said. And remember to take your vacation time, even if you’re not going anywhere. Nearly half of U.S. workers don’t take their paid time off, according to a 2023 Pew Research Center survey .

Create a ‘fun file’ for weekends.

Try to approach your summer weekends with a vacation mind-set, said Mike Rucker, a behavioral scientist and the author of “The Fun Habit.” A 2021 study found that people who viewed their weekends as vacations reported greater happiness levels the following Monday.

Dr. Rucker suggested creating a “fun file” — a list of simple, achievable things you want to do this summer. Focus on day trips that you can do for a few hours.

And most communities, large and small, offer free or low-cost events during the summer — like outdoor concerts and festivals, Dr. Rucker added, so check your community newspaper, library or local government website.

Build in weekday summer pleasures.

Send a group text to your neighbors for a spontaneous meet-up at an ice cream truck, or host a weeknight dinner in your backyard or local park. “These activities foster a sense of togetherness and make the summer feel special,” Dr. Rucker said.

Or think of summer activities that you used to love as a kid, like riding a bike or playing basketball, added Dr. Wiens, and see if you can take them up again.

One summer treat that Dr. Newport gives himself is to leave work early on a particularly hot day to see a matinee. “There’s something about being in a movie when you know most people are still at work that magnifies the relaxation,” he said.

I’m going to take the experts’ advice and invite some co-workers to eat lunch on a bench outside. Maybe I’ll make it more festive and bring a batch of Katharine Hepburn’s brownies . Inside, it’s a sad desk lunch; outside, it’s a picnic.

Social Sharing

The first Pride event in Binbrook, a community in the southeastern corner of Hamilton's municipal limits, was 12 people gathered around a park bench outside a Tim Hortons.

Cohen Glaw created a Facebook event that year, in 2021, and put the word out about the meetup, says Kasha Czech, a drag performer who grew up in the community in the pre-Pride era and is now one of its co-ordinators.

"About 12 people showed up," she said. "It was just a small little get together."

That was only three years ago, but now the suburban area's Pride celebration has blossomed into a day-long festival at the Binbrook Fairgrounds, with this year's incarnation running this Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. It will include music, vendors, comedy and food, and a drag show that Czech is co-hosting.

She said the rapid growth of the event shows how much demand there was in the community for a way to celebrate Pride at home, but also reflects the population growth in Binbrook, which has seen an influx of new residents.

Following a year where drag storytimes and other drag events were widely targeted across the country, Czech said it warms her heart to know she will be celebrating the iconic queer performance style in the community where she grew up.

"The times we are in now, having drag events in small communities has become a little bit of a challenge because there is so much misinformation online about what drag is," she said. "It is a queer art form. We can make it family-friendly."

Celebrating drag as an art form

1st pride held in norfolk county.

Recalling her youth in Binbrook, Czech noted that without public transportation connecting the community to the rest of Hamilton, it can be isolating for queer people unable to access Pride celebrations in larger centres.

That motivation, to bring Pride to the people where they are, is a driver for her and her team at Binbrook Pride, much as it is for Jason Dale, co-chair of Pride Haldimand-Norfolk.

The organization held its annual Pride celebrations at Powell Park, on the main street of Port Dover, last weekend, the first time doing so in Norfolk County and likewise in a central location.

"This is in the centre of town," he said, noting previous years' events had been held largely off the beaten track and exclusively in Haldimand County. "We had walk-in traffic."

People sit outside in colourful clothing.

Dale noted new residents to the rural area have helped change the tone towards people in 2SLGBTQ+ communities, but also believes it's simply a function of society evolving.

"When they first started [Pride Haldimand-Norfolk], the lawn signs were often stolen or damaged," said Dale, who grew up in the area and moved away, later moving back with his husband and adopting children. "This year, there was not one incident."

He said there's still some online hate targeted at queer groups in the area, and "every so often, someone does a burnout on the rainbow crosswalk." As a result, he said, it was important to his organization to work with police on the event — a controversial topic among queer communities, especially when it comes to Pride events.

  • Hamilton police response to Pride violence was 'inadequate,' says independent review
  • 'More to Pride than celebration': Hamilton LGBTQ community calls for greater support

The Haldimand-Norfolk group worked with the Ontario Provincial Police's community policing team, which attended the event in plain clothes, something Dale feels was a compromise.

"I understand there are complaints with how policing has been done by uniformed officers, especially that one in Hamilton that descended into chaos," he said, referring to the 2019 event after which an independent report  found that police "failed to protect" festival attendees when anti-Pride protesters began attacking those celebrating.

"[The OPP presence] gave me and our committee reassurance," Dale said.

'It can be isolating'

Halton Region, a population of 548,435 – nearly the size of Hamilton – saw its first Pride festival last year in Milton. This year, organizers have moved festivities to Hidden Valley Park in Burlington, Ont., where Halton Pride Fest 2024 takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"We get a lot of teenagers that come," says Leanne Rancourt, a parent support lead with PFLAG Halton, an advocacy group for queer people and their families. "It's so good to see them in a space where they can just be themselves."

Two people sit on a bench under trees smiling.

"Sometimes it can be isolating for youth when you think you're the only one," added Rancourt, a parent to queer children who works on the event with her husband.

"They shouldn't have to go to Toronto or Hamilton, to the bigger centres."

Even in Hamilton, where Pride Hamilton will host its main event Aug. 10 at Pier 4 Park, smaller community Pride events are also taking place to cater to specific aspects of the queer community.

Queer Halal Time, a local meetup group for 2SLGBTQ+ Muslims, is planning to host its first Pride event on July 20. It is still waiting for a permit for the location, so hasn't released the full details yet, but is currently raising money to help pay for the event, which will be a picnic in a park.

"Queer Muslims and allies are boycotting Pride Toronto because they haven't taken a stance against the genocide [in Gaza]," said one of the organizers, Jihan "JJ" Hussein. "But we still want to celebrate Pride."

The headshots of two people

She says the local community of queer Muslims is thriving since regular meetups began near the start of the year.

"It took off pretty quickly. These spaces were lacking," Hussein said. "Right now, Hamilton is the coolest place to be if you're queer."
