O Allah, as for my actions that have pleased You in this year and for which reward has been promised, then I ask You O Allah! O Most Generous, O Owner of Majesty and Reverance, that You accept them from me. And do not dash my hopes in You. O Most Generous! And Allah, the Most Exalted, bless our Master Muhammad (pbuh) and his family and companions and grant them peace.

  • Sayyidina Nuh (as) and his companions in the ark were saved by Allah (aj).
  • Sayyidina Ibrahim (as): Allah extinguished the fire in which Sayyidina Ibrahim (as) was thrown by Nimrod.
  • Allah (swt) spoke directly to Sayyidina Musa (Moses) (as) and gave him the Commandments.
  • Also on this day, the sea was departed for Sayyidina Musa (as) and the nation of israel was saved from captivity, and Pharoah’s army was destroyed.

Worship Allah (swt) as much as you can on ‘Ashura. Whoever fasts on this day is like one who fasts all his life. Whoever clothes a naked person Allah (swt) will release him from a painful punishment. He who visits a sick person, Allah (swt) will grant him a reward that will not be decreased. Whoever places his hand on an orphan’s head, or feeds a hungry person or gives water to a thirsty person, Allah will feed him a feast from Paradise and will quench his thirst with Salsabil (a wine that does not intoxicate). And who ever makes  ghusl (shower) on this day will enjoy excellent health and freedom from sickness and laziness. Whoever provides generously for his family on this day, Allah (swt) will be generous to him throughout this year. And whoever applies kohl to his eyes will never suffer from eye-sore again, insha’Allah al-’Aziz. “

speech in urdu written about muharram ul haram

It is a tradition and practice of Sultan al Awliya Shaykh ‘Abdullah al Daghistani ( Q ) to make Qurban (sacrifice) two sheeps on the day of ‘Ashura and distribute the meat to the poor and needy. He also did this on the birthday of Shah Naqshband ( Q ).

Days to Fast in Muharram

It is recommended to fast as many days as possible in the holy month of Muharram as mentioned below in Ahadith of Prophet Muhammad (pbuhh), especially fast the following holy days:

  • 9th of Muharram – Night (preceding) of ‘Ashura
  • 10 th of Muharram – Yawm al ‘Ashura
  • Three days in a row; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday , [preferably on the first 10 days of Muharram]

Ahadith About Fasting in Muharram

  • Narrated from Ibn al’Abbas ( radiAllahu ‘Anhu ) that the Prophet ( SallAllahu ʿ alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever fasts the last day of Dhul Hijjah and the first day of  Muharram , he completes a whole year’s worth of fasting in that previous year, and Allah gives him penance for fifty [50] years.”

speech in urdu written about muharram ul haram

  • Narrated from Anas (ra) that the Prophet (saw) said, “Whoever fasts the first Friday of Muharram Allah will forgive his preceding sins, and whoever fasts three days of  Muharram – Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Allah will write for him worship and prayers for nine hundred [900] years.”
  • Narrated from ‘Aisha Umm al Mu’mineen (ra) (mother of the believers) that the Prophet ( SallAllahu ʿ alayhi wa sallam) said, “Whoever fasts the first ten days up till ‘Ashura , he will inherit the Paradise al-Firdaus.”
  • In another hadith the Prophet ( SallAllahu ʿ alayhi wa sallam ) said, “Distinguish yourselves from (others) by fasting either the day before ‘Ashura or the day after it as well.” (Some scholars especially recommends to fast the day before Ashura (9 th of Muharram)
  • Fasting of ‘Ashura is Sunnah Mu’akkadah, that which is highly desired. Prophet ( SallAllahu ʿ alayhi wa sallam ) said, “Whoever fasts the ‘Ashura (10 th Muharram), Allah will write for him a thousand [1000] wishes and a thousand years of age, and will grant him the reward of a thousand martyrs, and will write for him the reward of Isma`il (as), and writes for him seventy [70] palaces in paradise, and makes his flesh forbidden from the hellfire.”
  • In another hadith the Prophet ( SallAllahu ʿ alayhi wa sallam ) said, “Whoever fasts the ‘ Ashura , he will be granted the reward of a thousand angels. And whoever recites “ Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad ” a thousand [1000] times on the day of ‘ Ashura , Allah will glance at him with the Eyes of Mercy, and will write him from amongst the Siddiqqin [The Truthful].”

There is no refuge and no safety from Allah (AJ) except in Him.  Glorious is Allah (AJ), (He is declared so) as many as there be even (numbers) and as many as there be odd, and as many as there be perfect words of His; glory be to Him for them all. We ask of You (our Lord) for safety, by Your mercy, O You who is the most merciful of all those who show mercy.  “Sufficient for us is Allah (AJ), and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs” (Family of ‘Imran 3:173 ). The very best master and the very best supporter! And there is no power and no strength except in Allah, the High, the Great! May the grace of Allah (AJ), the Exalted, be upon our Master Muhammad (pbuh) and upon his holy family and his holy companions, and upon the believers, and upon those who submit (in Islam), as much as there be atoms in existence and as much as there be things known to Allah; and all praise is due to Him, Lord of the Worlds.

12 Veils of Light in 12 months of Islamic Hijri Calendar

Inna ‘iddatash shuhoori ‘indal laahis naa ‘ashara shahran fee Kitaabil laahi yawma khalaqas samaawaati wal arda minhaaa arba’atun hurum…” (Surat Tawbah)

The number of months in the sight of Allah is twelve (in a year)― so ordained by Him the day He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are sacred…(The Repentance 9:36)

Imam Ali says, “The Prophet was once asked about the Imams while I was in his presence. He answered: I swear by the sky, [displaying] the Zodiacal signs (a reference to 85:1). Their number is the same number of the signs of the Zodiac. I swear by the Lord of the nights, days, and months their number is the same as the number of the months. The companion said: Who are they O messenger of Allah? So the Prophet (pbuh) placed his hand on my head and said: The first of them is this (Imam Ali) and the last of them is Al-Mahdi. Whoever supports them has supported me, who ever opposes them opposes me, whoever loves them loves me, whoever disdains them has disdained me, whoever rejects them has rejected me, and whoever acknowledges them has acknowledged me. Through them Allah protects His religion, expands His lands, sustains His people, brings down the drops of the sky, and the blessings of the earth emerge. They are my trustees and successors and the leaders and masters of the believers.

Entry way to the Divine before the Bismillah

And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, “ I will not give up [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seashore (until) I spend years and years in travel. ” (Holy Quran, The Cave 18:60)

The ninth stage is to return to your Cave, as Allah mentioned in Surat al-Kahf (The Cave),

وَإِذِ اعْتَزَلْتُمُوهُمْ وَمَا يَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا اللَّـهَ فَأْوُوا إِلَى الْكَهْفِ يَنشُرْ‌ لَكُمْ رَ‌بُّكُم مِّن رَّ‌حْمَتِهِ وَيُهَيِّئْ لَكُم مِّنْ أَمْرِ‌كُم مِّرْ‌فَقًا ١٦ “ When ye turn away from them and the things they worship other than Allah, betake yourself to the Cave: your Lord will shower His mercies on you …” [The Cave 18:16]

“The Cave is the Divine Presence. Here one utters the cherished prayer of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: Ilahi anta maqsudi wa ridhaka matlubi (‘O God, You are my destination and Your Pleasure is what I seek.’ The heart, as it cycles between the cessation and restoration of its pumping, exists at the level of the Essence of the Divine Presence. Because that Divine Essence is the source of all created beings, that heart will be at one with every minutest creation in this universe. The heart which has reached the secrets of the nine points will be able to see everything, hear everything, know everything, taste everything, sense everything, ‘Until He will be the ears with which he hears, the eyes with which he sees, the tongue with which he speaks, the hand with which he grasps, and the feet with which he walks. He will be رَبَانِيْ Rabbani ( Lordly), he only needs to say to a thing كُنِ فَيَكُونْ kun Fayakun (Be! and it will be).”

Created Through the Light of Muhammad

Praise be to Allah, the Exalted, the Wise; He who created man for Himself, possesses the entire universe.

Oh ye wishing to apprehend the divine secrets! Know then that Allah Almighty laid in the Prophet Muhammad {s} the base for the edifice of the prophets (on all of whom be peace), and that in him He would complete it; and to him He revealed the Glorious Book of the Quran. In it He has made plain his authority, and He has described him in all the holy books, the Torah (Old Testament), the Zabur (Psalms), the Injil (New Testament)and the Furqan (the Quran).

He has made him perfect by giving him the Liwa al Hamd , the Banner of Praise, and the Maqam al Mahmud , the Station of the Praiseworthy, thereby making him the light of both worlds, messenger to both Jinn and men, and enabling him to attain the secrets of proximity to the divine station by two bows’ lengths, and becoming the king of the world. Peace and blessings be upon his pure and meritorious family and his worthy companions who are pursuing the way of greatest righteousness.

Then Allah Almighty spoke thus:

Alif. Lam. Meem . Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Everlasting. He has sent down upon thee the Book with the truth, confirming what was before it, and He sent down the Torah and the Gospel aforetime, as guidance to the people and He sent down Salvation. As for those who disbelieve in God’s Signs, for them awaits a terrible chastisement; God is Almighty, Vengeful. (The House of Imran, 1-4)

  • In a Hadith al Qudsi He has said: “Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe.”
  • It is related by Abdullah bin Abbas that the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: “The very first thing that Allah Almighty ever created was my soul. ”
  • In another place he is reported to have said: “First of all things, the Lord created my mind.”{ AQL عقل }
  • In yet another place he is to have said: “I am from Allah, and the believers are from me.”

How many proofs has He not brought to bear that all existent things are from Him, and that he r, is more excellent than all of creation!

  • The Qutb al-Muhaqqiqin, the most eminent of those who verify, Sayyidina ‘Ali , has said:
  • Before the Lord Almighty created the divine throne and the divine court, Heaven and Hell, the worlds and the skies,
  • He created the light of our Prophet Muhammad {s}.
  • He created his soul three hundred twenty-four years before He created the soul of Adam u.

Thereafter Allah Almighty created twelve veils, namely:

  • The Veil of Power,
  • The Veil of Grandeur,
  • The Veil of Kindness,
  • The Veil of Mercy,
  • The Veil of Bliss,
  • The Veil of Munificence,
  • The Veil of High station/Rank,
  • The Veil of Guidance,
  • The Veil of Prophecy,
  • The Veil of Eminence,
  • The Veil of Awe/Light, and
  • The Veil of Intercession.

Thereafter the Prophet’s soul remained wrapped in the veil of power for twelve thousand years; and for eleven thousand years it remained within the veil of grandeur. For ten thousand years it remained in the veil of kindness; for nine thousand years in the veil of mercy; for eight thousand years in the veil of bliss; for seven thousand years in the veil of munificence; for six thousand years in the veil of high station; for five thousand years in the veil of guidance; for four thousand years in the veil of prophethood; for three thousand years in the veil of eminence; for two thousand years in the veil of awe; and for one thousand years his soul remained in the veil of intercession.

  • After this it stayed on the divine throne for six thousand years.
  • Thereafter the Lord Almighty took it and brought it to the offspring of Adam’s u loins.
  • From Adam’s u loins it passed to Seth (as), from Seth (as) to Idris (as) and from Idris (as) to Nuh (as).
  • Thus it was transferred all the way down to Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib. Finally it came to this world in the city of Mecca.

It is reported that the Lord Almighty created a tree from the light of him who is the pride of the world. This tree had four branches, and it was called the tree of certainty.

  • The light of Muhammad {s} was manifested as a veil made of white pearls.
  • It was placed upon this tree shaped as a peacock, and there it remained for one thousand years,
  • steeped in the remembrance of Allah Almighty.
  • Then the Lord created the mirror of modesty and placed it opposite the peacock.
  • When the peacock looked into the mirror, he beheld a most beautiful face and form in it, and it became shamed before its glorious aspect, and prostrated itself five times.
  • Therefore, five daily prayers became incumbent upon us, from that prostration.
  • The Lord Almighty trained His gaze upon that light once more.
  • From shame, that light began to perspire under the gaze of the Almighty.
  • From the sweat upon his brow, the Almighty then created the angels.
  • From the sweat upon his face, He created the throne, the divine court, the tablets and the pen, the sun, the moon and the stars.
  • From the sweat upon his breast, He created the prophets and the messengers, the holy martyrs and the men of knowledge, and those of righteousness.
  • From the sweat on his feet He then created the worlds and what is contained within them, up to the lowest of all stations of Hell and what is in it.

Then the Lord Almighty spoke: “Oh Muhammad, look before you!” Muhammad  ﷺ did so and he saw that all was replete with light.

  • The light before him was the light of Abu Bakr (as).
  • The light behind him was the light of ‘Umar (as).
  • The light to his right was the light of ‘Uthman (as),
  • the light to his left was the light of ‘Ali (as), may Allah be well pleased with them all.
  • Then the light of Muhammad ﷺ began to praise the Lord for seventy thousand years.
  • After this, the souls of the prophets were created.

When Allah had created the souls of the prophets, they all spoke La ilaha illAllah, Muhammad-ur-Rasulullah.

Then Allah created a lamp.

  • He placed the soul of Muhammad {s} upon this lamp in the very same shape he was to appear in this world, and he was as if in prayer.
  • The souls of all the prophets performed tawaf (circumambulation) around the soul of Muhammad {s} for two hundred thousand years.
  • Then the Lord ordered them to look at Muhammad {s}.
  • The souls then gazed upon him.
  • Whoever gazed upon his head became a king in this world.
  • He whose gaze fell upon his forehead became one of the just. He who espied his chest became a man of learning.
  • In brief, whichever part of his blessed body the soul cast its gaze upon, it was endowed with just such an art or craft as corresponded to that member.

Thereafter Allah Almighty commanded the people to perform their ritual prayer in the shape of the name “Ahmed”.

Ahmad in salah huroof

  • The ruk’u (bending from the waist) resembles the letter ‘ha’,
  • The sajda (prostration) resembles the letter ‘meem’, and
  • The final position of jalsa (kneeling) resembles the letter ‘dal’.
  • (In Arabic the name Ahmad contains these consonants: alif, ha, meem, dal ).

Then the Lord Almighty created the Prophet’s {s} resembling in their forms the shape of the name “Muhammad”.

  • The head is round, like the letter ‘meem’.
  • The two hands resemble the letter ‘ha’,
  • the belly again resembles a ‘meem’, and
  • the feet resemble a ‘dal’.

And now, oh ye desirous of learning divine secrets! I will now put forth to you the circumstances of the birth of the Holy Prophet , his mission and the revelation of the Quran and its holy words, by the leave of the Almighty Lord, Allah.

Muharram: Everything You Need to Know about The Sacred Month and its Benefits

Muharram: Everything You Need to Know about The Sacred Month and its Benefits

When is Muharram?

Muharram, also known as Muharram-ul-Haram, is the first month of the Hijri calendar and thus marks the beginning of the Islamic year. It is the only month which Allah's name has been attached to - the Prophet Muhammad (saw) referred to it as 'the Sacred Month of Allah' - and is thus a highly blessed month.

It is one of the four sacred months, and its special importance is indicated by its name. The word 'Muharram' literally means 'forbidden' - i.e. it is so sacred that certain actions become forbidden during it, as they would violate its sanctity. Both the month of the Muharram and Allah's House (Al-Masjid Al-Haram) derive their names from the same Arabic root word; both are sacred spaces in which every deed, good or bad, weighs heavier on the scales.

Why is Muharram so special?

'Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve[lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, s o do not wrong yourselves during them …’ (Qur’an, 9:36)

Regarding this verse, Ibn Katheer (rh) explains, 'Allah has chosen elites from His creation : from among the angels He chose Messengers, from among mankind He chose Messengers, from among speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr), from among spaces on earth He chose the mosques, from among the months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months…So, venerate that which has been chosen by Allah, for people of understanding and wisdom respect that which has been chosen by Him’. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

Therefore, Muharram is special simply because Allah has chosen it to be so . He commands us not to 'wrong ourselves' during this sacred month, which essentially means to ensure we have pure intentions and righteous behaviour and don't fall into sin.

What are the four sacred months?

Allah has also chosen Rajab, Dhul-Qa'dah and Dhul-Hijjah as sacred months.

speech in urdu written about muharram ul haram

Historically, one of the practical consequences of Dhul-Qa'dah , Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram being sacred was that pilgrims would be allowed to perform Hajj safely without worrying about banditry or war . Fighting was forbidden during Dhul-Qa'dah, when they would be travelling to make the Hajj; Dhul-Hijjah, when they would be performing Hajj in Makkah and its surroundings; and Muharram, when they would be returning home from Hajj. This standard was upheld by the Arabs in pre-Islamic times, and Allah confirms it in the Qur'an.

Rajab , meanwhile, is the seventh month of the Hijri calendar and stands alone as a sacred month. Historically, this was to allow people to perform 'Umrah in Rajab if they wanted to.

What are the benefits of Muharram?

Although many of us understand the importance of the month of Ramadan, we can often neglect the sacred months. However, they offer us a wealth of opportunities to seek the mercy and favour of Allah, the likes of which cannot be found at any other time of the year. They have been specifically selected by Allah Himself as the best times to draw closer to Him.

As mentioned before, our deeds carry more weight during Muharram, just as they carry more weight in the Ka'bah and its surroundings. Thus, there is an opportunity to gain more reward every day; but also the danger of gaining more sins with our bad deeds. This means we should be extra-vigilant when it comes to how we act, whether in our relationships, at work, in our worship, in our time management, or even how we take care of our health. With the right intention, every single action can become an opportunity for reward!

We've put together a quick list of easy ways to take advantage of the benefits of Muharram:

  • Say salaam more! This is the greeting of the Prophet (saw) and the people of Paradise, and such a simple action can reap countless rewards and forgiveness.
  • Smile at everyone (even on Monday mornings). This simple action will weigh heavy on the scales during Muharram.
  • Give regular Sadaqah . Muharram is the beginning of the Islamic New Year, so it's the perfect time to make resolutions and establish good habits that you can reap the rewards of all-year round.

speech in urdu written about muharram ul haram

  • Improve your health by eating better, exercising more and having a good sleeping routine. Yes, taking care of your health is a rewardable action too - your body is an amanah (trust) from Allah! Making a few lifestyle changes can earn you countless rewards.
  • Seek forgiveness. Since sins are heavier in Muharram, you should ask for forgiveness as often as possible during this month, or even erase your sins by giving water to the people of Yemen , which is a great Sadaqah Jariyah.
  • Read more Qur'an. It's an obvious one that always gets put on these lists - but it's the perfect way to draw closer to Allah during this incredible month! The best way to do it is to commit to just 10-15 minutes per day; set yourself a time and stay disciplined! Hopefully, you will stick to this New Year's resolution if you establish the good habit during Ramadan.

These actions aren't specific to Muharram, but they are highly recommended, and it makes sense to increase them during this blessed month!

What are some recommended actions or Sunnah during Muharram?

It is highly recommended to fast as much as possible during Muharram (though fasting the whole month is reserved for Ramadan only). The Messenger of Allah (saw) said, 'The best fasting after Ramadan is the Sacred Month of Allah (Muharram)...' (Muslim)

In fact, the sanctity of Muharram was so established that even the Quraysh in the days of Jahiliyah (ignorance) used to fast on certain days. One such day is the Day of ‘Ashura (the 10th of Muharram), which celebrates Allah (swt) freeing Prophet Musa (as) and his people from the bonds of Pharaoh:

speech in urdu written about muharram ul haram

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said thatfasting on the day of ‘Ashura , ‘expiates the minor sins of the past year’ (Muslim). It is, therefore, highly recommended to fast on this day.

The Prophet (saw) also advised us to also fast on the 9th and/or 11th of Muharram in order to differentiate between his Ummah and the People of the Book and as we know, following his Sunnah contains immense blessing. We have another blog post about the Day of 'Ashura if you want to learn more about this amazing day, from its history to its numerous blessings.

Should I give my Zakat during Muharram?

Although there is no specific recommendation to pay your Zakat in Muharram, during the times of the Prophet (saw), Zakat was collected from the Ummah on the 1st of Muharram. The increased reward available for honouring the times of the year favoured by Allah is one of the reasons why many Muslims around the world still choose to give their Zakat in Muharram or Ramadan.

If you prefer to spread out your Zakat payments over the whole year, you can estimate what your Zakat should be using our Zakat calculator and divide it by twelve. This year, you can help rehabilitate the water network of the city of Ma’rib in Yemen with your Zakat by setting up a regular donation to our Yemen Water Fund , where every £10 will give 10 people water for life.

Sponsoring an orphan is another great way to spread out these monthly payments; it costs just 98p a day and completely transforms a child's life!

Most of our projects at Muslim Hands are Zakat-eligible, from our emergency appeals and campaigns to our long-term work in eradicating poverty. You can also give to our Zakat Fund if you can't decide which project to contribute towards, and our experts will allocate it to the communities who need it most.

Muharram-ul-Haram Calendar

Muharram is the first Islamic month. Islamic calendar starts from the Muharram. It is the second most respectful and holiest month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram is one of the four scary months of the Islamic calendar.

The 10th day of the month is celebrated in memory of Hazrat Muhammad's (SAW) grandson. The tenth day of the Muharram is commonly known as the day of Ashura. This day is spent in honor and respect of Hazrat Imam Hussain. Imam Hussain was martyred with His 72 companions. Shia Muslims mourn on 10th Muharram, and Sunni Muslims fast on that day along with respect and honor.

Fasting in Muharram has its importance. The Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) said that “The best fasting after Ramzan is the Scared month of Allah (Muharram)”. The fasting on the 9th and 10th Muharram was also common in Quraish in the days of their ignorance of Islam. They fast as Allah released Hazrat Musa (AS) and his people from the Pharaoh.

The first ten days of the Muharram are spent with sorrow and simplicity. Muslims often fast on two days of the Muharram that are 9th and 10th Muharram. These two days are important in the history of Islam as well.

Importance of Ashura Day in Islam

The importance of Ashura day in Islam is as follows:

  • Allah Almighty accepted the forgiveness of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) on this day.
  • Hazrat Nooh's (AS) boat was saved from the horrible flood. Allah saved Hazrat Nooh (AS) and his fellows, and they landed successfully.
  • Allah saved Hazrat Musa (AS) and his people from the dark period of the Firoon.
  • The incidence of Karbala is the most horrible incidence of Islam that was happened on Youm-e-Ashura. Imam Hussain, with His family and other companions, was martyred in Karbala.
