  • Introduction: The introduction sets the stage for your speech and grabs the audience's attention. It should include a hook or attention-grabbing opening, introduce the topic, and provide an overview of what will be covered.
  • Opening/captivating statement: This is a strong statement that immediately engages the audience and creates curiosity about the speech topics.
  • Thesis statement/central idea: The thesis statement or central idea is a concise statement that summarizes the main point or argument of your speech. It serves as a roadmap for the audience to understand what your speech is about.
  • Body: The body of the speech is where you elaborate on your main points or arguments. Each point is typically supported by evidence, examples, statistics, or anecdotes. The body should be organized logically and coherently, with smooth transitions between the main points.
  • Supporting evidence: This includes facts, data, research findings, expert opinions, or personal stories that support and strengthen your main points. Well-chosen and credible evidence enhances the persuasive power of your speech.
  • Transitions: Transitions are phrases or statements that connect different parts of your speech, guiding the audience from one idea to the next. Effective transitions signal the shifts in topics or ideas and help maintain a smooth flow throughout the speech.

How to structure a good speech

You know what message you want to transmit, who you’re delivering it to, and even how you want to say it. But you need to know how to start, develop, and close a speech before writing it. 

Think of a speech like an essay. It should have an introduction, conclusion, and body sections in between. This places ideas in a logical order that the audience can better understand and follow them. Learning how to make a speech with an outline gives your storytelling the scaffolding it needs to get its point across.

Here’s a general speech structure to guide your writing process:

How to write a compelling speech opener

Some research shows that engaged audiences pay attention for only 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Other estimates are even lower, citing that people stop listening intently in fewer than 10 minutes . If you make a good first impression at the beginning of your speech, you have a better chance of interesting your audience through the middle when attention spans fade. 

Implementing the INTRO model can help grab and keep your audience’s attention as soon as you start speaking. This acronym stands for interest, need, timing, roadmap, and objectives, and it represents the key points you should hit in an opening. 

Here’s what to include for each of these points: 

  • Interest : Introduce yourself or your topic concisely and speak with confidence . Write a compelling opening statement using relevant data or an anecdote that the audience can relate to.
  • Needs : The audience is listening to you because they have something to learn. If you’re pitching a new app idea to a panel of investors, those potential partners want to discover more about your product and what they can earn from it. Read the room and gently remind them of the purpose of your speech. 
  • Timing : When appropriate, let your audience know how long you’ll speak. This lets listeners set expectations and keep tabs on their own attention span. If a weary audience member knows you’ll talk for 40 minutes, they can better manage their energy as that time goes on. 
  • Routemap : Give a brief overview of the three main points you’ll cover in your speech. If an audience member’s attention starts to drop off and they miss a few sentences, they can more easily get their bearings if they know the general outline of the presentation.
  • Objectives : Tell the audience what you hope to achieve, encouraging them to listen to the end for the payout. 

Writing the middle of a speech

The body of your speech is the most information-dense section. Facts, visual aids, PowerPoints — all this information meets an audience with a waning attention span. Sticking to the speech structure gives your message focus and keeps you from going off track, making everything you say as useful as possible.

Limit the middle of your speech to three points, and support them with no more than three explanations. Following this model organizes your thoughts and prevents you from offering more information than the audience can retain.

If public speaking gives you the jitters, you’re not alone. Roughly 80% of the population feels nervous before giving a speech, and another 10% percent experiences intense anxiety and sometimes even panic.

  • What do I want my audience to feel, think, or do after I finish speaking?

Understanding your audience is crucial for tailoring your speech effectively. Consider the demographics of your audience, their interests, and their expectations. For instance, if you're addressing a group of healthcare professionals, you'll want to use medical terminology and data that resonate with them. Conversely, if your audience is a group of young students, you'd adjust your content to be more relatable to their experiences and interests. 

3. Choose a clear message

Your message should be the central idea that you want your audience to take away from your speech. Let's say you're giving a speech on climate change. Your clear message might be something like, "Individual actions can make a significant impact on mitigating climate change." Throughout your speech, all your points and examples should support this central message, reinforcing it for your audience.

4. Structure your speech

Organizing your speech properly keeps your audience engaged and helps them follow your ideas. The introduction should grab your audience's attention and introduce the topic. State Your Thesis

Clearly and concisely state the main point or purpose of your speech. Your thesis should be easy to follow and clearly outline the main argument and your stance. This will give your audience a clear understanding of what they can expect to learn from your presentation.

The purpose of a speech is often to inform or persuade an audience. 

Speeches are usually written to be spoken directly to an audience and can be used to entertain, influencing the listeners that the viewpoint of the speaker is correct. 

Speeches can also be used to encourage the audience to take action or to change their behaviour in some way; for example, to join a particular school club or society, or to recycle more. 

The ways you use language and vocabulary when writing the words of a speech will depend on the audience and the purpose you are writing for; for example, in a speech to a group of teachers and parents giving your views on a recent proposal, formal language is most appropriate.

  • think about the audience that the speech is for  – are you giving your speech to a group of people you know, or do not know, or a mixture of both? If you know your audience well, you may be able to relax a little, but a speech is still a formal kind of talk and would usually not include slang
  • whether your audience are likely to disagree with what you say – you will need to consider any possible objections and deal with them. Use language carefully to make objections seem less significant; for example, using phrases like ‘A few people may still think, however’
  • the reason you are giving this speech and how you feel about this topic  – try to imagine the words of your speech as you would speak them out loud. Your tone of voice must match your message, so choose words that appeal to the emotions of your listeners. Focus on what you want your audience to know and feel by the end of your speech
  • how to engage your listeners  – f or example, you might use inclusive words or phrases like ‘we’, ‘all of us’ and ‘our’ to make your listeners feel that you are all on the same side.
  • Plan where you want to finish your speech and how you will get there before you start writing – t h e structure of a speech is usually in three parts. For example: 
  • An opening that grabs your audience's attention and makes the overall topic of your speech clear  – for example, pose a question to the audience where you can predict the answer.
  • A well-structured, supported and developed argument –  for example, to support your argument you might use real life examples or anecdotes.
  • A powerful conclusion  –  for example, group your final words or ideas in threes to help make them memorable or end with a thought- provoking question or image and thank your audience for listening.
  • Organise your ideas into paragraphs as appropriate – this will help you to develop and support your points convincingly, to build your argument and/or offer a full explanation of a particular point of view.

Reporting and summarising

When we want to report what people say, we don't usually try to report their exact words. We usually give a  summary , for example:

Direct speech (exact words) :

Mary :  Oh dear. We've been walking for hours! I'm exhausted. I don't think I can go any further. I really need to stop for a rest. Peter :  Don't worry. I'm not surprised you're tired. I'm tired too. I'll tell you what, let's see if we can find a place to sit down, and then we can stop and have our picnic.

Reported speech (summary) :

When Mary complained that she was tired out after walking so far, Peter said they could stop for a picnic.

Reporting verbs

When we want to report what people say, we use reporting verbs . Different reporting verbs have different patterns, for example:

Mary complained (that) she was tired . (verb + that clause) She asked if they could stop for a rest . (verb + if clause) Peter told her not to worry . (verb + to -infinitive) He suggested stopping and having a picnic . (verb + - ing form) 

See reporting verbs with that , wh-  and if clauses , verbs followed by the infinitive , verbs followed by the -ing form .

Tenses in reported speech

When reporting what people say or think in English, we need to remember that the rules for tense forms in reported speech are exactly the same as in the rest of the language.

This is a letter that Andrew wrote ten years ago:

If we wanted to report what Andrew said in his letter, we might say something like this: 

Andrew said that when he  was  22, he was an engineering student in his last month at university. He wanted  to travel abroad after he  had finished  his course at the university, but he would need to earn some money while he was abroad so he wanted  to learn to teach English as a foreign language. A friend  had recommended  a course but Andrew needed more information, so he wrote to the school and asked them when their courses started  and how much they were . He also wanted to know if there was  an examination at the end of the course.

We would naturally use past tense forms to talk about things which happened ten years ago. So, tenses in reports and summaries in English are the same as in the rest of the language.

Sometimes we can choose between a past tense form and a  present tense  form. If we're talking about the past but we mention something that's still true , we can use the present tense:

John said he'd stayed at the Shangri-la because it' s the best hotel in town. Mary said she enjoyed the film because Robert de Niro is her favourite actor. Helen said she  loves visiting New York.

or the past tense:

John said he'd stayed at the Shangri-la because it was the best hotel in town. Mary said she enjoyed the film because Robert de Niro was her favourite actor. Helen said she  loved visiting New York.

If we're talking about something that  everybody knows is true , we normally use the present tense :

Michael said he'd always wanted to climb Everest because it' s the highest mountain in the world. Mary said she loved visiting New York because it' s such an exciting city.

Hi! I found the following paragraph from a grammar site while I was studying the reported speech. Can you help me? It says; --> We can use a perfect form with have + -ed form after modal verbs, especially where the report looks back to a hypothetical event in the past: He said the noise might have been the postman delivering letters. (original statement: ‘The noise might be the postman delivering letters.’)

And my question is: How do we understand if it is a hypothetical event in the past or not? We normally don't change 'might' in reported speech. (e.g. ‘It might snow tonight,’ he warned. --> He warned that it might snow that night.) But why do we say 'He said the noise might have been the postman delivering letters.' instead of 'He said that the noise might be the postman delivering letters.’ What's the difference between these two indirect reported speeches? Could you please explain the difference? And I also found this example which is about the same rule above: --> He said he would have helped us if we’d needed a volunteer. (original statement: a) ‘I’ll help you if you need a volunteer’ or b) ‘I’d help you if you needed a volunteer.’) Can you also explain why we report this sentence like that. How can we both change a) and b) into the same indirect reported speech? Thank you very much!

1. He said the noise might have been the postman delivering letters. 2. He said that the noise might be the postman delivering letters.

In sentence 1 it is clear that the noise has ended; it is a noise that 'he' could hear but it is not a noise that you can hear now. In sentence 2 the noise could have ended or it could be a noise that you can still hear now. For example, if the noise is one which is constant, such as a noise that comes from your car engine that you are still trying to identify, then you would use sentence 2. In other words, sentence 2 allows for a wider range of time possibilities - both past (ended) and present (still current).

Your second question is similar:

He said he would have helped us if we needed a volunteer - you no longer need a volunteer

He said he would help us if we needed a volunteer - this could still be relevant; you may still need a volunteer.

You can but it is unusual. If you say  I was eating an apple  (past continuous), it means that it was in the past. You already finished eating the apple and you are not eating it now. But if your friend asked you just a moment ago, I guess you are still eating the apple when she/he asks the second question, so I would say  I'm eating an apple  (because you are still doing it).

Alternatively, you can use a past tense reporting verb e.g. I said I was eating an apple  (referring to the time of the first question), or  I said I 'm eating an apple  (to show that you are still eating it now, at the moment of speaking).

The verb may or may not be backshifted, depending on whether the original speaker's point of view and the reporter's point of view are the same or not. For example:

  • She said it had been quite a while since she last saw me . (it seems relatively recent, for both the original speaker and the reporter)
  • She said it had been quite a while since she had last seen us . (a lot of time has passed between speaking and reporting this, or the situation has changed a lot since then e.g. they have met frequently since then)
  • She said she had met her grandfather before he died . (seems quite recent)
  • She said she had met her grandfather before he'd died . (a lot of time has passed between speaking and reporting this)

First of all, the sentence is not grammatically correct. The phrase is 'no such thing' (singular), not 'things'.

How you report it depends. Using 'said' as the reporting verb we have two possibilities:

1. They said (that) there's no such thing as good news in America. 2. They said (that) there was no such thing as good news in America.

Sentence 2 tells that only about the time when 'they' said it. It does not tell us if it is still true or not.

Sentence 1 tells us that what 'they' said is still relevant today. In other words there was no good news (in their opinion) when they spoke, and there is still no good news now.

Hi, I am translating a fiction novel into English and need your help regarding the reporting speech as for few things I am not getting any clear understanding over the internet. As you know in fiction, we need to write in non-ordinary way to create unique impressions of the word and academic writing is different than speaking. Will be grateful if you could give your insight below, especially considering in the context of fiction/academic writing.

1) Let’s say If someone is giving a speech or presentation, I want to mix their speech, indirect-direct and past tense- present tense. Below are three examples:

-He said, their company makes excellent profit every year OR their company made excellent profit every year ( can both be correct? As the sentence)

- Roger had given his speech yesterday. He said, their company makes excellent profit every year and your company will sustain for next hundred years.(Can YOUR be used in the sentence)

- Roger said people wants to feel important OR Roger said people wanted to feel important (which will be correct as this is a trait which is true in past and present)

2) He thought why he is talking to her OR He thought why he was talking to her (are both write? As usually I see in novels the second example with WAS)

3) Gia was sitting with Jake and she told him she had met with her last year. Her mother had taken her to the dinner. Her mother had told her about her future plans. Her mother also had paid the bill for the dinner. (Do I need to use every time past perfect in this example though it doesn’t feel natural? As a rule of thumb I think past perfect needs to be used when we talk about another past event in the past )

1) In the second clause, you can use present or past. We often use the present when it's still true now, but the past is not wrong. FYI we don't normally use a comma after 'said' in reported speech.

2) 'Why was he talking to her?' he thought.

3) This is really more of a question of style than grammar. Here I would suggest doing something like combining the four sentences into two and then leaving out 'had' in the second verb in each sentence. Even if it isn't written, it's understood to be past perfect.

The verb form remains the same when we want to make it clear that the situation described by the verb is still true, and this works in the same way as indirect speech. For example:

She said she loves me. [she loved me then and she loves me still] She said she loved me. [she loved me then; no information on how she feels now]

Other than this rule, the choice is really contextual and stylistic (up to the speaker). Sometimes a choice implies something. For example, the saying 'time is money' is a general statement, so if you choose to backshift here the listener will know it is an intentional choice and suspect that something has changed (you no longer believe it).

Hi teachers, I've read almost the section of comments below and my summarize is the present tense only can be used if the statement is still true now and past simple only tells the statement was true in the past and doesn't tell the statement is true or not now. Just to make sure, I wanna ask, If I'm not sure whether the statement is still true or not now, can I choose backshift instead (this is still apply to past tense become past perfect)? Thank you

In that case, I would choose answer 2. I might even add "... but I don't know if she still does" to the sentence to clarify, if that is the key point you want to communicate.

Both sentences are grammatically possible.

The first sentence is only possible if when the person asks the original question the woman is no longer there (she has already gone). The second sentence can be used in this situation too, or in a situation in which the woman was still there when the original question was asked. As the past tense is used in the original question ( Who was... ), both sentences are possible.

When the situation is still true at the time of reporting, we can leave the verb form unchanged. For example:

1. She told me she loved me.
2. She told me she loves me.

In sentence 1 we know she loved me when she told me but we don't know whether or not she loves me now. In sentence 2, we know she loved me when she told me and we know that she loves me now.

In your example, if the supermarket is still in the same place then we can use either form. If the supermarket has been closed down or moved to another location then we need to use was .

As for which is 'safer', you'll need to make your own mind up! Keeping the verb in the same form carries more specific information and that may be appropriate or even important.

The first two sentences are possible and they can both mean that he is still Mary's boyfriend now. The first one makes this more clear, but the second one doesn't only refer to the past.

Regarding your first question, the most common way of saying it is the second one. In some very specific situation, perhaps the first option would be possible.

This also answers your second question. It is not necessary to always backshift using the tenses you mention.

As for your third question, no, it is not necessary. In fact, it is probably more common to use the past simple in the reported speech as well.

Both forms are possible. If you use  had been  then we understand that he was there earlier but not when he said it - in other words, when he said it he had already left. If you use was then he may have left at the time of speaking, or he may have still been there.

I would recommend using answer a) because this is the general pattern used in reported speech. Sometimes the verb in the reported clause can be in the present tense when we are speaking about a situation that is still true, but the reported verb in the past tense can also have the same meaning. Since here the time referred to could be either past or present, I'd recommend using the past form.

This is an example of an indirect question. An indirect question reports a question, but is not a question itself, which is why we do not use a question mark at the end. Since it is not a question, we use the normal word order without inversion or auxiliary verbs. For example:

Indicative: He lives in Rome. Interrogative: Does he live in Rome? (Where does he live?) Reported: She asked if he lives in Rome. (She asked where he lives.)

There are different styles of punctuating direct speech -- in other words, you might find other sources that will disagree with me -- but what I would use here is something different: "The boss is dead!" said the doctor.

The form that comes after the auxiliary verb 'do' (or 'does' or 'did') is not the plural present simple verb, but rather the bare infinitive (also known as 'base form' or 'first form') of the verb. Does that make sense?

This is very formal language. The phrase 'to the effect that' means 'with the meaning that'. In this context it can be understood to mean 'with the result that'.

The difference is quite logical. If we use 'said' then we are talking about a claim by Peter in the past which he may or may not still maintain. If we use 'says' then we are talking about an opinion expressed by Peter which he still holds.

The reported information (whether or not Rooney is in good shape) can refer to only the past or to the present as well and the statement (what Peter thinks) can separately refer to only the past or the present as well. Of course, all of this is from the point of view of the person reporting Peter's opinion, and whether or not they think that Peter still thinks now what he thought then.

Both are possible. If you use the present tense then it is clear that the statement is still true (i.e. the business was not growing when Mary spoke and is still not growing now). If you use the past tense then no information is given regarding the present (i.e. the business was growing when Mary spoke and may or may not be growing now).

Here's how it works:

We use a 'reporting verb' like 'say' or 'tell'. ( Click here for more about using 'say' and 'tell' .) If this verb is in the present tense, it's easy. We just put 'she says' and then the sentence:

  • Direct speech: I like ice cream.
  • Reported speech: She says (that) she likes ice cream.

We don't need to change the tense, though probably we do need to change the 'person' from 'I' to 'she', for example. We also may need to change words like 'my' and 'your'. (As I'm sure you know, often, we can choose if we want to use 'that' or not in English. I've put it in brackets () to show that it's optional. It's exactly the same if you use 'that' or if you don't use 'that'.)

But , if the reporting verb is in the past tense, then usually we change the tenses in the reported speech:

  • Reported speech: She said (that) she liked ice cream.

* doesn't change.

  • Direct speech: The sky is blue.
  • Reported speech: She said (that) the sky is/was blue.

Need some ideas for grammar goals for speech therapy? If you’re feeling stuck, keep on reading! In this post, I’ll provide some suggestions you could use for writing iep goals for grammar and sentence structure. Think of this blog post as an informal goal bank- one you can use to get some ideas for goal writing. Not only that, but I’ll also share some strategies for language intervention.

The important thing to remember is that grammar and syntax are very important areas to target in your therapy room (or classroom, if you do push-in therapy). This is because grammar and syntax affect reading comprehension . Children with language disorders on your caseload will likely need explicit and intentional instruction in this area. P.S. Smart Goals

As a reminder: you know your student best and will want to individualize all goals and make them measurable . This is really an “informal iep goal bank of ideas”. These goal ideas are simply intended to help get your creative juices flowing. Feel free to modify or expand on them . In fact, please do!

If you need help writing a measurable goal, you may want to read about the SMART framework. Smart goals are specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and time-bound. You’ll need to decide on factors like what % progress will be measured, how many consecutive sessions you would like your student to demonstrate that percentage, and by what date you’d like your student to achieve this goal.

Verb Tense Review

Conjunctions Review for SLPs

I wanted to make sure you had a quick reference for conjunctions as well!

I explain that conjunctions are words that join sentences or sentence parts together to my students.

Here are the types of conjunctions:

  • coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, so, yet)
  • correlative conjunctions (coordinating conjunctions that work as a pair, such as both…and)
  • subordinating conjunctions (conjunctions that tell us about cause and effect, time, condition, or concessions)

How I Write IEP Goals for Younger Children

Younger students can- and SHOULD- work on grammar and syntax, too! Verbs are a great place to start when targeting expressive language. In fact, research tells us that focusing on “harder” verbs may be more effective . Therefore, I not only work on labeling verbs in therapy, but I also address grammatical morphemes . I additionally believe that exposure to a variety of sentence structures and sentence types (interrogative, negative sentences, interrogative sentences) during speech therapy sessions is very important.

We can use intervention strategies with young children in language therapy such as direct teaching, modeling, expansion, verbal prompts to use the grammatical target, and recasts .

If you need a quick review, morphemes are the smallest unit of language. There are grammatical morphemes (such as a plural -s ending) and derivational morphemes (prefixes and suffixes).

Early grammatical morphemes can include present progressive -ing (i.e. eating), plural -s (i.e. shoes), prepositions (in, on), possessive ‘s’ (i.e. mommy’s bag), regular past tense -ed, articles, and conjunctions. For a more comprehensive list of grammatical morphemes, see this chart from ASHA .

Our speech goals for grammar and syntax should involve encouraging young children to use more morphemes to create longer utterances. When we don’t use morphemes, the result is telegraphic speech. (Reference: Pence, Khara L. “Building Blocks of Language.” Language Development From Theory To Practice ,” Pearson Education, Inc. , Upper Saddle River, NJ, 2008, pp. 82–101.)

It’s also important to remember that to work on grammatical endings, our students must be able to SAY the required speech sounds. This will likely mean explicit instruction in articulation, which I why I am including articulation goals in this list .

Grammar Goals for Speech Therapy (Preschoolers):

  • label actions or pictured actions during play-based activities
  • use grammatical markers (i.e. verb + ing) to describe actions or pictured actions
  • use present progressive verbs (verb +ing) to describe actions
  • create simple sentences using 2-3 word utterances (i.e. agent + action) to show a variety of communicative intents
  • express negation (no, can’t, won’t, don’t) in utterances or simple sentences of 2-3 words in length
  • ask questions (wh questions, yes- no questions) during play
  • use early prepositions (in, on) in simple sentences
  • use grammatical markers (i.e. possessive ‘s: the cat’s toy) in sentences
  • create complex sentences using conjunctions (i.e. and)
  • create spoken sentences containing embedded prepositional phrases
  • label common objects using grammatical endings (i.e. plural ‘s ending: toys)
  • correctly produce final consonant clusters to indicate a past tense grammatical ending (i.e. /t/, /d/, “id”)
  • correctly produce final consonants and/ or final consonant clusters to mark plurals
  • correctly produce final consonant clusters to mark possessive ‘s’ grammatical endings

How I Write IEP Goals for School Age Children

What are some good grammar goals for speech therapy with school age children? By the way, I discussed my speech goals for 4th and 5th graders earlier. This blog post, however, specifically is focusing on grammar goals and syntax goals. I’ve already discussed that I feel like it is super important to include morphology in expressive language intervention. That’s why you’ll specifically see some goals devoted to grammatical morphemes and derivational morphemes.

I think there is a huge importance, as well, in teaching our students how to pronounce grammatical endings (especially for past tense and plurals).

Our students also need to know how these grammatical endings will look in print.

For structured language activities that target past tense verbs and morphology, you can check out this grammar program . Grammar Goals for Speech Therapy: School Age Children

  • correctly pronounce past tense -ed verbs (sounds like /t/, sounds like /d/, sounds like “id”)
  • sort base verbs by the correct past tense suffix ending (d or ed)
  • identify the base and suffix within words (i.e. dance/d)
  • create the past tense form of a verb by adding a suffix (d or ed)
  • use regular past tense verbs at the sentence level to describe actions or pictured actions
  • correctly pronounce plural -s nouns (sounds like /s/, sounds like /z/, sounds like “is”)
  • retell a short story using transitional words
  • explain cause and effect about a picture or story event using causal conjunctions
  • use irregular past tense verbs in sentences to describe actions or pictured actions
  • sort words into correct piles based on part of speech (i.e. noun vs verb)
  • identify parts of speech or sentence parts within sentences
  • complete sentence fill-in tasks using targeted parts of speech or sentence parts
  • arrange scrambled words into meaningful sentences
  • complete spoken/ written sentences using relative clauses
  • create a sentence about a picture using a targeted coordinating conjunction
  • finish spoken sentence starters using targeted subordinating conjunctions
  • use a target word (i.e. adjective) to describe a picture
  • add modifiers (i.e. adjectives, adverbs) to spoken/ written sentences
  • join sentences or sentence parts together using a target conjunction (coordinating, subordinating) or conjunction pair (correlative)
  • create a complex sentence about a picture when provided with a target conjunction
  • choose the correct modifier (ie. adjective, adverb) to correctly complete a sentence
  • when provided with a dependent clause (i.e. Although I studied…), generate an independent clause to finish the sentence
  • create a compound sentence about a picture using a targeted coordinating conjunction

How I Teach Past Tense Verbs in Speech Therapy

In this video , I explain exactly how I teach regular past tense verbs in speech therapy. As I’ve mentioned throughout this post, I like to make sure I’m also addressing morphology. Past tense verbs can be very tricky for our students to figure out. That’s why I like to take a structured approach and really break things down. I make sure to explain what the past tense suffix endings look like and what they mean. We practice sorting verb cards by suffix ending. After that, we practice pronouncing the verbs. I explain the rules for pronouncing past tense verbs to my students. Check out the Past Tense Verbs Program to see how it will be beneficial for your speech therapy students.

  • when the base word ends with a voiceless sound, -ed or -d sounds like /t/ (example: laughed)
  • when the base word ends with a voiced sound, -ed or -d sounds like /d/ (example: waved)

Addressing Grammar Goals for Speech Therapy Using a Communication Device

Many students in special education may require some sort of aided communication. Whether they are using a communication board or a communication device, be sure to provide that student with access to increasing morphology, grammar, and syntax . This means that it’s a good idea to ensure that a communication system contains grammatical endings, for example. Often, communication boards contain core vocabulary. Core vocabulary is very important, of course. However, we want to increase language skills and help our students share information. To encourage the student to increase utterance length and overall communication skills, they need access to more than just single words. They also need access to grammatical morphemes, derivational morphemes, and grammatical parts of speech, to name just a few things.

Edge , Microsoft ’s default web browser in Windows 11 , is getting new text editing capabilities, including Copilot-assisted rewriting, improved clipboard functionality, and support for handwritten text in forms and web pages via a stylus. 

Windows Copilot is the AI assistant that Microsoft has been busy integrating into Windows 11 and various other products, including Microsoft Edge. It was presented as eventually being able to help you with any task on your device, and while it still looks like there’s a way to go before Copilot lives up to that lofty ambition, it is getting there. 

The new feature, AI Compose, will make rewrite suggestions for text selected by users in editable parts of a web page and can assist writers with possible phrasing improvements and pointers on sentence structure. It’ll also allow users to change the text suggestions’ tone, format, or length.

MSPowerUser compares the new functionality to the popular AI-powered writing assistance tool Grammarly . Apparently, this update will make Copilot more competitive with Google ’s large language model and AI assistant project, Gemini , which is rumored to bring similar features to Google’s rival Chrome web browser.

Adding support in for digital pens and more

Edge will also get support for digital pen writing that will let users write in web pages’ input fields directly, turning their handwriting into text. Microsoft also describes in a blog post that users will be able to make use of Windows Ink support in Edge to do the following with digital pens:  

  • Enter text by writing with a pen in or near an input field 
  • Delete text by scribbling over words to delete them
  • Add or remove spaces by drawing vertical lines in the text
  • Add line breaks by drawing horizontal lines

Other text-related updates that are coming to Edge include a new EditContext API tool for web developers that’s intended to simplify the process of creating custom text editors, an enhanced copy-and-paste function that allows users to copy and paste formatted rich HTML content more reliably, and more control for web developers over Edge’s text prediction function. 

I think this certainly has the potential to be a very helpful addition to Edge, because as Microsoft itself points out, a lot of the web’s success in general is due to its form submission and text editing capabilities. Microsoft has also stated that it would like feedback to improve the feature if needed, and this is a feature where it could take the initiative and actively encourage users to try the feature.

Humza Yousaf’s resignation as first minister of Scotland was, in the end, expected, after a chain of events made his position untenable. It was trailed from early in the morning that he would be resigning, so when he finally addressed the media at lunchtime, there was no sense of shock in the room.

The departure speeches of government leaders are of course as varied as the reasons for which they are given. But there are consistencies across the genre, too.

Such speeches are usually between about 12 and 20 minutes long and follow what is crudely called the “turd sandwich” approach. They begin with a justification of the politician’s record in office, focusing on key successes and innovations. They then make comments about the future of politics – perhaps swiping at certain opponents or even members of their own party – and encourage public vigilance around certain issues. The speech will then conclude with broad comments about what the resigning leader may do in the future, observations that it has been an honour and pleasure to serve the public of “this great nation” and thanks to those who have helped in their career, including family and friends. Often a wife, husband or partner will stand dutifully at their side while the speech is made.

Yousaf spoke for just under 10 minutes , which may be a reflection of his short tenure of just over one year. He also largely resisted the urge to take swipes at others. He “genuinely” wished his party and the opposition well and said he had no ill feeling towards anyone. This may be a reflection of his own culpability in his downfall, but also his age (39) and his thoughts about what may be to come.

Yousaf welled up somewhat when he talked about the support of his wife and family, and this is a common occurrence in departure speeches. Gordon Brown was visibly upset as he spoke for the last time as prime minister in 2010, as was Theresa May in 2019. There are famous photographs of Margaret Thatcher in tears in the back of the car as she left Downing Street in 1990.

Staying humble

Few politicians are afforded the luxury of a departure on their own terms or even under the relatively steady circumstances of a regular turnover of democratic power. Many leave amid the chaos of governmental collapse or being stabbed in the back by rivals. Some leave in light of accusations of wrongdoing or mismanagement.

The context of the departure is important. However, it is often the character of the leader that matters more when it comes to the content and tone of the speech. Some leaders are simply more gracious and eloquent than others and Yousaf managed to convey a sense of humbleness, despite the frustrating circumstances.

This is in contrast to Kevin Rudd who gave one of the most compelling departure speeches at the end of his first stint as prime minister of Australia in 2010. Rudd was unable to speak at times due to his level of emotion, but was also clearly furious at being forced out by his deputy, and then successor, Julia Gillard. His jaw clenched and his words almost hissed at times.

Lost to history?

Few departure speeches are memorable. This is because they tend to have little bearing on policy and contain no profound political message. They also rarely contain any revealing or helpful information about the circumstances that underpin the departure. But there are some exceptions.

Japanese politician Ryutaro Nonomura’s memorable resignation speech went viral in 2014 when he sobbed incoherently and banged his fist on the desk after he had been accused of abusing his expenses.

In terms of importance of content though, the standout departure speech was probably made by US President Dwight Eisenhower when he left the White House in 1961 after two terms in office. Historical records tell us that Eisenhower put a lot of time into drafting his speech and wrote most of it himself. In it he made a profound critique of American politics and society and its direction of travel. He also coined a new term that remains in regular use today: the “military-industrial complex”.

In terms of fundamental issues, facing his country, Yousaf did mention Scottish independence and Scotland’s soft power overseas. But he refrained from discussing climate change and the debate about gender – which were key areas of disagreement with the Green party and Alba party and contributed to his demise. This was not a speech that is likely to be remembered – but perhaps, given the circumstances of his departure, and his own role in it, Yousaf would prefer it that way.

When your best joke of the evening is about how donald trump looks like "the grinch had sex with the lorax," things are clearly looking rough.

Tonight was the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, when America celebrates its most teeth-grittingest night of blazing-tepid comedy. Yes, the annual tradition that sees Washington D.C.’s funniest people prove that depressing reality in dismal detail, while a paid comedian prepares themselves to be compared unfavorably to Stephen Colbert , has come and gone again, producing upwards of two whole big laughs in the entire process.

As people who watched the event—possibly because they were being paid to, on the off, and ultimately unfounded, chance that Colin Jost would say more than one funny or newsworthy thing—will know, it was full, as always, of wholesome stuff before getting to the main event. Journalists calling out for their imprisoned friends to be released; scholarship kids shining big smiles; impressionist Matt Friend making a joke about the guy who self-immolated outside Donald Trump’s New York trial. (Classy!) But people were, presumably, mostly watching for the traditional comedy sets that wrap up the night: A joke-heavy speech from the President, and then a follow-up from professionally funny person Jost.

Uncharacteristically, though, Biden got the biggest laugh of the night, to our minds. Not one of his many digs at Trump—although pointing out that one of the differences between them was that “My vice president actually endorses me” wasn’t bad. No, what caught us was a surprisingly sharp “Lauren Boebert caught vaping and handjob-ing at Beetlejuice ” reference, noting that Congress can’t just be “political theater,” because “they’d have thrown out Lauren Boebert a long time ago.” Kudos to whichever White House staffer gave, but did not explain, that particular gag to the president.

Jost, meanwhile, seemed distinctly out of his element without a desk (or Michael Che) to hide behind, fielding tons of jokes about his far-more-famous wife (who was in attendance) and swinging weakly at print journalists. (Correcting himself, at one point, after addressing the New York Times as “Wordle.”) Working his way through the usual array of “Biden is old” jokes, he got off only a handful of genuinely cutting lines. (“Like many of you here tonight,” he noted at one point, “I pretend to do news on TV.”) His best material was lobbed at the familiar, very mockable target of Trump, with Jost’s biggest line of the night coming when he stated that every court room sketch of Trump at his current trial looks “Like The Grinch had sex with The Lorax.”

Mostly, though, Jost’s material was just toothless, despite a single reference to “dangerous geopolitical hot spots like Columbia University.” If the big appeal of the White House Correspondents Dinner is in seeing a comedian actually speak a little truth to power, Jost mostly passed the buck, instead peddling middle of the road material before ending his whole speech on a slightly mawkish, “I love my grandpa” note. We’d love to tell you it was hilarious, because it’d mean we’d have spent the last half hour of our lives laughing, instead of jotting down about a dozen half-smiles’ worth of jokes. But outside of one other line, comparing Obama and Biden’s first terms—“Obama got Bin Laden, you got O.J.!”—it was just sort of a waste of everyone involved’s presumably very expensive time.
