Slide Transitions in PowerPoint [A Beginner’s Guide!]
By: Author Shrot Katewa
PowerPoint presentations can sometimes be boring looking especially if you simply have a lot of text on your slides. You may need to add some pizzazz to it! And, the best way to jazz it up without being obtrusive is to use slide transitions in PowerPoint!
Slide transition in PowerPoint is the visual effect applied to an individual slide. The effect is visible when one slide changes or transitions into another. PowerPoint allows you to customize and control speed, sound, and other effects for certain transitions using the “Transitions” ribbon.
In this article, we will understand more about transitions and their types. Then, we shall also learn more about how to apply transitions in PowerPoint.
Plus, I’ll also show you some advanced techniques such as applying delay or changing the duration of slide transition. That, and much more! So, let’s get started!
1. What are Slide Transitions in PowerPoint?
Let’s start with the basics – what are slide transitions in PowerPoint?
As described before, transitions are basically animation-type visual effects that are applied to slides (instead of the elements on the slides) in PowerPoint. Using slide transition can make a subtle but huge impact in making your presentation feel engaging.
There are different types of slide transitions (we shall learn more about them in the next section). Additionally, you can further control certain aspects of the slide transition.
You can also add sound during the transition of slides although I highly advise against doing so. But, I’m sharing this just to show the level of customization of transitions offered by PowerPoint!
In the subsequent sections, we will learn more about the types of transitions and how to apply and customize them in PowerPoint!
2. Different Types of Transitions in PowerPoint?
In PowerPoint, slide transitions are divided into 3 categories. These categories are divided according to the type of transitions that are contained in each section.
The effects in each category are divided in a way that they are similar to each other in terms of visual intensity. The difference between the three categories is how much the transitions affect the overall tone of the presentation on a visual level while changing the slides.
The three categories of the slide transitions are –
1. Subtle: The effects in this category are, as the name suggests, very subtle. The transitions are minimal in effect and require very little time to transition from one slide to the next. These transitions are best used for simple effects. There are a total of 12 effects in this category.
2. Exciting: This category contains effects that are a bit more flashy than the effects in the “ Subtle ” category. The effects in this category are more visually prominent and are fairly noticeable. This category has the highest number of effects with a total of 29 different options.
3. Dynamic Content: This category contains strong transitions. These effects are even more vibrant than the effects in the “ Exciting ” category. This category has the least number of effects with a total of 7 different options.
2b. List of Transition Effects in PowerPoint
A list of the 48 different effects that are divided into 3 categories, provided in PowerPoint, is given below.
- Random Bars
- Checkerboard
- Honeycomb
- Ferris Wheel
- Fly Through
3. How to Apply Slide Transitions in PowerPoint?
Here’s how to add a slide transition in PowerPoint –
- Select the slide from the slide thumbnail view on the left.
- Click on the “Transitions” tab.
- Choose a transition as per your preference.
- Use the “Transition Effects” option to customize (if necessary)
- Preview the transition.
I’ve described the complete process in a step-by-step manner with visual aids below –
Step-1: Select the slide and go to the “Transitions” tab
The first step of the process is to select the slide that you want to add the transition to. You can do so by clicking on the slide in the slide thumbnail view on the left part of the screen.
Then, go to the “ Transitions ” tab in the ribbon of your PowerPoint presentation. It is the 5 th tab in the ribbon section.
Step-2: Click on the “More” button
After you click on the “ Transitions ” tab, click on the tiny arrow button pointing downwards. It is the “ More ” button of the “ Transition to this slide ” section (as shown in the image in step 1).
This will open a drawer with multiple transition effect options.
Step-3: Select your preferred transition effect
After you have clicked on the “ More ” button, a drop-down menu will appear on the screen where different slide transitions effects are displayed.
Simply click on your preferred transition effect and the slide transition will be applied to that slide immediately.
4. How to Preview a Slide Transition?
To preview a slide transition in your PowerPoint presentation, you have to click on the “ Preview ” button.
In the “ Transitions ” tab, after you select a slide transition effect, simply click on the “ Preview ” button at the left-most part of the options present on the “ Transitions ” ribbon.
The transition effect will be played on the slide to give you a preview when you click on the button.
Another alternative is to enter into the “ slide show mode ” using the current slide. Don’t forget to use the “ Esc ” key to exit the slide show mode in PowerPoint.
5. How to Modify Slide Transitions?
In Microsoft PowerPoint, there are different options that you can use to modify and edit a slide transition effect to better fit the style of your presentation.
You can modify the slide transition using the “ Effect Options ” button, or edit the duration, or add sounds to the slide transition.
In the following section, I will discuss the three mentioned options available for you to modify your slide transitions, and how to use them.
5a. Modify Transitions using Effect Options in PowerPoint
The “ Effect Options ” in Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to modify the direction and intensity of the transition effects.
Follow the steps given below to modify the slide transitions in your PowerPoint presentation using the “ Effect Options ”
Step-1: Click on the “Effect Option” button
The first step of the process is to select the “ Effect Options ” button which is located at the right-most part of the “ Transitions in this Slide ” section. This will open a drop-down menu.
Step-2: Select your preferred modifications
After you have clicked on the “ Effect Options ” button, a drop-down menu will appear on your screen (as shown in the image in step 1).
The drop-down menu will provide you with all the possible modifications that you can make to the slide transition in your PowerPoint presentation.
All you have to do now is to select your preferred modification from the drop-down menu and it will be added to the slide in your PowerPoint presentation immediately.
It is important to note that these effect options vary from one type of transition to the other. Furthermore, some transitions may not even have an effect option available.
5b. How to Add Sound to Slide Transition in PowerPoint?
If you want to add a sound to the slide transition in your PowerPoint presentation, at first you have to select the slide.
Then click on your preferred sound effect from the “ Sound ” option in the “ Timing ” section of the “ Transitions ” tab. The sound effect will be added immediately after you select the sound.
5c. How to Control the Duration of the Slide Transition in PowerPoint?
In PowerPoint, you can also control how long you want the transition to be visible. You can speed up or slow down the transition effect itself!
Here’s how to control the duration of the slide transition –
Step-1: Go to the “Transitions” tab
The first step is to select the slide that has a transition added and head over to the “transitions” tab.
Step-2: Change the “Duration” of the slide transition
After you have entered the “ Transition ” tab, simply type in the time duration you want the transition to take in the “ Duration ” box.
The “ Duration ” box is located under the “ Timing ” section of the “ Transitions ” tab (as shown in the image in step 1). Once the duration has been added, the transition effect will either be slow or faster based on the time added.
6. How to Apply Transitions to All Slides in PowerPoint?
If you have several slides in a presentation and you want to apply a particular type of transition on all slides, it would be quite a cumbersome process to select each slide and repeat the process over and over again.
Fortunately, PowerPoint allows you to apply the same transition to all slides with a click of a button! Here’s how to do it –
Step-1: Apply a Slide Transition for a Slide
The first step is to apply a slide transition to any one of the slides in your presentation. Follow the detailed process described earlier in the presentation to apply the slide transition.
Step-2: Click on the “Apply To All” option
The next step is to simply click on the “ Apply to All ” option under the transitions tab.
This will apply the transition present on the selected slide to all the slides in your presentation! Just make sure that you haven’t used a different transition for a particular slide as using this button will override any pre-existing slide transitions applied to other slides!
7. How to Remove Transition from a Slide in PowerPoint?
To understand the process of removing a slide transition effect from your PowerPoint presentation, follow the 2 easy steps described below.
Step-1: Select the Slide with an Existing Transition
The first step of the process is to select the slide with a transition that you want to remove. After that, head over to the “ Transitions ” tab.
Step-2: Select the “None” option from the “Transitions” tab
Simply click on the “ None ” option from the “Transitions to this slide” section. If this option is not visible, click on the “ More ” button of the “ Transition in the Slide ” section as described earlier, to open a drop-down menu
After you open the drop-down menu by clicking on the “ More ” button, select the “ None ” option located in the top left corner of the drop-down menu. It is the first option in the “Subtle” category of slide transitions.
After you click on the “ None ” option, all the slide transition effects on that slide will be removed from your PowerPoint presentation.
8. How to Set Automatic Slide Transition in PowerPoint?
To set your slide transitions to automatically change to the next slide, you have to set a timer on the slide transition using the “ Advance slide ” option in the “ Timing ” section of the “ Transitions ” tab.
Here’s how to automatically advance slides in PowerPoint –
Step-1: Select the slide to add the effect
The first step is to select the slide that you want to modify or add the effect to.
Step-2: Locate the “Advance slide” option
Next, click on the “ Transitions ” tab and locate the “ Advance Slide ” options. You should be able to spot it on the top-right part of the ribbon under the “Timing ” section.
Step-3: Remove Checkmark from the “On Mouse Click” option
Next, make sure that you uncheck the “ On Mouse Click ” option.
This option is usually used to enable the mouse click as a trigger for the slide to transition. However, since in this case, we want the slide to transition automatically, we shall disable this option.
Step-4: Select the “After” check box
Now, enable the “After” option by making a checkmark before the option. This will allow you to set a timer for the slide to change.
Step-5: Adjust the interval
After you add the checkmark for the “ After ” option, set the interval after which you want the slide to change automatically (as shown in the image in step 4)
Simply type in the duration in the box to the right of the “ After ” option and the slide will change automatically after that interval while in presentation mode.
Step-6: Choose the “Apply to All” option
The last step is to choose the “Apply to All” option as described in the article before. This will create a seamless transition effect on all slides and make them transition automatically.
9. Can You Add Multiple Transitions to the Same Slide?
You can’t add multiple transitions to the same slide in your PowerPoint presentation.
However, you can use the Animations feature of PowerPoint and add effects to the objects, texts, shapes, and images in your slide.
You can add multiple animations on the same slide while also adding a transition to it. We have an entire article dedicated to this, which explains the use of animations in more detail. Click here to read the article.
10. How to Fix “Slide Won’t Transition” Error?
Usually, when users face the issue of a slide not transitioning, there are two main issues that you need to check.
You either have a “ Custom Slide Show ” selected or the “ On mouse click ” option is not turned on for your presentation.
Both of these issues and their easy fixes are explained below.
Issue-1: Check your custom slide show feature
Sometimes, users set up their custom slide show feature but only add the first slide and close the process before selecting the rest of the slides.
This may cause your presentation to only display the selected slide and not the rest of the presentation while in presentation mode. Follow the steps described below to get around this issue.
Step-1: Select the Custom Shows option
After you have entered the “ Slide Show ” tab from the ribbon of your PowerPoint presentation, click on the “ Custom Shows ” option.
The “ Custom Shows ” option is located in the drop-down menu of the “ Start Slide Show ” button in the “ Slide Show ” tab of your PowerPoint presentation.
Step-2: Make sure the right slides are in the pop-up window
After you click on the “ Custom Show ” button a pop-up window will appear on your screen. If you don’t want to use the “ Custom Slide Show ” feature, then make sure to remove all the slides in the pop-up window.
However, to use this feature, you have to add all the slides that you want to include in the presentation and not just one slide. After that, your slides will transition accordingly.
Issue-2: The “On Mouse Click” feature is turned off
Sometimes, the reason why users are unable to transition from one slide to another is that the feature which allows users to change slides using the mouse is turned off.
The whole process of fixing this issue is given below.
To get started on fixing the issue, at first you have to select any slide from your PowerPoint presentation and go to the “ Transitions ” tab from the ribbon section as described earlier in this article.
Step-2: Checkmark the “On Mouse Click” option
The first step of fixing this issue is to go to the “ Transitions ” tab from the ribbon and then clicking on the check box located right before the “ On Mouse Click ” option in the “ Advance Slide ” feature of the “ Timing ” section.
Step-3: Click on the “Apply to all” button
After you have turned on the “ On Mouse Click ” option, simply click on the “ Apply to all ” button, which is located at the bottom left corner of the “ Timing ” section in the “ Transitions ” tab.
This will turn on the “ On Mouse Click ” feature for all the slides in your PowerPoint presentation. After that, you will be able to transition from one slide to another normally.

5 Tips for Creating Animations & Transitions in PowerPoint
Adding animation to your PowerPoint slideshows can greatly enhance the experience you offer through your presentation. If you’re new to PowerPoint, follow these tips to get started with animations.
1. Transition vs Object Animations
One of the first things you need to be aware of when using PowerPoint animations is the difference between transition animations and object animations.
On PowerPoint, you can animate each object you add to your slides. While this can be useful when presenting key points in a presentation, you should try to keep object animations to a minimum.
You can also add transition animations to your slides. These animations help create smoother transitions between slides.
2. Time It Perfectly
Each and every animation you add in PowerPoint can be customized to your preference by setting times for the duration of the animation as well as adding delays.
It’s up to you to experiment with different settings to find the right time and delays for your animations. Try to keep animations short and sweet.
3. Stack Multiple Animations
Another useful feature of PowerPoint animations is the ability to stack multiple animations for objects. For example, you can add both entrance and exit animations for each object on your slide by stacking different animation effects.
Stacking animations can drastically increase the duration of your slideshow presentations so use this feature only when necessary.
4. Automatic vs Controlled Animations
Controlled animations offer a great advantage when you’re delivering specific types of presentations like product reveals and feature showcases. For example, if you want to talk about key points in your speech, you can use controlled animations to reveal those points one at a time upon your mouse click or using a remote.
You can also set your animations to play automatically so they flow through your slide presentations without having to click for each slide to start.
5. Keep It Simple
Overall, you should try to keep animations to a minimum and avoid using the more flashy animations in your presentations. For example, it’s perfectly fine to add a fade-in transition effect to your slides. However, adding flashing and bouncing animations may hurt your reputation as a professional.
Stick to the simple and minimal animations to make your presentations more entertaining and easier to look at.

What Is an Animation in Microsoft PowerPoint (Definition)?
PowerPoint animations are visual effects for the objects in your PowerPoint presentation. PowerPoint animations bring objects like text, images, or charts on or off your slide.
Microsoft calls these entrances and exits. An entrance is an animation that brings something onto the slide. An exit moves an object off the slide. Use an animation to make an object enter or exit your slide (or even move it between spots on a slide.)
My recommendation is to completely build out your presentation first and add animations later. Focus on content and the ideas you want to convey. Add the sizzle later in the form of well-timed animations.
PPT animations are the visual effects for objects on your slides. Transitions are the animations that occur when you change slides. This tutorial covers only PPT animations.
How to Make Your First Animation
Read on to learn more about how to customize PowerPoint animations and work quickly with templates.
The tips in this section were written using macOS and Microsoft 365. If you’ve got a different operating system or a different version of PowerPoint, your steps may be slightly different.
Let’s learn PowerPoint animation using a template. This is the Orange Animated PowerPoint Template . You can download it today from Envato to follow along as we learn how to add animation in PowerPoint! It’s the perfect tool to learn PowerPoint animations.
It’s easy to add an animation to your PowerPoint presentation. After you’ve finished inputting all your content into a PowerPoint file, begin adding your animations:
- Click on an object to select it on any slide. This could be an image, chart, or block of text.
- Now, find the Animations tab on the ribbon. This is the control center for PPT animation.
- Find the Animation menu, which has star icons on it. Each one represents an animation effect.
- Click on one of the animation effects to add it to the selected object. In this example, I’m going to click on Fade so that the text fades in.
You’ll know that a slide contains animation when a small orange box with a number appears on the slide. Preview your animations by clicking on the Preview button on the far-left side of the PPT Animation tab.
Your animation will play when you switch to Slide Show mode. Each time you click the mouse button or press a button on a presentation “clicker,” the slide will advance. This could mean going on to the next slide or animating in the next slide object.
That’s it! You’ve added your first animation to PowerPoint. Practice how to add animation in PowerPoint with another element, such as a chart or image. Let’s look at other PPT animations.
Explore PowerPoint Animation Styles
PowerPoint has a great variety of styles with which to animate objects on your slides. With the animation presets you can quickly bring an object on or off a slide with one click.
On the Animations tab of the ribbon, there are many one-click styles to apply to an image. Scroll down in this menu to view them. See the screenshot below for the full list of animations:
When you think of how to add animation in PowerPoint, be creative. And don’t hesitate to try out different ideas. You have countless options. As you design one presentation after another, you’ll want to explore your options. This panel lets you do exactly that. It’s how to insert animation on PowerPoint fast.
The names of the slides are also good clues for understanding what the animations will do. “Fly out” causes an object to exit the PowerPoint slide, while “Float In” is indicative of an object coming onto the slide.
Spend time trying out the various PowerPoint animation effects. Click on each one and PowerPoint will play a short preview, right on the slide.
How to Add Your Second PowerPoint Animation
So far, we’ve animated a single object onto our PowerPoint slide. You know how to get a single animation in PowerPoint. Now, let’s learn how to add animation in PowerPoint with a second object.
To add a second PPT animation to a slide, simply select another object. Then, click on one of the animations from the menu again.
Once you add a second animation to a slide, you’ll notice that each animated object has a small number in a box next to it. That number indicates the order the objects will animate in. A box with a “ 1 ” will be animated first, and a “ 2 ” will be animated after it.
What if you want to change the order of our animations? In PPT, how to add animation also includes sequencing steps. Read on to find out about sequencing the animation in PPT options.
How to Sequence Your PowerPoint Animations
You’ve just learned how to animate slides in PowerPoint. With an array of effects added, you’ve built an animated slide that’s ready to share!
But first, you may want to change the sequence of the animations. In other words, you want to adjust the order in which they appear.
In this example, I want the text box reading “Global Growth” to fly in first. Then, I want it to be followed by the image of the factory on the right. Fortunately, this is easy to do with Microsoft PowerPoint. To start, be sure you’re working on the Animations tab on the ribbon. Then, click on the button labeled Animation Pane.
You’ll see a sidebar menu open on the right side of your PowerPoint window. This is the Animation Pane. Think of it as the control center for animations in PowerPoint. It’s ready to help you re-sequence animations fast.
Right now, the photo shows a “1” beside it. This indicates that it comes onto the slide first. The “Global Growth” text comes in second, noted by the number “2” next to it.
On the Animation Pane , all that we need to do is drag and drop to re-sequence the animations. If I want the text to come in first, I’ll move it up in the list of my animations. Simply click and drag on its title in the Animation Pane to move it into a new position.
Notice that the number beside the text box animation changes from a “2” to a “1”. This indicates that it is now the first animated object on the slide.
When you’re managing many objects on a single slide, the Animation Pane is helpful. It can help you visualize the order in which objects are entering or leaving your PowerPoint slide. Plus, you can quickly reorder them by dragging and dropping them.
Control How to Animate Slides in PowerPoint
It’s key to learn how to get animation in PowerPoint that fits your needs. For example, it’s a great idea to alter the duration and triggers for animations. Add animation to PowerPoint in these cases for an attention-getter.
By default, PowerPoint assigns standard values to various types of animation. Often, this is the perfect timing. But in other cases, you might want to make adjustments.
Similarly, you can change what triggers an animation. By default, animations start On Click. This means that your cursor or clicker causes each animation to start.
Again, it’s useful, but it also means that you have to start each animation manually. If you’ve sequenced animations, you may want them to automatically start one after the other.
To make these changes, select an animated object and return to the Animations tab. On the right side, you’ll see the Timing section. Here, you can change the starting trigger by opening the Start dropdown. Duration and delay settings can be adjusted using the menus below.
When to Use Animations in Your PowerPoint Presentations
Here’s the thing: presentations aren’t about animations or how fancy your slides are. They’re all about holding your audience’s attention.
This quote from one of my favorite movies is a great way to think about using animations:
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could , they didn’t stop to think if they should. ” – Jurassic Park
Just because you can add animations doesn’t mean you should. Are they improving your presentation or distracting your audience from your message?
Using too many animations is distracting. When you’ve got objects flying in and out of the slide, you’ll lose the attention of your audience. Less is more while you learn how to insert animation on PowerPoint.
Here are four key principles for applying animations in PowerPoint tastefully:
- Keep objects off-screen until you’re ready to talk about them.
- If you put everything on the slide at once, your audience will stop paying attention to what you’re saying and focus on the text.
- Use simple transitions such as Appear or Fade to keep your slides simple and clean.
- Limit your animations to one or two per slide to maintain simplicity.
What is the definition of animation in Microsoft PowerPoint that goes too far? Anytime the animation supersedes the content, it’s time to rethink things.
So, when should you use presentation animation in PowerPoint? I find it most useful when:
- I’m kicking off my slides. When you think of how to put animation in PowerPoint, start at the beginning. An opening animation is a great way to grab audience focus right away.
- I’m moving from idea to idea. Animations add a clear visual transition. They’re a good tool when you’re changing topics or moving from point to point.
- I need to add emphasis. Animations are best used to emphasize ideas. They add motion, which captures the viewer’s attention. When used sparingly, they’re a powerful way to highlight what matters.
Play the presentation to yourself before presenting it. If you feel like you’ve got too many animations on your slide, consider removing some of them.

Best Slide Transitions And Animations For Business Presentations
Most, if not all, presentation software offer plenty of slide transitions and animations. But which ones should you use for your business presentations? Should you go for the simple fade animation? Or would the fancy boomerang and bouncing effects be better? Well, continue reading because that’s what you’re going to find out in this article!
Animations vs Transitions: What’s the Difference?
You may think animations and transitions refer to the same thing – they don’t. Transitions refer to slide transitions or the animation that occurs when you transition from one slide to the next. Transition effects are applied to the whole slide. Thus, you can only choose a single transition effect to a slide. So, if you have 15 slides in your slideshow, then you can have 15 different transition effects.
Animations , on the other hand, refer to object or element animation. You can animate the text, any charts or tables, images, shapes, icons, etc. on your slides. You can animate every single element on your slide and add various effects, if you so desire. But, of course, I don’t recommend this unless you want everyone to get a migraine!
So, now you know the difference between transitions and animations. It’s time to show you where you can find these in 3 of the most popular presentation software today: PowerPoint, Keynote, and Google Slides.
Where to Find Transition Effects?
Look for the Transitions tab in the toolbar. As you can see, transitions are categorized into three: Subtle, Exciting, and Dynamic. Click on the effect you want to use and you’ll get a quick preview of how it looks like on your slide.
For Keynote users, you can access the different transition options by clicking on a slide in the navigation pane (step 1 in the screenshot below). Then click the Animate button (step 2). Finally, click on the blue Add an Effect button (step 3). You can set the duration and direction as well as when you want to start the transition.
- Google Slides
If you’re a Google Slides user, you’ll find your transition effects by first clicking on a slide in the navigation pane (step 1). Then look for the Transition button in the menu bar (step 2). The Transitions pane will appear on the right. Choose from the 7 different transition options (step 3) as you see below:
Where to Find Animation Effects?
This is what the Animations tab look like in PowerPoint. It’s categorized into Entrance, Emphasis, Exit (not shown), and Motion Paths (not shown). If you want to view the complete list of animations, then check out the extra options inside the red box below.
You can access the different object animation options by first clicking on the object you want to animate (step 1). Then click on the Animate button (step 2). As you can see below, there are three tabs: Build In, Action, Build Out (step 3). These 3 are the Keynote equivalent to PowerPoint’s Entrance, Emphasis, and Exit effects.
In Google Slides, you would also need to click first on the object you want to animate. Right-click and select Animate to access the Transitions side panel. Then click on Add Animation like you see below:
Just like the Transition effects, you only have a limited number of object animation options in Google Slides (13 to be exact).
Why Use Animations and Transitions in Your Presentation?
Here are a few good reasons why you should consider adding animations and transitions to your PowerPoint (and Keynote / Google Slides) presentations:
- Enhance your presentation’s appearance
You don’t need to add any effects to your presentation. But, I promise you, if you use the right animation and transition effects, you can transform your entire presentation’s appearance. From boring to fun and even dramatic, it’s all possible with animations and transitions.
- Emphasize key points
This is especially easy to do with object animation. For example, if you’re presenting a numbered list or some bullet points, you can set each point to appear one after the other. This means you get some time to discuss each point without your audience reading ahead to the next items on your list.
- Control the pace
When you show everything at once on the screen, then it’s a given that everyone will know what you’re about to say. However, with animations, you can control the pace of your presentation. You can build up some ‘drama.’ When the time comes for the big ‘reveal,’ use the right animation to achieve your desired effect!
- Grab people’s attention
Animations and slide transitions are useful in grabbing people’s attention. Even if your audience isn’t looking directly at the screen, any slight movement on your slides can get them to look at your slides again. Use animations sparingly though. You don’t want people to stop looking at your slides altogether simply because they literally felt sick from watching your animations!
Best Practices When Adding Transitions and Animations to Slides
You’ve probably heard of “death by PowerPoint” by now. Well, do you know its cousin, “motion sickness by PowerPoint?” If you’ve ever sat on a presentation which used tons of transitions and animations, and found yourself a bit dizzy after, then you’ve experienced motion sickness.
I’m sure you don’t want to subject your audience to this unpleasant feeling. For best results, follow these practices when adding various animations to your slides:
- Keep it simple
Yes, there are tons of fancy animation options in PowerPoint, but it doesn’t mean you need to use most, or all, of them in your presentation. Can you imagine how your audience is going to react when they see you’ve added an animation effect to every single element on each slide? It would be a disaster, I can assure you.
Let’s say you’ve got 10-20 elements (text, images, icons, shapes, etc.) on each slide. And you add entry, emphasis and exit animation effects to each element . This translates to at least 30 animations on just a single slide! If I were sitting in your presentation, I’d be walking out after the first slide (yes, it’s that bad).
- Ask yourself this question: would this animation make my presentation better?
When answering this question, try to be as objective as possible. Sure, adding fancy effects may look “cool.” But not if it’s at your audience’s expense. With that said, if your answer is “yes,” then, by all means, go ahead and add the animation. Otherwise, it’s best to forego adding that particular effect.
- Use the same transition effect for all slides
In line with the principle of keeping things simple, it’s best to use a single transition effect for all your slides. It can get confusing for your audience if you mix it up. For example, if you decide to use a simple fade transition, then consider using that for all your slides. Here’s how you do this in PowerPoint:
In the Transition pane, choose the effect you want to use. Then click the Apply To All button, like you see below:
Unfortunately, Keynote doesn’t have the same shortcut button for transitions. So, if you want to apply the same transition effect to all slides, you’d need to manually select all the slides in the slide navigator. You can use the keyboard shortcut: command + a . Then click on the Animate button and select the transition effect you want to use for all slides. Here’s a screenshot of the different transition effects in Keynote:
For Google Slides users, you’re in luck. Because just like PowerPoint, you can apply the same transition effect to all your slides. Simply click the Transition button to open up the Transitions pane. Then, select your preferred transition effect and click that magic Apply to all slides button. Here’s how it looks like:
- Preview the animations
Preview all the animations you’ve added and try to look at your presentation slides objectively. When you practice your speech, time the animations to coincide with what you’re saying. Or, say, for instance, make an object appear or exit with your timed pauses.
It shouldn’t take you more than a second or two to decide if an animation actually adds value to your presentation. If it distracts from the main point, then perhaps you may want to replace it with a non-headache-inducing effect. Or better yet, totally remove it from the slide.
Fine-tune your animation if you need to. At the end of the day, it’s your audience who’s going to decide if your presentation is awesome or if it’s a total bust. Remember, no one’s going to complain if you use zero animations on your slides. But trust me, you’re going to hear something negative if you use one too many!
The Top Slide Transitions and Animations for Business Presentations
The saying “less is more” holds absolutely true in all kinds of presentations. You don’t want to crowd your slides with too much information. You don’t want it to look like there are a million things going on in there.
Why? Because it distracts from your role as a speaker and presenter. You want people’s attention to be on you and what you’re saying – not on your slides. PowerPoint slides are supposed to be used as mere visual aids. They’re not the star of your presentation – YOU ARE!
With that said, below are the top transitions and animations that are most commonly used in PowerPoint business presentations. For Keynote and Google Slides users, use animations that are similar to the effects outlined below:
Best Transition Animations in PowerPoint
- Fade – this is an old favorite among business presenters. The previous slide will ‘fade’ away to reveal the next slide. You can choose to have the previous slide fade smoothly or have it fade through black.
- Push – this effect makes the previous slide ‘push’ the new slide into view. You can use this effect to connect related slides. For instance, if your timeline spans two slides, then you can use this effect to let your audience know the slides are connected. You can choose from 4 different effect options: push from the bottom, left, right, and top.
- Cut – this actually works like a much faster fade effect. The previous slide will disappear almost instantly and the current slide will appear in its place.
- Cover – this is a relatively simple transition effect. The new slide will essentially cover the previous slide. You can choose to have the new slide move in from 8 different directions.
- Uncover – this is the exact opposite of the Cover effect. Instead of the new slide moving in and covering the previous slide, it’s going to be the previous slide moving out of the way to quickly reveal the new slide.
Best Animation Effects in PowerPoint
As mentioned earlier, there are several object animations you can choose from in PowerPoint. These are categorized into 4: entrance, emphasis, exit and motion paths animation.
For business presentations, it’s important to not get caught up at the prospect of having multiple options at your fingertips. I know it’s easier said than done, but think of how much time you can save if you don’t overthink your animation options.
That being said, I do realize that presentations aren’t equal and some fancy effects may be necessary to get your point across. But for the most part, basic animation effects are usually enough for business presentations.
Entrance Animation Effects
If you don’t want your slide elements to appear all at once, then you may want to add entrance animation to some objects. You can set it to start (1) on click, (2) with previous animation, or (3) after the previous animation. You can also set how long you want the animation to last (duration), or even apply a delay to your animation.
Go to Animations > More Entrance Effects for a complete list of effects in this category. Here’s a screenshot of all available entrance effects in PowerPoint:
Appear , Fade and Wipe entrance animation effects are great (and simple) options if you want to animate something in your business slides.
Emphasis Animation Effects
One of the best ways to draw attention to a specific object on your slide is to use an emphasis animation effect. These effects can only be applied to objects that are already on the slide. So, if you’ve applied entrance animation to the same object, then the emphasis effect is going to happen AFTER it’s made an entry and is already on the slide. Also, objects with emphasis effect aren’t going to disappear from your slide (that’s what the exit animation effect is for).
Go to Animations > More Emphasis Effects for a complete list of effects in this category. Here’s a screenshot of all options:
Note that not all emphasis effects are going to be available for all kinds of elements. For example, if you want to animate an image , then options like Font Color, Bold Flash, Brush Color, etc. are going to be greyed out and will be unclickable. If you want to animate a certain shape, then Shimmer, Underline, Grow With Color, etc. are not going to be available, and so on.
For most business presentations, go over the available Basic and Subtle emphasis effects first (but skip the Grow/Shrink and Spin options). Remember, you want to add value to your presentation, not give your audience a headache!
Exit Animation Effects
Exit animations are used if you want an element to disappear from your slide. This is especially helpful if you’re trying to convey a point where a specific element is no longer needed.
Go to Animations > More Exit Effects for a complete list of available effects in PowerPoint. Here’s what it looks like:
For business presentations, the best exit animations are Disappear, Dissolve Out, Wipe, Fade, Float Down, and Float Up. The objects will exit from the slide, but won’t cause visual anxiety to your audience.
Motion Path Animation Effects
PowerPoint may not be known as an animation software. But if you know how to use motion path animation, then you can easily take your presentation to the next level. You can use it to tell effective stories and demonstrate certain points in your presentation. If you want to understand more about how motion path animation works, and how you can use it to make your presentation stand out, then I recommend you read this article .
For a complete list of motion path effects, go to Animations > More Motion Paths . Here’s a screenshot:
Adding Sound Effects to Animations
Sound effects may not be necessary for most business presentations. But in cases where you absolutely need to add some sound effects to your slide animations, then here’s how:
1. Click on the element you want to animate
2. Go to the Animations tab and choose your animation
3. Click on Animation Pane (still in the Animations tab)
4. In the Animation Pane , click on the animation you want to add the sound effect to. A small triangle will appear on the right. Click on this triangle to reveal more options. Then click on Effect Options .
5. In the Effect tab, click on Sound and choose from the available options. Then click OK.
For Mac PowerPoint users, the same steps will apply. However, the interface will look different from Windows. Here’s where you can find the Sound effects for your selected animation:
Just like all the other animation effects I’ve discussed in this article, it’s best to use sound effects sparingly. If it’s not going to add any value to your presentation, then consider not using it at all.
Many business presentations should follow the ‘less is more’ principle. Don’t depend on animations to impress your audience as it can quickly backfire. Instead, focus on getting them to listen to you and engage with you throughout your presentation.

How to Customize Animated PowerPoint Templates
We've talked a lot about PPT animation templates in this article. As you can see, they're effective ways to save time and use the best animations that aren't native to PowerPoint.
This section will show you that PowerPoint animation templates are the starting point. They're totally customizable!
We're going to customize three slides in three steps each. Let's get started:
1. The Testimonial Slide
Slide 34 is a great way to show user feedback. Testimonials share potential clients that what you offer is proven to help others. This one's clean and it's easy to customize. Here's how:
- Add an image . Click on the image placeholder, then browse to a replacement.
- Update text . Include a user's testimonial to really drive the user experience to a potential customer.
- Slim down the text . We always coach presenters to reduce the total amount of text on a slide.
2. The Animated Chart
We're always advising our readers to use charts and graphs to show data. And as we shared in a tip earlier, animation takes a chart to the next level. Here's how to customize slide 14, an animated chart.
- Update data . Right-click the existing chart and choose Edit Data to open an embedded Excel window. Then, type over the placeholder data and your chart will update in realtime.
- Add your image . The default slide is designed to show a candidate's skill set. But there's no reason that you couldn't show other data in action. Either way, click on the image placeholder and browse to a replacement.
- Update text . Each text box is waiting for your copy. All you've got to do is type inside and fill in your details. Get creative with how to show your data.
3. The Three Box Portfolio
A portfolio is always a chance to put your best work front-and-center. Slide 19 is a great way to show your three favorite works with enough animation. Let's customize it:
- Update portfolio pieces . Click on the image placeholders and browse to the images or screenshots to add your favorite portfolio items.
- Update the branding . Click on any of the shapes on this slide, then choose the Format > Shape Fill dropdown ribbon option to choose a color that matches your preference.
- Update the text . As always, it only takes a few seconds to type over the text placeholders to add your specifics. Give your portfolio items a brief, one-line description.
5 Quick PowerPoint Animation Tips for 2023
Here's what you've already learned:
- There are free animated PPT templates out there. Sometimes, they're "good enough" for your presentation.
- Premium PowerPoint animation templates give you smoother animations.
No matter what type of template you choose, it helps to have tips to work with animated PowerPoint templates. For these tips, we'll be working with the premium template, HEXA - PowerPoint Presentation Template .
Here are five of our top tips for presenters of all skill levels:
1. Adjust PowerPoint Animation Sequencing
Arguably the most important part is sequencing your animations correctly. After all, you don't want to show the punchline of a joke first, right?
To adjust your animation sequencing, make sure you're on the Animations tab. Click Animation Pane on the ribbon. Each box on the right side corresponds to the order of an object's animation. Drag-and-drop to sequence them in the proper order.
2. Use Animations Sparingly
This tip might come as a surprise. An entire article centered around animations, yet now we're suggesting that you skip most animations?
The point of animation is to stand out from the rest of the content in your presentation. If you start adding animation to every element, you're likely to overwhelm an audience.
Less is more. Use only one to two key animations per slide to keep your slides readable.
3. Adjust an Animation's Duration
An animation's duration refers to the speed at which it plays. Adjust it by selecting an object, then making sure you're on the Animations panel.
Change the Duration time box, shown in the upper right corner of the screenshot below. Click Preview to play it.
4. Add Animations to Infographics
More presenters than ever use infographics to explain those complex ideas, visually.
Herein lies the power of PowerPoint animations. When you build an infographic to explain ideas, you're leveraging graphics to explain ideas. Your audience is sure to appreciate that.
To take the idea to the next level, use animations to stage the infographic onto the slide in steps. Showing the content one step at a time makes it easier to understand.
Learn more about infographics with the help of our guide below:
5. Use Slide Transitions
The focus of this tutorial was to add animations or motion that affect slide objects. There's another type of animation that many presenters use: slide transitions.
Slide transitions are the animations that play to transform one slide into the next. They're a good way to re-capture the audience's attention and shift to a new talking point.
To add a slide transition, jump to the Transitions tab and choose an animation effect. You'll instantly see a preview. Try to stick to simple animations, much like the tips we've already shared for object animations.

Best practices for making awesome PowerPoint slides
Whether you’re presenting a slideshow to your executives, clients, or peers, you want to convey your message clearly and successfully, and at the very least prove that you know how to use PowerPoint . Unfortunately, many mistakes can be made when creating PowerPoint presentations.
Choose the fonts wisely
Select pleasing colors.
- Don’t overuse animations and effects
Use a standard presentation rule
From hard-to-read fonts to colors that hurt the eyes of your audience, here are some best practices to keep in mind for your next PowerPoint slideshow.
Using a fancy, dramatic, or even whimsical font can be tempting. But you must consider the readability of the font. You want your audience to easily see your headings and bullet points. Consider the two basic font styles: serif and sans serif.
Serif fonts are more decorative, have a classic appearance, and are frequently used in print publications. Each letter has a stroke that extends from a point in the letter. Popular serif styles include Times New Roman, Garamond, Georgia, and Baskerville.
Sans serif fonts are more precise, have a clean appearance, and are frequently used in digital publications. Each letter is clear-cut without wings or curves at its points. Popular sans serif styles include Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, and Calibri.
Because of the extended strokes, serif fonts can appear a bit blurry on a screen. This makes a sans serif font the favored choice. The bottom line is that you should remain consistent and use the same type, serif or sans serif, for all fonts in the slideshow.
The colors you use in your PowerPoint presentation can be just as important as the content. You want to use those that enhance the appearance of the slideshow, not distract or give your audience a headache.
As Microsoft’s Robert Lane explains in his article about combining colors in PowerPoint, mixing red and blue or red and green can cause eye strain. Plus, red and green mixtures are difficult to see for those with color blindness.
The article mentions that warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows are eye-catching, whereas cool colors like blues, greens, and purples draw less attention. Additionally, lighter colors are more noticeable than dark.
One of the easiest ways to choose the colors for your presentation is to use a built-in theme. Select the Design tab and you’ll see a collection of Themes in the ribbon.
Once you select a theme, you can then use the Variants section to choose a different color scheme. Each scheme includes eight complementing colors. You can also pick the font style you want to use in the Variants drop-down menu.
Tip : You can also check out the Design Ideas if you need help with the layouts for your slides.
Don’t overuse animations and effects
Animations can be attention-grabbing additions to a slideshow. But if you overuse or misuse them, they can be detrimental to your presentation and actually turn off viewers. The best thing to do is consider your audience and slideshow’s purpose.
For instance, if you are presenting the slideshow to a classroom of 8-year-old students, animations can grab and hold their attention more than simple images or words. However, if you’re presenting to your company’s executive team or board of directors, animations can come across as unprofessional. Also, be wary of embedding videos in PowerPoint — only do so when relevant.
If you really want to include animations, make them subtle or purposeful. As an example, you may want to expand on each bullet point in your list. You can create an animation to display the bullet points one by one and only when you click.
To do this, select the first bullet point, go to the Animations tab, and choose the Appear effect. Then, in the Timing section of the ribbon, choose On click in the Start drop-down list. Do the same for each bullet point in your list.
This creates a simple animation that benefits your presentation. It doesn’t distract but instead keeps your audience focused on your current talking point.
What is the 10/20/30 rule of PowerPoint? What is the five-by-five rule? What about the 5/5/5 and seven-by-seven rules? Rules, rules, rules. These are different standards that many recommend using when it comes to creating PowerPoint presentations.
- The 10/20/30 rule : Have no more than 10 slides, a presentation no longer than 20 minutes, and a font size no smaller than 30 points.
- The five-by-five rule : Have no more than five words per line and five lines per slide.
- The 5/5/5 rule : Have no more than five words per line, five lines per slide, and five text-heavy slides in a row.
- The seven-by-seven rule : Have no more than seven words per line and seven lines per slide.
What each of these rules basically means is: Keep it simple.
The first rule, 10/20/30, is a good rule to follow for your overall presentation. While it may not always be possible, the more succinct a presentation, the more successful it will be.
The last three rules are helpful ones to follow when you’re adding text to your slides. As you know, presentations are visual. Using too much text means your audience is reading more than watching.
Hopefully, these best practices will help you create a memorable and effective slideshow. For other ways to enhance your presentation, look at how to add audio to the slides or how to include music in PowerPoint .

If you're using Microsoft Office on your Windows PC, then you might want to keep your eye out for potential new security issues.
Microsoft has just backtracked on a decision it made earlier in 2022, and will no longer be blocking Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macros in Office files by default across Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Visio.
Microsoft needs your help to shape the future of its Office suite of products. Five new default fonts are in the works for Microsoft 365 -- which covers Word, Excel, and PowerPoint -- and Microsoft is seeking out feedback for which one is best.
The five new potential default font families are now available as a download for testing and have various themes. The list includes fonts with the unique names of Tenorite, Bierstadt, Skeena, Seaford, and Grandview. There's a separate artist behind each one, and the designs span different geometric, human, and industrial shapes, according to Microsoft.
Many of the apps from the Microsoft 365 suite now run natively on Apple's new M1-powered MacBooks. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote are now all able to take full advantage of Apple's custom ARM-based silicon.
These new Microsoft 365 apps for Apple M1 Macs are all universal apps, which means that they will also run on traditional Macs with Intel processors. This also means that the Office apps on Apple's M1 Macs -- like the new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini -- should all feel snappier and faster than when they were previously running under emulation with Rosetta 2.
