Educational psychology is devoted to the study of how people learn including differences in learning, gifted learners, and learning disabilities. The branch of psychology involves not just the learning process of early childhood education and adolescence but includes the social, emotional, and cognitive processes that are involved in learning throughout the entire lifespan like that preschool system. The field of educational psychology incorporates a number of other disciplines, including developmental psychology, behavioral psychology, and cognitive psychology. In today's complex educational system, educational psychologists work with educators, administrators, teachers, and students to learn more about how to help the education. Educational psychology is also the study of how humans learn in educational settings, the effectiveness of educational interventions, the psychology of teaching, and the social psychology of schools as organizations. Several learning theories such as behaviorism, cognitivism, and constructivism exist to explain the ways in which a person can learn and understand various concepts. Due to the different possibilities of psychology in special education, an exploratory study was carried out on the perception of psychologists (n = 64) and psychology students (n = 70) about this area. Participants answered a questionnaire containing two parts. The first had six open questions, and the second, 14 myths associated with giftedness. The results indicated, in general, gaps in training to work in the subject, to demonstrate little preparation to work in this area due to the limited presence of disciplines and, consequently, the lack of knowledge of professional practices. Professionals and students indicated the belief in false myths. Participants also reported that they do not feel prepared to work with this audience, especially gifted individuals. The article presents a correlative model based on the Piagetian phenomena and student with special educational needs. Approaches are indicated allowing the mental age to be defined by applying Jean Piaget’s experiments, as well as doing it vice versa – defining the stage as per Jean Piaget in determining the IQ of the individual. The proposed model allows the general education teacher and also the individual progress development team in school, to get easily oriented on the capabilities of the student with special educational needs and prepare individual programs adequate to the student’s development.
