Six Presentation Tips for Finance Professionals

  • Soft Skills

Presenting is an essential responsibility for many finance professionals.

To gauge just how essential, we asked CFA Institute Financial NewsBrief readers how often they have to give presentations. More than half of the 585 respondents (58%) to our unscientific poll said they present at least once a month. Meanwhile, only 19% responded that they “rarely” or “never” do.

Presumably, there is a bit of natural selection at play here: Those who are more comfortable with or gifted at presenting end up in the roles that require it most often. And, of course, the more experience they accrue, the more they improve and the more comfortable they grow. Nevertheless, most people always have room to hone their presentation skills.

As a finance professional, on average, how frequently are you required to give presentations?

effective presentation skills for finance professionals

Recently, Dave Underhill of Underhill Training and Development delivered a webinar on how to be clear and concise in data-heavy presentations . He offered many useful tips for improving your presenting skills. Here are a few:

Presentation Design Tips

  • Have a clear and singular core message tied to a specific call to action. Even when you are dealing with complex information, the key takeaway and call to action should be simplified and made crystal clear for your audience.
  • Targeting the information to your audience means considering each member’s role and how well they understand your material as well as their communication style and how they feel about the purpose of your presentation. If you know some of the key decision makers in your audience well, consider what motivates them. Do they care most about getting straight to results, ensuring the best for staff members affected by the decisions, avoiding unnecessary risks, or basing plans on flawless data? Address these motivations. If you don’t know your audience well, try to address all of the motivations.

Presentation Delivery Tips

  • Attention spans are short and you may notice audience members’ interest drifting away. To bring them back, try pausing, moving, or mentioning an individual by name. The silence of the pause can recapture people’s attention. Similarly, a move to a new position can change the setting enough so that people refocus. Using someone’s name is a foolproof technique, but does require some tact because you do not want to embarrass anyone.
  • Orient your audience to your data slides verbally or through animation, even if you believe they will grasp the meaning on their own. Explain what the axes of a graph represent, for example, and feature the specific data points you want the audience to absorb.

Underhill had two additional pieces of advice that address both design and delivery:

  • For every “what” you present, you need to answer the “so what?” Don’t assume there’s one logical conclusion to be drawn from your evidence. Communicate what you want the audience to take away. Underhill used the example of a company pitch presentation in which the audience is told that the pitching team has a combined xx years of experience. That’s nice, but so what? Why should the audience care about that? You need to tell them why.
  • Remember that the goal of many presentations is to have a conversation, not to give a lecture. Approaching presentations with this mindset can give you more confidence and help ensure the audience’s needs are better met.

What It Takes to Give a Great Presentation

  • Carmine Gallo

effective presentation skills for finance professionals

Five tips to set yourself apart.

Never underestimate the power of great communication. It can help you land the job of your dreams, attract investors to back your idea, or elevate your stature within your organization. But while there are plenty of good speakers in the world, you can set yourself apart out by being the person who can deliver something great over and over. Here are a few tips for business professionals who want to move from being good speakers to great ones: be concise (the fewer words, the better); never use bullet points (photos and images paired together are more memorable); don’t underestimate the power of your voice (raise and lower it for emphasis); give your audience something extra (unexpected moments will grab their attention); rehearse (the best speakers are the best because they practice — a lot).

I was sitting across the table from a Silicon Valley CEO who had pioneered a technology that touches many of our lives — the flash memory that stores data on smartphones, digital cameras, and computers. He was a frequent guest on CNBC and had been delivering business presentations for at least 20 years before we met. And yet, the CEO wanted to sharpen his public speaking skills.

How to Make A Compelling Financial Presentation

May 17, 2024

Writing financial presentations is not easy. Typically, You have a lot of information to convey and you have a short time. And your audience is not always interested.

Why should anyone listen to you when you are presenting financial information? And how do you look confident and compelling?

It’s the question we answer in our financial presentation coaching programme s .

Of course, the main reason for wanting better financial presentation skills is to impress those you are speaking to and get them to make the right decision. And this is very important if you are presenting to the board . But the big question is, what do you do to achieve this?

Financial presentations should never be dull . Good financial presentations are all about how well you tell your story. Don’t tell me what the numbers are – tell me what they mean. Tell it properly and you connect with your audience – whether it is the board, or your investors or financial commentators.

There are tried and tested techniques you can use to tell powerful financial stories. Our experts help businesses, CFOs and financial professionals with their financial presentations, investor days and fundraising presentations.

We have been coaching financial professionals to create successful financial presentations for nearly 15 years. Over the years we have discovered a series of common themes that underpin the most successful financial presentations. Here are a few gems we’ve learned over the years.

How to Write a Compelling Financial Presentations – 9 Top Tips

Let’s review each of these points in detail:

1. Be Clear What You Want to Achieve

Before creating fancy slides and analysing data, take a step back. Ask yourself: what is the single most important takeaway you want your audience to have after your presentation? Are you informing them about a new investment strategy? Persuading them to adopt a specific financial product? Reporting on monthly numbers? A clear objective keeps your message focused and avoids information overload. Remember, a good presentation isn’t just about the information you deliver, it’s about the action you want your audience to take.

Unless you are clear how you want to be seen by others, it’s a real challenge to get the results you want. But, the simple question: “ What impression do you want to make? ” is hard to answer.

To be good at presenting financial information in business you should be clear how you want others to see you, and your goals. Once we help you clarify how you want to be seen, we can then polish what you say and how you say it.

For example, if you are creating a monthly report, do you just want to give the numbers, or do you want to reassure management that everything is on track?  Do you want to focus their attention on something that is going wrong?  Do you want extra resources to run your department better?  Each of these are clear objectives.  Reporting monthly numbers is NOT a clear objective.

2. Build Your Financial Presentation Around Strong Messages

With your goal in mind, craft a handful of strong messages that support it. These messages should be clear, concise, and resonate with your audience. Think about the current economic climate, investor concerns, and industry trends. Use powerful language that connects with your audience’s needs and motivates them to listen.

Here’s an example: Instead of a generic statement like “Monthly Report,” try a more impactful message: “Exceeded Budget in June.”  Then, below that you can build your financial presentation around a few strong sub-messages. “Our new products were well received”. “sales teams beat targets” “Forward pipeline not looking so strong”

3. Design Your Financial Presentation for Your Audience

Understanding your audience is crucial. Are you presenting to the board, to a sceptical sales team or to seasoned investors?  What do they know?  What do they want from your presentation?  What mood are they in?  How can you make their lives easier?  Tailor your language, examples, and data complexity accordingly.

Consider your audience’s expectations as well. Are they expecting a formal presentation or a more interactive session? Knowing your audience allows you to design a presentation that engages them and delivers the information in a way they can readily absorb .

For all audiences, give clear explanations, relatable analogies, and avoid overwhelming detail.  And remember, tell them what the numbers mean to them.

4. Don’t Confuse a PowerPoint to-Read Document with Visual Aids

People rarely want to be taken through a presentation. The best presenters do not use PowerPoint in a boring way. While PowerPoint may not be going away, you can use it differently. For example, did you know that PowerPoint is a terrible planning tool? There are many more effective ways of structuring and story-boarding your next financial presentation.

So, with your presentation, you can avoid “turning the pages” in a meeting. You can learn how better to plan, make more impact and, most importantly, make a real positive impression with your audiences. This means clear confident financial presentations.

PowerPoint is a fantastic tool, but it shouldn’t replace your ability to communicate effectively. Obviously, avoid cramming slides with text-heavy paragraphs. Your audience shouldn’t be reading the screen – they should be listening to you. Instead, use visuals strategically. Think of them as complements to your spoken message, not replacements. Charts, graphs, and images should be clear, concise, and directly support your key points.  Only use a visual aid if you can’t describe it better in words.

Here are some tips:

  • Visualise your data: Use charts and graphs to present complex data in a way that’s easy to understand.
  • Keep it simple: Avoid cluttering visuals with unnecessary details.
  • High-quality visuals: Use professional-looking images and icons that are relevant to your topic.

Remember, visuals should enhance your presentation, not distract from it.

5. Keep it Simple, Even if the Data is Complex

The financial world is full of intricate details and complex data. However, your presentation shouldn’t be.

You want to present the key takeaways from your data analysis. Don’t overwhelm your audience with technical jargon or overly detailed charts.

Here are some strategies:

  • Talk about trends, not every data point: Highlight the overall story the data tells, not every minute fluctuation.
  • Explain complex terms: If you must use technical terms, take a moment to explain them in simple language.
  • Use storytelling: Weave a narrative around your data to make it more engaging and memorable.

By simplifying your message, you ensure your audience understands the implications of your data and can make informed decisions.

6. Create Graphs that are Easy to Read

Graphs and charts are powerful tools for conveying financial information. But poorly designed visuals can be confusing and counterproductive. Here’s how to create graphs that are easy to read and understand:

  • Use Strong titles: Your chart title should explain what the data shows.  Not ‘Revenue’ but ‘Revenue has grown 26% in the last 2 months’
  • Have Clear Labels: Ensure your graphs have clear and concise labels for axes, data points
  • Avoid legends: Instead put data labels next to the data series (see below)
  • Keep it simple: Avoid excessive chart junk like 3D effects or distracting gridlines.

By following these tips, you create graphs that are visually appealing and effectively communicate your financial message.

For example see these two examples:

Bad graph from financial presentation 1

Things to note here for better graphs in financial presentations:

  • Choose a chart format that helps interpret the data
  • Tell the story in the headline
  • Keep text horizontal
  • Get rid of legends – they make the reader work hard
  • Eliminate unnecessary text
  • Fainter Y-axis grid lines look good
  • Keep series labels next to the line

7. Make the Right First Impression

You only get one chance to make a first impression, and presentations are no different. Here’s how to grab your audience’s attention from the start:

  • Confident Introduction: Start with a strong introduction that introduces your topic, yourself and the key takeaways.
  • Opening Hook: Use an attention-grabbing anecdote, statistic, or question to pique their interest.
  • Professional Appearance: Dress professionally and project confidence through your body language and tone of voice.

For example, what happens in your first 30 seconds when you present financial information?

  • Do you have good eye contact?
  • Do you show interest in them?
  • Do you ask the right questions?

Can you be sure that you have made the right impression?

A strong opening sets the stage for a successful presentation and ensures your audience is engaged from the very beginning.

8. End Your Financial Presentation with Impact

Don’t fizzle out at the end. Conclude your presentation with a clear and impactful summary. Briefly reiterate your key messages and the call to action you want your audience to take.

Here are some tips for a strong ending:

  • Summarize Key Points: Recap the most important takeaways from your presentation.
  • Call to Action: Clearly state what you want your audience to do next, whether it’s contacting you for further information or making an investment decision.
  • Never finish with a Q&A Session: Instead, make sure the last words are your words.

A strong ending leaves a lasting impression and ensures your audience remembers the value you provided.

9. Practice to Build Your Skills

Even the most meticulously crafted presentation can fall flat without proper practice. Investing time to rehearse your delivery will build your confidence and ensure a smooth, polished performance.

Here are some tips for effective practice:

  • Practice Out Loud: Rehearse your presentation out loud, paying attention to pacing, clarity, and body language.
  • Time Yourself: Ensure your presentation stays within the allotted timeframe.
  • Practice with Others: Ask a colleague or friend to listen to your presentation and provide feedback.
  • Keep fixing and changing.   Don’t rehearse like an actor, who has a perfect script.  Instead, rehearse like a tennis player, so you keep improving and are ready for whatever is thrown at you.

By practising properly (perhaps with a professional coach), you can overcome nerves, deliver your message effectively, and command the attention of your audience.

Learn to make financial presentations with passion and power

Two Day Course

  • Acquire a toolkit of methods for getting the audiences attention
  • Learn how to be self confident and charismatic when presenting
  • Design high impact presentations (including strategies for building effective visual aids)

In the world of banking, finance and insurance the ability to ‘pitch’ an idea and present a proposal elegantly is a required competency for promotion to senior positions and this workshop aims to give participants the ability to be delivering powerful messages with a real sense of authority. It is also about having a real sense of confidence in yourself as a presenter and in the content of your message. The course is structured to meet the particular needs of people in the finance sector who have to present to colleagues; or speak at conferences, or pitch ideas to investors.

Learning objectives

By attending this highly interactive two-day course you will:

  • Gain an insight into the ‘golden rules’ and guiding principles of dynamic presentations
  • Master powerful techniques for developing your self-confidence when standing in front of an audience
  • Discover a simple, yet elegant, nine-step planning process that will enable you to have a systematic approach for creating excellent presentations
  • Learn how to open and close a talk so that you make a good impression
  • Develop a strong, flexible speaking voice that exudes confidence and energy

Who should attend?

This is a training programme for relationship managers, account executives, corporate bankers, asset managers, senior insurance industry executives and other banking and insurance sector employees who have to make presentations to key decision makers (both internal and external) as part of their job.

Pre-course preparation

The emphasis of the course is on delivering material in front of an audience. In order to maximise the time available to do this, participants need to prepare a draft presentation with visual aids in advance of the course. The presentation, lasting around five minutes, will be delivered on day one. To help guide them in their preparation, participants will be sent a Boulden planning guide in advance of the course to help structure their talk. Participants should also allow time on the evening of day one of the course to write a second talk, of around ten minutes duration. This presentation will be used on day two.

The inner game of presenting

The phrase the ‘inner game’ is a term borrowed from sports psychology. It is a reference to the fact that what is going on inside a person’s head (their state of mind) is crucial to good performance. Here we consider the role perception and beliefs of expert presenters. We review the mindset that is associated with elegant and charismatic presentations.

  • Examining your current beliefs
  • Reviewing expert beliefs
  • Making changes that you feel are appropriate for you

Pairs exercise: brainstorming the golden rules of effective financial presentations

Masterful planning method.

Outstanding presenters plan and rehearse their talks thoroughly but quickly. The BMC masterful planning process™ is a mnemonic in which each letter in the word ‘masterful’ covers one of the nine aspects of effective preparation. Learning the method allows the design of the presentation to be fast and effective.

Day 1 (cont)

Delivering with impact

There will be a review of the BMC Financial Presentations Assessment checklist, which highlights the key points that the speakers need to implement when giving their talks.

  • Introduction and ending
  • Pausing, pace and pitch
  • Logical flow – the importance of the signpost slide
  • The power of metaphors
  • Sensory based language
  • Body language and gestures
  • Positional anchors
  • Visual aids and lines of sight

Group exercise: discussion of key points

Revising the 5 minute presentation.

Participants update and rehearse their five-minute presentations.

Delivering the 5 minute presentations

Speakers take turns to deliver their five-minute presentations in front of the group and are given feedback by reviewing the videotape of their presentation and as a result of getting feedback against the Boulden assessment checklist.

Voice development exercises

Excellent presenters speak naturally and with pride. Here we consider the postural, breathing, and voice projection aspects of speaking well to groups. The exercises are of the types that are taught to actors and singers.

  • Correct posture & relaxation
  • Diaphragmatic breathing

Pairs exercise: breathing exercises

Day 2 (cont)

Building presenter confidence

Confidence in presenting has four sources. Firstly it stems from having expert beliefs, secondly from knowing your material, thirdly positive experience (i.e. having done it successfully in the past) and fourthly from conditioning yourself to feel good about presenting. Using a technique known as ‘resource anchoring’ we can develop this conditioning aspect of building confidence.

  • The conditioning process
  • Building positive emotions
  • Using ‘triggers’

Pairs exercise: resource anchoring to build confidence

Handling hostile questions.

Methods for dealing with hostile, difficult or awkward questions.

  • The 3 step technique
  • Car parking
  • Responding with a question
  • Inviting audience participation

Open forum: question and answer session

Making graphs count.

Understanding how to get the most out of graphs as a key means of presenting financial data to clients and senior executives.

Delivering a second presentation (10 minutes long)

Speakers take turns to deliver their ten-minute presentations in front of the group and are given feedback by reviewing the videotape of their presentation and as a result of getting feedback against the Boulden assessment checklist. Particular emphasis will be put on self-confidence and voice projection.

Customisation

All our programmes are run on an in-house basis and we conduct interviews and facilitate focus groups to gather information with which to write bespoke exercises and case studies that precisely reflect the culture and work environment of the participants.

Numbers are limited to twelve per course to maximise participation in the programme. Presentations are videoed so that attendees can see for themselves how they come across to the audience and see how they grow in confidence and competence as the course progresses. In addition each presenter is given a detailed assessment of their talk, which is prepared by their peers. Completing the Boulden assessment checklists is not only valuable to the presenter it also helps those completing them to gain an in-depth understanding of the building blocks that make up an excellent presentation.

Course structure

There is an option of following the workshop with a three month long Action Learning project to link the lessons from the training back into the workplace. If this option is selected there is a closure workshop at the end of the project phase where delegates present how they have applied the techniques learned on the course into their daily work routines.

All of our workshops can be delivered as Remote Training via e-learning modules plus Zoom based virtual workshops. Please see our Virtual Training page for more information.

Beyond Numbers: Building a High-Performance Finance Team in the Digital Era

abstract digital

Key Takeaways

  • Organizations must prioritize the development of digital skills in finance teams.
  • Ongoing education and professional development opportunities will help teams adapt to technological advancements.
  • Outsourcing specialized expertise can help organizations focus on building digital expertise in areas of core competencies.

The modern finance team encounters numerous challenges, from rapidly evolving technology to changing client expectations and a constantly shifting regulatory environment. In an increasingly complex finance and accounting landscape, teams must be responsive and adaptable to go beyond the numbers and embrace the future of the accounting function.

Understanding hiring trends and prioritizing digital skills training is crucial to fostering sustainable optimizations that will set finance teams up for long-lasting success.

Navigating the Talent Crunch

While the accounting industry has numerous obstacles to overcome, the number of professionals entering and staying in the accounting field is declining.

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) reports a significant decrease in CPA candidates with a looming wave of retirements, as 75% of CPAs are expected to leave the workforce within the next 15 years.

Given these challenges, organizations increasingly require additional resources to sustain growth and remain competitive. This calls for a strategic approach to talent acquisition and management that emphasizes innovation and prioritizes the development of digital skills.

What are some specific strategies for navigating the talent crunch and addressing the decline in accounting professionals entering and staying in the field?

To navigate the talent crunch and the decline in accounting professionals, consider these strategies:

  • Highlight the diverse and strategic roles in accounting to attract new entrants
  • Partner with educational institutions and provide ongoing training to equip professionals with the necessary digital skills
  • Implement flexible working arrangements to retain and attract talent
  • Use technology to make work more engaging and reduce mundane tasks with automation
  • Ensure your compensation packages are attractive and include valued benefits
  • Build a culture that values diversity, innovation, and continuous improvement
  • Provide training in critical thinking, communication, leadership, and technology solutions
  • Work with industry bodies to make the profession more accessible and appealing

A recent study from McKinsey found a sharp increase over the past five years in finance job requirements related to driving business impact and leadership skills. This can largely be attributed to the growing use of automation and AI in the finance function. With efficiency-boosting technology, finance professionals need skills that can translate financial performance into better business performance and communicate that effectively across the organization.

Embracing Digital Skills Training: Investing in the Future

The importance of digital skills training cannot be overstated. To remain competitive, today's finance professionals must be proficient in various technology areas. While outsourcing can provide immediate support and expertise, you must also focus on building internal capabilities for long-term success.

This means investing in digital skills training to equip your finance team with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Gartner reports that by 2026, a lack of digital skills in senior finance leaders will drive half of unwanted staff turnover.

By providing ongoing education and professional development opportunities, you can empower your teams to adapt to technological advancements and drive innovation within the organization.

What specific digital skills are essential for finance professionals to thrive in today's landscape?

To thrive in today's landscape, your finance professionals need to master various digital skills. These skills not only help them adapt to the evolving nature of the finance sector but also enable them to leverage technology to streamline processes, enhance accuracy, and deliver insightful analysis.

A survey from the Institute of Financial Operations and Leadership shows 50% of respondents feel their finance team is not adapting quickly enough to the changing technological landscape.

Here are some specific digital skills that are essential:

  • Data analytics and management
  • Financial modeling
  • Blockchain knowledge
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning
  • Cybersecurity
  • Cloud computing
  • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems proficiency
  • Digital communication tools
  • Regulatory and compliance software

By developing these digital skills, your finance professionals can significantly enhance their ability to contribute to the organization, making them invaluable assets in the digital era.

Navigating the Evolving Finance Landscape

As the finance industry evolves, organizations must adapt proactively to meet changing demands. Optimizing your finance team through strategic hiring practices and digital skills training is crucial for sustainable growth and success.

Embracing outsourcing to access specialized expertise and investing in internal capabilities through digital skills training can help you position your organization for sustainable growth and long-term success in a competitive marketplace.

How can organizations effectively balance outsourcing with internal digital skills training for sustainable growth?

To balance outsourcing with internal digital skills training for sustainable growth, organizations should focus on their core competencies and invest in developing these areas internally. This means identifying key functions that are critical to their unique value proposition and enhancing the digital skills related to these functions through continuous learning and professional development programs.

Creating a culture of continuous learning is crucial. This can be achieved by offering access to online learning platforms, encouraging certifications in relevant digital fields, and organizing workshops with external experts. Such initiatives help keep the team up to date with the latest digital tools and best practices.

For specialized tasks or when expertise is lacking in-house, outsourcing can be a strategic move. It allows access to specialized skills without the long-term commitment, enabling your organization to stay flexible and responsive to technological advancements. Additionally, fostering a collaborative environment where external professionals work alongside your internal team can facilitate knowledge transfer and hands-on learning, further enhancing internal capabilities.

Empower Your Team, Elevate Your Success

By collaborating with an experienced firm, you can confidently navigate the complexities of growth and innovation. At Eide Bailly, we recognize the significance of providing digital skills training to empower your finance team to succeed.

We leverage our expertise and resources to assist you in developing internal talent and provide additional support as needed, ensuring your organization survives and thrives in an ever-changing environment.
