What is Expo?

It is a global destination for millions of people to share ideas, showcase innovation, encourage collaboration and celebrate human ingenuity. They are organised every five years and last for six months.

The first World Expo was held in 1851 at London's Crystal Palace and was known as The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. It displayed about 100,00 objects showcasing the inventions from the industrial revolution.

Some of the amazing inventions which were first brought to the world at an expo include the telegraph in London in 1851, the typewriter in Philadelphia in 1876, the diesel engine in Paris in 1900, the colour TV in New York in 1964, IMAX film in Osaka in 1970, and wireless trams in Yeosu in 2012.

The most recent expo, which started in 2015, was held in Milan, Italy, under the theme of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life". Inventions to come out of it include solar trees and energy saving elevators - something which would be useful in the UAE with all of the high-rise buildings.

How did Dubai win?

"Ladies and gentlemen, Dubai wins."

Those were the words in 2013 which brought about scenes of jubilation both in Paris at the general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the international organisation responsible for overseeing, regulating and selecting the candidate for the world fair, and in the UAE where residents were waiting for the outcome of the voting of the 164 nation members entitled to vote.  Dubai won by a resounding majority with 116 votes, leaving Yekaterinburg, Russia, with only 47.

“I am proud of our teams who earned this victory for Dubai with two years of hard work, dedication and commitment,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, said. “We renew our promise to astonish the world in 2020.”

Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State and managing director of the Dubai World Expo 2020 bid committee, had earlier delivered an emotional speech to the BIE committee. She received resounding applause for her 20-minute presentation which contained videos on Dubai's strengths of diversity, infrastructure and stability.

When the victory announcement was made fireworks filled the sky in Dubai as they exploded out of the Burj Khalifa in front of thousands of smiling faces below. Sheikh Mohammed later announced a holiday for all educational institutions across the UAE.

After two years of hard work and planning, Dubai's bid to host Expo 2020 had reached 850 million people through social media, with none of the other contenders coming close according to Fisheye Analytics.

Where is it being held?

The Expo site is located in the area known as Dubai South, close to Al Maktoum International Airport. The site covers 4.38 sq km and has four main entrances. The Dubai Metro Route 2020 will take 46,000 passengers per hour to and from the Expo site in under 16 minutes from Dubai Marina.

What can visitors expect?

Al Wasl Plaza will be the heart of Expo 2020. It is said to bring together a physical manifestation of the main theme of the Expo, which is "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future." Significant events such as the opening and closing ceremonies will be held here.

The public were given their first look in April 2017 at how Al Wasl Plaza is expected to shape up. A dome is set to double up as a 360-degree screen at night, projecting images to thousands of visitors both inside and outside.

The plaza will connect the three thematic districts – Opportunity, Sustainability and Mobility – and the other main concourses, including the Dubai Metro link and the UAE Pavilion, through its seven entrances and exits.

The dome will be 65 metres tall with a diameter of 150m, and will hold an estimated 10,000 visitors, said Ahmed Al Khatib, vice president of property at Expo 2020 Dubai. Filled with fountains, waterfalls, parks and palm-lined courtyards, the dome will be partly open to the sky at the top.

You can read more and see more renderings of Al Wasl Plaze here .

Each participating country will have its own pavilion, while there will also be a pavilion for each of the main themes - sustainability, mobility and opportunity.

How is progress on the site going?

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid took a helicopter ride above the site on August 7, 2017 to get a bird's eye view of the progress. The video showed how the site, which expects to see 25 million visitors, was taking shape with the different districts clearly visible.

Watch the amazing progress made on the ground in the run up to @expo2020dubai #Dubai #UAE pic.twitter.com/SHNWrSR7x7 — Dubai Media Office (@DXBMediaOffice) August 7, 2017

A further birds-eye-view came in the summer of 2018, with structures topped out amid the sea of cranes. The Dubai Metro line was also highlighted in the video below, as it snakes its way from the Expo site towards the city to create a seamless journey for visitors. In March, 2019, the Roads and Transport Authority said the metro extension was on schedule .

To mark two year's to go until the grand opening, The Nationa l visited the Expo site in October to see how much progress had been made.

Infrastructure work had already been completed on deep utilities, sewage, storm water, electricity sub stations, cabling, water lines, telecommunication and roads.

The foundation and structural work was also complete in the three theme districts. About 40,000 workers will be on site daily in 2019 to ensure the project keeps its tight schedule.

In April, 2018, Luxembourg became the first country to break ground on the construction of its pavilion . It is designed by architects Metaform and its design features a ramp to all floors with an overall spiral shape, within which there will be multiple areas for exhibiting and a restaurant.

A month later, New Zealand's design was revealed . It will tell the story of New Zealand's kaitiakitanga - the care and connection between land and people.

New Zealand has revealed its pavilion design, showcasing its unique approach to sustainability through ‘kaitiakitanga’, which tells the story of deep kinship between humans and nature. Then, in September, Germany unveiled its pavilion , complete with a "vertical campus" that will show off the latest in sustainable design and artificial intelligence.

Saudi Arabia was the latest country to unveil its pavilion , which it says will be used to promote its drive to attract tourists and businesses to the kingdom.

What will the legacy be?

According to the official Expo 2020 website, the legacy plans are "wide-ranging and ambitious". "We hope to stimulate the development of a knowledge economy here in Dubai, anchored to the Expo site itself, which will continue, after the event, to be a destination that attracts visitors, students and companies and is home to a combination of organisations including strategic industries, specialised technology companies, social entities and education facilities," it says. More than 80 per cent of the site is planned to be reused or repurposed in the legacy phase.

"We are building a city in Dubai South that is here to stay and will bolster the many other plans for growth that our leaders have for the country," Marjan Faraidooni, senior vice president of legacy development and impact at Expo 2020 Dubai, wrote in The National in July .

Siemens has already announced that it would be setting up its global logistics base on the Expo site from 2021, while she added that other companies are actively considering following in its tracks.

A conference and exhibition centre will be a key building in the Expo master plan, and will become a major event venue to be operated by Dubai World Trade Centre.

A model of Dubai South, which includes the site for the Expo 2020. Pawan Singh / The National

The Expo project has given a boost to the area around the site developments being ramped up in Dubai South.

Off-plan sales in the first seven months of the year in Dubai South increased 285 per cent, compared with the whole of last year, property analysts Reidin said in a report.

Once the site is fully developed, it is expected to be home to about 1 million residents and 500,000 jobs.

It's not just on the ground that the Expo effect will be felt, as Uber has signed an agreement with the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority to test flying cars at Expo 2020.

During his visit to the site in December 2018, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid called for youth to be at the heart of the Expo.

"The event is one of the largest global gatherings that bring together the world’s greatest minds to discuss how we can shape the future,' he said. "The youth should play a key part in this mega event and get opportunities to observe, learn and contribute creative ideas so that they can develop innovative solutions for creating a better future for our region and the world."

The public has been enthusiatic about the Expo. In a March 2019 survery, Dubai residents are confident Expo 2020 will deliver a positive impact on the economy, society and culture .

The inspiration behind the logo came from a ring found at a 4,000-year-old archaeological site in the desert in the Al Marmum area of Dubai.

The winning design was revealed by Sheikh Mohammed last year and was displayed on the Burj Khalifa.

The Expo 2020 logo, he said, “represents our message to the world that our civilisation has deep roots. We were and will always be a pot that gathers civilisations and a centre for innovation”.

Jonathan Gornall tells a wonderful story here  on how the discovery of the ring can be attributed to Sheikh Mohammed himself.

presentation on expo 2020

  • Written by Eric Baldwin
  • Published on September 28, 2018

For the Dubai 2020 Expo , the United Arab Emirates and Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai , selected the theme Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. Organized around ideas of Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity, the next world Expo will be the first to be held in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia region. Organised every five years, the world expo lasts six months and is created as a global destination for millions of people to share ideas, showcase innovation, encourage collaboration and celebrate human ingenuity.

presentation on expo 2020

The main site of Dubai Expo 2020 will be a 438-hectare area (1083 acres) located between Dubai and Abu Dhabi cities, near Dubai emirate's western border with Abu Dhabi emirate. The master plan, designed by the American firm HOK , is organized around a central plaza, entitled Al Wasl (meaning "the connection"), enclosed by three large pavilions which will be built by Al-Futtaim Carillion, each one dedicated to a sub-theme. The Dubai Metro Route 2020 will take 46,000 passengers per hour to and from the Expo site in under 16 minutes from Dubai Marina.

Discover ArchDaily's updated list of pavilions and architecture for the Dubai 2020 Expo:

UAE Pavilion by Santiago Calatrava

presentation on expo 2020

Calatrava’s design is meant to evoke the wings of a falcon in flight, linking itself to the country’s history of falconry to emphasize the country’s present day goals of global connectedness. The design proposes a 15,000 square meter pavilion with exhibition areas, an auditorium, food and beverage outlets, and VIP lounges. The UAE Pavilion covers four floors, including a 1,717-square-meter top story hospitality lounge. A 588-square-metre mezzanine will house support functions, with the remaining two floors containing 12,000 square meters will of exhibition space showcasing displays that respond to the Expo theme of “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.”

Luxembourg Pavilion by Metaform and The Space Factory

presentation on expo 2020

The theme designated for the Luxembourg’s pavilion at Dubai EXPO2020 is “Opportunity”. It reflects the history of Luxembourg, its present and future. The proposed pavilion is like the country: small and ambitious, intriguing and reassuring, and above all generous and open. The formal proposition is inspired by a Mobius strip, where twisting and folding of a ribbon results in one single surface, with no beginning and no end, symbolizing an infinity, and in the particular context of ‘cradle to cradle’, the circular economy. The pavilion is modeled and organized around this principle, while partial optimization of the width of a ribbon creates a needed shade and protection.

Sustainability Pavilion by Grimshaw

presentation on expo 2020

The pavilion aims to illuminate the ingenuity and possibility of architecture as society looks to intelligent strategies for sustainable future living. The pavilion is one of three at the expo, presenting the opportunity to deliver an aspirational message about the natural world, ecology and technology to a global audience. Drawing inspiration from complex natural processes like photosynthesis, the dynamic form of the pavilion is in service to its function, capturing energy from sunlight and fresh water from humid air. Sited in a prominent location, the pavilion structure works in tandem with the considered landscape of demonstration gardens, winding pathways and shaded enclaves to create an aura of magic punctuated by the sights, smells and tactile opportunities of nature. The gardens surrounding the pavilion design are an integral part of the visitor experience, both experiential and functional, setting the stage for the exhibition contents within and creating gathering areas that will manage and distribute crowds while providing retail, food and beverage opportunities.

Austrian National Pavilion by Querkraft

presentation on expo 2020

The Austrian Pavilion will center on questions of how resources can be used more thoughtfully and respectfully in the future. The Austrian Pavilion is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. The exhibition area for the Austrian pavilion will be located between Switzerland and China in the Opportunity district: “unlocking the potential within individuals and communities to shape the future”. In a time where huge amounts of information create misleading answers for complex issues, the Austrian Pavilion will focus on a framework of innovations. A grid of truncated cones will unfolds to create patterns of light and shadow. The cone forms will be carefully engineered to invite the visitor to rest and contemplate the surrounding exhibition.

USA Pavilion by Fentress Architects

presentation on expo 2020

While no renderings or visuals have been provided yet, Fentress Architects will design the United States of America’s pavilion at World Expo 2020 in Dubai. The winning design is based on the theme “What Moves You,” and will emphasize, “the power and diversity of culture, technological innovation in mobility, and commercial opportunity throughout the United States,” according to a statement from Pavilion USA 2020. Fentress’s design will play into the “dynamism of American culture,” and national values of “ingenuity, progress, and innovation.”

Mobility Pavilion by Foster + Partners

presentation on expo 2020

Foster + Partners won a competition to design the Mobility Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai . Under the Expo’s 2020 theme of Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, the teams were selected from 13 invited practices to design three themed pavilions within the Expo's HOK-designed masterplan: Opportunity, Mobility, and Sustainability. As Foster + Partners has said, "Dubai is emerging as a global hub for the design and construction industry, exemplified by the varied scope and breadth of our projects in the region. We have been heavily involved in a number of projects over the past two decades, from the Index Tower that opened in 2011, to presently working on the Dubai Design District Creative Community and Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) and the new Mobility Pavilion for the Expo 2020."

United Kingdom Pavilion by Es Devlin

presentation on expo 2020

Award-winning artist and designer Es Devlin OBE is set to design the UK Pavilion for Expo 2020 in Dubai. The scheme, titled “Poem Pavilion” will highlight “leading British expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Space,” and will be produced in collaboration with global brand agency Avantgarde. The Poem Pavilion will feature an illuminated “Message to Space,” with each of the Expo’s projected 25 million visitors invited to contribute. The idea draws directly on one of Stephen Hawking’s final projects, ‘Breakthrough Message’, a global competition that Hawking and his colleagues conceived in 2015 inviting people worldwide to consider what message we would communicate to express ourselves as a planet, should we one day encounter other advanced civilizations in Space. As Devlin asks, "What if the UK Pavilion at Expo 2020 becomes a place where visitors from all over the world take part in a collective global project that showcases British expertise in A.I. technologies and poetry while transcending national identities?"

Spain Pavilion by Selgascano + FRPO

presentation on expo 2020

Architecture firms Selgascano and FRPO have been selected as finalists to design Spain's National Pavilion for EXPO 2020 in Dubai. The winning proposal includes an inflatable canopy of nine yellow ETFE cylinders set within a steel framework. Reinterpreting the Spanish plaza, the design creates a new take on the public square. The pavilion was made to be ultralight as a more sustainable structure that could be easily removed and transported. Formed as a 'breathing pavilion', the design allows two inflatables to move up and down to respond to views, light and breeze.

New Zealand Pavilion by Jasmax

presentation on expo 2020

New Zealand’s theme for Expo 2020 is ‘Care for People and Place’. The theme is based on an indigenous Māori idea called kaitiakitanga. The concept relates to the deep connection between humans and the natural world, our responsibility to care for the environment and look after it for future generations. New Zealand’s Pavilion for Expo 2020 is designed by Jasmax . The pavilion will have an exhibition space highlighting New Zealand innovations, a restaurant serving premium New Zealand food and beverage and a curated store featuring the country’s top design objects. The pavilion was inspired by waka taonga, receptacles made by Māori to safeguard important items. Waka taonga were gifted to create partnerships, strengthen relationships and maintain traditions through the generations. The pavilion uses this concept to bring people together, reflecting the theme of Expo 2020 ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.

Dubai: On the edge of the Empty Quarter, hidden and forgotten for thousands of years, lie the remains of an ancient trading post – a city that traded with the ancient kingdoms of Egypt, Mesopotamia and India, with foundries producing exquisitely designed ornaments and weaponry. A thriving oasis in desert. A meeting place of cultures and ideas.

The archaeological discoveries at the 3,000-year-old Iron Age settlement of Saruq al Hadid - on the outskirts of Dubai - are rewriting the history of the Emirates – and the region. But its secrets would have remained just that for years, if not centuries, had it not been for an improbable stroke of luck.

Something unsual in the sands

In 2002, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was flying over an area of the desert approximately 80km south of Dubai when he saw something unusual. Sand dunes stretched as far as the eye could see – except for one small area. In the sea of yellow were dunes covered with what looked like small black stones. A team of archaeologists from the Dubai Municipality was ordered to investigate.

“When I came here it was a big mystery,” said Dr Mansour Boraik, Chief Archaeologist at the Architectural Heritage and Antiquities Department (AHAD), Dubai Municipality, describing his first visit. “You are in front of a big site, a huge site, and I said ‘Oh my God.’ It was a big challenge for us.”

The stones turned out to be slag from copper and iron smelting. As teams of archaeologists went to work, it soon became apparent that the site had flourished during the Iron Age, around 1,000 BCE. What is now a desert was once a rich, thriving oasis city.

New documentary

The story of the discovery of this ancient site and its importance for understanding the deep and rich history of the Emirates is the subject of a documentary ‘Saruq al Hadid: Dubai’s Iron Age’, which premiered at Expo 2020 Dubai on Sunday. A collaboration between Expo 2020 Dubai, Image Nation and Atlantic Productions, it will be available to watch on Expo 2020’s Youtube channel, Expo TV and Virtual Expo, from Monday onwards.

“For Sheikh Mohammed to be flying over the desert in his helicopter and to see strange things in the sand, for those little scars in the landscape to become something that we understand, and then to go below and understand what was there – it’s incredible,” said Anthony Geffen, CEO and Creative Director Atlantic Productions. “History peels back to reveal things that we had no idea were there.”

The documentary’s director Lina Zilinskaite recalls being “intrigued” when she got a call from Atlantic Productions about a proposed documentary, because it seemed unimaginable that such a site could exist so close to Dubai.

“When we think about ancient great civilisations, our minds immediately go to Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece,” Zilinskaite says. “What I found incredibly rewarding working on this project was showing that the ancient world was much richer and much more diverse than people think and that there were other cultural centres, other major civilisations at the time that were hubs of cultural activity, of trade and of exchange.”

The ring behind the logo

More than 23,000 artifacts have been excavated at the Suruq Al Hadid site. Exquisitely carved daggers, copper and bronze axe heads, arrowheads, models of snakes, ceramics and ornate jewellery reveal the story of a highly advanced civilisation that traded extensively with the region.

But one object would tell an even more important story. During excavations conducted in 2008 and 2009 by the Dubai Desert Survey, archaeologists discovered a solid gold ring that had been cast in beeswax. Instead of being worn on a finger, the ‘ring’ was linked with others to form a necklace.

“From all the thousands of items found at the site, the artefact that resonated with Sheikh Mohammed was not a mighty sword or a giant piece of earthenware, but a tiny gold ring,” said Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director-General of Expo 2020 Dubai.

That ring became the basis for Expo 2020 Dubai’s now-familiar logo which was unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed at a ceremony in 2016, where it was projected in gold light on to the Burj Khalifa.

“When we were searching for a logo for Expo, coming across the ring was like a gift from history and a gift from our nation,” said Dr Hayat Shamsudddin, Senior Vice President, Arts & Culture, Expo 2020 Dubai. “The ring is very much a symbol of representing the past, linking it with the present and taking us to the future. On its own the ring is breathtaking, but when you put many, many pieces together, it’s something even more beautiful.”

Shrouded in mystery

While there is no doubt Saruq Al Hadid was one of the most important trading hubs in the region, much about the people who lived there, their religion and culture remains a mystery. “I would say only two per cent has been excavated,” said AHAD archaeologist Mahra Al Mansoori. “Saruq al Hadid is a very big area and we are working square by square. We still have not found the houses of the people who lived there. It will probably take 20 years to answer all our questions about what is there.”

The site’s location, far from sources of timber needed to create charcoal for its kilns and the seaports it relied on for trade, has also puzzled archaeologists. Sculptures showing camels carrying saddles, pots and people dating from the first millennium BCE provide at least part of the answer by confirming the animal was domesticated during the Iron Age and used to transport goods across the vast deserts and along the Silk Roads linking Saruq Al Hadid to distance markets in Asia and the Middle East.

Another clue to the origins of Saruq Al Hadid are hundreds of models of snakes forged in copper and bronze found at the site. “All the models were made to look like they were moving on the ground,” said Dr Boraik. “The models of the snakes give us an idea that Saruq Al Hadid was a very important religious place where they were doing some ceremonies and worshipping the snake.” Importantly, carvings of snakes found as far east as Wadi Saham in the Hajar mountains of Fujairah, provide the earliest evidence of cultural unity in the Emirates going back 3,000 yeaPara

Parallels with modern-day Dubai

“If we compare … the vast trade of the people of Saruq Al Hadid in ancient times and compare it with today, Dubai now is one of the main cities of trade – it’s exactly the same,” said Dr Boraik. “It’s very nice to connect between the ancient and the modern history of Dubai.”

For Dr Hayat, Saruq Al Hadid’s role in opening the region to the wider world shows that the Emirates has always been a meeting point for civilisations – and that has important lessons for creating a better future for all.

“What we can learn from Saruq Al Hadid is that really the best way to move forward in preserving our planet and helping us have a better future for us, [and] for our generations to come, is to collaborate. One person may be able to do quite a bit, but many people and many nations coming together can really find solutions. When we come together, we can make for a better world and we really, really need that.”
