Pair of Dice, Para-Dice, Paradise: A Counter-Memorial to Victims of Police Brutality

This thesis is a proposal for a counter-memorial to victims of police brutality. The counter-memorial addresses scale by being both local and national, addresses materiality by privileging black aesthetics over politeness, addresses presence/absence by being more transient than permanent, and lastly, addresses site by being collective rather than singular. The result is an architecture that plays itself out over 18,000 police stations across America and the Washington Monument at the National Mall, two sites that are intrinsically linked through the architecture itself: negative “voids” at police stations whose positive counterparts aggregate at the Mall.

The critical question here is whether or not the system in which police brutality takes place can be reformed from within, or if people of color need to seek their utopia outside of these too-ironclad structures. This counter-memorial, when understood as an instrument of accountability (and therefore a real-time beacon that measures America’s capacity to either change or otherwise repeat the same violent patterns), ultimately provides us with an eventual answer.

The Magic Carpet

The Persian Carpet and the Persian Miniature painting have served as representation tools for the Persian Gar­den and the idea of paradise in Persian culture since antiquity. The word paradise derives from the Persian word pari-daeza meaning “walled enclosure.” The garden is always walled and stands in opposition to its landscape. This thesis investigates the idea of a contemporary image of paradise in the Iranian imagination by using carpets and miniature paintings as a tool for designing architecture. The garden, with its profound associations, provided a world of metaphor for the classical mystic poets. One of the manuscripts describing the Persian garden is called Haft Paykar – known as the Seven Domes – written by the 12th century Persian poet called Nizami. These types of manuscripts were made for Persian kings and contain within them miniature paintings and poetry describing battles, romances, tragedies, and triumphs that compromise Iran’s mythical and pre-Islamic history. The carpet is the repeating object in the minia­ture paintings of the manuscript. This thesis deconstructs the carpet in seven ways in order to digitally reconstruct the miniature paintings of the Seven Domes and the image of paradise with new techniques.

Up from the Past: Housing as Reparations on Chicago’s South Side

Do people know what the Illinois Institute of Technology and the South Side Planning Board and the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois and the United States government did to the Black Metropolis? If they know, do they care? Is it too hard to hold these entities accountable? If we held them accountable, could we find justice for those that were displaced? What would justice look like? What comes after Mecca? What types of spaces come after Mecca? Are they different than what was there before? Are they already there? What defines them? Can Reparations be housing? How many people are already doing this work? How many people are doing this work in academia? On the ground? Is the word “Reparations” dead? What do we draw from? Who is this for? Do white men own the legacy of the architecture that defined the Black Metropolis? How personal should this work be? How anecdotal? How quantitative? Does the design need to be inherently spatial? Or atmospheric? What should it feel like? How do I draw a feeling in Rhino? What are radical ways of looking? How do we reclaim racialized architecture? Do we? Should we even talk about these things?

Stacked Daydreams: Ceiling‐Scape for the Neglected

Elderly Care Adaptive Reuse of Hong Kong’s Vertical Factory

This thesis operates at the intersection of three domains of neglect:

• In the realm of building elements, the ceiling is often considered as an afterthought in the design process.
• Across building types, the vertical factory sits abandoned and anachronistic to its surroundings. It spiraled into disuse due to Hong Kong’s shifting economic focus.
• In society, the elderly are often subjected to social neglect, seen as a financial burden, and forced toward the fringes of society.

These parts experience obsolescence that led to indifference, and subsequently to boredom. I intend to draw the parallel of deterioration between the body of the elderly and the body of the vertical factory. Using a set of ceiling parts in the manner of prosthetics to reactivate the spaces into elderly care facilities, revert boredom to daydreams, and reimagine the concept of elderhood as an experimental second stage of life.

Citing the Native Genius

Reconstructing vernacular architecture in Hawai’i

For over 120 years, Americanization has tried to demean and erase Hawaiian language, culture, and architecture. In contemporary discourse, the vernacular architecture of Hawai’i is mostly referred to as ancient and vague. As with many Indigenous cultures, Western perspectives tend to fetishize or patronize the Hawaiian design aesthetic. Within this hierarchy of knowledge is a systemic assumption that Hawaiian vernacular architecture cannot effectively serve as a precedent resource for contemporary architects. Those who do reference the original vernacular will often classify it as utilitarian or resourceful. Regardless of intent, this narrative takes design agency away from the people involved. As a corrective, a respectful use of vernacular domestic form would benefit designers that are struggling to connect with Hawai’i’s cultural and architectural traditions.

Mining the European gaze and influence out of revivalist publications, archeological surveys and historic images reveal unique characteristics of Hawaiian domestic space. Geometric quotation and symbolic referencing are the foundational instruments in applying the discrete components, form, and organizational logic of the vernacular. The result is a design process that creates an amalgamation of decolonized form and contemporary technique. This residential project intends to revive Hawai’i’s erased domestic experience by revisiting the precolonial vernacular form and plan.

2020 Student Thesis Showcase - Part I

Have you ever wondered what students design in architecture school? A few years ago, we started an Instagram account called IMADETHAT_ to curate student work from across North America. Now, we have nearly 3,000 projects featured for you to view. In this series, we are featuring thesis projects of recent graduates to give you a glimpse into what architecture students create while in school. Each week, for the rest of the summer, we will be curating five projects that highlight unique aspects of design. In this week’s group, the research ranges from urban scale designs focused on climate change to a proposal for a new type of collective housing and so much in between. Redefining the Gradient by Kate Katz and Ryan Shaaban, Tulane University, M.Arch ‘20

Sea level rise has become a major concern for coastal cities due to the economic and cultural importance tied to their proximity to water. These cities have sustained their livelihood in low-lying elevations through the process of filling, bridging, and raising land over coastal ecosystems, replacing their ecological value with infrastructures focused on defining the edge between city and nature. Hard infrastructures have been employed to maintain urban landscapes but have minimal capacity for both human and non-human engagement due to their monofunctional applications focused on separating conditions rather than integrating them. They produce short-term gains with long-term consequences, replacing and restricting ecosystems and acting as physical barriers in a context defined by seasonal transition. 

To address the issues of hard infrastructure and sea level rise, this thesis proposes an alternative design strategy that incorporates the dynamic water system into the urban grid network. San Francisco was chosen as the location of study as it is a peninsula where a majority of the predicted inundation occurs on the eastern bayside. In this estuary, there were over 500 acres of ecologically rich tidal marshlands that were filled in during the late 1800s. To protect these new lands, the Embarcadero Sea Wall was built in 1916 and is now in a state of neglect. The city has set aside $5 billion for repairs but, instead of pouring more money into a broken system, we propose an investment in new multi-functional ecologically-responsive strategies. 

As sea levels rise, the city will be inundated with water, creating the opportunity to develop a new circulation system that maintains accessibility throughout areas located in the flood zone. In this proposal, we’ve designed a connective network where instance moments become moments of pause and relief to enjoy the new cityscape in a dynamic maritime district. 

On the lower level, paths widen to become plazas while on the upper level, they become breakout destinations which can connect to certain occupiable rooftops that are given to the public realm. The bases of carved canals become seeding grounds for plants and aquatic life as the water level rises over time. Buildings can protect high-risk floors through floodproofing and structural encasement combined with adaptive floorplates to maintain the use of lower levels. The floating walkway is composed of modular units that are buoyant, allowing the pedestrian paths to conform and fluctuate with diurnal tidal changes. The composition of the units creates street furniture and apertures to engage with the ecologies below while enabling a once restricted landscape of wetlands to take place within the city. 

The new vision of the public realm in this waterfront district hopes to shine an optimistic light on how we can live with nature once again as we deal with the consequences of climate change.

Unearthing the Black Aesthetic by Demar Matthews, Woodbury University, M.Arch ‘20

“Unearthing The Black Aesthetic” highlights South Central Los Angeles’s (or Black Los Angeles’s) unique positioning as a dynamic hub of Black culture and creativity. South Central is the densest population of African Americans west of the Mississippi. While every historically Black neighborhood in Los Angeles has experienced displacement, the neighborhood of Watts was hit particularly hard. As more and more Black Angelenos are forced for one reason or another to relocate, we are losing our history and connection to Los Angeles.

As a way to fight this gentrification, we are developing an architectural language derived from Black culture. So many cultures have their own architectural styles based on values, goals, morals, and customs shared by their society. When these cultures have relocated to America, to keep their culture and values intact, they bought land and built in the image of their homelands. That is not true for Black people in America. In fact, until 1968, Black people had no rights to own property in Los Angeles. While others began a race to acquire land in 1492, building homes and communities in their image, we started running 476 years after the race began. What percentage of land was left for Blacks to acquire? How then can we advance the development of a Black aesthetic in architecture?

This project, most importantly, is a collaboration with the community that will be for us and by us. My goal is to take control of our image in architecture; to elevate, not denigrate, Black life and culture. Ultimately, we envision repeating this process in nine historically Black cities in America to develop an architectural language that will vary based on the history and specificities of Black culture in each area.

KILLING IT: The Life and Death of Great American Cities by Amanda Golemba, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, M.Arch ’20

For decades, post-industrial cities throughout the United States have been quietly erased through self-imposed tabula rasa demolition. If considered at all, demolition is touted as the mechanism for removing unsightly blight, promoting safety, and discarding the obsolete and the unwanted. Once deemed unworthy, rarely does a building survive the threat of demolition. 

In the last decade, the City of Chicago has erased over 13,000 buildings with 225 in just the last four months. Not only does this mass erasure eradicate the material and the spatial, but it permanently wipes the remnants of human bodies, values, and history — a complete annulment of event, time, and memory. 

But why do we feel the need to erase in order to make progress?

Our current path has led to a built environment that is becoming more and more uniform and sterile. Much of America has become standardized, mixed-use developments; neighborhoods of cookie-cutter homes and the excessive use of synthetic, toxic building materials. A uniform world is a boring one that has little room for creativity, individuality, or authenticity.

This thesis, “KILLING IT,” is a design proposal for a traveling exhibition that seeks to change perceptions of the existing city fabric by visualizing patterns of erasure, questioning the resultant implications and effects of that erasure, and proposing an alternative fate. “KILLING IT” confronts the inherently violent aspects of architecture and explores that violence through the intentionally jarring, uncomfortable, and absurd analogy of murder. This analogy is a lens through which to trace the violent, intentional, and premature ending and sterilization of the existing built environment. After all, as Bernard Tschumi said, “To really appreciate architecture, you may even need to commit a murder.”1 But murder is not just about the events that take place within a building, it is also the material reality of the building itself. 

Over the life of a building, scarring, moments in time, and decay layer to create an inhabitable palimpsest of memory. This traveling exhibition is infused with the palimpsest concept by investigating strategies of layering, modularity, flexibility, transparency, and building remains, while layering them together to form a system that operates as an inhabitable core model collage. Each individual exhibition simultaneously memorializes the violence that happened at that particular site and implements murderous adaptive reuse strategies through collage and salvage material to expose what could have been.

If we continue down our current path, we will only continue to make the same mistakes and achieve the same monotonous, sterilizing results we currently see in every American city and suburb. We need to embrace a new path that values authenticity, celebrates the scars and traces of the past, and carries memories into the future. By reimaging what death can mean and addressing cycles of violence, “KILLING IT” proposes an optimistic vision for the future of American cities.

A New Prototype for Collective Housing by Juan Acosta and Gable Bostic, University of Texas at Austin, M.Arch ‘20

Austin is a city that faces extreme housing pressures. This problem is framed almost exclusively in terms of supply and demand, and the related question of affordability. For architects, however, a more productive question is: Will this new quantity produce a new quality of housing? 

How do we live in the city, how do we create individual and collective identity through architecture, and what are the urban consequences? This studio investigates new urban housing types, smaller than an apartment block yet larger and denser than a detached house. Critically assessing existing typologies, we ask the question: How can the comforts of the individual house be reconfigured to form new types of residential urban fabric beyond the entropy of tract housing or the formulaic denominator of “mixed-use.” The nature of the integrative design studio allowed for the testing of material systems and construction techniques that have long had an important economic and ecological impact.

“A New Prototype for Collective Housing” addresses collectivity in both a formal and social sense, existing between the commercial and residential scales present in Austin’s St. John neighborhood as it straddles the I-35 corridor; a normative American condition. A diversity of programs, and multigenerational living, create an inherently diverse community. Additionally, a courtyard typology is used to negotiate the spectrum of private and shared space. Volumes, comprising multiple housing units ranging from studio apartments to four bedrooms, penetrate a commercial plinth that circulates both residents and mechanical systems. The use of heavy timber ensures an equitable use of resources while imbuing the project with a familiar material character.

ELSEWHERE, OR ELSE WHERE? by Brenda (Bz) Zhang, University of California at Berkeley, M.Arch ’20

“ELSEWHERE, OR ELSE WHERE?” is an architectural fever dream about the San Francisco Bay Area. Beginning with the premise that two common ideas of Place—Home and Elsewhere—are no longer useful, the project wonders how disciplinary tools of architecture can be used to shape new stories about where we are.

For our purposes, “Home,” although primarily used to describe a place of domestic habitation, is also referring generally to a “familiar or usual setting,” as in home-base, home-court, home-page, and even home-button. As a counterpoint, Elsewhere shifts our attention “in or to another place,” away. This thesis is situated both in the literal spaces of Elsewhere and Home (landfills, houses, wilderness, base camps, wastelands, hometowns) and in their culturally constructed space (value-embedded narratives determining whether something belongs, and to whom). Since we construct both narratives through principles of exclusion, Elsewhere is a lot closer to Home than we say. These hybrid spaces—domestic and industrial, urban and hinterland, natural and built—are investigated as found conditions of the Anthropocene and potential sites for new understandings of Place.

Ultimately, this thesis attempts to challenge conventional notions of what architects could do with our existing skill sets, just by shifting our attention—Elsewhere. The sites shown here and the concerns they represent undeniably exist, but because of the ways Western architecture draws thick boundaries between and around them, they resist architectural focus—to our detriment.

In reworking the physical and cultural constructions of Homes and Elsewheres, architects are uniquely positioned to go beyond diagnostics in visualizing and designing how, where, and why we build. While this project looks specifically at two particular stories we tell about where we are, the overall objective is to provoke new approaches to how we construct Place—both physically and culturally—within or without our discipline.

The "Architecture Thesis of the Year | ATY 2020" is an international architecture thesis competition organized by theCharette. The aim of the competition is to extend appreciation to the tireless effort and exceptional creativity of student thesis in the fields of Architecture, Urban Design, Landscape and Restoration.

1st Prize Winner

ISTHME // L e CHAOS SENSIBLE by Dafni Filippa and Meriam Sehimi from Germany took home the top prize with their people oriented project. The students from the Technical University of Munich designed a scheme that the jury described as "poetic, based on real-life observations, lightweight and extraordinarily beautiful."

Jurors loved the simplicity and fluidity of the masterplan and how another culture is interpreted. They felt that drawings are adequate, sensitive and stunning.

2nd Prize Winner

Fabiola del Carmen Cruz Ballardo, from Peru, won second place for her project, AMAZONIA TRANS _ TRI _ FRONTERIZA. Three countries: Peru, Brazil, Bolivia; and two communities: Mancheron, Yamaha. All separated by artificial borders. Nevertheless, they share a common Amazonian culture. 

There is a will to unite people in this project, to respect different traditions, to propose different places, uniting past present and future with traditional languages, medical plants and culture. A "bridge" is created to consolidate this place and to respect it through the world: it can be seen like an SOS. Because this project is also implicitly about the amazon forest: calling to save its richness, be it natural or cultural.

3rd Prize Winner

Third place in the competition went to Philip Springall from United Kingdom. His project is a multidisciplinary exploration of Alzheimer’s disease, architecture and neuroscience. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that slowly strips away the notions of place, memory, identity and the self. 

The project investigates the role that architecture and the built environment can play in improving the lives of those with Alzheimer’s disease. The jury felt that the project "...contemplates a powerful concept which might have great applications in the real world."

The ATY Competition is an annual competition and will be released again in Summer of 2021.

Our scheme was not only influenced by the site’s context but also from the psychology of the topographic and urban fabric. While observing and analyzing the photos and videos of Accra, we were fascinated by how the movement of lightweight elements could be transformed into architecture.

Reflecting similar moments in our building, we created a light canopy, which reveals moments of the program. Sensing this transient nature, the concept’s priority is to capture and grow an architecture of empowerment while celebrating generosity of spirit. Our site exists through its natural borders and only so absorbs the dense and vibrant overflow of the context.

The strong relation between human behaviour and topography defines our project‘s identity.  The isthmus combined with the city’s density forms a sensible chaos, an ordered but also kinetic space. Following the importance of freedom and expression, we aimed to create an open structure which blows out the space.

The chosen program based on the notions of habitat, human dignity and identity orders a dynamic progression of space by generating a movement towards the sea. In order to weave these 3 narratives together, we positioned “activation points”. These notations are initiating our program‘s growth and dynamic, either pulling or releasing tension between the spaces.

Rather than just working with forms, we imagined them as being forces, and leading energies in our concept. Similarly to a butterfly effect, a movement of a space causes the activation of another.  The project challenges Accra’s creative expression, while focusing on gifting freedom through architecture.

The project is located in the tripartite between Peru, Brazil and Bolivia, where the ethnic communities, Manchineri and Yaminahua, reside. These communities have the same ethnic background but are separated by national artificial borders that weaken their traditions and relationships among them.

In response to this problem, the project takes a posture: to work beyond the borders and have the whole tripartite as an intervention area. So, regarding the social dynamics and ancestral indigenous practices that can be found in the area, the project proposes a cultural space where the communities would finally have a place. A place to learn and share their traditional knowledge.

For the indigenous people, the world is made by paths. Hierarchical paths that weave a world of relations and facts. As a master plan we seek to create an urban landscape tissue that would connect the countries, the ethnies and the Amazon as one. Roads and pathways are proposed accompanied with a Amazonian Park and landscape boulevards that enhance the connection with the environment. Finally, a continuous infrastructure frames the central landscape with a public and programmatic path, and catapults it as a space of integration.

This infrastructure is composed by modules that, taking into account the traditional construction methods of the Amazon, are elevated in pilotis and are built in Quinilla and Huayruro wood that ensure the resistance of the module. The module is thought to change according to the use of the spaces and be flexible to hold different activities like: holding ceremonies, learning traditional languages, learning about the Amazonian medicinal plants, etc.

In conclusion, this project seeks to vindicate the vital knowledge of the ancestral Amazonian cultures, not only for being cultural heritage, but because it is a lifestyle deeply connected with the environment that is intrinsic talking about them and the Amazon.

CARLISLE ALZHEIMER'S FOUNDATION - LIVING ALONGSIDE CREATIVE PRACTICE

My project is a multidisciplinary exploration of Alzheimer’s disease, architecture and neuroscience. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that slowly strips away the notions of place, memory, identity and the self. The project investigates the role that architecture and the built environment can play in improving the lives of those with Alzheimer’s disease.

My project began as a personal exploration into the lived experience of those with Alzheimer’s disease and how this is affected by architecture. My father has Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease and we develop an ongoing collaboration throughout the year. Drawing, making and building, we developed rich modes of communication that could offer insight into how my father experiences the world. This culminated in the 1:1 construction of a timber pergola, located on a lake from my father’s youth. 

Carlisle Alzheimer’s foundation proposes a network inspired by our collaboration, which connects individuals in creative practice with individuals at various stages of Alzheimer’s disease. By developing creative partnerships, the pair can engage in meaningful activities to respond to the challenges of personal identity, occupation, responsibility and inclusion faced by those with Alzheimer’s.

Situated at the Citadel in the centre of Carlisle, the foundation operates as the nucleus of Alzheimer’s care and research throughout the border regions. The foundation is designed through creative activities of making, constructing, performing, eating, cooking, wandering, conversing and socialising. The foundation engages with the local community by providing shared use of its facilities. Through the social environment created at the foundation, individuals with Alzheimer’s are treated as fully integrated members of society. At it’s core is a dedicated research centre which manages the foundation’s network and conducts research through the creative partnerships. Through the foundation, Carlisle will aim to become the most dementia friendly city in Europe, with interventions at various scales across the city.

Climate change and other existential threats have exposed the fragility of the European Union’s strength in unity. Children have called for adults to stop ruining the planet, and underscored the need for the Paris Agreement to ensure equitable outcomes from climate negotiations. Might children be the more imaginative champion of their own future to re-calibrate the core aims and values of the EU? Could spatial engagements with nature enable them to be self-directive, and authors of their own learning? Without the prejudices and cynicism of adults, we should take a leap of faith into the untainted fictional speculations to secure resilience and democracy.

The thesis positions children in the driving seat of the EU to address the current global water crisis (1), in which they relocate the EU headquarters into a new territory: Crete, the birthplace of Europe (2). The new young leaders reconfigure the EU’s manifesto and create the enterprise of ‘EU-topia’ to protect the Mediterranean body of water, and encourage an alternative participatory democracy (4). The architecture examines the thresholds between ideology and pragmatism when dealing with nature, landscape and weather.

At ‘EU-topia’, children chaperone the former adult leaders in a year-long apprenticeship in humanity, well being and water management in which they gain the skills, knowledge and values to become micro-leaders (5). As authors of their environment, children cultivate symbiosis between nature and built forms to bring freshwater to the world, ensuring water equality and accessibility for all (6). The technical resolutions utilise upcycled loose parts as an encyclopedia of the children’s ideas and to reduce the impact of construction (7). Collectively, the children and adults are responsible for constructing and running the sustainable enterprise to promote rich idea exchange, give a voice to the world’s children, restore European democracy, and nurture the world’s most precious resource (8).

ORB{I}S - THE FUTURE OF CULTURE

Orb[i]s is a Design – Research Project aimed at addressing the constant change in urban environments with need for urban infrastructure that adapts to this constant change. Therefore, proposing a Prototypical System that is highly adaptive in nature, creating spatial infrastructure in the urban environment that will respond to the changing needs, numbers and development within the city, augmenting daily experiences and activities.

Orb[i]s is a behavioural assembly that opens up the possibilities of a dynamic environment that is not limited to a building plan, rather is autonomous, adaptable, dynamic and self-assembling based on real-time data culminating in a constantly reconfiguring ecology.

A sensory system encourages decision making in the system, making it self-aware. The self-assembling quality of the system arises from unit to unit communication, leading to higher order of organisations and structures. The smallest scale of the system, being the unit itself, has the ability to be mobile, sense, and make decisions. Upon coming together with other units, the system demonstrates collective intelligence and plethora of changing behaviours, providing a higher level of flexibility and adaptability.

The highly adaptive nature of the system springs from the ability of a single unit’s mobility with the addition of a multitude of such units; as well as transformability at the unit level, with is ability to telescopically extend and connect to other units. These connecting arms bring about considerable transformation within an existing structure, without the need for more units.

In addition to its adaptive, space-making ability, the system provides a layer of interaction with its users. Culminating from research of light and its various effects, illumination has been incorporated in the system to provide an added layer of experience. The ambience created by the play of light and shadow, though not physically yet brings about transformation in the space generated.

In all, our ecology is envisioned to provide spatial and experiential infrastructure, augmenting and aiding urban change.

FRAGMENTED IMAGINERY - SEEKING RESILIENCE FOR THE ROHINGYA

The label ‘refugee’ invokes a patchwork of hopeless and sombre images: the washed ashore body of a 2-year old Syrian boy, a packed boat drifting in the Mediterranean Sea, cities reduced to ruins in Yemen, and run-down camps in the Horn of Africa. The objective of this thesis is to create shelters at the 24 South Pargana district, West Bengal for one such refugee community— the Rohingya – dispersed within India. The Rohingya population is a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority from the North-Western Rakhine state of Myanmar. Consistently attacked and systematically discriminated, they are often referred to as ‘one of the most persecuted minorities in the world.’

When refugees become homeless, they are also deprived of a sense of belonging and detached from their familiar culture and ways of living. Therefore, when this project encounters the mission of making shelters, it also meets the challenges of recreating intricate imageries of identity and memory encapsulated within ‘home’. Therefore, this project proposes shared institutions, accessible to both the  Rohingya settlers and the members of the receiving community, alongside which resilient houses will grow incrementally. With the assistance of such spaces, including a community center, refugees are accommodated into the local people’s everyday through visibility and interaction, which in turn promotes their sense of legitimacy and informal inclusion. Project includes a vocational centre to enable the Rohingya to make positive contributions to the economy.

Ultimately, renouncing both makeshift shelters and prefabricated structures, the design process for this community attempts to capture flexibility and endurance that will be responsive to a civilisation in flux. The dominant focus here is to see how we can better integrate refugees and build their capacities so that they can become useful to our society instead of merely remaining as a marginalized group used as a tool for xenophobic rhetoric

MANDRA BRICKWORKS - DEFINING THE HEARTH OF A BRICKFIELD

The hearth has been the center for many things. From forging the first kiln around which man learned the masonry craft to marking the social focus of the traditional house, the hearth is the nexus that unites man and material. This thesis explores the hearth as the socio-artisanal fulcrum in the context of the brickfields of Mandra, a landscape dominated with furnaces dedicated to the craft of traditional brickmaking.

Using the hearth as the central element that ties all the brick-making processes, the project speculates on an architectural design that intangibly originates from the hearth while tangibly dependent on its utility. It takes the conventional design of the hearth and explodes it in the guise of sinuous masonry walls radiating from the core to create spaces for the proposed center of material research and innovation.

Nestled in the brickfields of Pakistan, Mandra Brickworks is the hearth exploded. It is the experience of walking along the ringed walls radiating from a central furnace, welcoming users from a radially sinking landscape into the controlled environment of a brickworks plant. What starts as a highly curated journey through an entry court turns into an intimate experience with the raw elements associated with the hearth.

We are led through water courts which funnel water into the building over drying-rooms where stacks of unfired bricks are stacked to incredulous heights, through steam courts which puff the heat from slumbering firing chamber below and then around a working furnace that embodies the primitive energy hearth around which the first societies developed. It blends the industrial with the social, functional with the theatrical; ultimately questioning the sterility of the prevalent industrial typology.

VOID PEDAGOGY

Void Pedagogy: Children’s City explores the intersection of two contemporary research fields in Japan: urban void and progressive education. For decades, progressive pedagogy has existed almost exclusively in rural Japan, educators claim the levels of spatial freedom necessary for their curricula cannot be achieved in the city. Simultaneously, an underexplored urban phenomenon exists within Tokyo: void space.

Void refers to the gaps in the urban fabric resulting from Japan’s rapid cycle of demolition and reconstruction, these voids are often left vacant for years or adapted for coin-parking lots. In recent years, a number of Tokyo residents have adapted void space for informal public events across the city; the interventions demonstrate the range of programmatic opportunity in void space, restaurants, markets and theatres have all been facilitated.

The thesis statement of Void Pedagogy is that void space in Tokyo may be formally adapted for progressive  educational means. The conclusion of six months of design research fieldwork proposes a progressive  school, dispersed across the void space of Hiroo, Shibuya. The proposal explores the opportunities for a  dispersed school to programmatically facilitate progressive education that has been historically excluded  from the city. Project-based learning becomes achievable through vacant lots which may act as catalysts  for student-led creation. 

The spatial diversity of void allows the school’s architecture to employ varying  levels of scale and permanence, operating in responsive cohesion with the city. A Void Pedagogy school,  through urban dispersal and demountable construction, may represent an architectural typology which  shares its values with the progressive education it facilitates. Through such an alternative approach to  school design, progressive education may be finally invited into the city.

However, this project, by using urban void space, gives a place to progressive education within the city. Indeed, cities often result in empty spaces, areas that are not built yet, this project seizes that as an opportunity to build ephemeral constructions. Coming and going with the new needs and new spaces available. This brings up interesting questions such as: how can we link architecture, education, cities, and youth? How can architecture and the built environment sensitize people to new ways of thinking? How can an educational project be made around these themes? ”

RE-IMAGINE CHINESE TIMBER FRAME FOREST CITY: CHINESE CULTURAL COMPLEX

An investigation of traditional Chinese timber frame and its application towards modern large-scale infrastructure.

This thesis aims to investigate the structural and constructional characteristics of the traditional Chinese timber frame, and to  explore their potential implications in modern large-scale infrastructure  through digital modelling and prototyping.

Panel 01: An in-depth research was conducted on the traditional Chinese timber frame by focusing on one element, Dougong (brackets & blocks). Three principles are concluded (Fig. 1.1): 1. Dougong performs efficiently  as a structural system, providing earthquake proof function; 2. all compo nents in Dougong and Chinese timber frame are highly standardized and  can be calculated from one base unit; and 3. Chinese timber frame can  be parametric. Those principles are input into Grasshopper to generate  tectonic fragments (Fig 1.2). Further manipulations are implemented to  develop a spatial system (Fig 1.3-1.4).

Panel 02: Dougong’s structural principles are translated into a building scale using Karamba (Fig. 2.1 – 2.2). A new joinery system is developed to handle the different loads experienced in this large-scale cantilever system (Fig. 2.3). All components are designed to be standardized and fabricated using cross laminated timber (Fig 2.4-2.5). The second part of this thesis proposes a building project, sited in the border of Malaysia and Singapore (Fig. 2.6), serving as a cultural hub to celebrate Chinese heritage.

Panel 03: This project brings the traditional Chinese architectural language into a foreign tropical environment. Environmental strategies including pushed-out windows, rainwater collecting ponds, and elevated ground levels are implemented to adapt the original Chinese architecture form into a new system that deals with the local climate efficiently. With China’s ambition to amplify their global influence, it is inevitable that more Chinese funded infrastructure in foreign land will appear. As a result, this project presents a new colonial architecture typology that is elegant, efficient, and can be appreciated.

BUILD WITH SALT

The unique landscape of Saline di Tarquinia offers an opportunity to reconsider the normal practices of restoration, preservation, and conservation by revitalisation which extracts the essence of a place  and tells its story through meaningful architectur al interventions derived from the landscape and its  history.

The design addresses the lost value in the case of Saline di Tarquinia and looks to give it new cultural importance.  When the salt extraction industry halted produc tion there was no reason for villagers to stay. Build ings became empty and the place quickly forgotten. Nature had once again claimed the landscape  and thus the site slowly turned into a ruin. Saline di  Tarquinia became one of the many vacancies that  exist throughout Italy – without a clear strategy for  their reuse.

The Salt Monument is a radical response which un veils an unexpected, and the previously unexplored  potential of the place through dealing within an other dimension of heritage perception. ‘Built with  salt’ stands as a poetic expression of the site’s rich  history, using material and a story that is derived  from the landscape. The intervention reintroduces  the culture of salt and gives it a new relevance in the  modern age. The building portrays the history, ex plains changes, and underlines the most crucial ele ments of the site, but rather than becoming simply  another ‘salt museum’ the intervention becomes  the base for a new salt experimentation laboratory  where the first example of the materials possibilities  are displayed in the monument itself.

Design focus on transforming old salt factory into monument made of salt. By using the existing structure as a mold, filled with salt the processes  of building falling apart would accelerated. The re maining salty form would give a research lab space  for further experiments with this material in the  left wing. Tower would turn into the viewpoint for  all the visitors and the right wing will connect the  building with a sea as a bike path cutting through  ponds showing wide variety of ecosystems which  overtook this place.

THE UNCANNY HOUSE

Τhe present thesis deals with a new way of living. Its purpose is to challenge the current way of living as well as to study whether such a new approach can offer opportunities for reflection and internal search. The aim of this research is to discover new aspects of each user’s self. At the same time, the pursuit of limits between design, function and form is sought since in the present thesis  the limits between these three pylon are fluid. The basic design tool of this proposal is the unfamil iar which distracts the user from his habits (i.e. living conditions) until then.

The whole synthetic process constituted a dialectic between the familiar space (the family home) and the unfamiliar feeling as a basic design intention in conjunction with the processing of the room as a typological unit. The whole is treated as a sum up of many rooms where it is developed in a standard grid of dimensions 5×5. All the uses are placed in it and they occupy a room each.

In the whole of the house there are no hierarchies of spaces but there are hierarchies of the whole  during the habitation. First of all, the characteristics of the rooms were determined in total accord ing to their position and secondly their use was determined. The absence of a space to move, (the  corridor) aims to give the user a whole different residential experience as a whole but also separate  space snapshots each time which will concern the human being of the purpose of being inhabited.  In conclusion, this thesis as a typological proposition for habitation, reconstituted the relationship between space and a human being thus giving a design answer for the living and being inhabited.

Protecting the irreplaceable by creating a Bio-sanctuary to cultivate and sustain South Africa’s endangered pollinator species.

Human agency has led to the erosion of the very foundations of our livelihoods. Ecosystems, which form our life support systems and our safety nets are shrinking and collapsing. At the heart of this collapse are pollinators (butterflies and bees), key species responsible for maintaining these vital ecosystems whose very existence is being threatened by human activity. 

This thesis explores how architecture, in its physicality, can not only assist ecosystems and pollinators in their fight for survival but also act as a catalyst for a process of awakening and awareness. This thesis explores how architecture can work in tandem with nature above and beyond sustainable design, in a way that allows the built form to cultivate and strengthen South Africa’s ecosystems, by creating an artificial bio-sanctuary to cultivate and sustain South Africa’s endangered pollinator species.

The proposed critical environment takes the form of an undulating timber veil that acts as both roof and wall. The structure oscillates as it embodies the figure eight geometry of a bee’s pollen dance and the infinity movement of a butterflies beating wing, rising (to allow for larger volumes) and falling (to ensure more intimate environments), depending on the spatial function below. Four roof mounted follies transform the veil into the artificial environment, they are roof mounted planter trays, basking panels with overwintering chambers below, beehive chambers, water catchment and artificial nectar panels.

On the underside, the programme unfolds as a gallery exhibiting research done on the site; a bee diagnostic clinic where bees are used as diagnostic tools to determine if a person has cancer through smell; an educational node; a café, a work space and ends with a plant, butterfly and bee laboratory, with an adjacent ‘greenhouse’/ researching testing space. Thus, the veil becomes a double skin serving pollinators on one side and enclosing spaces on the other side to serve people, negotiating between the two words of pollinators and humans at the intersection of the built form and the natural environment.

CIKAPUNDUNG CRAFT COMMUNITY

Symbiotic of local craft techniques and construction knowledge for kampung regeneration by retrofitting an existing concrete structure in the centre of Bandung.

Unsafe informal structures are a global and imminent problem. With the population increasing at an intense rate, the pressure on existing infrastructures is augmenting every  day. The informal urban settlements of Indonesian cities (kampungs) provide a pre cious socio-spatial safety net for workers and are suffering the most from this influx of  people. Kampung Braga, located in the city centre of Bandung, is being overtaken by  monumental developments which are detrimental to the local character, environment and social structures. The kampung’s constructions, because of financial constraints and poor conditions, are often hastily built and badly maintained. Additionally, because of a lack of construction knowledge; limited resources and precious funds are invested in buildings which cannot cope with the needs of the growing population. 

Through combining traditional vernacular knowledge in a low-tech approach with the  introduction of CNC milling, local workers are empowered to create safe and dura ble buildings which reflect the regional character. The Cikapundung Craft Community,  which grows out of the existing structure of a semi-abandoned market (Pasar Cika pundung), is a creative educational environment where the new construction approach  is taught, tested and applied; incrementally improving the conditions of the urban kampung in a sustainable and expressive manner. 

By promoting the use of local and natural materials, the project can provide alternatives  to concrete that have a beneficial impact on indoor quality, thus improving the health of  its inhabitants. The resulting building, self-built by the community, not only has a lasting  impact on the livelihoods of the kampung residents but also on the area by embodying  the commemorative value of the market structure being retrofitted and giving back  power and identity to its users.

We seek to encourage young talent in bringing their path-breaking ideas to the forefront globally.

PREMISE Academic Design endeavours allow the free flow of unfettered ideas – experimental, bold, promising, and unconventional. An intensive architectural discourse and a collaborative design process are essential to developing ingenious solutions to complex problems of the future.

20 Thesis topics related to Residential Design

A residence is one of the first projects any architecture student is asked to design as part of the curriculum , as a residence is one of the first examples of architecture we all see and so many of us are fortunate to live in. Residential projects may seem very easy to comprehend and design, but the various types of residences that are in use today and the different user groups they are targeted towards make it a vast topic, something that requires huge amounts of research to design. 

Choosing a residential project as a thesis topic in the final year of B.Arch. would be like coming full circle – applying all the knowledge you have gained in the last five years on the very first project typology you were taught to design.

So, here are 20 thesis topics related to residential typology that any architecture student can take up.

1. Mixed-Use Buildings | Residential Design

With the global pandemic forcing people to stay confined in their houses, the development of mixed-use buildings with residential, commercial and office spaces all in one place will help with similar circumstances in the future. A student would need to do extensive research on how to properly combine all different places and the purposes they serve to create a building that fulfils functionality and is also aesthetically pleasing. 

Mixed-use buildings as a thesis topic will help a student when they start working because of its huge potential as a future trend in architecture.

2. Vertical Housing

With the increasing population and declining availability of open land, vertical housing is one of the best solutions available to tackle the requirements of the current and future generations. Vertical housing is residential buildings where architects arrange spaces vertically instead of horizontally, to create more units in a smaller footprint. 

These buildings also contain community areas and green spaces interspersed with the residential units to encourage people to be more social and not stay confined in their high-rise apartments .  

Using this as a thesis topic will be extremely beneficial as there are high chances of designing similar projects when students start professionally practising after getting their degrees.

3. Community living | Residential Design

One of the first markers of human beings settling down and becoming civilized is when they started living in communities with individual houses and common spaces for gathering. Since then, human beings have always preferred to live in a society. 

Be it apartment complexes with high-rise buildings , or housing estates with horizontal, community living in urban areas are a topic that can be taken up as a thesis project related to residential use. Community living will help one understand how to design spaces that can be used by different people to live together in harmony.

4. Row Houses

Row houses are defined as a series of houses connected through common sidewalls. They are a great way to build individual houses in smaller areas and with lesser materials, making them cheaper. 

Row houses might already be in use in the  USA and European countries , but they have huge potential in third-world countries and in places like India where there is a space crunch issue, making them a good thesis topic under the residential typology.

5. Tiny Houses | Residential Design

These are houses that have a total area of less than 400 ft 2 or 37 m 2 and are a good alternative to traditional houses when the available open land is smaller than average. Tiny houses have a wide variety of design considerations and this leads to innovative spaces that are multifunctional and furniture that is multi-purpose. 

Compacting a whole house in an area that is less than 400 ft 2 is a challenge that will help thesis students in designing residential areas in the future, as the availability of free land is reducing every day.

6. Shipping Container Homes

20 ft or 40 ft steel containers that have been used to carry different types of goods in ships can be used as a readymade or prefabricated skeleton to build a house. These homes are a good way to re-purpose shipping containers that have been abandoned or thrown away and are easier and faster to build as the exterior structure is already available. 

The containers can be stacked vertically or horizontally to create everything from tiny houses to mansions. Shipping container homes are an intriguing and unique residential thesis topic for students.

Yurts are portable houses consisting of a latticework of wood or bamboo covered by a round tent and have been the traditional houses for many tribes in central Asia, especially in Mongolia. Yurts are a unique aspect of vernacular architecture that can be adapted in different climates around the world with the use of more modern materials like steel for the latticework and insulating fabrics for the tent. 

Yurts as a residential thesis topic will give students a different look in a sustainable and vernacular approach to designing. 

8. Earthships | Residential Design

Pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds, Earthships are a type of passive solar earth shelter that is built with both natural and up-cycled materials. These residential units are structures built on the principle that the six human needs of energy, garbage management, sewage treatment, shelter, clean water and food can be met through environmentally sustainable building design. 

Earthships are intended to be simple, “off-the-grid” homes with minimal dependence on fossil fuels and public utilities and can be constructed by people with little building knowledge. The scope of Earthships as self-sustainable and ecological single-family residences is huge and something that can be taken up by architecture students for their final year thesis.

9. Cob Houses

These are houses built of clay, sand and straw that are recyclable and non-polluting when demolished. Cob houses are inexpensive, energy-efficient houses suitable for hot climates that are also extremely durable and earthquake-resistant. 

Even though these types of houses have traditionally been user-built, an architect’s perspective will help in enhancing its ecological and sustainable features and lead to better planning and usability of spaces. Cob houses should be explored as a thesis topic in the residential typology.

10. Cave houses | Residential Design

Caves served as the very first human dwellings – they served as a shelter against natural calamities and wild animals. In recent years, cave dwellings have made a comeback, in the form of carving contemporary houses inside existing caves. These houses contain contemporary elements like doors and windows, modern electrical and bathroom fittings and also connections to public utilities and “off-the-grid” options for the same. 

Designing cave houses is a challenge because one has to carve out different rooms in accordance with the inside of the cave and major changes cannot be done to the structure of the cave. Cave houses provide the option to utilize existing natural shelter formations instead of disrupting green areas, and hence are a good residential topic for the thesis as they are becoming more popular.
