Ph.D. Urdu or Doctor of Philosophy in Urdu is a Doctorate Urdu language course. Ph.D. program is a four or five years course depending on the submission of the thesis at the end. Urdu is a language that studies literature, linguistics and philosophy of it. Students under this degree are required to prepare a detailed thesis on any of the topics such as Urdu Poetry, Drama, Urdu Fiction, Literary Criticism and Urdu Literary History, etc. The duration for the course in some cases may vary depending on the respective institute. Ph.D. is a deep study of the subject concerned. After passing the course they have so many careers in various places.

Ph.D. Urdu Eligibility

• Aspiring candidates having 2nd class Master’s Degree in the subject concerned with at least 55% marks with two years teaching experience in a degree college or two years of teaching/research experience in the subject concerned in a University department or a recognized institute of higher learning or qualified in UGC National level test for JRF/Lectureship. OR
• They should have M.Phil. Degree in the subject concerned and second class Master's Degree in the subject concerned with at least 55% marks. OR
• Also, applicants who have 1 st class Master’s degree in any subject with 2 years of teaching experience in a degree college or two years of teaching/research experience in the subject concerned or closely related area in a University department or recognised institute of higher learning or a minimum of 3 publications in a recognised refereed journal in the subject in which admission is sought.

REFERENCE COLLECTION

Reference collection as self descriptive is only for reference use, this may not be borrowed. This collection is in an Air conditioned hall located at the Ground Floor of the Library. It has a book collection of more than 18,000 volumes approx. The reference collection has many valuable sources like, encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia Americana, Chemical Abstracts, Encyclopedia of Social Sciences, Encyclopedia of Seerat, Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science, Statesman Year book etc.

THESES COLLECTION

Punjab University Library is a depositary library of Thesis approved by University of the Punjab. The lists of theses submitted in the library for PhD degrees are listed here online. click the link to access the lists.

CHINESES COLLECTION

Besides other collections, library has a gifted collection from China, the books in this collection are about China both in English and Chinese languages. The collection is placed at the first floor of the library in General Collection. But the books of this collection are not issued.

REPORTS COLLECTION

Besides other collections, Punjab University Library has United Nations, Pre-partition Indian government reports, imperial gazettes of India and Pakistan government reports, Council of Islamic Ideology reports, EU Collection, Human rights reports, Punjab University Syndicate Proceedings (1882 to onward), Univeristy Calander (1896-2002) and Punjab University Result Gazettes( B.A/B.Sc). There are about 25,000 United Nations publications and nearly 10,000 Indian and Pakistan government reports.

Punjab University Library is a big repository for the valuable donations/personal collections. The use of these collections is restricted only to the library premises. H.M. PERCEIVAL

Ch. shahab-ud-din, maulvi mahbub alam, dr. a.c. woolner, maulvi mahboob hussain azad, pirzada muhammad hussain arif, b.m. dattatrya kaifi, hafiz muhammad shairani, hakim abdul majed atiqui, prof. siraj-ud-din azar, dr. prof. muhammad iqbal, abdul aziz maimon, allama asghar ali ruhi, hakim musa amritsari, mian mohammed din kaleem, prof. abdul qayyum, prof. dr. yar mohammed, mian jamil ahmad sharaqpuri, syed sibt-ul hassan zaigham, atta ullah zafar ar warsi, prof muhammad iqbal mujaddidi.

Professor Muhammad Iqbal Mujjadadi donates old manuscripts to Punjab University Library in 2014 but inaugurated on March 26, 2015, Renowned historian, researcher, author and former Chairman of History Department, Government Islamia College Civil Lines Prof Muhammad Iqbal Mujjadadi has donated rare manuscripts, unique royal titles and thousands of books worth crores of rupees to Punjab University Library.

The treasurer of manuscripts and books donated by Prof Iqbal Maujjadadi included over 1000 one thousand manuscripts, rare magazines, photographs and over 10,500 books worth crores of rupees. The collection also includes the oldest manuscript published in Samarkand in 8th Hijri century titled (Kanz-al-Ibad fe Sharh-al-Oraad) (Hazrat Bahauddin Zakriya Multani) and initial correspondence and Royal orders with regard to Masjid Wazir Khan.

The collection also includes dozens of exclusive and unique royal titles which are not available in other parts of the world. A few manuscripts include valuable and unique information regarding Lahore city. It is pertinent to mention here that Prof Muhammad Iqbal Mujjadadi has collected these manuscripts and books from various parts of the world.

PROF AFTAB ASGHAR

This is a valuable personal collection donated by professor Khalida Aftab, begum of late professor Aftab Asghar, consists of more than 4000 books and 38 manuscripts, mainly Persian collection but possesses Urdu Arabic and English books as well.

Dr. WAHEED QURESHI

Dr. Waheed Qureshi (1925-2009) was the professor, critic and poet of Urdu in University of the Punjab; his manuscript collection, consists of 137 manuscripts, (in 80volumes) has been purchased in 2010 from Mrs. Waheed Qureshi for Punjab University Library.

NASREEN AKHTAR

Former Principal, Oriental College, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Dr. Nasreen Akhtar donated her books and precious manuscripts to the library in November 2011, it contains 6 manuscripts.

MANUSCRIPTS COLLECTION

The Manuscript Section in the Punjab University Library was established on July 31, 1920. Total collection of this section is estimated to contain more than 24,000 titles. The number of manuscripts in Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Turkish, Punjabi and other local languages is about 11,400 while collection of manuscripts in Sanskrit, Hindi, etc. is 8,671 volumes. This is the largest collection of manuscripts in Pakistan.

There are 65200 bound volumes of journals on various disciplines both in foreign and local languages. Research oriented journals both local and foreign are subscribed with the approval of the Heads of University Teaching Departments.

The Journals cover different academic aspects of science technology social sciences and humanities. Table of contents (TOC) service is provided to all departments, when a new foreign research journal is received in the library the photocopy of its TOC is sent to relevant departments. If the teachers are interested in any article the free photocopy is provided to them. It is very regular Selective dissemination of information (SDI) service.

NEWSPAPERS COLLECTION

Punjab University Library has a huge archive of local newspapers. Local newspapers in Urdu, Punjabi and English are subscribed. Khaleej Times, an international newspaper is also acquired. When a volume of a journal or file of a newspaper is completed, it is got bound. The Library has maintained files from 1954 onward of Nawa-I-Waqt and Pakistan Times. Bound volumes of the journals are arranged on racks in classified order and fresh issues are displayed alphabetically by title. Journals and newspapers are not issued, but photocopy of the required articles is allowed under the rules.

MICROFILMS COLLECTION

Punjab University Library has a rich collection Microfilms at Multimedia and Microfilming Section of the Library. It holds 1273 microfilm roles of differenet historic documents and manuscripts including a rich collection of Daily DAWN during 1941-1947. It also has collections on , Statesman, New Delhi, Hindustan Times, New Delhi. Moreover it has a historic collection of Pioneer, Allahabad 1870-1888 and Comrade, Delhi, 1913-1914.

Chacha Chhakkan, an unforgettable comic character created by Syed Imtiyaz Ali Taj, is etched deep into our collective consciousness. It all started with English writer Jerome K. Jerome’s famous novel ‘Three Men in A Boat’ in which a character named ‘Uncle Podger’ humorously struggles to hang a portrait on the wall. Later, in 1944, the editor of the magazine ‘Nairang-e-Khayaal’ requested Imtiyaz Ali Taj to translate this section of the book for the magazine’s Eid issue. Instead of translating the section, Imtiyaz Ali rewrote it afresh, and Uncle Podger came to be known in Urdu as Chacha Chhakan. Owning to the great reception of Urdu readers, more such columns were demanded, and thus, about ten such articles came to being in which facets of Chacha Chhakkan's private life are humorously depicted, too. It’s also noteworthy, that recently Danish Iqbal wrote a play with Chacha Chhakkan as the central character, which has been staged well several times.

The word Eid means the day of happiness that returns again and again. Eid-ul-Fitr, an important Islamic festival, is often referred to as “MiThi Eid” in India. This festival is celebrated all over the world on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal after the fasting of Ramazan. On this day Muslims also give away ‘Fitrah’ or alms to the poor, and that’s why the occasion is called Eid-ul-Fitr. In Urdu poetry, there is such an abundance of couplets that center around “Eid ka Chand dikhna” and “Eid Ke Din Gale Milna” that an entire book could be compiled around them. Eid Ka Chand tum ne dekh liyaa Chand Ki Eid ho gayi hogii “Eid Ka Chand Hona” is a proverb quite common in everyday parlance that means to meet after a long time. Wonder what “Eidi” is all about? Well, the bounties or gifts offered by the elders of the house or relatives to children are known as Eidi. Additionally, a Nazm or couplet that Ustads wrote on fancy-pages and presented to their students just a day before Eid as greetings of this auspicious event in exchange of a tutelage was also known as Eidi. Moreover, the fancy-pages upon which these verses were written were called Eidi as well. Also, fruits, sweets, and cash offerings that are exchanged among in-laws are known as Eidi, too.

Ever wondered what’s the connection between the word ‘Pahar’ and ‘Pahre-Daar’? In ancient India, ‘Pahar’ used to be the unit of keeping time - with each day consisting of 8 Pahars, and each Pahar as long as 3 hours. During each Pahar, a ‘Pahre-Daar’ would be performing watchmanship, and at the end of each hour, he would strike a metal bell and announce that he was on guard; besides, it was also the way to know what time it was. ‘Pahar’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Prahar’. The word ‘Pahre-Daar’, however, has now been limited to meanings such as watchman, guard, or sentry. In Urdu poetry, the phrases ‘Aath Pahar’, ‘Raat Ke Pichhle Pahar’, and ‘Sih-Pahar’ are abundantly found. Like: sih-pahar hī se koī shakl banātī hai ye shaam ḳhud jo rotī hai mujhe bhī to rulātī hai ye shaam

In Persian, ‘Sih’ means three. And, the third Pahar of a day is also known as ‘Sih-Pahar’.

The Hindustani tradition of celebrating the first roza (fast) of a child in the month of Ramadan is called Roza-Kushai. The word Kushaaii means to open, begin or to initiate. When a child fasts for the first time in their life, it is honoured by inviting friends and family for iftar on that particular day. The Roza-Kushai event is celebrated by making new clothes for the child and friends and family present gifts and money to the child as well. Every child remembers this day for the rest of their lives.

Ever wondered what is ‘Gulabi Urdu’, and what is its connection with Mulla Ramuzi (1896-1952)? Well, it is noted as one of Urdu language’s standout prose works in which Mulla Ramuzi has parodied the difficult, word-to-word Urdu translations of the old times. Born Sadiq Irshad, Mulla Ramuzi, was a well-known journalist, satirist, and poet from Bhopal. So unique was his style of highlighting political and social issues in his Gulabi Urdu that the British government’s press act seldom caught hold of it in the newspapers, while Urdu knowers could wittily made sense of it. But in addition to this style, he also wrote satirical and humorous articles on common people's issues in simple language which became very popular. In Bhopal, the office of the Madhya Pradesh Urdu Academy is located in the building named, ‘Mulla Ramuzi Sanskriti Bhavan’. Nowadays, the term ‘Gulabi Urdu’ has also come to be known as the confluence of regional vocab and accents in the Urdu language.

Introduction

The Department of Urdu has been offering MPhil Urdu since 1987. Admissions for MPhil Urdu are announced in Spring semester (commenced from 1st February) every year.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have Master Degree in MA Urdu with at least 2nd division or equivalent qualification. Applicants have to pass concerned subject test, will be conducted by the Department. Only successful candidates will be called for interview.

Selection Process

Selection of the candidates will be made strictly on the basis of merit/criteria laid down by the Department/ University.

Teaching methodology.

The University allots study centre and tutors for the students to get guideline accordingly. A student has to secure passing marks in assignments as well as in final exams to successfully complete concerned educational programme.
