First, the University of Maryland supplemental essays are very short. On average, supplemental essays range in word count from 150-300 words. The University of Maryland supplemental essays are described as short answer questions, and rightly so. The maximum length is 650 characters, which amounts to anywhere from 92 to 163 words, depending on your word length. And, avoid cliches that are overused, such as “I would travel to another time period.” You can generally avoid falling into the trap of cliches if you’re specific and answer in a heartfelt, honest manner.

In the second of your University of Maryland supplemental essays, UMD is looking for evidence of your curious mindset. Feel free to interpret the word “research” broadly. While actual scientific research is valid to highlight, it’s not the only avenue to choose. You could also talk about a topic you did a deep dive on the internet to learn more about. Again, be specific about why this fact interested you. 

Second, connect your interest back to a personal value or an academic subject you enjoy. For example, maybe you were fascinated to learn that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains enough trash to fill 500 Jumbo Jets. You’d want to then speak to why this was important to you and if learning it had any impact on your future thoughts or actions.

The third of your UMD supplemental essays is focused on your academic interests. The key to this prompt are the words, “In addition to my major.” This question is looking for insight into other fields of interest besides your stated major. The University of Maryland supplemental essays create space for you to highlight your various interests and demonstrate your intellectual curiosity.

To answer this question, consider other academic subjects that interest you. Note that you do not have to list a field, like mechanical engineering or business. Instead, you can provide specific topics that interest you. For example, maybe your academic interests include reading Shakespearean plays or learning Italian. Include a few sentences about why you are interested in this topic. Do you have fond memories of acting out Shakespearean plays in sophomore English? What did you enjoy about that day? What was exciting, inspiring, or special? Maybe the weather was so cool and crisp that you felt inspired to go for a run. Or perhaps, you found out a friend won an award, and it made you happy to see that person honored. 

If you can’t remember what you did last Thursday, then pick any recent day you do remember. The school does not actually care about Thursday in particular, but rather the way in which you reflect upon your life. Use sensory details and explain why your answer is meaningful to you. Remember, even the little things can give your University of Maryland supplemental essays extra flair.

Something you might not know about me is… .

For some students, the most challenging of the UMD College Park supplemental essays is this one because of its open-endedness. However, rather than stress about trying to guess what might impress University of Maryland admissions officers, simply be yourself. Indeed, there is no “right” answer to this question. But you should still take time to think of something about yourself that is actually meaningful to you. Maybe you love waking up early on Saturdays to have pancakes with your family because it reminds you of how much you are loved. Maybe you paint portraits of your favorite hip-hop artists because you admire their music so much. If you are a transfer student, your University of Maryland supplemental essays will include a college transfer essay. What constitutes a transfer student? A transfer student is:

• Any student that has at least 12 semester or 18 quarter hours after high school graduation AND
• Is applying for admission at a new college

How to Get Into the University of Maryland: Acceptance Rate & Strategies

Prior to the turn of the new millennium, the University of Maryland-College Park welcomed 75% of the applicant pool into the Terrapin family. In recent years, the University of Maryland acceptance rate has been as low as 41% and the number of applicants has more than doubled since the end of the Clinton Presidency. A generation ago, many Maryland freshmen possessed solid-but-unspectacular academic credentials; in 2023, first-year Terrapins sport a median SAT score of 1440 and an average weighted GPA of almost 4.4. Yes…it’s really THAT competitive. No wonder the UMD acceptance rate has been trending sharply downward.

Given this sharp rise in selectivity, the intent of this article is to give those considering applying to the University of Maryland an understanding of the following topics:

Let’s begin with an examination of the most recent admissions data.

University of Maryland Acceptance Rate 

There were 56,637 applications for admission into the Terrapin Class of 2026. Only 25,201 or 44% of that group were accepted to the College Park campus. Maryland does grant favor in the admissions process to in-state applicants but, unfortunately, they do not release the in-state versus out-of-state admission rates so we are unable to quantify that advantage.

University of Maryland Early Action Acceptance Rate

Based on the most recent data available, applying to the University of Maryland during the Early Action round is almost a requirement. The Class of 2025 saw 61% of EA applicants accepted and just 38% of Regular Decision applicants achieving the same positive result. A stunning 90%+ of the incoming class was accepted via Early Action. The overall acceptance rate for that cohort was 52%.

University of Maryland Admissions – SAT, GPA, and Class Rank

For Class of 2025 members, the mid-50% SAT range for enrolled freshmen was 1370-1510, the ACT range was 30-34. Moreover, 85% possessed a weighted GPA of 4.0 or greater. Among enrolled 2022-23 first-year students, an impressive 66% hailed from the top 10% of their high school class, while 90% earned a place in the top 25%.

Admissions Trends & Notes

• Firstly, 76% of current undergraduates are Maryland residents.
• Additionally, there are international students from 116 countries.
• The number of applicants rose from roughly 32,000 to over 56,000 over the fast few years.
• 14.% of freshmen entered with enough college credit to begin with sophomore standing.
• Lastly, UMD- College Park was test-optional for the fall 2023 admissions cycle and will be again for the 2024 and 2025 cycles as well.

How the University of Maryland Rates Applicants

University of Maryland considers only three factors as “very important” to the admissions process: rigor of high school course load, GPA, and standardized test scores. Items that are “important” as part of the admissions process are: class rank, first-generation status, essays, recommendations, talent/ability, first-generation status, and state residency. “Considered” factors are: geographical residence, extracurricular activities, character/personal qualities, alumni relation, racial/ethnic status, work experience, and volunteer work.

Diving a bit deeper, the university does list additional factors that are considered during their review process. Some of these are identical to those listed above, but many are different, shedding a bit of additional light on how holistic application reviews are conducted:

Straight from the UMD admissions office: “The undergraduate admissions process is rigorous and individualized. As the university must make fine distinctions among large numbers of highly qualified applicants, the ability to assess consistently all information presented in the application becomes increasingly important. Therefore, the university employs a holistic review process that engages the expertise of professional educators whose judgments—based upon consideration of each applicant’s credentials measured by all admissions criteria—build an entering class that will best complement the existing student body and meet the university’s mission objectives.”

It is also worth highlighting that recruited athletes enjoy a huge edge. This is because the University of Maryland takes great pride in its 19 NCAA Division I sports teams . Overall, more than 700 student-athletes are presently attending the university. University of Maryland Demographics

Let’s now take a look at the demographics of the University of Maryland undergraduate student body.

The states that send the highest number of students to UMD are:

The fewest students come from the following states:

• South Dakota

The greatest number of international students come from the following countries:

• South Korea

In terms of ethnic identity, the breakdown is as follows:

• Hispanic: 10%
• African American: 12%
• Two or More Races: 5%
• International: 3%

A look at the gender split reveals that university enrolls more men than women.

University of Maryland’s “Yield Rate”

University of Maryland’s yield rate is 23%. In other words, 23% of those accepted went on to enroll. This figure is significantly lower than other powerhouse state universities like the University of Florida, University of Michigan, and UVA.

Tips for Applying to the University of Maryland

If you plan on joining the 56,000+ University of Maryland hopefuls for the next admissions cycle, you should know the following:

• Firstly, APPLY EARLY by November 1! This one is in all caps in case you are skimming and missed our previous look at EA vs RD acceptance rates.
• The University of Maryland does not use interviews as part of its evaluation process.
• Additionally, the University of Maryland does not consider “ demonstrated interest ” so you will not be judged on whether or not you made a campus visit, contacted an admissions officer, etc.
• Prospective Terrapins can apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application.
• In short, the preferred major you list is not a factor in the general admissions process. However, applicants to majors that are “Limited Enrollment Programs” will face additional departmental scrutiny due to limited space. For a full list of LEPs, click here .
• Lastly, make sure to dedicate sufficient time and effort to the “Complete this Sentence” short responses required by the University of Maryland. In the 2021-22 cycle, they are as follows:

Umd acceptance rate – final thoughts .

In conclusion, those with SAT/ACT scores within the mid-50% mark for the University of Maryland who are also at the very top of their respective high school class are absolutely viable candidates to this excellent institution. As the school states, “Admitted freshman students have a strong A-/B+ or better average in their high school coursework and are enrolled in the most challenging courses available to them including honors, Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses.”

How My Admissions Journey Led Me to University of Maryland

As the son of a college admissions counselor, my application journey began long before I ever set foot in a high school. Since I was a young age, I have visited hundreds of colleges around the country, usually against my will. And while I admittedly skipped the wide majority of the campus tours to head toward the football stadiums, I will admit that being exposed to a wide variety of colleges I did not consider helped me decide which ones I should.

Even as I enjoyed my time rising through the ranks of K-12, I have always looked forward to college. It excites me as a time to become more independent and explore my interests as well as my disinterests. I was seeking large universities with a plethora of options for these exact reasons. Additionally, I wasn't (and am still not) sure what I wanted to study and major in, so it made sense to look at schools with a diverse set of academic disciplines. Finally, as a huge sports fan, it was important for me to attend a school with a lot of spirit and excitement surrounding athletics.

Once I had narrowed down my list of colleges, then began the actual applications. Luckily, platforms like the Common App or Coalition App make the personal information part relatively quick and easy to fill out, but the essays are a different story. There were a few essays that could be used for multiple schools, but each school requiring individual essays was a draining process. I even decided not to apply to one college because there were just too many supplemental essays. Fortunately, I was surrounded with a very helpful group of people that provided much needed help in navigating the confusing and tiring application process.

A lot of people who have gone through the college admissions process will tell you that the most stressful part of it all is the waiting. And there is a lot of it. For some schools I applied to, the period between finalizing the application and getting a response was almost five months! Despite this, the ups and downs of my senior year of high school were enough to distract me. In fact, there were some decisions that came out, and before I got an email from the admissions office, I had completely forgotten about them. But what helped the most was putting my all into my applications and working hard for four years of high school. I was confident in myself and knew that the outcome would not determine my self-worth or make me any less accomplished.

That is a trap that I feel many applicants fall into — thinking that getting into a more selective school makes you a more accomplished or better person. Academic accomplishment is important and for some people is everything, but I don't personally agree with the notion that not enjoying your high school years because of the prospect of getting into a selective school is validated by doing so. It's important to maintain a good balance between school and other activities, especially during the latter years of high school.

The coronavirus pandemic has upended almost every aspect of society that we took for granted before. Schools are closed, social events are cancelled, and there's nowhere to go and nothing to do. While this has absolutely negatively affected my senior year of high school, it has luckily not (so far) affected my college experience. I do, however, feel for the junior class of high school that will have things like standardized testing and summer activities jeopardized because of this outbreak.

After all the decisions came in, I was left with the task of actually deciding where to go to college. I had great options, and knew that no matter where I decided to go I would be happy and get a great education. However, after weighing the pros and cons of each school and talking to current students and alumni, I finally decided to attend the University of Maryland. UMD has everything that I wanted in a college at an in-state price, and it was too good to turn down. I can't wait for the next four years! Go Terps!

2023 Maryland Soybean Fungicide Efficacy Trials

JUSTIFICATION

Fungicides are becoming increasingly popular in full season soybean production. These trials provide data that soybean producers can benefit from, such as: fungicide efficacy for managing common fungal diseases of soybean, monitor fungicide resistant pest populations, and track the economic impact of foliar fungicide applications over multiple years and environments unique to Maryland.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

Evaluate the efficacy of select foliar fungicides on full season soybeans grown on two research farms in Maryland by measuring foliar disease incidence and severity.

Determine any greening or green stem effects of the fungicides.

Monitor fungicide active ingredient efficacy over time and identify any fungicide insensitive foliar fungal pathogens.

Determine the yield impact of foliar fungicides and their economic impact.

Plot Design Field trials were established at three University of Maryland Research farms: Western Maryland Research & Education Center in Keedysville, MD (WMREC), Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, MD (WYE), and Central Maryland Research & Education Center (CMREC). Plots were 11’x30’ arranged in a randomize complete block design with five replicates. Planting details are outlined in Table 1. Plots were planted behind soybeans in order to create conditions conducive for developing foliar diseases on soybean.

Fungicide Applications

Fungicides (Table 2) were applied at the R3 growth stage (August 9 at WMREC and CMREC and August 2 at WYE) using a CO2 powered backpack sprayer equipped with TeeJet 8003 nozzles calibrated to deliver 20 GPA at 35 psi to the center 80 inches of each plot. Some plots had two fungicide treatments, the first at R3 and the second 14 days later with (R3+14 days). These applications were made on August 16 at WYE and August 23 at WMREC and CMREC.

Disease Rating Foliar diseases were rated prior to fungicide application at R3 and approximately every two weeks following until approximately R6. Disease severity from frogeye leaf spot (FLS; Cercospora sojina ) was visually rated as the percent leaf area infected in the upper canopy from the center rows of each plot (four rows for 15-inch row spacing plots and two rows of the 30-inch row spacing plots). Frogeye leaf spot is typically the most prevalent foliar fungal disease in Maryland soybean production.

Harvest and Statistics Yield data were collected by harvesting the center 5 feet of each plot using an Almaco R1 research combine. All yields reported are adjusted to 13% moisture. Harvest dates are shown in Table 1. Statistics related to profitability and economics were calculated using the local cash market price for soybean of $13.05 per bush- el at the time of analysis. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and significant differences between treatments were separated using Fisher’s Least Significant Difference (LSD; α=0.10).

RESULTS & DISCUSSION

Disease Rating Growing conditions were generally not favorable for disease development and we did not observe any ratable fungal diseases at any of the three trial locations. This is likely due to the weather conditions around pod fill, as well as the resistance package in the soybean variety; Mid-Atlantic Seed ‘3220E3’ has a frogeye leafspot resistance rating of 6 on a 10-point scale (10 being the most resistant). This is now the third year in a row where no ratable foliar diseases were present in these plots.

Yield Yields (Figure 1 and Table 2) varied greatly between locations. Yield average at WMREC was 45.5, 61.2 at CMREC, and 74.7 bushels per acre at WYE. Yields at WMREC were suppressed due to the drought in western Maryland. Statistically, there were no significant differences between fungicide treatments and the non-treated control at any of the trial locations (P=0.4331 at WMREC, P=0.6580 at CMREC, and P=0.4056 at WYE). There were also no significant differences in grain moisture or test weight.

Since there was a significant difference in yield between locations (P<0.0001), relative yield was calculated and used to compare yields across locations. Relative yield was calculated by dividing the plot yield by the non-treated control plot yield and reported as a percentage. Values greater than 100 represent a yield greater than the control and values less than 100 represent a yield less than the control. When data were combined this way, no significant differences were observed between treatments (P=0.6901, Figure 2).

Green Stem It is common for fungicides to keep plants greener for longer, and we observed a significant difference in plant greenness prior to harvest in plots that received a fungicide application. Both the single application at R3 and the double application at R3 and R3+14 days significantly increased green stem compared to the non-treated control (p=0.0221).

CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND FUTURE WORK

In previous years of this study, foliar fungicide applications with the selected products tested provided some benefit related to improved seed quality and yield in situations where FLS disease pressure was present at measurable levels (2018-2019). Fungicides also significantly increased plant greenness and delayed senescence.

During the 2023 growing season, however, none of the treatments tested yielded significantly different than the non-treated control. This is likely due to the fact that no ratable foliar fungal diseases were present in the plots this year. Without the presence of a pathogen, fungicides have reduced odds of improving yields over non-treated plots.

Relative net profit was calculated by multiplying the bushel increase over the non-treated control by the cash market price for soybean at the time of analysis (13.05/bu for December 2023) and subtracting the cost of application. A flat rate of $26.00 per acre was used for 2023 data; for plot with two applications, $52.00 was used. This metric, net profit, was used to compare the economics of the fungicides while accounting for yield, market prices, and the cost of application. Figure 3 shows net profit for each treatment; there are no significant differences (P=0.6838).

When net profit was analyzed by treatment timing (R3, R3 + 14, and none) across all years (2021-2023), the single R3 application was provided a significantly greater profit margin ($29/acre) than two treatment program (-$26/acre) and the non-treated control (P=0.0231; Figure 4). These data indicate that a single fungicide application at R3 provides the greatest yield increase and profit margin compared to a two-pass program.
