News Funimation Streams English Dubs for The Case Study of Vanitas, Magatsu Wahrheit Anime

The English cast for The Case Study of Vanitas includes:

David Wald is directing the English dub . Victor Acosta is the lead ADR engineer, and Paul Cline and Jose Sandoval are the assistant ADR engineers. Katelyn Barr is writing the English script, and Bonny Clinkenbeard is supervising. James Baker is in charge of ADR prep. James Tipps is the mix engineer.

Jill Harris directed the English dub , which was recorded by Studio Nano . Michelle Rojas was the assistant director, and she and Justin Rojas were the co-producers. Emily Neves wrote the script., Austin Sisk was in charge of ADR prep. Paul Cline , Brian Castillo , Jose Sandoval , and James Baker were the ADR engineers. Sally Haden , Timothy Johnson , and Apphia Yu were the production assistants.

The Case Study of Vanitas premiered on July 2. Funimation is streaming the anime as part of the summer anime season.

The series will run for two cours (quarters of a year), split in half. The second half will premiere at a date to be announced later.

Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut, and it describes the first volume:

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

Tomoyuki Itamura ( Nisemonogatari , Owarimonogatari , Tsukimonogatari ) is directing the anime at BONES , and Deko Akao ( Noragami , Snow White with the Red Hair ) is overseeing the series scripts. Yoshiyuki Ito ( Concrete Revolutio , Carole & Tuesday ) is the character designer and chief animation director.

Funimation describes the story:

Based on the popular RPG game from KLab . In the Wahrheit Empire, humanity's spirit remains fragmented from a disaster in the past where many lives were lost to bloodthirsty monsters who were once summoned. But the fate of the capital is about to drastically change when shy transport worker Inumael and naive Empire soldier Leocadio get caught up in a smuggling incident.

Naoto Hosoda ( The Devil Is a Part-Timer! , The Future Diary , Shuffle!) directed the anime at Yokohama Animation Lab ( Miru Tights , Starlight Promises ), and Hosoda also supervised the series scripts and co-wrote them with Yūichirō Momose ( Africa Salaryman , Infinite Dendrogram , My First Girlfriend is a Gal ). Akiko Sugizono designed the characters, and Hirotsugu Kakoi directed the art.

The Case Study of Vanitas has been airing for less than a month but it already looks like one of the most promising cases of the Spring 2021 anime season. The series will run in two 12-episode cours and it's amazingly good-looking, with mysterious characters and what looks like an intriguing plot. So far, two streaming platforms, Hulu and Funimation , have made Vanitas no Carte part of their libraries – but will it be dubbed in English, and when?

First, a short overview; The Case Study of Vanitas is directed by Tomoyuki Itamura based on a manga by Jun Mochizuki who's also the creator of the shonen Pandora Hearts , a beloved shonen manga, so there's a recipe for success already, according to some.

In this fantasy mystery show, we follow Noe, a young vampire in search of the Book of Vanitas; a grimoire created by a vengeful vampire of the Blue Moon, who wasn't accepted by the mainstream vampire society, of the Red Moon.

Early in his journey, Noe means a human named Vanitas after the writer of the grimoire, which he possesses. Vanitas, who considers himself a doctor for vampires, is able to use the Book of Vanitas to save vampires whose true name has been corrupted – an affliction that causes a bloodlust unbecoming to vampires in this particular society.

As Vanitas and Noe team up to save more vampires, they come across a vampire known as Charlatan, who might be responsible for this mess in the first place… but looming above this all is Noe's revelations – made in the first episode – that he had to kill Vanitas at the end of their joint journey.

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there is no confirmation as to when The Case Study of Vanitas will be dubbed in English. But if we were to make a prediction from experience, we'd say that things don't look bad for Vanitas no Carte. It's been picked up by Funimation , which is well-known for its quality dubs, and based on a rather successful manga.

Taking this into account, we'd assume that an English dub of Vanitas no Carte might be announced soon. We'll update this space once we have definitive information.

August 2021 UPDATE : from Friday August 6 onwards, dubbed episodes of The Case Study of Vanitas will be released weekly. The dub of Episode 1 was already premiered, and you can stream it on Funimation!

Meanwhile, the dub for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2 Part 2 was been confirmed and we're awaiting its release!

The Case Study of Vanitas

There once lived a vampire known as Vanitas, hated by his own kind for being born under a blue full moon, as most arise on the night of a crimson one. Afraid and alone, he created the "Book of Vanitas," a cursed grimoire that would one day take his vengeance on all vampires; this is how the story goes at least. Vanitas no Carte follows Noé, a young man travelling aboard an airship in 19th century Paris with one goal in mind: to find the Book of Vanitas. A sudden vampire attack leads him to meet the enigmatic Vanitas, a doctor who specializes in vampires and, much to Noé's surprise, a completely ordinary human. The mysterious doctor has inherited both the name and the infamous text from the Vanitas of legend, using the grimoire to heal his patients. English Dub Review: The Case Study of Vanitas “Love”

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Now that the crazy crashed party is in the past, Vanitas and Noe are living with Luca’s rich uncle and spending time with their friends while they recuperate. Vanitas is totally in love with Jeanne, but denies their romance in public in front of Luca by claiming she was not in her right mind when she sucked his blood. Meanwhile, Noe wrestles with his own feelings as he ponders the concept of love.

The eighth episode of Vanitas opens with a confused Noe asking Vanitas to explain what love is, and that cringy interaction really set the tone for the rest of this week’s proceedings. The imaginatively titled Love is one of the slowest paced episodes I’ve seen of the show to date. There’s really not much that happens apart from everyone having a lot of romantic tension with everyone else. But hey, I guess that’s better than talking through a lot of exposition! (Although there is plenty of that, too.)

After the weird flash forward opening of Noe’s question to Vanitas, the episode starts out with a scene in which Luca, Jeanne, Noe, and Vanitas are eating a meal together in a fancy restaurant. Everything is going about as well as can be expected when Vanitas suddenly gets all weird and reveals that Jeanne has sucked his blood by showing everyone her mark on his shoulder. She gets all flustered and denies it while Luca is just shocked and offended. In the end, Vanitas backs down by saying it wasn’t her choice because she was in a magical kind of daze thanks to the curse bearers, but then Jeanne drags him outside to talk and Vanitas confirms that his story was just a bunch of bunk to save face.

The two of them have one of the most drawn out exchanges of flirting I’ve ever seen — if you can call it flirting. Vanitas just keeps acting creepy and saying dumb things in the most sleazy manner possible while Jeanne is a brick wall. They have negative romantic chemistry and that made it so bad to watch that it was almost good? Later on, Vanitas admits to Noe that he knows Jeanne will never reciprocate his feelings, but that he prefers it that way because he wouldn’t be interested in the type of person who’s interested in him. Yeesh.

Vanitas and Jeanne might not have the greatest it factor in the world, but Noe and Dom get to show off their own talents in this episode too! She starts sucking on his throat and then he ends up drinking the blood from her hand at the same time. I just—this show is something else. At least Dom and Noe seem to fit better together than Vanitas and Jeanne, even if that’s not saying much.

And of course, since this is an episode all about love, the show staff just had to throw in some bait for the Vanitas/Noe shippers out there, giving them a short dancing scene at the end because Vanitas is “too scared” to dance with Jeanne because he’s afraid of stepping on her feet. With so many weird couples and relationships it felt like this episode was just throwing things at the wall in hopes of something sticking. Blood! Unrequited love! Dancing! You’ll like one of these things for sure! Sadly, I didn’t really like anything that this episode gave us. None of these characters have much chemistry and they all act super melodramatic and dumb all the time (especially Noe). I definitely did not love Love .

Short of getting Roiland back, which I'm sure isn't going to happen, I don't even think they could get much better than the new voices from the previous season. And the ratings for season 7 weren't much lower on average than for season 6; it was pretty much just a normal season-to-season drop that most likely would have happened regardless.

I mean, look at the actual averages:

Season 1 - 1.57 million viewers Season 2 - 1.97 million viewers Season 3 - 2.33 million viewers Season 4 - 1.52 million viewers Season 5 - 0.96 million viewers Season 6 - 0.56 million viewers Season 7 - 0.42 million viewers

Ever since season 3, it had been having steep drops even with Roiland still involved; the season 6 to 7 drop is actually the smallest-percentage drop it's had since it started dropping, and if anything it's possible that changing the voice actors actually *boosted* interest a bit and prevented it from dropping even more.

I extremely highly doubt they would sue over this; a win on their part would effectively establish that memes aren't fair use, and that would get them an insane level of backlash.
