How to write a whole research paper in a week

Writing up a full research article in a single week? Maybe you think that’s impossible. Yet I have done it repeatedly, and so have students in my courses. This is an exceptionally joyful (even if demanding) experience: being so productive just feels great! You are not wasting any time, and a paper produced in one go is typically coherent and nice to read. Even if you are a slow writer, you can write a whole paper in a single week — if you follow my strategy. Read below about what you need to prepare and how to approach this project.

I wrote my first scientific research article in 7 days. It started as a desperate effort to stop my procrastination and “just do it”. But I was surprised what a positive experience it was: focused and efficient, I was making daily progress, feeling motivated and content. Finally, the fruits of my hard work were gaining shape — and they did it so quickly!

I realized it was highly effective to write up a paper like this: writing for the whole day, every day until the first draft was finished. My writing project was firmly present in my mind — I didn’t lose time catching up with what I have written in the last session. Since I was not doing anything else, my wandering mind settled in very fast, and I was getting into a routine. The daily progress was clearly visible and motivated me to continue. And the result was a coherent paper that was easy to revise.

Meanwhile, this paper-a-week approach is my favorite. That’s how I write my papers, and that’s what I teach to students. In on-site courses young scientists draft a whole paper in 5 days, writing one major section per day. At the beginning of the week, many participants have doubts. But at the end of the week, they are all excited to see how much they managed to write in just a single week.

Prepare well

• First, think about your audience and pick a suitable journal . This is an important step because the audience and journal determine the content & style of your paper. As a reference, pick two recent papers on a similar topic published in your target journal.
• Create a storyline for your paper. What is the main message you want to convey, and how are you going to present your results?
• Put together all the results that you need to present your story convincingly: collect the necessary data, finish analyses, and create figures and tables.
• Select and read the relevant background literature as well as studies you want to compare your work with. As you read, note down any point that comes to your mind as something to be mentioned in the Introduction or Discussion section.
• Draft a preliminary Abstract : it will help you keep the direction and not get distracted by secondary ideas as you write the individual sections.

Depending on how complete your results already are, you might need 2-4 weeks to finish all these preparations. Reserve a whole week for writing

Now, writing a paper in a single week is a serious business. You can’t do it if you don’t focus solely on the writing and create good writing conditions. Therefore, I recommend the following settings:

• Find a place where you can write without distractions. I have written my first paper over the Easter holidays when there was nobody in the office. You might choose to write at home or in a library. Though if possible, the best is to go for a retreat: removing yourself from your everyday settings immensely helps focus on the writing.
• Cancel (all) social obligations for the week. While it’s crucial to relax in the evening, you want to avoid disturbances associated with social events. Anything that makes your thoughts drift away from your work because it requires planning, exchanging of messages with others, or simply because it’s too exciting is better left for some other week. On the other hand, a quiet meeting with a good friend over a glass of wine or beer might be just the perfect way to unwind and rest after a productive, yet exhausting day of writing.
• Get support from the partner, family or friends — if possible. It’s best when you don’t need to run errands, cook and clean during this week. If you live alone, you can probably easily arrange yourself for undisturbed work. If you live with other people, ask them for consideration and support.

What I described above are the *ideal* conditions for undisturbed writing. But don’t give up if you can’t create such conditions for yourself. Work with what is possible — maybe it will take you 7-8 instead of 5-6 days but that’s still a great result, right?

Maybe you think that you can never ever draft a research article in a single week. Because you write so slowly, producing only few paragraphs per day. Well — I agree that if you don’t optimize your writing strategy, it would be hard to impossible to write up a whole paper in a week.

• Separate the processes of writing and revising. That’s the most important principle. Resist the urge to revise as you write the first draft. Moreover, don’t interrupt your writing to look up missing information. Work with placeholders instead. This allows you to get into the state of flow and proceed much faster than you can imagine.
• Start your writing day with 10 minutes of freewriting . Write without stopping about anything that comes to your mind. This helps you to warm up for writing, clear your head of any unrelated thoughts, and get into the mood of writing without editing.
• Take regular power breaks. I recommend to follow the Pomodoro technique : write for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. After 3-4 such sessions take a longer break of 0.5-1 hour. During the breaks get up, walk a bit, stretch, look around, and breathe deeply. These breaks help you sustain high focus and productivity throughout the whole day.
• Eat and sleep well. What you are doing is similar to a professional athlete. So take care of your brain and body, and they will serve you well.
• Reward yourself. Every day celebrate the progress you have made. You have full right to be proud of you!

Write the individual sections in a reasonable order

If you have written a research paper before, you have probably realized that starting with the Introduction and finishing with the Discussion is not the ideal order in which to tackle the individual sections. Instead, I recommend the following procedure:

• Start with the Methods section. This is the easiest section to write, so it’s great as a warm-up, to get into writing without the need to think (and procrastinate ;)) too much. Look at your figures and tables: what methods did you use to create them? Then describe your methods, one after another.
• Results section: Writing the Methods section refreshes your memory about the research you have done. So writing the Results section next should not be too hard: Take one display object (figure or table) after another, and describe the results they contain. While you do so, you will come across points that need to be discussed in the Discussion section. Note them down so you don’t forget them.
• Introduction : When your results are fresh in your mind, you are in a great position to write the Introduction — because the Introduction should contain selected information that gives the reader context for your research project and allows them to understand your results and their implications.
• Discussion : When you have taken notes while writing the Results section, the Discussion section should be quite easy to draft. Don’t worry too early about the order in which you want to discuss the individual points. Write one paragraph for each point , and then see how you can logically arrange them.
• Abstract and title : On the last day, revise the preliminary Abstract or write a new one. You could also take a break of a few days before tackling the Abstract, to gain clarity and distance. Generate multiple titles (I recommend 6-10), so that you and your co-authors can choose the most appropriate one.

Just do it!

Once you have written the whole draft, let it sit for a week or two, and then revise it. Follow my tips for efficient revising and get your revision checklist that will guide you step-by-step through the whole process.

Every student in every Bachelor’s program has to write a major paper. It has to be better than good. It’s essentially an accumulation of everything you have learned—or rather, using what you have learned to explore your own perspectives and ideas.

There isn’t exactly a magic formula for creating an amazing thesis, but there is a structure you can follow to do it in a timely manner. More than likely, you’ve had all semester to write your paper, but you have procrastinated. But, it is not a problem! We know how to write it in a month. Proceed!

The first week is perhaps the most important. It’s when you will come up with all your ideas and narrow them down to one. This decision will impact the rest of the month greatly. Make sure to choose something you have a personal interest in!

• Make a list of potential topics or questions you have within your field of study;
• Narrow them down until you have one that interests you the most. If you have two, after you do the next step you should be able to choose between them;
• Start doing some background reading on the chosen topic or topics;
• Come up with a question you plan to answer in your paper;
• Answer the question in one sentence. Here is your thesis statement.

By now, you have to perfect your thesis statement (although you can amend it later), and move on to the next step. During the second week, you’ll need to focus on all your resources and start creating an outline.

• Go to your local library or school’s library and gather some valuable resources to find out some information to research the issue of your paper;
• Scour online academic database for articles as sources too;
• Pull out some important points or quotes you would like to include in your thesis;
• Make a reference page in accordance with whatever style you are asked to write in (APA, MLA, etc.)
• Organize your ideas into a preliminary outline;
• Make a more formal outline with notes about what you are going to talk about.

Halfway through! Great work is not so far! Now comes the bulk of the project—sit down and actually write it all out.

• Using your outline, flesh it out! There’s no easy way to do this, you just have to sit down and write;
• To space it out, you can write a section or two of the paper each day;
• When you finish, see if you want to move some paragraphs or content around. This is the start of the editing process.

Now you have the working draft, you need a final one by the end of the week. This week’s tasks include making final edits and getting a peer to read your paper.

• Complete the editing process by checking for spelling and mechanical errors;
• Read your bachelor’s thesis paper out loud to make sure it sounds good;
• Give it to a friend, peer, or family member to read over and see if they can find any mistakes or if they understand it clearly;
• Hand it in and go celebrate!

8 Tips to Write a Thesis in 30 Days (Bonus Tip Included)

Every student wants to know how to write a thesis in a month . Before sharing the tips that I’ve used in my writing journey, we first need to ask: is it possible to write a thesis in one month, and actually finish it? The answer to this question is yes! You absolutely can write a thesis in 30 days. And you can write your thesis, from start to finish, without the emotional distress that often comes with such a monumental task. And, before you ask, no you’re not going to pay anybody to write a thesis for you. You’re going to write your thesis by yourself.

I’ve written two Masters’ theses, a PhD dissertation and a draft of a book. Here are the 8 tips that have helped me write my thesis as quickly as possible and get to the other side.

3.1 Use Grammarly: An Online Writing Assistant

Before we start, let me say that no one is born knowing how to write a thesis. My professors were not born knowing how to write a thesis and I wasn’t born knowing how to write a thesis either.

I learned how to write a thesis. It was not easy, and I struggled a lot in writing my first thesis. That’s until I discovered what I needed to do to push through and finish writing it.

I then used those lessons and applied them to my second thesis and every writing assignments since then. Writing became fun. 

In fact, I was having so much fun writing my second thesis that I took on extra writing assignments. Hence the birth of this blog.

1. Adjust Your Expectations

If you want to finish writing your thesis in a month, the first thing you need to recognize is that you don’t need to break new grounds in your thesis for your thesis to be acceptable.

If for some reason you think you need to break new grounds, then you need to quickly adjust your expectations. The point of a thesis is to demonstrate mastery of the literature and show that you’re able to competently synthesize  and present those works persuasively.

That’s all you need to do.

If you’re aiming for more, then consider these two points:

• You don’t have the advanced training or the experience yet to “contribute” to the field. It’s certainly not impossible, but that’s not what’s expected of you in your M.A thesis (and even in your PhD thesis). In fact, if you can just slightly “advance” the research, that’s considered a great accomplishment!
• You need much longer than 30 days or 3 months or even 3 years to come up with something new. Why? Because you need to read literally everything on your subject. And that’s what you’re expected to do when you’ve already finished writing your thesis, and decided to pursue an academic career.

For these two reasons, I think it’s best to view your thesis as something that reflects what you’ve been trained to do, which is to write a good thesis using the skills you already have. You are enough and you probably already have what it takes to write your thesis. So don’t be too hard on yourself. Think of this: Just like you can’t run a marathon if you’ve been training for a 5k, you also can’t “contribute to the field” when you’re still in the process of being trained on how to write a thesis. Most probably, this is your first time writing a masters degree thesis, so take it easy. (More on writing a PhD dissertation below).

So, adjust your expectations accordingly.

Now, if you are trying to write your PhD thesis in a month, let me first say that it’s almost impossible. But if you have certain circumstances (say like a serious illness), then talk to your advisor about it and see what he/she suggests.

2. Don’t Be a Perfectionist

A professor once told me, if you want to write a perfect thesis, “you will never finish writing.” And he was right. I can’t begin to tell you just how much time I wasted trying to write a flawless thesis (AHHH!). In the end, it was not worth it. I ended up procrastinating and wasting time. I wish I could have that time back. Please, don’t make the same mistake I made.

After that emotionally draining experience, I changed my approach. I strove to write something good (and not perfect). I then got feedback on my ideas from my professors and went back and made them better. Eventually, they were, in my eyes, perfect. I was happy.

If you still think you need to be a perfectionist, consider this: there’s always more you can say about your topic. There are more examples you can discuss, more evidence to support your arguments with, and there is an infinite number of ways to organize your ideas, paragraphs and chapters to eventually turn your thesis into a “masterpiece.” You literally can go on forever writing and re-writing your thesis.

If you’re tight on time and you want to finish writing your thesis in 30 days, then do yourself a favor and focus on being done . Write something that’s good enough and move on knowing that you will get back to it later. 

So stop fixing things day in and day out. The goal is to make linear progress every single day until you’re done.

Remember, a mediocre finished thesis is better than a perfect unfinished one.

3. Take the 80/20 Rule Seriously

Each writing assignment will take you as much time as you’re willing to give it.

So if you give yourself 10 hours to write what usually takes 2 hours, then you will spend 10 hours working on it.

And the opposite is true.

If you have an assignment that usually takes 10 hours to finish, and I give you 2 hours to work on it, you will probably finish it in 2 hours.

On this basis, if you want to write your thesis in 30 days, you have to decide that 30 days is all you have to finish writing it. Be firm about this deadline, and work with the aim of finishing.

4. Don’t Reinvent the Wheel

Here’s a dose of realism.

As original as you would like to be in your thesis, someone has already written on your topic… and that’s a great thing!

Someone has read the same sources, summarized them and put them in their literature review. You can save yourself a whole lot of time by reading literature reviews. There, you will see exactly how they used those sources and how they might fit into your work. Consult the original sources briefly, but as much as necessary to get the main ideas out of them, and move on.

A literature review shouldn’t take you more than a week to complete if you plan to finish writing in 30 days, and that’s totally doable.

5. Complete a Quick First Draft

The fastest way to finish writing is to write quickly…duh.

What I mean by that is if you’re stuck and you can’t quite round up the paragraph or idea you’re working on, don’t dwell on it. Move on to other topics within your thesis and write them out. 

The most helpful tip that I can share with you is to force yourself to write a quick high school draft (first draft) of the entire thesis. Go all the way through until you have a completed first draft of your thesis in your hands.

This is going to be tremendously helpful for your progress because if you can see the conclusion of your thesis, you will a have better sense of which parts of your thesis need work, and which parts need to be completely cut out. 

In fact, that’s, in my opinion, the only way to know what your thesis really needs. I say this because imagine if you had spent tens of hours fixing a paragraph only to discover later on (or be told by your advisor) that you really don’t need it.

Let me tell you, it freakin sucks!

6. Journal Articles Are Your Best Friend

Journal articles are usually less than 25 pages in length and sometimes even less than 15 pages long. The best part about them: they’re succinct. You can pretty much read the abstract and you’ll know exactly what the main argument is and the strategy of the paper.

All you need to do then is to look for the evidence in the paper itself. It shouldn’t take you anything more than 3 hours to get this information out of the paper. And when you get good at this, it will take you even less than 3 hours.

Moreover, journal articles are a great way to help position your thesis within the literature on the topic, and you will have a much clearer destination when you do so.

7. Write (Your Thesis) Everywhere

If you’ve been following my blog, then you know that I champion using free time effectively.  

Plan to read or write everywhere : whether you’re waiting on a friend, waiting for the bus, or eating lunch. It will help you address what I’ve called elsewhere as the “familiarity deficit.” Read that post here . Don’t underestimate the value of that time. It will give you a much needed head-start when it’s time to sit down and work on the relevant chapter within your thesis.

The key to finishing your thesis in 30 days is to keep writing even when you don’t feel you’ve got much to say. It will come to you, just don’t give up too soon.

8. Bonus Tip – Join Online Writing Communities

Yes. Join online writing communities. They’re free and you will get a whole lot of support from people who are going through the same thing. Try Phinished . I’ve used it when I wrote my first thesis and it helped me a bunch. 

I need to caution that it is easy to spend a lot of time on Phinished reading what others have to say. You might find yourself reading page after page about the challenges others are going through: including what they’re doing to move through the process, and how far they are in their thesis writing. 

If you want to finish, then use it with the intention to finish  and not to waste more time or procrastinate.

Work on your bachelor, master or PhD thesis in shifts - and get it done

Working in shifts is horrible... Sometimes early in the morning, sometimes late into the evening, sometimes all night... But when it comes to a scientific project, working in shifts is a good idea. Actually, working in shifts helps define clear work plans.

Such work plans are a good idea for the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral thesis. These can then be worked off nicely one after the other. So much for the theory... In order to make sure that working in shifts works well and that night shifts are not necessary as you get closer to the due date, check out our tips for planning your shifts here.

When working on the thesis, plan the shifts for only 2 hours each

Organize your shifts in two hour slots. Normally shifts last a third, half or a whole day. But the thesis is not a normal project... two hours will force you to work until you reach your stopping point.

Assign a time frame for each work planss of the thesis

A two-hour shift can be well dedicated to one work package of the thesis.  This will help you get into a flow, a working rhythm, and bring you closer and closer to the goal of the thesis, the finished text.

Make taking breaks a routine when you’re working on your thesis.

We love breaks but we always forget about them. Of course, it’s great when you are in the middle of work and can't stop; then you're in a real flow. However, we know that we need some recovery time. The two-hour shifts help us to remember. Breaks are good for work morale!

Coordinate the shifts with your day job.

If you write your thesis alongside your work, you may only have a few hours a day to focus on it. In this case the two-hour shifts are good because they are easy to keep track of.

Use steps for variety in the thesis.

Variety is good for us and similarly, it’s great for your thesis. Steps can be used to create a wide variety of tasks such as researching, filling out tables, designing questionnaires, preparing consultations, writing, etc. Take advantage of it.

Set two-hour shifts in your calendar.

Two hours can be easily inserted into a digital calendar and copied to other days. This helps with planning and organization for the next days and weeks.

Consider your shifts as small milestones for the thesis

Shifts of two hours make the whole thesis more manageable. Each shift is a small milestone and you always have something to celebrate at the end of the shift.

Reward yourself after each shift if you reach your goal.

Taking a break alone is a great reward when you finish a shift... Other rewards lead to distractions such as eating, drinking, playing, talking on the phone, cleaning, short shopping, etc.

Reflect during your break after a shift

You will continue to think about the issues in your work plan. This is vital to forming a deeper understanding. This is ultimately how the cognitive process works. We make connections in our brains and are then ready to absorb new knowledge.

Work for 2 hours then take a 15-minute break.

This power-working, power-sleeping technique has proven itself. Supposedly Leonardo da Vinci did the same. And he was very productive.

1. Preparing your thesis project

1.1 features and prerequisites .

The bachelor's thesis is a module in the Psychology programme that once completed is rewarded with 15 ECTS, this equals to 420 hours of study (approximately 2.3 months full time work). The bachelor’s thesis builds on the second year research module and is scheduled as part of the third and final year of the bachelor's programme in Psychology, in the second semester. You can also start the bachelor’s thesis at the start of the first semester (e.g. if you have a study delay). In order to start with your bachelor's thesis you need to meet the prerequisites: you have obtained your first and second year ofthe bachelor’s programme. If you do not meet the prerequisites because you failed for example a module component of your first or second year, you can contact your study adviser ([email protected]). The completion of the bachelor’s thesis takes one semester. During this period, you will be working on your bachelor’s thesis for about 2-3 days a week. This way you will still have time for the other module that is planned during the second semester.

Depending on the specialization that you have chosen, you work on the bachelor’s thesis individually or in groups, but each student must write an individual report. There are assignments available for each specialization. Below you can find more information about the procedure of choosing a specialization, selecting an assignment and how you are supervised. 

1.2 Choosing your specialization 

1.2.1 sign up for a specialization.

Well before the start of each semester, the coordinator of the bachelor's thesis, Nienke Peeters ( [email protected] ) will invite you to think about and eventually sign up for the specialization you would like to write your thesis in. You can write your thesis in different fields of Psychology, namely in the specializations/tracks:

• Conflict, Risk and Safety (CRS);
• Health Psychology and Technology (HPT);
• Human Factors and Engineering Psychology (HFE);
• Educational Psychology (EP);
• Positive Clinical Psychology and Technology (PCPT);
• Professional Development at the Workplace (HRD/OWK)*
• Research Methodology, Measurement and Data Analysis (RMMD/OMD).

The specialization you choose in your bachelor’s thesis does not determine the master track you can do after your bachelor’s programme. Therefore, it is possible to choose different specializations in your bachelor’s thesis and master track. * Please note that successful participation in the (minor)module Professional Learning in Organizations is a prerequisite for choosing the bachelor thesis in this specialization/domain.

1.2.2 track coordinators

For every specialization,there is a coordinator, called track coordinator. The track coordinators have the task to coordinate the graduation and education within one specialization/track. If,after reading the information, you have specific questions about graduation within a specialization or thesis assignment you can contact the relevant track coordinator.

1.3 Choosing an assignment

A few weeks before the start of a new bachelor's thesis track, the relevant assignments for each specialization will be made available on the website for those students who intend to participate/signed up for a specialization. There are two options in choosing your bachelor’s thesis assignment. First, you can choose an existing assignment from the website. You will have to select a number of assignments of your interest and subsequently the theme coordinator will allocate you to an assignment. Second, you can write a proposal for your own assignment. In this case, you have to send a brief research proposal (1 A4) to the theme coordinator of the specialization of your interest 2 months prior to the start of the bachelor’s thesis. Make sure that your proposal contains the topic of your choice, the target group, and the method of approaching the target group, a conceptual research question and a short motivation. You can discuss your proposal during a meeting with the track coordinator. If the assignment seems feasible, the theme coordinator will try to find a supervisor who is willing and able to supervise the assignment.

1.4 Supervision

Bachelor's thesis committees consist of two members: a daily supervisor (first supervisor) and a second examiner, both of whom are University of Twente staff members. At least one of the two supervisors must hold a PhD; the other must hold at least a Master’s degree. The first supervisor is primarily responsible (together with you) for the final product and is your main contact person. Your first supervisor provides you with feedback and has meetings with you to guide your progress. They have 16 hours for this complete process. The second examiner has more of a monitoring role; they guide the process from a distance and function as a second reader for the first supervisor. However, the second examiner will be actively involved in the greenlight and final version of your thesis as a second examiner. They have 4 hours for this complete process.  

A third external supervisor may be involved in the Bachelor's thesis committee in an advisory role. If you conduct your research externally, someone may also supervise you from the company or institution at which you are working, in addition to these two supervisors. If you carry out your research on location, it is best for your supervisor to discuss this with the organization where you will be conducting research. The track coordinator will let you know who your supervisor will be. Please contact your first supervisor as soon as possible to arrange an initial meeting.
