It was a cloudy day when I took my first step into the compound of my school. I was carrying a new backpack that was filled with notebooks. Though the backpack was a bit heavy, instead of focusing on the weight, I was excited about the beginning of my journey on my first day in school.

My classroom was at the end of the corridor. As I entered my classroom, my class teacher introduced me to the class and made me feel welcome. Activities like reading, solving problems in groups, and sharing our lunch boxes slowly and steadily transformed the new student with a sense of belonging.

The whole day progressed with mixed excitement as well as emotions. As the bell rang, declaring the end of the school day, the school felt like a world of possibilities where the journey was more than textbooks.

It was a sunny day and the sun was shining brightly. With my new and attractive backpack, I was moving through the school gate. It was my first day in school and I was filled with nervousness and excitement. From the tower of the building to the playground everything was bigger than life. The corridor was filled with the echo of students. As I entered the classroom, wearing a mix of curiosity and excitement, my classmates and class teacher welcomed me with a warm smile. My first day in school started by stepping onto the school bus with a bag full of books and a heart full of curiosity. It was like I was starting a new chapter in my life. After travelling a long way back, I stepped at the gate of my school. The school gate welcomed me with open arms and greeted me with a sense of excitement as well as nervousness.

As I entered the classroom, I found many new faces. Arranging my stuff on the seat, I sat next to an unknown, who later on turned into the best friend of my life. I entered my class with a welcoming smile, and later on, I turned everything in with ease. During our lunchtime, the cafeteria was filled with the energy of students. 

At first, I hesitated to interact with the children, but later on, I was a part of a group that invited me to join the table. At lunchtime, I made many new friends and was no longer a stranger. After having delicious food and chit-chatting with friends, we get back to our respective classrooms. Different subjects such as mathematics, science, and English never left the same impact as they did on the first day of school. 

The teacher taught the lessons so interestingly that we learned the chapter with a mix of laughter and learning. At the end of the day, we all went straight to the playground and enjoyed the swings. Moreover, in the playground, I also met many faces who were new to the school and had their first day in school, like me.

While returning home, I realised that my first day was not just about learning new subjects; it was about making new friends, sailing into new vibrant classrooms, and settling myself as a new student. The morning, which was full of uncertainty at the end of the day, came to an end with exciting adventures and endless possibilities. A New Experience

My first day at school was a completely new experience for me. It is because the atmosphere completely changes for any child. You always stay in the comfort and safety of your own home.

However, your first day at school opens door to unknown experiences and opportunities. Much like any other child, I was also scared on my first day. I remember clearly not letting go of my mother’s hand, hesitant to go in the classroom.

On my first day, I got up excited and put on my uniform for the first time. The feeling it gave me was so memorable, I can never forget it. As it was my first day, both my parents went to drop me off.

I remember seeing the classroom full of little children. Some crying while the others playing with others. I looked at my mother and gave her the look that I didn’t want them to leave. They had to go so I kept crying but eventually, my teacher consoled me.

Once I settled in the class, I talked with the other kids and started playing with them. The colourful walls of the classroom fascinated me a lot. We got many toys to play with so it all the other kids also got distracted and stopped crying.

My Sister My Saviour

My advantage was that my sister was also studying in the same school. She is 3 years older than me so she was my senior. During recess, I was starting to miss my parents so I got teary-eyed.

But, then my sister came to meet me and I feel she was no less than a saviour for me that day. She took permission from the teacher to take me out and I went with her to the playground.

We were swinging throughout recess. All my worries went away because I had a known face with me. After eating and swinging together, the bell rang to mark the end of the recess . So, she dropped me back to my class.

Before leaving, she gave me a kiss and patted my head. It was enough for me to go through the rest of the day without crying. Thus, it made me feel extremely blessed that I had my sister there for me.

My first day at school is a very happy memory and I will always love to revisit it. It was a different experience altogether. From the comfort zone of my home, I was suddenly put into a completely new atmosphere – My Preschool. It looked so crowded and noisy. I still remember, on my first day, I was crying and so the memories of the morning are very blurry.

My parents comforted me and gave me my favourite chocolate ice-cream. I entered the classroom, and it immediately cheered my mood up. The classroom was very colourful, filled with small benches and a lot of toys and swings.

The teacher came after a few minutes. She was very friendly. After an hour, we all grouped together, and played several fun games and did many activities together. It was a very amazing day.

I still remember my first day at preschool. I was very excited and nervous. Being a 5-year-old kid, it had been so hard for me to leave my home and settle in a completely new place for almost an entire day, but I was a tough kid. I was also very excited to wear my uniform. I reminded Mummy to iron my uniform many times until I checked myself and was sure of it.

My Day At School

When I entered the school with my parents on my first day, I was surprised with the fact that there were so many children of my age, some were happy and laughing, running on the ground. While a few were very scared and crying, their parents and teachers were trying to calm them down.

I was having mixed feelings, but once I entered class, I was elated with joy. The classroom was coincidently painted with my favourite colour—Sky Blue.

In my first lesson, I was taught the alphabet. But since I already knew them, the teacher called me out to recite it in front of the class. I nervously went ahead and did it. Everyone clapped for me. It was a very nice moment and made my first day of the school an unforgettable memory for me.

My first day at school was an unforgettable memory for me and gave me a gift I cherish to this date. It was a cozy and comfortable evening in April when I was informed with the news that I have been admitted to Mount Libra Zee School.

I didn’t know how to react. I have seen my sister going to school daily, sometimes she was happy about it, but sometimes she was very reluctant to go and made silly excuses to avoid school. My parents had also brought a very cute school uniform. I liked it and was excited to wear it. But I still had no idea about how the first day of school was going to be.

How My First Day At School Started

The next morning, I dressed up very early in excitement. I ate my breakfast and Mummy packed a small tiffin box for me. At 8 o'clock, I went to the school in my father’s red car.

When I Reached My School

The school building was huge. It was painted with cartoons. I got happy when I saw my favourite cartoon characters, Tom & Jerry painted on the walls too. My father left me at the school gate to a peon after instructing him about my class. The peon picked me up very gently and started walking through the endless corridors. I could see the huge playground in the middle of the school building. It had all kinds of swings in it. For a moment, I wanted to run away to my favourite Merry-Go-Round, but I dropped that temptation and was dropped in front of my class by the peon.

My Classroom

The class had 15 chairs, all painted with cartoon characters. The wall had ABCs and numbers painted on it. It was a very cheerful and colourful environment. My eyes immediately glanced through the students already sitting there. They all were lost in their world. Some were sobering, while some were making drawings with crayons.

After a few minutes, our teacher came. She asked each of us our names and hobbies, and then she introduced herself to us. Then, she asked everyone to name the animals and birds painted on a picture board. We all begin singing the names. It was very fun. She was impressed with us and gave us candies at the end of the lesson.

After 2 hours, a bell rang for lunch. I took out my tiffin and started feasting on my sandwiches. A boy came to me, and said that sandwiches are his favourite. I knew his name by now, Ansh. I quickly offered him one and he was very happy. We soon became friends and chatted endlessly about Spider-Man, Iron Man and Tom and Jerry.

After learning that his favourite cartoon was also Tom and Jerry , I instantly knew I got my first school friend. 14 years forward, Ansh is still my best friend, and I am always thankful to him for making my first day at school a very fond memory.

In recess, I took my lunch. The class monitor joined me in my lunch. He was a nice fellow. He showed me to the school and took me to the playground. It was a big ground.

After recess, there were four more periods. I was feeling quite comfortable in the class. All the teachers were very nice and friendly. Their way of teaching was also very good and interesting.

At 1 O’clock the last bell went. I left the class and came back home. My mother was waiting at the door. She was worried about me. She felt relieved when she saw me happy. I told her everything that happened in the school. She was glad to hear the account of my first day in school.

The Principal serially called out the children and then signed their admission form. I was admitted to the first standard. My classroom was on the ground floor, When į entered the classroom, I saw 20 to 25 students present there. I also saw Sudha’s sister in the classroom. Sudha is my sister’s friend. She welcomed me. My class teacher asked me to take a seat in the first row. After two hours we had our recess. We all closed our schoolbags and came out.

My sister was waiting for me outside the classroom. Both of us finished our tiffins. After that, we played for some time and went back to our respective classrooms. Our class teacher told us about the rules and regulations that we need to follow in the school. Then she gave us the list of books, asked us to learn the tables. She also asked me to recite a poem. She congratulated me for reciting it correctly.

The school got over at 12.30 p.m. My sister came to pick me up. She carried me to the main gate where our mother was waiting for us. All three of us took a rickshaw and came back home. I feel very happy and pleased when I remember my first day of school.

Later after having some talks with my parents, he gave me a small packet of candies and asked me to distribute them among my classmates after school reopened next month.

In the next twenty days, the school reopened. As it was my very first day, I went crying to the school. I felt very bad leaving my parents. I entered the class and sat on the first bench. My class teacher entered the class. She seemed very kind. She treated me very well. In the beginning, I felt a bit nervous in the new atmosphere. Children looked at me surprisingly and smiled. Maybe because I was little fat and tall than them. That day I got my first lesson in English alphabets and Maths digits.

The bell for recess rang. Children rushed out of the classroom. Some of them gathered around me as if they were watching some strange creature. They started laughing at me and made fun of me. I felt very bad. However, a few children felt sad for the trouble caused to me by other children in the class. Some came forward to support me. This was something very new for me.

The final bell rangat two o’clock in the afternoon. All the children were overjoyed. Even I was happy that the first day got ended. I picked up my bag and water bottle and hurried back to my home.

A lot of the things I did just yesterday I will have difficulty in remembering but many years ago my first day in school, I remember in every detail. It was a Wednesday morning in March at Mount Abu. It was a cold morning and I was shivering because I did not want anything to spoil the new school uniform I was wearing.

The previous day my Mother, Father and I had visited the school to see my class and meet my class teacher and so I knew where I had to go and who would be my teacher.

That day my mother woke me up very early. I was just two and a half years old and I cried when I was awoken so early. That day she prepared my most favourite breakfast which I had happily. For my recess break too she prepared my favourite upma and packed it neatly into my new tiffin box and put it into my bag. My parents took me to my class where the teacher Mrs. Varghese stood with open arms to receive me. She was a very kind and gentle lady. I was the first student to reach her class. After speaking briefly to her my parents kissed me and assuring that they would return to pick me up, they went away.

My teacher showed me where to sit and made me comfortable. Just then a class mate of mine came, a girl by the name of Richa and she was crying loudly. Soon after her many came in with their parents and all were crying. I felt that there must be something that I am supposed to fear and so I too started crying. My teacher sang for us, played music for us, acted the clown for us but we just cried. In the end she started crying and then one by one we stopped crying. I went over to my teacher and told her not to cry. Then my teacher stopped crying and we did whatever she told us to do. We loved her because she was just like us.

After recess we went back to our classroom and my new friends and I managed to coax two boys to stop crying. In fact, soon we were laughing and playing together. Once in a while the teacher had to tell us to keep quiet as we were making too much noise.

Still some parents looked in anxiously through the windows.

Finally the bell rang for us to go home. Some of us relieved to be reunited with our parents. I too were very was glad to see my mother waiting for me at the school gate. I had made many friends. It had been a wonderful first day at school.

This is my third school. Yet, on the day I joined it, I was very nervous. We had shifted to Singapore recently and so I had to change to this school.

This school is very different from my previous one. It has a very grand and imposing building. There are big playgrounds on two sides and a beautiful garden in front. Soon I was one of them. What I considered their aloofness was just discipline. How could they talk in front of the teacher! Now, I love my school.

During the break, some boys gathered around me and asked me many questions. We talked for a while, then it was time for lessons again. Naveen, who sat beside me, very kindly shared his text books with me as my parents hadn’t bought my books, on the first day. During the last period we had a singing class. I joined in happily as I love music.

The boys rushed out when the bell rang at 1.00 p.m. and I ran out too, eager to reach home.

My partner began to share his lunch with me everyday. We became the best of friends and soon I fell in love with my school. However even today, when I think of my first day at school I remember the fear that I had and how my teacher and my friends helped me to overcome this feeling.

My memories of the first day at school haunt me till today. Never again have I experienced such a mixture of strange feelings. The anxiety of being in school along with the excitement of making new friends- all these made my first day at school most memorable and I long for the innocence and fun that was common among me and my friends.

However, there was one thing I could always do; I could learn by heart. In due course, the teacher returned.

“Have you learned it?” he asked. “I think I can say it, Sir,” I replied. I gabbled it off. He seemed to be satisfied with it. My fears were a bit allayed. I hated the school. What a life of anxiety at the school! I wept in my heart at the loss of my freedom. I yearned for my mother’s kisses, love and tenderness. I badly missed the cakes and biscuits. I badly missed my friends. I was deprived of my games and pranks. I lost all smiles and joy. I counted the minutes and hours to the end of the daily round of school.

200 During the recess period, all my class fellows crowded around me. One pulled my ear, another my shirt and the third pulled my hair. A boy knocked me to the gro ground. I received bruises on my knees and elbows. I could not help crying.

At 4 o’clock, the last bell rang. I made for home along with my village fellows. I told everything to my mother. I wept but she consoled me and advised me to bear it all. My fears were not dispelled. But there was no way out of it. I must go to school and face the teacher’s rod.

I study at St Martin’s High School, Civil Lines, Lucknow. The school has four buildings. My class de four b is in the building for primary children. The beautiful garden, the grassy lawn and the Ashoka trees along the pathways make the school a beautiful sight.

Besides the beautiful buildings, my school also has a basketball court, a huge field for outdoor games, a swimming pool and a canteen where fresh food is cooked everyday.

Our school takes part in inter-school hockey, football and cricket tournaments, as also in debates and elocution contests. Our school has won many trophies, especially for debates and football.

Every year, our senior students from Class X and XII secure very good results and our school is on the merit list every year.

The principal of our school is a great scholar and our teachers are highly qualified and well trained, so we students get a good foundation in our studies. I am certainly very proud to belong to a school like this.

After about two months of summer vacation, our school reopened on the 16th of July, the 15th of July being the Sunday. After a long relaxation of two months inhabits to wake up late in the morning, I got up early in the morning. I took my breakfast and left for school. The school was to open at 9 a.m.

On one hand, I seemed to be quite enthusiastic to be again with my friends whom I really missed during the vacation but on the other, I seemed to be averse to the routine of the school which was not so exhilarating for its disciplined code of attending classes and reading lessons, solving sums and doing laboratory work Still there was something which made this routine somewhat worth doing.

On the way to school, I met my friends. Everyone looked cheerful. As we reached the school gate, we heard the ringing of the call bell. We first buried to our classrooms to keep our bags and then to prayer ground to attend the prayer. At the end of the prayer, our Principal addressed the boys. In his address, the Principal mentioned Wordsworth’s observation, “A twig is bent, so the tree will grow”. In relation to tender and delicate students he said that the minds of students were like photographic plates, whatever impressions are left on them, they retain it. So he advised us to cast the impressions which would include love of the motherland, devotion to duty, regularity, and punctuality. Then at the end of his address, we all went to our classes.

On the first day, we did not have our regular studies. Most of the teachers were busy with new admissions. Moreover, the students were also not in the mood to study. The students were talking about their experiences of the summer vacation. I told them about my visit to Ajanta, Allora, and stay in Nanital for a fortnight. In school, 1 found a large number of changes, broken window panes had been replaced, rooms were whitewashed and the furniture repaired. Everything looked new. The thing which I liked most was the water cooler, which was a great comfort to us in summer.

While we were enjoying gossiping in the class, the bell announced the beginning of the recess period. This year a new canteen was installed in the school. It was run by ‘Students Cooperative Society”. I went to the canteen with my friends. The tea, coffee, cold drinks, and snacks all were available at cheap rates. I had a cold drink and some snacks there. In the meantime, the call bell rang and we all went back to our classes.

After the fifth period, all the students assembled in the hall. The new corners were seated on the stage. At first, the Principal welcomed the new students. Some of them seemed to be very active and smart. They told about their likings and hobbies, which were admirable. In the end, the Principal welcomed the teachers. Soon the function came to an end. returned home with the sweet and happy memories of the day.

My -father gave him the packet of candies and requested him to introduce me to the class and distribute the candies among my classmates. My father then took leave of him.

My teacher took me to my class. He told the boys that I was their new classmate. He then distributed the candies my father had given to him.

I was given a seat in the class. It was a new place and soon I started feeling lonely. Nobody in the class was known to me and no one talked to me. By recess time I was almost fed up with my school. I wanted to go home. The bell rang for recess. The boys from all the classes ran out. They flooded the school courtyard. But I stood alone in the crowd of strangers. I still remember how small I was then. Being unable to bear it any longer I began to cry. It was only a few minutes but it seemed ages before in brother arrived there. With him was another boy whose brother was also studying in my class. He brought him and introduced him to me. This was my first acquaintance in school. After the recess, we re-entered the classroom.

My teacher was told how I had cried during recess. He spoke politely to me. I liked him. I liked my new acquaintance also. Soon I felt calm and since that day I had never cried in school.

When I passed class V, my father took me to Jain Happy Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj, Delhi.  My father took us there in his car. The sight of the grand building made me nervous. I entered the main gate. Many boys were sitting there in a group.

We went to the Principal. My father had a talk with him. My father filled out the admission form. He admitted me to the sixth standard. Then my father left for his office.

My elder brother was in the 8th grade in the same school. I still remember my first day in school. It was an interesting day for me. I was nine years old at that time.

There were about 3o students in the class. They were in their uniforms. They were reading the first lesson from the English Book. The class teacher was kind. She made me sit in the first row. Whenever I ponder over my school days, the reflection takes me to a meek quiet boy. A reserve guy with quiet habits, feeling shy of everything. I find him dressed in khaki shorts and a white shirt, a pair of bright shining shoes with white socks. Well combed hair and slightly oiled face may be due to perspiration or nervousness. My father was transferred to Jalandhar from Shimla. The transfer came in the mid-session of the fourth class. I moved quite extensively from corner to corner with my father for admission, but everywhere, the answer was negative. It was after laborious efforts that D.A.V. Public School accepted to accommodate me in the new class.

In the next stage, my father left me at the school gate the next day and asked me, to proceed to my class. He perhaps felt that I was grown up enough to protect my own interest. I was moving towards the stairs with a very heavy and hesitant mind. Nobody was known to me except my class teacher who examined my papers for admission. He was perhaps sitting in the classroom because the morning assembly was already over. He was marking attendance as I stood at the entrance gate of the class. I was told that there were forty students in the class and myself was forty-one. Anyway, very reluctantly I peeped into the room. The teacher saw me and said, “Hello Sunil, so you have come. Come in and take your seat with Suresh on the first bench.” The only student on the desk accommodated me very willingly and provided me a seat with a helping and affectionate hand. Soon we were good friends. We were taught a new topic in the social study by the teacher. He asked some questions from the students which were not answered well. I took the initiative and answered all the questions to the best of my knowledge. The teacher was satisfied and enlisted me among the best ten students in the class.

It was recess time soon after and we all started playing in the central ground. Suresh introduced me to many other students of the class. The bell rang and we rushed to the class. Similar phases of the morning session repeated in the next period of Mathematics and English. The concerned teachers appreciated my capability at studies and this helped me to gain better confidence in myself. Soon the periods were over we were asked to pack up for return. My class teacher guided me to proceed towards the bus. The conductor shook hands with me and welcomed me for a good seat. It was a beautiful and well-provided bus. I reached home in an hour. My mother was waiting for me on the main crossing. She asked me about the school and its teaching staff. I gave all the best appreciation to my teachers and told my mother that I had formed a good number of friends and that I enjoyed the day very nicely. She was happy that my silence and hesitation has ultimately wound up for good. She felt happy that I could fit in well in the new setup and atmosphere.

I Invited My Students to Be the Principal for a Day. Here’s What I Learned

There is tired and then there’s “educator tired.”

More meetings, more conflicts to mediate, more data to collect and analysis overload, and more staffing decisions—the to-do list is exhausting. By springtime, most of us are operating on empty tanks while battling a seasonal-affective slump carried over from the winter.

With some degree of consistency, we can predict the times of the year when staff morale is highest, as well as the months when you can expect teachers to be crawling toward the finish line of upcoming school breaks. I heard a person once say, “If we can predict it, then we can influence it.”

In this biweekly column , principals and other authorities on school leadership—including researchers, education professors, district administrators, and assistant principals—offer timely and timeless advice for their peers.

Like many principals, I’m an optimistic person by nature. But in mid-February, I felt myself struggling to change my heartache of stress into heartfelt joy.

When I analyzed why I was feeling this way, it became clear that I wasn’t living my “why” for working in public education. I was drowning in meetings that discussed adult issues instead of being focused on student learning and the experience of being a student at my school.

After consulting with a colleague, I decided to change how I was spending my time at work. That small change had a huge impact on my ability to refocus and feel fulfilled.

Several years ago, I participated in a principal challenge for which I shadowed a student for a day. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to better understand my school from a student’s perspective.

As I reflected on how to reenergize several months ago, I decided to try this activity once again at my new school—but with a twist. I wanted to help bridge the divide between students and adults. This time, I offered my students the opportunity to be principal for the day by following me as I made my rounds with classroom visits and staff member meetings.

My request of the students who joined me was simple: 1) Get parent permission, 2) be responsible for the work you missed in class, 3) communicate with your teachers that you would be with me for the day, and 4) write up a one-page summary of the events of the day and your reflections.

To my surprise, I was flooded with student requests. Just the idea of having a shared experience with the students we serve was uplifting. I marveled at the idea that students would want to know what my job entailed. It was a great way to connect and build kinship between students and the leaders that serve them.

What I imagined would be one day with one student shadowing me evolved into three days of multiple students per day participating in this activity.

Here are some of the lessons from the students who joined me:

• Students and staff have a right to speak up, even if they are the only dissenting voice.
• Keep an open mind when people bring concerns to you. The importance of growing from mistakes was highlighted.
• Treat everyone with respect, no matter their position.
• Communication should be two ways, not a monologue.
• Make time to help others.

They enjoyed seeing the authentic and positive relationships that occur between administration and students and staff, but I was just as happy to learn from the students. They shared that they were surprised to see how well staff got along with each other behind the scenes, as well as with students in the hallways and classrooms. Our first shadow-the-principal day was March 14 (aka Pi Day in the math world), so the students had a chance to eat pie while talking with teachers in the math workroom.

My “apprentices” also enjoyed hearing a student share his idea for completing his Eagle Scout project that provided diabetic kits for students in need. He and I brainstormed various ways to complete the project, as well as how to market and sustain it in the years to come. The students later commented that they were surprised to observe an administrator working alongside their peers, generating ideas together.

Besides circulating throughout the school and speaking with a number of students and staff, the apprentices and I discussed ways that artificial intelligence could be used to facilitate teaching and learning in a positive way. I always find it enlightening to hear students’ technology ideas, including for AI use—for example, to assist with study tips or to organize their notes—were as innovative as I had heard from any presenters.

Finally, we ended the day by taking a stroll around the track at our football stadium. I shared that I like to go outside as much as I can to exercise and gather my thoughts. I try to do that once per week as part of my self-care routine. The students shared that they were pleasantly surprised to hear me prioritize that type of activity and that they thought their peers would benefit from such an activity as well.

I’m proud of my students for taking a chance on being a leader for the day. Students in 2024 have so many pressures facing them, so accepting one more thing can be a daunting task.

Here’s a challenge for everyone reading this article: Make time to prioritize your own “why.” This is especially important as we enter the final marking period of the year, when emotions tend to run high and stamina tends to wane.

Fill your tank with the kind of energy that inspired you to enter our profession. Look for the moments in your school on a daily basis when you can be kind, learn something new, build a new relationship, and spend time with those that brought you into a career in education—your students!

WCWS media day recap: Stanford softball 'excited' to see what NiJaree Canady does in OKC

The Women’s College World Series is set to begin Thursday at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.

Eight teams will compete in a double-elimination tournament with a national championship on the line. And while No. 2-seeded OU hopes to win its fourth straight title, it'll have to earn it against a stacked field.

Here’s what each team had to say during media day on Wednesday:

Stanford is 'excited' to see what NiJaree Canady does in WCWS

No. 8 Stanford is the third-lowest seed in the field for the Women’s College World Series.

But it has a not-so-secret weapon that makes it as dangerous as any team. It has sophomore pitcher NiJaree Canady, who won USA Softball’s Collegiate Player of the Year award on Tuesday.

Canady ranks first in the nation in both ERA (0.65) and strikeouts (310). And she’s eager to lead Stanford as it begins its WCWS run with a game against No. 1 Texas at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“It's incredible,” Canady said. “Honestly, it's a dream come true to be here, to play in Oklahoma City and to get that (Player of the Year) honor. It's almost everything I could have dreamt up. Next thing is the national championship.”

Stanford reached the WCWS last season, and Canady showed out as a freshman. 

She appeared in all four games for the Cardinal, which reached the semifinals. Canady only gave up three earned runs in 18 ⅔ innings, and she racked up 25 strikeouts along the way.

It was a dominant stretch by Canady, and the reigning Collegiate Player of the Year has only stepped up her game since then.

“I think when we were here last year, NiJaree appeared as if she had been here a million times,” Stanford senior catcher Aly Kaneshiro said. “I was absolutely blown away by her. Nonetheless, she put in a ton of work in the offseason, fall, winter and this entire season. She just has continued to get better. 

“Her toughness, her competitiveness was never in question. … I'm excited to see what she does this year, for sure."

Texas is 'going to be ready' for rematch against NiJaree Canady, Stanford

The Longhorns will begin their Women's College World Series run with a familiar foe in the Cardinal.

No. 1 Texas will face No. 8 Stanford at 6 p.m. Thursday. It’ll be a rematch of two teams that split a pair of regular-season meetings.

“They’re a tough club,” Texas head coach Mike White said. “They’re fired up. … But we're going to be ready. That's what it is. That's what makes this thing great is that it's a new day. It's 0-0, so let's go.”

Texas earned a 9-2 win over Stanford in the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational on Feb. 16. 

It was a dominant performance by the Longhorns, who scored eight runs in the first three innings and never looked back. But their second meeting with the Cardinal proved to be far more challenging.

Stanford rolled out star pitcher NiJaree Canady, who was named USA Softball’s Collegiate Player of the Year, in its road game against Texas on Feb. 24. The Cardinal earned a 4-3 win in eight innings, and Canady pitched the whole game.

Canady racked up 11 strikeouts in the process. The sophomore ace will surely get the start on Thursday against Texas, which is hoping for a different result in the rubber match.

“NiJaree is just such a great pitcher,” Texas catcher Reese Atwood said. “She won that (Player of the Year) award last night for a reason. One of the best pitchers I've ever faced. 

“Going into this weekend, I'm going to make sure the team is on track to do what we do best, get on top of her rise ball, get a good pitch to hit. I think that's going to be key facing her.”

Alabama hopes to pull off ‘some more’ upsets in WCWS

As Alabama head coach Patrick Murphy sat down for his press conference on Wednesday, he asked the media a question.

“How many of you expected me to be here?” Murphy asked with a huge grin while pointing at the crowd.

No hands were raised. 

No. 14 Alabama enters the Women’s College World Series as the field’s lowest seed, and it beat the odds to reach Oklahoma City.

Alabama won the Knoxville Super Regional over No. 3 Tennessee, 2-1, in dramatic fashion. After suffering a 3-2 loss in Game 1, the Crimson Tide outlasted the Volunteers for a 3-2 win in a Game 2 that lasted 14 innings.

Alabama then earned a 4-1 win in Game 3 to secure its spot in the WCWS for the second straight season.

“I think it prepares us for everything,” Alabama graduate pitcher Kayla Beaver said of the Knoxville Super Regional. “Tennessee was selected to be a national championship team. They were a contender for it. They were an amazing competition.”

Alabama will be the underdog once again when it begins the WCWS with a game against No. 6 UCLA at 11 a.m. Thursday. 

But that has never been an issue for the Crimson Tide.

“We did what we did,” Beaver said. “Now we're here to do it some more.”

UCLA enters WCWS with 'battle tested' team

The first inning of the Bruins' first game set the tone for their season.

UCLA faced Maryland in the Stacy Winsberg Tournament on Feb. 9, and it trailed 4-0 with the first inning in the books. It was an early test for the Bruins, who rallied to earn a 6-5 victory.

"That's how our season started," UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez said. "But I think the whole season, there's a journey for a reason. You learn your lessons and really figure out who you are as a team."

No. 6 UCLA has overcome plenty of obstacles since then on its way to the Women's College Series, where it'll begin with a game against No. 14 Alabama at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The Bruins lost two starters to injuries in the first week. They began with a 3-4 record. They navigated a competitive Pac-12 en route to a conference regular-season and tournament title.

And as UCLA prepares to navigate an even more competitive field in the WCWS, Inouye-Perez feels her team is ready for the challenge.

"We built a lot of trust," Inouye-Perez said. "I believe that we're battled tested. ... When things got hard, certain people quit and there's other people that level up. This team decided to keep moving forward and continue to improve even though it was very challenging. The entire season prepared us for that."

Lexi Kilfoyl is ‘playing my game’ as OSU’s ace pitcher

The term “ace” in softball refers to a team’s star pitcher.

An ace is leaned on, far more than anyone else in the pitching staff, and she's often viewed as the most important player on the team. It’s a common term, but it’s one OSU pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl isn’t fond of.

“I don't like the term ‘ace’ because I know a pitching staff, it takes every single one of us,” Kilfoyl said. “That was one of our things this year, we were going to use all of us.”

Kilfoyl is too unselfish to call herself an ace.

But the graduate pitcher fits that mold for No. 5 Oklahoma State, which begins its WCWS run with a game against No. 4 Florida at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Kilfoyl boasts a career highs of 146 strikeouts and 171 innings pitched this season, and she was recently named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year.

Kilfoyl is in a lead role for the first time in her career. She spent three seasons at Alabama, which boasted a deep pitching staff. She then transferred to OSU, where she split time pretty evenly inside the circle with Kelly Maxwell last season.

But Maxwell has embraced an ace-like role this season, even if she isn’t a fan of the term.

“Honestly, I feel like the coaches helped me along the way,” Maxwell said. “(I’m) just playing my game with the support of my teammates, support of the coaches. I think if I put that term aside, I think you naturally fall into that place.”

Duke ‘wants to win’ in its first-ever WCWS appearance

Duke is the new kid on the block in the Women’s College World Series.

This is only the seventh season in program history for the Blue Devils, and they’re making their first-ever WCWS appearance. It’s uncharted territory for Duke, which has visualized itself in this position for quite some time.

“We weren't just happy to be a new softball program,” Duke head coach Marissa Young said. “We wanted to be great. We wanted to compete for championships from Day 1.”

The Blue Devils came close to reaching the WCWS in each of the past two seasons.

Duke reached the Super Regional round for the first time in 2022, but it suffered a 2-0 series loss to UCLA. It then reached the Super Regionals again last season only to suffer a 2-0 series loss to Stanford.

But this season was different. 

Duke earned a 2-1 series win over Missouri in the Columbia Super Regional. The Blue Devils booked their ticket to the WCWS with a 4-3 victory in a Game 3 thriller that lasted nine innings.

No. 10 Duke will begin with a game against No. 2 Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Playing at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in what’s sure to be a road-like environment will be a different experience for the Blue Devils, but their mentality won’t change.

“We definitely come into this College World Series with the same mindset,” Young said. “We're not just happy to be here for the first time. We want to win, and we want to compete.”

Jocelyn Erickson, transfer additions have been 'a plus' for Florida

Tim Walton has experienced plenty of success throughout his 19 seasons as Florida’s head coach.

The Gators have made 12 Women’s College World Series appearances during that stretch, and they’ve won national championships in 2014 and 2015.

Florida is a softball powerhouse, and one key to its success as of late has been adding talent via the transfer portal. 

“Transfers sometimes are actually better than high school recruits,” Walton said. “They already know what they either didn't have or do have or want. There's a lot of things that can be a plus.”

No. 4 Florida boasts five All-SEC first team players on its roster, and three of them are transfers.

Redshirt senior Skylar Wallace spent the first two seasons of her college career at Alabama before she joined Florida. She has since recorded 174 RBIs and 41 home runs on .413 hitting in three seasons with the Gators.

Another example is OU transfer Jocelyn Erickson, who arrived at Florida on July 14. The sophomore has racked up 80 RBIs and 13 home runs on .390 hitting this season, which earned her SEC Player of the Year honors.

Erickson helped OU win a national championship as a freshman last season. Now, she’s a leader on a Florida team that'll begin its WCWS run with a game against No. 5 Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

“Jocelyn came in with the goals, Day 1, of what she wanted to be,” Walton said. “Then most importantly, she's a great teammate and a great leader and competitor on the field. … She's been a fantastic addition culturally, on and off the field.”

Oklahoma will lean on 'special' senior class in WCWS

Rylie Boone. Alyssa Brito. Jayda Coleman. Kinzie Hansen. Tiare Jennings. Karlie Keeney. Riley Ludlam. Nicole May. Kelly Maxwell. Alynah Torres.

Those 10 players make up OU’s senior class, which has helped the team win three straight national championships. 

And as the No. 2 Sooners prepare to begin another Women’s College World Series run with a game against No. 10 Duke at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, head coach Patty Gasso knows the legacy of her senior class is already cemented.

“This group of seniors is extremely special to this program,” Gasso said. “They'll go down in history not just at OU, but I personally would say across the country as one of the best classes softball has ever seen. Proud of that. Proud of their work ethic.”

This season has been different from previous ones for the Sooners’ senior class.

OU saw its NCAA record 71-game winning streak get snapped with a 7-5 loss to Louisiana. It suffered its first series loss to Texas since 2009. It went 54-6, which is tied for its most losses since 2019.

And, finally, OU isn’t the top seed in the WCWS for the first time since 2018. Still, the Sooners and their seniors don't feel outside pressure as they try to win a fourth straight title.

“We're not here to prove anybody anything,” Gasso said. “We're going to do the best we can to win it as a team and not to prove to the world there's no doubt we are the best. We’ve got to earn this.

“Regardless, no matter what, I will still stand behind the statement that this is the best senior class that has ever been in softball.”
