Step 1: Write your executive summary

Though this will be the first page of your business plan , we recommend you actually write the executive summary last. That’s because an executive summary highlights what’s to come in the business plan but in a more condensed fashion.

An executive summary gives stakeholders who are reading your business plan the key points quickly without having to comb through pages and pages. Be sure to cover each successive point in a concise manner, and include as much data as necessary to support your claims.

You’ll cover other things too, but answer these basic questions in your executive summary:

  • Idea: What’s your business concept? What problem does your business solve? What are your business goals?
  • Product: What’s your product/service and how is it different?
  • Market: Who’s your audience? How will you reach customers?
  • Finance: How much will your idea cost? And if you’re seeking funding, how much money do you need? How much do you expect to earn? If you’ve already started, where is your revenue at now?

Step 2: Do your market research homework

The next step in writing a business plan is to conduct market research . This involves gathering information about your target market (or customer persona), your competition, and the industry as a whole. You can use a variety of research methods such as surveys, focus groups, and online research to gather this information. Your method may be formal or more casual, just make sure that you’re getting good data back.

This research will help you to understand the needs of your target market and the potential demand for your product or service—essential aspects of starting and growing a successful business.

Step 6: Crunch the numbers

These financial projections will give investors and lenders an understanding of the financial health of your business and the potential return on investment.

Once you’ve completed everything, it's time to finalize your business plan. This involves reviewing and editing your plan to ensure that it is clear, concise, and easy to understand.

Are you dreading writing a business plan and feeling unqualified to do it yourself? If so, that’s totally normal. Writing a business plan is hard work! That’s why first-time business owners, not to mention experienced entrepreneurs, often hire professionals to do the job for them.  

The price of a business plan varies depending on a variety of factors, and this guide lays out all your options for creating the kind of excellent business plan your new venture deserves. 

Search online and you’ll quickly find business plan templates and software to guide you through the process. The main advantage of crafting your own business plan is that you’ll learn a great deal about your business as you do the work, including operations, management, financials, marketing and more.  

And that knowledge could prove to be the difference between success and failure. But if you do go this route, it’s wise to have a knowledgeable person review the plan for you and make sure it’s all good. If you’re not a writer, you also might want to have an editor go over it as well. 

This option will likely cost between $0 and $400, for travel, printing and materials. 

  • Freelancers

Finding freelancers to write a business plan is another option. You can find them online and you’ll pay anywhere from $200 to $2,000, depending on the length and depth of the plan. At the lower end of that scale, you’ll do the vast majority of research and preparation, which you’ll then hand over to the freelancer to put it all together into a well written plan. 

At the higher end of that price range, you should be able to find freelancers who will do the research and deliver something like a professional business plan. But if you’re looking for venture capital, this is probably not the wisest route. 

  • Consultants

A professional business plan firm or consultancy is likely to do a great job, but it will cost you a pretty penny – perhaps $10,000 or more. But you’ll also get a great deal of guidance when it comes to market research , strategy, and financials. You’ll work closely with the pros to structure and develop the plan and learn from their professional expertise. 

This route will give you a plan that you can present to any investor or lender, underscoring your seriousness and strongly making your business case. If you can’t afford this option, you could go the DIY route and have a professional review it and make recommendations, which would cost much less. 

  • Which Option Should You Choose?

If you don’t expect to look for funding, the DIY route is a smart move as you’ll gain so much valuable knowledge. If you plan to apply for a business loan, you may want to go with a high-end freelancer, as you should end up with a relatively polished business plan that will suffice for lenders.

If you hope to attract investor capital, professional assistance is the best way to go. It will be costly, but it should turn out to be a worthwhile investment. 

Before you make your decision, be sure to look into what’s available in terms of local resources. You might have a small business development center in your area that can provide useful guidance or even review your business plan for free.

What will it cost to start your business? This is a key question for anyone thinking about starting out on their own. You’ll want to spend some time figuring this out so you know how much money you need to raise and whether you can afford to get your business off the ground.

Most importantly, you’ll want to figure out how much cash you’re going to need in the bank to keep your business afloat as you grow your sales during the early days of your business. 

Typical startup costs can vary depending on whether you’re operating a  brick-and-mortar store, online store, or service operation . However, a common theme is that launching a successful business requires preparation.

And while you may not know exactly what those expenses will be, you can and should begin researching and estimating what it will cost to start your business.

  • How to determine your startup costs

Like when developing your  business plan , or  forecasting  your initial sales, it’s a mixture of  market research ,  testing , and informed guessing. Looking at your competitors is a good starting point. Once you feel your initial estimates are in the ballpark, you can start to get more specific by making these three simple lists.

1. Startup expenses

These are expenses that happen before you launch and start bringing in any revenue. Here are some examples:

  • Permits and Licenses: Every business needs a license to operate, just like a driver needs one to drive. Costs vary depending on industry and location.
  • Legal Fees: Getting your business structure set up (sole proprietorship, LLC, etc.) might involve consulting a lawyer and at least will involve the basic business formation fees.
  • Insurance: Accidents happen, and insurance protects your business from unforeseen bumps.
  • Marketing and Branding: The ways to spread the word about your product or service. They could involve creating a website, creating business cards, or promoting social media.
  • Office Supplies : Pens, paperclips, that all-important stapler – the essentials to keep your business humming.
  • Rent/Lease: If you need to rent space for your business before you start selling, include those expenses in your list as well.

2. Startup assets

Next, calculate the total you need to spend on assets to get your business off the ground. Assets are larger purchases that have long-term value. They’re typically significant items that you could resell later if you needed or wanted to.

Here are a few examples:

  • Equipment:  Think ovens for a bakery, cameras for a photography business, or computers for a tech startup.
  • Inventory:  If you’re selling products, you’ll need to stock up before opening your doors (or your online store).
  • Furniture and Decorations:  Desks, chairs, that comfy couch in the waiting room – creating a functional and inviting workspace might involve some upfront investment.
  • Vehicles: If your business requires a vehicle to deliver your product or service, be sure to account for that purchase here.

Why separate assets and expenses?

There’s a reason that you should separate costs into assets and expenses. Expenses are deductible against income, so they reduce taxable income. Assets, on the other hand, are not deductible against income.

By initially separating the two, you potentially save yourself money on taxes. Additionally, by accurately accounting for expenses, you can avoid overstating your assets on the balance sheet. While typically having more assets is a better look, having assets that are useless or unfounded only bloats your books and potentially makes them inaccurate. 

Listing these out separately is good practice when  starting a business  and leads into the final piece to consider when determining startup costs. 

3. Operating Expenses

Finally, figure out what it’s going to cost to keep your doors open until sales can cover expenses. Create a list that estimates monthly expenses, such as:

  • Payroll (including your own salary)
  • Marketing and advertising
  • Loan payments
  • Insurance premiums
  • Office supplies
  • Professional services
  • Travel costs
  • Shipping and distribution

Then, based on your revenue forecasts , calculate how many months it will take before your sales can cover all those monthly expenses. Multiply that number of months by your monthly operating expenses to determine how much you’re going to need to cover operating expenses as your business starts.

This number is often called “ cash runway ” and is a critical number – you need enough cash to fund those early red ink months. This number is how much cash you need to have in your checking account when you open your doors for business.

Calculating how much startup cash you need

To figure out how much money you need to start your business, add the asset purchases, startup expenses, and operating expenses over your cash runway period. This is your total startup costs, and it’s better to overestimate than underestimate these costs.

It often makes sense to invest the time to build a slightly more detailed starting costs calculation. Assuming you start making some sales and those sales grow over time, your revenue will be able to help pay for some of your operating expenses. Ideally, your sales contribute more and more over time until you become profitable.

To do a more detailed calculation, you’ll want to invest the time in a detailed financial forecast where you can experiment with different scenarios. If you do this, you’ll be able to see how much it will cost to start your business with different revenue growth rates. You’ll also be able to experiment with different funding scenarios and what your business would look like with different types of loans.

  • Funding Starting Costs

You can cover starting costs on your own, or through a combination of loans and investments.

Many entrepreneurs decide they want to raise more cash than they need so they’ll have money left over for contingencies. While that makes good sense when you can do it, it is difficult to explain that to investors. Outside investors don’t want to give you more money than you need, because it’s their money.

You may see experts who recommend having anywhere from six months to a year’s worth of expenses covered, with your starting cash. That’s nice in concept and would be great for peace of mind, but it’s rarely practical. And it interferes with your estimates and dilutes their value.

Of course, startup financing isn’t technically part of the starting costs estimate. But in the real world, to get started, you need to estimate the starting costs and determine what startup financing will be necessary to cover them. The type of financing you pursue may alter your startup or ongoing costs in a given period, so it’s important to consider this upfront.

Here are common financing options to consider:

  • Investment : What you or someone else puts into the company. It ends up as paid-in capital in the  balance sheet . This is the classic concept of business investment, taking ownership in a company, risking money in the hope of gaining money later.
  • Accounts payable : Debts that are outstanding or need to be paid after a certain time according to your balance sheet. Generally, this means credit-card debt. This number becomes the starting balance of your balance sheet.
  • Current borrowing : Standard debt, borrowing from banks,  Small Business Administration , or other current borrowing.
  • Other current liabilities : Additional liabilities that don’t have interest charges. This is where you put loans from founders, family members, or friends. We aren’t recommending interest-free loans for financing, by the way, but when they happen, this is where they go.
  • Long-term liabilities : Long-term debt or long-term loans.
  • Other considerations for estimating startup costs

Pre-launch versus normal operations

With our definition of starting costs, the launch date is the defining point. Rent and payroll expenses before launch are considered startup expenses. The same expenses after launch are considered operating or ongoing expenses.

Many companies also incur some payroll expenses before launch because they need to hire people to train before launch, develop their website, stock shelves, and so forth.

The same defining point affects assets as well. For example, amounts in inventory purchased before launch and available at launch are included in starting assets. Inventory purchased after launch will affect  cash flow , and the balance sheet; but isn’t considered part of the starting costs.

So, be sure to accurately define the cutoff for startup costs and operating expenses. Again, by outlining everything within specific categories, this transition should be simple and easy to keep track of.

Your launch month will likely be the start of your business’s fiscal year

The establishment of a standard fiscal year plays a role in your analysis. U.S. tax code allows most businesses to manage taxes based on a fiscal year, which can be any series of 12 months, not necessarily January through December.

It can be convenient to establish the fiscal year as starting the same month that the business launches. In this case, the startup costs and startup funding match the fiscal year—and they happen in the time before the launch and beginning of the first operational fiscal year. The pre-launch transactions are reported as a separate tax year, even if they occur in just a few months, or even one month. So the last month of the pre-launch period is also the last month of the fiscal year.

  • Aim for long-term success by estimating startup costs

Make sure you’ve considered every aspect of your business and included related costs. You’ll have a better chance at securing loans, attracting investors, estimating profits, and understanding the cash runway of your business.

The more accurately you layout startup costs and make adjustments as you incur them, the more accurate vision you’ll have for the immediate future of your business.

‘How much does a business plan cost?’ is a typical question. Every entrepreneur and business owner asks about it sooner or later, which is not surprising because business planning is one of those things you can’t really escape when you run a business.

So, how much does it cost to write a business plan? A lot. Is it worth the investment? Not really.

Long story short, the average cost of a business plan tends to be high if you rely on someone external to do the job for you. Professional business plan writers cost a significant amount of money because the exercise is time-consuming, hence a typical business plan cost estimate reaching five to ten thousand dollars isn’t exceptional. Still, is the expense necessary? No, it’s not.

We dedicated an article to  business plan consultants and their efficiency for your business , so we won’t dig into this question right here. However, we’ll look at cost-effectiveness, and we’ll give you tips to try and lower your bill… under a hundred dollars! Oh yeah.

As we’ve said in the introduction, it’s typical to see a business plan cost between five and ten thousand dollars for a small business. Of course, they would cost a lot more for larger companies, especially if large consulting firms got involved in the equation.

Nothing is surprising there if you think about it.

Think about it!

How to charge for a business plan?

Time? Expertise?

Writing this type of document involves a lot of market research ( because market analysis takes time). And it also takes a lot of strategic thinking.

In addition, coming up with a financial business plan (i.e. a financial strategy with reasonable financial projections) also takes work… you see the point.

Overall, the exercise tends to be time-consuming, and time is money, so the average business plan cost is high when a professional writer is involved. Of course, more affordable business plan writing services might offer better terms, but since price is value then chances are that a lower price will mean less research work, or beyond average writing skills – and you don’t want that either.

Beyond time-related matters though, the point is that business plan writers cost a lot of money because the value created by a business plan is usually very high. It’s a strategic key to unlocking funding, after all. Hence some business plan writing services cost money proportionately to the value they provide. It’s as simple as that.

Wait… but why do I need a business plan in the first place?

Good question – thanks for asking! Regardless of its cost, the reality is that a business plan can be a genuine asset for your business – for several reasons.

Again, we explored that discussion in a dedicated article that looks at  what a business plan is for  and how it can support your business, so we won’t get into the details here.

Still, the big idea is that working on a business plan involves a vital business planning exercise. That planning exercise, in turn, gives you a huge opportunity to take some operational perspective on your business.

Going through the intellectual process gives you an opportunity to think about your market, and it pushes you to consider what demand you are matching. Like, for real, because what investors want to know is whether or not your business proposal is answering a demand.u

The exercise also gives you a way to think about your business like an investor or banker would (for, depending on your needs, a low investment, a small business loan, etc.). And that helps with building an adapted pitch that gets people on board.

Okay, but I can do all that by myself, right?

Yes, of course! That’s why we’re here, aren’t we?

Our perspective on business plan-writing is very clear: you should be writing your business plan yourself. That’s it, period.

Now, of course, when we say “yourself”, you can obviously be a little creative.

If your business is a small business and you don’t have a big team around you, then you’ll have to do the job yourself. But perhaps you’ll have friends around willing to help you brainstorm, so you don’t have to do everything alone?

Or perhaps your business is not that small, and someone on your team has an eye on your finances. In that case, you could let that person manage the thinking phase and brainstorm together to add more perspective on what’s possible or not.

Either way,  brainstorming with one of our business coaches  is also a possibility. They won’t be doing the business plan for you, but they’ll have the right questions and concepts in mind to challenge you and get you to sharpen your storytelling.

For instance…

For instance, do you have a profitable business idea? Do you make money already? If not, when will you start making money? Do you have low startup costs, or do you need some significant funding to get things going?

Is your business facing significant competition? Is it aligned with current small business trends, or is it different?

You get the point – the idea is not to simply have a cool business name with cool business ideas, sexy business cards, and revolutionary products that have a chance to sell.

You want to take the exercise as a chance to start planning business developments for good.

How much does a business plan cost if I work on it myself?

Having said that, how much would a business plan cost if you were to work on it yourself? Simple:  about a hundred dollars .

Of course, you would have to spend some time on the exercise. There’s no doubt about that. But, still, the money investment that should come out of your pocket doesn’t need to be higher than a hundred dollars.

At the end of the day, business plans need to follow a specific template and code accepted (and expected) by the business community. Hence  knowing about business plan outlines and formatting  is all you need.

Some sell that type of knowledge for a fortune, but why pay that much when you can avoid such a cost?

Let us be clear here – the point is not to write a low cost business plan that will look cheap and dull just to cut the costs! No! The point is to catch the concept and expectations and produce the proper document based on the right thinking. And that’s a lot easier than you think!

Three good reasons to keep your business plan cost as low as possible.

There are also a few reasons  not  to spend a fortune on business plan costs. Too often, in fact, small business owners and entrepreneurs make the wrong decisions and end up paying their plans way beyond the cheque they have to sign.

You don’t want to waste your time on theoretical fluff.

First, and as we’ve said before, working on a business plan takes time because the exercise involves a lot of strategic thinking.

Yet, the final document you’ll obtain will be – at best – a snapshot, at a given moment, of what you are planning on doing over the following years. So, NOT spending too much time on the exercise is beyond wise.

You could do tons of things with ‘ifs’ but ultimately, just ‘ifs’ won’t do anything for your business.

The point, said differently, is to consider options and develop a direction you’ll be able to follow. It should  not  be a matter of spending months on a document to the detriment of your actual business. Can you see the difference?

They want you to have a business with a plan (beyond just a business plan).

Second, you’ll want to keep your business plan cost down because your readers (investors, bankers, partners) are not interested in just a pdf document.

As we often say, they don’t give a damn about a pdf (excuse our French). However, they want to see that you have a business and a plan to get that business to its next step within a reasonable amount of time. Usually two, three, or five years.

So? The more you spend on setting a theory plan, the more expensive it becomes without much of a reason. Too bad!

You want to make the most of the insights you can get.

The third reason why you’ll want to keep your business plan cost down is that, ultimately, you want to make the most of the insights you’ll obtain, without spending ages on that, because trying and testing is a lot more critical than guestimating.

Have you ever heard of the ‘lean’ type of mindset? In short, instead of spending a million on a great idea, spend a little and test, then adapt and test again until you obtain something that matches demand.

That makes sense, right?

It does! And the same goes for your own business plan.

The point of your business plan is not to come up with some B.S guesstimates. Instead, it is to tell a story about your business and use that story to get people on board with you.

Limiting the time you spend drafting your document keeps your business plan cost down and forces you to think sharp and develop insights you can use now. Try!

In particular, follow the  typical business plan outline and formatting everyone expects you to follow . Otherwise, you’ll burn yourself.

Also, keep in mind that  a business plan should be short . There’s no need to write a novel here. Just build something around a limited amount of pages with a clear executive summary, provide suitable tables and focus on building a story investors will want to read, listen and talk about.

Be careful about one page business plans , however. They imply a lot more work than people think and could have a disastrous effect on your business if not handled properly.

As we’ve said before, business plan writers cost a lot of money and business plan consulting professionals are not relevant unless your business is already big. Therefore, the best way to keep your business plan cost down is to work on it yourself.

Second, you probably won’t be able to defend a plan that you have not written yourself because the logic behind it won’t be yours. People will grill you and your consulting company won’t be there to pitch everything marketing and finance for you – don’t take that kind of risk!

Nationwide has doubled its maximum personal loan amount from £25,000 to £50,000. 

The building society said its decision would help customers cope with rising construction costs, with many turning to loans to help with home improvement projects. 

More than four in 10 households were hoping to start renovation plans and the end of this month, it said. 

But, with recent forecasts predicting a 15% uplift in building costs over the next five years, they could be facing much steeper bills. 

"With the impact of inflation and other external pressures, the costs of construction have seen significant increases in recent years," said head of personal loans at Nationwide Darren Bailey. 

"However, we recognise many people will want to continue with the home improvement plans, even if that means they have downscaled their plans to accommodate their budget.

"Our increased maximum personal loan size of £50,000 means we have an option to suit everyone." 

The increased loan amount will be available to Nationwide current account holders.

Customers can apply for the loan online, in branch or on the phone and receive the money the same day.

PrettyLittleThing has been reprimanded for posting "misleading" adverts, marking its ninth warning in four years. 

Complaints about the online fashion retailer were made following its Black Friday social media campaign in November. 

The Advertising Standards Authority investigated 15 posts on X, which mentioned several discounts ranging from 30% to 99%. 

PrettyLittleThing said the period had become well known to consumers in the UK as a time when business offered promotions. 

It also said its advertising and marketing was "reflective of what their customers wanted and expected", and "further terms and conditions were on their website".

However, the ASA found three issues with the campaign. 

It said some misled customers into believing all products were included in the promotion, when some were excluded. 

Others failed to specify when the deal ended, and some breached advertising rules with the "inclusion of closing dates from ads when promotional periods were shortened or extended". 

In previous rulings, the company was found to have: broken the ASA's rules on offence and responsibility by objectifying women; run social media partnerships with influencers that did not make clear they were ads; run promotions that had not been administered fairly.

"While one breach of our rules is one too many, the bulk of the rulings were between 2020-22," the ASA told the Money team.

"To date, two have been published in the last two years. We hope the downward trend in upheld rulings continues but will take action if we see any ongoing issues." 

Inflation is forecast to have fallen to around the Bank of England's 2% target in April - with an announcement at 7am on Wednesday.

A fall in the energy price cap at the start of April is a key reason - energy prices have been a driver of the huge price rises seen in the last two years.

The Bank itself forecast inflation could hit 2.1% for April - down from 3.2% in March and the 40-year high of 11.1% in October 2022.

Respected insights firm Pantheon Macroeconomics thinks it could hit 2% due to "four components"...

Industry figures released on Tuesday suggest food inflation is indeed falling...

The main upward driver of inflation in April was the price of petrol, which spiked during the month due to Iran-Israel tensions. 

Capital Economics also forecasts overall CPI could dip to 2% - and says we could see inflation at 1% later this year, lower than the BoE expects.

It thinks energy prices will keep falling and "that, in response to the previous falls in agricultural commodity prices, CPI food inflation will fall below zero". 

Inflation falls will influence how soon we get an interest rate cut - as rates are kept high in order to tame inflation by squeezing the economy.

The next Bank of England decision is on 20 June.

Pantheon says: "Markets are pricing a 60% chance of a rate cut in June and more than fully pricing one by August, so the key question is not whether the MPC will ease soon but how quickly it will cut again after the first reduction.

"We expect one cut per quarter to a 3.5% terminal rate, but with risks skewed to the BoE pausing temporarily at 4.0% to 4.5%."

Hotel Chocolat is to open 20 stores over the next 18 months and is expanding its online reach. 

The shops will open in retail parks and feature a different design concept. 

Speaking during Retail Gazette's Future Consumer Debate, the company's head of customer marketing, Amy Harman, said shoppers want to be able to see, smell and feel the chocolate they're buying. 

"That's very much what we’re looking to do in our stores," she said. 

Explaining the choice to target retail parks, she said that's where the footfall and demand is. 

"There's more intent with consumers. They're going for a day out and going for an experience," she added.

The announcement comes as the brand prepares to launch on TikTok shop in the coming weeks as it looks to expand its online audience. 

Dishoom has launched a legal battle over the cockney rhyming slang for curry. 

The restaurant chain, which can be found in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham, has asked for the term Ruby Murray to be freed up by the Intellectual Property Office. 

At the moment, a man named Tariq Aziz has the rights to the name for food and drink uses, with an IPO filing showing he registered the trademark in 2019. 

A search of the IPO site shows an application to revoke the trademark registration on the grounds that it has never been used was filed on 15 May by Dishoom Limited. 

Mr Aziz now has until 15 July to indicate whether he will offer a defence.

If he fails to do so, the trademark will be revoked and removed from the register. 

A Dishoom spokesperson told the Money team it doesn't believe the trademark's owner has ever used it. 

"There is a principle of 'use or lose it' in trademark law and we have therefore asked the UK IPO to remove the Ruby Murray mark from the register," they said. 

"Dishoom is not seeking to apply to register Ruby Murray in its own name; it wishes to remove the 'monopoly' on the use of Ruby Murray so it can be used freely by anyone when referring to curry." 

Dishoom does have a chicken ruby on its menu and in its cookbook and the Money team are big, big fans.

The International Monetary Fund has said the UK economy is heading for a "soft landing", but reiterated its message to Jeremy Hunt that he should not have cut National Insurance at the last two fiscal events.

In its annual check-up on the state of Britain's economy, the Washington-based Fund raised its forecast for gross domestic product growth this year from 0.5% to 0.7%, saying: "The UK economy is approaching a soft landing, with a recovery in growth expected in 2024, strengthening in 2025."

The Fund now expects inflation to come down to close to 2% in the coming months, and the Bank of England to cut interest rates by as much as three quarters of a percent this year, and then another percentage point next year.

The chancellor welcomed the Fund's Article IV report, saying: "Today's report clearly shows that independent international economists agree that the UK economy has turned a corner and is on course for a soft landing.

"The IMF have upgraded our growth for this year and forecast we will grow faster than any other large European country over the next six years - so it is time to shake off some of the unjustified pessimism about our prospects."

Government 'won't meet its debt target'

However, the IMF, which has warned the government explicitly in the past not to cut taxes too fast, in the face of rising spending projections in future, said the two 2p National Insurance contribution cuts at the last two fiscal events were a mistake.

"In light of the medium-term fiscal challenge", the report said, "staff would have recommended against the NIC rate cuts, given their significant cost."

The Fund's staff also believes the government is not on track to meet its main fiscal rule, which commits it to cutting the national debt in five years' time.

It believes net debt will carry on rising towards 97% of GDP in the following years, instead of falling back to 93% of GDP, as the Office for Budget Responsibility has forecast.

The Fund's double-edged report comes amid improving news for the UK.

Data released two weeks ago showed the country ended its short-lived recession with faster than expected growth in the first quarter of the year.

The Office for National Statistics is expected to announce tomorrow that inflation dropped close to the Bank of England's 2% target in April. That may enable the Bank to begin cutting interest rates from their 5.25% level in June or August.

Bank should speak more

The Fund's report contained a number of other recommendations for economic policy in the UK, including that the Bank of England should commit to more news conferences to explain its decisions, and that the government should consider imposing road charges to replace the revenue lost from fuel duty as electric cars become more predominant on UK roads.

For many Britons, retirement means moving somewhere new.

New analysis from relocation experts Property Guides has found the easiest locations for retirees, taking into account culture, visa requirements, cost and more. 

Landing in the number one spot is Ireland, with a lack of visa requirements, English-speaking residents and relatively "safe and happy" environment.

Spain, Portugal and Cyprus claim the next three spots on the list.

However, Spain is high on the minimum annual income requirement.

"Spain's is one of the most expensive. It is currently around €27,000 (£23,000) per year for the first applicant. Just over the border in Portugal, it is less than €8,500 per year. Turkey's is the cheapest, working out at a little over £5,000, while Italy requires over €30,000," Property Guides says.

Turkey also came out well for the low cost of living - unlike New Zealand.

European countries in general offer visas aimed specifically at those receiving pensions or investment incomes, according to Property Guides.

Commonwealth countries such as Australia and Canada, however, actively restrict those over 55 from moving there, even if they have a high passive income (income such as pensions, that doesn't require a job). 

It becomes easier if retirees have children who are already legal residents.

"Golden visas", which encourage wealthy people to invest in a country, are becoming less common. 

"Most countries are now cancelling their residential investment option, including Cyprus and Portugal, and Spain will soon be closing its own. However, for now, you can still get one in Spain, Greece and Turkey, for as little as a €250,000 property, and these we have judged the easiest to retire to."

Property Guides also looked at health services. They took rankings from a Legatum Prosperity Index. 

"Top scorers were Germany, Italy and France, in that order. Bottom of the pile was the USA."

The research noted that state pensions are not uprated for retirees in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

It also factored in "sunshine hours", with the top three being Cyprus, Portugal and the US. Ireland came last here.

Good news for motorists: oil prices are at a more than two-month low at $83.08 for a barrel of Brent crude oil.

Lower prices will likely filter down to the pumps in about 10 days.

But it's not such good news for those in the Brixham area.

The parent company of South West Water - who supplies the Devon area - said 15% don't have normal service.

Shares in Pennon Group, which also owns Bournemouth Water and Bristol Water, fell 6.7% after it reported flat pre-tax profit - £16.8m was recorded for the 2023-24 financial year, the same as 2022-23.

That's despite shareholders being in line for a higher payout of 44.37p  a share.

Drug maker AstraZeneca is one of the best-performing stocks on the FTSE 100 index of most valuable London-listed companies today.

After it announced it aims to double revenues by 2030, the share price rose 0.53%.

Grocery inflation has eased to its lowest level since October 2021, according to industry data released before official figures tipped to show a big dent in the overall pace of price increases in the economy.

Kantar Worldpanel - which tracks supermarket till prices, sales and market share - said its measure of grocery inflation slowed to 2.4% in the four weeks to 12 May from 3.2% the previous month.

The measure showed there is still upward pressure on the cost of items such as chilled fruit juices, drinks, sugar confectionery and chocolate confectionery - the latter a consequence of poor cocoa harvests.

Prices were still falling fastest in toilet tissues, butter and milk, the report said. It has previously pointed to wider assistance in falling costs from a price war among supermarkets.

Fraser McKevitt, Kantar's head of retail and consumer insight, said: "Grocery price inflation is gradually returning to what we would consider more normal levels. It's now sitting only 0.8 percentage points higher than the 10-year average of 1.6% between 2012 and 2021, which is just before prices began to climb.

"However, after nearly two and a half years of rapidly rising prices, it could take a bit longer for shoppers to unwind the habits they have learnt to help them manage the cost of living crisis."

Airbnb has the highest percentage of scam-related reviews, according to new data.

8.5% of comments left on the holiday-let site warned about scams, travel payment website PayFasto said.

Trivago came in second with 7.5%, Hotels.com third with 6.5%,  Myholidays in fourth with 6.1% and Booking.com fifth with 5.8%.

PayFasto says it is essential to do your research before booking a holiday online.

"Sometimes, if a deal looks way too good to be true, it often is," the company said. 

"Make sure you do research on the site and make sure they have legitimate ways to contact them if you were in the position where you needed to. If the site has no contact options, then this is certainly a red flag. "

It also warned holiday-goers to look for the ATOL (Air Travel Organisers' Licensing) scheme on websites, which guarantees customers protection separate from insurance when booking a package holiday that includes a flight.

No more wondering whether Netflix is going to show real live sports : The streamer now has a three-season deal with the most popular sports league in America — the NFL.

Netflix will show two NFL games on Christmas Day this year, plus "at least one" game on Christmas in 2025 and 2026, the company and the NFL announced Wednesday.

The deal will cost Netflix about $75 million per game, Bloomberg reported.

As we've discussed before, the logic for Netflix is simple here : While Netflix spent years insisting it didn't want to be in live sports, that was before it had an ad business, and live sports — particularly for the NFL — are considered the best way to aggregate an audience of ad watchers. Not coincidentally, Netflix is making its pitch to advertisers Wednesday in New York as part of the annual "upfront" pitch cycle.

And if you don't care about Netflix's ad sales and care only about watching NFL games, this simply means you need to have yet another network to watch games this fall. The league, which has become an expert at getting multiple media companies to pay it for games, already had deals with CBS, Fox, NBC, Disney/ESPN, and Amazon. Add another to the list.

Update: May 16, 2024 — Netflix will pay the NFL about $150 million to broadcast two NFL games this year, according to a Bloomberg report, not $150 million for each game.
