  What You Should Know

The MFA degree prepares individuals who are interested in contributing to the academic discipline as well as the profession. Our international student body with its varying backgrounds, academic disciplines, and life experiences, creates an intellectually stimulating environment. Our students are a select group who come to Pratt to work hard in order to prepare themselves to enter a profession in which the designer must be nimble, multifaceted, and equipped with the skills necessary to provide innovative design solutions.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree in interior design, architecture, or other closely related design fields may be eligible to complete the M.F.A. in as little as two years, a total of 60 credits; a portfolio of academic and/or professional work is required.  

Applicants with undergraduate backgrounds that are unrelated to interior design or architecture are required to take a 24 credit Core Year of preparatory study, prior to continuing the M.F.A degree. These students may complete 84 credits in three years. A portfolio is required and the department recommends that applicants submit material that represents their best skills and knowledge related to their own background, experience, and interests. A required statement of purpose provides the opportunity for applicants to articulate how their background can inform, and has prepared them for the field of study in interior design at Pratt Institute.

Often times, I can enter an open room and simply visualize the possibilities of what that space can be. I possessed this knack from a young age. I found a thrill from organising spaces in a unique and creative manner. Much to my parents’ chagrin, Martha Stewart and Mary Kondo were my idols. As I grew, I start conceptualising about how a space can be used and endless possibilities for remodelling and expansion. After watching countless interior design shows and amassing a vast collection of Architectural Digest and Better Homes & Gardens, I realized my true passion lay in interior design. I would like to apply to the Interior Design program at University X because it will equip me with the skills and tools I need to design liveable and sustainable spaces.

In high school, I had the opportunity to complete an internship at Perfect Designs. The experience gave me a unique sense of satisfaction that I have never experienced before. Imagine being able to create a space that fulfils both form and function, while enhancing a person’s well-being. That’s what interior design means to me. As an intern, I assisted with showing room layouts and drawings to potential clients. I loved interacting with prospective customers, determining their needs, and translating it into something tangible through sketches and drawings. It was also exciting, learning about a client’s vision for the room and transforming it into something doable. In addition, the subjects Architectural Drawings, Design Applications, and Architectural Appreciation were my favourite. For my thesis, I examined suburban homes for modern families and how to incorporate sustainable building practices. My thesis was much appreciated by my professors. I graduated from the architecture program in XXXX with an X CGPA. While I waiting to hear a response from potential employers, I continued to enhance my design expertise by taking additional certification courses such as Computer Aided Interior Design, SketchUp, and Floor Planner.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I love exploring museums and historical edifices. I enjoy examining how spaces were utilised in various historical periods. I learned how to source materials and products for projects. I also improved in determining costs and overseeing projects to ensure that it was on track and met the requirements of the client. I have worked at this studio for the past two years and loved every moment. I have reached a pinnacle in my career where I want to expand my acumen in planning and product design. Architecture Masters Personal Statement Example

Architecture is my passion. I aspire to be an architect who employs unproven techniques in the field of architecture. For a town planning project during my childhood, our local government requested children to create dream homes. As I threw myself into accomplishing the assignment, the challenge captivated me. This incident is one of the countless incidents demonstrating that my passion is inborn and natural rather than the result of some external influence.

I’ve taken various measures to improve my construction and design skills since discovering them. I began my education at the King sway School of Construction Design for Kids, where I gained an early understanding of architectural applications. This experience broadened my knowledge of and interest in architecture. At this point, I chose to pursue a career as an architect. After deciding on a profession, I felt determined to pursue the career opportunities that architecture provided. My life had now become architecture.

After graduating from high school, I enrolled in Emerson Architecture College to improve my architectural talents on a more professional level. The training there expanded my creative horizons. And I started identifying architectural problems and their remedies wherever I went. Environmental architecture and craftsmanship classes allowed me to combine various existent ideas into new or distinctive outputs.

My level of creativity surpassed my expectations. I also learned digital architecture, three-dimensional modeling, and how to use various architectural programs and technology. I am not nearly as talented as I would like to be as an architect; I have an insatiable thirst for architectural knowledge. My innovativeness and ingenuity are fed by my appetite. This understanding is what allows me to design architectural solutions to the challenges I see around me.

I want to be a restoration architect. This passion began following a vacation trip to Paris. As I explored architecture, I realized it portrays our societies’ heritage and history in a way that helps us think critically about our past.

Observing the works of architectural greats has also encouraged me to seek excellence in my career in architecture. In light of this, I have decided to pursue my master’s degree at a school known for producing excellent architects.

To achieve this level of quality, I would like to apply for admission as a master’s student at your institution. This will greatly help me to broaden my understanding of different unfinished architectural difficulties. My goal is to gain information and put it to good use for the benefit of humanity. This will finally bring my dream of being a sophisticated urban planner to fruition .

Art and design personal statement example 4.

I am anxious to become a creator, to design and produce things that somehow improve people’s lives, inspire them to become creators themselves - I grew up in a household full of music and art, and developed a fascination with the creations I saw around me. Before I decided what I wanted to do I knew that I wanted to create and tell stories, and I realised that there were different aspects of Art and Design beyond fine art that I could completely submerge myself in and never get bored; illustration, graphics, film.

Looking at the work of visionary creators such as Wes Anderson and Saul Bass have helped in deepening my knowledge and opinions on design, particularly for illustration and film, and given me perspective on something which was previously a hobby. This has given me confidence to experiment and attempt to produce pieces that will create change, no matter how small scale this change may be - for example, in one person's life or even day. I have always loved how art can challenge me and how I think, and I have learned from it, realising that art doesn’t have to be traditionally ‘beautiful’; it can be whatever you want it to be. The aspects of design that fascinate me are those that surround us: Type, architecture, film. We live our lives in art, and I can’t wait to be a part of that.

Because of this I have tried to travel to as many exhibitions as possible, my favourite being the London Illustration Fair – the combination of so many different styles and approaches is fascinating to me and a source of huge inspiration in my own work.

Academically, I think that psychology and English have played very well off of art and helped me to understand the discipline holistically, as well as allowing me to continue with academic studies alongside art, something that’s important to me in both an educational and professional sense – when I’ve sold commissions or illustration pieces I’ve always tried to use aspects of literature and psychology to inform the mood and intention of the work, no matter how simple the design is.

Another example of the way other parts of my live have informed my art practice would be the three weeks I spent travelling in Europe in August 2015 - we visited ten countries, some with sublime scenery, others with bustling cities, and all with fascinatingly different ways of life, allowing me to draw on these experiences as inspiration for my illustrations. I love sketching quickly, getting the idea and shape of a subject rather than the finite detail, and being able to develop this. My experience travelling allowed me to have a plethora of fast-moving models right in front of me, giving me an invaluable store of references for my work, straight from life.

Externally to my studies at University, a thriving theatre department is something I’d love to take part in behind the scenes, working in the art department to really help a production come to life. As well as this, I was on the Student Union at my Sixth Form college, firstly as Equality and Diversity officer and then as a Student Governor, and I’m very interested in joining similar societies while at University. This position, along with my jobs and Silver D of E, encouraged me to develop my public speaking and debating skills, allowing me to voice my opinions more freely and enjoy working as a leader and part of a team – for example, I worked with my Equality and Diversity counterpart during Upper Sixth to help introduce gender-neutral bathrooms at our college, which I could not have been part of without the skills from Student Union.

After my Foundation and Bachelor’s degree, I want to study for a Masters in Production or Set Design or enter the world of production itself, to help me towards becoming a practising Production Designer or Art Director: careers which I believe would give me a life doing something I love and, most importantly, helping me to inspire others.
