Exploring the benefits of AI in veterinary medicine and education

by Courtney Price, Texas A&M University

Researcher explores benefits of AI in veterinary medicine, education

A researcher at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) is discovering new ways for veterinarians to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools in both the clinic and the classroom.

Dr. Candice Chu, an assistant professor in the VMBS Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, has developed a study tool for veterinary students based on ChatGPT technology called VetClinPathGPT.

The tool helps students in learning clinical pathobiology, a field of veterinary medicine that focuses on disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention. Using the tool, students can "chat" with AI to ask questions about terms and concepts or even ask the tool to provide a list of study questions.

Chu has also published a list of ways for AI to increase efficiency and expand the abilities of educators and clinicians in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science .

"AI is a powerful assistant that can help clinicians, educators and students reduce the time they spend on repetitive work ," Chu said. "By reducing repetitive tasks, individuals can spend their time on the most important parts of their work, like completing assignments or helping students and patients."

Improving veterinary education with AI

Chu believes AI will become a regular part of the veterinary medicine classroom.

"Imagine having a microscope connected to a camera with AI capability, so students can look down at their slides and essentially have a clinical pathologist there to explain what they're seeing," Chu said. "They could ask the AI, 'What's that cell?' and it could tell them not only the type but also how to identify it.

"Veterinarians are in high demand and it's a good thing to have lots of students in the classroom," she said. "But one instructor cannot work with every student individually at the same time, so in my ideal world, AI would be able to help with that."

For now, Chu is helping to bring AI to veterinary education by creating tools like VetClinPathGPT that provide students with a virtual study partner.

"One of the best ways for students to use AI is to upload their course readings to an AI tool and ask it to make study questions based on the text," she said. "Once you read a passage, you can test your knowledge or use the AI to help you prepare for an exam."

Educators can also use AI to reduce the time they spend on repetitive tasks like writing exam questions.

"The key to getting high-quality, relevant answers to your prompts is to make sure that the information uploaded to the AI is reliable," Chu said. "For example, VetClinPathGPT doesn't use just any information from the internet—it uses the eClinPath website, an online textbook developed by the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine."

The future of veterinary medicine

Chu also expects to start seeing AI used in clinical settings to help with tasks that take away time from working with patients, like record-keeping.

"It would be very helpful to have a tool that could go through medical records and pull examples from cases," Chu said. "Imagine having a tool that could fill out medical records while you're talking with a patient's owner."

While the technology for such things exists, the problem is making sure that the AI tool doesn't compromise the privacy of medical records.

"Training AI tools to accurately read patient medical records would mean needing to share medical records with a developer, which violates patient privacy laws," Chu said. "The same is true for a clinician who wants to use AI to identify important information in a patient's file. If you have to spend a lot of time redacting all of the personal information, you're probably just going to go through the records yourself."

But in Chu's opinion, it's only a matter of time before someone creates AI tools that meet the needs of hospitals, clinicians and their patients.

"There are already ways to build a custom version of ChatGPT and make it private so no one else can use it," she said. "Another option is to have an AI tool that only exists locally on your computer or your clinic's network."

A partnership, not a takeover

From Chu's perspective, using AI will always be a partnership between human and artificial intelligence.

"Neither are perfect on their own, so bringing them together increases our ability to diagnose, teach and learn," she said. "One thing I tell people is not to worry that AI will replace you; it's the person who knows how to use AI who will replace you. I think that in the future, knowing how to incorporate this technology will be a basic requirement to be an efficient and competitive veterinary educator in the job market."

In addition to her work on study tools, Chu is also partnering with the VMBS Gastrointestinal Laboratory and the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science on a machine learning project to see if AI can help diagnose acute pancreatitis in dogs.

She's also been invited to give a keynote lecture at the American College of Veterinary Radiology Scientific Conference this fall, and will share her research on AI at two other fall conferences—the Texas Taiwanese Biotechnology Association Symposium and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists Annual Meeting.

"This technology is still very new, so there are many opportunities for innovation," she said.

Description

PAPER 1: VETERINARY COMPUTER SOFTWARE

More veterinary clinics and hospitals are now using computers for day-to-day operations, and computer software companies are continuously developing and upgrading programs foruse in veterinary medicine. Knowledge of computers and computer software is becoming necessary for all hospital staff: the receptionists, hospital and office managers, the veterinarians, vet technicians, assistants, and kennel workers.Computers and specialized veterinary management software can improve efficiency by keeping up with inventory, printing labels and certificates, performing accounting, storing patientfiles, and so on. You’ll research three (3) different brands of veterinary management software. Compare and contrast these brands and write a research paper that includes, but isn’t limited to, thefollowing information:

1. Names of the three brands of software that you’ve chosen and a brief description of each of them

2. Information about the companies who make the software

3. Pros and cons of each software package—What does each program do or not do?

4. How are technical support issues handled?

5. Discuss what kind of contingency plan each companyhas to handle system failure/recovery

6. Is installation of the server and other hardware provided?

7. Are updates to software automatic, or do they need to be requested?

8. Include office functions, like reminders, accounting, billing, inventory control, and so on

9. Is the system able to import lab results directly from the laboratory into the medical record?

10. If describing a cloud-based software system, you’re still required to provide all of the information above as it relates to the cloud-based system.

PAPER 2: INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

Veterinary technicians are inundated with questions every day. These questions come from clients and coworkers. Because of this, veterinary technicians need to be good listeners and good communicators. In your own words, describe techniques for being a good listener. What would you do to clarify what a client or coworker is saying to you? Also, describe some ways that you can communicate so that a client or coworker will listen to and fully understand what you’re saying. Give examples that relate to dealing with clients/coworkers in a hospital setting: discharging a surgical patient, euthanasia, and so on.

Be sure to include

  • Body language
  • Nonverbal communication/gestures (including somepossible cultural differences that might arise)
  • Paraphrasing
  • Eye contact
  • Discrimination and prejudices
  • Patient records/handouts and brochures
  • Any other pertinent information you can think of

PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS

1. Use a word processing program, like Word, Word Perfect, or Open Office. The research papers must be typewritten.

Explanation & Answer

veterinary software research paper

Hello buddy, below is a complete assignment. Kindly go through it and let me know of any necessary concern or need for clarification. Thank you Running Head: VETERINARY OFFICE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT Veterinary Office Management Research Project: Veterinary Software Student’s Name Student’s Number Date 1 VETERINARY OFFICE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT 2 Veterinary Office Management Research Project: Veterinary Software Introduction Veterinarians are reaping the most out of the current technological advancement by using veterinary management software in the management of patient info, scheduling, and treatment planning (Thrusfield, 2018). They also use the software in performing certain functions of back office like accounting. For the above reason, software firms are busy developing and managing software applications as well as programs, which clinics and hospitals can utilize for veterinary medicine purposes. The software applications often improve the performance by storing the patient info, updating inventories, and printing labels and certificates (Veterinary Economics, n.d.). The paper seeks to review various types of brand software applied in veterinary medicine by analyzing their pros, cons, and technical support among other technological issues that pertain specific brands. 1. Avimark Avimark is one of the leading firms that offer veterinary software. There are more 10, 000 clinics which operate on Avimark. Since the launch of the first Avimark veterinary software in 1988, the company has up to today offered several high-quality software to the veterinary industry (Thrusfield, 2018). Avimark as a Veterinary Management Software ranks among the best veterinary software in the world. Pros Avimark is very user-friendly. The software is robust and powerful at a modest price. It is easy to install, and its use is convenient. Avimark is adequately scalable as clinics grow and are powerful enough to manage all the practices. The software comes with a back-up of a technical VETERINARY OFFICE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT 3 supporting team, which enables customers to communicate with friendly and helpful support. Most importantly, Avimark can import patient’s lab results from the labs to the patients’ records. Cons The main limitation of Avimark is that the company charges technical support fee. However, the fee takes care of the software updates (Younker & Ribaric, 2017). The brand does not provide the user with office functions and reminders. This factor raises the cost of the software. Technical support working hours are limited, which makes it hard to enjoy the software. Customer support The firm offers technical support via emails, phone, remote-assistance, and online chats (Younker & Ribaric, 2017). Contingency plans Avimark offers a means of backing up firm’s data to address issues of system failure. It discourages clients from using tapes or scheduled back-ups to mitigate the risk of file corruption an offers online data back-up (Veterinary Economics, n.d.). The brand comes with a manual for back-up. It also offers to restore services where the data is retrieved from the secondary file back to the system. The Avimark support assists in system restoration in case of failure. 1. eVetPractice As a cloud-based management solution, even practice offers veterinary clinics and mobile practitioners a centralized platform for managing appointment reminders, EMR (Electronic Medical Records), and online payments. Based in Athens and started in 2011, eVetPractice VETERINARY OFFICE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH PROJECT 4 among the fastest-growing cloud solut...

Veterinary Computer Software

Instructions There are two papers in this research project. Both research papers are required.

Paper 1: Veterinary Computer Software Goals Identify the various types of veterinary software programs that are available. Explain the use and benefits of veterinary software programs in practice. Report the pros and cons of different programs. Categorize and examine the features of various programs. Evaluate your research to determine which programs may provide the best service in a veterinary practice. Instructions Many veterinary clinics and hospitals rely heavily on computers for day-to-day operations. Computer software companies are constantly developing and upgrading programs for use in veterinary medicine.

Imagine you’re the head veterinary technician working in a multidoctor veterinary practice. The practice owner is considering upgrading the outdated invoicing software and paper medical records, wanting to replace them with veterinary management software that can perform a wide variety of management functions.

The practice owner wants each member of the veterinary team to gather information on two different brands of veterinary management software. Each team member will compile his or her information into a written report, which will be given to the practice owner and practice manager to help them make their decision.

As the head technician, you’re given the first choice on which software brands to research. Select two different brands of veterinary management software. Research each software brand, paying attention to the items in the following list, and then write a research paper that compares and contrasts the two software brands, including (but not limiting your writing to) the following information:

Name the two brands of software that you’ve chosen, and give a brief description of each of them. Include information about the companies that make the software. What are some benefits for a practice using a software program? List office features and functions, as well as pros and cons of each software package—what does each program do, or not do? How are technical support issues handled? How is loss of data prevented in each type of program? Is this a cloud- or server-based program? What hardware or software might be required? Is training provided? In what ways? Are laboratory and imaging results imported? Provide details on those that are compatible with the software program being discussed. Paper 2: Interpersonal Communication As a veterinary technician, you’ll be inundated with questions every day. These questions come from clients and coworkers. To handle these questions, it’s important that you be both a good listener and a good communicator.

Goals List and define the four elements of communication. Identify the methods for effectively communicating with others. Apply knowledge of proper communication methods to client and colleague interactions in a veterinary practice. Determine the importance of using and observing verbal and nonverbal communication. Prepare yourself to work with clients and coworkers as part of the patient care team. Establish adequate communication skills for use in a veterinary setting. Instructions Describe techniques for being a good listener. What can you do to clarify what a client or coworker is saying to you? Also, describe some ways you can communicate clearly so a client or coworker will not only listen to you but fully understand what you’re saying.

Be sure to include the following:

Body language Nonverbal communication/gestures (including possible cultural differences that might arise) Paraphrasing Eye contact Discrimination and prejudices Patient records/handouts and brochures Any other pertinent information you deem important Next, provide at least two specific scenarios that relate to dealing with others in a hospital setting, and how and why you might use the previously mentioned techniques in these scenarios. Be sure to include multiple examples from the list above. Describe how those techniques would be used in your scenarios. These examples may include conflict with a coworker, conflict with an employee, dealing with a difficult client, or having an emotional conversation with a client.

Project Specifications Your project must be submitted as a Word document (.docx, .doc)*. Each title page should contain the following information: The title: Veterinary Office Management Research Project Your name Your student number The date your project was submitted Each paper should be easy to read with appropriate font, double spacing, and correct spelling, grammar, and sentence and paragraph structure. You should use proper APA format for your reference page and in-text citations. The recommended length is 2–4 pages per paper, excluding title and reference pages. Each research paper should include at least three references. The information must be supported by trusted veterinary medical publications and websites. You can use your Penn Foster Veterinary Office Management courses for assistance, but they should not be your main source of data. Don’t use sites such as Wikipedia. If you don’t have prior experience writing research papers, the Penn Foster Library offers assistance in writing a research paper and citing references. Plagiarism is taking any part of a published piece of work and using it as your own. This also applies to those sections where you might change the wording slightly, or periodically interject personal comments. This also applies to sections in which whole paragraphs or pages were quoted from a source. Plagiarism is unacceptable at Penn Foster College. This is a reminder of the expectation to which all Penn Foster College students are held. Per your Student Handbook, students are expected to conduct themselves with the highest academic and ethical standards. Failure to do so results in disciplinary action. Be sure you’re properly citing your resources in APA format. More information about plagiarism, and properly citing in APA format, can be found in the Penn Foster Library, your Information Literacy course, and your English Composition course. Grading Criteria Your research project will be graded according to the following guidelines:
