Blackboard (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Access and Grade Student Submissions

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Knowledgebase

Turnitin Feedback Studio is an online tool that is used for grading papers, presentations, and other student work. Work submitted through Turnitin can be marked up with Feedback Studio using the standard as well as customized grading marks. While Feedback Studio itself does not analyze or identify spelling, grammatical, or citation style errors, if e-rater has been enabled during the Turnitin assignment creation process, e-rater will analyze spelling and grammar.

Feedback Studio can be utilized within a Blackboard course. It does not have to be used in conjunction with the Turnitin originality reporting capability. Instructors must first set up a Turnitin assignment before using Feedback Studio features. Once assignments have been submitted, papers can then be graded using Feedback Studio. See the Create a Turnitin Assignment knowledge base article for detailed instructions regarding how to set up a Turnitin assignment.

  • Go to the assignment link in the coursework/content area or folder. Click on the assignment link. The Turnitin Assignment Inbox will open.

Feedback Studio Tools

Feedback Studio incorporates the originality checker and the grading tools in one screen. When entering a student's paper, Feedback Studio will default to the Instructor Comment panel, located in blue on the right side of the screen. The red panel are the tools for the Originality checker.

This will also check for replaced characters. Students may try to replace an "a" with a Cyrillic letter "a" that looks similar but fools the algorithm within Turnitin from identifying direct quotes.

The second icon in the Similarity panel is the Match Overview.  This number indicate the percentage of materials matched to outside sources.  Note: This does not mean that the source has been plagiarized. This includes quotes, bibliography materials, and similar phrases as determined when setting up the Turnitin Assignment.

For Students

If your course’s instructor has set up a Turnitin Feedback Studio assignment through Blackboard, you should be able to access the assignment through your course site. It will be in one of the content areas on the upper left; your instructor should specify which one. You should see each assignment listed separately, with a button saying View/Complete . This button will allow you to submit your assignment, whether from your hard drive or from Google Drive.

For Faculty

The Turnitin Feedback Studio consists of individual assignments that you can create in your course site that you can use to provide direct feedback to student submissions.

Max grade : Set a point value for the assignment to allow a grade to be set by rubrics (if used) and be sent to the grade book. For example, if you set the max grade as 100, this is the highest grade your student can receive.

Start date : The start date is the date and time students can begin submitting to the assignment.

Due date : The due date is the date and time students’ papers are due for the assignment.

Feedback release date : The feedback release date is the date and time students can begin viewing the comments and grades you have left on their papers. Feedback can only be released after the due date.

  • This drop-down list informs you of all of the papers that have been submitted to an assignment so far. It shows the student’s name on the left and the paper title on the right. Clicking on any of the submissions will change the Turnitin Feedback Studio to that paper.

The Assignment Inbox - Viewing Completed Assignments

Each assignment in a class has an assignment inbox. The assignment inbox contains any submissions that have been made by students or the instructor to the assignment.

  • The top menu bar has notifications, a link to our support wizard, and an option to edit the   assignment settings.
  • The search bar allows you to search through the students. The drop-down allows you to view your   group and group sets.
  • Select   Download All   to download all the papers. Use the check boxes next to the papers to select papers, then   Download Selected   to download these papers. This button becomes active after the first submission has been made to the assignment.

download turnitin assignments blackboard

The assignment inbox is a sorted list of columns containing information regarding submissions in an assignment. The assignment inbox can be organized by any of the criteria listed – for example, clicking on the column heading name of author will sort the contents of the assignment box by author last name from A to Z. Clicking the column heading again will sort it again by the reverse of the criteria, from Z to A.

The column headings in the assignment inbox are:

Author   – A column containing the names of any enrolled students and the names given for any non-enrolled instructor uploaded papers in the assignment.

Paper Title   – The title given for any paper submitted. If there is no submission for a user, this field will list “no submission”. Clicking on the title of a paper will open the paper in the Turnitin Feedback Studio viewer.

Paper ID   – The unique numeric ID number assigned to every submission made to Turnitin. This column contains a dash if no submission was made. The paper ID is also provided to students or instructors when submitting by file upload or copy and paste as part of the digital receipt.

Uploaded   – The date of a submission. Any dates shown in red indicate a late submission made after the due date and time of an assignment. The format is day-month-year. If no submission was made after the due date/time for a student, this column shows (late) in red. If the due date has not passed, students in the class with no submissions have a dash in this column.

Viewed   – This icon indicates whether the paper has been viewed by the student. If the eye has a strike through it, the paper has not been viewed.

Grade   – The grade column indicates GradeMark image availability. A blue pencil icon indicates that a paper is ready to be graded, but has not yet been graded. A gray pencil icon that no submission was made or that GradeMark digital assessment is not available for the class or account. Once a paper is graded, the point value given to the paper will replace the pencil icon in the grade column.

Similarity   – The Similarity column contains the Similarity Report icon. The icon contains a percentage indicating the overall similarity of the paper to information in the Turnitin repositories: 100% being ‘fully similar’, 0% indicating ‘no similarity’. The icon is rectangular and contains the percentage number and the corresponding color. If only a grayed out icon is available, the report is not ready. A dash in the report column indicates no submission or that no Similarity Report is generated based on assignment settings.

Options   – This menu will allow the instructor   to submit or resubmit on behalf of students, download the submission, or delete the submission.

Using the Thumbnail Sidebar

The thumbnail bar gives you a quick overview of the paper you are currently grading

  • The thumbnail bar can be accessed by clicking on the black tab in the left-hand corner of the Turnitin Feedback Studio.

Turnitin: A Student Guide to Downloading Feedback

Updated: 03/11/2021

After submitting work, it’s important that you make use of the feedback given to you by your tutors.

Step 1: Locate your assignment and feedback

You can view your provisional grades and Feedback (if given) from submitted Turnitin assignments by returning to the area in Blackboard where the assignment link is shown (i.e. wherever you submitted your assignment). The picture below shows the link to the Turnitin assignment.

download turnitin assignments blackboard

Step 2: Navigating the Turnitin Assignment Dashboard

download turnitin assignments blackboard

Once you click the assignment link you will be presented with this interface, explained below.

a. This gives a summary of the Assignment Instructions, Start Date, Due Date, Feedback Release date etc.

b. and c. These links allow you to view your submission along with feedback

d. This will display a similarity percentage (though this is usually hidden from students)

e. Upload another version of the assignment (if allowed and within the allotted time period)

f. Download the assignment

g. Download a PDF digital receipt of submission of assignment.

Step 3: Viewing the feedback

Once you click on b or c above, your assignment with marks and feedback will be opened in a new window.

download turnitin assignments blackboard

The provisional grade (or Mark) appears at the top right corner of the screen, typically showing a mark out of 100.

Feedback comments

The tutor may have added feedback comments directly to the pages in the form of ‘bubble’ comments. These appear as blue boxes, with either white text or a white speech bubble.

General comments

These may have been added to the piece of work and will be shown in the right-hand pane of the screen that you are viewing to see your work. General comments apply to the whole paper, as opposed to the comments added to particular parts of the paper. If your tutor has recorded a voice comment, this will be accessible from the same pane as the general comments. If a rubric has been used, it will also be accessible from this pane.

Downloading the document and feedback

download turnitin assignments blackboard

You will be able to view feedback directly on this page, however, it is recommended to ‘download’ the assignment by clicking on ‘Download’ in the screenshot above and selecting ‘Current View’ (circled above).

Please note: Make sure you save it to a personal folder or external drive. Do not save any of your personal files to a desktop in a computer cluster.

Your downloaded file will be a PDF and show your original essay and any Feedback Studio report information and feedback attached to your paper. Both ‘bubble’ and general comments will be given at the end of your work, as shown below. If a rubric has been used, this will be shown at the end of the paper.

download turnitin assignments blackboard

Things to keep in mind

  • Marks are not always provided through this interface, as sometimes penalties need to be applied to some submissions before mark release. In these cases, marks will usually be released via the intranet system.
  • Where marks are available, they are provisional and may be subject to change.
  • Different assignments are marked in different ways; please always check to see if “general feedback” or a “rubric” is provided with the assignment, as sometimes feedback is provided via these tools.
