PhDForum Online Study Room

What is it.

Our online study room is freely available to help your motivation and make progress with your writing.

Some describe the experience as akin to being in a library; a silent space to work alongside others.

Our room is open 24/7 (with short resets of a couple of minutes approximately once every 20-48 hours). It is a mostly unmoderated and unstructured space.  There are structured sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays. More information is available in the room. You can choose to follow the writing schedule on those days, or ignore. The space is your to make it work for you and your time zone. If you have difficulty joining, please do try using a different browser.

Our room's access code is available when you register using our Eventbrite link here

Why the room works.

Welcome to our virtual space which is shared with the most amazing humans. You have joined a wonderfully diverse group of people who come from different places across the globe. Each one of us bring something different to our community and since our begining in 2012 the community has been shaped by everyone.

The co-production of the space is successful because of the mutual respect and kindness that is inherent in all we do. The creation of a virtual space open 24/7 would not endure without the generosity of time and commitment of those using the space. It works because we are 'we' not 'I'.

Our mental and physical wellbeing is important. Undertaking doctoral study and postdoctoral study can be isolating. Our space is there to reduce that sense of isolation and promote well-being.

The motivation to create the room began when witnessing the devastating impact of poor mental health in the academy. We never know all of what is being experienced by others and choosing to respond with care and kindness can and does make a world of difference.

Equality is at the heart of who we are. We celebrate difference rather than perpetuate 'normative' constructions of self that serve to oppress and fragment our shared humanity.

Being wonderfully human means constantly learning. That process means making mistakes. We are not perfect. Our sense of humours might collide. We may be experienced as unintentionally unkind. Should that occur, communication is the key and you can reach out to those in the room whom you trust and you can reach out to me (Donna). I'm in the room every Saturday morning UK time (8am-11am).

I created the space and help to maintain it as a means to be supportive of others. However, being part of this generous, knowledgable, supportive and inspiring community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. I hope you find it the same in yours.

Always in pedagogical solidarity!             Dr Donna Peach

Finally, please:

Keep microphones on mute

Do NOT take a picture of the room and post it on social media

You can have your webcam on, or not.

Do use the chat box to introduce yourself and let others know where you are from and what you are working on. You will find other attendees very welcoming.

Make Time to Plan

We know that a ‘virtual’ retreat comes with distractions. perhaps for this event you will find a different place to work, rearrange your desk or put up a sign ‘phdforum writing retreat’. change your email auto response you are ‘out of the office’. make a contract with yourself and with us to plan when you will and when you will not access the internet., to plan to succeed you need a plan. it doesn’t matter if you really know what is achievable or how this will work. learning these things is all part of the writing retreat experience. sharing goals is important – tweet your goals to @phdforum , make time to write, ensure that you have times allotted in your day when you can write. even if you are only going to enter the portal for one hour a day – maximise your writing in that time. sitting for four hours at your desk while surfing the net does not constitute writing. be clear on your goals – tell others in the portal what you aim to achieve; report back on what challenges you faced and how you overcame them., review & recharge, we need to get away from a culture where time not writing is served with a side order of guilt. taking time away is vital to your productivity, your well-being and to the scaffolding of an academic community where staff care and a balanced life is viewed as essential not desirable., in your schedule plan for time to recharge. this is an essential part of your daily structure..

Tips for Grads: How to engage in science policy

By Seth Anderson, PhD candidate in Chemical & Biological Engineering

I think many of us in the sciences have what I lovingly call “tunnel vision.” We have aspirations and interests outside of STEM, yet we spend most of our time working on our degrees or recovering from the hard work we do. Further, I would hazard a guess that many of us are also in tune with what we support politically, societally, and morally. So, I am here to cover some tips I learned at the Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering ( CASE ) workshop on how to break out of the “tunnel vision” and dive into the world of science policy.

Funny enough, getting into science policy starts with one thing only: doing good science! You need some sort of credibility for people in the policy world to take you seriously, and the best way to do that is take your job as a scientist seriously. Go out there, get some publications, and conduct some cool science that other people can look at and say, “Hey, I trust that person knows what they are talking about.”

Next is arguably the hardest aspect of breaking into the policy realm, which is developing strong written and oral communication skills for both academic and general audiences. By general, I simply mean people who do not study your specific subject matter area for a living, which could include other academics and crucially, people with limited or no scientific background. You want to be able to communicate complex topics with everyone from THE expert in your field to the general public to politicians who are making the decisions. The latter two are highly undervalued in STEM considering the science we do affects the public, and politicians often misunderstand why science is important. So, be specific, meticulous, and cautious in your writing, and present at conferences when possible. Heck, you could write in blogs, explain your work to your parents, or share your science on social media. All of these will make you a stronger communicator.

Simply put, if you want to break into the science policy realm, you must show an interest in it. One way to do this is to start writing for general audiences as we discussed in the last paragraph. Additionally, you should join organizations that are already involved in science policy, as they will have information about opportunities that will help you contribute to your causes and voice your opinions. If you are in academia, consider going to the National Science Policy Network and finding your local chapter. If you are not in academia or a scientist, you can go to Citizen Science to participate in research or talk to your community about why science policy is important. Surrounding yourself with people who care about science policy will improve your prospects.

To round this all out, you want to focus on your relationships. We care about science policy because we want to improve people’s lives, which means you should focus on your relationships with the people your science impacts most. Further, strengthen your relationships with mentors, coworkers, and local advocates that you meet on your journey. Your network should be strong and your relationships meaningful as you will learn much more and enhance your ability to contribute to science policy. Be genuine and be kind, you can’t go wrong with these.

If you are interested in learning more, check out the companion piece in an upcoming Tips for Grads on how to do one-on-ones with politicians written by Sam Helle, or check out a list of activities curated by Neydis Moreno . Additionally, check out the Gebbie Lab ISEE Blog for breakdowns of science, tips for students, and engineering culture.

watchOS 11 Lets You Schedule Activity Goals for Each Day of the Week

In the watchOS 11 beta, the Activity app for Apple Watch lets you schedule custom activity goals for different days of the week, and also lets you pause your goals if you need to rest up.

watchos 11 schedule activity goals

So if you want to set custom workout goals for, say, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with lower goals during the weekend, you'll soon be able to do that.

This schedule can also be managed through the Fitness app in iOS 18. The Move, Exercise, and Stand activity summaries include the same +/- button that lets you adjust the goal for just today, or adjust your schedule for each day of the week.

In addition, if you tap the main Activity Rings display on Apple Watch, there's also a new Pause Rings option that mutes coaching and goal tracking while maintaining your Move streak. So if you're aiming for a streak and something unexpected upends your efforts (if you fall ill, for example) you can pause tracking without losing out and having to start again.

watchOS 11 is in developer beta, so it's worth noting that some features could always change or be removed completely before Apple releases the new Apple Watch software in the fall.

Tufts PhD student is recovering after stabbing attack in China, brother says

A PhD student at Tufts is recovering after he and four others were stabbed in China on Monday, according to his brother and wire reports.

David Zabner was in the northeast China city of Jilin where he was teaching at Beihua University as part of a program with Cornell College in Iowa, his brother, Iowa state Representative Adam Zabner, said in a social media post.

Zabner was with three other Cornell College instructors, who were also injured in the attack, and a Chinese person who attempted to intervene was also stabbed, officials said.

“I spoke to David a few minutes ago, and he is recovering from his injuries and doing well,” Adam Zabner said in a post on Instagram . He said his brother was stabbed in the arm.

Police in Jilin said a 55-year-old man surnamed Cui was walking in a public park when he bumped into a foreigner and stabbed them and three other foreigners they were with. The victims were taken to a hospital for treatment, and none were in critical condition, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily briefing Tuesday.

Rep. Zabner said his brother was visiting a temple in Jilin at the time of the attack.

“My family is incredibly grateful that David survived this attack,” Adam Zabner said in an Instagram post. “We’d like to see David home in Iowa as soon as possible. We’re deeply thankful to the state department and Iowa’s federal delegation and understand that they are working hard to make that happen.”

A Tufts spokesperson confirmed David Zabner is a PhD student at the Medford college studying STEM education with a focus on computer science education.

Jian said the attack in Jilin City’s Beishan Park is under investigation. He said police believe the attack was an isolated incident, based on a preliminary assessment.

Cornell College President Jonathan Bard issued a statement to school’s community about the attack.

“We have learned that four Cornell instructors teaching as part of a partnership with a university in China were injured in a serious incident during a daytime visit to a public park while accompanied by a faculty member of the partner institution,” Bard said. “We have been in contact with all four instructors and are assisting them during this time. There were no students taking part in this program.”

Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
