Queen Movie Review

Ultimately, its Kangana Ranaut who makes you root for Rani from the word go. The best way to describe her fabulous performance is by confessing that I forgot I was watching Kangana. Its a raw, nuanced, delicately comical performance, and Bahl rightfully builds his film around his fearless, quirky heroine.Im going with four out of five for Queen. Its an extraordinary journey with a Rani who will stay in your heart.

QUEEN is about a shy and timid girl who travels to Paris and Amsterdam for her honeymoon all alone, when her beau calls off the wedding at the last minute. A quirky concept, yes. But this coming of age story is indeed enjoyable, despite the hiccups. On the whole, QUEEN reinvents the genre with its non-formulaic screenplay and skilled direction. A charming little film, this one’s made with heart and feeling and it shows. Absolutely recommended!

Queen is about the metamorphosis of Rani. Director Vikas Bahl, who has also co-written this delightful story, doesnt expend too much energy on plot. Nothing much happens. Instead he creates moments, which slowly mold and reshape Rani into a woman with a smile and a spine Ultimately Queen is Kanganas triumph. I left the theater thinking about Rani and how the rest of her life would pan out. Its not often you do that with a Bollywood character. Im going with three and a half stars.

On the whole, Kangana Ranauts performance in Queen overpowers the film itself. The film will, therefore, not be able to realise its full potential. It will do ordinary business because in centres other than the big cities, the audience looks for excitement in drama more than performance of the cast. Business in cities will definitely be good despite very poor opening as the word of mouth for Kanganas acting will be supremely positive.
Kangana Ranaut’s performance is outstanding. Whether she’s crestfallen or ecstatic, selling golgappas or naively buying s**-toys, hiding her infatuation for an Italian restaurateur or showing deep dejection about her wimpy beau Vijya (Rajkummar Rao), she’s a class act. Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao lend good support. But this film belongs to its director Vikas Bahl.
This is a story of girl meets girl, and you should know upfront that this is not a love story. Unless, of course, we refer to the relationship between the audience and the protagonist. Because I dare you to watch Queen and not fall in love with the character. Queen is a good entertainer, sure, but, more critically, it is a showcase for an actress poised to reign. This is one of those monumental moments when you feel the movies shift, and nothing remains the same. I’ve seen the future, baby, and it’s Kangana.
Bahls second directorial venture is a delight: his first, Chillar Party, had some spark, but nothing prepared me for this. The story, which could easily have slipped into mush, stays free of drippy sentimentality, barring one or two raised-violin scenes. And Rani is well on her way to learning the meaning of friendship and freedom in a land far away from home, where girls have to live with the word allowed .
This is a film that is no less tangy than the gol gappas that Rajouri Garden girl Rani Mehra rustles up in an Italian pizzeria in faraway Amsterdam. The bright and breezy Queen does not require even €œtwo minutes€ to work its magic. It hits its straps from the very outset. Queen is spicy, balmy and uplifting. Like good gol gappas, it leaves a zesty aftertaste that lingers on until long after the ride has ended. It warms the heart and tickles the funny bone with equal force.
Director Vikas Bahl (Chillar Party) has crafted one of the better coming-of-age tales in recent times. Expanding on the admirable 2014 motto of Women’s Empowerment, Queen’s chief strength lies in its authenticity and littler details, right down to the fading henna patterns on Rani’s hands.Queen almost defies its bloated running time. I say ‘almost’ because one too many moments of enlightenment are piled on towards the end, none of which are surprising. This is instantly forgiven though, as soon as some very innovative end credits begin to roll.

The delightful film tells a simple story: that of a young Indian girl from Rajouri Garden in New Delhi, dumped by her fiance two days before her wedding, who chooses to go on the prebooked honeymoon. And that is the film’s beauty: its pauses, its silences, its not saying too much when it can say less. Cocoon-like, Vikas Bahl allows the woman to emerge from the turmoil, in her own way, on her own terms, and that is uniquely a mastery of his own.

Except that I can see women audience relating more to this. It’s not really a chick flick but yes, the actress is the protagonist here, and those films are ‘generally’ not considered commercially viable. But that is such a small non-problem when this movie gets everything else so right.Queen is irresistible. Highly recommended. A must-see film. You will leave the theatre with your heart humming happily.

There are two or three things that seem to not be in sync with the rest of the films pitch perfect balance. A few times English lines from one character are repeated (read: spoonfed) in Hindi by another character. Strangely there is not one but two endings in the film, and the second one seems shoehorned and unnecessary, because the first one does everything and does so perfectly. But all these are just small complaints, not jarring enough to make one dislike the film. So go watch it.

Have you ever watched a film that has you smile all through its run time, even when a silent tear drops down your face? Queen does that for me. Vikas Bahl eloquently traps the gradual transformation of Ranis middle class terminology into a self assured laconic thank you. It could have been very forgettable and limp but Kanganas poise pulls through the film marvellously. Queen is a winner and does it all in a regal style almost to give most film lovers a cinematic orgasm of sorts. Savor this one!

Queen is a rare Bollywood gem that captivates interest right from the get-go while simultaneously imparting really significant messages.

No modern Bollywood film has encapsulated that feeling of a much-needed breather of fresh air, or resonated as widely and deeply with Indians everywhere quite like Queen.

It is Ranaut's ownership of the character, as well as director Bahl's conscious attempt at a subtle, screwball comedy that makes Queen soar.

Bahl's second directorial venture is a delight: his first, Chillar Party, had some spark, but nothing prepared me for this.
It's Kangana's film from frame one. The way she flits from one aspect of her character to another without breaking stride shows her maturity as an actor.
Queen is spicy, balmy and uplifting.
The first half of the film is especially boring and full of stereotypes.
It is charming and at times unexpectedly moving ...

Movie Review : ‘Queen’
Rarely do Indian filmmakers make women centric films. And even if they do, the depiction doesn’t rise above women as either sympathetic characters or contrastingly, femme fatales. In rarest of rare cases, women are celebrated. Queen is one such rare film. Not only does it celebrates womanhood, but also shows a middle finger to Indian men, most of whom are neck deep in their chauvinistic, domineering spirit towards women.
Profusely entertaining and profoundly meaningful, Queen is coming of age tale of a woman [Rani/Queen] who goes through a journey of self-discovery, self-awakening and most importantly, in the course of that journey, she finds her self-identity. An identity that isn’t dependent on what her to-be husband wants her to do or wishes her to be. That woman, a simpleton middle class girl of Rajauri, is played by Kangana Ranuat in a tour de force performance that exudes warmth, charm and hilarity in equal measures. A performance so richly nuanced that she is pitch-perfect in everything she does; be it in her body language, her accent or even her tiniest expressions. Watch her dance after a drinking binge and you will know what I am talking about. A performance, which is so phenomenally brilliant that it should fetch her National Award for Best Actress (she deserves nothing less).
To regard Queen as just a little comedy would be grossly undermining its nuanced brilliance. Within all its glorious simplicity, lies a incisive, scathing commentary on the mindset of countless Indian men who think their wives to be their property instead of partner. But that’s not all what the film is about. It’s also about friendship, which knows no boundaries and can happen anywhere, with anyone irrespective of the differences we might share. One of the other great aspects of the film that I extremely liked was how subtly it encourages racial equality. But within all the well-intentioned ideas, lies a story full of adventure and compassion that is immensely entertaining to watch.
Fascination and fetish of Indians of grand weddings and honeymoons are well known and that’s what director cleverly utilizes as his premise. An incomplete honeymoon that needs to be completed; with or without the husband. And he couldn’t have chosen two better cities than Paris and Amsterdam. Paris is an epitome of a city where beauty and chaos go hand in hand. Amsterdam, sex capital of the world, serves well for the awakening of Rani, sexual or not, hardly matters.
In the end, Queen is a film that again proves that the first step towards making a great film is to have well-written and refined screenplay. And to top it up, if you have someone giving as good performance as Kangana does in the film, you are in the striking distance of an exceptional film. You only have to give it finishing touches, which in this case, director Vikas Bahl does. And that too, with unparalleled perfection. If at all, I have any qualms with the film, it’s not within the film itself, but rather its title. An english title like “Queen” which hints at royalty doesn’t do justice to a grounded, endearing, very “un-queenly” character like Rani. A minor quibble, I would say, which shouldn’t stop you from watching this true gem of a film.

You enjoy a movie even more if it has the unforeseeable factor adjoined to its premise. Thankfully, a number of storytellers in Bollywood are aiming to surprise, shock and charm you with attention-grabbing yarns you haven't witnessed earlier on the Hindi screen. Some get it right, some don't, but what needs to be lauded is the effort to break the mould, to go beyond the stereotype. Vikas Bahl's QUEEN also dares to push the envelope.
The promos of QUEEN bring back memories of TANU WEDS MANU, partly because the protagonist [Rani] seems like a distant cousin of Tanu. But let's get one thing clear: The presence of Kangna Ranaut and North India setting apart, there's no commonality between TANU WEDS MANU and QUEEN. However, one can draw parallels with ENGLISH VINGLISH, since Shashi in ENGLISH VINGLISH and Rani in QUEEN are vulnerable and low on self-esteem, but eventually find their own voice once they resolve to venture out on their own accord.
QUEEN is about a shy and timid girl who travels to Paris and Amsterdam for her honeymoon all alone, when her beau calls off the wedding at the last minute. A quirky concept, yes. But this coming of age story is indeed enjoyable, despite the hiccups.
First, the premise! Rani [Kangna Ranaut] hails from a Punjabi family in Delhi. She has led a sheltered life, having been surrounded by her over-protective, but caring parents, doting grand-mom and younger brother Chintu. Rani is introduced to Vijay [Rajkummar Rao], the son of their family friend. Vijay is attracted to Rani and woos her relentlessly. Eventually, Rani gives in to Vijay's charms.
Vijay and Rani get engaged. Vijay is posted in London, but when he returns to Delhi for the wedding, he's a changed man. He calls off the wedding at the eleventh hour. Rani is heartbroken, her family is shattered as well. Rani resolves to take charge of her life. She decides to go on her honeymoon to Europe. All by herself...
QUEEN starts off as yet another attempt to encapsulate the middle class Punjabi set-up [based in New Delhi yet again!], replete with resplendent song-and-dance spectacle prior to the wedding, but quickly changes lanes as Rani sets out for Paris. Steering away from the conservative route of the woman wallowing in self-pity, Vikas Bahl tells Rani's story with insight and understanding and along with his team of writers [screenplay: Parveez Shaikh, Chaitally Parmar, Vikas Bahl] injects loads of optimism, besides spirited and lively episodes, to portray Rani's emotional rollercoaster journey.
What really works is the way Vikas presents Rani, his lead character. Rani [in her 20s] is no bimbette or abla naari , is stuck somewhere between tradition and modernity, but has a mind of her own. Her experiences outside the comfort zone [on foreign land], the interaction with varied people she encounters in Paris first and Amsterdam later, the atmospherics... the writers unfurl a tale that's utterly believable, besides creating a colorful canvas that's brimming with characters who are *not* cardboard cut-outs. Sure, a couple of episodes may seem quirky, but gel wonderfully in the scheme of things.
Having said that, QUEEN isn't fool-proof either. The bloated run time -- almost 2.30 hours -- acts as a roadblock. Also, the story stagnates in the second half. Besides, there are too many songs, especially in the first hour. As a result, the film feels elongated and also indulgent at times. Thankfully, the film is back on tracks towards the closing stages, when Rani meets Vijay in Delhi. The final act is indeed brilliant!
There seems to be an overdose of songs [Amit Trivedi] here. 'London Thumakda', 'Hungama' and 'O Gujariya' are effervescent compositions, while a couple of tracks only add to the run time. Cinematography deserves special mention. The DoP [Bobby Singh; additional cinematography: Siddharth Diwan] captures the sights and sounds of Paris and Amsterdam wonderfully. Dialogue [Anvita Dutt; additional dialogue: Kangna Ranaut] come across real.
It's hard to take your eyes off Kangna, who captures the nuances of her character spot-on. She's simply outstanding! Even when the goings-on appear stretched, Kangna doesn't miss a beat. The earnestness and sincerity she invests in her performance is for all to see. Additionally, the deglam look and the attire [jeans, kurtas, sweaters, handbag] makes it so believable. It won't be erroneous to state that she turns Rani into the most real woman you've encountered on the Hindi screen lately. Rajkummar Rao sparkles in a role not many actors would've dared to take up, while Lisa Haydon is simply delightful and supremely confident, complimenting Kangna through and through.
Mish Boyko [as Olik], Jeffrey Ho [as Taka], Guitobh Joseph [as Tim] and Marco Canadea [as Marcello] contribute wonderfully to their respective parts. The actors enacting the part of Kangna's parents, especially the grand-mom, are lovely.
On the whole, QUEEN reinvents the genre with its non-formulaic screenplay and skilled direction. A charming little film, this one's made with heart and feeling and it shows. Absolutely recommended!

My favorite romance movie? The one during which the girl dumps the guy at the end and walks off into the sunset fulfilled with the knowledge that she is enough and doesn’t need a man.
“Queen” is my favorite not-so-typical Bollywood movie. This movie shattered stereotypes and launched a new era in Hindi cinema. Of course, some of the credit for successful women-oriented Hindi films goes to my fav, Priyanka Chopra, for her iconic role in “ Fashion ” (a project of which actress Kangana Ranaut was also a part), but “Queen” was the movie that did extremely well at the box office and put Ranaut on the map. Ranaut has gone on to fearlessly call out nepotism and sexism in the industry ever since.
“Queen” tells the story of Rani, a woman whose fiancé leaves her days before their wedding. Despite her heartbreak, Rani decides to go on her honeymoon alone and ends up on a whirlwind journey of self-discovery and growth. This movie shattered stereotypes about desi women and what the trajectory of our lives should be.
“Queen” is also the least problematic Bollywood movie I’ve ever seen. This in itself is quite an accomplishment, considering the industry we’re talking about. Yet, there were still elements of this movie that bothered me — the tiny details that perpetuate stereotypes despite the fact that the director could have easily made different choices that wouldn’t be harmful.
First, there is a moment in the film when Rani is approached by a stranger who is trying to help her. Rani doesn’t know this and all she sees is a Black man standing near her and she screams in terror. It’s a rational reaction for her to be frightened in the context of the movie, but it was absolutely unnecessary for the director to choose the only Black character in the film to be the one who scares her. The image of Black men in India is permeated with the harmful stereotypes we see in U.S. media and accentuated by the fact that most Indians have never even met a Black person. Furthermore, Tim, the only Black character in the movie, has the least lines and isn’t given a backstory.
The last scenes of the movie are some of the best, especially the combination of the music and aesthetics. However, these are the only scenes of the movie where Rani’s hair is straightened. Throughout most of the film, Rani wears her hair naturally curly, and as a curly-hair girl myself, this is one of the many reasons I loved her character so much. However, the final scenes, when Rani is portrayed as her most badass and confident self, her hair is straight. This sends the subtle message that straight hair is more beautiful and somehow more closely associated with feeling empowered.
The most typical Bollywood element of this movie is the flashback showing how Rani and her fiancé Vijay fell in love — Vijay essentially stalked her until she finally agreed to have dinner with him. This is how most Bollywood movies go — women are pursued until they finally “wear down” and “agree.” In fact, sexual harassment and assault in Bollywood isn’t just limited to what we see on-screen. The industry itself is also rife with instances of well-known actors taking advantage of actresses . “Queen” was refreshing because Rani doesn’t end up with the stalker at the end.
Since I first watched it, “ Queen” has become one of my favorite Bollywood films. Though there are details that I find troubling, the beauty in seeing a main character who is strong in her convictions and unwavered by society’s expectations is hard to measure. A movie like this is rare in mainstream Bollywood, but it’s exactly the kind of high-quality cinema I want to see.

To regard Queen as just a little comedy would be grossly undermining its nuanced brilliance. Within all its glorious simplicity, lies a incisive, scathing commentary on the mindset of countless Indian men who think their wives to be their property instead of partner.
Story: Queen is an ignorant Delhi girl who finds herself on a 'honeymoon' all by herself. What happens along the way forms the crux of this sweet, sensitive, fun social drama.
