Often we become angry when a current event triggers an old unresolved issue from our past or when we see a trait in others we cannot stand in ourselves e.g seeing stinginess in someone when you are the stingy one, or when a need is not being met just to mention a few.

Jennifer Gehrisch

Anger is a common and natural emotion; it is the strong feeling of unhappiness and irritation. Study focused on all the reason which makes the person angry and the management of the anger. The locale of the study was Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, while the data was collected with the sample size of 40, by using convenience sampling. The conclusion of the study is that anger is the natural phenomenon its create sometime many physical and psychological tensions and sometime due to anger one can unintentionally do things that he/she don’t want to do.

Anger as an emotional reaction involves both physical and psychological changes in our health. Despite of common emotional reactions, it can create many physical and psychological disturbances and diseases as well. So, information regarding its management is helpful to learn some of the simple skills to control it. There cannot be a single cause of the anger. Heredity factors, home environment, social learning and cultural factors are important factors for its emergence. Behavioral techniques and cognitive restructuring techniques are found to be effective methods in controlling anger reaction if practiced properly and systematically. They are effective only if practicing therapist or psychologist is equipped with these skills. It cannot be done jus reading an article in the books.

Anger is a subject which is seldom discussed independently of other topics. Because of this there appears to exist no work which would enable helping professionals to understand and deal specifically with anger related problems. The purpose of this study is to define the basic dynamics of anger and to suggest a method by which educationally oriented helping professionals may deal with the emotion. Anger is defined as experiential emotional state which is characterized by a physiological arousal state. The arousal state is accompanied by cognitive desires to inflict harm (verbal or physical) on another person or object. Anger is seen as having six different causes which, the author defines as six different types of anger. The types of anger are: (1) Instinctive anger: A biological adaptive anger which stems from a well defined threat to one's property, life, or family; (2) Frustration anger: Anger which is the result of the frustration of an organism's goal oriented response;...

The present review summarizes the current research on anger coping and experiencing. We proceeded step by step, starting from the structure of anger coping, covering the influence of anger coping on somatic health, the influence of anger coping on psychic health, and finally we discussed the interpersonal domain of anger coping, including dyadic interactions. The main emphasis was given on the shift in the conceptualization of anger coping from the simple descriptions of coping mechanisms towards the dynamic explanations within the interpersonal context. We discussed contextual factors, such as situational specificity, relative status of the individual within the social group, interpersonal targeting of anger expression, perceived level of injustice in anger elicitors, etc. Further, we also focused on the domain of the nonverbal expression of anger. Since nonverbal expression constitutes the essential part of emotional coping, we surveyed some aspects of this subfield, such as facial expression of anger, energetical costs of nonverbal expression of anger, intrapersonal emotional transfer, and emotional transfer of anger between individuals.

ANGER MANAGEMENT ~ STATISTICS ~ 5.5% of the Nation’s Elementary Teachers were attacked by students! (U.S. Dept of Education 1999-2000 school year) 10% of the Nation’s Elementary Expulsions were for bringing firearms to school (U.S. Dept of Education 1998-1999 School Year) Source: http://www.nccev.org/violence/statistics/statistics-schools.html

ANGER MANAGEMENT Anger management does not involve getting rid of all anger, but using anger to enhance your life. We can look at the purposes of anger in both a positive and negative light. http://www.anger-management.net/question_show.cfm?selected=85

ANGER MANAGEMENT The positive aspects of anger are that you have increased energy, are able to communicate your feelings, able to problem solve and can take charge of the situation. http://www.anger-management.net/question_show.cfm?selected=85

ANGER MANAGEMENT The negative aspects of anger are that you can have disruption of your thinking, unnecessarily defend yourself, become aggressive and become known as an angry person. http://www.anger-management.net/question_show.cfm?selected=85

ANGER MANAGEMENT Anger management would be seen then as increasing the positive aspects or functions of anger and decreasing the negative functions of anger. http://www.anger-management.net/question_show.cfm?selected=85

ANGER MANAGEMENT So now,,, you have a student that is displaying a lot of ANGER! Now What do you do?

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Skills needed in dealing with your anger: • Identify a range of feelings including anger • Identify aggressive acts by self and others • Identify the potential consequences to self and others from these aggressive acts • Identify self-destructive behavior • Identify thoughts prior to aggressive acts • Identify internal cues to feelings of anger • Develop coping mechanisms for dealing with anger • Express anger without loss of control

Identify a range of feelings including anger: Embarrassment Excitement Disappointment Jealousy Fear Helpless Sadness Left-out ANGER MANAGEMENT

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I am in charge of my own feelings: I own my feelings. It is okay to feel angry. Anger is part of being human. I learn how to express my anger in helpful ways.

Identify aggressive acts shown by self and others: Throw something Kick someone or something Get in someone’s face Shoving, grabbing, hitting Break something Call someone names Give someone a dirty look Silent treatment Get others to “gang up” Spread rumors ANGER MANAGEMENT

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I choose to feel good about myself through expressing my feelings. • I express angry feelings in ways that are fair to others and me. • I use fair words…e.g. “I feel when you”

ANGER MANAGEMENT • The more I learn to take care of my anger the more powerful I become. I need to control what I do with my anger. I control how I let my anger out. I practice cooling off. I watch my thoughts.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Know the difference between ANGER and AGGRESSION. • Anger is an emotion. It is ok to be angry. • Aggression is acting out inappropriately and is not ok. Learn to check your aggression and express your anger appropriately.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Ways to Keep Cool: • Get exercise every day. • Eat right. • Get enough sleep. • Learn to relax. • Know your feelings. • Write about those feelings.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Ways to Keep Cool: • Find a quiet place. • Take a time out. • Find fun distractions. • Make good decisions about what you see and hear. • Choose friends who make you feel good. • Learn to forgive and forget.

Identify potential consequences of your anger to others and yourself…what can that mean for you? Physical harm to someone or self Destruction of property Loss of family/friends Loss of job Loss of social privileges Going to jail Getting a bad reputation ANGER MANAGEMENT

Identify self-destructive behavior…How does that help or hurt you? Negative self-talk Blaming everyone else Taking everything personally Assuming Overeating, drinking Driving recklessly Taking drugs Looking for fights Feeling outraged ANGER MANAGEMENT

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I stop blaming others and myself. • Blaming only keeps people upset. • Blaming is a way of not respecting people. • I express my feelings and then try to work things out.

Identify thoughts prior to aggressive acts: You did that on purpose… You wanted to hurt me… You deserve this… You never even asked me… You’re being unreasonable… You think you’re so good… I’ll show you… You started it… There’s no justice… ANGER MANAGEMENT

Identify internal cues to feelings of anger: Stomach gets tight/upset Heart is beating faster Clenching fists Feel myself getting flushed Pressure on my temples Sweaty palms Clenched jaw ANGER MANAGEMENT

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I don’t have to hold on to my anger. • I find ways to let it go • I talk about hurt and angry feelings. • I look for someone to discuss my anger. • I discuss my words and actions that hurt others.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Steps to taming anger • Know what pushes your buttons. • Know your body’s anger signs. • Stop and think! • Cage your rage…it’s your choice. • Decide what to do.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I take power. • I stand up for myself and others being hurt. • I learn to defeat negative self-talk. • I feel good about learning about myself. • I am strong when I use fair and firm words instead of fists.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • I remember that people are precious. • I watch my thoughts, words, and actions. • I stop hurting people with my words and actions. • I take ownership of the hurtful things I do and say. • “Bullying” hurts everyone.

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Calm down • Name the problem • Find solutions • Pick the best solution • Congratulate yourself • Evaluate the solution • Make changes if necessary

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Can you identify any of the steps in resolving conflict, controlling your anger and avoiding aggressive behavior? • Well…(then click)

ANGER MANAGEMENT • Calm down • Show mutual respect • Name the problem • Find solutions • Choose the best solution • Congratulate yourself • Review the solution that was picked

ANGER MANAGEMENT Now that YOU understand the mechanics of Anger Management,,, How Does this relate to YOUR Students in Elementary School?
