I read Love Story one morning in about fourteen minutes flat, out of simple curiosity. I wanted to discover why five and a half million people had actually bought it. I wasn’t successful. I was so put off by Erich Segal’s writing style, in fact, that I hardly wanted to see the movie at all. Segal’s prose style is so revoltingly coy — sort of a cross between a parody of Hemingway and the instructions on a soup can — that his story is fatally infected.

The fact is, however, that the film of Love Story is infinitely better than the book. I think it has something to do with the quiet taste of Arthur Hiller , its director, who has put in all the things that Segal thought he was being clever to leave out. Things like color, character, personality, detail, and background. The interesting thing is that Hiller has saved the movie without substantially changing anything in the book. Both the screenplay and the novel were written at the same time, I understand, and if you’ve read the book, you’ve essentially read the screenplay. Nothing much is changed except the last meeting between Oliver and his father; Hiller felt the movie should end with the boy alone, and he was right. Otherwise, he’s used Segal’s situations and dialogue throughout.

But the Segal characters, on paper, were so devoid of any personality that they might actually have been transparent. Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal , who play the lovers on film, bring them to life in a way the novel didn’t even attempt. They do it simply by being there, and having personalities.

The story by now is so well-known that there’s no point in summarizing it for you. I would like to consider, however, the implications of “Love Story” as a three-, four-or five-handkerchief movie, a movie that wants viewers to cry at the end. Is this an unworthy purpose? Does the movie become unworthy, as Newsweek thought it did, simply because it has been mechanically contrived to tell us a beautiful, tragic tale? I don’t think so. There’s nothing contemptible about being moved to joy by a musical, to terror by a thriller, to excitement by a Western. Why shouldn’t we get a little misty during a story about young lovers separated by death?

Hiller earns our emotional response because of the way he’s directed the movie. The Segal book was so patently contrived to force those tears, and moved toward that object with such humorless determination, that it must have actually disgusted a lot of readers. The movie is mostly about life, however, and not death. And because Hiller makes the lovers into individuals, of course we’re moved by the film’s conclusion. Why not?

  • Trivia The scenes with Oliver Barrett walking alone through a snowy New York were added after principal photography was completed. The production was almost out of money and did not have the necessary funds for permits to shoot in New York City again - so all the shots were grabbed illegally using a skeleton film crew and Ryan O'Neal .

In the penalty box, he tells Jenny that he is concentrating on how he is going to total the Dartmouth player who had him sent to the box. He points to the Dartmouth player, who at this point has just taken down another Harvard player who is clearly wearing #7.

Successful, Sentimental And Satirized, 'Love Story' Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw starred in Love Story — a romantic tearjerker that became the highest grossing movie of 1970. Since then, it has inspired countless ugly cries — and plenty of parodies, too.

Fifty years ago, a simple but tragic love story became a global sensation that stunned the entertainment industry. Love Story , the romantic tearjerker starring Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw, broke box office records and the book it was based on was a bestseller that was translated into more than 30 languages.

"What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who dies?" So begins the novel and screenplay, both written by Erich Segal.

In December, 1970, in the midst of the Vietnam War and the continuing fight for Civil Rights — along came an "unabashedly sentimental" story "about the power of love," says Segal's daughter, writer Francesca Segal. It was "genuine and earnest and I think it just struck a chord," she says. The 50th anniversary edition of the novel Love Story includes an introduction by Francesca.

Erich Segal was 30 years old and a professor at Yale when he wrote the 131-page Love Story. The idea came when he learned that one of his former students was just 25 when he lost his wife to cancer. Oliver Barrett IV, played by Ryan O'Neal in the movie, is a sensitive, rich kid and a Harvard hockey player. The inspiration for Oliver has been the source of intrigue and even controversy. Segal said Oliver was partly modeled after Al Gore, but mostly after Tommy Lee Jones (who also has a part in the movie). Segal got to know both men when they were all students at Harvard together. Some years later, Segal said he modeled Oliver after Watergate investigator Terry Lenzner .

Jenny, played by MacGraw, is a sassy, working-class baker's daughter who goes to Radcliffe and works in the library. In 1970, Segal told The New York Times Jenny was modeled after a woman he dated while he was a student at Harvard.

"Ollie, you're a preppie millionaire, and I'm a social zero," Jenny teases.

They were gorgeous to look at as they frolic in the snow, argue, fall deeply in love and marry, despite the disapproval of Oliver's father. Just as they start a new life together, Jenny learns she has a fatal blood disease and dies. (Only in the book is the disease identified as leukemia.)

"It was cliché, but it worked," says Ali MacGraw. "And everybody was completely flabbergasted when it had the reception that it had, which was right away," she remembers.

'Love Letters' Reunites Stars Of Iconic Love Story

People flocked to see Love Story when it was released widely on Christmas Day, with numerous accounts of people waiting in long lines at the box office. Movie attendance had been down in 1970. The Los Angeles Times called Love Story a "phenomenon" that was a "boon" to the "embattled" studio Paramount and "evidence people ... still want to go to the movies in vast numbers." The film, directed by Arthur Hiller, was nominated for seven Oscars, winning one for Francis Lai's original score. It won five Golden Globes, including Best Drama and Best Actress and Actor for MacGraw and O'Neal respectively. MacGraw quickly became a fashion icon.

Bestselling romance writer Susan Elizabeth Phillips says just about everyone she knew saw the movie after first reading the book.

Phillips, who was in her early 20s when the book and movie came out, also recalls the sobs. " Love Story was an ugly cry," she says.

"I remember when I read it, of course dissolving in tears," says Phillips. "I read it to my boyfriend at the time, read it out loud to him, sobbing through the whole thing. We've now been married for 50 years." Phillips says her husband doesn't remember any of this. "So that's a blessing," she jokes.

As for Love Story's very famous, oft-ridiculed line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry," even MacGraw says she didn't know what it meant at the time. But now, years later, she finds truth in it: "Saying sorry isn't what it's about. It's about really feeling badly for the hurt ... and then absolutely trying never to do it again. So there's a lot of work more than, 'Gee, I'm sorry,' and then scooting outside to get on your bike and ride into the fall leaves or whatever."

Still, MacGraw wishes she'd asked about the meaning 50 years ago during filming: "It's an insane line. But I said it. And I live with it!"

MacGraw also lives with the many parodies Love Story inspired. Her personal favorite is by Carol Burnett and Harvey Korman. "Fabulous," says MacGraw. In an episode of The Simpsons, Homer and Marge are big fans of the movie and force their kids to watch it. They don't get it at all. When Bart hears the opening line, "What can you say about a 25-year-old girl who dies," he blurts out, "I say bury her before she starts to smell!" Homer and Marge are appalled.

Many a Simpson writer attended Harvard where Love Story was filmed and where it is still lampooned to this day. The school's Crimson Key Society puts on an annual, Rocky Horror -style screening for first-year students (this year's was canceled due to the pandemic). Older students dress up like hippies and heckle the screen from beginning to end. Junior Davis Bailey, president of the Crimson Key Society, says they make fun of everything about it. "Basically every ten seconds or so we have a line that, collectively or individually, some of us will shout out at the screen or we do something that we act out," says Bailey. "Because the movie is definitely very sappy."

"Sappy" is how some critics felt about Love Story way back in 1970. "Phony," "cliché," "contrived" were some of the words they used.

And here's where Erich Segal's best-known work becomes an example of what happens when popular culture and academia collide.

Segal, the son of a rabbi, grew up in New York. While Love Story was embraced by the masses, Segal also wrote scholarly works on Plato and Plautus and his lectures at Yale were hugely popular. "Electrifying" is how one of his students, Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau, described him. But in 1972, Segal was denied tenure at Yale. "It wasn't fair," Trudeau told the Yale Alumni Magazine in 2010, shortly after Segal's death, "but you can't dress up in tight leather pants to chat with starlets on Johnny Carson Friday night and expect to be taken seriously in a classroom Monday morning." Yale denies that the popular and commercial success of Segal's Love Story's had anything to do with its decision.

Remembrances

Remembering authors robert parker, erich segal.

Francesca Segal says her father was, "for a long time, completely and absolutely devastated and heartbroken that he didn't make tenure at Yale." She believes one of the reasons Love Story touched so many people is because her father "didn't have a cynical bone in his body," and that he wrote from his heart.

Romance fiction writer Susan Elizabeth Phillips says critics back in 1970 had an aversion to just about anything that was embraced by the masses. "The fact that a work of art, which that book is, evokes this strong emotion was something that the literati at the time looked down on," says Phillips. "The experience was supposed to be cerebral. It wasn't supposed to be emotional."

If nothing else, Love Story is definitely emotional. Reviewing the film, Roger Ebert called it a "a three-, four-or five-handkerchief movie." Le Monde wrote it was the novel that "no one dared to write, but everyone was waiting to read."

At a time when people could use a good cry, Ali MacGraw wonders if today's audiences have the patience for a simple story about love and loss.

"The terrifying thing about this ever more automaton world that we're walking into," she says, is "that we're functioning as opposed to feeling. And I think there's a big difference."

Still, MacGraw says, to this day, she hears from people who remember being deeply moved by Love Story . "Always somebody comes up and says, 'Oh, you were in that movie, why aren't you guys making another one?' Of course, the fact that I'm dead and considerably older probably hasn't computed," she laughs.

10 The Accidental Husband (2008)

The Accidental Husband

The Accidental Husband

The Accidental Husband is a romantic comedy from 2008 that starred Uma Turman as Emma and The Walking Dead 's own Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Patrick. In this film, radio host and relationship advice guru Emma's world is turned upside down when her upcoming marriage to Richard (Colin Firth) is delayed because she is still technically married to a man named Patrick. Patrick is a firefighter and the cunning mastermind behind Emma's troubles. He fabricates an elaborate plan for revenge that eventually leads to an unintentional and unexpected love story.

A Classic 2000s Delight

The title alone practically guarantees a formulaic, feel-good time. Uma Thurman provides a knock-out performance worthy of screwball originals, and her co-stars aren't too shabby either. Colin Firth is notorious for his leading male roles in romcoms like Bridget Jones' Diary , so his casting is perfect. Jeffrey Dean Morgan shows a familiarly scheming, but far more wholesome side to his acting repertoire. The film is chock-full of the typical screwball plot devices, from overly complicated problem-solving to impractically dramatic stakes, and has all the makings of a comfortable rom-com binge.

9 The Back-Up Plan (2010)

The Back-up Plan

The Back-up Plan

Continuing on the romantic comedy train, 2010's The Back-Up Plan , starring Jennifer Lopez and Alex O'Loughlin, is a solid choice for a free movie on YouTube. This rollercoaster of a plot starts with a desperate Zoe (Lopez), whose internal clock is ticking into overtime. Tired of waiting for the perfect relationship, she decides to get artificially inseminated in order to start a family. She then meets Stan (O'Loughlin) and the two completely hit it off. Zoe might have found her one and only, but is that one and only ready for fatherhood?

A Surprisingly Poignant Rom-Com

Kudos are in order for an early 2010s film about artificial insemination and its surrounding cultural questions. Jennifer Lopez is an icon in more ways than one, including her romcom lead prowess . While Alex O'Loughlin may perhaps be better known for his stint as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett on Hawaii Five-0 , he manages to bring his comedic genre-mashing chops to the role. While the premise is fresh, the momentum of this film can be a bit still at times, its ending is far worth the wait.

8 What Women Want (2000)

Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt in What Women Want

What Women Want is a classic pairing of rivals to relations. In it, Mel Gibson plays chauvinist advertising exec Nick Marshall who, after a freak accident with a blow dryer, is suddenly able to eavesdrop on women's thoughts. Having recently lost a promotion and with his company looking to conquer the more feminine market, he uses this newfound skill to his advantage to listen in on his new boss, Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt). Of course, this causes him to fall hard for her in the process. Between repairing his relationships with his female co-workers (and his young daughter) and coming up with the perfect ad campaign to impress his bosses, he takes full advantage of this newfound gift for as long as it lasts.

A Formula that Works

Acclaimed filmmaker Nancy Meyers is at her best in this film, as are Hunt and Gibson. Both actors were at the top of their game at the time, and their onscreen chemistry is absolutely electric. The message of empathy for one's fellow man (or woman, in this case), is hard to deny. Marshall's behavior is shown to stem from his upbringing in a casino, an insight that might otherwise have been lost in less adept hands. There's a formulaic nature to this film, yes, but it only serves to punctuate the story and its message all the more.

A Star is Born

The 10 Most Underrated Performances In Romance Movies Of All Time

The romance genre doesn't get the recognition it deserves for its performances.

7 Penelope (2006)

Penelope

Not available

Penelope tells the story of a family cursed by the decisions of their ancestors to not accept a pair of young lovers. In the present day, Penelope (Christina Ricci), an aristocratic heiress, is born with a pig snout as a result. The only way to break the curse is to find her true love, someone who will wholeheartedly accept her, snout and all. Her well-meaning, but utterly misguided parents hide her from the world for years... that is until, sometime after her 18th birthday, when they decide to take her love life into their own hands. Their attempts to set her up with a fellow blueblood, however, go horribly awry, leading Penelope to strike off on her own in search of acceptance.

Elevated by a Brilliant Ensemble Cast

Released during the height of fable fantasy fervor, this modern take on classic fairy tale tropes is nothing short of delightful. There is a message of acceptance hidden deep beneath the overtures of classism. Plus, this cast reads like an understated who's who, from Catherine O'Hara as Penelope's mother, to James McAvoy as a kind, but subterfuging suitor, to Peter Dinklage and Reese Witherspoon as newfound friends Penelope finds along the way. And, with a PG rating, the film is wholesome enough to binge with some younger loved ones in tow.

6 Ball of Fire (1941)

Barbara Stanwyck in Ball of Fire

Ball of Fire is a classic screwball comedy featuring Barbara Stanwyck and Gary Cooper. The story centers around a group of bachelors (and one widower) who live and work together in a prim and proper pad. Desperate to understand and learn some more modern colloquialisms to add to the work, the youngest of them, Professor Potts, a grammarian in American slang, turns to Katherine "Sugarpuss" O'Shea for advice. A nightclub performer by trade, she only agrees to stay after finding herself on the run from police as a result of her mob boyfriend's shenanigans. The pair, of course, take a liking to each other, but are forced to put their feelings aside momentarily for the sake of the book and their lives after Sugarpuss' angry boyfriend comes a'calling.

A Screwball Comedy that Stands the Test of Time

This title perfectly encapsulates Stanwyck's character, a firecracker with a silver tongue for 'modern' American colloquialisms. Obvious references to the fable of Snow White aside, this juxtaposition of stuffiness and flamboyance makes for some incredible screwball shenanigans. The chemistry between the two leads is rife, though they are at times outmatched by those of their academic companions. A common matter in romantic comedies, the couple's attempts to save each other are of course what ultimately keep them apart for so long. Viewers will have to refrain from yelling at the screen for some more open and honest communication, which really would have solved just about all the woes of these two lovebirds to begin with.

Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in His Girl Friday

Best Classic Screwball Comedies, Ranked

These screwball comedy movies offered a generation hope during the great depression, and continue to be some of the funniest movies today.

5 The Wedding Singer (1988)

The Wedding Singer

The Wedding Singer

The Wedding Singer features Adam Sandler as Robbie and Drew Barrymore as Julia, two features of the wedding circuit who are just perfect for each other. The only problem? Both of them are already engaged... to other people. That is until Robbie is dumped at the altar by his fiancé, who fell in love with his rock star persona and just can't stomach his new career as a wedding singer. This puts an obvious damper on both his personal and professional life as his gigs turn more and more sour. What follows is the ultimate will-they-won't-they as the newfound work pair finds their feelings for each other growing in spite of or because of their current and ex-spouses to be.

Irresistible Chemistry Between Sandler and Barrymore

This one is a classic on must-watch weekend re-runs for a reason. An early pairing between Sandler and Barrymore, it's no wonder after watching this film why they would go on to star alongside each other in so many more films. This film is easily one of Sandler's all-time best comedies, with just the right mix of oddball to offset the otherwise romantic tropes. Set in the '80s with the costumes and soundtrack to match, this film has an understated realness of work relationships amid the ridiculousness of wedding day jams. Plus, it's a chance to check out the comedic stylings of the always hilarious Ellen Albertini Dow as Rosie.

4 Every Day (2018)

A Scene From Every Day

Based on the novel by David Levithan, Every Day follows the love story between 16-year-old Rhiannon (Angourie Rice), who falls in love with the mysterious 'A' (who is played by far too many actors to list here). 'A', you see, is a traveling spirit, an entity that wakes up in a different living teenage body, regardless of gender, every day. Rhiannon first meets 'A' when they wake up in the body of Justin, her otherwise neglectful boyfriend. A day spent alongside her, of course, causes 'A' to fall madly in love with her, which leads them to seek her out long after he leaves her boyfriend behind. Upon learning his secret, Rhiannon is challenged to fall and stay in love with someone whose gender-fluid, outward-facing form is forever in flux.

A Romance with Philosophical Undertones

This film does a stellar job of creating purpose for the characters in a cohesive narrative, it also manages to sneak in a handful of ethical conundrums, mostly centering around the agency of 'A' as they take over the lives of others. The bodies 'A' possess do not usually remember their previous day(s) spent taken over by 'A'. This begs the question of whether it is fair for 'A' to exist in others, especially when they take over bodies for an extended period of time, living their lives for them. The answer is, in a word no, a sad fact that both Rhiannon and 'A' both come to accept after time. Thankfully, 'A' manages to use their powers for good, for the most part, and still manages to leave an indelible impact on the lives they briefly possess.

3 The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009)

The Time Traveler's Wife

The Time Traveler's Wife

There's nothing like a bit of time travel to up the stakes for romance. The Time Traveler's Wife stars Eric Bana as the traveler in question, Henry DeTamble, and Rachel McAdams as Clare Abshire, his wife. Based on Audrey Niffenegger's 2003 novel, the film follows DeTamble's entrances and exits into Clare's life, which is the result of an uncontrollable para-genetic disorder. As a result, he travels back and forth between different important moments of his life without notice. Unable to change much about them, he struggles to develop a relationship with the love of his life, for whom his sudden appearances and reappearances throughout the course of her life eventually take their toll.

Another Sci-Fi-Tinged Romance

There is a graceful fluidity to this romance in what might otherwise have been marred with overwrought science-fiction explanations. While it is at first unsettling to watch DeTamble meet up with his wife in her pre-pubescent years and beyond, their involvement over time serves to both bond them together and tear them apart. There is an uneasy feeling of knowing what will pass, reliving old memories in real-time, and not being able to spend moments in said real-time with the ones you love. The mystery of not knowing when and where the main character will appear and reappear makes for some brilliant dramatic moments, which are only punctuated further by the unknown of just when they might happen.

20 Timeless Romance Movies That Never Get Old

Romance movies on the big screen are proof that beauty and happily ever afters truly do exist, if only for a precious couple of flickering hours.

2 Overboard (1987)

Goldie Hawn in Overboard

Overboard is an '80s comedy classic. Starring real-life partners Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, this film follows a bratty socialite (Hawn) who loses her memory after falling overboard her yacht. The repair person she recently fired, Russell, comes to her aid but decides to use her loss to his advantage. Claiming to be her husband, he brings her home from the hospital to take care of his brood of rambunctious boys in their stuffed to the seams house. What will happen when she falls wise to his ploy? Will she stay 'married' and give up her former lifestyle? Or abandon this strange man and his family altogether. This film, which was remade in 2018 , is available on YouTube alongside the remake.

A Strange Premise that Has Aged Surprisingly Well

While the concept in this film is undoubtedly alarming, there is a deftness to the handling of this gaslighting plot. This is due, in part, to the skill of screenwriter Leslie Dixon, who would go on to create even more cult favorites like Mrs. Doubtfire just a few years later. The chemistry between Russell and Hawn, as well as their ability to play so well off of each other comedically, is why this film stands out as so crazily re-watchable years later, Stockholm syndrome and all. By some magic of filmmaking, both Russell's character and that of his rambunctious brood, seem to somehow, inexplicably, grow on the viewer with each watch.

1 A Walk to Remember (2002)

A Scene From aWalk to Remember Jamie and Landon

The iconic teen drama A Walk to Remember is based on an early Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. The film stars Shane West as Landon and Mandy Moore as Jamie. What starts out as a classic '50s Romeo and Juliet story meets 10 Things I Hate About You takes a hard turn into reality as forces beyond their control serve to push them apart. Will Jamie's illness push them apart? Love, understanding, and passion are constants as they navigate their youth with what time they have left.

A Timeless Tearjerker

There's nothing like young love and a coming-of-age romance, particularly when that film is as highly rewatchable as this one is. Melodramatic to its core, A Walk to Remember features iconic performances by both Shane West and Mandy Moore in one of her earliest roles. Moore's musical performance is expected, but stellar. Perhaps more poignant for fans of tearjerkers are their matrimonial scenes. Be prepared to break out the tissues for this one.

One day, Vittoria travels to Iraq to interview a subject, but she ends up wounded by the war in that country. Will he go there? Or will he let her go? The Tiger and the Snow is an odd love story that depicts how desperate we can become when we're afraid of losing a loved one.

Love Story Review: Matured Narration

Love Story Review: Matured Narration

Movie: Love Story Rating: 3/5 Banner: Sree Venkateswara Cinemas Cast: Naga Chaitanya, Sai Pallavi, Easwari Rao, Devyani, Rajeev Kanakala, Uttej, and others Cinematography: Vijay C Kumar Music: Pawan CH Producers: Narayan Das K Narang Puskar Ram Mohan Rao Written and directed by: Sekhar Kammula  Release Date: Sep 24, 2021

One film that has occupied media space for a long time is Sekhar Kammula’s “Love Story”, one of the most-anticipated Telugu films. He teams up with Naga Chaitanya for the first. It also marks his second combination with Sai Pallavi after Fidaa (2017).

Amidst the hype, the film hit theaters today. Let’s analyze.

Story: Revanth (Naga Chaitanya), a youngster with ambitions to achieve something in life, runs a Zumba center in Hyderabad. He hails from Armoor in Telangana and is a Christian.

Mounika (Sai Pallavi), an engineering graduate, comes from the same village to Hyderabad to find a job. Her room is adjacent to Revanth’s Zumba center.

She is also from Armoor but they have not met before as she is from a higher community and rich. Her uncle Narasimham (Rajeev Kanakala) holds a tight grip on their family and financial matters.

Seeking freedom from the clutches of her uncle, she decides to stay in Hyderabad and joins as a partner in Revanth’s Zumba center. They begin to fall in love with each other.

What will happen if her uncle gets to know her love story?

Artistes’ Performances: For the first time in his career, Naga Chaitanya has portrayed a role with so much conviction. As a lower-caste Telangana youngster, he has done a remarkable job. His sincere efforts in getting the dialect can be noticed. This is his career-best performance.

Sai Pallavi once again excels in the role of Mounika. With her impeccable dance skills and nuanced performance, she steals the hearts. Sai Pallavi gets a complex and emotionally charged character and she doesn’t falter a moment. She holds the scenes.

Senior actress Eeswari Rao as Chaitanya’s mother is excellent. Devyani, Rajeev Kanakala, and Uttej also leave a strong mark.

Technical Excellence: There is no need to mention that the songs have already chartbusters. Newcomer Pawan’s music is the main pillar of this film. The background score is also terrific.

Cinematographer Vijay C Kumar captures the moments neatly. The production design is apt.

Highlights: Naga Chaitanya’s performance Sai Pallavi’s magic Emotional moments Music

Drawback: Hurried climax Slow-pace

Analysis Addressing caste discrimination has become a regular feature in Tollywood lately. Not completely moving away from his style of presenting sensible love stories, director Sekhar Kammula touches upon two important issues – caste discrimination and sexual abuse.

“Love Story”, starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi, as the title says, is a love story but is not a chirpy drama as Kammula’s previous film “Fidaa” was. It is more of a serious film, with a realistic approach.

“Love Story” begins on a somber note. It takes a while to get into the groove. The film picks up when Sai Pallavi grooves to the song “Evo Evo Kalale..Tara Ram Pam” in a gay abandon. Sai Pallavi mesmerizes with her dance steps in this song. Even from the narrative point, it sets the tone for the rest of the romance.

Their romantic thread cutting from Hyderabad to Armoor engages us. There are simple, yet beautiful moments here.

After engaging in romantic drama in the first, the film comes to the core point of the issue. The class differences come to the fore, and the movie turns into a serious drama. However, in a sudden jolt, the penultimate portion deals with another issue (sexual abuse).

While the climax makes our hearts heavy, it also gives the feeling that the director has suddenly changed the tone. The climax portion makes different from the other regular movies that have dealt with caste issues like ‘Uppena’, ‘Sridevi Soda Center, etc. But care should have been taken for better results. There is a hurried feeling.

The second issue that is dealt with in the film may not be palatable to a section of the audience. However, Kammula took a risk.

Sekhar Kammula’s films always suffer from bloating. Sharp editing has never been his strength. “Love Story” also does have this drawback. This is the reason why the film loses grip in the middle portion.

But Sekhar leaves his mark with some terrific scenes – like Sai Pallavi slipping her tongue about Chaitanya’s caste and her love proposal, sanitary pad episode, sequences with Easwari and Naga Chaitanya stand out.

All in all, despite slow narration, “Love Story” scores high on excellent performances from the lead pair, music, and some emotional sequences. But if you are looking for a cheerful romantic comedy, you might be disappointed. It is a sensible romantic drama with two important issues. Watch it for music, and the lead pair.

Bottom line: Captivating music and Sai Pallavi's magic

Positive Messages

Relationships must be based on trust. Partners should also find balance and know how to give each other space while also caring and looking out for one another. "Our full potential is on the other side of fear." "There is strength in femininity." "Love is like heights—the fear never goes away, you just get better at facing it."

Positive Role Models

Angela and Ivan break laws and go to great lengths to engage in the illegal act of trespassing. They're seen planning, cutting through locks, evading security guards, and so on. They also risk their lives for their "art." They show courage and teamwork. They come from humble backgrounds yet have made a name for themselves internationally. Their motives for what they do include making a living as well as gaining fame and notoriety.

Diverse Representations

The main characters are White and Russian. They speak in Russian and English. They are seen reacting to the war in Ukraine, and one says in her country you cannot speak out—either you are censored or you leave. They travel and spend time in China, Thailand, and Malaysia in the film.

What's the Story?

The stars of SKYWALKERS: A LOVE STORY, Angela Nikolau and Vanya (Ivan) Beerkus, are two of the world's most renowned "rooftoppers," or social media stars who climb the roofs of the globe's tallest buildings. But more than that, they are also a couple. The film tracks their individual journeys to their unusual career and captures their first collaboration. From there, the pair fell in love and attempted increasingly more daring climbs. But their relationship also complicated their work. The film shows all of this in the buildup to their biggest climb ever: the Merdeka building, the world's tallest, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Is It Any Good?

It's rare for a documentary to create enough suspense to cause sweaty palms and nail-biting, but this one does. That's because Skywalkers: A Love Story brings viewers right along with "rooftoppers" Angela and Vanya as they climb the world's tallest buildings, via drone and GoPro footage. The couple has shown bravery not just in these daredevil feats, but also in allowing the cameramen into some of their most intimate moments of falling in love and bickering their way to a temporary breakup. Then again, the film is clearly one more part of their hustle. The two make their living this way and the documentary does a good job providing the backstory of their home lives in Russia, where few traditional career opportunities await.

The pair vow to stop climbing after the feat that bookends this film, but they're young. That youth is on clear display throughout the film, but perhaps especially when Angela proclaims that she can't live a "plain" life because nobody will talk about her when she's gone. What she learns, though, is that the show—skywalking—is actually a means to a larger end, which is love. Good on directors Zimbalist and Bukhonina for looking for this bigger story. They certainly have enough material with the pair's unusual career choice, but rather than limiting themselves to the heights, they also try to dig deeper.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about why Angela and Ivan risk their lives to do what they do in Skywalkers: A Love Story. What are some of the motivations revealed in this film?

An interviewer asks Angela if she's worried others will try to copy her and risk their lives climbing buildings. Do you think that's a danger of this documentary? Why or why not?

Almost all of Angela's original group of climbers died on rooftops. What does that tell you about this pastime/career? Do you think the film shows the dangers?

How do Angela and Ivan show courage and teamwork , not just in climbing rooftops, but in their poses and also in allowing cameras into their lives?

How does this compare to other documentaries you've watched?

Love Story movie review: Sekhar Kammula shows a mirror, but not sans his trademark style

Language: Telugu

KVR Mahendra’s Dorasani has a very affecting scene where the domestic help says to the ‘ dorasani’  that a woman, despite her social standing, is never really free. Sekhar Kammula ’s Love Story has Mounika ( Sai Pallavi ) who is from a landowning dominant caste family, but she does not have enough money to her name to recharge her mobile data plan.

Even though the film uses this instance to elicit humour, and to show us the girl’s innate bias against the working class, you see the irony. You also see that the filmmaker wanted to stretch the film from as many sides/angles as he can. When I watched the trailer, I feared the film would oversimplify the issues it is trying to tackle in the lieu of universality, but I am happy to report that the worst thing I can say about the film is that it is over-ambitious.

I always look forward to a Sekhar Kammula film because he builds a better world than the one we are living in. But with Love Story , he is in no mood to dream.

He tries, to the best of his ability and understanding, to show us the world as it is. Revanth (Naga Chaitanya) is a self-made man who runs a Zumba centre, and is proud of that fact. Mounika comes from a place of wealth and social privilege, but she has her own demons to fight. Like any good romance, the film spends a substantial chunk of the screen time on their relationship — how it begins, blooms, and blossoms. Is that not enough though? Two people liking each other enough to want a life together? It is not and the rest of the film tries to answer, or rather interrogate why.

Kammula’s characters have never been perfect. But the flaws of the characters in this film are much more than amusing idiosyncrasies, appropriately so. The girl who you love and who loves you back is still conditioned to think a certain way, even if she says otherwise. Mounika has the same luxury to be ignorant and naïve as Jo from Pariyerum Perumal does. But instead of keeping her that way, the writing tries to add shades to her. She is not the worst of them, but she is not the best either.

I wish this angle was explored a bit more, but Pallavi is arrestingly good at playing this person. I know I am supposed to say more than she lights up the screen when she comes, but that is exactly what she does. Even if she is drying her hair in the open, her unscrupulous manner wakes the banalities up, and makes them feel original. To show the audience the pain that is simmering inside the character, without really showing it until the last moment, is a balance that is hard to strike.

But the film is Chaitanya’s to take. He carries Revanth with great ease and confidence. And because it is Sekhar Kammula, the character is not a mere template. He has his convictions, but he bends at times. He gets angry when someone insults him, but he is not allowed to turn into an angry young man. And it is in these moments of doubt and displeasure, we see the actor shine. When Revanth is hurt and disappointed, we can feel his hurt. It is nice to see him finally manage to break the barrier.

It is impossible to speak about his character without connecting it to his mother, played effectively by Easwari Rao. Most films write mothers who are from a lower strata as docile and easily-pleased beings. Here, the mother is the moral centre of the film. She is the one who tells her son what to scan while looking for discrimination and bigotry. She is the one who forces him to expect respect from a society that never gives anything to people like them. Their relationship is the most satisfying aspect of the film.

Heroine dancing in the rain is a Sekhar Kammula staple. We have all accepted it, and we even laugh about it. But because Mounika is a relatively more complex and troubled character, the contrast helps us understand why the staple exists. Rain songs, in other films, are an opportunity to titillate the viewer, and to sustain the crepe silk industry. But in Kammula’s films, they are a respite. Our first instinct when we see rain coming is to hide or cover, but if a woman welcomes the rain with open hands, it implies she is tired of hiding/covering herself. It also gives the viewer a chance to see this character for who they are, without all the things that are bringing them down.

Speaking of songs, I would have happily sacrificed ‘ Saranga Dariya ,’ despite the joy that comes from watching Pallavi defy gravity, if it meant a pre-climax that is not rushed. The film comes scarily close to pulling a Dear Comrade , and that is just unacceptable. If I sound like I am complaining about the number of songs, I am not. Pawan Ch’s music brings the story alive. Especially the background score. It mimics the heartbeats of a character in a tense moment, and it complements the spring in the hero’s steps when he is happy, and it does all this without bringing much attention to itself. That is the conundrum though. We want films to organically explore a relationship and the people in it, but time is always a constraint. I understand that the song is not an indulgence. We needed to see her happy because she is, and she is rarely allowed happiness. But we also need the more important aspects of the film given the time they deserve. The mistakes are understandable, but they are still mistakes.

Marthand K Venkatesh’s editing and Vijaya Kumar’s cinematography are expectedly functional. The rest of the cast, comprising the likes of Rajeev Kanakala, Uttej, Devayani, and Ganga Avva, do exactly what they are supposed to. Even the side-kick/best friend character is effective. He also wears t-shirts with silly words written on them in Telugu, but we are not forced to laugh at them. They are there, and they do tell something about that character if the viewer wants to know. As simple as that.

Someone I know said the other day that despite their poetry and depth, Sekhar Kammula names his films in a rather generic manner, Godavari being the exception. I agreed, and I said that Love Story is one of them. It says nothing particular about the film, and it is not memorable in anyway. But while watching the film, I have noticed how the lead couple starts addressing each other in texts, after their mutual confession of love, and I have realised that maybe it is intentional. There are only so many ways to address someone you love, and even if a word like ‘Bangaram’ is a cheesy cliché, when it finally rolls out of your tongue to call someone you love, it feels like you have invented it. Whether it is Qutub Shah swimming across Musi, trying to meet Bhagmati, or a guy like Revanth simply laying a plank to bridge the gap between Mounika’s house and his, it is all done in the name of love. And they are all love stories.

Love Story is available in theatres.

Cast - Naga Chaitanya,Sai Pallavi, Ragiv Kanakala and Others

Director - Sekhar Kammula

Producer - Narayan Das K Narang; Puskar Ram Mohan Rao

Banner - Amigos Creations, Sree Venkateswara Cinemas

Music - Pawan

Sekhar Kammula’s Love Story with Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi had a long wait for theatrical release and finally, the movie hit the screens. Brand Sekhar Kammula already enjoys a huge fan base among the class audience and his Love Story raised the expectations with the very talented Sai Pallavi in it. Sekhar claimed the Love Story to be a different movie from his usual style and many are also curious to see how Naga Chaitanya fits in the Kammula-style direction. The movie is out with chartbuster songs and huge expectations. Let us get into the review now.

What Is It About?

A lower-caste youngster Revanth (Naga Chaitanya) lives in the city, running a Zumba dance institute on his penthouse with little earnings from it. He aims to become successful in the business but his financial and family background does not support him much. Mouni (Sai Pallavi) comes to the city with IT job aspirations but ends up becoming a partner in Revanth’s Zumba dance institute. They fall in love, but Mouni’s upper-caste becomes an obstacle in the form of Mouni’s uncle Narasimham (Rajeev Kanakala). Mouni is dead-scared of Narasimham for a strong reason already. How Revanth and Mouni overcome these issues to keep their ‘love’ alive forms the ‘story’.

Performances

Naga Chaitanya appears as a Telangana chap and he tried the slang too. His accent won’t sound great and it is neither bad. Picking a movie that is partially based on dance is an adventure to Naga Chaitanya who is not excellent at it. But he improved his moves too and did well, though we cannot compare it to that of Sai Pallavi. While he improved his acting skills too, the performance can’t be blamed for a poor plot.

Sai Pallavi has the ease and presence on the screen that she eats up everyone else in the frame and all the spotlights turn to her. As always she did very well in the role she was given. Needless to say, her dances are a treat to the eyes. Chay says ‘Varshamlo Nemali lekka’ after she dances for the first time for the ‘Evo Evo’ song on the terrace..and the comparison is so apt. Sai Pallavi did what she was told to do as Mouni, except that her role was not written well.

Rajeev Kanakala is okay as a baddie and he does not have much to perform here. Gangavva brings few laughs though she appears in very few scenes. Mail fame Gouri Priya will be there in many scenes in the first half but was not given a prominent role. Devayani is fine as Sai Pallavi’s mother. Uttej and others are fine in their roles.

Technicalities

Love Story’s songs are a big success already. Saranga Dariya is very colorful and great to watch. Almost all songs are good. Background music is fine. Cinematography is also fine. Editing could have been better. The screenplay is alright. Run time of 156 minutes is a culprit, as we can feel a slow down in some places in first half and many in second half.

Sai Pallavi Songs

Thumbs Down

Clumsy and half baked story Lag in Second half Abrupt ending

Sekhar Kammula’s previous movies earning him fame for making classy stuff that attracts overseas and class audiences mostly. Love Story too appeared to be one of his marks, but it is a complete misfire. A very good performer in the female lead, good songs, Telangana backdrop, and many other factors made it look like a Kammula movie, but the story itself with too many clumsy conflicts lost it big time.

A lower-casted youngster falling for an upper-casted girl is not uncommon for many film stories off late. But both Chay and Sai Pallavi’s roles here are matured enough to understand the consequences and they act accordingly. While the love story in the first half is mostly about dance and the institute, the scenes of discrimination and insult also were shown.

The love track between Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi is just a song and few scenes, which look artificial mostly. Before we could find depth in their love story, the caste discrimination scenes come up. The scenes where he was told that business is not for folks from a lower caste, don’t make sense at a later point as the aspirations to prove himself in the same business vanish into the thin air.

The lead role shuts down all his dreams and leaves for Dubai to work for odd jobs there. The typical Dubai kind of scenes like finding a small room to stay, wearing an apron to work for a daily job, walking in the sands give us the feels of peak monotony and cliche.

While the lovers try to find a way to get married with the caste-based hurdles, the point of child molestation comes up, which the director keeps under the wraps until pre-climax. The director fails to justify the love story part, just like he did with the caste-based discrimination and child molestation. He picked too many conflicts in which he could coordinate between none.

While the clumsy merry-go-round of multiple issues goes on, the director walks us out with an abrupt ending where the protagonist puts an end to everybody’s villain after uttering some strong dialogues and throwing some punches. The Love Story is an outdated inter-caste love story that also has a point of ‘me too’, but justifies no point by the end.

Love Story does not look like the work of the director who delivered a cult-like Leader or a classic like Fidaa, not even close.

Bottom line: Age Old Love Story

Rating: 2.75 /5

Adam Sandler Hasn’t Changed. Have We?

Netflix’s love you , sandler’s first comedy special in years, does something unusual..

It needs to be said that, despite his current rehabilitation in the pop culture ferment, Adam Sandler has mostly starred in slop. I, like almost every other 33-year-old white guy on the planet, retain some fondness for the schlocky 88-minute comedies he produced in the late ’90s and early aughts: Billy Madison, The Waterboy, Big Daddy . But my affection for those films has much more to do with my wistfulness for a bygone, outrageously Y2K form of cable-TV osmosis that is impossible to replicate in the streaming age. It is 10 p.m. on a steaming summer night. You and your friends are a six-pack deep and crunched into an unventilated basement den. Someone flips on Spike TV. Happy Gilmore is on. Life has never been better.

This is the world in which Sandler became a superstar, and I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that I haven’t revisited much of his work since I left for college. The jokes weren’t great then, and they’ve only gotten worse since. Sandler put us all through a truly grotesque late prime; I think even his most ardent defenders would struggle to go to bat for Click , or Pixels, or the Boschian nightmare of Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2. ( Ten percent and 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.) The Sandler cinematic formula wore thin quickly. There were a lot of fart jokes. A lot of poop jokes. And a potentially lethal dose of Rob Schneider.

And yet, as Sandler enters his late 50s, all of his crimes have been miraculously washed away. He has flipped his fortunes, crossing over into bona fide Hollywood royalty status. Last year, he won the Mark Twain Prize . Soon he’ll be starring in a Noah Baumbach movie . And Love You, his first stand-up special in six years, debuted on Netflix this week and has yet to leave the platform’s top 10 most-watched programs—undoubtedly bolstered by strong endorsements from needle-movers like the New York Times . The comedy special is being framed as the next chapter in Sandler’s ongoing cultural coronation: more grist for the glow-up. Meanwhile, halfway through it, Sandler concludes a story about a genie who will only grant him three wishes if he gives a handjob to a man who just suffered explosive diarrhea in an airport bathroom. He hasn’t changed. Have we?

Sandler is adroit enough to drape Love You with the spoils of his newfound critical respect. The director here is Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers, who cast Sandler as the degenerate gambler Howard Ratner in the 2019 freak-out hit Uncut Gems . Sandler was the perfect complement to the Safdies’ one-of-a-kind sensory delirium—a world where everyone is perpetually taking a phone call in a crowded nightclub—and Josh Safdie sprinkles a little bit of that chaos into the preamble of this special. Sandler pushes through fans and hangers-on in the crowded halls backstage, everyone looking warmed-over, with gaping pores, under the piercing fluorescent lights. The venue resembles a dilapidated high school theater: cloistered and visibly uncomfortable, always threatening to fall apart. And it does, frequently. In one surreal sequence, a dog gallops toward the front row from the bowels of the green room, interrupting Sandler’s joke before getting scooped up by a mindful PA. (Those mishaps were planned, but Sandler didn’t know the shape they’d take until they happened.) The results bring to mind some of the edgier, more auteur-ish comedians on the circuit: Conner O’Malley, Sarah Sherman, Maria Bamford , all of whom are unlikely to appear in a Grown Ups 3.

But when it comes to the jokes, Sandler remains deep in his comfort zone. There is a bit about accidentally sending a dick pic to Al Pacino. He sings a song about his sister’s ugly new boyfriend. He blames the imaginary illiterate brother of “Merriam-Webster” for the spelling of words like “answer” and “enough.” There is an extended riff about how he applies Botox to his penis, thus removing its wrinkles, leading to a conundrum where the men in the YMCA bathroom believe Sandler is erect when he is, in fact, fully flaccid. It is not brainy material, but these stories are delivered amicably, in a stream-of-consciousness blabber, without a shred of grievance or any discernible political posture bleeding in from the margins. Sandler is unapologetic about the things he finds funny. That was true in 1995, and it’s still true in 2024.

And frankly, that might be what’s animating the ongoing Sandler renaissance. Nearly all his peers—particularly his ’90s-era Saturday Night Live compatriots—are heavily invested in what they perceive as a war for the soul of comedy. It has led to some exhausting, redundant seminars posing as stand-up specials. I never needed to hear Chris Rock say the word “woke,” but he still has dedicated swaths of his Netflix oeuvre to debating the ideology. Sandler should ostensibly fit the same mold: He’s a man in his late 50s who can credit much of his success to the lowbrow territory in which his filmography treads. And yet, if he feels under siege by sensitive snowflakes or whatever, Sandler scarcely shows it. Instead of fighting a culture war, he’s dedicated his craftsmanship to becoming astonishingly effective at telling the same dick, poop, and fart jokes he’s been telling for decades—trimming the fat, reforging their elements, until they land with something you could call grace. (It’s no wonder that these punchlines are at their most effective when they’re presented within the confines of a stripped-down stand-up set rather than a bloated ensemble film.) Sandler has checked out of the conversation that has made the consumption of contemporary comedy so litigious and annoying. There is a deftness in all this stupidity.

At the end of Love You, Sandler picks up a guitar and plays a song that functions like a “We Didn’t Start the Fire” for the people who have inspired him throughout his career. He daisy-chains together the names of comedy royalty—Lucille Ball, Sam Kinison, Lorne Michaels, Jim Downey—before eventually landing on the gut punch of the departed Norm Macdonald and Chris Farley. (Sandler performed a different tribute to Farley on a Saturday Night Live stint, which was another crucial component of his reclamation.) In the chorus, Sandler doesn’t sing about comedy’s ability to change the world, or expose grave injustices, or adjudicate political correctness once and for all. No, instead, Sandler asserts that comedy’s most profound social power is how it can make someone feel good, when they were previously feeling sad. It is a radically modest statement in a realm of performers who tend to take themselves a bit too seriously. Maybe we really have changed, after all.
