An embargo simply means that you ask ProQuest and/or OpenBU to refrain from publishing your work for a specific period of time. This embargo is possible for 2 years, and can be renewed at the end of 2 years.

Note: Most theses and dissertations do not need a publication embargo. However, some authors pursuing publication of their dissertation do request an embargo to prevent their dissertation from being shared online while they seek publication of the revised dissertation as a book.

If you choose to embargo your work, you will need to submit an embargo letter:

  • The embargo letter must be signed by both yourself and your advisor.
  • Both the embargo letter and your ProQuest submission should include matching embargo periods (ie. 6 months, 1 year, 2 years).

Here is a sample embargo letter from BU’s Mugar Memorial Library: http://www.bu.edu/cas/files/2020/03/Embargo-Letter-Template.doc .

Frequently asked questions about embargoes can be found at: https://www.bu.edu/library/files/2011/05/EmbargoesETDFAQ.pdf .

For more information, please contact the STH Library thesis coordinator, Stacey Duran, at  [email protected] .

Viewing Your Published Work

Once your disertation has gone through the upload checklist and been accepted, it will be delivered to ProQuest. If no embargo is applied, the dissertation will be made available in both ProQuest ETD and in the OpenBU repository, usually within 1-2 months.

Dissertation of Martin Luther King, Jr.

April 15, 1955

During his third year of doctoral work at  Boston University , Martin Luther King wrote  Crozer Theological Seminary ’s George  Davis , his former advisor, about his progress in graduate school. He disclosed that he had begun to research his dissertation and that the late Edgar  Brightman , his first mentor at Boston, and his current dissertation advisor, L. Harold  DeWolf , were both “quite impressed” with his course work. “So far, my Dissertation title is: ‘A comparison of the conception of God in the thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.’ I am finding the study quite fascinating. If there are no basic interruptions, I hope to complete it by the end of the coming summer” ( Papers  2:224 ). Davis commended King on selecting “an excellent dissertation topic” and expressed his confidence that King would “do a good piece of work with it” ( Papers  2:225 ).

King passed his final doctoral examination in February 1954, and his dissertation outline was approved by Boston University’s graduate school on 9 April, shortly before he accepted the call to pastor  Dexter Avenue Baptist Church . King’s letter of acceptance to Dexter’s congregation specified that he be “granted an allowance of time to complete my work at Boston University,” though he would be “able to fill the pulpit at least once or twice per month.” He also asked that the church cover his expenses during the completion of his dissertation, “including traveling expenses” ( Papers  2:260 ).

King chose to focus his dissertation research on  Tillich  and Wieman due to their status as influential religious thinkers and as representatives of divergent views on the nature of God. King’s comparison of Tillich’s and Wieman’s concepts of God reflected his adherence to  personalism , which proceeds from the belief that God possesses a personality and can therefore have a relationship with human beings. King’s analysis of Tillich’s and Wieman’s theological concepts as “unsatisfactory” and “inadequate as philosophical and religious world-views” followed from his belief that God was a living force, “responsive to the deepest yearnings of the human heart; this God both evokes and answers prayer” ( Papers  2:532; 533; 512 ). He found that both Wieman and Tillich rejected the conception of a personal God, which resulted in “a rejection of the rationality, goodness, and love of God in the full sense of the words. An impersonal ‘being-itself’ or ‘creative event’ cannot be rational or good, for these attributes are of personality”  ( Papers  2:506 ). In the end, King pointed out the two theologians’ views of God are not “basically sound” because they “render real religious experience impossible” ( Papers  2:532 ).

Recent scholarship by the Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project of the  King Institute  has revealed that as a student at Crozer and Boston, King frequently appropriated the words of other writers without proper attribution. Volumes I and II of  The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr.,  have demonstrated that while his bibliographies contained the authors and books that he drew on in his own compositions, his papers often lacked the footnotes and quotation marks that identified his use of these sources in his text. His habit of plagiarizing others’ work, intentionally or not, can be found in the various drafts of his dissertation. King borrowed from several secondary sources without proper citation, including a dissertation written by fellow Crozer student Jack Boozer for DeWolf three years earlier, and a review of Tillich’s  Systematic Theology  written by one of King’s former professors.

King’s professors did not detect this pattern in his scholarship. After King submitted the first draft of his dissertation, DeWolf filed a report observing that he had sent his specific criticisms, “most of them formal or minor,” to the candidate. DeWolf reminded King to submit an abstract of the dissertation “early” to allow proper time for revision and to clearly set forth his thesis statement ( Papers  2:333 ). That said, DeWolf projected that the finished version would be an “excellent and useful scholarly achievement” ( Papers  2:334 ). S. Paul Schilling, the dissertation’s second reader, approved the draft as well.

King turned in the final version of his dissertation by the 15 April 1955 deadline, returning to Boston for his oral defense. Graduate faculty at Boston University voted to confer the PhD on King in May 1955; however, due to financial difficulties and Coretta Scott  King ’s pregnancy, he was unable to attend graduation.

Smith, Lou Ann, "Let My People Go: A Biblical Theology of Liberation in the Exodus Motif" (2024). Doctoral Dissertations and Projects . 5382. https://digitalcommons.liberty.edu/doctoral/5382

Liberation theologians view political liberation as the central theme of the historical Exodus event due to their interpretation of the text through the perspective of the oppressed and the oppressor. I reject the postmodern stance of liberation theologians, which overemphasizes political liberation and fails to consider the links between Yahweh’s supernatural actions on behalf of the Hebrews in light of Yahweh’s covenantal obligations to Abraham’s descendants. This study argues against the use of liberation theologies as the paradigm for interpreting the historical Exodus event and asserts that a biblical theology of the Exodus motif reveals “covenant” as the interpretive key to understanding the historical Exodus event. I assert that the covenantal nature of the Israelite’s deliverance from Egypt is the basis for elucidating the theological significance of liberation throughout the canon. I contend that the historical Exodus event was built upon the framework of covenant relationship and that deliverance from captivity came about due to the pre-existing Abrahamic covenant. I argue against the contention of liberation theologians that the overarching message of liberation in the biblical text is one of deliverance from political and societal oppression. I assert that the central message of liberation, as demonstrated in the Exodus motif throughout the entirety of the canon, is spiritual and eschatological liberation. This dissertation aims to demonstrate that the Exodus event in the history of the nation of Israel serves a greater purpose than liberation from socio-political oppression. Rather than being a narrative of deliverance from slavery, this epoch-making event in Israel’s history serves as the underlying foundation of God’s salvific plan for all mankind.

Doctoral thesis on diaconal work in in times of new societal challenges.

Lise-Lotte Hellöre.

D.Sc. (Econ. & Bus. Adm.), M.Th.  Lise-Lotte Hellöre’s doctoral thesis in Practical Theology will be put forth for public defence at the Faculty of Arts, Psychology and Theology at Åbo Akademi University.

The thesis is entitled I det fördolda. Om diakoni och värdeskapande i brytningstider.

The public defence of the doctoral thesis takes place on 26 April 2024 at 1.15 PM at Teologiska annexet, Theologicum, Piispankatu 16, Turku. Associate Professor Jakob Egeris Thorsen , Aarhus University, Denmark, will serve as opponent and Professor Cecilia Nahnfeldt , Åbo Akademi University, as custos. You can also follow the defence online.

This study examines how diaconal work in the Porvoo diocese creates value. Special focus is on the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic and on domestic violence. Questions asked are how diaconal workers in the diocese perceive their work, what value it creates and how diaconal work can be developed in times of new societal challenges. Although diaconia is local by characteristic, the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and domestic violence are present across the geographical area.

The research is based on a survey (in 2019) of all diaconal workers in the diocese, of which there are about one hundred, and on 22 interviews (in 2021). This material is analysed partly with perspectives from management and marketing.

Results show that the idea of helping where the need is greatest and where no one else helps is problematic. Diaconia as it is organized today seems to be most suitable for regular challenges in people’s lives, where diaconal workers make a large difference. At the same time, my results show the potential and need for flexibility within diaconal work, also from foremen. This, in turn, can lead to new potential for the deaconry, which the Covid-19 crisis proved. One of these new areas of development, I believe, is in cooperation with shelters for victims of domestic violence. Such cooperation is largely underdeveloped in most of the diocese. The study suggests this would provide great possibility for value creation for society, the individual and the church alike.

Lise-Lotte Hellöre was born in Jakobstad in 1975. She can be reached by email lise-lotte.hellore@abo.fi .

The doctoral thesis can be read online through the Doria publication archive.

BAD FAITH screened at theology conference

A new documentary about Christian nationalism was featured at the Yale Public Theology and Public Policy Conference on Monday.

Students, faculty and religious leaders gathered at the Omni New Haven Hotel on April 8 at 7 p.m. to learn about the dangers of Christian nationalism through a visual medium — film.

The Yale Public Theology and Public Policy Conference took place from April 7 to 9 and was centered around the question, “What Are the Moral & Spiritual Issues Facing Our Democracy in the 2024 Presidential Election?” One such answer came in the form of “BAD FAITH,”  a documentary about the growth of Christian nationalism in the United States. Directed by Stephen Ujlaki and Chris Jones, the film heavily featured the Rev. William Barber, founding director of the Center for Public Theology and Public Policy at the Yale Divinity School.

“We interviewed people who wrote books and conducted extensive research,” Uljak said of the process. “And we also went online and found clips of Christian nationalists and evangelicals and what they were saying.”

Engaging with religious leaders, journalists, legislators and activists, the documentary’s team began piecing together the origins and subsequent spread of Christian nationalism. Uljak said that included insights about the influence of major conservative organizations and their campaign of disinformation.

According to Anne Nelson ’76 — an author, journalist and lecturer at Columbia who specializes in international affairs, media and human rights — the collapse of local newspapers has also contributed to the loss of access to fact-based journalism. Mentioning the takeover of many local television stations by media groups Fox News and Sinclair, she attributed the spread of disingenuous rhetoric to this replacement of regional media organizations with national, agenda-driven outlets.

Nelson is the author of Shadow Network, a book about fundamentalist organizations like the Council for National Policy, but she said film as a medium is particularly effective in articulating the harms of Christian nationalism. Lauding the film’s use of archival footage, she said it was thrilling to see visuals about the topics she has spent so much time researching and delving into. Noting audience reactions to the film, she emphasized that the use of found footage is particularly moving.

“When those scenes show up, it’s almost like they [the viewers] stop breathing,” Nelson said. “That’s the power of documentary.”

The film, which had its theatrical release on March 29 in Los Angeles, has been screened at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and New York’s Cinema Village. With screenings at conferences like this week’s, Ujlaki said he hopes to educate communities across the country about the threat Christian nationalism poses to American democracy.

Both Ujlaki and Nelson expressed their goal of galvanizing young people. Ujlaki teaches at Loyola Marymount University, where he said most of his students are not fully aware of the threat posed by Christian nationalists.

Avery Lenihan ’27, a first-year from Kentucky, said that documentaries like Ujlaki’s are especially important for students at Yale and other elite universities.

“People from the backgrounds that Yale disproportionately draws from can often struggle to understand how deeply woven Christianity is into the fabric of many rural communities,” she said. “Because geographic barriers prevent many from ever visiting these spaces, documentaries serve a key role in bridging the cultural divide.”

Noting that in many regions across the United States, the Church serves as a primary community center, Lenihan added that Christianity is a source of hope for many white Americans who feel economically disenfranchised. Many of the churches they attend are susceptible to exploitation by far-right organizations, which Ujluk said are often targeted by large conservative organizations.

For Nelson, Christian nationalism is dangerous to the freedoms of the American people. Echoing her concerns, Ujlaki urged active engagement from all sectors of society to counter the spread of misinformation and defend the principles of democracy.

“Change depends on journalists and universities to help spread the word about what’s at stake,” he concluded.

“BAD FAITH” will be available for streaming on April 26.

Correction, April 13: A previous version of this article incorrectly spelled director Stephen Ujlaki’s name and gave the wrong graduation year for Avery Lenihan. The article has been corrected with these changes.
