When we started our Creative Writing Short Term Course in Delhi at the Sri Aurobindo Centre for Arts and Communication nearly eight years ago, we had not imagined the response it would attract. It has been overwhelming. At the beginning of 2019, we had started our 26th course. We joyfully saw how numerous participants used the course as a jumping point to start a new writing journey. Some got into professional writing, some became authors, some took up jobs as content writers, copywriters or editors and some enjoyed different forms of blogging.

So, we started this unique course with the intention of helping participants sharpen their writing skills. After all, within all of us, there is a writer struggling to get out. We all have stories to narrate. All that we need is to learn how to become interesting storytellers narrating it in a written form using various tools and techniques.

Yes, writing can be taught! We experience it every week in our classes!

Every batch has been unique and colourful. It has hardly surprised us as they come from varied backgrounds. It is probably the sole reason for this course being successful. MA Literary Art

Applicants need to have a Bachelors degree in any discipline with minimum 45% marks or equivalent grade from a recognised university (Relaxation of 5% marks for SC/ST/PwBD/D-OBC (NCL)/Defence/KM).

Eligibility

Candidates must display a keen interest in literary history and genericity, in addition to some knowledge and appreciation of a range of literary texts. 

Since 2012, the M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme has pioneered the pedagogy of Creative Writing in India with its unique insistence on inculcating in the student both the practice and the theory of literary writing. It imagines a writer as inhabiting a range of literary, historical, social & existential horizons, each of which have their bearing on the nature and depth of individual literary output.

The programme aims to produce writers who are self-reflective and critically aware of the literary, social and cultural landscape of the region and the period they inhabit. It hopes to produce writers who are self-directed and have a unique individual literary voice.

The programme furthers the mandate of AUD to promote attributes of creativity, social responsibility and sensitivity among students, so that they become socially productive and engaged citizens. Additionally, the program combines a strong praxis orientation with a commitment to critical scholarship and interdisciplinarity. It furthers the emphasis on self-directed learning through a classroom based, continuous workshop model, individual research, and the production of creative manuscripts through an engagement with the experiential as well as the social.

At its inception, the School of Culture and Creative Expressions (SCCE) was envisaged as a site where both the theoretical and the practice mode were equally privileged in order to develop a new pedagogy of the creative arts. The M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme is a realization of this pedagogic model, combining equally rigorous reading, writing and theoretical components.

It is a two year M.A. Programme with two semesters each year. A semester is of sixteen weeks duration. The students should register for a minimum of 16 credits each semester and need to earn 64 credits to complete the Programme. They may register for more credits on payment of extra fees. All the students of SCCE need to take three common Foundational Courses, one each in the first three semesters, for 12 credits in total. They should also take four Elective Courses offered by the School or any other School in the University, one each in all the four semesters, for 16 credits in total. They need to take seven compulsory Core Courses from their respective discipline (in this case Literary Art Creative Writing) for 28 credits in total. Their MA dissertation in the final semester will earn them eight credits.

• Critical Creative-Practice and Thought: The Programme seeks to develop the profile of the writer as a committed intellectual well-versed in the literary, social, cultural, political and aesthetic movements of the modern period, and able to find/devise forms and strategies suitable for their creative work
• Disciplinary Knowledge: Students should be able to demonstrate a deep familiarity with the fields of literature and forms/strategies of creative writing available to them
• Multicultural and Historical Competence: To produce writers aware and widely-read in the literary history of the medieval and ancient epochs both of Asia (especially the Indian subcontinent) and of the West
• Self-Reflective: To encourage an editorial bent of mind and capacity of reading/re-reading and a capacity for thought/writing that is aesthetically self-reflexive
• Self-Expression, Creative Thinking and Self-Directed Learning: To inculcate the capacity among students to express themselves confidently in writing and in presentation of their creative work, to imprint on a students' literary oeuvre the mark of originality, to develop an ability to manoeuvre drafts and think creatively about its progress and changes, and to inculcate a discipline of writing and a strong appreciation for the writerly process
• Digitally Literate: To demonstrate an ability to use and navigate a wide variety of digital resources, including but not limited to Video databases, video and text blogs, archival databases and journal databases.
• Social, Cultural and Ethical Awareness: An ability to demonstrate Social, Cultural and Ethical Awareness for the region and period they inhabit, especially in relation to issues of representation and marginality

Is this a Practice-based programme?

The M.A. Literary Art Creative Writing programme combines both creative writing practice (workshop model) and analytical courses. The students get an opportunity to pursue their creative practice as writers (writing fiction, non-fiction or poetry in the practice-based courses) even as their critical thinking is honed by a set of analytical courses. We believe that both these sets of courses are equally important for the development of our students as creative writers.

The syllabus is outdated and for a year or two the course was not conducted and people who had registered were’nt intimated about updates. Since I am looking for a distance learning program, hence i am left with SCDL, Pune (as only IGNOU and SCDL have distance learning program on Creative Writing). I registered for DCE in June with IGNOU in July my classes are only going to start on October :P. They told me that I have to attend 1 class every month in study centre. I also registered with SDCL from there I get a message every day that admission is extended a week more :P. let’s see what will happen NB: I paid ignou fees it’s just 3k. Not having the courage to spend 22k on sdcl at least for now let’s see. will update you.

Yes, I was told the same thing about Study Centre,that I need to attend at least one in a month, which is really difficult for me, considering how much I travel.

Well, surprise! IGNOU has sent me all the course material through courier. However submitting projects is still unclear. Timeline of the course is a bit vague as well. However all course books are with me. Content looks pretty decent. For all the aspirants out there, I suggest you to go ahead with the diploma in Creative Writing if its impossible for you to attend workshops or classroom certificate courses.

Fee structure : 3300 Payment can be done by debit card. They will send all material by post. No exams. A project at the end of the course. Every info is available at their site.

I am looking up for an MFA in creative writing which I guess is not worth if done in India. But if you have any idea about the course which would be beneficial if done here itself, do let me know. Because Symbiosis has a distance program which is like, we are just playing in the sands, instead of going in the oceans for much adventure. I have done one course from Symbiosis (SCDL), syllabus is really updated but it didn’t helped me out as I found myself without guidance. I will rather suggest opt for the course where classes are held at least you can have a coach to guide you further.

Admissions are possible for International Students at IGNOU, although the fee varies. I have emailed them about registration process for international students. Having said that my goal is MFA is English, as I like to pursue Creative Writing Diploma at a more modern institute with up-to date techniques in writing. I have taken your advise and enrolled in the course offered by the Michigan state University. Having deprived o the opportunity to choose a field of my liking during college, I like to pursue a cheap yet decent MFA degree. Do you have any suggestions about the Masters degree in English from IGNOU? I have no clue about the curriculum offered. To me all looks good as long as its literature. Departmental Activities

Students of English are exposed to a variety of lectures and talks that helps them to be aware of the recent trends in academic and career opportunities. The invited speakers are eminent academicians working in Indian and foreign universities. Some of the recent speakers include Professor B.N. Patnaik, Retd Prof IIT Chennai; Dr. Hephzibah Israel, University of Edinburgh; Professor Sonjoy Dutta-Roy, University of Allahabad; Dr Rimina Mohapatra, Head Academic Publishing Routledge, India, Dr Uma Jayaraman, National University of Singapore, etc. This year The Carrel, had a special emphasis on Queer Literature with interviews from eminent personalities like Queer studies’ theorist Judith Butler and LGBTQ+ activist Sharif Rangnekar. The ELA hosts regular interactions with creative writers to help students understand the necessary process of writing fiction, poetry and translation. Recently the ELA organized an international creative writing workshop titled ‘A Good Short Story Never Ends’ with Dr. Rijula Das as the guest speaker. Her short story 'Notes from a Passing' won her the Dastaan Award in 2016 and Michael King Writers Centre Residency in Auckland in 2019. The workshop explored the creative process involved and other technical aspects in writing a short story. Another online creative writing workshop was organised with the renowned novelist Shubhangi Swarup as the guest speaker, on ‘Stories Without Sapiens- How to Tell Stories That Don’t Revolve Us’. She won the Tata Litlive award for her debut novel 'Latitudes of Longing' and the Sushila Devi award for women's writing. The workshop covered various aspects of creative story writing focusing on stories without humans. Other eminent writers who have visited the college include William Dalrymple, Patrick French, translators Arunava Sinha, Aruna Chakrabarty etc. Students are also encouraged to participate in various competitions such as paper presentations, and panel discussions. Recently a competition was organised by the ELA on the topic ‘Gratification Through the Visual: Women and Cinema’. Participants, judges and the audience engaged themselves in a virtual interactive session discussing the politics of the depiction and representation of the female body through cinema and in-depth analysis on the idea of the Male Gaze. Students of various colleges participated. THE ELA festival Pantheon was organised in virtual mode on 25th of February, 2021. Centered around the theme Goth and Otherness. Kavya Sharma was the judge for the Slam Poetry competition. She holds a masters in Creative Writing from the University of Nottingham, England. She has authored two books till now and apart from that her poems/short fictions have been featured in various anthologies and literary magazines. Sharma has been recognised as the 100 Most Inspiring Authors from India, 2018 by The Indian Awaaz, Author of the Year by NE8X and has also been awarded The Honourable Mention by Delhi Poetry Slam for excellence in poetry in their Free Verse Poetry Contest. She is also the Founder and Editor-in-chief of Verse of Silence, a literary platform which comes out with a creative magazine quarterly and also conducts poetry readings and online competitions across India.
