Are you ready to earn your online nursing degree?

Capstone courses function as a bridge between the end of school and the beginning of a career, allowing nursing students to put what they’ve learned into practice. As the name suggests, students complete capstones toward the end of their nursing training. Not every nursing program requires a capstone, but those that do generally culminate in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) or doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree.

Each nursing program sets their own requirements. While capstone formats differ between programs, they typically consist of an evidence-based practice formal paper or presentation. Students might complete their capstone projects as team leaders, and BSN candidates may present their papers to a faculty panel. Projects could include case studies, program evaluations, and policy analyses.

The focus on evidence-based practice allows students to apply research and experiential evidence toward solving a healthcare problem. For example, candidates may develop intervention strategies that promote health, improve outcomes, enhance quality of life, and foster safe practices for patients.

Capstone goals center on the application of knowledge gained during nursing training programs, including topics related to leadership , management, research, theories, and evidence-based practice, along with the strategies needed to transition from students to baccalaureate-level nurses.

Choosing Your Nursing Capstone Topic

When selecting a capstone topic, students should evaluate their interests, strengths, and weaknesses, along with their chosen nursing specialty area. Luther College recommends that students with lower GPAs and weaker nursing skills consider a basic medical-surgical topic. Those with strong clinical skills and high GPAs might choose emergency or intensive care medicine, although some students might prefer outpatient topics, such as clinical services, long-term care, or public health. However, this is simply an example of one school’s approach, and readers should keep in mind that each school sets its own policies and recommendations.

Asking for guidance from faculty, supervisors, preceptors, and fellow students also helps narrow down capstone topics. Advisors can also provide assistance in choosing an appropriate capstone site, helping with questions of geographical location, facility size, patient population, and care delivery model.

Students develop and learn the skills needed to complete their capstones throughout their training. These include organization and time management, knowledge of evidence-based practice, writing, and critical thinking. Completing Your Nursing Capstone

Capstone formats and completion times widely vary between programs. Students at Luther College and Purdue University Northwest complete their capstones in 4-5 weeks, while Ferris State University specifies a timeframe of 30 hours of online classes and 90 hours of applied project work. Case Western Reserve University’s capstone spans 10 weeks.

Regardless of the program, most students follow a PICO format for project proposal questions of inquiry: population, intervention, comparison or condition, and outcome.

Some universities allow capstone projects to be completed in teams, in which students develop and implement the project. Capstone components may include defining the project and the team leader’s role, selecting team members, and formulating the project plan.

In addition to the skills previously referenced, such as knowledge of evidence-based care, critical thinking, and effective writing, capstone courses hone leadership and management abilities These include mastering therapeutic communication, applying leadership and management concepts, and developing collaborative relationships and working on multidisciplinary teams.

Presenting Your Nursing Capstone

The capstone process culminates in a paper or presentation that measures students’ skills in communication, information dissemination, and application of evidence-based practice skills. Members of the public may attend.

Utilizing the poster format, students commonly use three panels to illustrate: (1) the background, problem, and purpose; (2) methodology; and (3) 2-3 key findings and implications. Students who present using PowerPoint on a laptop or other device should pay attention to time limits, planning for one slide per minute, and verify that equipment and internet connectivity are available.

Visuals like graphs, figures, and bullet points are more effective than large blocks of text . Students should practice presenting in front of others to ensure that they thoroughly know their content and can answer questions. Backing up a copy of a PowerPoint presentation and printing out copies or transparencies guards against last-minute glitches.

How is a Nursing Capstone Graded?

Capstone grading methods differ between programs, with some issuing letter grades and others using a pass/no pass system. Grades typically hinge on a percentage basis of the project’s written sections, the final proposal, and the presentation. Faculty evaluate how students execute the capstone course objectives, which may include the following:

Students’ presentation skill evaluation criteria include exhibiting thorough preparation and knowledge of the subject matter, clear and concise communication, adherence to any time limits, ability to answer questions and cite references, and persuasiveness.

What is the Difference Between a Nursing Capstone and a Thesis?

Students complete capstones individually or in groups, while thesis projects must be done alone. Capstone project time lengths span between four and 12 weeks, while graduate students work on their thesis projects throughout their 2- to 3-year programs. Graduate thesis courses generally take place over 1-2 semesters to keep students on track.

Program Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program prepares students in the science and principles of nursing to provide care for individuals, families, and populations within complex healthcare systems. The BSN curriculum includes courses in the sciences, humanities, and human behavior in addition to the nursing courses. Students learn through a combination of classroom, laboratory, and supervised clinical instruction and graduate with the competencies to provide evidence-based practice care as a generalist nurse. Graduates of the BSN program will be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for registered nurses (NCLEX-RN).

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program: 

  • Apply knowledge from nursing and other disciplines as a basis for clinical judgment, clinical reasoning, and evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrate clinical reasoning and clinical judgment in the delivery of person-centered care to enhance health outcomes across the lifespan.
  • Identify and apply principles of population health, advocacy strategies, and collaborative interdisciplinary team approaches that optimize health outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and populations.
  • Integrate evidence-based interventions into person-centered care.
  • Describe and apply the principles of quality improvement that create a culture of safe, professional nursing practice that optimizes health and protects all.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills as a member of the interprofessional team to optimize the health of individuals, families, and populations within complex healthcare environments.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to economic and social determinants of health necessary to provide quality person-centered care within complex healthcare delivery systems.
  • Utilize information management and care technology systems to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and guide clinical decision-making to support optimal health outcomes.
  • Utilize professional communication to act as an advocate and deliver culturally sensitive person-centered care adhering to ethical and legal frameworks.
  • Identify healthy self-care behaviors and commit to continuous professional growth.

Admissions Information

First-year admission.

Students are not directly admitted to BS1221. Individuals interested in the BSN program should apply to the pre-BSN major (ND1220) and complete specified prerequisite courses required for admission to the BS1221 major.

Requirements for first-year applicants to be considered for the pre-BSN (ND1220) include:

  • Graduation from high school with a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4-point scale
  • Completed application and admission to Ohio University

BSN (BS1221) selection:

Individuals must apply and meet specific School of Nursing requirements in order to be considered for selective admission into the BSN program (BS1221). Admission to the BS1221 is competitive, and success in the pre-BSN major (ND1220) does not guarantee admission to the BSN program. A minimum college grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 and other criteria are required for consideration of admission to the BSN major. Meeting minimum program requirements does not guarantee admission.  Individuals interested in the BSN program major (BS1221) should speak with a College of Health Sciences and Professions Student Success Advisor or refer to the School of Nursing website for additional program information and specific requirements for admission.

Change of Major Policy

Individuals seeking to change their major to ND1220 (pre-BSN) need to contact the School of Nursing, schedule an advising appointment, and complete the required paperwork.  All applicants must meet specific School of Nursing requirements.

External Transfer Admission

Transfer students are reviewed individually for admission to the BSN major. Transfer Applicants must have:

  • Overall minimum college grade point average of 2.75 on a 4-point scale
  • Accumulated at least 30 credit hours at the undergraduate level

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Graduates are eligible to sit for the registered nursing licensing exam (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed RNs. Upon successful passing of the NCLEX-RN, graduates can be employed in a variety of settings to provide care for individuals, families, and populations within complex healthcare systems. Graduates are prepared to enter master’s or doctoral programs in nursing, which prepare baccalaureate registered nurses for advanced nursing roles.

Ohio University requires completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for conferral of a bachelor’s degree. However, the Nursing Major (B.S.N.) program requires a minimum of 121 semester hours. What are some of the topics we can use? I know the paper lists that we can use patient centered care models, mandatory immunizations, human trafficking, gun control, and mandatory continuing education for nurses,etc. How in the world would we relate gun control to a nursing project? Maybe I'm just confused!

So I wanted to see some of the topics others have used in the past or have thought of. Some of the ones I was thinking was bedside report, implementation of electronic health records, medication scanning. I can't really think of anymore.

I a just starting this class and and I am totally lost. I can't think of a project, everything I come up with winds up in the trash heap! I'm so over this and I haven't really even started. I thought a couple of your ideas were pretty good. How is the class for you so far and do you feel you will actually be able to enable change at your workplace as this class is supposed to facilitate?

I recommend picking a topic you already know a lot about. Trust me, it will make this class more tolerable! You could do topics such as reducing falls, decreasing length of stay, decreased wait times in the ED, bedside reporting etc. I did something along the lines of reducing readmissions (patient and family education, assess pt's availability for resources, and ways to help them get the resources they need). When I took this class last year I did workplace bullying and incivility and how it effects teamwork and collaboration. I tried to institute teaching into yearly competencies about this subject etc

I think a lot of us felt we suffered through trying to pick a topic and follow the instructions early on when they first started this requirement.

I was in the second class to try and work through this and it looks like it's still confusing.

BSN-DNP Program Overview

The advanced nursing degree that prepares you to lead.

Ohio University's Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice (BSN-DNP) program, which began in 2017, is intended to prepare students for advanced nursing roles with a focus on leadership, informatics, health policy and evidence-based practice.

This 70-credit BSN-DNP program allows students to customize their education with specializations in either direct patient care as an advanced practice nurse or indirect patient care as a nurse executive or nurse educator.

BSN-DNP program admission requirements include:

  • Awarded Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from a regionally-accredited institution
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.20 calculated across all transcripts for unconditional admission
  • Official transcripts for all previously attended undergraduate and graduate institutions
  • 3 letters of recommendation from individuals who can evaluate your ability to complete graduate academic work, such as a nurse manager, previous nurse faculty, or supervisor. A minimum of two references should be from individuals prepared at the graduate level. If you are also seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) certificate, one letter should be from an APRN
  • Professional Goals Statement (written in APA sixth edition style) and 1-2 pages in length
  • Resume or CV
  • Resident of and evidence of valid, unrestricted RN licensure in an approved state. A current list of approved states can be found on our DNP admissions page
  • Evidence of at least 2 years of professional experience working as an RN within the last 5 years
  • A web-based admission interview with faculty

Upon admission, students should be prepared to provide documentation of any precepted practicum/clinical hours earned through a graduate nursing program.

Prior to clinical/practicum experiences, students must also provide proof of the following:

  • Specified health status requirements (immunization status, TB screening, etc. as delineated in the current Graduate Nursing Student Handbook);
  • State and Federal background checks free from disqualifying offenses;
  • Malpractice insurance. Students in the APRN program tracks are required to have nurse practitioner malpractice insurance; students in the Nurse Leader/Executive or Nurse Educator program track are required to have registered nurse malpractice insurance. Insurance provided by the employer is not acceptable.

Dr. Marjorie Vogt graduated from Carlow University, the Ohio State University and Rush University. She is dual-certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Tuition for the BSN-DNP program is $608 per credit for Ohio residents and $627 per credit for non-residents. You'll need to complete 70 credits for a total tuition of $42,560 for Ohio residents, or $43,890 for non-residents.

Tuition for the MSN-DNP program is $648 per credit for Ohio residents and $667 per credit for non-residents. You'll need to complete 36 credits for a total tuition of $23,328 for Ohio residents, or $24,012 for non-residents.

Yes, the BSN-DNP and MSN-DNP programs accept up to 9 transfer credits. It may be possible to transfer previous graduate credits to meet the requirements of our programs. There are limitations to the number, age, and types of credits that students may transfer to meet requirements. It is also possible to “waive” certain courses based on previous coursework; however, if a required course is waived, students may need to take an additional course to meet the required credit hours for graduation.

The BSN-DNP and MSN-DNP programs offer two specializations: direct patient care as an advanced practice nurse, and indirect patient care as a nurse executive or nurse educator. Upon graduation, students will have earned the DNP and a graduate certificate in their specialty focus, if applicable, for eligibility to complete a national certification examination.

There are 1,000 clinical hours required to complete the BSN-DNP and MSN-DNP programs. These hours are integrated into coursework and project development, implementation, and evaluation:

  • For MSN-DNP students, a “gaps analysis” is conducted on clinical/practice hours completed in previous graduate coursework to determine additional clinical/practice hours needed
  • For the BSN-to-DNP student, the number of clinical/practice hours is 1,000 hours post-baccalaureate

Clinical practice hours are dependent on the course objectives. Clinical practice hours are faculty-supervised, in collaboration with a preceptor or mentor, and are individualized based on the program of study. Faculty work closely with students in the selection of a preceptor-mentor and clinical setting.

Fellers Foundation grant to enhance recreation opportunities

Zanesville - SLS Capstone 2024

The New Concord Area Arts and Recreation District (NCAARD), in collaboration with the Village of New Concord and the 2024 Ohio University Sport & Lifestyle Studies (SLS) Capstone class, is thrilled to announce the receipt of a grant from the Robert E. and Leona L. Fellers Foundation for $2,000 to introduce the sport of pickleball to the New Concord area.

Pickleball, an exciting sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, is rapidly gaining popularity nationwide, with over 1,000 new pickleball locations established in the past year. This grant will fund the addition of pickleball markings and equipment to an existing basketball court in New Concord. The court will feature easily moveable nets, ensuring it remains a versatile space for both basketball and pickleball. Additionally, NCAARD will offer instructional clinics to introduce this engaging sport to the community. Thanks to the generous support from the Fellers Foundation, NCAARD will also purchase paddles and balls for community members to borrow.

The grant application was developed and submitted by the Sport and Lifestyle Studies (SLS) students from Ohio University's Eastern, Lancaster, and Zanesville Regional campuses. The SLS program is a versatile major that prepares students to promote recreation and well-being for people of all ages. This service-learning project enabled these students, all passionate about physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, to enhance outdoor recreation options in the New Concord area. The new pickleball court is set to become a community hub, encouraging physical activity and fostering community engagement among residents of all ages.

Equipping students for success is a goal of Cedarville University’s industrial and innovative design (IID) program. As the only program of its kind at any private Christian university in the nation, Cedarville’s IID program gives students the opportunity to benefit from senior capstone projects with national brands, including Chick-fil-A and Answers in Genesis. 

Since the program began in 2010, IID students have partnered with organizations in real-life projects that enhance the students’ learning and benefit a national business. 

ICC Capstones

Meanwhile, Answers in Genesis — a recent partner with the IID program — partnered with Cassie Cunningham (Birmingham, Alabama) to design a way to meet the diverse needs of parents of young children, individuals with limited mobility and children with sensory needs at its Creation Museum in Kentucky. Still conceptual at present but a potential future reality, Cunningham’s design, “the Meadows Family Care Center,” features four rooms: the main room, a calming room, a nursing mother’s room and a family care restroom.

“I have put major emphasis on taking cues from God’s creation in my designs because nature and natural design has been proven to reduce stress, strengthen cognitive functions, improve mood and wellbeing and even expedite healing,” Cunningham said. “I wanted to balance biophilic design (nature in architecture) with cleanliness and safety because those are some of parents’ primary concerns.” 

A second project with Answers in Genesis features Tim Comstock (Marysville, Ohio) and his work on the Ark Encounter’s admissions process. The current confusing but temporary building and process led Comstock on a quest to design a new admissions building, design a masterplan for a new, more efficient parking lot layout, and alter the bus path to better integrate with the admissions building and make the process easier and faster for both the staff and guests. As future buildings will feature the architectural style of the old Phoenician port city of Tangier, Morocco, Comstock incorporated this style in his design. 

“The primary focus of this project was to create a fresh concept so that Answers in Genesis could have a unique but thought-out direction that could inform their design process and future decisions,” Comstock said. “At the very least, in a few years I’ll be able to know exactly what parts of my senior capstone made it into a park that hundreds and hundreds of people experience every day.”

The three-month capstone projects culminated with seniors presenting their work to representatives of Chick-fil-A and Answers in Genesis April 29 and 30. 

Cedarville’s industrial and innovative design program is offered in partnership with the International Center for Creativity (ICC), an independent design studio with innovative education programs. A tenet of the ICC is experiential learning, leading to frequent partnerships with outside companies. 

The ICC has partnered with Chick-fil-A eight times for senior projects, creating a great relationship that leads to internships and job positions for ICC students with the fast-food giant. 

Answers in Genesis is a new partnership for the ICC, established this year by The Graduate School at Cedarville University. The head of industrial design at Answers in Genesis requested a partnership with Cedarville’s program, leading to the capstone partnerships this year. 

“Our students work hard and provide our partners with solid solutions,” said Jim Stevenson , program director for the industrial and innovative design major and president of the ICC. “It’s humbling for them to realize they’re engaging in real-world problem solving.”

To encourage student participation in campus events, the group created a rewards app that allows users to earn points by attending Mizzou events. The app allows points to be traded for prizes or rewards and creates a leaderboard of students who attend the most events.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd. 

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that. 

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role. 

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
