A Master’s program can be followed by doctoral studies, which focus on an independently conducted research project (dissertation) and lead to the doctoral degree (PhD).

It is possible to write a PhD thesis in English. However, to pursue doctoral studies and participate in academic life, candidates must have sufficient knowledge of German.

Doctoral research projects may be accepted from candidates who have completed a Master’s degree in film studies with excellent results. The minimum admission requirement is a Master’s program consisting of 30 credits in film studies and an additional 30 credits for the Master’s thesis on a topic relevant to film studies. An equivalent degree in a closely related field with a liberal arts/cultural studies approach can also be accepted (in this case, the final thesis must also concern a topic relevant to film or media studies). In each case, the decision on admission lies with a professor of the Department of Film Studies.

Procedure : please contact the department office to make an appointment with the respective professor. The following documents are to be submitted prior to the meeting:

  • copy of Master’s diploma
  • letter of motivation
  • project outline (3–5 pages)

The general regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences apply. Applicants are not entitled to admission.

Dr XU Huatao  Building Generalizable Deep Learning Solutions for Mobile Sensing

This thesis signifies a significant leap in mobile sensing with deep learning. It introduces LIMU-BERT, a pioneering sensor foundation model adaptable to various applications, and integrates it into UniHAR, a universal learning framework that trains models across domains using physics-informed data augmentation. A notable innovation is 'Penetrative AI,' the first-ever application of Large Language Models (LLMs) like ChatGPT for processing IoT sensor signals. This breakthrough enables LLMs to interact with the physical world, laying the groundwork for generalizable IoT solutions. The thesis's excellence is recognized by the SenSys 2021 best paper runner-up award and the GetMobile 2022 research highlight. Its models have gained nationwide adoption in Eleme, China's second-largest food delivery service. It also has sparked widespread discussion on social media. Altogether, this work substantially enriches the mobile sensing field, expanding both the scope and effectiveness of AIoT systems in practical applications.

for contributions to advancing graph deep learning through innovative benchmarks, neural network architectures, and scalable frameworks

Photo of CCDS PhD student, Dr Dwivedi Vijay Prakash.

Dr DWIVEDI Vijay Prakash  Deep Learning for Graph Structured Data

This thesis marks a significant advancement in deep learning for graph-structured data which are ubiquitous in domains such as drug discovery, social networks, medicine and transportation. Addressing the inadequacies of traditional deep learning approaches for such data, the thesis introduces comprehensive benchmarks for assessing Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) across varied domains. A key contribution is the extension of Transformer networks, fundamental to ChatGPT, to graph domains, integrating graph-based inductive biases and positional encodings, thereby enhancing expressivity and generalization. His work also proposes novel techniques for learning distinct structural and positional representations in GNNs, boosting model capacities. Further, he develops scalable Graph Transformers that can adapt to massive graphs with billions of edge connections, employing efficient local and global graph representations and fast neighborhood sampling. Overall, this thesis paves the way for the application of GNNs in complex real-world relational data scenarios, significantly contributing to the field of graph representation learning.

for contributions to systems addressing efficiency and practicality issues of ML model tuning, training, scheduling, and deployment in large-scale clusters.

Photo of CCDS PhD student, Dr Hu Qinghao.

Dr HU Qinghao  Building Efficient and Practical Machine Learning Systems

Emerging ML technologies have empowered transformative applications, such as ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion. These breakthroughs heavily rely on advanced system support, encompassing training frameworks and cluster schedulers.  However, as ML workloads proliferate and billion-scale models surface, current systems fail to handle them efficiently. Qinghao’s thesis focuses on addressing efficiency and practicality issues with ML-tailored system designs. His research expands along two lines: (1) Efficiency. He pioneers system optimizations for both cluster and job levels. His ground-breaking work is the first to facilitate hyperparameter tuning for large models such as GPT-3. Through novel model scaling, fusion, and interleaving, he achieves two orders of magnitude acceleration. (2) Practicality. Most existing work targets excellent system performance while ignoring its complexity and usability. Qinghao first attains the state-of-the-art performance under the non-intrusive design principle in cluster scheduling systems. Besides, he crafts a unified framework to achieve transparent, performant and lightweight systems.

‘Weiss & Morales’: European Co-Production is ‘Medicine in the Crisis’ for an Industry in Recovery

By Jamie Lang

  • ‘Babylon Berlin’ Gets Green Light for Fifth and Final Season 4 days ago
  • Conecta Fiction: More Co-Production, Cost Contention and the ‘Severely Overstated’ Death of Peak TV 4 days ago

'Weiss & Morales'

“Weiss & Morales” is a new light crime drama procedural co-produced between Spain and Germany. It has received considerable industry attention over the past several weeks as broadcasters ZDF and RTVE have increased their PR for the show, which could represent an evolution in how pan-European series are developed and produced at an affordable cost without sacrificing quality.

ZDF and RTVE co-produced the series alongside ZDF Studios and Nadcon in Germany and Portocabo in Spain. RTVE has exclusive rights to the series in Spain, while ZDF handles international sales outside Spanish-speaking territories.

Related Stories

Below, we examine several factors that led to this nontraditional co-production and whether it could be repeated in the future under different circumstances or if its existence is simply a case of right time, right place, right incentives and right partners.

The Right Time

Global streaming platforms are cutting back and scaling down their commissions in many territories. To pick up that slack, European producers are turning to their local broadcasters for help with financing and distribution.

“I’m a great fan of linear television,” said Nadermann (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” “The Bridge, “”) during the “Weiss & Morales” Conecta Fiction panel. He says that while streaming has certainly disrupted the TV ecosystem, linear TV still plays an important role for many. “People get home after a long day, and they want to turn on the TV and be surprised and see something new.”

The Right Place

Spain’s Canary Islands have become a production hotbed thanks to their incredible aesthetic diversity, agreeable climate and some of the most competitive fiscal incentives in Europe.

While those factors certainly contributed to the development and production of “Weiss & Morales,” the Islands being one of the most popular tourist destinations for Germans was vital when ironing out the show’s narrative.

“For a project like ‘Weiss & Morales,’ the Canary Islands offer great advantages,” argues Portocabo’s Alfonso “Fosco” Blanco, executive producer of the show. “One of them is that it’s an organic co-production with Germany, given that there is a huge community of Germans settled on these Spanish islands. In addition to this, the Canary Islands offer a diversity of landscapes that is very valuable for Portocabo’s style, where the locations become an additional protagonist in the story.”

The Right Incentives

Capped at 50% of a total production investment or spend and €18 million ($19.3 million) per TV episode, the Canary Islands’ shoot incentives now rate among the biggest in Europe, comparing favorably to France’s, levied at 30% with a €30 million ($32.4 million) cap, and the U.K’s, offered at 25% of eligible spend though with no ceiling on relief save that it cannot exceed 80% of a production budget.

“These days, it’s nearly impossible to finance an international high-end series without any advantages of the shooting location,” Nadermann told Variety after the Conecta Fiction panel. “We have obviously chosen the Canary Islands because we wanted to tell our stories for content reasons exactly there, but the advantages of the Canary Islands were, of course, important for the financing.”

The Right Partners

Germany’s ZDF and Spain’s RTVE are European public broadcasting powerhouses and boast some of the biggest audiences on the continent. According to Ampere Analysis, Germany is the second-largest TV market in Europe, while Spain is fourth. So, the two companies teaming up on a show that will feel both exotic and recognizable in equal parts in each market feels like a perfect fit.

“I think it’s important for the public broadcasters to work together,” RTVE Head of Cinema and Fiction José Pastor said at Conecta Fiction. “In this business, the most important thing is to build relationships. ZDF are strong partners, and at the same time, Portocabo is a reliable company.”

The spirit of collaboration extended to the artists working on the shows as well, added Nadermann, “All of the people working on the German side of this show love working with the Spanish talent, and vice versa.”

Is This Model Repeatable?

“Because of our long experience and great successes with our co-productions, Germany, and especially ZDF, may be more open to co-produce than other countries, but I hope this will change,” he added.

According to Blanco, Spanish companies can similarly look abroad to shoot future co-productions. “It is possible [to repeat this kind of production] both in Spain and in other territories, but the key is to be born from a reality of the environment that organically offers a realistic narrative,” he argued.

He pointed to past Iberian co-productions as evidence, explaining, “In our case, with Portugal and Galicia, everything stems from a historical cultural and territorial connection. We have produced successful series such as ‘Vidago Palace’ or two seasons of ‘Dry Water’ for networks such as RTP and TVG, accompanied by Portuguese production companies such as SPi and Hop.”

Nadermann agrees regarding the narrative values of working with international partners. “Co-productions can open so many interesting new possibilities for modern storytelling, and on the financial side, we are the medicine in the crisis.”

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix ‘s urban fantasy drama The Grimm Reality will not see the light of day. We’ve learned that the series from Dark producer Wiedemann & Berg and The Gryphon co-producer Dog Haus Films has been quietly shelved.

The Grimm Reality first went into development at Netflix’s German base and then into production in late 2022. We understand filming had completed, but it will not move further forwards at Netflix.

Show creators were Till Kleinert ( Der Samurai ) and Dog Haus’ Erol Yesilkaya, who is a producer and scriptwriter. Actors including Hyuan Wanner, Patrick Isermeyer, Eidin Jalali and Dennis Schuermann were cast.

The fate of the show has been a topic of discussion among German producers in recent months, with one source saying it appeared to have “ended up in a dark cellar.” Netflix declined to comment, but the streamer has ditched the project. Content at Netflix’s DACH ( Germany , Austria and Switzerland) region is led by VP of Content Katja Hofem. Neither Wiedemann & Berg or Dog Haus had not responded to requests for comment at press time.

However, Netflix confirmed over the weekend German gangster series Crooks will get a second season following the success of the first, which landed near the top of the streamer’s non-English TV charts in several countries and briefly charted stateside.

The Wiedemann & Berg show is among several the indie has with Netflix this year. Others include the recently launched Sixty Minutes , in which a mixed martial arts fighter races across Berlin to attend his daughter’s birthday party or risk losing custody. Further down the line is Brick , a film that follows a couple whose apartment building is suddenly surrounded by a mysterious brick wall, and Blame the Game , about a games night that goes becomes complicated. Both were unveiled at a Next on Netflix event in Berlin earlier this year.
