b. Muscular Endurance (Push Ups for-Boys, Modified Push Ups for Girls)
Procedure for 50 mts Dash: The test involves running a single maximum sprint over 50 meters, with the time recorded. A thorough warm up should be given, including some practice starts and accelerations. Start from a stationary standing position (hands cannot touch the ground), with one foot in front of the other. The front foot must be behind the starting line. Once the subject is ready and motionless, the starter gives the instructions “Set” then “Go”. On the instruction “Go”, the participant has to start sprinting.
Scoring: The time taken to cover 50 meters is recorded to the nearest two decimal places. The timing starts from the first movement (if using a stopwatch) or when the timing system is triggered, and finishes when the chest crosses the finish line and/or the finishing timing gate is triggered.
Procedure for Partial Curl Up: The starting position is lying on the back with the knees flexed and feet 12 inches from the buttocks. The feet cannot be held or rest against an object. The arms are extended and are rested on the thighs. The head is in a neutral position. The subject curls up with a slow controlled movement, until the student’s shoulders come off the mat two inches, then back down again.
One complete curl-up is completed every three seconds (1.5 seconds up and 1.5 seconds down, with no hesitation), and are continued until exhaustion (e.g. the subject cannot maintain the rhythm). There is no pause in the up or down position; the curl-ups should be continuous with the abdominal muscles engaged throughout.
Scoring: Record the total number of curl ups in 30 seconds. . The completion of one complete curl up will be count as one. Only correctly performed curl ups should be counted – the sit up is not counted if the shoulders are not raised up two inches; the head touches the mat; the heels come off the mat and or the student is off cadence.
Question 34. Define Flexibility. Explain its types and any two methods to develop flexibility. [5] OR With the help of suitable examples, discuss the application of Newton’s Laws of Motion in sports. Answer: Flexibility is the capacity to move the body joints to a maximum range of motion without excessive tension. Types of Flexibility
1. Passive flexibility: Passive flexibility is the ability to do movements with greater amplitude by means of external assistance. E.g: With the help of a partner doing stretching exercises.
2. Active Flexibility: Active flexibility is the ability to perform movement with greater range, without external help, e.g., the sportsman himself stretches a joint with no external help. There are two types of active flexibility. They are: (a) Static flexibility (b) Dynamic Flexibility.
Two methods to develop flexibility are Ballistic method and Slow Stretch and Hold method. 1. Ballistic Method: The name ballistic method means stretching movement is done with a swing. Ballistic method means a joint is expanded steadily to its utmost range.
2. Slow Stretch and Hold Method: By the given name of this method, we can comprehend the meaning of the slow stretch and hold method. It means before going back to the original position, the joint is gradually stretched to the maximum limit and is held there for a 3-8 seconds.
Everything that moves is governed by laws of motion formulated by Sir Isaac Newton. Three laws formulated by Newton are as follows: 1. Newton’s First Law (Law of Inertia): “A body at rest will remain in rest and a body in motion will remain in motion at the same speed and in the same direction unless acted on by some external force.”
Example: A soccer ball in the field remains stationery until it is kicked or some external force is applied. A moving soccer ball will keep moving unless external force of friction of the field is applied or someone stops it.
2. Newton’s Second Law ( Law of Acceleration): “A change in velocity (acceleration) of an object is directly proportional to the force producing it and inversely proportional to its mass.”
Example: In shot put, the more force is applied on the object, the more will be the distance covered. Lighter the object, the distance covered will be more. Heavier the’object the distance covered will be less.
3. Newton’s Third Law (Law of Reaction): “The law of action and reaction states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
Example: While dribbling in a basketball, a player exerts the force on the ball and the ball strikes on the floor with a force and bounces up with an equal force from the floor.
