What to See in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill

The Triangle region is a diverse area of North Carolina made up of several cities that have their own distinct personalities including Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill . Whether you're heading to the college town of Durham , where Duke University students attend classes or out to the State Capitol Building in Raleigh, there's plenty to do in this lush mountainous region any time of year.

Visit the Gardens at Duke University

Duke University is set in the heart of Durham. Here, you can stroll the grounds of the West Campus and take in the gothic architecture and the quadrangles of the residential campus. You also won't want to miss the Sarah P. Duke Gardens with its sprawling magnolias, where you can stand under the wisteria-covered gazebo and take in the magnificent formal gardens and koi pond. At Duke University, you could spend the whole day discovering the nooks and crannies of the native plant areas or losing yourself in the colors of the rose circle.

Take a Tour of North Carolina State University

North Carolina State University is located in Raleigh, the state capital. Start your tour at the Bell Tower at Hillsborough and Pullen that serves as a gateway to the main campus. Other highlights on the campus include the Brickyard, Gregg Art Museum, and the Solar House. Also, across Hillsborough street on the main campus is Mitch's Tavern, the oldest bar on the street and place where some scenes from the movie​ ​"Bull Durham" were filmed.

Finish Your College Circuit at UNC at Chapel Hill

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the oldest public university in the United States and consistently ranks at the top of the list of public universities nationwide. Today, the campus is a mixture of old and new. Visitors should make sure to stop by the Old Well, which is a symbol of the University. Campus lore says students who drink from the well will have good luck. Additionally, the on-campus arboretum is a wonderful place for a springtime stroll.

Browse Local Products at the Raleigh Farmers' Market

The Raleigh Farmer's Market is one of five farmers' markets owned by the state of North Carolina and operated by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. You can wander through 30,000 square feet of North Carolina-grown fresh produce (during the growing season) and plants (from March through October). The Raleigh Farmers Market is where you can find the freshest and widest variety of produce and plants in the area, but you also won't want to miss the market shops offering meats, cheeses, crafts, bakery items, and North Carolina wines. 

Walk Through the North Carolina Museum of Art

The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh is the state's premier art destination. Hosting major national touring exhibits, the museum is also home to one of the largest collections of Renoir sculptures in the United States and one of only two permanent displays of Jewish art in an American art museum. The 164-acre Museum Park is home to more than a dozen monumental sculptures, and the grounds feature an amphitheater that hosts three seasons of music, movies, and other programs. Iris, the restaurant located within the museum, is a wonderful place for brunch. Admission to the Museum’s permanent collection and Museum Park is free, but there is a charge for some special exhibitions and programs, such as concerts, films, classes, and performances.

Witness History at the North Carolina State Capitol

The North Carolina State Capitol building in Raleigh, completed in 1840, is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a major civic building in the Greek Revival architecture style. It contains its original 1840 legislative furniture, constructed by a local cabinetmaker, and is preserved by the State of North Carolina as a historic shrine, offering free admission to guests on weekdays year-round. Similar points of interest near the capitol building include the State Legislative Building and the Executive Mansion.

Go out on the Town at Glenwood South

The Glenwood South District of downtown Raleigh is the hip and trendy home to restaurants, shops, and nightlife. On warm evenings, the streets come to life with crowds of locals and tourists alike, making the neighborhood's al fresco restaurants great for exceptional people watching. The district’s nightlife completed a significant residential boom, with more than 900 new condos and apartments in the development.

Stop by the Nasher Museum of Art

The Nasher Museum of Art is dedicated to global contemporary and post-modern art. A burgeoning private collection supports an ever-changing array of forward-thinking exhibits and multimedia installations from diverse artists, authors, and timelines. The Nasher Museum is located at Duke University in Durham, making it the perfect addition to your trip to the campus.

Relax at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science

This indoor/outdoor children's discovery museum is appropriate for toddlers as well as teens. Highlights of the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science include the butterfly house, the train ride (for younger children), the native animal habitats of wolves and bears, the dinosaur trails, and the outdoor play areas. The museum also hosts successive hands-on exhibits and special programs throughout the year.

Explore the Shops at the American Tobacco Campus

The American Tobacco Campus is adjacent to the Durham Bulls baseball park and the Durham Performing Arts Center and is also home to five restaurants. The Campus is a registered historic site and makes use of the original American Tobacco Factory built in the 1800s, but the addition of modern buildings has transformed it into a mixed-use development. The area is constantly adding retail and office space and eventually will include 380 residential units as well. The beautifully-landscaped public space is the site of a popular summer music series.

Escape to Nature at Jordan Lake

Located west of Raleigh and south of Chapel Hill and Durham, Jordan Lake is a North Carolina Recreation Area that's one of the largest summertime homes of the bald eagle, the symbol of the United States for more than 200 years. Vast, undisturbed areas provide the perfect home for the bald eagle; there's plenty of fish to eat and a mature forest for roosting. Jordan Lake offers multiple swim and camping areas, and there are limited boat rentals available from Crosswinds Marina.

Take a Hike Through Eno River State Park

For hikers, the 24 miles of trails around the Eno River offer some of the most scenic walks in the area. The Bobbitt Hole Trail is a favorite, leading to a lush spot where water rushes over rocks in the spring, summer, and fall. All trails are blazed and signed, but you can request a park trail map for descriptions and distances at the Park Ranger station or online.

Dribble Over to the Carolina Basketball Museum

For all the Carolina basketball fans out there, there's no greater destination than the Basketball Museum. Located in the Dean E. Smith Center on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, the museum features artifacts, videos, photos, plus statistical and historical panels that highlight the history of the Carolina Basketball program. The museum includes video tributes to coaches and players as well as interactive presentations highlighting Carolina's 18 Final Four appearances and 17 ACC tournament championships. The museum is open to the general public Tuesday to Saturday, and admission is free.

Take a Walk Down Franklin Street

A number of years ago, Sports Illustrated called Chapel Hill the "Best College Town in America." One of the reasons is that the campus seamlessly flows into East Franklin Street, blurring the lines between school and city. Walk down Franklin Street, and you can peruse the shops or grab a cup of coffee at a local cafe. When the stars come out, this part of town becomes the center of campus nightlife. If you come on a football weekend or basketball game day, you'll be caught up in a swarm of Carolina Blue and highly contagious Tar Heel fever.

Stay Out Late on First Fridays in Raleigh

First Friday is a year-round Raleigh tradition. On the first Friday of each month, museums, art studios, and shops offer extended hours, and all the participating restaurants offer specials. Many of the art venues have live music and the museums host special programming. Look for the First Friday Flags to easily locate participating venues, and a free detailed map and guide will be available at each location.

Things to Do in The Triangle (A North Carolina Guide!)

North Carolina is a popular destination for its plentiful outdoor activities, vibrant cities , and delectable craft beer scene .

The North Carolina Triangle is less well-known as a primo North Carolina destination. Now that I’ve been there to check it out for myself, I urge you not to ignore this part of the state.

I’m going to take you on a journey of the best things to do in The Triangle and the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill of it all. There will be much eating, of course.

What are the three cities in The Triangle?

The three cities in The Triangle are Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. You can drive through all three in a little over an hour, so they’re easy to combine on travel in the area.

What is The Triangle known for?

The Triangle is known for its research universities: North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

There are a lot of big brains in that neck of the woods. When you hear about Research Triangle Park, the reference is to the largest research park in the United States, set in the center of the triad. 

The park’s 7,000 acres house hundreds of tech firms, startups, and government agencies. That makes this part of North Carolina a hot real estate market and invaluable to the state economy.

Fun fact: Some definitions of the Research Triangle ‘s statistical area are broader and include any major research institutions within Wake County and Orange County. That would include Wake Forest University and surrounding towns like Holly Springs, Fuquay-Varina, and Cary.

What are the best things to do in The Triangle?

The best things to do in The Triangle are walking the three campuses and visiting the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. Eating at the best restaurants in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill is also pretty great.

Things to do in raleigh.

Raleigh is likely where you’ll fly into if you’re targeting the North Carolina Triangle, and was my favorite of the three if that means anything to you.

It offers more than enough to fill a full day’s worth of fun in your North Carolina triad exploring. If you’re able to extend your trip to include more time in Raleigh, I support that. Otherwise, a return trip is always an option.

Have breakfast at Big Ed’s.

Kick things off aggressively with breakfast at Big Ed’s . Weekends get busy here, but if you’re traveling on a weekday, you’ll likely be able to walk right in and roll yourself out.

By that I mean these plates are hearty. It was at Big Ed’s where I observed a gentleman pouring molasses all over his plate of food, which included eggs, bacon, and pancakes.

I wasn’t joking about kicking things off aggressively.

Note: No, pours of molasses aren’t any healthier than straight up sugar. Yes, you should indulge in moderation if you want to sweeten things up. You can also just eat savory dishes as they’re meant to be eaten…since they are savory.

There are a few locations to choose from. We went to Big Ed’s North, but if you choose Big Ed’s City Market, you’ll be well situated for exploring downtown Raleigh after.

Stroll the historic City Market.

Stroll around the City Market area of Raleigh and walk off that molasses.

Find your favorite boutique along the cobblestone paths here and see why this part of town is on the National Register of Historic Places. Visit Moore Square, a lovely four-acre public park and host to many local events.

If you started your day in a lighter fashion, you’ll be near Brewery Bhavana , a place that is anything but just a brewery . Think brewery plus dim sum restaurant, and then add a book and flower shop.

This place is busy no matter when you go, so if you’re looking to eat, get reservations. They’re available online. 

If you’re lucky enough to visit Raleigh Thursday-Saturday, check out the weekly farmers market in the City Market area for some fresh produce.

Visit the North Carolina State Capitol Building.

A short walk from Moore Square will get you to the North Carolina State Capitol Building.

Fun fact: If you didn’t know then, you know now. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina. You’re welcome.

The Greek Revival-style building was completed in 1840. If you’re invested in legislative furniture, you can take yourself on a self-guided tour of the historic site. Free tours are only available on weekdays. 

We liked seeing lit up at night, too, so it’s one of the best things to do in The Triangle at night, too.

Tour the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

If you’re not hungry again just yet, spend some time at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences , the largest of its kind in the United States.

While there, you’ll be able to take a deep dive into coastal North Carolina at the Nature Exploration Center.

This is a Central American tropical dry forest complete with butterflies, turtles, and tarantulas in the Living Conservancy. Special exhibitions have included carnivorous plants and a spotlight on female scientists.

General admission is free, and I like free things.

Choose from Raleigh’s best lunch options.

If you’re up for some fried chicken, Beasley’s Chicken + Honey is the spot. It’s run by local restaurateur Ashley Christensen who appears elsewhere on this list as well.  It’s a good option for brunch or lunch, too.

As long as you aren’t visiting on a Monday, the Whisky Kitchen is a hearty lunch spot for Southern-inspired fare. Think elevated cornbread, buttermilk biscuits, and barbecue platters.

They aren’t strict on reservations but they are available online if you’re here on weekends.

For more variety than anyone would need, head to the Morgan Street Food Hall . Don’t be offensive and call this place a food court. It’s a dining experience, you guys.

Tour the Pope House Museum.

This modest museum is dedicated to the life and accomplishments of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope.

Pope was a Black doctor and community leader in Raleigh throughout the early part of the 20th century.

The home was occupied until 2000 when it was restored to showcase artifacts and photographs from Pope’s time as a physician, military officer, and political leader.

Admission to the museum is free. Call ahead for guided tours or visit during Black History Month when tours are more free and more frequent.

Looking for free things to do in The Triangle? Quite the pleasant surprise, The North Carolina Museum of Art is a must for any art buffs.

You’ll find the largest collection of Renoir sculptures in the United States here, along with a series of Rembrandt copper etchings and interactive exhibits.

The best part is that the permanent collection is free to see, although you may need to pay a fee for specific exhibitions.

Walk around North Carolina State University.

You’re not seeking out frat houses on your visit here, but key sites. Head to the Memorial Belltower first, a symbol of those lost in military service.

If you’re a big fan of Bull Durham , head over to Mitch’s Tavern afterward. Scenes from the movie were filmed in the old-school bar, which makes this one of the more unique things to do in The Triangle.

See the mill at Historic Yates Mill County Park.

This 174-acre park is a popular spot for hiking and fishing, but on a quick trip here, you’ll want to start at the mill.

Yates Mill was one of 70 water-powered gristmills in Wake County that supported the area’s corn and wheat operations. It worked within that capacity for over 200 years.

While it’s no longer needed for that function, it’s been fully restored to operate as such if it ever needs to be called back into duty.

It’s the only one in the county that still works, actually, so it’s got that claim to fame at least. It’s also scenic as heck beyond those sustainable travel accolades.

Hike at William B. Umstead State Park.

Just 10 miles from downtown Raleigh, this state park is a beauty and a welcome respite for outdoor enthusiasts in The Triangle.

Explore walking trails like the 0.4-mile Inspiration Trail Loop or choose more challenging hikes to get your workouts back on track.

Sal’s Branch Trail is a moderate 2.8-mile loop open only to hikers. The Reedy Creek Multiuse Trail is 3.7 miles one way, but you’ll need to share the path with bikers and, potentially, horses.

In the summer months, the park is popular for paddling, fishing, and picnicking at Big Lake. That’s just what they call it. I’d say it’s more moderately sized.

Indulge in Raleigh’s diverse eateries for dinner.

Raleigh has become quite the foodie destination, with big names in the restaurant world calling this North Carolina city home.

If you’ve heard of Pho Nomenal Dumplings, the winner of Season 6 of the Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race , you’re cooler than I am.

You’ll also want to head straight to MOFU Shoppe .

Order the delightful pork and chive dumplings or get playful with their version featuring Impossible “meat.” Their dan dan noodles wouldn’t be a mistake either. Reservations are available online via OpenTable.

If you’re seeking out local James Beard award winners and celebrity chefs, head to Poole’s Diner . The eatery is run by the aforementioned Christensen, the restaurateur of five different spots throughout the state. 

Note: That includes Beasley’s, the fried chicken place I mentioned already as one of the best places to eat in The Triangle.

The mac ‘n cheese is legendary, but there aren’t any bad moves to be made at Poole’s Diner.

Things to Do in Durham

Durham, North Carolina, has some surprisingly scenic spots to explore if you know where to look. That includes the gardens in that one university people love to hate…or love to love if they’re alums.

Treat yourself to sweet (or savory) treats for breakfast.

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast so you can hang with the coeds the rest of the day.

If you’re all, “But where are the best shrimp ‘n grits in town?” as I sometimes am, head to Beyú Caffè . The shrimp here come jumbo, as do the flavors on their other menu items, like glazed sweet rolls.

Guglhupf, a German bakery, cafe, and beer garden may be difficult to pronounce, but that doesn’t make it any less of another essential breakfast stop in these parts.

Try any of their delectable pastries to start your day, or line your belly with their morning goulash. That’s a blanket of poached eggs and hollandaise over veggies.

Walk the Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

Duke University is admittedly a lovely campus , in part thanks to the gardens here. This is one of the best Durham attractions for sure, and where we spent the most time on our day in the Raleigh-Durham area.

Stroll amongst the magnolias at Duke’s gardens and take a beat in the gazebos, perhaps wondering where all of the Solo cups went.

The grounds are open from 8am to dusk daily. There is no admission fee, but you will have to pay for parking when you get there.

Explore the rest of Duke University.

Spend some additional time checking out the rest of Duke’s campus. Enjoy its impressive architecture in both campus buildings and residential homes nearby, and its vast network of offerings no matter what you’re interested in

That includes performing arts spaces and wildlife encounters.

To take a walk on the wild side, consider booking a tour time at the Duke Lemur Center . It’s a conservation site that also partners with many groups in the animals’ native Madagascar.

You can only visit with a reservation, though, so plan ahead and edit your itinerary as needed if you’re interested in meeting some lemurs. We missed out on this one because I didn’t take that advice. Be better.

Art lovers won’t want to miss the Nasher Museum of Art , a collection of more than 13,000 pieces. Pre-Columbian art is a specialty here.

Walk the American Tobacco Campus.

If you spent some time on Duke-adjacent activities this morning, you may be hungry by now. M Kokko will take care of that.

The downtown Durham eatery is focused on the chicken, and you’ll know you’re there by the sign that features an outline of a chicken out front.

This place is small, but special.

Since you’re here for chicken (I assume), go with the Korean fried chicken wings.

This spot gets busy, but you’ll have to wait your turn. There are no reservations.

You’ll be near the American Tobacco Campus from here. The registered historic site is a mixed-use development project that includes sites of historical value. See the original 1800s-era American Tobacco Factory alongside modern retail and new construction.

Stroll the campus and pop into any of the shops or eateries that interest you.

We found a cocktail bar that made a pretty disastrous old-fashioned here, but it’s since closed down so I don’t need to caution you against anything on the campus.

Hike in Eno River State Park.

Work off some of that lunch on some of the 24 miles of trails around the Eno River.

The Bobbitt Hole Trail is just over a mile-and-a-half that follows a loop upriver. The Cole Mill Trail is just one mile, but it takes you from the river through the upland forest.

Are you interested in something longer?

The 3.75-mile Cox Mountain Trail will have you crossing over the river on a suspension bridge with about 270 feet of elevation gain over the course of your trek.

You’ve earned a trip to Fullsteam Brewery , known for mixing Southern-inspired ingredients into their brews. The pub has its own food menu, too.

Try their pimento cheese if you need a snack ahead of dinner, or just have your dinner here if you’re stuck watching some important sporting event.

My fondest memory here is of Brian lamenting that he had nowhere to watch the Masters Tournament. That’s until a screen was magically pulled down at the brewery to reveal the golf event for his viewing pleasure.

Nosh at the best Durham restaurants.

If you didn’t have your fill at Fullsteam, you’ve got options.

If you’re traveling in a couple or small group with friends who love to share, head to Mateo for tapas. Just make sure to order two of the papas. You won’t regret it.

Reservations are recommended and available online.

For the town’s most beloved Chinese food and possibly the best handmade dumplings you’ll get in the region, head to Sister Liu’s Kitchen .

Get some scoops at The Parlour.

If you’ve saved room for dessert, head over to The Parlour for craft ice cream. Flavors are seasonal but expect things like Vietnamese coffee and hints of rosewater with your fruity samples.

Sometimes the focus is soft serve, though. There are no losers here.

Things to Do in Chapel Hill

We spent the least amount of time in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but not due to any fault of the town. It’s just how much time we had left to create memories in the region.

It was a lovely time nonetheless, and well worth a stop on your tour of the Research Triangle.

Start with breakfast in Chapel Hill.

Breadmen’s is a diner-style favorite with all of the hash, pancake, and waffle plates you can handle. If you see “Breadman’s” on your maps, by the way, that’s the same spot. They go by either name for grammar’s sake, maybe.

The Carolina Coffee Shop is also a no-brainer on most Chapel Hill itineraries.

Of the three institutions of higher learning, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is extra impressive as the oldest state university in the country.

Start your campus tour at the Old Well, which holds magical water that gives all who drink from it good luck.

I wouldn’t know. I didn’t do it. I just looked with my eyes.

Head south to the North Carolina Botanical Garden  next, a conservation garden operated by the college. If you’re looking to work off your breakfast, there are 88 acres of forest behind the gardens for you to explore along the Piedmont Nature Trails.

Three miles of trails there will take you through excellent wildlife and wildflower-spotting opportunities.

Check out the art at the Ackland Art Museum.

If you have the time, the university’s art museum is worth a stop for art lovers. Rotating exhibitions are often focused on current events.

The permanent collection includes works from the greats, including Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali.

Enjoy lunch at Chapel Hill’s casual eateries.

If you ended up on the trails near the botanical garden, you’ve likely worked up an appetite. Luckily, Chapel Hill has a delectable food scene.

If you’re very hungry, The Pig will fix that for you. Their specialty is whole-hog barbecue, so expect your lunch to be heavy on the pork.

I can never get away from ordering pulled pork on any menu, but their Vietnamese pork cheek also sounded intriguing.

If Southern homestyle cooking is what you’re after, head to Mama Dip’s Kitchen for platters of fried chicken and veggie casseroles.

Learn about hoops at the Carolina Basketball Museum.

If you’re a collegiate sports fan, throw in a stop at the Carolina Basketball Museum .

No matter where your allegiances are, it’s hard not to be impressed by the history of the Carolina basketball program…I guess.

Michael Jordan is the sole purpose I’m including this here. (He played three seasons with the North Carolina Tar Heels. ) I’m a Chicago native and he’s the only basketball player that matters in my eyes.

Don’t test me on this. He is first-class.

The museum is located on the ground floor of the Ernie Williamson Athletics Center. It’s free to take a look.

Take a mural walk.

Chapel Hill and neighboring Carrboro have over 30 murals for visitors to find and photograph themselves in front of.

It can be hard to locate one over another, as the murals are often painted over depending on the news of the day, political actions, and artistic inspiration at the time.

That only makes a mural walk of your own making that much more exciting.

If you’re not sure where to start, the ever-popular Chapel Hill postcard mural will likely always be around. Find it at He’s Not Here, a college bar that I can’t vouch for.

Enjoy teatime at Honeysuckle Tea House.

I’m usually all for a pre-dinner drink, and that includes a delicious tea.

The Honeysuckle Tea House is an airy respite from all of the college-aged shenanigans you’ve hopefully avoided over the last few days.

Try a variety of soothing teas with or without caffeine — doesn’t spiced anise just seem heavenly? — or a draft mead if you’re feeling saucy. Fine. There is alcohol here, too.

Taste-test Chapel Hill’s best restaurants.

If you’re hopped up on mead, you may get hungry at some point. You may also get hungry at some point because that’s what happens when you’re hitting the pavement in a touristic fashion.

Head over to Lantern for the best of Chapel Hill. This spot is Asian fusion done right, with locally sourced ingredients in everything from their crispy egg rolls to the plum sorbet.

If you’re disappointed in the lack of pizza in this guide, I’ve got you. Nearby Carrboro has the stuff at Pizzeria Mercato .

Neapolitan style is their thing here. Meat lovers won’t want to miss the Calabrian sausage.

Where to Stay Near The Triangle

Raleigh is the most common pick for budget-friendly options when you’re seeking accommodations around the North Carolina Triangle. Since the three are so close, it’s a great base for travel in the area.

We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott in Raleigh. I’d highly recommend it. The rooms were modern, the location was great, and the price was right.

Is Charlotte or Raleigh better to visit?

Charlotte is better to visit if you want more to do and as a base for Charlotte day trips , but Raleigh is worth the trip as the main town in The Triangle.

I found all three in the tri-city area to be worth the trip. These are smaller, charming North Carolina towns with great food, live music, and opportunities to hang out in nature. Since they’re college towns, they’re cultural hubs in the state, too.

Ready for Things to Do in the Triangle, NC?

Your Flight:  I use a variety of tools to find cheap airfare, but if you’re looking to book during a particular period of time, especially during busy times (e.g. school breaks), you should use  Skyscanner .

For the best chance at budget-friendly flights, target Raleigh as your airport of choice. You’ll want a car from wherever you land to explore the region, especially if you’re on a road trip through the South.

This guide will help you determine the best things to do in North Carolina’s Research Triangle. 

What is the North Carolina Research Triangle?

In the heart of North Carolina’s Piedmont region, or what is roughly the middle third of the state, lies a metropolitan region comprising Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, NC. These cities are anchored by three top-rated universities: North Carolina State University, Duke University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, all which are about a half an hour away from each other. In addition to the research and learning that occurs throughout the three campuses, many tech and life-science companies have headquarters in the Triangle and work in conjunction with the universities to support each other’s projects . As a result, the name “Research Triangle” has been given to this area that includes the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

With over 2 million people living and working in the Research Triangle, NC, it can be nearly impossible to figure out all the best things to do in Raleigh and which Durham attractions to visit. Read on for our tips and suggestions for making the most of a North Carolina long weekend!

Things to do in Raleigh, North Carolina

As the biggest of the three cities in the Research Triangle and the capital of North Carolina, Raleigh has a vibrant commercial downtown surrounded by dozens of residential neighborhoods, and frequently ranks as one of the best cities to live in the United States. 

Discover the best bites at Transfer Co. Food Hall

Is it time for lunch but everyone in your group has a taste for something different? Luckily, the Transfer Co. Food Hall in downtown Raleigh has so many options that even the pickiest eater will leave with a full stomach. You can’t go wrong with any of the food stalls, but for a sustainable meal head to Alimentari at Left Bank which serves Italian specialties and sources their heritage-bred meat from two local farms that utilize restorative land management techniques. Or, grab a snack at Locals Oyster Bar – they make multiple visits to North Carolina coastal fishing boats each week to ensure their handpicked seafood is as fresh and locally sourced as possible. 

Engage your inner mixologist at The Bittery

You’ve sampled the wine flights, you’ve done the beer tasting, and you’ve even lived out your Cocktail fantasies with a shaker in one hand and a glass in the other. Is there anything left in the world of craft beverages? How about a Bitters Class! Bitters are a key component in most mixed drinks. They are infused spirits that add just the right dash of flavor to your beverage. But to really learn how best to incorporate bitters into your mixology, head to The Bittery where you can learn the history of the spirit and try your hand at pairing from their unique line. It’s one of the most fun things to do in Raleigh, NC, and with flavors like Earl Grey, Scorched Pear, Matcha, Smoke Salt, and Black Walnut, no two drinks will be alike!

Bike along the Neuse River Greenway Trail

Discover nearly 30 uninterrupted miles of paved trail that parallels the Neuse River and winds through the picturesque wetlands and agricultural fields of southeastern Raleigh. The tree-lined Neuse River Greenway Trail crosses over two suspension bridges and is mostly flat and easy – no endurance training is required for this ride, making it a perfect Raleigh weekend activity. Fun fact: this path is part of the larger East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile route that passes through 15 U.S. states!

Need some wheels for your ride? Cardinal is Raleigh’s bikeshare program and offers both single-ride and two-hour passes. Stop by one of over a dozen docking stations located throughout the city and hit the trails! If you’re traveling by bus, OMIO is a great choice to make your connections.

Go hiking in Umstead State Park

If you’ve got some time to kill before your flight home, you’ll want to stop at Umstead State Park , one of the best free things to do in Raleigh, NC. It’s located right next to Raleigh-Durham International Airport, but with 5,600 acres of quiet wooded wilderness, you’ll quickly realize you’re in the middle of a rural oasis. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails spread throughout the park, but we suggest Sal’s Branch Trail, a moderate 2.8-mile hike that offers wonderful views of the park’s Big Lake. As you stroll through the towering beech trees, keep an eye out for glimpses of local wildlife – beavers, racoons, deer, belted kingfishers, and great blue herons are commonly spotted along the trails. 

Step back in time at the Historic Yates Mill

Just south of Raleigh lies Historic Yates Mill County Park , home to a fully restored 18th-century gristmill and the last water-powered mill in the county. The park is also a wildlife refuge and environmental research center that aims to preserve one of the last Piedmont Prairie Gardens in North Carolina, an endangered ecosystem that once grew extensively throughout the state. Choose one of the hiking trails that leads through wetlands and quiet hardwood forests, and if you’re traveling with little ones in tow and looking for family fun in Raleigh, NC, stick around for a guided tour of the mill which comes with a real life corn-grinding demonstration!

Things to do in Durham, North Carolina

Durham was a key player in the tobacco industry for over a century and while tobacco use is now looked upon less favorably than it once was, the city still retains much of its industrial spirit and aesthetic. Durham is a diverse city with a gritty and artistic vibe, and often tops the list of best food cities in the country. And if you’re wondering if this is the same Durham from the movie Bull Durham, it most certainly is! The city’s Durham Bulls minor league baseball team was named after the Bull Durham smoking tobacco mascot.

Explore the campus at Duke University

Located in the heart of Durham, Duke University is one of the country’s top colleges. Most people head straight to the stadium to cheer on the famous Blue Devils basketball team, but there are two other places you should put on your radar when visiting Duke. The Sarah P. Duke Gardens offer 55 acres of peaceful gardens in the middle of the bustling campus and is one of the top Durham, NC attractions. Relax underneath a wisteria-covered pergola, discover 900 species and varieties of regional native plants, and stop and smell the heirloom roses that surround the historic Roney Fountain.

And for your daily dose of adorable animals, visit the Duke Lemur Center , which houses the world’s largest and most diverse population of lemurs outside their native Madagascar. Lemurs are the most endangered group of mammals on Earth, and Duke’s non-invasive research and conservation breeding program has helped preserve and protect this vanishing species. Over 200 lemurs live at the Center, and you can meet many of them on a guided tour of the facility or at the annual Lemurpalooza, which wins our prize for the best-named animal festival. 

Taste authentic North Carolina BBQ

Trying some North Carolina-style barbecue is one of the best things to do in Durham. Made with a vinegar base, this tangy, peppery sauce is also referred to as Eastern-style and notably does not contain any ketchup or tomato products. Whether you pour it on a whole rack of ribs, slather it over a pile of pulled pork, or simply eat it with a spoon (we won’t tell), you haven’t truly experienced the best of North Carolina until you’ve sampled its sauce. 

Not into meat? No problem! Durham’s Pure Soul serves up authentic southern comfort food that just so happens to also be fully vegan. Their *BBQ* is made from locally grown soybeans that are textured, seasoned, and sauced to plant-based perfection. 

Sip a Sustainable Craft Brew

With dozens of local breweries, Durham is quickly becoming one of the best cities in the country for craft beverages. You can’t go wrong with asking for a taste of experimental beers like Gizmo BrewWorks ’ Damn Right Strawberry Milkshake IPA, a Lemon Ginger Wit from Ponysaurus Brewing Co ., or the Glass Jug Beer Lab ’s Donut Touch My Coffee Blonde Ale. 

If you’re looking for a sustainable sip, mission-driven Fullsteam Brewery celebrates the farm and food traditions of the American South by patronizing regional suppliers from plow to pint and encourages entrepreneurship within the post-tobacco South. Also, Bull City Burger & Brewery serves pasture-raised beef and repurposes spent brewers grain into delicious dog treats for your beloved pup!

Paddle the rapids in Eno River State Park

You might not think of Durham as a city with outdoor adventure activities, but that means you haven’t heard of Eno River State Park . Located just ten miles northwest of downtown Durham, the park boasts over 4,000 acres of protected natural area, unspoiled wildlife habitats, and some of the cleanest water in the county. Hike along 28 miles of river bluff trails, pitch a tent for some epic backcountry camping, and when the water’s right, tackle the river’s Class I, II, and III rapids. And if you’re looking for one of the most fun things to do in Durham, follow the Eno all the way to its headwaters in Falls Lake and take this guided excursion where three rivers converge to form the Neuse River. 

Things to do in Chapel Hill, NC

Of all three cities in the Research Triangle, Chapel Hill has the most “college-town” feel. It’s also the smallest of the three and where you’ll find a charming downtown, quiet residential neighborhoods, and one of the best public school systems in the country. 

Explore the campus at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

You probably know it as the school where Michael Jordan learned to shoot. But there’s more to UNC-Chapel Hill than their winning Tar Heels. Alongside rotating exhibitions, Ackland Art Museum ’s permanent collection of over 20,000 works includes 8th-century pottery, 17th-century still lifes, and 21st-century sculptural installations, making it one of North Carolina’s most important art museums and a top Chapel Hill attraction. If you prefer to turn your eyes to the skies, visit the historic Morehead Planetarium and Science Center , the first and largest full dome planetarium in the South and the training ground of dozens of astronauts who developed the country’s space program. Explore the constellations from underneath a full dome star show, watch live science demonstrations, and hear what current research is taking place in Morehead’s Breakthrough Hub. 

Finally, catch a breath of fresh air at the North Carolina Botanical Garden , stretching across one thousand acres of cultivated landscapes and wild forests. Explore a centuries-old stone amphitheater, wind through an old-growth forest on nature trails dotted with wildflowers, and try to spot a Carolina Chickadee in the Mason Farm Biological Reserve, a much-loved birding hotspot and one of the best places to go in Chapel Hill. 

Other places to visit in North Carolina

North Carolina is a big, beautiful, and scenically diverse state that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Appalachian Mountains. You could spend a lifetime exploring all that the Tar Heel State has to offer and still not see everything, but put these locations on your radar if you’re looking for other places to go in North Carolina.

• Outer Banks – go for wild beaches, towering sand dunes, protective lighthouses, and steady sea breezes.
• Bald Head Island – go between July and November to witness the annual hatching of endangered loggerhead sea turtles. 
• Asheville – go for stately homes, fresh mountain air, chill artsy vibes, and a startling amount of craft beverage options. 
• Blue Ridge Parkway – this one’s a road, not a specific location, but it’s considered America’s Favorite Drive and offers stunning overlooks, quiet mountain towns, and one heart-stopping swing bridge. Be sure to stop in Boone, a local favorite and home to some of the best bluegrass music in the country.
• Mount Airy – invite your mom and go for some serious retro fun – this is the real-life town that served as the basis for Mayberry, the fictional town in The Andy Griffith Show.

Seeing the Autumn leaves change colors is definitely an item on many people’s bucket list. But most people think they have to either go driving in New England or sit on the porch of a luxury hotel in Gatlinburg . Howeveer, there is just something about walking on a picture-perfect fall day around the Triangle of North Carolina. With variations of gold, red, and orange engulfing the area, you will be truly amazed. So, if this is on your bucket list, you will definitely want to head to the Triangle no earlier than mid-October.

• North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festival – Since 1995, the second largest gay, lesbian and transgender film festival in the Southeast, has featured an array of shorts, documentaries and feature films every August.
• Nevermore Film Festival – This film competition festival every February showcases more than 500 features and shorts from around the world. The festival highlights horror, science fiction, dark fantasy, animation, mystery/suspense, and action-thrillers films.
• Full Frame Documentary Film Festival – This annual international festival is dedicated to the theatrical exhibition of nonfiction cinema. For four days every April, they showcase nearly 100 films in historic downtown Durham, North Carolina.

I didn’t associate the triangle area with film festivals. I’m a lifelong northeasterner and have seen many of my fellow yanks make the move down south!

When you said it had great beer and lots of awesome basketball, I thought “sold”, where I do I sign up. The Triangle looks like a fantastic place to raise a family and also, to enjoy the outdoors.

I would so love to experience that free fall at the zip line. Also those fall colours! And seems like a picturesque destination for hiking too. The Triangle packs in quite the punch !

North Carolina is one state I’ve yet to visit when in the US, but one I’d really like to visit. I never knew about the film festivals you have there, that’s pretty cool! The outdoors looks fantastic, and those colors are mesmerizing!

My favourite time of the year is autumn so sign me up for the autumn leave change photography! Definitely sounds like my husband and I would enjoy NC as I am into photography and the outdoors and he is into outdoors and film festivals. A place that would indulge both our interests.

From all the list of things to do in Triangle North Carolina, I guess the first thing I would do is to visit the Basketball Museum. I’m a big fan of this! then that season change would be nice to watch. Great list indeed!

I’ve never actually heard of The Triangle before. I have always heard such nice things about North Carolina and have always intended to visit eventually. Looks like I’ve got a new area to add to my itinerary!

It’s hard to believe North Carolina, home of the transgender bathroom case, also hosts the largest LGB film festival. Then again, I have always heard that life inside the Triangle is different from other parts of the state. It’s amazing how a dense population of multinational research campuses can tend to liberalize a culture. Now that we’re living on the East Coast, we’ll need to head up to NC and check it all out.

This place is great because it has amazing outdoor activities and the beautiful maple trees. it has a perfect combination of nature tripping and sporty surrounding. My husband will really enjoy that zipline and the basketball games.

I didn’t know North Carolina was so cool! I love beer so I definitely need to check Carolina Brewery… 100 awards for brewing excellency… it must be something amazing! And zip lining must also be lots of adrenaline!

• Tonight! Durham Mardi Gras 2023!!!

The weather is just perfect for the Durham Mardi Gras celebration TONIGHT in the Bull City! The fun starts with a min-parade at 6:30pm lead by the Bulltown Strutters from “the “Major” Bull in CCB plaza. Be sure to get there a little early to see all the krewes decked out in their Mardi Gras flare and listen to local musican jam. The crowd will then stroll down to Motorco to kickoff a family friendly evening of live music starting at 7pm. Multiple bands will be playing at three different locations all within walking distance of each other (The Blue Note Grill, Motorco, and The Pit). • “Come From Away” – Shines Brighter Than Ever at DPAC!

This is the second time I have seen Come From Away , and it remains one of the best shows I have ever seen. We all have our own story about where we were on September 11, 2001. It is a day none of us will ever forget and for so many it still evokes raw emotions. Even now, more than twenty years later I tend to shy away from movies and stories about that day. I am however drawn to stories that show the good in people and their ability to come together as a community and show the very best of humanity in the face of the worst. That is exactly what the musical Come From Away is all about. This production is a wonderful uplifting performance about the power of community and strength of human spirit. Yes, the backdrop of this story are the attacks, but its focus is on the good born out in response and not the dark.

“Come From Away” is the inspiring story about how a small town in Newfoundland that unexpectedly finds themselves host to over 7,000 stranded airline passengers from 38 planes diverted to their small airport in the wake of the terrorist attacks that day. The musical opens by introducing us to the residents of the small town of Gander played by twelve actors who tirelessly perform nonstop on stage for over an hour and a half with no intermission as they use small wardrobe changes to seamlessly transition from portraying local townsfolk to stranded plane passengers. There isn’t an actor on stage who doesn’t find themselves playing at least three different parts.

Each member of the cast does a beautiful and thoughtful job with each character they play. They capture the anxiety of the plane passengers starving for information as they wait stranded on the tarmac, while also bringing a wit and humor to their roles as residents of Gander as they struggle to deal with the logistical issues that come with the sudden influx of people from around the world in their small town.

The set is minamal with just a few tables and chairs moved around to quickly change scenes between the plane and shelters throughout the town. Set designers make clever us of a rotating stage to create motion and the transition of time as the passengers and locals slowly come to terms with unfolding events as the stranded passengers settle in to the town over five days amid local scrambling for supplies to provide for them and the new arrivals struggle to come to terms with what happened and connect with their loved ones in the United States to let them know they are alright.

A few of the standout performances for me we delivered by Marika Aubrey, who plays Captain Beverly Bass, the first female captain of an American Airlines plane. She has a wonderful solo, “Me and the Sky” that captures her lifelong desire to fly and her dismay at the use of the things she loves as a weapon.  James Kall is delightful as Nick, a Brit who finds himself falling for a fellow passenger named Diane (played by Christine Toy Johnson) from Texas. It isn’t all laughs however as some of the harsh realities of the events that day impact some of the passengers directly. Hannah, played by Danielle K. Thomas reminds brings levity to the story as she anguishes over not being able to reach her son who is a New York firefighter. In the end the passengers and the townspeople all lean on each other to help one another cope with the unfolding events of the day.

I also need to give a quick nod to the amazing musicians in this production. They are on stage hidden behind a few trees on the set, and simply put they are FANTASTIC and bring a special energy to the show. I am so glad they have their moment to shine during at the final curtain!

At its core this show is about how even during the darkest times people will open their hearts and their homes to help strangers in a time of need. You will experience the full range of emotions seeing this production, but I promise you will come out smiling and feeling optimistic about humanity. This show is not to be missed. Truly one of my all-time favorite performances at DPAC.

• Weekend Pick: Under the Silver Moon Lantern Parade in Downtown Cary – Saturday, January 14th

The weather looks perfect for the “ Under the Silver Moon” Lantern Parade in downtown Cary this Saturday, January 14th at 6pm . This event is a collaboration between A River of Light and the Town of Cary as part of their GLOW 2023 outdoor exhibit. Over the past three months internationally-renowned visual teaching-artist Gowri Savoor hosted a series of lantern making workshops for residents to help them create beautiful lanterns. This weekend they will be put to use as the community comes together on a perfect winter evening to parade from the Herbert Community Center to Cary Town Hall (approximately 15 minute walk). The event will include live music from the Bulltown Strutters as well as a drum circle by OneTribe Rythms and fire dancing by Caroleeena’s Circle of Joy .

This event is FREE & family friendly, everyone is welcome (except our furry friends please, they’ll have more fun at home).

Additional Event Details:

– Free parking is available in the multi-story parking garage right opposite the community center.

– Arrive at 6pm and take your place in line, or line the parade route.

– Hot drinks & baked goods will be available for purchase from Buzzy Bakes Bakeshop food truck.

– The event will conclube by 7.30pm at the latest.

– You do not need a lantern to walk in the parade or join in the fun, but if you have a lantern, please bring it along!

• Exploring Pizza – Coronato Pizza in Carrboro is a Must Visit!

I’ve had Coronato Pizza on my list of places to visit since Chef Teddy Diggs launched the Roman-style pizzeria in Carrboro back in 2019. For one reason or another I never made it over there until this past weekend. I am happy to report it was worth the wait and I am already looking forward to going back! Coronato is unique in that they serve up Roman style pizza which uses dough rolled very thin making for a crispy cracker-like crust. I like all kinds of pizza, but this was definitely among the best pizza I have ever had.

Chef Teddy Diggs has an impressive culinary background from his time spent working in highly rated restaurants in Martha’s Vineyard, Washington, D.C. and most recently Chapel Hill. He has also sharpened his skills with several research trips to Italy that inspire his menu at Coronato while also honoring local sources of ingredients whenever possible.

On this first visit we ordered the ‘Americano’ (with pepperoni) and the ‘Roma’ (artichokes and olives) pies and both were outstanding. Normally my wife and I could polish both off between the two of us, but we had a few slices left at the end of our meal because we just had to order a few of the tempting starters off the menu as well.

We started with the pickled seasonal vegetables and truffle fries and I highly recommend them both! I’m not even a big veggie person but those pickled veggies were so tasty. I’ll likely have to get them again on our next visit, but we are also looking forward to ordering the roasted eggplant meatballs. We would have gotten them this time but knew we would be too full to enjoy them properly. Honestly everything on the menu sounded incredible and we are looking forward to trying something new on each future visit.

Coronato also offers a wide selection of enticing non-alcoholic cocktails in addition to Italian wines and beer. We had an excellent Chianti that paired nicely with our meal. There were several mocktails that caught my eye that I hope to try out next time as well. Everything about our first visit to Coronato was excellent, from the delicious food to the attentive service. Eating there was the highlight of an already great weekend and we look forward to going back soon!

Coronato is located just a few minutes outside of downtown Carrboro in the South Green Shopping Center with easy ample parking. • Review: TINA – The Tina Turner Musical Rocks the DPAC!

Tina – The Tina Turner Musical opened at DPAC this past Tuesday to a sold-out audience. The show was fabulous and a wonderful way to start off the new year! This is a high energy production that builds momentum throughout as her life story unfolds and really goes out with a bang in the final act with everyone in the theater on their feet.

The musical chronicles the life of Tina Turner, from her early childhood in Tennessee, to her rocky and abusive relationship with her musical partner and husband Ike Turner. I grew up listening to Turner in he 80’s and 90’s and this production did a fantastic job of following her evolution through musical styles including R&B and pop to her eventual rockstar status as a solo artist. This production also does a great job of using sets, costume design and period fashion to clearly mark the journey through the evolving time periods as it spans several decades of Tina Turner’s life, helping the audience keep track of when things are happening.

The show doesn’t hold back in portraying her personal and professional setbacks but does a good job of balancing the real-life challenges she faced with While the first act focuses on her early years and collaboration with Ike, the second act brings us to more recent history with Tina working as a solo artist, fighting financial and her financial and professional struggles to establish herself separate from Ike. Turner’s life was not easy and was filled with many highs and lows, including navigating an industry that was not always welcoming to people of color or aging female artists. But despite these challenges, Turner’s incredible talent and courage eventually help her take control of her destiny and deliver her to the stardom and recognition she has more than earned.

The role of Tina is shared by Naomi Rodgers and Zurin Villanueva on alternating nights. I’m not sure exactly why that s, but I suspect no mortal human can sustain 8 high-energy performances a week portraying an icon like Tina Turner. On opening night, it was Villanueva’s turn to play the lead role and she did a wonderful job and left everything on stage. Her excellent vocals, dance moves and contagious energy dominated the stage just like Tina would. I particularly enjoyed her rendition “Proud Mary” that brought the house down. Make sure you stick around after the last act. You will be glad you did.

Tina Turner’s talent is second to none and the cast and crew of this production honor her with this incredible show. I would happily see this again and thought it was a terrific way to start off the new year. The production will be at DPAC through this Sunday, January 8th. Catch it while you can! Free fun in the triangle.

These days, families and singles alike are looking for fun things to enjoy in the Triangle that won’t break the bank.  Unfortunately, it’s sometimes difficult to discover what’s out there.  It’s a good thing we’ve already tracked down some great examples of free entertainment just for you!

Do you enjoy walking around the mall but don’t have a lot of dough to blow?  Well, Crabtree Valley Mall has recently introduced live music entertainment every Wednesday on their patio outside of Fleming’s Steakhouse for your enjoyment.  Take a break from the window shopping and enjoy a mix of music with the pleasant weather.

During the summer months, Raleigh hosts  Downtown Live in Moore Square Park.  Downtown Live is a series of free concerts that draws over 70,000 fans every other Saturday.  Featured artists include Filter, Joan Jett and Better than Ezra.

If you’re interested in the museums, art and culture of Raleigh then  visitRaleigh.com has an entire list of Free Things To Do that are great for family day trips or enriching random outings with friends.
