Program Overview
Students in the Statewide Blended Regular Advanced Standing MSW Program complete the program through a unique blend of face-to-face instruction/Zoom videoconferencing, and online learning. The first required classes start in the Summer and are fully online. Students attend class one Saturday per month during the fall and spring semesters of their advanced year of the program via Zoom videoconferencing software. Remaining coursework is done independently online. The MSW Program is fully accredited by CSWE. Students can choose between two areas of specialization: Clinical Practice and Organization and Community Leadership (OCL). The Statewide Blended Advanced Standing MSW Program is offered in either full-time (3 semester) or two-year, part-time formats.
Program Outcomes
The Statewide Blended Regular Advanced Standing MSW Program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and value base needed to become effective members of the professional social work community. Through integrated coursework and field experience, our students receive the education and training necessary to become highly skilled social work practitioners who will enrich the lives of those they serve and the communities in which they practice. The School of Social Work also provides optional learning opportunities MSU MSW students can participate in, such as certificate programs that prepare students for social work careers in specific fields, an Advocacy Scholars Program, a Research Scholars Program, Education Abroad, and two dual degree options (MSW/JD and MSW/MPH).
Career Outlook
Social workers have a profound impact in a range of settings and work with a variety of people on many different social issues. At the macro level, social workers advocate for social change in agencies, systems, and communities as well as at regional, national, and international levels. Macro social workers fill a variety of roles such as agency administrators, policy analysts, and grant writers. Clinical social workers advocate for change at the individual level, with families, or in small groups and work in mental health, geriatrics, schools, private practice and many other settings. Students who graduate from this CSWE-accredited program are eligible to apply and work towards licensure. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018), there were more than 680,000 social workers employed in the United States in 2016, a number that is projected to increase to more than 790,000 by 2026, a 16% growth rate, more than double the projected growth rate for all occupations.

Free Continuing Education for social workers
Introduction to continuing education (ce) for social workers.
A re you a dedicated social worker looking to enhance your knowledge and skills without breaking the bank? Look no further! In this blog post, we will explore the world of Free Continuing Education (CE) opportunities tailored specifically for social workers. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out in the field, continuous learning is key to staying current and providing top-notch care to those in need. Let's dive into why Free CE is essential for social workers and where you can find these valuable resources online!
Why is CE important for Social Workers?
Continuing Education (CE) is essential for social workers to stay current with the latest research, trends, and best practices in the field. It provides an opportunity to enhance skills, knowledge, and competencies necessary for effective client care. Social work is a dynamic profession that requires ongoing learning and development to meet the diverse needs of individuals, families, and communities.
Engaging in CE helps social workers expand their understanding of various populations they serve, including marginalized groups or those facing specific challenges. By participating in CE activities such as workshops, seminars, or online courses, professionals can deepen their cultural competence and improve outcomes for clients.
Moreover, continuing education allows social workers to maintain licensure requirements set by regulatory bodies. Staying updated on ethical guidelines and legal mandates ensures practitioners uphold professional standards while delivering quality services. In today's fast-paced world where societal issues evolve rapidly, continuous learning through CE empowers social workers to adapt effectively and make meaningful contributions to society.
Where to Find Free CE Opportunities
As a social worker, staying up-to-date with the latest trends and practices in the field is crucial for providing effective support to your clients. Luckily, there are numerous opportunities available for free Continuing Education (CE) credits to help you expand your knowledge and skills.
One great place to start looking for free CE opportunities is online platforms dedicated to professional development. Websites like Social Work Today or The National Association of Social Workers often offer webinars and courses at no cost, covering a wide range of relevant topics such as mental health, diversity, and ethics.
Additionally, many universities and colleges host free workshops or seminars specifically designed for social workers seeking CE credits. Keep an eye on local events or check out university websites for upcoming opportunities in your area.
Furthermore, government agencies and non-profit organizations frequently organize training sessions that qualify for CE credits. Don't hesitate to reach out to these institutions directly or follow them on social media to stay informed about upcoming events near you.
Online vs In-Person CE Options
When it comes to Continuing Education (CE) options for social workers, there are two main choices: online and in-person courses.
Online CE courses provide flexibility and convenience, allowing you to learn at your own pace from the comfort of your home or office. They often offer a wide range of topics and can be more cost-effective than attending in-person workshops.
On the other hand, in-person CE opportunities offer a chance for networking and face-to-face interaction with instructors and fellow professionals. These events can be more engaging and hands-on, providing a different learning experience compared to online courses.
The choice between online and in-person CE options will depend on your learning style, schedule, and preferences. Some social workers may prefer the convenience of online courses, while others thrive in a traditional classroom setting.
Tips for Choosing the Right CE Courses
When it comes to choosing the right CE courses as a social worker, there are a few key tips to keep in mind. First, consider your areas of interest or specialization within the field. Look for courses that align with your professional goals and will enhance your expertise.
Next, check the credibility of the course provider. Ensure they are reputable and recognized in the field of social work. Reading reviews or seeking recommendations from colleagues can also help you make an informed decision.
Additionally, don't forget to confirm if the CE credits offered are valid and accredited by relevant organizations or licensing boards. This is crucial to ensure that your hard work and time investment will be recognized professionally.
Consider the format and delivery method of the course. Decide whether online or in-person learning suits your schedule and learning style best. Choose a course that offers flexibility while still providing valuable insights and knowledge to further develop your skills as a social worker.
The Benefits of Free CE for Social Workers
Free Continuing Education (CE) opportunities for social workers provide numerous benefits that can enhance their professional growth and development. By participating in free CE courses, social workers have the chance to stay updated on the latest trends, research, and best practices in the field. This knowledge allows them to better serve their clients and communities effectively.
Furthermore, free CE programs offer flexibility in terms of scheduling and accessibility. Social workers can engage in online courses or webinars at their convenience without having to travel or take time away from work. This flexibility is especially valuable for busy professionals juggling multiple responsibilities.
In addition to expanding their knowledge base, free CE for social workers often enables them to earn credits necessary for licensure renewal. Maintaining a current license demonstrates a commitment to ongoing learning and professionalism within the field of social work.
Taking advantage of free CE opportunities not only benefits individual social workers but also contributes to the overall improvement of the profession as a whole.
Conclusion: The Importance of Continuous Learning in the Field of Social Work
Continuous learning is a fundamental aspect of professional growth in the field of social work. As society evolves, so do the challenges faced by social workers, making it crucial to stay updated with the latest research and practices. By engaging in Continuing Education (CE) opportunities, social workers can enhance their skills and knowledge to better serve their clients.
Embracing lifelong learning not only benefits individual social workers but also contributes to improved outcomes for those they support. Free CE options provide accessible avenues for professionals to expand their expertise without financial constraints. This accessibility helps promote inclusivity and diversity within the field by removing barriers to education.
In a dynamic field like social work, staying stagnant is not an option. Continuous learning allows professionals to adapt to changing environments, implement innovative solutions, and uphold ethical standards effectively. Prioritizing ongoing education fosters a culture of excellence and compassion within the realm of social work.
Free CE opportunities for social workers not only help them stay current with industry trends but also allow them to enhance their skills and knowledge without financial constraints. Continuous learning is essential in the field of social work to provide the best possible support and care to individuals and communities. By taking advantage of free CE courses, social workers can further develop professionally and make a positive impact in their practice. Keep seeking out these valuable resources to grow as a social worker and continue making a difference in the lives of those you serve.
Continuing competence
Nearly every jurisdiction that issues social work licenses requires that social workers document their efforts to maintain competence as a social worker. Most often, maintaining competence takes the form of continuing education.
The bottom line
Continuing competence is the responsibility of the individual social worker—not the CE provider, the licensing board, or the professional association. It is up to you to understand your jurisdiction’s requirements for continuing education—how your jurisdiction tabulates CE time (“clock hours” versus “contact hours,” for example), which types of courses will not be accepted, etc.
The final say
Your jurisdiction’s social work board always has the final say about whether the continuing education courses you took will be approved. Familiarize yourself with your licensing board’s continuing education rules. If you’re considering a particular CE program and have a question about whether your board will accept it, contact your board for clarification before you take the course.
Getting continuing education credits
Maintaining your social work license requires more than just filing paperwork every two years. Regulatory boards recognize the importance of lifelong learning to the social work profession.
For CE providers
Organizations that offer continuing education for social workers can apply to participate in ASWB’s Approved Continuing Education program.

Continuing education.
The University of Idaho offers a variety of courses for individuals to continue their education, whether in Moscow or not. Continuing education courses fall into three categories:
- Conferences, courses, seminars, or workshops offered by academic departments;
- Credit and non-credit courses offered by the Engineering Outreach Program ; and
- Independent Study in Idaho courses.
Courses Offered by Academic Departments
Several academic departments offer conferences, courses, seminars, and workshops throughout the region where students can earn U of I credit or Continuing Education Units (CEU) (see regulation D-5 for information on CEUs). These conferences, courses, seminars, or workshops are taught by U of I faculty members or by qualified local instructors who are approved by the respective college in which the course is offered.
Students earning U of I credit for these conferences, courses, seminars, and workshops must be admitted by the U of I Admissions Office; students earning credit through Independent Study in Idaho or CEUs do not.
Each college and department is responsible for developing and administering these courses as well as registering students. Those interested in taking such courses should contact the respective college for courses available in their geographic area.

Program Description
The MSW program prepares students for advanced generalist social work practice. It is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
The School of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences offers the MSW program in two options: Advanced Standing and Regular Standing. The Advanced Standing program option is designed for students who have a baccalaureate degree in social work (BSW) from a CSWE accredited program and who meet the Advanced Standing program admission requirements. Those who have substantial work experience in the social work field and/or have completed course work in social work (even a minor) but have not graduated with a BSW, are not eligible for Advanced Standing. The Advanced Standing program involves 31 credit hours and can be completed in full-time status (three semesters) or part-time status (four semesters).
The Regular Standing MSW program option is designed for students who do not have a baccalaureate degree in social work from a CSWE accredited program, or who do not meet the other admission requirements for the Advanced Standing program. The Regular Standing program requires 58 credit hours to earn the MSW degree. The Regular Standing student can complete the program in full-time status.
Master of Social Work Admission Objectives
Admission to the Master of Social Work program is competitive and selective. All applicants applying on time and meeting the minimum standards will be considered for admission. However, merely meeting these standards does not guarantee admission. Only those students showing significant promise for a career in social work will be admitted to the program. The MSW program is committed to providing equal educational opportunities to all students regardless of their economic or social status, race, color, gender, sexual orientation, political orientation, disability, age, veterans’ status, or marital or parental status.
Admission Requirements for the Regular Standing MSW Program
Regular Standing MSW program applicants will apply using the centralized application service for social work known as SocialWork CAS. To begin this process, the applicant will create an account through the SocialWorkCAS website ( socialworkcas.liaisoncas.org ). SocialWorkCAS will verify the application for accuracy, calculate the GPA, and send materials to all specified Master of Social Work programs.
All documents required for the Missouri State University MSW application will all be submitted through SocialWorkCAS. Items submitted directly to SocialWorkCas include: an application, all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a resume, personal statement essays, and three letters of reference.
The GRE exam is not required for admission.
Students are eligible to apply for admission into the Regular Standing MSW program when the following conditions are met:
- Applicants must have earned a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by a regional agency recognized by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation.
- The GPA for upper-division course work (last 60 hours) in undergraduate classes may be used if higher than the overall GPA and if this GPA is calculated by the Graduate College or a referring college office.
- The GPA from a graduate degree or graduate certificate from a college or university accredited by a regional agency recognized by the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation may be used if higher than the undergraduate GPA.
Admission Requirements for the Advanced Standing Program
Advanced Standing MSW program applicants will apply using the centralized application service for social work known as SocialWork CAS.
Items submitted directly to SocialWorkCas include: an application, all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a resume, verification of CSWE accredited BSW degree, personal statement essays, and three letters of reference.
Students are eligible to apply for admission into the Advanced Standing MSW program when the following conditions are met:
- It is the responsibility of the applicant to verify their Bachelor of Social work meets CSWE’s accreditation standards before applying to the advanced standing program.
- Verification is to be submitted with the application by a notation of CSWE accreditation on the official transcript, or a copy of accreditation status of BSW degree awarding university listed on CSWE Accreditation page.
- Applicants must have no more than one grade of “C” and not grades below “C” in all social work prefixed courses.
- CSWE’s International Social Work Degree Recognition and Evaluation Service (ISWDRES) recognizes academic credentials in social work that are comparable to accredited baccalaureate and master’s degrees in social work in the United States. Recognition is necessary to establish qualifications for employment, graduate school admission, membership in the National Association of Social Workers, state licensing, and/or certification.
- An International applicant is required to complete the ISWDRES screening form through Council on Social Work Education to determine if a social work degree has been obtained before applying to advanced standing program.
- Verification is to be submitted with the application through notation of CSWE accredited program on the official transcript or other forms of official CSWE document.
Application Deadlines
Application and all additional materials must be submitted by the due date on the application for the year of desired admission for both Advanced and Regular Standing MSW program options. Deadlines will be strictly enforced so applicants are encouraged to apply early. Applicants must have all application materials submitted by the application deadline for consideration. It is recommended that all transcripts be received by SocialWorkCAS no later than two weeks before the due date in order to meet the admission deadline.
Admission to the MSW program involves the “whole person” concept. As such, the admission process considers a person’s character and personal fitness to the social work profession, academic preparedness for graduate study, and a student’s potential to conduct applied social work. Evidence of this includes: previous employment or significant volunteer experience in human services, the student’s statement of purpose, letters of reference, and other information relevant to the admission decision.
Transfer Students
The MSW program will consider transfer credits for core courses only from accredited graduate social work programs. No credit will be given for life or work experience. A maximum of 12 graduate hours from such programs may be accepted if taken at the generalist level. No transfer course work will be accepted for classes taken at the specialist level. Elective credit may be transferred from other social work programs or from programs related to social work (i.e., psychology, counseling, public health, etc.). Elective courses must have been taken within 5 years of entering the MSW program in order to count toward the degree requirements.
After a prospective student has been accepted for admission, the MSW Coordinator will determine the amount of acceptable transfer credit (up to the maximum credit allowed) following a review of official transcripts, catalog descriptions, and course syllabi. Primary emphasis is on assessing whether the objectives and content of transfer courses matches those of required Missouri State University courses. No transfer credits for core courses or electives will be accepted if the student earned less than a “B” or took the class more than 5 years prior to enrolling in the MSW program.
Academic Standards
Students are expected to meet graduate school requirements for good academic standing of a 3.0 GPA for all graduate course work transferred in or earned at Missouri State University. Students will be dismissed from the program for any of the following academic reasons:
- Two grades of “C” in any graduate coursework.
- A grade of “no pass” or “C” in any field practicum (i.e., SWK 740 and SWK 780 ).
- A grade below “C” in any graduate coursework.
Social Work Policies and Procedures for Review of Academic Performance and Grievances
All social work graduate students are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics. All policies concerning student academic performance and personal conduct are delineated by University Policies. All related or other departmental policies and procedures can be found in the MSW Student Handbook.
Capstone Requirements for Regular and Advanced Standing MSW Programs
There are two additional requirements that all MSW students must do to graduate. First, is completing a comprehensive examination. Second, is the successful completion of all field education hours. Field education hours are completed in-person in an agency approved by the School of Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences. There are 400 hours in the field practicum at the generalist level and 500 hours at the advanced generalist level. Advanced Standing students are in the field only at the advanced generalist level. Both capstone requirements must be finished before an MSW degree will be granted.
