Monster Hunter: World Lunastra: how to fight it, what is its weakness
Yet another monster has been introduced to Monster Hunter: World, and this time it is other half of the Elder Dragon power couple - Lunastra. This azure variant on Teostra is more powerful, more prone to erupting into a fiery inferno, and its blue flame patches can have some utterly bizarre interactions with other Elder Dragon attacks. This guide will go over the strengths and weaknesses, as well as all these interactions that you should be aware of going in, while of course keeping your distance.
Monster Hunter: World Lunastra guide
Since you will eventually be fighting two separate Elder Dragons at the same time that don't want to kill each other, you'll need all the help you can get. For those looking to get some more tips on everything from combat to items, head on over to our Monster Hunter World guide hub.
If you are looking for specifically Monster Hunter World Iceborne guides , then we have created a separate guide hub for just expansion stuff. Head over to our Monster Hunter World Iceborne guide to make your start.
Lunastra's weaknesses and resistances
Lunastra has similar weak points and break points to Teostra, but some of the weaknesses have been switched around. Bladed weapons work well on the wings, while blunt weapons and ranged weapons are effective against the face and tail respectively. It also switches the ailment susceptibility of poison with blast, so it's more effective to use blast-based weapons. Stun still affects it well.
Finally, it still features the elemental resistance to fire, but Lunastra is weakest to ice, then dragon. Interestingly, while water is only moderately effective against Lunastra, it's arguably better than using Thunder for a completely unrelated reason, so if your choice is down to either of these two elements, I'd definitely go with the Water weapon over the Thunder one.
Unlocking the Lunastra quest
First and foremost, you'll need to reach Hunter Rank 16. This means you have at the very least completed the main story by defeating Xeno'jiiva and saving the new world. If you're struggling with this baby Elder Dragon, head to our Monster Hunter: World Xeno'jiiva guide to learn more about how to defeat it.
Step 1: Complete the Special Assignment "The Blazing Sun"
Upon first receiving the update, you'll be asked to speak to the Huntsman near the council table. He's indicated by the blue exclamation point on the map in Astera. He'll inform you that Teostra has left the Elder's Recess and has appeared in the Wildspire Waste.
You'll then need to hunt it down, which you can find out more about in our Monster Hunter: World Teostra guide, but the key thing about this fight is that you can use the hills to slide down and leap on it to knock it prone. You can also deal some big damage if you're using dual blades and doing that spinning attack along its back.
Step 2: Complete the Special Assignment "Pandora's Arena"
After killing the Teostra, you'll report into the Huntsman who commends you on your efforts. You'll then hear that another injured Teostra has entered the arena, so you're tasked with killing it once more. However this is not how it turns out.
Taking on this mission requires a lot of preparation and luck if you're tackling it solo. You only have 15 minutes to drive away Lunastra from the arena after it successfully repels the Nergigante and allows the injured Teostra to escape. She's a very angry beast, but the location she's in has two traps that can be triggered. One side of the arena has a lever that thrusts two prongs to deal a ton of damage, while the other drops boulders from the ceiling and knocks her prone. It's not really worth going for cannons or ballistae in this fight since Lunastra is just a bit too fast for those to be effective. Once you're done, you'll report into the Huntsman who tells you both Teostra and Lunastra have been located in the Elder's Recess. Once you've finished the mission "No Remorse, No Surrender", locating Lunastra outside of missions should be easier.
How to fight Lunastra
There are some items I would consider mandatory that you take with you if you're taking on Lunastra. Firstly, you should take some Cool Drinks to counter the damage you'll take when it heats up. It's also very much worth taking Astera Jerky as Lunastra's most powerful attack - the Supernova - initially does a fair bit of chip damage that you can fully heal with a single Astera Jerky. Flash pods aren't as useful for interrupting attacks as they are for Teostra. Her Supernova attack will be temporarily interrupted when the flash pod hits, but this is the only real affect as she will just go for it again.
Lunastra has a fair few attacks. Its Supernova is the big one, which it triggers by floating in the air and erupting once to produce flames on the ground and cause an unbearable heat for chip damage, before erupting once more to take down anything in the blast radius. It's certainly more powerful than Teostra's blast, but the chip damage can be healed with an Astera Jerky and there's a way to counter it before it happens: Crystalbursts. Make sure that at some point in this fight you head to the crystal room and pick up some up. This ammunition when it hits Lunastra can interrupt many of her more dangerous attacks from the air.
She also has an aerial charge that can either be dodged or negated with a Crystalburst, as well as vicious tail swipes, pounces, flamethrowers, and bites. Normally it's best to keep your distance and only attack when she leaves herself open, as this ensures you're not vulnerable to any of her more damaging ones. She's very similar to Teostra in this respect, but can do a bit more damage if you get hit.
One very weird thing about Lunastra is to do with its flames that appear on the ground. Let's say you have a fire-based weapon and attack the pockets of flames on the ground. This will make the patch erupt into a blue blaze, which for some inexpiable reason repels ranged weapon shots. Be wary of this if you're using ranged weapons, making sure that you find the gaps in the flames to shoot at Lunastra. Alternatively if you hit the patches with a water-based weapon, they'll disappear, but only if they've not been hit by a fire-based attack first.
Another interaction you should be aware of is when Kushala Daora comes to ruin your day. The tornadoes it produces when it takes to the skies will pick up the ground-based fires, turning an already annoying attack into a column of fire that deals a lot of damage to those that run into it. The only way to get rid of it is to fire a Crystalburst into it, which if you're following the guide to the letter you should be picking up whenever you can. Also be aware that the Turf War with Nergigante will result in an eruption from Lunastra, so keep your distance.
Fighting Lunastra and Teostra in "No Remose, No Surrender"
This Elder Dragon is the first one in the game to have a bond with another Elder Dragon - namely Teostra, as they are mates, so you'll definitely want to recap on how to defeat him in our Monster Hunter: World Teostra guide. Your first proper fight with the Elder Dragon (one where it doesn't flee halfway through at least) will be in the Elder's Recess. Fighting two Elder Dragons, hard ones at that that are working together to ensure your demise, can be very galling at times. My first tip for this is to not do this mission alone. You'll certainly want to fire off an SOS Flare if you're jumping in, or at the very least bring some friends for the ride. More on that in our Monster Hunter: World PC multiplayer guide.
If the two are ever separated, make sure you wail on Teostra first as he's arguably the easier one of the two to take down. Otherwise you'll need to time your attacks very carefully to ensure the other Elder Dragon doesn't blast you with fire attacks while you're not focused on dodging. Since Teostra is very vulnerable to flash pods when it's preparing to erupt, make sure to bring them with you for him. Just don't use them on Lunastra as she will her supernova attack
If you ever see the message on the right hand side that you've obtained 60 research points each for seeing Teostra and Lunastra's bond with each other, run! Run as far away as is physically possible and hope that it's enough. Their Hypernova attack is essentially what happens when a Teostra and Lunastra get... intimate. They do a dance in the air, resulting in a duo of blasts that would easily kill any hunter unfortunate enough to not be wearing a Fireproof Mantle or is out of the blast radius. On top of that, Lunastra's attack keeps going as the flames still litter the landscape and she erupts once more to finish her part of the attack. This is an incredibly rare event,
What materials can I get from Lunastra?
Since Lunastra is an Elder Dragon, you can't capture it. Partnering up with others (as detailed in our To learn more about teaming up with others, you can refer to our Monster Hunter: World PC multiplayer guide) is the way forward. As for how to use the items you can loot from Lunastra, you can either check out our Monster Hunter: World combat guide or our Monster Hunter: World armour guide. In the list below, the stars indicate the frequency in which the item in question will drop, as well as details on whether some items are obtained by breaking a specific part of the monster.

Another Elder Dragon has fallen at your feet and it really is quite the feat to defeat two Elder Dragons at the same time! Monster Hunter World Lunastra Guide: Everything You'll Need to Know About the Lunastra Update
Update : Lunastra was originally made available for the PC version of Monster Hunter World on November 22.
Earlier this week, Capcom released the next major "Title Update" - Title Update 4.0 - to Monster Hunter World, including the game's 3rd extra DLC Monster - Lunastra.
Players who have downloaded this latest patch now have access to the Special Assignments that eventually unlock Lunastra's optional quests, but what sets her apart from her contemporary - Teostra? As always, we took to the hunt to see how she slots into the ongoing Monster Hunter: World experience.
What's new in the Lunastra Update
Much like with Deviljho's launch back in March, Lunastra's launch co-incides with a large supply of new content. Lunastra brings a few new Turf Wars to the table, new weapons, and two new sets of armor for both male and female hunters. Here's all of what you can expect;
- New, Lunastra weapons for each of the game's 14 weapon classes. Complete with new stats, new models, and of course new materials dropped from the beast itself that are required to craft and upgrade these tools.
- New armor sets for both the male and female hunter. Much like the other High Rank armor sets, the Lunastra set includes an Alpha and Beta set, that both look different as well as offer slightly differing stats and armor skills.
- Lunastra includes her own specific side quest, which requires players to have already unlocked their Hunter Rank for the first time, and then speak with The Huntsman. After taking on a Teostra in the Wildspire Wastes, you'll be tasked with a quest at the forge to drive away the same Teostra from the Arena. Upon arrival, however, you'll instead be tasked with repelling the Lunastra within a 15 minute timespan. Completing this objective will award players with the final Special Assignment tasking players to hunt down both a Lunastra and a Teostra at once. Once completed, players will then be able to hunt Lunastra in her own optional quests.
How to Find Lunastra / Unlock Her Special Assignment
Lunastra is now available to anyone hunting that have already cleared the games final hunt - Xeno'jiiva - and have unlocked their HR at least once. As mentioned in the last section, players will be tasked with several special assignments before being granted the ability to hunt Lunastra freely:
- After reaching Hunter Rank 16 or above by hunting Xeno'jiiva, talk to The Huntsmen to receive the Special Assignment "The Blazing Sun" - a hunt against a Teostra in the Wildspire Waste.
- Upon completion of the Special Assignment, speak to The Huntsmen to be alerted to commotion ongoing at the forge. Speak to the Second Fleet Master to receive the next Special Assignment, "Pandora's Arena". This tasks you with dealing enough damage to the Lunastra within the Arena to repel it within the allotted time.
- Finally, talk to The Hunstmen once more to receive the last Special Assignment, "No Remorse, No Surrender" - finally you're tasked with hunting both the Lunastra and the Teostra within the Elder's Recess.
Once completed, players gain access to both a solo Lunastra optional hunt titled "Blue Prominence" as well as a duo optional hunt against both Lunastra and Teostra titled "Infernal Monarchy". Good luck hunting!
Battle Tips for Lunastra
Lunastra shares a lot of its moveset with Teostra, in fact in the past its moveset was more or less identical. This time around, however, Lunastra has some unique characteristics that truly creates a unique image for the Empress of Flame.
- If you've fought Teostra enough times, you'll surely have recognized his iconic "Supernova" - a powerful attack that he lets loose a set time after entering rage mode. While you could use flash pods to knock Teostra out of the air before he could unleash his powerful AOE attack, Lunastra will at best ignore them, and at worst flash pods will actually provoke her! Don't bother bringing them when challenging her.
- In addition to being immune to cancelling her "Supernova", Lunastra's variant of the attack lingers and might be especially hard to dodge when you first fight her within the Arena. If you see her charging up, try and rise to the upper floors if you have the chance. While you can probably run far enough away when fighting her outside of the Arena, don't take the chance when you're first tasked with repelling her.
- Instead of lingering blast-inflicting clouds, Lunastra leaves pools of blue flames on the ground. Drink a Cool Drink to limit the damage output from running across them; it builds up fast otherwise. Even with the protection of a Cool Drink, however, try to avoid these pools when you can!
Lunastra's moveset requires a healthy dose of caution to counter. Take special care when first fighting her in the Arena!
A Note About Lunastra
Lunastra, much like Deviljho, is added directly into the existing Monster Hunter: World High Rank experience, despite its initial Hunter Rank 16 requirements. While it does take the spot of the toughest Elder Dragon (though that will probably still depend on personal experience), much like Deviljho, the base Lunastra hunts will probably feel a bit easy if you've become accustomed to hunting Tempred Monsters . Of course, it's still worth hunting her due to the abundance of new weapons she brings to the table, as well as the two new armor sets that hunters can now play with.
As mentioned alongside Lunastra's announcement, some harder end-game content outside of Tempered Elder Dragons and Kulve Taroth is indeed incoming. Arch-Tempered Monsters and the Gamma armor sets that come from defeating them will offer some increased challenge for those that have already mastered everything that Monster Hunter: World has to offer. Kirin's Arch-Tempered quest will be available from June 8th to June 21st, while Vaal Hazak's will be available from June 22nd to July 5th. For now, however, players have Lunastra to whet their appetite with.

The Blazing Sun Special Assignment Monster Hunter World Iceborne
Our next Special Assignment is the quest, The Blazing Sun. Special Assignments unlock additional content, in this case, a new Elder Dragon, Lunastra is unlocked after completing this chain of quests. For this fight though you will be headed to the Wildspire Wastes to hunt a Teostra, the mate of Lunastra. To unlock this quest you’ll need to have completed the prior Special Assignment The Food Chain Dominator .
A Team has spotted Teostra in the Wildspire Waste. I say it’s an opportune time to go and have an audience with the infernal emperor, wouldn’t you say? The Huntsman, Client – Monster Hunter World Iceborne
To make fighting either Teostra much easier you should consider equipping the abilities: Heat Guard and Fire Resistance. Heat Guard will prevent the damage from the Elder Dragons fire aura which drains your hp constantly, making the fight much harder than it needs to be.
If you can also equip three Fire Resistance jewels to get Fire Resistance to max level (presuming your armor was at least fire resistance neutral, to begin with) you will get to +20 Fire Resistance in your armor stats. 20 points of Fire Resistance will allow you to automatically resist the status effect of Fireblight. You’ll also take less damage in the fight overall, as most of Teostra’s attacks use the fire element.
Teostra is weak to Water and Ice elements. Its weak points are the head, wings, and tail. You can break or sever its head, wings, and tail.
High-Rank Teostra Carves
Carves from High-Rank Teostra include; Fire Dragon Scale +, Teostra Carapace, Teostra Claw +, Teostra Horn +, Teostra Mane, Teostra Gem, Teostra Tail, and Teostra Webbing.

Special assignments.
Special Assignments are quests that were added after the initial launch of Monster Hunter World, and thus have no bearing on the main story . However, they offer access to new monsters and, in turn, fantastic new rewards. Here's how Special Assignments work and a list of each of them in Monster Hunter World.
How to Access Special Assignments
Generally, to get a Special Assignment quest to become accessible on the Quest Board, you must first speak to a corresponding NPC. Once you've reached a certain Hunter Rank milestone, you will see a message pop up on the right hand of your screen with a notification.
Look around for an NPC with a blue ! above their head to begin the series of quests. After the Special Assignment is done, a new Optional Quest will be available for the monster.

Effect Duration | 120 (patch 6.02) |
---|---|
Recharge Time | 300 |
Temporal Mantle is a type of Specialized Tool in Monster Hunter World (MHW) .
How to Get Temporal Mantle
- Requirements: HR 16, Talk to the Huntsman and he will give you your first quest, The Blazing Sun , after completing speak to him again, then go to the smith and the armory and talk to them to unlock the second quest, Pandora's Arena and again talk to the trio and finish the last quest. After completing the last quest No Remorse, No Surrender you will then talk to one of the trio to receive it.
- You will need to finish the special assignments The Blazing Sun then Pandora's Arena quests and finally No Remorse, No Surrender.
Temporal Mantle Notes
- The automatic evasion triggers when you are attacked on the ground.
- Each evasion performed by the temporal mantle reduces the effect duration by 20 seconds, granting up to 6 dodges.
- Before Patch 6.02, the mantle has an effect duration of 90 seconds but didn't had the minus 20 seconds penalty, making the player nearly unkillable for a whole 90 seconds every time the mantle was equipped. The mantle was nerfed because players were relying too much on it.
- Grounded evasion will interrupt any animation such as a Greatsword's True Charge Slash.
- The evasion will not trigger against certain damaging effects such as area damage or some monsters bumping into you.
- While airborne, the evasion will trigger without interrupting attacks or animations, making it very useful for the Insect Glaive.
- While grappling on a monster with Clutch claw, the evasion will trigger without interrupting attacks or animations, making it great for safe tenderizing or flinch shots.

Considering this game has the worst iFrames I’ve ever seen when trying to dodge things… I’m glad something like this exists.. I’m considering investing into evade extender and the other one that increases iFrames cause you get absolutely zero dodge capabilites to start out with..
Ah yes, before patch 6.02 this thing was ridiculous.
once you beat a quest, go talk to the person who assigned the quest to progress
Ultra Instinct before nerf
Before iceborne i think it was fine since you had the finish the story to get it but once iceborne came it needed this nerf
who is the trio??
nerfed? i dont care to be honest. never used any mantle never depended on one. i hate using things that are on timers lol.
I didn't this exist until I reach Alatreon...
the smith has no quest for me after completing the first... what to do ?
Alright look, yeah, it got nerfed massively, but it's still good and definitely worth if you're having trouble dodging or get stuck in attack animations.
If people don't like it and think it is to nerfed then just don't use it.
In Iceborne it’s heavily nerfed oof
Compared to newer and older mh games. I believe the reason why they have this cape is due to the fact that moves are alot harder to predict compared to the older games. So they needed a mantle that gives you a giggle switch to avoid most form of dmg.
At the beginning of iceborne i hated the nerf..but now after almost a year i understand that that thing was totally broken, i can't even think why devs put a legit cheat like that in the game.
I think the temporal mantle is not as good as temporal mantle+
if u use this with longsword ur bad
I'm in MR and still havent ever seen this mantle.
TL;DR: Temporal mantle got beaned on and is losing its effectiveness to more deadly monsters due to the increase of chip damage usage
It would be OP for insect glaive if the best combo for insect glaive wasn’t ON THE GROUND, it’s complete BS and ruins the weapon for me
Fun Fact: While wearing this you can’t be thrown off during a ZSD or Clutch Claw, so go for a wall ram flinch or head ZSD the moment you toss this puppy on
Temporal Mantle plus will be unlocked at MR 150 quest
Am I the only one here who still finds the damn thing useful? Even if it was nerfed, it was massively broken in the base game anyway. It still saves me in some hunts. Either adapt or don't. I chose to adapt.
Couldve just reduced the timer
This mantle isn't even worth getting anymore. ***** the nerf
I just make sure I take this thing off when carving so I don’t look stupid..
We called it....the baby blanket
They are nerfing this pretty hard in iceborne. Now if you get hit with it on you lose around 20% max duration. Only thing I'm worried about is that I will never play multiplayer again on hard quests like arch tempered nergi and if it's forced like extreme behemoth it's probably gg with randoms.
So many casuals in here need this mantle. I hope Crapcom learns from their mistake and remove it from future game to filter out*****ters and brainlets in the easiest Monster Hunter game ever made!!!! PS: ***** Capcom and ***** Ryozo. He should be fired and let Miyazaki make Monster Hunter hard again.
I wish I had this in Dark Souls.
what about PC?
You don’t understand how op this thing is for Glaive
Does anyone know if actually getting hit more often with this on decreases the usage time faster?
this is my main
I love this thing.
Totally helpful for Arc monsters!
